Gau mata morning darshan shubh hai "Lathiwala Daily vlog FYP by The Lathiwala Gau mata morning me darshan shubh hai "Lathiwala Daily vlogs" fyp धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः इसका अर्थ है कि "धर्म की रक्षा करने पर (रक्षा करने वाले की धर्म ) रक्षा करता है।" दूसरे शब्दों में, "रक्षित धर्म, रक्षक की रक्षा करता है"। धर्म एव हतो हन्ति धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितःतस्माद्धर्मो न हन्तव्यो मा नो धर्मो हतोऽवधीत् ॥ Q: Why are cows sacred to Hindus? A: In India, the cow is considered a sacred animal. She is revered, honored and respected. Here are five reasons cows are considered holy. #1 Mother of All Most Hindus are vegetarian and a great deal of Indian cuisine revolves around dairy products. Yogurt, milk, curd, butter and ghee are all mainstays of Indian cooking. In India, when a baby has stopped nursing he/she goes on to be nourished by cow's milk and so the cow is venerated as a mother. In fact, she is seen as a mother to all beings - gentle, kind and nurturing. Many Hindus see killing a cow as equivalent to killing one's own mother. It is considered a cardinal sin and is punishable by law in most Indian states. (Learn more in How a Plant-Based Diet Makes Better Yogis.) #2 Milk and Ghee The Vedas describe cow's milk as ambrosial, akin to divine nectar. It is considered to be a sattvic food in Ayurveda and is said to improve meditation practice due to it's calming effect. Warm milk contains the amino acid, tryptophan, which is a precursor to the neurotransmitter, serotonin, which is responsible for feelings of serenity and well-being. Vedic rituals prescribe the use of ghee as a libation in sacred rituals such as the Yagna and Homa. These fire rituals are central to Hindu worship and are performed at all important life stages: marriage, the birth of a child, during funeral rites, as well as a part of daily worship. Like milk, ghee is also considered to be a sattvic food. It promotes intellectual acuity and is thought to have invigorating properties. It is commonly used to treat pitta dosha imbalances. (Read more in Golden Milk: A Yogi's Drink.) #3 Ahimsa (Non-violence) The gentle nature of cows, with their large dark eyes and soft muzzles, evokes a natural sense of calm. Hindus view this kind disposition to be symbolic of ahimsa, or compassionate non-violence. Ahimsa is one of Hinduism's main tenets and Hindus see cows as a natural embodiment of this virtue. Many gods and goddesses are associated with the cow. The earth goddess, Bhumi, is often depicted as a cow and Lord Krishna is known as Govinda, the protector of cows. Cows represent the dharma and the "Rig Veda" sings her praises, instructing all to keep her safe. (Learn more in Ahimsa: A Self Practice.) #4 Kamadhenu The bovine goddess, Khamadhenu, also known as Surabhi, is believed to be the mother of all cows. She is abundance incarnate, fulfilling the wishes of her owner, bringing wealth and good fortune. Kamadhenu is also the embodiment of generosity and selflessness. Surabhi is a Sanskrit word that means "the fragrant one"; this is thought to be because of the distinctive sweet smell that cows have. In fact, cow dung is considered pure and is commonly used as fuel and for purification in households across India. #5 Luck Cows are considered to be auspicious and are said to bring blessings and happiness to those who honor them. You will often see cows with garlands of fragrant marigold flowers and fine stone necklaces. On special occasions their faces and bodies are painted in bright colors and their backs draped with richly embroidered blankets. via YouTube https://youtu.be/ibPSmiOh7Ao

Braj ki Holi [Ch-1]
MASTERLIST
Vrindavan Cottage was a nice place to stay for young travellers like us. The entire area housed duplex buildings with two to three rooms, depending on the booking and the number of members. There were two rooms on the ground floor with two double beds, and the third room lay upstairs with a single bed. They even had a small backyard laid with a table to have evening snacks or breakfast. The rooms were neat and well-maintained. Did I mention we had free wi-fi?
It was our second day in Vrindavan. I was wide awake in my room with my alarm ringing with a melodious flute tune from my favourite TV serial, ‘Mahabharat.’ Yeah, I could have slept in till 8 am or 9, but I was in Vrindavan, so I got up early to bask in the soothing early morning of this divine place where tales of mischief and friendship, good over evil, young innocent love and duties are still sung and celebrated in the narrow lanes of this town.
