Zanshin
or "unagi" as Ross from Friends calls a state of total awareness, is what I was thinking about today as I was walking down the street to catch the train.
Zanshin is what in Japanese martial arts we aspire to attain, because it is the best mind state for self-defense. I'm a state of total awareness you see both danger and opportunity. Also, you live a more fulfilling and appreciative life. I believe it was the Aikido master Koichi Tohei who talked about how to attain this kind of awareness in his book "Ki in Daily Life." The idea is, when you eat, just eat. Don't eat and work, don't eat and watch TV. Don't multitask because when you do, each individual task suffers.
When you multitask... let's say, when you're driving somewhere and you're head's all wrapped around the things you have to do that day, you may arrive at your destination and have little to no recollection of how you got there. You dissociated from the one task you were doing, which was driving, and that put you at risk of being oblivious to many things, like crazy drivers, other accident-causing things, and you may just feel overwhelmed and underaccomplished.
That's why we strive for total awareness. For self-protection and fulfillment. To practice, it's simple mindfulness. Emptying your mind of extraneous thoughts and just doing "the thing at hand."
So yesterday I...and mind you, I continually try to improve my awareness and mindfulness, I must have experienced a few triggers that left me feeling a little abandoned and self-critical. I dreamed that I left my bicycle unattended and unlocked in a dark yard, and it got stolen. I found the thief and tried to confront him to get my bike back, but he was part of a gang, and the gang leader captured me and threatened me with a crowbar.
So what did I do? I reenacted the entire series of events, exactly the same way, hoping for a different result, but alas, I wound up right back in the hands of the enemy. I didn't even entertain the idea of trying to defend myself until near the end of the dream, and even then it was a very feeble attempt. I woke up so poorly rested and bothered that I hit the snooze button at least 6 times. Then I resolved to take the late train to work. Because I simply needed time to breathe and empty my mind, clean the dishes, feed the animals....
So I got to feeling a little desperate about improving my situation and getting back in track with all my goals. My fitness and health, my career and finances, you know. So as I was walking to the train I was reminded of zanshin. And I put my phone in my pocket until I got into the train and then started this post. Which btw I am now writing for the third time because for some reason Tumblr does not want to successfully post my post. It's giving me agita. So now I'm writing in my notes app, hoping it prevents me from having to start all over again. I don't know if this version is better or worse than the first two. Probably worse. Sorry.
Now, this weekend I was a pretty prolific little beader. I finished that macramé bracelet I learned from Rings&Things. Only I didn't have the little metal clasp, so I tried doing a simple adjustable knot. But I ended up with two extra strings that I had to tie off and made it look a little messy. I'm trying to see how I can avoid this in the future without having to use a clasp. Because I like simplicity. Here's how she came out:

And this is the close-up:

I used hemp cord like they suggested, which is fairly easy to work with. The trick is in getting all the knots at an even degree of taughtness, which I guess you get by practice.
I also made some more men's beaded necklaces in my new, minimalist design of one color with a band of a second color. Here's a black and brown, 8mm, 28-inch necklace that I put up for sale in my Etsy shop, which is called JesimaJewelry:

I used nylon cord for this, still my favorite as it's very strong and doesn't fray easily. Plus, if you get the short, 2-meter wraps of it, it comes with a sort of needle at the end that makes stringing a lot easier.
I'm clearing out all my older designs after getting some feedback by real live men who seem to want to see simpler necklaces--even just one color--which by comparison make the first few necklaces I made seem rather gaudy. Fun, but I'm headed toward simple, like everything else in my life. Here is another that I made yesterday, slightly larger, brown and black, 10mm and 29 inches:

This time I used waxed cotton cord, which is also strong but not as pretty as the nylon. I put glue on the tips (learned this on Rings&Things too) to make it easier to thread.
I've started imagining my new design in various color combinations, black-on-brown, and vice versa, maybe I'll do a black one with a white band that's broken in the middle and call it "I Ching"... yass!
