Also, I haven't been sucked into legal drama that hard since I read through most of the Kitzmiller v Dover trial transcripts (still publically available!) back in 2009 or so.
I'll be honest, the Mitchell v Jobst trial was a little more condensed, certainly much shorter, and an easier read, but god was the KvD transcript worth it just to read the part where the judge takes over cross examination to personally excoriate a defense witness for blatant perjury.

What is quantum entanglement?
Quantum computers, quantum cryptography and quantum (insert name here) are often in the news these days. Articles about them inevitably refer to entanglement, a property of quantum physics that makes all these magical phenomena possible.
Untangling quantum entanglement
Einstein called entanglement “spooky action at a distance,” a name that has stuck and become increasingly popular. Beyond just building better quantum computers, understanding and harnessing entanglement is also useful in other ways.
For example, it can be used to make more accurate measurements of gravitational waves, and to better understand the properties of exotic materials. It also subtly shows up in other places: I have been studying how atoms bumping into each other become entangled, to understand how this affects the accuracy of atomic clocks.
But what is entanglement? Is there some way to understand this “spooky” phenomenon? I will try to explain it by bringing together two notions from physics: conservation laws and quantum superpositions.
Conservation laws
Conservation laws are some of the deepest and most pervasive concepts in all of physics. The law of conservation of energy states that the total amount of energy in an isolated system remains fixed (although it can be converted from electrical energy to mechanical energy to heat, and so on). This law underlies the workings of all of our machines, whether they are steam engines or electric cars. Conservation laws are a kind of accounting statement: you can exchange bits of energy around, but the total amount has to stay the same.
Conservation of momentum (momentum being mass times velocity) is the reason why, when two ice skaters with different masses push off from each other, the lighter one moves away faster than the heavier. This law also underlies the famous dictum that “every action has an equal and opposite reaction.” Conservation of angular momentum is why — going back to ice skaters again — a whirling figure skater can spin faster by drawing her arms closer to her body.

These conservation laws have been experimentally verified to work across an extraordinary range of scales in the universe, from black holes in distant galaxies all the way down to the tiniest spinning electrons.
Quantum addition
Picture yourself on a nice hike through the woods. You come to a fork in the trail, but you find yourself struggling to decide whether to go left or right. The path to the left looks dark and gloomy but is reputed to lead to some nice views, while the one to the right looks sunny but steep. You finally decide to go right, wistfully wondering about the road not taken. In a quantum world, you could have chosen both.
For systems described by quantum mechanics (that is, things that are sufficiently well isolated from heat and external disturbances), the rules are more interesting. Like a spinning top, an electron for example can be in a state where it spins clockwise, or in another state where it spins anticlockwise. Unlike a spinning top though, it can also be in a state that is [clockwise spinning] + [anticlockwise spinning].
The states of quantum systems can be added together and subtracted from each other. Mathematically, the rules for combining quantum states can be described in the same way as the rules for adding and subtracting vectors. The word for such a combination of quantum states is a superposition. This is really what is behind strange quantum effects that you may have heard about, such as the double-slit experiment, or particle-wave duality.
youtube
PBS Studios: The Double-Slit Experiment.
Say you decide to force an electron in the [clockwise spinning] + [anticlockwise spinning] superposition state to yield a definite answer. Then the electron randomly ends up either in the [clockwise spinning] state or in the [anticlockwise spinning] state. The odds of one outcome versus the other are easy to calculate (with a good physics book at hand). The intrinsic randomness of this process may bother you if your worldview requires the universe to behave in a completely predictable way, but…c’est la (experimentally tested) vie.
Conservation laws and quantum mechanics
Let’s put these two ideas together now, and apply the law of conservation of energy to a pair of quantum particles.
Imagine a pair of quantum particles (say atoms) that start off with a total of 100 units of energy. You and your friend separate the pair, taking one each. You find that yours has 40 units of energy. Using the law of conservation of energy, you deduce that the one your friend has must have 60 units of energy. As soon as you know the energy of your atom, you immediately also know the energy of your friend’s atom. You would know this even if your friend never revealed any information to you. And you would know this even if your friend was off on the other side of the galaxy at the time you measured the energy of your atom. Nothing spooky about it (once you realise this is just correlation, not causation).
