Well we have been at the Shelter Bay Marina (Colon – Atlantic side of canal just inside the northern breakwater) for a few days for some well deserved R & R organising all the red tape to allow us to passage through the Panama Canal. Some of the other crew have taken line handling jobs on other yachts needing assistance taking their yachts through the canal. I decide to do the same so I have some first hand experience when I take my own yacht through next Tuesday i.e. practice on someone else’s yacht first.

The requirements are that all yachts need 4 line handlers in addition to the master of the vessel to be allowed to transit the canal. Further, yachts under 20 metres also require 4 mooring lines of at least 50 metres each and up to 12 car tyres wrapped in plastic bags with a bit of rope attached so you can attach to the sides of the vessel for protection against the canal wall or when rafted up to the other vessel/s.

I hear that Philippe the master and owner of a 53 foot super catamaran made by X Light Catamarans in France is looking for an extra line handler. He is just opposite us on the next marina arm. I visit his yacht “Axe Jehol” (Named after a famous Belgium race horse) and meet him. He gives me the job for his transit on the Saturday & Sunday giving me time to take the busses back from Panama City for our transit on the Tuesday.

His yacht is amazing. Over $2m worth of yacht in carbon fibre yacht with rotating mast also in carbon fibre (when rotating it he can get up to another knot of boat speed and also allows him to reef or bring the sail down when underway and not into the wind as most non rotating masted yachts do). It looks mean and fast designed to easily cover 200nm a day and often travelling at 15-18 knots for long periods. On looking inside everything is designed to save weight. It has a very spartan layout with no doors only curtains, no wooden draws or steps or other bits and pieces just pure unadulterated carbon fibre. Philippe was considering not even having a hard bimini for sun protection because the carbon fibre to make it would add 30kg. His engine controls are only on one side of the yacht because of the extra weight and no steering wheel just 2 tillers like on a 3m yacht just to save weight. How much weight is saved well his yacht is 6 tonnes and mine is 12 tonnes and his is about 3 metres longer. Say no more.

All this reminds me of an alleged quote from one Sydney to Hobart skipper who told his crew that they had to cut down the weight they brought on board suggesting they cut their toothbrush in half to save weight. Philippe has taken this to another level.

There is usually a compromise in most choices i.e. speed V comfort. Hestia will cover 160nm a day if things are going well so for 40-50nm a day difference in our yacht you have one ice box not 3 fridges and freezer, 4 generous single berths and one queen berth in saloon and one shower & toilet versus 4 queen sized cabins & 2 single cabins, one shower versus 5 showers, one toilet versus 4 toilets, 3 small batteries versus 7 large batteries and you see where the extra weight goes. The differences are many these are just a few of them.

Anyway the days fly by until Saturday afternoon arrives. I meet Philippe and his other crew at 1pm and depart Shelter Bay Marina for an area known as “The Flats” some 2nm away where transiting yachts wait for an advisor at 3pm to assist each of the yachts transiting the canal. Note that boats under 20m have advisors whereas vessels over 20m have pilots. Both have the same purpose.

We are then met by an advisor on a launch who is dropped off at our yacht and is equipped with all his paperwork, mobile phones and radios. Each yacht has its own advisor even though we are one of 3 vessels rafted up side by side at the rear end of a 600 foot container ship going through the first of the locks (The Gatun lock) that has 3 chambers each lifting the vessels about 10 metre per chamber. This lock is about 3 miles away from our anchorage at The Flats.

We raft up just outside the entrance to the locks and go through to the lock as one unit after the container ship we are transiting these locks with enters first.

Once inside the first chamber the lock door shuts and we are thrown a small rope called a messenger with a monkey fist (rope tided into a ball) attached to the end from about 30 metres away. The two line handlers on shore throws this missile at us and it hits the deck hard and is then picked up by the line handlers on board each of the outside vessels and is attached separately to 2 of the mooring lines required to be on board each vessel and is then hauled up by the line handlers ashore and secured onto a bollard. The fore and aft lines on both the 2 outside vessels ( the vessel in the middle just watches) are then adjusted by each of the line handlers on each yacht so that the vessels stay in the middle of the lock as the vessels rise as the waters flood into the lock. The water that is released is enormous and causes many whirlpools and disturbs the vessels creating a hazardous situation if left unmanaged. One of the 3 advisors on board the 3 yachts moves onto the centre yacht and gives commands to the other advisors, the masters of the 2 outside vessels (to put their engines into forward or reverse) or to the line handlers on the outside yacht to take up or let out their dock line.

