S1000D | Why Do We Need it and How Does it Work | Code and Pixels
S1000D is A new buzz word in the technical publishing world. New word? Not exactly new, but surely it’s a new word in Indian Defence Technical Publishing segment.
What is S1000D
S1000D is an Interactive Electronic Technical Publishing IETP. Of course, it’s also called IETM too.
S1000d is not new but very few Indian companies, which support documentation of foreign Airline documentation are similar to S1000d word. But almost 90% of the people who do S1000d conversation don’t know what S1000d is.
Few tools available in the market which are used to make XML files But they are not an IETM creating tool, Just XML conversion tools. After converting to XML, they send to foreign airlines company, where they foreign airline companies plug-in theses XML into their S1000d suits.
S1000D History In Brief
A few years back S1000d is mainly used in the Aerospace segment, because S1000d is basically governed by Steering Committee formed by ASD, Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA) ATA e-Business Program These organizations form the S1000D Council Hence, it’s more apt for the Aerospace industry.
Currently, Defense systems – including land, sea, and air products, civil aviation, Ship industry of the US have adopted these standards while making documentation.
youtube
Adoption of S1000D
Now Indian Defense system is also trying to adopt S1000D for their documentation activities. When Navy/IAF/Army wants S1000d IETM, it is implied that the navy has CSDB Suit /Local CSDB Server 20- 50 OEMs or Service providers will give S1000d data Modules of various systems and the Navy CSDB Local server will host them and monitor them and does the user management
If the navy does not have a CSDB suit then, still they can run IETM, but a standalone version where no user management will be done by IETM Viewer.(User management will be done by Navy CSDB Local server which hosts all the data modules of various OEMs)
Is S1000D suitable for Smaller Systems?
No. S1000D is not suitable for smaller systems. It’s very apt for the systems which have around 1 lakh pages of documentation and the project has just initiated the documentation.
One Of The Greatest Advantages Of S1000D IsIn JSS 0852 IETM, first, documentation has to be done in JSS 251 format, in MS word then IETM activity starts. In S1000D, Separate documentation need not be done. Whatever we do in MS word will be done using s1000d Author software.
Once all the documentation is done, We can simply export them either as PDF or as IETM or XML files with Project manifest file so that these can be deployed in any other S1000d distribution servers/ CSDB studios of navy
Do We Need s1000d?
Well, to be honest, the answer is Yes and NO. It depends on how big is your System/equipment.
S1000d mostly suits to airline industry where every part has a unique number may it be AIRBUS, BOEING BUSINESS JETS, BOMBARDIER AEROSPACE, CESSNA AIRCRAFT. Parts and part numbers are the same.
How Does S1000D Work?
In S1000d documentation, every part is developed as a standalone module/document (data Module). While delivering a document, they compile all data modules and deliver. And all these companies have their own S1000d suit which costs in crores.
youtube
S1000D SOFTWARE WORKING PROCESS
They maintain a centralized repository. They maintain their own software which takes care of publishing, document management.
In our context, it won’t suit our needs and purpose. To maintain s1000d, even Clients must have s 1000d CSDB Studio or Server, and all the s1000d publications supplied by various OEMs/ Vendors will sit in that CSDB Server
For that client has to share BREX, business rules to vendors, and guidelines to all vendors so that all the documents will sit properly in the client’s S1000d CSDB Server
This is needed when the system has around 2 lakhs of documents to share. And its commercially very costly solution. If, IETM costs you 20 lakhs then S1000d costs you 80 Lakhs.
If the system is very big, like documentation for the entire Ship /flight, and documentation has just been initiated, then S1000D is the best solution. Because One S1000d is made, then we can export PDFs and also IETM from the same source files.
The Major Advantage Of S1000D
let’s say each ship is built by has 100 OEMs and all 100 OEMs supply IETMS in different formats, then it will be difficult to maintain uniformity.
If all 100 vendors give navy s1000d IETMs then all the IETMs will almost in a similar format.
To achieve this, the Navy must have an S1000d CSDB server with them to host all OEMs received by various vendors.
If the Navy does not have an S1000d CSDB Server with them, then the purpose and benefits of S1000d cant be achieved
Why CODE AND PIXELS for S1000D?