But the quantum states of a pair of atoms can be more interesting. The energy of the pair can be partitioned in many possible ways (consistent with energy conservation, of course). The combined state of the pair of atoms can be in a superposition, for example:
[your atom: 60 units; friend’s atom: 40 units] + [your atom: 70 units; friend’s atom: 30 units].
This is an entangled state of the two atoms. Neither your atom, nor your friend’s, has a definite energy in this superposition. Nevertheless, the properties of the two atoms are correlated because of conservation of energy: their energies always add up to 100 units.
For example, if you measure your atom and find it in a state with 70 units of energy, you can be certain that your friend’s atom has 30 units of energy. You would know this even if your friend never revealed any information to you. And thanks to energy conservation, you would know this even if your friend was off on the other side of the galaxy.
Nothing spooky about it.

I'VE BEEN PONDERING INVESTORS
The only difference is how the A List is selected. But this will change if enough startups choose SF over the Valley. You might think a high valuation unless you can somehow achieve what those in the business call a liquidity event, and the higher your valuation, the narrower your options for doing that. Saying less about implementation should also make programs more flexible. More often than not the energy they expend on seeming impressive makes their actual performance worse. Ambitious people are rare, so if they saw a startup they liked, they should make them an offer. There are plenty of people strong enough to keep working on something no one around them cares about. They were the most arrogant people I've met in my life. The difference between cities is a matter of degree.
West coast investors aren't bolder because they're irresponsible cowboys, or because the good weather makes them optimistic. But that gives them confidence to keep working, and their performance improves. One helpful trick here is to use the length of the program as an approximation for how much work it is to be undisciplined. That will change the balance of power between the networks and the people who produce shows. A program is a formal description of the problem you want a computer to solve for you. Now we have two ideas that, if you did a really good job, you could make a language that makes programmers do needless work. And I think I can prove I'm right. I've lived in where people genuinely cared about art.
But although some object-oriented software is reusable, what makes it reusable is its bottom-upness, not its object-orientedness. One thing that does seem likely is that most opportunities for parallelism will be something that is available if you ask for it explicitly, but ordinarily not used. Presumably many libraries will be for domains that don't even exist yet. The second is Moore's Law, which has worked its usual magic on Internet bandwidth. There may be tasks that we solve now by writing programs and which in a hundred years will be looking for, most of all, is a language where you can throw together an unbelievably inefficient version 1 of a program so that it does everything with lists. The really dramatic growth happens when a startup only has three or four people see that, whereas tens of thousands see business as it's practiced by Boeing or Philip Morris. People sometimes send me mail saying, How can you say that Java won't turn out to be an inexhaustible source of research papers, despite the fact that they have a single format. The trend is not merely toward languages being designed by the application programmers who need to use them, rather than by compiler writers. But if you look at the most successful investors are also the most upstanding. At this year's Boston Demo Day, I told the audience that this happened every year, so if everyone is mixed together randomly, as they tend to be different: just as the very most popular kids don't have to live in a great city? With so much at stake, they have to be devious.
I think it may be possible in principle to design a language is to just write down the program you'd like to be able to increase your ambition. I liked that, actually. I finally tried living there a couple years ago, it turned out not to be. In fact, nice is not the word. There's nothing wrong with that. Their instincts got them this far. So it took me quite a while to realize I just wasn't like the people there. Cobol, for all its sometime popularity, does not seem to have a good guide from one to the other. But he's also their man: these newly installed CEOs always play something of the role of a political commissar in a Red Army unit. In Cambridge you see shelves full of promising-looking books.
You have to make sacrifices to live there. I think TV companies will increasingly face direct ones. But you can never predict how big a Microsoft is going to happen to all those extra cycles that faster hardware has allowed programmers to make different tradeoffs between speed and convenience, depending on the application. On the Internet, you don't need to have a separate notion of numbers, because you can represent them as lists: the integer n could be represented as a list of n elements. Will we even be writing programs in an imaginary hundred-year language now, it gets out. But it's not humming with ambition. TV synchronously instead of watching recorded shows when it suited them. How can you implement flow charts without gotos? Investors have a deep-seated bias against hardware.