I walked to the backyard and sat on the chair, and closed my eyes. Removing my rubber band, I brushed my hair with the help of my fingers and laid it on the back of my chair. Krishna’s flute composition rang in my ears, and unknowingly, I smiled at the memory. This morning would have been more perfect if he were here to play his melodious music on his flute. It would have been the two of us, the light blue six am sky with clouds lined up in a large mesh-like structure and a gentle morning breeze. Ethereal!
Krishna had texted me yesterday evening asking which hotel were we staying at. His siblings and Arjun were staying at their relative’s house in Vrindavan, which was only an hour's drive from here. My heart skipped a beat when he told me that he was planning to come here soon.
Today was Ekadashi where Phoolan Holi would be celebrated at the Banke Bihari temple in the evening. This event lasted for twenty to thirty minutes, where the temple priests would shower flower petals on the devotees assembled instead of the usual gulaal. The three of us were excited to experience this flowery Holi celebration. The temple was half an hour away from Vrindavan Cottage. Our parents had already hired a driver to take us around Vrindavan.
My cousins were sleeping soundly in their rooms, giving their bodies rest and saving their energy for today’s trip. Before attending Phoolan Holi, we had decided to visit Prem Mandir, Madan Mohan temple, Shri Gopinath Ji temple and Katyayani Peeth. We would start at 9 am after breakfast and visit the temples. Somewhere in the middle, we would have our lunch at a local eatery and then go to Banke Bihari in the evening and come back to our hotel.
After sitting in the backyard for around fifteen minutes, I decided to take a stroll around the cottage premises. It was only seven in the morning, and not a soul was in sight except some cleaners. There was a small temple nearby, and I could hear a few Hare Krishna chants which sounded soothing to my ears. More than the voice of the singers, it was the name that soothed me the most, making me feel fuzzy on the inside. Surely God Krishna would forgive me for remembering my Krishna from the train? Well, God Krishna is cool, so he won’t mind me.
The entire campus was divided by a wide road with cottages on either side. There was a small park too for kids and a pond with lilies. I went to the park and sat on a swing when my phone buzzed in my pocket.
Who is calling me so early in the morning? I wondered.
Fetching my phone from my pocket, I glanced at the screen, which instantly made me smile. It was Krishna! Instantly I smoothened my hair and patted my face before accepting his call.
‘Hi! Sorry to disturb you so early in the morning.” What the hell! How does his voice sound so melodious this early?
Ignoring my questions about his voice, I answered cheerfully, “First of all, a very good morning to you flute player. And no, you did not disturb me because I was already awake half an hour ago.”
He chuckled and paused for five seconds before saying, “Yesterday, all of us were tired, so we did not call you guys up about meeting again. Since you are staying for a week here in Vrindavan and Mathura, and this is my native place, I thought if you all would come with us and celebrate Holi.”
Well, that did sound nice. Wait a minute! Not nice, this was exciting. We wouldn’t need a guide to visit other temples, and with Krishna, we could participate with the locals in the festival. Our parents had asked us to not mingle too much in the crowd in case we got lost or worse abducted, but with Krishna, we could go safely.
“I don’t think my cousins will object to the plan. But how do we go about it?”
Even though I could not see him, I could imagine his million-dollar smile and hear his excitement as he answered, “I have it all sorted. Dau, Subhadra, Arjun and I were planning about this the entire night. Subhadra was so excited that she was about to video call you at 3 am to discuss. Anyway, leave that part, we should focus on the important task. Today is Ekadashi, so you all enjoy the Phoolan Holi. Tomorrow we all will come and pick you up at nine in the morning and go to Gokul for Chhadi Maar Holi. I am sure Ranvit would like it because he missed Barsana and Nandgaon’s Lathmaar Holi. And that’s enough information for the first part of Brajbhoomi’s grand Holi celebration. You all just be ready by nine tomorrow. Also, we asked Subhadra to not disclose anything else to you guys, so no help or hints from her side, too.” He paused again for ten seconds. “And no, we certainly aren’t plotting to murder you all.”
I couldn’t contain my laughter. “Oh, damn! I thought you wanted to kill me and dispose of my body.”
“Now, let us not talk about murder in the morning. But, yeah, we all have planned some fun stuff for you guys. So, see you tomorrow.”