For the past 7 years, we have been executing IETM projects for Army, Navy, and Air-force in JSG 0852 format.
In 2018, the first time we received an enquiry from a Dubai-based oil and gas firm. We have also come across the s1000d term in various Navy documentation meetings. we have then initiated R&D activities on S1000D Implementation and hired S1000d experts who have worked on various defense Aerospace projects.
we have interviewed 50 members who mentioned s1000d in their profiles. We picked them from LinkedIn. They don’t even know what s1000d is. They were told that the project was s1000d, and they blindly did data entry work on the conversion of word to XML.
We initially tried to develop software for S1000d. We later realised that S1000d is not just making Doc files into XML files. It has thousands of standards of XML tags as mentioned by S1000d documentation. We have searched for an organisation that is already an expert in delivering S1000d solutions. After almost 6 months of evolution, we have done a technical tie-up with one of the best s1000d service provider company. (US-based firm); We have executed projects in S1000d successfully.

OUTSIDE OF ENGLISH THEATRE, DO WE KNOW OUR ROOTS, OUR CLASSICS, OUR ORIGINS?
This is a D&D Report from DEVOTED AND DISGRUNTLED: SHALL WE CREATE A EUROPEAN UNION OF ARTISTS? - August 2016
Here's what led to my question: Ten years ago, I created Exchange Theatre in order to translate major French plays in English. Major as in really really big. The sort of plays that tour nationally every year in a different production, or whose authors are internationally in general knowledge. Victor Hugo for example, or 20th century symbolist Paul Claudel… the French TS Eliot… You know ? No, you probably don't. And if you'd know of him, you'd probably never seen anything produced in the Uk. I know because I'm the only director to have done one of his plays in the Uk. And it was the founder show of my company ten years ago. Claudel is huge across the channel. Unknown here. This is just an example from my experience, which led to my question above.
The conversation started with people asking me to explain where I was coming from. I told how I started my company. I was a young actor working on the London Fringe, doing Shakespeare, new writings pieces, and whenever I talked about French theatre to my fellow colleagues there was either a big blank in conversations, or a total misconception of what it is. Seen as terribly classical, Moliere was reduced as period farces, excluding all his depth, and confused with Commedia Dell'Arte… ! Although, Italians were not better known: Pirandello, Dario Fo, even Goldoni are just as obscure as Spanish golden Age of Comedia and I only encountered puzzled faces when mentionning Calderon. I had trained in France and I had learned not only about Shakespeare but also Marlowe, Wordsworth, Kipling, Dahl, Pasolini, Goethe… I thought there was something terribly missing there. So, because I couldn't right the wrongs for the whole of Europe and because I trained in France and was the most knowledgeable for it, I set up my company in order to take a niche of bringing French theatre to the Uk and do it justice. Since then, we've translated for the first time plays by Feydeau, Sartre and Claudel among the most famous ones, over ten years. Little did I know when I started that there would be so much to do, so much space in the niche. In the cultural world in the Uk, there is no real figure or calculation of the place of foreign works, although according to the translator Kevin Halliwell, (the only one who translated the National Swedish treasure -playwright Lars Noren- into English) only 3% of work comes from an international background. Which will explain that you’ve never heard of Lars Noren. By comparison, France has 40% and Lars Noren is performed at the National theatre. So this is how I came up with this provocation, a decade later: In the Uk, outside of English theatre, do we know our foreign foundations too ? The conversation started by this clear statement by an English practitionner: Outside of the performing arts, we certainly don't because you don't need to. His explanation is that the educative cursus specialises very rapidly, very young and then, becomes very narrow in University. Even within the performing arts or the cultured world, we tend to lose track of these classic foreign works. Many in the panel will say that it didn't use to be this way. And it's true that when meeting scholars or practitioners older than 45, they do have a real tangible knowledge of Theatrical heritage from outside the Uk. In the 30's and 40's apparently, there was a lot more interest to foreign arts in general. Nowadays the literary, cultured intelligentsia has a certain knowledge but it's not in the culture in the Uk to share this knowledge to the general public. There is very little room in the medias to disseminate foundations of other cultures or when there is, the researchers, the speakers are invited not to talk about what they want but to talk about what the broadcaster wants, which is mainly suited to the audience. And the audience wants to be told about themselves and what they know much more than foreign narratives. It appears that directors, dramaturgs are more likely to be more knowledgeable on these questions because they have generally a university background and are led to do research outwards. But for the actors now, actor training is very limited to acting, not to the history of theatre, even less towards foreign history of theatre. Part of the problem resides in the language. In a world that speaks English universally, there is no need for people to learn