Galaxias Chapter 1 Impressions & Discussions

So this is kinda a rare occasion. So people already know that many manga series start out as one shots. Which are then adapted and adjusted into being full blown series. The one-shot can often be a prototype for a series with the general idea that undergoes significant alterations or a pilot for the series where the one shot is essentially the first chapter.

This is one of those time where I was aware of the one shot way before it got serialized. And how could I not. After all, look at this! Of course I had to read it.

Well much to my delight I heard it was being picked up for serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine (A magazine that could use anything that wasn't romcoms) and heck even their K Manga app (Which is a whole different mess) was kind enough to upload the one shot officially translated. That's something you don't normally see and it could actually be an effective way to hype something up.

Now the Galaxias one shot is... pretty solid. An island dwelling man who lives in a light house on a world besieged by kanju dragons discovers and adopts and mysterious girl named Jio with no real memories. She is revealed to be a dragon capable of transforming into a human. The lighthouse keeper, Nereid, seems a bit distant from her due to his hatred of dragons. With Jio transforming into one to protect them from a different dragon too strong for the military. Jio knows Nereid would probably be happy without her, but he blasts the foghorn of the lighthouse during their fight and assists her. The two joining together in their new home.

Again solid. Easy chapter 1. Obviously a few tweaks would probably be necessary for serialization like a hook for a more ongoing storyline. Maybe some more fleshing out of characters. But nothing too different.

Well something I should've realized is that if K manga was cool publishing this one shot before chapter 1 was out-that means they're not gonna be the same.

So with all the preamble out of the way lets look at chapter 1 of Galaxias and the changes it made

So lets start with a simple summary: Jio is a young human girl living on an island filled with dragon folk, a race of humanoid looking people with tails coming out of their back. Jio wants to leave her island and be a great explorer like her hero Yuri Holst. But her dragon folk dad is against it. He's harsh with her but can't seem to stop her interest in the outside world.

Jio meets a man washing up on her island with no name and no memory. As such, she gives him the name Neraid after the protagonist of her favorite book penned by Yuri Holst: Galaxias. Neraid is an energetic and gogetter guy who takes to the new name, but when he asks Jio about her plans for the future she bemoans she'll probably stay on this island. Neraid tells her she's boring and that she should actually try to follow her dream.

Jio and Neraid say goodbye, but Jio find her father nearly dead at the hands of another dragon folk, a dragon knight named Yerkes. Yerkes reveals that he's hunting down Yuri in the name of his government because Yuri killed the previous dragon king. For this he is to be executed. Along with his daughter, Jio Holst. Jio's father had merely been a friend of Yuri protecting her and trying to rise her to be a good human. But now she'll die at the hands of Yerkes.

Jio is against a wall but manages to damage one of Yerkes's eyes with gunpowder. Though now it looks like she's out of tricks, Neraid comes into protect her, telling her that she's not as boring as he thought and reveals he's a dragon folk himself and defeats Yerkes.

Jio knows she can't stay on this island, but Neraid reveals he's also been looking for Yuri Holst for an undisclosed reason. So the two will team up as adventures to find Yuri and learn the truth of the previous dragon king assassination.

Now if that summary had a few things stand out to you, its that Galaxias the one shot and Galaxias the series are two totally separate beasts. So Im gonna start with the obvious differences and how I feel about them:

So the world power structure is way different as dragons seem to be the ones who rule the world instead of being invaders

The other big change is some MC role reversal. The dragon girl Jio isn’t a dragon and grew up on this island and Nereid is a dragon with amnesia.

Neraid is also not as grim as he was in the one shot. Rather he's seemed to have a complete attitude realignment to be closer to a shone protagonist Lot more energy to him.

Jio has also seems to have changed from a somewhat otherworldly infantilized daughter-esque power house to a more spunky energetic girl character

Surprisingly no Kaiju fights yet. Though leaning into the tail combat is an interesting idea so you don’t need to blow your load with full Godzilla transformations.

The doctor from the original one shot Ziess is completely gone as well as the lighthouse as a narrative marker

Noticably the art is a bit softer and thinner than before. At least, on some of the characters

These are certainly some drastic changes. And there are things that because I know of the one shot, do make me lament a bit. The more energetic Neraid defiantly doesn't bounce of Jio are the more straight man type he played originally. I think it added a level of diversity to their dynamic. Jio herself now being the weakest I also am not quite a fan of. Perhaps some think a young girl who can become a mystical creature kinda crosses too much into mascot territory, but I do generally prefer the exploration of weaker and unsuspecting characters who have a lot of power and learn new ways to use it effectively. Also just having a female MC be the powerful one in the relationship whose powers aren't harvested off by a man is still a bit rare in modern shonen. But of course I'm writing this with the knowledge of a one shot. Can't I look at this with eyes as its own thing? Yes I can.