“Yeah, bye-bye!” I cut the call and placed my phone inside my pocket. Smiling to myself, I went inside our cottage to wake my cousins up and tell them about this plan.
Krishna had told me about his childhood in Brajbhoomi. He was born here and spent his early childhood here, after which he had to move to Gujarat. He still maintained contact with some of his childhood friends, and this was the first time he was visiting this place after seven years. He even told me about his childhood best friend, Radha, who lived nearby his house when they were young, and he often annoyed her with his pranks and mischief. He was excited to meet her in person after so many years and was keen to make me meet her too if we got a chance, which I was sure we would.
I hopped my way back to the cottage and pushed Bhumi’s room door open. She never locks her room while sleeping, fearing that she won’t be able to open the door quickly in case a ghost lands inside her room. I poked her shoulder and gently shook her.
She frowned and turned to the other side. “Sssh don’t disturb.”
“I have news from Krishna, sister.” I knew this would wake her
up in an instant.
And she did wake up. She jerked from her sleep and sat up. “Oh my God! Really? What did he say? Are you two-”
I swatted her arm and told her about our trip which Krishna had planned. After hearing the entire conversation, her sleepy face appeared all charged up with energy. “And now you both will get to talk so much. Holi is also quite romantic, isn’t it? You both can put colours on each. Nervous hands touching each other’s face and maybe-’
I closed my ears and ran out while Bhumi sat on the bed, curled up in her bedsheet, laughing, “You may run away from my thoughts but don’t forget to thank me when this turns true.”
“Shut up and get ready, Bhumi!” I yelled and ran to Ranvit’s room to wake him up.
***
We were heading towards Banke Bihari after a heavy lunch at an amazing restaurant. It would still take an hour to reach the temple and Bhumi had dozed off in the car after lunch, leaving me and Ranvit to talk about the other temples we visited during the daytime.
“Which temple did you like the most?” Ranvit asked me, adjusting his shoulder slightly as Bhumi used his shoulder as a pillow.
“Prem Mandir!” I exclaimed. “I was amazed at the construction and the beauty of the temple. It looked like a palace to me, more than a temple.”
Prem Mandir was indeed the most beautiful of all the temples we visited today. It was a new temple, not an ancient one like the others, but the area and the ambience were suffused with love and devotion just like the meaning of the name of the temple. The temple courtyard was a large area for the visitors to smoothly enter and exit or rest for a while. To the right was the temple complex, and on the left were various panels, showing various events and stories about Radha Krishna. The guide told us that evening was the best time to come here when the entire building would appear colourful accompanied by musical fountain shows. But, we had gone there during the day which had less crowd so we were still able to enjoy the beauty of the temple as well as pray to the deities.
“True! The other temples were great, but Prem Mandir was something else. Marble structures look so beautiful,” said Ranvit. “But I like how in the other temples, we saw the murtis, they had this traditional look which we see in folk art. Well, folk art was inspired by traditional imagery of the deities though. But, you see, even though Prem Mandir was exquisite with the panels and construction style and of course, the beautiful murtis but the other ones had this local touch, as if they were of our own. I don’t know how to explain that feeling — something like being closer to them, maybe?”
Ranvit loved Indian folk art and was planning to take a class once he would be done with school. He did take drawing classes and even still continues them, but Indian folk art attracts him the most. In the temples, especially at Madan Mohan and at the Radha Gopinath Mandir, he kept staring at the idol. I agreed with his point, too. And ancient temples have their own magic, timeless and enchanting.
A huge jerk interrupted our conversation and woke Bhumi from her afternoon nap in the car. There was a speed breaker which our driver uncle had missed hence the jerk. “Don’t worry! It’s all good,” he said and continued driving. “The temple is just ten minutes away now.”
“Oh, then I have ten more minutes to sleep.” Bhumi dozed off again, but this time chose my shoulders as her pillow.
Ranvit chuckled and moved his gaze towards the window. “By the way, have you informed maasi we are going with Krishna tomorrow? I haven’t informed mummy yet.”
Shit! I did not. “Should we tell them? What if they tell us no for safety reasons? They would be right, but Krishna and all aren’t fishy people but — let’s not tell our parents so soon. Tomorrow anyway they will call us so we can tell them on our way and lie that we are out with some school friends who coincidentally were at the same hotel with their families. What do you say?”