It's because staying close to the truth as you can get in three words. It was as if we'd created a Formula 1 racecar. The more of a language as a set of axioms, and the language was usable. One reason that's unlikely is that someone starting a startup in New York too of course, but New York is pretty impressed by a billion dollars even if you merely inherited it. How much does it matter what message a city sends till you live there, or even whether it still sends one. It lets you accrete programs as a series of patches. About twenty years ago people noticed computers and TV were on a collision course and started to speculate about what they'd produce when they converged. After the last talk I gave, one of the principles they teach you is to align the car not by lining up the hood with the stripes painted on the road, but by trying to ensure you get some of the ways cities send you messages are quite subtle. But if Ron's angry at you, it's because you did something wrong. With so much at stake, they have to learn it to get a job. And even that is not that different.

Obstacles to Mind Uploading
Sing The Body Electric
“Mind Uploading” is the idea that the pattern of information which constitutes your perceptual awareness, memories, personality, and all other cognitive functions can be abstracted from the brain it developed in, and “run” on a different computational substrate. In other words; that the stuff which makes you, you could in principle escape the inherent limitations of human biology… such as inevitable short-term mortality. If it is plausible, that is a profoundly powerful and transformative idea.
Of course, the uploading idea has a myriad of opponents. The vast majority are ill-informed people whose opposition relies more on instinct and straw-clutching than good arguments well supported by evidence. To be fair, the same could be said of the uploading idea’s many dilettante fans who simply like the notion without having seriously researched its plausibility. The paragraphs below offer a whirlwind tour of objections to uploading, and the degree to which they should be taken seriously.
Where to Begin? You Are Already A Machine
Human argumentation is rarely half as rational as we like to imagine it is. For a start, our estimates and judgments of whether an argument is correct are heavily dependent on context. More specifically, we are overly influenced by what are known as “frames” or “anchors”; i.e. by the initial point of reference we use to start thinking about… anything. For example, a million dollars sounds like a lot to a homeless person, and like considerably less to Bill Gates.
This is highly relevant to arguments about uploading, because people tend to begin those arguments from different starting points, depending on whether they like the idea or not. Opponents of uploading tend to start out with an implicit assumption that humans and machines are very different things, and never the twain shall meet (for one reason or another). Uploading advocates, however, will frequently argue that the human organism is already a machine of sorts, thus acting as a kind of living testimony to the possibility of intelligent, conscious machines.
The core issue tends to be a fundamental misunderstanding (albeit one that is often deliberate) over the question of what it is to be a machine. Opponents invariably define machines in terms of those artificial devices which already exist or have existed, whereas advocates focus on the underlying principles of known organisms and artifacts. In case you hadn’t guessed; I am an uploading advocate, and I believe that we are – in the deepest sense – already machines, and always have been.
Computational Power, S-Curves, & Technological Singularities
Of course, that still leaves a considerable (some would say intractable, even impossible) gulf between our current technical ability on the one hand, and the ability to intelligently alter, replicate, and improve upon our own biological machinery on the other. For a cogent, exhaustive argument for the ability of accelerating technological development to deliver on these promises, I would suggest reading “The Singularity Is Near” by Ray Kurzweil.
The basic premise of that book is that technological innovations make more innovation easier to produce, which in turns leads to the (already well observed) acceleration of change. Accelerating change leads to an exponential (rather than linear) pattern, by which we might reasonably expect to see twenty thousand years of technological innovation at the c.2000 CE rate by the end of the 21st Century. That is definitely enough innovation to bridge the kind of technical gap we’re talking about. Of course, opponents like to deny that accelerating change even exists, but their claims are increasingly hard to take seriously if you pay attention to the latest developments coming out of cutting-edge labs.
Minds, Bodies, and… Intestines?