We eventually get through the 3 chambers without incident and then unraft just outside the lock in Gatun lake and then move under our own power to a big muffin (the name we called the huge mooring buoys about 2nm away from the main shipping channel where we rafted up again and had a swim and cool down in the lake (avoiding any alligators alleged to be in the lake) before having dinner and going to sleep in my new crammed quarters).

The following morning we were greeted at 6am by a new advisor who walked all over the slightly damp boat in his printed plastic shoes making marks like an animal at an African water hole. I was following him around with a rag wiping up the brown marks he was leaving everywhere. He could see me and what I was doing but he wasn’t going to take his shoes off for anyone. He was in charge, or at least that is what he thought.

Then after giving him breakfast we were off at about 6.5 knots for the 5 hour transit of the lake following to the port side of the red channel markers. For quite a long time we did not see another ship as there had been some fog at the Miraflores locks (the first lock on the Pacific side) that had delayed the passage of some ships. I was amazed to learn that only 45 vessels of any sort transit the canal each 24 hours and of those 3 to 6 vessels are small craft like ours. The lake has a current minimum depth of 38 feet which they are hoping to soon bring it to 45 and then 60 feet to allow bigger vessels to transit. Many vessels now off load their cargo at either end of the canal and transport their cargo by rail to the other end to be loaded onboard another vessel for its continuing voyage.

On the way to the Pedro Miguel locks which has one chamber we saw many dredges keeping the channel at least 38 feet or to slowly increase the depth to 45 feet.

After around 5 hours we had arrived at the only lock which only has one chamber. We rafted up again and duplicated the previous manoeuvres. We stayed rafted up to the other vessels after transiting this lock as the final lock (Miraflores Lock) was only 1nm onwards. This lock has 2 chambers and like the preceding one you drop about 10m each chamber. This is less troublesome to yachts as there are much fewer whirlpools as the water is leaving not coming in.

After going through the final lock we were in the Pacific. Yahoo!!!!. Philippe opened a bottle of champagne that we all had a glass of.

As we motored to our anchorage at Flamenco we dropped off our advisor to a launch that picked up the advisors off the other yachts we looked up to see what looked like a flattened version of the Sydney Harbour Bridge another 2nm onwards

Having passed under this bridge we dropped off our mooring lines & tyres that were hired in Colon to a waiting barge and then continued on to our anchorage.

I stayed the night on the yacht doing a few things in Panama City the following morning before I took 2 busses back to Colon and then Shelter Bay Marina.

Now I have all the knowledge to do the transit on Hestia in two days time.

Addie never knew how exactly he knew where she was when they weren't together but every time she received something in the mail from him she cherished it. A phone vibrates loudly, pulling you from your sleep. You groan, irritated at the incessant noise of his phone on the nightstand near your head.

You pop an eye open, grabbing his phone to look at the caller ID. Someone named James Wesley is calling.

You figure it must be urgent if they can reach him here. Wait, but, you thought the satellite had to be in range?

You grab the buzzing phone, wobbling to the elevator on shaky legs, rubbing the sleep from your eyes as you press the elevator call button.

The phone stops buzzing when you step into the elevator, and you pause when you see that the call has been answered. The small Bluetooth button is lit, and you figure he probably answered the call from his watch or something.

The elevator opens to the kitchen and you hear Billy's voice, with a borderline aggressive tone.

"Tell Fisk, that I'll give him what he wants." Is all you hear him say, before the call ends.

"Billy?" You say to him, his back coming into view and he rounds on you quickly.

You lift his phone, trying to explain silently how you managed to overhear his words. Words that clearly demanded an explanation.