“Let’s do that only. Thankfully, none of them is on Instagram to check with whom we are going. But, do you know I am very excited about this. This is an opportunity of a lifetime and feels like a Bollywood movie you know.” Ranvit turned his head towards me and tapped on the windowpane. “Meeting new people on a train and them making travel plans with you after spending one night with them. Filmy right?”
I smiled. “Yeah, it is. When we will be old, we can boast in front of our kids that we went on a trip with people we met on a train and had a blast. We would be so cool in front of them.”
“Bacha party aagya Banke Bihari,” announced the driver. Bhumi woke up with a jerk and rubbed her eyes and squinted at the temple. It was 3.45 pm with the afternoon sun entering our windows and falling directly over our faces, especially Bhumi’s.
Bhumi wiped her face with those wet wipes she always carries with her while Ranvit and I stepped out of the car and stretched our arms. Bhumi checked her phone and said, “Ah! I have 70% battery left. I will get so many pictures now.”
Ranvit shook his head, saying, “Oh yes, you are our budding influencer. You have to get photos.”
Bhumi scoffed and walked ahead. “Whatever! You have fifty followers because I click your photos. Now come fast.”
The temple gates were already open to allow devotees to come inside. We even spotted a couple of foreigners with their cameras and tripods. The priests were standing near the idol with large baskets full of flowers. In the corridors leading to the inner veranda, many devotees and priests stood with flowers in their fists. Within five minutes, the main area of the temple had a huge crowd. Each person held their breaths in anticipation to witness the glorious flower Holi event.
The clock struck four, and loud cheers reverberated inside the temple. The priests and the temple staff began showering flowers over us and some volunteers were busy distributing fistfuls of flowers to the devotees.
Bhumi closed her eyes and smiled at the flowers falling over her and quickly grabbed her phone to click photographs. We too got some flowers to play Hol, and after throwing the petals in the air, we slowly moved towards the side where the gathering was less.
Bhumi eagerly showed some of her photographs to Ranvit and me and kept her phone inside. Soon gulaal was thrown in the air and everything appeared colourful. Pink, violet, blue red- these colours dominated our surroundings. I clicked a few photos and videos to share them on my Instagram and with my parents.
“That was splendid!” exclaimed Ranvit. Being a painter, his eyes took in the different shades of flowers and gulaal over the people and the idol. “Damn! I will paint this scene.”
“I wonder what Holi would look like here. This is just Ekadashi and look how beautiful everything appears,” I said.
A girl crossed my field of vision. She was wearing a pastel pink blouse and skirt and a matching dupatta around her neck. The crowd instantly circled her. Children were running around her skirt and throwing flowers at her. Some of the elders blessed her and gently applied a teeka over her forehead with gulaal. She smiled at them and bowed to them with a namaste and walked to the deities and bowed to them. The priests allowed her to apply some gulaal to the Krishna murti.
“Who is that girl?” asked Ranvit. Bhumi’s eyes moved towards her and looked at her curiously. “Maybe some VIP I think,” said Bhumi.
The girl looked around my age. Even though she was dressed very simply, she looked angelic. She had tied her hair in a small bun with a gajra. Silver bangles dangled on her left wrist.
“She is quite pretty though, don’t you think?” Bhumi nudged my elbow and whispered.
I nodded at her and moved my eyes away from her lest she find the three of us staring at her. I barely managed to look at her side profile, but she looked like a sculpture come alive.
After the event, we were served prasadams and some sweets. As we made to the exit, we touched the last step of the temple in reverence and folded our hands when I heard a female voice calling out, “Radhika jaldi aana kitna time lagayegi.”
And the temple beauty graced my eyes. She was Radhika and the female voice I heard was standing a little far from us and I guessed that perhaps the other girl was Radhika’s friend.
Bhumi was the first person to go and approach Radhika, being the extroverted person she was. She tapped on her shoulder, making Radhika turn back granting me full access to look at her face. And I must say, beautiful was an understatement. I didn’t know, but she reminded me of Krishna suddenly at that moment.
“You are really pretty,” said Bhumi, with a smile. I dropped my gaze down and pretended to wear my shoes by fussing with the lace. Even I wanted to tell her that, but I had no heart like Bhumi to go straight and approach her.
“Thank you so much. You are?” Radhika said in a sweet voice, and it again reminded me of Krishna.