other languages, so with no efforts being put in the learning of languages, it's a whole opening to the rest of the world that gets shut. The general movement in Cultural Exchanges is to go outside and bring back material not to let elements from outside come in and be integrated. This is a recurrent pattern in regards to very many themes, due to certain insularity of Britain and the system of its education too. When it comes to translating here's an anecdote about when I was working on my translation of Xavier Durringer's Bal Trap. I approached Mark Ravenhill because he was credited as the translator of a previous Durringer’splay, and I wanted to know if he would do it again, when he answered “I don’t speak French”. I was confused as his translation had been performed at the Royal Court. Then he explained: his job was to rewrite a litteral translation. Even Christopher Campbell, literary manager of the National theatre admitted recently at a symposium on French theatre (held at the French Institute) that playwrights are so important in the Uk that their credit as a translator is crucial to the commercial success of a show. It’s a great way of having David Harrower’s version of a Strindberg play or Tony Kushner’s new translation of Brecht. However good those productions and playwrights are, they are not Strindberg or Brecht, they have a style so the plays are not real translations. They are adaptations, and they make the plays more British. But an adaptation of a play takes it away from the original and this is the current model. Are we stuck here ? Someome goes even further and asks how to go beyond Europe, how to get to know non-western classics like Syrian classics for example. In a way, theatre has responded to the issue, ACE responds, NT and NTScotland and Wales have responded by nurturing even more their local cultures and languages. And even by going inwards, theatre is not more successful in general so if theatres have problems reaching out, how can they produce works that comes from outside too? Theatre is reputedly expensive and inaccessible despite all the attempts at making it more easy to access and cheaper. Actually the cheaper and easier it got to see foreign theatre, the less curious people have been. Mark Ravenhill is actually here today and arrives to join the debate at this precise moment. For him it's about Education. How education can embrace multiple identities and how the world has changed. The conversation leads to the fact that Theatre does not go as much in schools anymore apart from TIEs to learn languages or address social issues, but those are not purely cultural endeavours. In schools in general, the teaching has ‘gone bad’: we don't teach other people's history, we don't build critical thinking. And there lies a political will to create good citizens, not good critical citizens. Part of this political agenda is also in the system itself: Education is expensive and not empowering for people from under-privileged backgrounds and minorities. A mostly white British population has access to good schools and their interest are towards their own culture. It's also echoed in the treatment of equalities in the Uk. Gender and Racial equality are schemed throughout the arts and everyone agrees in those principles. There is no obvious racists in the arts, but we work in a system which functions in a divisive, racist way: since school, the chances of working in theatre are very reduced for less privileged children. Theatre and teaching therefore reflect a post-colonial structure. Obviously the debate has significantly broadened from the original question but ties in to the following development: If the system is by default a white British elite, who tell a white British narrative, it's already very hard to imagine it producing a good Asian or Black narrative. And if it's hard to imagine the system promoting its own existing diversity, how can we imagine that it would produce entirely foreign works. Although, this is what's important here: it ought to do so. Because any bridges built to go beyond our borders is crucial at the moment. After Brexit, with the rise of extremists on all sides, despite all ethnicities, what's important is to create bridges of new stimuli, address the idea of a globalising theatre too. David Lan, artistic director of the Young Vic talks about the importance of being able “to be influenced by others”, speaking about international theatre. Even for BAME artists, the importance for them to reach out to their own poets, their own roots and indigenous litteratures and extremely important to elevate the fight for diversity and not summarize it to a race equality question. The talk ends on a positive note. There are a lot of organizations already going in this direction. Esmee Fairbairn foundations funds a lot of outwards work. The Arts Council just opened an international practice department and the consensus seems to be opening up. There is also some networks like IETM, or The Fence, which are already ten years older and are pan-European structures probably most likely to partner with such endeavours. Interestingly, when finished, we talked a bit more about the thirties… before the war when people all across Europe were starting to understand the need for Inter-cultural dialogue and then this horrible world war happened and we started from scratch again, and here we are now starting to get it again… when at the same time, the shadows of more world conflicts is looming…

But any system used by the defence will have multiple manuals and thousands of page counts and many times a user has to cross-refer between manuals, intra-manual and inter-manual to resolve the issue.