Havana Paradise

It took the entire morning to navigate the catamaran through the channel entrance to Marina Hemingway at Havana where several leisure vessels docked at aduana, the customs checkpoint for contraband search. Three dockhands stood waiting to catch Thalassa’s lines as the dockmaster boarded for paperwork and check-in, which had John fuming in silence for all these rubbish procedures were taking an hour longer than he was willing to spare, on top of the vessel queue to get ashore.

John was quite ready to tear the face off the pudgy dockmaster after the eleventh time the man cleared his throat, eyes aglow and seething sulphur but counting to a hundred helped somewhat. Then the meatbags had the audacity to linger around expectantly waiting for a tip. How DARE?!

He let Nick handle them whilst grumbling under his breath about all the things that irked him. The ridiculous amount of zeros on the peso, the lackadaisical service staff, the quantity of boats coming in just as they were about to dock, the sand that the dockhands trodded on board, the ugly uniforms, the concert walls on the Marina that would scuff poor Thalassa if he didn’t have fenders ready...everything and anything irritated him at this point, so John went into the cabin to re-pack their searched bags for the hotel, brushing past Nick with a hiss of ‘kin-I-just-kill-’em-’n-be-done-wiff-it’ though that too was rather half-hearted.

Dressed in a loose white linen shirt over slacks he had rolled above the ankles, John left it untucked and unbuttoned as he shouldered their duffle, all scowl and sunkissed skin and the fuzz on his chest on show.

The south west side of the canal had a line of taxis waiting alongside in ice-cream truck. Fishermen, surfers, a small collection of yacht owners with their beach equipment and cabanas.

Some guy was busy hawking cheap sunglasses on a tray.

“I wants a cocktail in me ‘and at all times,” John decided after tugging a cigarette out from his pack and offering Nick one. Three puffs would be enough to calm him down...or a kiss. Whichever came first.

- a baby that looks like Jamie and has his cute freckles. Brigid knows what I’m taking about.

Also brigid would like like Jamie’s beanie vv much so now we both are in that club because I have quinners and Brigid has Jamie’s.

- Mykonos is gorgeous. That is that.

- I am loving Brigid tracing Jamie’s freckles while he sleeps🥺 and I find it adorable that Brigid can only sleep with Jamie :)this would so be insta worthy photos.

- hehe yes to getting beeped by machines!! Okkk I’m glad, so Lexi is busy with Quinner means that we are just getting coffeeee. We aren’t like you and Jamie who make out in arenas.

- hehe Jamie would just be glaring at cozzy when he sits down, and cozzy becomes slightly terrified so he gives up the seat but still wants $50 because he wants to buy himself something on the flight. He goes to sit w his sleeping buddy devon. Kesh and Kirby are just to cool to deal with our crazy shit in the morning.

-no sore neck for Dylan. Thank you brigid. Yes to all of these soft moments. Playing with each other’s hair, the freckle tracing and the slightly heated make out that you would be having while Dylan is sleeping because I don’t think he could handle that lol. Another thought jamie just helping you fidget less because you keep hitting the back of Bowen’s seat and he’s sleeping.

- Kesh and Kirby are like the star couple, they are just perfect with each other. I understand why you wouldn’t want to know us esp when quinton Braden and Peyton start to throw snacks over the seats.

-honestly if I had that much coffee I would probably throw up, but kudos to Quinner for passing out after consuming all of that. I want freckles kisses but also I would play with jacks rope bracelets and w his hair 🥺. You would probably get really annoyed because of my leg tapping so Quinner also needs to calm that down as well.

- me slapping Ryan to wake up is just vv funny to me. Yess to them admiring our hair . Whenever I travel to warm places my skin always clears uppp so it’s nice.

-yay we are all sharing rooms w our bbs. hey hey

hey I’m not that dirty minded but like how can you resist? I don’t wanna hear to much from the two of you I mean it 😏. Omg I just had an idea imagine everybody just running into each other’s rooms and chasing each other. I hope we don’t walk in on you two lol. And we all settle in one room and have a slumber party lol. Face masks w the boys ‘I’m sorry why is it green’ ‘calm down, it’s a cucumber face mask it’ll hydrate your skin’ and then when they take them off the boys are glowing heheh.