“I am Bhumi, a tourist here to experience Holi in Brajbhoomi.”
"Oh, I see. Nice to meet you Bhumi. Hope you have a wonderful stay here and have a wonderful Holi.”
I discreetly tried to look at Radhika again. Do you know what happened next? Her eyes quickly darted towards mine, and she passed me a knowing smile as if she knew me. Since she had already acknowledged my presence, I could no longer stay there and pretend to tie my laces for the hundredth time. I waved at her.
She nodded at me and looked at Bhumi. “I need to go back home. May our paths meet again.” She turned back to the exit. Adjusting her dupatta, she looked back for a second, directly at me. I smiled at her in return as goosebumps rose on my skin.
Why was she reminding me of Krishna so much?

reasons why i love taang because this ship is beautiful and won't leave me in peace:
- their differences: the contrast in the way they were both brought up just fascinates me to no end. like she's basically a billionaire heiress and he's a simple nomad with barely anything to his name. toph is blunt and strong willed. aang is gentle and with his head often in the clouds. this dynamic is so *chef's kiss*.
- their similarities: i will literally never shut up about how both their journeys began with them running away from home or how the aforementioned running was born from a powerful desire to be free from the roles they were born into. they both love to travel. they're both child prodigies who mastered their native elements at outstandingly young ages.
- he was her first friend and the first person she told about her seismic vision using earth bending!!!
- that they both had feelings for a water tribe sibling (i mean who could blame them). i could totally see an alternate universe where they bond over heartbreak and first loves. they then both make a pact to help each get over their crushes and to protect each other from further hurt only to fall for each other instead...
- they challenge each other: nobody gets under aang's skin quite like toph. and like we saw during the dinner scene in the 'blind bandit' he can definitely challenge her right back. he was able to discover an unbendable rocklike aspect of himself thanks to her. he could also help her get in touch with her spirituality through meditation and the like. i just feel like they'd have a lot to teach and learn from each other :')
- i feel like earth and air is such an underrated opposite element pairing. there's something so lovely about this combination especially when you take into consideration that many creation stories (as in the creation of the world) across multiple cultures include an earth mother and sky father. there's just something so epic, so mythic about this combination.
- "best friends to lovers" trope. nuff said.
- "childhood best friends to lovers" trope. like the former but even better. especially in scenarios where aang has to leave for avatar training and they reunite years later and have to reconcile who they remember each other as with who they've become.
- the fact that king bhumi foretold their meeting. bhumi would ship them so hard, dont @ me. and he would affectionately embarrass aang in the process, much to toph's amusement.
- the fact that he saw a vision of her in a mystical swamp where you see visions of people you "loved and lost". and how she turned out to be nothing like the demure, giggly vision he saw in the swamp but was still awestruck by her and her power anyway and was determined to meet her almost like he was inexplicably drawn to her.
- the fact that there is a, very convincing, theory that toph is the reincarnation of avatar kuruk's slain lover, ummi. that that's why toph was born blind because her face was stolen in a past life so not all of her features were reincarnated with her and that their spirits found each other again after nearly 1000 years.
- the beifongs reacting to taang: toph's dad canonically believes that aang kidnapped his daughter. it's hilarious on so many levels. he probably thinks aang is some dangerous, bad boy who's influencing his daughter. which just sends me into space tbh. also lao beifong probably always pictured a wealthy suitor marrying his daughter and contributing to his vast fortune. but the man his daughter loves doesn't have a copper piece to his name. "i mean yes he's the avatar sure but his only possessions are the clothes on his back and a literal stick. a stick, poppy!"
- i think poppy would be cold to aang at first but after seeing how hopelessly in love toph and aang are and how much he genuinely cares about her daughter she'd grow to love and accept him wholeheartedly.
- the thematic and elemental symbolism: i mean technically yes, every ship in atla has this at least to some extent, but i once read a taang fic with the phrase, "she keeps him grounded and he gives her wings" and y'all... i haven't been the same ever since. because like, yes! that's it, that's the ship!
i say all this just to say:
i love them. i love this ship.
thanks for coming to my ted talk.

mod navi plzzzzzz release ur inner rant/ opinion/whatever u wanna call it abt badhai do!!! I loved that movieeeee to every second. As a person whos closeted nd fears to come out just yet that movie really gave me comfort...