Referring to 10- 15 hard-copy or even soft-copy books simultaneously will be difficult and time-consuming.
How to access the IETM ?
IETM is a web-based application like our bank software or any other web application. The graphic user interface will be provided to use IETM through which users can interact and get the desired data.
Like all other standard software, Unauthorized users cannot access the IETM. IETM is a Login - login-based application. Only users having valid Login credentials can access the software.
Based on the user log credentials data will be provided to the user.
IETM has 2 types of Users and one Administrator
Maintainer
Operator
If the operator logs in, the user gets all the content related to operator use, similarly if the maintainer logs in only maintenance-related content is visible for that user.
Ideally, all the content is available for both users, because the purpose of the IETM is to refer to the manual to fix the issue.
Administrators can create users who can see the user’s navigation and log-in history and interact with the users using user dashboards through Annotations.
What Inputs are Needed? (From OEM to Create IETM)
All the softcopies of user manuals to be converted to IETM.
All images Videos, and drawings to be integrated into IETM.
Subject matter expert to resolve technical clarifications
Table of contents/tree structure.
Minimum Hardware Requirements?
NO High-end hardware or servers are required to run IETM.
However, if more concurrent users, then a good configuration server with good LAN connectivity must be ensured.
i3 with 8 GB RAM systems is the minimum configuration required for the server or for Node.
Deliverables
BASED DB (Manuals are covered in the Database)
IETM VIEWER Software
User Manual and Installation Manual
Standards — compliance
Costing of IETM: (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual)
Level of IETM, is it Level 3 or Level 4
Cost will be based on the number of pages that are to be converted
The vendor calculates the cost per page. And a fixed cost of IETM viewer software
If you want to create IETM by yourself self then you also need to buy IETM authoring software.
What are these Levels?
Level — 1 is any PDF file
Level — 2 is a PDF file with hyperlinks from the table of contents to the body etc.
Level — 3 is an HTML application. More hyperlinks, simple search, a content tree having log a screen with a hardcoded username and password and supplied in the format of EXE so that Windows can easily open
Level — 4 is Software plus Content/manuals converted as Database
Regarding Level — 5, rest assured, till 2028 it will be Level — 4 only. As of now, there is nothing practically called Level — 5. Few are calling virtual reality and Augmented reality and Artificial intelligence Level — 5.
Pulling data from many user inputs and analyzing and giving results are done in Level — 5. IETM software cannot pull the data from various real-time points as No OEM will give the real-time information to third-party software directly. Yes, if the information is available offline, then that information can be imported into IETM and can be used as a reference.

IETM for beginners A Quick Guide to IETM
The main objective of this page is to give a quick insight into IETM. You may have many assumptions related to IETM. We tried to cover all the aspects related to IETM.
Interactive Electronic Technical Manual, in short, is called IETM. If you are a supplier of defence then along with the system/equipment you also need to provide training aids like CBT, Charts and blowup diagrams, Video films, Training work Modules, and a few sets of Hard copies of the manuals and IETM.
Till 2015, mainly Hardcopies and PDFs in DVDs used to be in deliverables. From 2015 onwards IETM is used in RFQ/SOTR/SCOPE as a deliverable.
As per the above definitions, it is clear that we need a Technical Manual that too in soft copy and which will be able to talk to us or able to respond to us.
When the Manual responds to user questions then it is called an Interactive Electronic Technical Manual.
How will the document be able to respond? We need to embed or integrate this soft copy or content into one application so that the application will respond or interact. What are the common interactivity features so that the User will be able to get the information from the software?
Interactive Features Will Be Like:
Navigation
Linear navigation (moving in the fixed or pre-defined path..e next – previous topics
Non-liner navigation ( it means the user can go to any topic randomly)
Page Search
Global Search
Best Matched
Content Tree
Related Topics
Core IETM
Documents
Drawings
Interactivity
Hyperlinks
Hot Spots
Text Hotspot
Image Hotspot
Video Hotspot
Bookmarks
Annotation
The documents and pages are many hence, for easy and fast accessibility complete content is converted and stored as a database. Whenever the user wants some information, IETM software produces the information in a fraction of a second.