- ok so I’ve bought an entire new wardrobe for this trip lol l. Ooo shopping would be vv fun. In this reality we have money hehe. Jamie carrying you into the water is 🤌 and I love it. Me and Quinner still need to be chaotic so we push each other into waves and then Brigid and jamie join. Meanwhile Kesh and Kirby are just chilling. Yesss with the hair slicked back and just wrapping your legs around their waists and maybeeeee kissing.

-finally me and Brigid are on the same team. Like Ryan you hit me in the face brigid will hit you 2x harder. Yess to all of us having moments on the beach at night.

- apparently we had some eventful nights😏 ehich I love even some of the boys because they want to have summer flings so no early morning for us. I love hotel breakfast as well esp if they have a buffet because you can eat as much as you want.

- cliff diving: ofc Brigid and Dylan go first because they are literally not scared of anything. aww you grabbing Jamie’s hand while he’s terrified. While that’s happening me and Ryan are hyping each other up, we slap each other on the backs etc. And we start to run and I get Quinner to come even if he’s terrified. I’d probably yell ‘let’s fucking goooo’ Brigid I’m making you the person that yells Marco the entire time lol cuz you are the swimmer of the group. Hehe us blaming Kesh and Kirby because they couldn’t figure out how to get out of the water. just a thought, wouldn’t it be better if you stay with the boys just in case they have trouble swimming and you can help them. And maybe I can go with Dylan and bond with him a bit. Any way works tho :). Hehe once everybody gets to the beach we are just crawling because we are tired from swimming and we just sleep on the beach lol.

- I’m good with dong half and half- snorkelling and scuba. Awww you holding Jamie’s hand and pulling him along. Same with me and Quinner and kesh and Kirby. I was terrified lol . Oo that’s so cool that you got to swim with turtles. That’s great for 8 year old Brigid:)).

Ooo a catamaran is so fun as well. Anyways dylan is just talented at everything. So he plays guitar and maybe he can help me reawaken my guitar skills. So I just watch him lol. Finally somebody who doesn’t make fun of me listening to the mamma Mia sound track. I love it sm and it just gives off the biggest Greece vibes. Aww and all of us just singing softly. And then just cuddling with the boys in the sun and me taking a bunch of photos! Aloe Vera it is😏😏.

Side story: so brigid you are playing music on the speakers while we are on the boat and Jamie goes to change the song and sees that there is an adorable photo of you and him as your wallpaper and he asks ‘you have me as your lock screen’ and you blush and say yes and he gives you the biggest kiss and then the rest of the boys are like awwww and all compare lock screens. And then Quinner looks at mine and smiles same w Kirby.

Yayyy us dressing cute all of hair is in natural waves/curls and getting dinner at a cute restaurant. and then exploring the nightlife in Mykonos. Ooo the drinks are a plus to us being chaotic at night. Like we would laugh so much at night. Awww kisses under the moon and then backkkk to the hotel for spicy evening pt 2

Side note: so imagine we already had dinner and we just start exploring Mykonos and we come across a live band playing outside and Jamie sees people dancing and then asks you to dance:) and you ofc agree and you just have the most intimate slow dance 🥺 and you just stare into his eyes and then tuck your face into his neck. Kirby also sees and asks kesh to dance and they are just admiring each other. And then Quinner sees me pouting and crying over you two and asks me to dance as well and we also slow dance. The rest of boys also find some ladies to dance with.

Next day: we decide to explore Mykonos like going to see the ruins and historical sights. So we all set off in the morning. Since Greece has a lot of alleys and stairs everyone some of us ( me and Ryan I fall down the stairs sm ) accidentally fall down the stairs ‘oh for fucks sake why do I always have to fall’ ‘what about me Lexi?’ ‘ you’re a hockey player you fall all the time anyway’ so we just bicker and you guys laugh and Quinner helps me up. ‘Hey Brigid we heard you and Jamie last night’ ‘shut up Cole we saw that girl sneak out of your room lol’ so everyone is just chirping each other the entire time. We get to the historic sights and we are all in awe and take a bunch of photos. Then we go get lunch and just chill. After that we all return to the hotel in the evening and we all get dinner. All in all I am loving this trip. It’s just so great.