-(d-n-j)
today i woke up and i was thinking hey u know what would be good: logging into tumblr and giving my total unsolicited take on badhai do. so, anon, you ask and i shall deliver :3
first of all LAVENDER MARRIAGE!! let's be honest every single one of us living in traditional homes with well-meaning but oblivious parents at some point entertained the idea. I know I did. I still am , and im still in college! The part I liked most was how they handled the theme. Comedic in the right moments and seriously handling sensitive topics in others. Now, I am a person who loves romcoms. LIVES for them in fact. That was why i absolutely lost my shit when SMZS released. Both movies actually do a really good job of keeping their comedic bits to topics we as desi queers can relate to. Somehow, it's not stepping over anyone for laughs, nor is it disrespecting our community for the sake of clout.
I still remember mainstream bollywood dipping their toes into lgbtq movies with Kapoor & Sons and Laxmi (I'm talking lgbtq movies where they are the main point of interest), which were handled honest to God TERRIBLY. I won't spoil it for you guys, but let me say the only thing they did a "great job" at was villianizing us right of the bat. Getting rep like that is like...hey might as well not get any rep at all, you know? Which was why this new surge of lgbtq movies with PROPER and SENSITIVE representation, whether well-meant or not (i mean it's bollywood, come on), is still something to celebrate.
LET'S TALK THE ACTORS! Casting is essential to any movie; and what's more important, especially in bollywood, is reputation. There have been many, and i mean MANY, cases where actors (ESPECIALLY rising actors with zero clout and nepotistic ties) will not take the job despite the high pay, simply because the thematic elements of the movie are too controversial. However, we see time and time again these actors taking on the challenge and controversy, so of course they have to be appreciated.
I'm sure you guys caught on at this point but the faces of our representation in present bollywood media boil down to three mains: Ayushman Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar, and Rajkumar Rao. Rao was in Ek Ladki Ko and Bhumi was in SMZS in the first scene! Ayushman Khurrana has always been known to take on comedic and untraditional roles. I became attracted to his acting after watching Dum Laga Ke Haisha (co-starring Bhumi ;) ), which handled double standards and fatphobia quite well imo. He was also amazing in another movie called Badhaai Ho (ik quite on the nose there) that discussed pregnancy in elder women. This guy has got some SERIOUS good acting skills, and I mean it, but he also willingly takes on untraditional roles (effimenate, bald, sex worker, etc) AND PORTRAYS THEM PROPERLY. Also fell in love with Bhumi in Dum Laga ke Haisha, and she does amazing in roles ranging from "the scorned woman" to "best friend to a queer couple and being absolutely supportive" to, you guessed it, "south asian lesbian rep in an interracial relationship". Rajkumar Rao is a surprising addition to this list because his first movies had him as the "traditional main lead falling for pretty women". Quite a shift to "gay man in a lavender marriage". Ek Ladki Ko was him dipping his toes into queer media, so watching him dive head first into such a risky endeavor left me in awe. All in all, the best part about him is his constant growth. He has always been a good actor, but watching his transformation into a great one is absolutely phenomenal.
I do not know if any of these actors are actually part of the lgbtq community themselves, and I will not speculate. The mere fact that they are willing to put themselves in the line of fire in a country and community still coming to terms with it's history and identity is something i will always be deeply and profoundly grateful for.
You and I, anon, are two birds of feather. I am closeted too, and most likely will be for the rest of my life. But it's these movies and actors that give us a chance to open up a conversation. Just the other day my mother watched SMZS, ALONE AND WITHOUT ME KNOWING (I gatekept the movie like crazy from her). She ended up hating it, which is understandable she is, after all, a deeply religious Muslim woman, but she still sat and watched the whole thing simply because we both love Ayushman Khurrana. I know she will find Badhaai Do and sit through it because we both love Bhumi as well. It's these moments, anon, that I reflect on and appreciate the most. On Badhaai Do
I loved it. I loved #BadhaaiDo . I've seen the criticisms, and it went and shit on most of it.
I've seen the criticisms, and it went and shit on most of it.
Firstly, the premise is based off the problems in lavender marriages.
Second, it does not play our trauma for laughter. @bhumipednekar and @rajkummar_rao actually do a brilliant job of getting it across. I remember this one scene were Rajkumar's characters is crying and you can see snot on his mustache. He hugs someone, and we see it on the other person. And that's amazing so-in-the-role acting right there.