Completely separating myself from already informed perceptions of the series, Galaxias is still a promising start. The art is good, the characters while still raw do feel defined, I like the idea of a bunch of dragon people fighting with their weird Tokyo Ghoul tails, and I love any type of modern shonen that actually tries to be a unique fantasy land and not RPG inspired fantasy or urban fantasy. Overall, much like the one shot Galaxias chapter 1 is Solid. I hope the best for its future.

Nighttime Routine (T, 6k) Stephen has a habit of falling asleep anywhere but his bed. It's not difficult to figure out how despite that, he ends up waking up in his bed every morning. With Wong's tendency to overwork himself Stephen will get an opportunity to return the favour soon enough.

The Actual Meaning of True Love's Kiss (G, 4.6k) Stephen gets himself cursed. Lifting the curse is simple, you just need a "True Love's Kiss"... Thankfully Tina Minoru is there to explain the actual meaning while Wong had a couple realisations of his own.

The Hands Dealt (G, 4.9k) Christine gifts Stephen some nail polish as a reminder of the things he liked in the past. For obvious reasons Stephen can't apply it himself and there really is just one person to ask. Wong may have rather strong feelings about getting to touch Stephen's hands.

Thoughts Shape Reality (T, 4.7k) Stephen is recognised by an overly flirtatious reporter on the street while out with America. To get the reporter to back off he tells her that he is married, and finds himself rather overwhelmed when Wong shows up, dedicated to playing the (slightly possessive) husband.

Stop for the Night (G, 4.6k) Wong keeps overworking himself in his position as Sorcerer Supreme, sacrificing both his sleep and his health. Stephen and America hatch a three phase master plan to make him take a nap.

Dance to Forget (G, 1.4k) There is always more to do in an infinite multiverse; Stephen barely stops by the Sanctum for longer than an hour or two at a time before he's already off to handle the next possible threat. It's up to Wong to see to it that Stephen slows down for a while before he breaks.

Christmas and it's more (or less) annoying traditions (G, 5.9k) Wong is not Christian. Not American either. So Christmas in New York is... an experience to say the least. Now, is someone going to explain the mistletoe?

It's not necessary to understand my work, but I personally do love being able to dig into that kind of trivia and writers' thoughts and maybe one or two of you do too. Same for the plethora of OCs I've established so Kamar-Taj is actually lived in (most recurring one being Master Jio, the elder master of the infirmary who is 100% done with both Stephen and Wong [affectionate]). An even deeper dive into Jiovanni's Family and Background

The family of Jiovanni Dasis is one of relative obscurity. What is known is that his father Pietro Dasis was originally from The Reach and continued to own property there even after he moved to King's Landing where he became a very successful merchant specializing in cloth imported from Essos and Braavos. Pietro seems to have something of a passion for Braavosi culture even marrying the daughter of an impoverished keyholder named Pica. Their eldest son Jiovanni was born when Pietro was away on business. Pica who was deeply religious* and named the child after the wild prophet who foretold to coming of the Seven to Hugor of the Hill. Pietro hated the name and referred to his son almost exclusively as 'Jio' a nickname that stuck to the boy throughout his life. A younger brother followed when Jiovanni was five named Torone** followed shortly thereafter by three sisters named Wendeyne, Talea and Yna. From the beginning Pietro seemed intent on molding his eldest son into an ideal heir who would continue the family's upward mobility and take over their business interests. Jiovanni himself was outgoing, good natured and easily made friends while accompanying his father on business trips. When not accompanying his father on various ventures the young Jiovanni preferred the company of his mother and younger sisters. He seems to have enjoyed their softer more domestic world and tales of chivalry than that of his father. His tutors noted he was both an excellent singer and dancer but no scholar.

This description of Jiovanni's life is perhaps overly idyllic. When in truth even at this early stage there were signs of conflict in the Dasis household. Pietro and his wife often quarreled especially when it came to their different views on how to raise their eldest son who they both favored with Jiovanni frequently seeking refuge from their arguments by fleeing either to the servants' quarters or the surrounding countryside when the family was in The Reach. These fights would often become physical and spill over to the children as Pietro Dasis was firmly of the kind to assert his will physically especially when it came to controlling his family and children.