Also I realized that pro tennis players go there during off season and so if I see one of them I will totally ask for a photo and go play tennis with them one afternoon. ‘Omg guys Serena William is hereeee’ and I just run off lol.

- another part might be happening but I might start with our Europe tripppppppp.

ok so first day in greece

omg yes slumber party!! we can watch movies and stuff together and make the guys do face masks lmao. ‘why is it green’ ‘wait mine’s grey’ ‘i don’t want this shit on my skin’ ‘guys just put them on, it’ll be good for you’ omg yessss when we take them off they’re just glowing, love that for them

hehe all of us girls going shopping together to get cute new clothes bc guess what? we have moneyyyyy. and all the guys are just like where did they go

hehe late breakfast bc we had eventful nights and don’t wanna get up early. and then i’m eating sm at the buffet lol and the guys are just like how? bc i’m just a very hungry person in general lol

hehe ok cliff diving: obvi me and dyl first bc we’re the daredevils, but i also pull jamie with us bc i don’t want to leave my bb behind. and then you and ryan hype each other up and you guys come next but then you pull quinner with you too, bc you don’t want to leave him behind. hehe i’m not being marco the whole time sorry, whoever gets tagged becomes marco. hehe and then once we’re ready to get out we blame kesh and kirby that we don’t know how lol ‘wow thanks mom and dad, how helpful’ jk we still love you kesh!! honestly i’m down to either, stay with the guys in the water or climb up, i did do rock climbing for a couple years tho so idk if that makes a difference. but then also they probably need help swimming and you want to bond with dyl, so honestly up to you:)

snorkeling and scuba diving - all of us holding hands with our bfs and swimming with them🥺 hehe yes little brigid was really just living a wild life lol. anywaysss then we’re back on the catamaran and dyl’s just playing music and then we give lexi a turn and she’s surprisingly good for having not played in so long. and then singing mama mia is so fun! and just hanging out on the boat in general and having fun and cuddling with our boys. and then ofc we have to use aloe vera lol

hehe yess i have aux on the boat, but at some point i just ask jamie to go change the song and he knows my password, but i forgot he doesn’t know i changed my wallpaper. so then he’s sees the pic of us cuddling together in the airport and he’s just like ‘i’m your wallpaper’ and i just blush and go ‘well, yeah’ and he just comes over and hugs me and gives me a kiss. so then everyone’s comparing wallpapers lol, and so quinner and kirby are vv happy when they see lexi and kesh’s

yesss all of us looking cute and exploring mykonos nightlife. haha everyone’s at least a little tipsy bc it’s super easy to get drinks there. hehe all of us super loud and laughing and stuff, love that. and then moonlight kisses🥰

awww yes, we’re exploring and we see a live band so jamie asks me to dance. and i blush but ofc i say yes, so we’re just having the softest most intimate slow dance🥺 staring into each other’s eyes at first, but then i tuck my face into his chest bc i get nervous with eye contact. and then ofc kirby has to ask kesh bc they’re #couplegoals and they’re just admiring each other while they dance. and quinner isn’t the best with social cues so he doesn’t pick up on it right away, but then he sees you’re sad and asks you to dance with him and then you two are adorable together. and the other guys ask some girls to dance, and guess who ends up coming back to the hotel with us that night lmao

next dayyyyy

oooh yes going to see the greek ruins, and there are a tonnn of alleys and stairs and stuff. so ofc you and ryan fall down them (and i by some miracle don’t). hehe you: ‘why tf am i always falling?’ him: ‘what about me tho lexi?’ you: ‘you’re a hockey player, it’s kind of in your job description’ and you guys keep fighting lmao, but ofc quinner helps you up 😍

and the chirpssss that would be going on all day lmaoooo ‘hey brigid, we heard you and jamie last night’ ‘oh fuck off, i saw a different girl come out of your room this morning cole. what are you doing, trying to go through every girl in mykonos by the time we leave?’