IETM is a combination of software applications and databases.
What is the Use or Purpose of the IETM?
Any manual’s purpose is to give information related to the equipment to the end user for quick reference.
All the technicality is written in detail so that when an issue arises, the user can refer to the manual, as every time OEM or technical person or subject matter expert might not be available on the spot to resolve the issue.
If the manual has 10 pages users can refer easily.
Using IETM software, users can solve in a single click and seconds.
How to Access the IETM
IETM is a web-based application like our bank software or any other web application. The graphic user interface will be provided to use IETM through which users can interact and get the desired data.
Like all other standard software, Unauthorized users cannot access the IETM. IETM is Login login-based application. Only users having valid Login credentials can access the software.
Based on the user log credentials data will be provided to the user. IETM has 2 types of users and one Administrator.
Maintainer
In any case, Only OEM has the right to update or modify the content. Users can only refer to the content.
What inputs are needed from OEM to create IETM:
All the softcopies of user manuals to be converted to IETM.
All images Videos, and drawings to be integrated into IETM.
Table of contents/tree structure.
Subject matter expert to resolve technical clarifications.
All the manuals should be editable i.e. open files which do not have passwords or Locks and copy-protected PDFs.
Minimum Hardware Requirements for optimal performance of IETM
NO High-end hardware or servers are required to run IETM. However, if more concurrent users then a good configuration server with good LAN connectivity must be ensured.
i3 with 8 GB RAM systems is the minimum configuration required for the server or for Node.
Deliverables
BASED DB (Manuals are covered in the Database)
IETM VIEWER Software
User Manual and Installation Manual
Standards Compliance
The IETM framework complies with Indian Defence standards, JSG 0852
What is IETM and What is Not IETM?
IETM Vs 3D Blowups
There is a misconception about IETM. As the name indicates interactive, people assume that it is a 3D based on blowup software. Interactive means, users can browse or cross-refer or interact with the software to search on a particular topic/sub-topic.
3D Animations and blowups can be taken as separate tasks based on the complexity of the system and the level of blowups that you want. We have a separate division to take up such assignments.
If your SCOPE /SOTR /RFP says IETM then stick to IETM only.
These 3D animations, 3d Blowups, and virtual reality cost more than IETM cost. They will be good to see definitely but they are not part of IETM. If your client wants 3d and if the scope specifically mentions 3d then it is a separate deliverable but not IETM.
There is no link between IETM and 3d. If you have 3D animations or blowups, you can integrate into IETM.
Understand the difference between IETM VS CBT VS Virtual reality.
Another important point to check is which IETM level the client/ SCOPE is asking for. Generally, they may ask for Level 3 or Level 4. (If your RFQ is 5 years old around 2016-17 then they may ask for Level 2 or 3)
Level -3 costs less price than Level -4. If you have a choice to select, then select IETM -3 as it is very economical.
The latest RFPs / SCOPE asks for Level -4 only.
Costing of IETM
Level of IETM, is it Level 3 or Level 4
Cost will be based on the number of pages that are to be converted.
The vendor calculates the cost per page.
And a fixed cost of IETM viewer software.
If you want to create IETM by yourself self then you also need to buy IETM authoring software.
Regarding Level -5, rest assured, till 2028 it will be Level 4 only. As of now, there is nothing practically called Level -5. Few are calling virtual reality and Augmented reality and Artificial intelligence Level 5.
Pulling data from many user inputs and analyzing and giving results are done in Level -5.
IETM software can not pull the data from various real-time points as No OEM will give the real-time information to third-party software directly. Yes, if the information is available offline, then that information can be imported into IETM and can be used as a reference.
Implementing VR/AR and Artificial Intelligence itself costs 10 times more than the actual equipment cost. Hence for the next few years, AR/VR and artificial intelligence are affordable.
Want to see the IETM software?
Until you see the software, you will not be able to understand it fully. Hence, we strongly recommend you have a virtual meeting for 15 minutes so that you will have a fair idea about the IETM software.
Write an email to [email protected] or call 9849527706 to fix up the quick demo on IETM.