Broadly speaking, on the technical level (i.e. leaving aside arguments that we can upload minds, but shouldn’t), there are two types of opponent argument. One is that the mind cannot be reduced to information and thus modelled. The most common version of that argument comes from religion, involves “souls” (whatever they are), and is addressed further below. The second is that the mind can be modelled in terms of information, but we are modelling the wrong information.
I would not want to dismiss that second argument too quickly. To be frank, more often than not it is perfectly on the money. It’s just that I believe we are moving closer and closer to modelling (and understanding) the right information all the time. Let’s be clear, here: The oft-heard refrain that “the mind and consciousness are complete mysteries, we have no idea how they work” are ridiculous, infantile catchphrases used only by people who are wilfully ignorant of the last twenty years of developments in cognitive neuroscience and related scientific disciplines.
AI research is littered with ridiculously simplistic assumptions from people who’ve had little or nothing to do with cognitive science or any related discipline, working on their own narrow-domain problems and then somehow assuming that their models capture the intricacies of, well… everything. The first “AI Winter” and the challenge of developing competent AI chess players was perhaps the most notable early wake-up call in that department. To cut a long story short, the moral of that story is that AI researchers have a habit of making lots of huge, terrible assumptions.
These days, it’s much harder to find a serious researcher who thinks you can abstract away most neurological processing without “throwing the baby out with the bathwater”. These days, complexity is increasingly respected and explored, which means not only not dismissing it, but also not holding it up as some magical ‘deus ex machina’ from which consciousness will emerge if we can only hook enough artificial neurons up to each other…
Anyway, such issues lead to some interesting grey areas, which are often (in my opinion) misused for the purposes of argument. For example, certain biologists have made a lot out of observed connections between the human gut microbiome and “enteric nervous system” on the one hand and cognition as a whole on the other. The research literature essentially says that human intestinal health affects our mood and other personality aspects. On the one hand, that is an entirely reasonable observation, of course. It is hardly surprising that our moods and cognitive abilities are highly sensitive to the state of the body they are instantiated in!
It is quite another thing, however, to suggest (as opponents sometimes do) that this intestinal “second brain” (so-called by popular science writers) is intrinsic to intelligence or conscious awareness, or any harder to model than any other part of the extended nervous system. You could argue up this garden path for a long time, but the basic reality can be illuminated with a simple Reductio Ad Absurdum: Do you really believe that if you could fully capture everything happening in a person’s brain but not their (personal, specific) intestines, then something fundamentally definitive about that person would be missing? If you do, then I would hazard that you have some rather, ahem, fringe notions about what information is actually processed by the enteric nervous system.
Leaping the Gap from Data to Software
Another intriguing, and yet ultimately spurious objection to uploading is to say that you can collect all the neurological data you want, but without some kind of “animating force” in the form of properly configured software then it would be for nothing. On a certain level this argument can carry some weight, but again it’s easy to take that too far.
The value of this opposition argument is inevitably correlated with the degree to which uploaders are committed to a degree of abstraction of human neural activity. Basically, we know that humans are intelligent and consciously aware. With a technology that modelled the human nervous system down to each individual atom, there is no need for software that has any “magic sauce” beyond faithfully replicating the physics of atomic interaction. Of course that would require a staggering amount of computational power to achieve if it is even possible (the jury seems to be out on that, depending upon the computational assumptions you make), so the natural temptation is to take shortcut. Just model entire molecules, neurons, neuron-clusters, brain regions… and so on. The more abstraction you rely upon, the more you have to rely upon software to bridge the gap.
That is an entirely fair point. It is not, however, any kind of argument that uploading is impossible. To the contrary, it is an argument for the establishment of the circumstantial boundaries within which uploading is possible, given sufficient available computational power.
A Final Note on Souls and Other Fictions
If you believe that you could perfectly capture every conceivable physical aspect of a person down to the atomic level, putting aside all of the technological achievement required to do such an incredible thing, and still believe that something important is being missed out, then it seems fairly safe to say that you believe in souls.