As he grew older Jiovanni threw himself into the youthful pursuit of pleasure and became a favorite of the young people in King's Landing. He was also a natural leader frequently setting new trends and coming up with outlandish japes and revelries. All of which his father happily bankrolled to continue the family's upward mobility. It would be easy to think all was going according to his father's plan, Jiovanni's instinct for people made him a canny salesman and buyer even. While conflict was likely always inevitable it began to arise more often as Jiovanni's younger brother Torone also came of age. Torone was a great deal like their father and was intent on proving his worth to their father as a businessman something Jiovanni frequently allowed him to do as he found the day-to-day details of business tiresome and preferred interacting with people and getting to know them than treating them as merely customers. Things came to a head when Jiovanni began to go on trips of his own some ostensibly for business, more frequently he returned to The Reach where he frequently roamed the countryside listening to the so-called 'small folk'. It was becoming increasingly clear a change was undergoing within Jiovanni and when he did return to King's Landing he began to withdraw from his old lifestyle giving exorbitantly to the poor and frequently seeking refuge in the Sept, a Septon Ugino Moon was instrumental during this time counseling the young Jiovanni.. All of which caused increasingly more conflict with his father which became violent and increasingly public with Jiovanni frequently seeking refuge at the Sept or with sympathetic friends. The arguments between Pietro and Jiovanni culimated in Pietro trying to sue Jiovanni for the money he had given to the poor, Pietro claimed that as his father everything Jiovanni had was his even the clothes on his back.*** In frustration Jiovanni stripped naked and tossed his clothes at his father's feet declaring he wasn't his his father's son anymore. Septon Ugino dressed the youth in the robe of a Begging Brother**** . Neither father or son ever spoke publicly of each other ever again. *****

*While a follower of the Seven, Pica's views were colored by her Braavosi heritage. Some of the views she passed onto her eldest son especially would likely be considered heretical by most Westerosi standards.

** Torone was born while Jiovanni was accompanying his father for the first time on a business trip.

*** From a strictly legal perspective this isn't untrue, Jiovanni was essentially his father's employ and any money he made was 'within the family'. In his growing zeal for his newfound faith Jiovanni acted impulsively.

**** While Jiovanni dressed in the robes of a Begging Brother he didn't initially tonsure his hair feeling he was unworthy of taking formal vows. However when he developed a following he did tonsure his hair to show he was no threat to the established order and willing submitted to the High Septon's authority.

***** Two of Jiovanni's sisters, Yna and Wendeyne later took vows. Yna as a Silent Sister and Wendeyne as a Septa.

Exploring the Andaman Islands: A Guide to Port Blair, Swaraj Dweep, and Neil Island

In December 2023, I explored the Andaman Islands, an extraordinary place. Here’s how it went and some advice if you plan.

Chapter 1: Exploring Port Blair

Cellular Jail Light Show: This is something you've got to see. I booked the 7:30 pm show online. It’s really hot there, so bringing a water bottle is a good idea.

Samudrika Marine Museum: This place is amazing. It displays rare sea creatures and provides information about the local tribes. It’s definitely not your ordinary museum.

Marina Park and Corbyn's Cove Beach: Spending an evening at Marina Park is so peaceful. It’s a great spot to relax. Then, I took a quick ride to Corbyn's Cove Beach. The beach itself is okay, not the best, but it’s a nice place to visit. The jet ski experience there is pretty cool. Also, make sure to check out Flag Point; it’s along the same route.

Chapter 2: Adventures in Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island)

Ferry to Swaraj Dweep: If you're going to Havelock, definitely opt for the deluxe class on the ferry. The sea can get pretty rough, and the extra comfort really helps.

Elephant Beach: This place is a paradise for fun activities. You can enjoy snorkelling, seawalk, and jet skiing. Trekking there gives you more time to enjoy everything. The snorkelling is a must-do – the coral and fish are just amazing. And the seawalk, well, it's something else. I couldn’t do it because my ears didn’t agree, but you should totally try it if you can. It's the only place in India where you can do this.

Kalapathar Beach: The sunrise here is absolutely stunning. I rented a scooty, which was great because I got to enjoy Kalapathar in the morning and then head to Radhanagar later in the day. Radhanagar Beach is just so beautiful, especially at sunset. And hey, if you're there, get some photos taken. There are local photographers around who really know their stuff – they've got the best poses and spots figured out.

Chapter 3: Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) Discoveries

Lakshmanpur Beach: This beach is a quiet place where you can really feel the peace. The sea level changes a lot here, which is cool to watch. But a heads-up about Neil Island — it's a bit off the grid. If you're relying on your phone, you might find it tricky. I barely got any signal with Jio, and Airtel was just a little better.

General Observations and Conclusion In Andaman, the locals are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home. It's funny, due to the islands not being overly crowded, you often bump into the same tourists at different spots, which adds a familiar feel to the whole trip. It's perfect for family vacations – I'd totally recommend bringing your parents along. Wrapping it up, Andaman is a world apart from busier places like Goa. It's the ideal spot if you're looking for a laid-back, family-friendly getaway. The rich Bengali culture and stunning natural beauty here make it a truly unique destination.