and then ofc sightseeing and taking lots of insta photos, and then we all go to get lunch together. imagine the people who have to serve our table, i feel sorry for them lol. and then we could just go back to the beach or smtg before dinner and then back to the hotel 😏

final thoughts

at some point lexi sees a really good tennis player and goes to get her picture taken and see if she can practice with them, and kesh and i being the good friends that we are chase after her to take the pictures lol. hehe and then lexi abandons us to go play tennis with them for the afternoon

Promises of God

You remain in control In the middle of the war You guard my soul I take great comfort in knowing God’s in control, Don’t you? Hello! You’ve found the Senior Adult Sunday school class for Corinth Baptist Church in Singleton, Ms. The title of our lesson for today is:

Clinging to the

Promises of God

This will be the 2nd in a

5-session series under the general heading of; Facing Adversity.

We’ll be drawing Scripture from the 27th chapter of the Book of Acts.

You know, there are more than 7,000 promises from God to us written in His Word. One of the 1st things that came to my mind when I read that was the question: ”Why? I mean, why would God make so many promises to humanity?” The overriding answer to that would be that He wants for us to simply………….. trust Him. So, how can we know that this Bronze-Age book, the Bible, is really God’s word to us? That would be because the Bible proves itself. I don’t know of another book ever written that declares future events with unerring accuracy. Over 25% of the Bible is prophetic. Peter wrote in 2nd Peter 1:19-21; 19. So we have the

prophetic word

strongly confirmed.

You will do well to

pay attention to it,

as to a lamp shining

in a dismal place,

until the day dawns

and the morning star

rises in your hearts.

20. First of all,

you should know this:

No prophecy of Scripture

comes from one’s own

interpretation,

21. because no prophecy

ever came by the will of man;

instead, men spoke

from God as they were

moved by the Holy Spirit. God spoke through men the words of prophecy. But, can we really believe the prophesies, or the promises of God to us? Well, if many of the prophecies actually did come to pass when and where they were foretold, I’d say that was confirmation that the words of the Bible are true. To this day, we remember what happened on Palm Sunday. Jesus fulfilled the prophecy that He would come into Jerusalem riding on a donkey and be hailed as the King of the Jews. But did you know that He did this on exactly the day that Daniel had prophesied he would? Daniel made the prediction more than 500 years before it happened. Think about it. 500 years before it happened, a man wrote down the prophecy that the Messiah would enter Jerusalem riding on a donkey. AND, he predicted the exact day it would happen. That’s just one prophecy that was fulfilled exactly as it had been predicted. Anyone can go onto the internet, search for fulfilled prophecies, and discover that there are many, many of them. Many more are yet to be fulfilled; but they will be because so many of them have already proven the fact that the Bible is completely accurate. If the prophecies are true, certainly the promises are as well. And if the promises are true, then why wouldn’t we trust God completely? In today’s lesson we’ll be learning of Paul’s shipwreck as he is being taken to Rome. Paul demonstrates his unshakable faith and trust in God through this harrowing situation.

Section 1: Acts 27:21-24; 21. Since many were going without food, Paul stood up among them and said, “You men should have followed my advice not to sail from Crete and sustain this damage and loss. 22. Now I urge you to take courage, because there will be no loss of any of your lives, but only of the ship. 23. For this night an angel of the God I belong to and serve stood by me, 24. and said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. And, look! God has graciously given you all those who are sailing with you.’ Finally, after two years of

being under arrest in

Caesarea, Paul was, at last

on his way to Rome.

But these folks

weren't on a sleek

catamaran zipping over

the waves and making

short work of a voyage

from Caesarea Maritime

to Rome.

Instead, they were

transferring from one

large, slow moving,

grain vessel to

another painstakingly

making their way

to their

destination.

It's late autumn and

their progress was

being hindered by

unfavorable winds.

The captain of the

vessel they were on

had intended to sail

west from Cnidus,

but instead had been

forced to sail

southwest toward

Crete.

They had sailed around

the southern coast of

Crete and landed at the

port of Fair Heavens.

The Roman Centurion

that was in charge of

the prisoners had

decided that this

would not be a good

place to hold up for

the winter; and the

captain of the grain

ship they were traveling

on said he was

confident that he could

make the crossing to

Italy.