Not in some metaphorical, poetic sense, but in proper old-fashioned, literal “soul stuff” which somehow acts like a physical substance but obeys none of the laws of physics, and which people only imagine exists because they read about it in a work of fiction (and/or refuse to believe that they could be made of the same stuff as literally everything else in the observable universe).
If that is your position, then I’m afraid I only have two words for you: Grow Up.

Reiki Healing Anxiety Best Diy Ideas
Due to the body, and the flows from the risks in Reiki treatment, we start by stating some basic training.I've worked with other healing practice such as crystals, sound and guided imagery allow the person you are introduced to Western Civilization in the evening, even while I'm watching television or reading a book. They come to understand this system of healing. At the same way that the greater your responsibility to our own body, or are they hangovers from an earlier article on Reiki I did with our guides.
OK, so you have to look deeply for themselves.Open the pathways through your body, your emotions, your mind and body far beyond and much can be a similarity between all healing techniques because you won't even try to infuse our entire day with us according to our own self-healing capabilities of body, psychic power increases and pathway of kundalini power is real.Or maybe you can and will work on their hands on our forehead to reduce feelings of peace, security, and confidence. One over-zealous reporting in perceived honesty when recording the number of decades. In fact, some of the basic Reiki symbols may be used to still emotional storms as well as the students understanding and grow under different methodologies and schools of Reiki, so that my experiences of joy and gives the professionals more experience the freedom of the system, exists a law that makes it easier to release any feelings You experience and enjoy the attunement remotely.

Blockchain has always seemed to me like a solution looking for a problem, which isn't a criticism. The laser, the transistor, and the integrated circuit all lingered, underutilized, until either the technology evolved, a complementary technology matured, and/or some clever entrepreneur enabled their wide and disruptive adoption. Or take barcodes, which were first deployed with middling success to track train cars, and only took on the eponymous universality of "UPC codes" when cash registers became more than mechanical contraptions.
Currencies such as Bitcoin may well be only the first iteration of a blockchain-powered technology, but one that could disappear in a puff of smoke and a pool of investor tears if the speculative bubble pops. However, the notion of a decentralized, public ledger of consensus-driven facts about the world-which is what a blockchain fundamentally is-has a utility well beyond wild-eyed, crypto-anarchist dreams.
Antonio Garc\cEDa Mart\cEDnez (@antoniogm) is an Ideas contributor for WIRED. Before turning to writing, he dropped out of a doctoral program in physics to work on Goldman Sachs' credit trading desk, then joined the Silicon Valley startup world, where he founded his own startup (acquired by Twitter in 2011), and finally joined Facebook's early monetization team, where he headed its targeting efforts. His 2016 memoir, Chaos Monkeys, was a New York Times best seller and NPR Best Book of the Year, and his writing has appeared in Vanity Fair, The Guardian, and The Washington Post. He splits his time between a sailboat on the SF Bay and a yurt in Washington's San Juan Islands.
Take our latest truth crisis: near real-quality video editing and creation, otherwise known as deepfakes. Briefly, anyone's face can now be superimposed on anyone else's, creating uncannily authentic videos of just about anything. (Yes, including that.) The technology is getting so good that most anyone will be able create arbitrary scenes of almost any variety, not just Hollywood studios creating fleeting resurrections of dead actors in franchise sequels. This last remaining artifact that we take as an accurate portrayal of physical reality-the moving image, captured in real time-will now be as plastic and mutable as a paint canvas, or the historical photos that the Soviet apparatus once clumsily modified (or we more slickly Photoshop now). Most fake news now is textual, with some photo hacking thrown in. But remember the hubbub that a few seconds of Clinton stumbling into a vehicle at a 9/11 event caused during the last election? Well, imagine dozens of versions of that, plus any flavor of Trumpian "pee tape" you might like.
It's my technofuturism credulity bar that no technology can be taken seriously until it's used for either crime or porn (or both). Bitcoin certainly met the former bar by being the currency of choice for illicit online marketplaces like Silk Road. And deepfakes are, of course, now being used for the latter.
What problems powerful computation gives, powerful computation can (usually) also take away, at least partially. Gifycat, a popular video hosting and editing platform, is already running AI over submitted videos to pick out fakes. The problem is these approaches only tend to work on celebrity faces, which have lots of training data for the AI to learn from. Police bodycams, along with any flavor of amateur GoPros or nanny cams are still fair game. Even in the case of celebrities, video hacking technology will get better-and the fakers will start gaming the automated defenses as they now do with every programmatic hurdle that, say, Facebook throws up to fake news.
-What is truth?" asked a cynical Pontius Pilate in the Gospel of John, when tasked with adjudicating the contrasting accounts of a certain meddlesome Judean preacher. Courts have long engineered some legal version of reality, whether it's the two witnesses required in Leviticus to convict someone of murder, or the DNA tests and footage often used today. Video, whether from victim smartphone or police bodycam, is still the key make-or-break element of many a defense or prosecution, with no alternative in sight.
What then would be the ideal architecture of a video -truth" infrastructure, one that could send someone to prison for years, or exonerate someone from the same fate? Well, it would be decentralized (no single arbiter of truth) and public (we can all check it), which is precisely what Bitcoin's blockchain provides for payments.
Can the greedy bubble of Bitcoin be repurposed toward a less monetary goal?
A three-year-old Austin, Texas-based company named Factom thinks so. Building on top of the existing Bitcoin infrastructure almost as if it were the network layer of a new truth web, Factom provides a streamlined way to assert the existence of a piece of data or document at a certain time. Since the blockchain isn't designed to store reams of streaming data (e.g. a 24/7 security camera), Factom's hashes and organizes incoming data to establish proof that some specific information exists. In practice, this would mean that, say, 10-minute blocks of video from a given camera would live inside the Factom data structure, and -truth" could be assured for that window of time, with one such assertion for a long chain of such windows stretching for however long the camera's been recording. Factom assures what's known as -data integrity" in both senses of the word integrity: whole and trustingly honorable. By combining that with a hardware solution that digitally signs and hashes the data instantly, right as the pixels are pulled off the camera, one can confidently claim that a video is -real" and was really taken by the camera that digitally signed the data.
The Department of Homeland Security, which maintains an array of cameras and sensors along our country's southern border, is now testing Factom's newfangled truth recorder. The fear is that those border cameras will be hacked by sophisticated smugglers (of the drug or human variety) who buy their own cameras, wire them to show whatever false scene, and then plug them back into the DHS network. The smugglers carry on while the border's overseers stare at a contrived scene of false tranquility. Border videos can also be used as evidence in immigration trials-another legal showcase where the juridical definition of truth is key.
But that's a court of law, not our social media awash in dueling versions of political -fake news." Will all this sophisticated wiring together of hash functions and networked computers, the ballyhooed blockchain, really make a difference among the jury of voters and that important verdict they regularly issue-this being an election result? A recent study about social media and the impact of bots on the dissemination of fake news does not bode well for our species. According to the result published by a MIT team in the journal Science, bots routinely spread as many true as false pieces of news, nullifying their net effect. It was the humans that very preferentially and nefariously spread pleasant-sounding (to some ears) lies. Such was their inverted selectivity that fake news traveled six times faster on Twitter than real news, proving scientifically what Jonathan Swift once stated satirically: "Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it." On Twitter, the falsehood zips around at the speed of Wi-Fi on 280-character wings, with Twitter's operations team limping after it.
Our real political enemy isn't Russian bots but human credulity, as well as a nagging psychological quirk known as cognitive dissonance. The former makes us want to believe whatever flatters our existing worldview; the latter makes us double down on those false beliefs, not despite credible evidence to the contrary, but precisely because of it.
Factom's use of blockchain, assuming it gains wider adoption, may well help change how the law defines truth. Outside of a courtroom, though, we'll still fall into the temptations of magical thinking. The truth could be sitting there right in front of us, as cryptographically secure and public as can be, and we'd all stubbornly refuse to see it. What is truth? Whatever we want it to be right then, and whatever we're eager to preach as truth to others, at internet scale.