The problem was that it

was late fall.

At this time of the year,

that region of the

Mediterranean experienced

seasonal storms called

Euroclydon, (U Rock Lee Don).

Like the American Nor'easter,

these storms were fierce and

could last for many days.

Paul had been warned in his

spirit to try to dissuade

the centurion and the captain

from attempting the crossing,

but didn't prevail.

Now they found themselves

in the midst of one of these

terrible storms.

The ship was being battered

and the 276 passengers and

crew were wrestling with

the very real fear that

they might not survive.

It was at this time that

Paul stood up and told them

that they should have

listened to him.

He didn't say that as an

"I told you so" but rather

that they might now

believe the words coming

out of his mouth.

He told them to take courage

because he had been informed

by an angel that though

the ship they were on was

going to be lost, none of

them were going to die.

Because they were all

aware of Paul's warning

not to leave Fair Heavens,

what he was now saying to

them carried the

weight of credibility.

Now, last week I pointed

out that Nero had ordered

the Christians in Rome

to be killed.

In the telling of that

episode, I voiced my

opinion that Paul had

probably not had the

opportunity to stand

before Caesar.

But in verse 24 of our

lesson for today,

the angel talking to

Paul on that storm-tossed

ship, told him that he

must stand before Caesar.

I don't know it he ever

actually did, the Bible

doesn't tell me one way or

the other.

But I want to make something

perfectly clear here.

Like an onion,

the Scriptures and God's

Truth comes to all of

us in layers.

When God so chooses for

each of us to discover

something deeper in His

Word, He'll peel back

another layer for us.

Who knows?

Maybe, some day, God will

show me in His Word,

of by His Spirit,

that Paul did, in fact,

have the opportunity to

stand before Nero.

Now, back to the Scripture

of today's lesson.

The message that Paul relayed

to the others on the ship

was a reassurance that they

were all going to survive

this terrible storm.

And it's the idea that

leads us into the next section.

It's entitled....

Section 2: Encourage Others to Trust in God. Acts 27:30-38;

30. Some sailors tried to escape from the ship; they had let down the skiff into the sea, pretending that they were going to put out anchors from the bow. 31. Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.” 32. Then the soldiers cut the ropes holding the skiff and let it drop away.

33. When it was about daylight, Paul urged them all to take food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day that you have been waiting and going without food, having eaten nothing. 34. Therefore I urge you to take some food. For this has to do with your survival, since none of you will lose a hair from your head.” 35. After he said these things and had taken some bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all of them, and when he broke it, he began to eat. 36. They all became encouraged and took food themselves. 37. In all there were 276 of us on the ship. 38. When they had eaten enough, they began to lighten the ship by throwing the grain overboard into the sea.

So, there again,

we see that they were

indeed on a ship

capable of carrying

over 250 passengers

and its very large

cargo of grain.

These weren't the

little boats

used by the fishermen

on the Sea of Galilee.

They were large,

sturdy wooden sailing ships

capable of

handling rough seas.

Before studying for

this lesson,

I just didn't know

what to make of

verse 30.

The author of

the lesson brought

out something interesting.

Verse 30 says that

"some sailors tried to

escape from the ship by

pretending they were

taking a skiff to put

out anchors."

These sailors were

trying to abandon ship.

From what I can see here,

Paul didn't tell the soldiers

what he knew the sailors

were really doing.

Instead, he just stopped

them from doing it by

warning the soldiers.

What the author of

today's lesson pointed out

was that these sailors

most likely were not

believers nor worshippers

of the God you and I

place our faith in.

For them,

salvation from their

gods had not come and

they had chosen to flee.

It would be tempting,

he goes on, to look down

our self-righteous noses

at them.

But the truth is that

all of us are prone to

a lack of faith during

times of trial and

difficulty.

But the thing is that

our God has proven His

faithfulness over and

over again.

When the Hebrews

cried out to God

from their bondage

in Egypt,

God sent Moses.

When Peter denied

Jesus, just as He said

he would,

Jesus was gracious and

restored him.

The Scriptures are full

of examples of this truth.

In our own lives,

over and over again,

all of us can point

to times when God

has proven Himself

trustworthy.

Even though we

know God is faithful,

Christians can struggle

to act in faith

in the moment,

especially in extremely

difficult situations.

When we're facing trying

times, right along with

unbelievers,

these are opportunities

for us to encourage them

to look outside of

themselves for hope to the only One

who can give it and

back it up.

This was what Paul

was doing onboard that

doomed ship that day.

Even though he was

a prisoner,

he rose above his

position and became

a fearless leader and

a beacon of hope for

everyone on-board.

The others on the ship

could see his confidence

in God.

When the rest of them

had lost their faith,

Paul was able to point

them to his God.

Section 3: Recognize the Fulfillment of What God Has Promised. Acts 27:39-44; 39. When daylight came, they did not recognize the land but sighted a bay with a beach. They planned to run the ship ashore if they could. 40. After casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time loosening the ropes that held the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and headed for the beach. 41. But they struck a sandbar and ran the ship aground. The bow jammed fast and remained immovable, while the stern began to break up by the pounding of the waves.

42. The soldiers’ plan was to kill the prisoners so that no one could swim away and escape. 43. But the centurion kept them from carrying out their plan because he wanted to save Paul, so he ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land. 44. The rest were to follow, some on planks and some on debris from the ship. In this way, everyone safely reached the shore.

God’s angel had promised Paul that every one of the people on that ship were going to survive, even though they were going to lose the ship. Paul had told this to those on the ship. We serve a mighty God who says what He means, and means what He says. As the day broke, land was sighted, but they didn’t know where they were; they didn’t recognize it. But they did see a bay with a beach. The storm was still raging, so they decided to ram the ship onto it. But, as they tried sailing to it, they ran aground on a sandbar. They hit it hard and there was no way of getting free of it. The waves were hitting the stern, (the rear of the ship), with such force that they were actually tearing the ship apart. If they stayed on the ship, they’d all perish. The soldiers, knowing that they, themselves would be killed if the prisoners escaped, had already decided to execute them. But their commanding officer, the centurion, stopped them because he wanted to save Paul. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard and make for the beach. The rest would have to use boards and anything else that would float to get to land. Just as God had promised, everyone made it to safety. Yes, God was in control through it all. He had worked in the heart of the Centurion to preserve the lives of all of the prisoners. The Bible tells us the centurion did this to save Paul’s life. All of the prisoners’ lives were saved because of Paul. Everyone’s lives were in peril as the ship was being torn apart by the waves. But, in breaking the ship apart, God was providing the very thing those who couldn’t swim so desperately needed at that time…… planks. God gave Paul through the angel a specific promise; he would preach the gospel in Rome, and that everyone on the ship would survive the storm. Like Paul and his companions, God doesn’t give us the details of how He’s going to accomplish His promises. One promise that God makes to all of us is; ”We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.” God will take all the nuances of our various stories, both the good and the bad, and work them together for our good. That phrase, ”all things,” means just that, every experience in life that we have encountered. So, if you find yourself in a storm, a really difficult time in life, recognize that it won’t last forever. If you’re enduring a season of deep pain and woundedness, realize God’s promise to work all things for good remains true. God comforts us during our seasons of affliction so that He can heal us and we can, in turn, pass that comfort on to others who are suffering, knowing that God always keeps His promises.

God requires His followers to place their trust in Him, not only for the salvation of their souls but also for the care of each of their steps. We must be unwavering in our commitment to

Call upon the Lord when we’re struggling with trusting Him. He’s worthy of our trust, and we must fight to remind ourselves of this truth. Because God’s fulfilled His greatest promise in providing salvation through Jesus, we are now free to live fulfilling the great commission without wavering, even when our work seems futile and the future unsure. We can remain faithful even when we don’t have all the details God has prepared for us in the future. His Word tells us that He has prepared good works for us to do. We can be confident in God’s protection and preservation over His people to complete His mission. Let’s pray: Help us, Lord to cling to your promises

Help us Lord to Trust you and boldly proclaim your truth Help us Lord to Encourage others to trust in you. We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.