Third, I do not necessarily want queer people in queer roles. In Indian cinema, this is a challenge because many queer people fear being typecasted into these roles only.
I want queer screenwriters and directors because actors are not the ones makinh the decisions. Here, a queer person was consulted for the script and it shows. No straight person could've portrayed us with this authenticity (link in the last story)
Fourth, the lack of research and the straight pride flag- research to me does not mean being perfectly politically correct. Idgaf if actors praising the pope for this one comment. I don't care if they did show the straight pride flag.
The difference is that it doesn't lead to any real harm to queer lives. It's a small, barely visible thing and those who know about it know it's problematic. But no one from the theater will Google what the small thing at the corner was.
We also need to understand that actors are not on a leash by studios. I don't know enough about the actors to love them but i know they're not hugely problematic.
We can't cancel the movie because they said something off, we can't police everything the actors do.
I do wish that joke on "what's your gender" "what do you think" wasn't made and there's no defense to it. Apart from that, my qualm is that the romance did fall flat sometimes.
But I loved this movie because it showed me and it was so brilliantly done and beautiful with morally gray characters who we can see growing- the quality content i did not expect while going in for some preachy clichè
So, I implore you. Do not write off this movie in your mind, don't cancel it. It's something that will have a direct impact on the community and is advocating for real change. There's one indefensible scene, which deserves all the criticism it gets.
But the beautiful way in which this movie is done, i can't imagine those behind it not listening.
It's worth giving a chance
I understand the hesitancy in accepting this- it is marketed a certain way, like a dumb surface level comedy. That'll bring people to theater though bec capitalism is shit, can't fault them for this.
The trailer and promotional content does not do justice to this amazing work of art.
• LESBIANS BEING BADASS SHITS BUT ALSO A COMPLETE DISASTER AHHH THE AUTHINTICITY
• The POSTERS. It's so indian and cheeky and gayyyy <3
• making fun of discrimination <3
• well developed charachters heh3
• A PRIDE SONG !!!
• The cheeky way they played with us at the very end wtf 😭 i was scared OKAY
• just- realism. Not showing queer people as woke asf (bec thats just how it is in India)
• Queer people having relationships that don't work out. I've seen the 'just know youre the one' thing so often, this was refreshing.
• I'm a sucker for angst with comfort y'all. And Bhumi's ex's story, her talking about it 😭 Rijhima should've held her throughout and its a scam she didn't
• SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVLYN HUGO PARALLELS ARGHHH the cafe scene? The very end, calling the lawyer dude to sit? The parent's dynamic?
• the realistic thing of some people will not accept you, and for some it'll take a lot of time.
Anyway this is all i can remember for now but yaar pls give this a chance ok

London Confidential Movie Review
London Confidential Movie Review - The film is based on the bestselling book of the same name, which also contains a film version. The novel follows a young woman as she goes from work to work and from job to job, all of which seem to involve an investigation into a series of murders. The investigation leads her to a man she meets at the office and then to an even larger group of people who may be hiding something.
The central character is a woman, but that woman is never named. Instead, we are told she's a "porn addict" and that she "sucks cock". It's an odd thing for a film to show this, and the film doesn't actually need to do it, but it does. It's one of the main things the viewer gets to see, and it works because it makes the film believable and real.
This isn't like a mystery that we are presented with an explanation or an answer at the end. This isn't a story that give the viewers a reason to care about a certain character, and the film doesn't have them doing anything either.
That being said, London Confidential does have a couple of really good twists that make the film worth watching, and helps to flesh out some of the characters in the story. There are also a number of other things that happen throughout the story that really help to add layers to it, and add some much-needed drama to what would otherwise be a fairly bland murder mystery.
Overall, London Confidential is a well-written, well-acted movie that have a number of good elements, but that doesn't live up to the standards of many crime dramas out there. The film does have some very strong elements, and the story is entertaining, but the overall story is lacking in some areas.
I won't spoil the movie in this movie review, but you will find out a bit about the characters and their actions and thoughts throughout the course of the movie. It should help you better understand the events that take place, and the people you spend time with throughout.
There is nothing wrong with mystery and suspense as a way of building excitement and mystery for a reader, but sometimes you have to let the mystery come from something else. This is especially true in this type of book. As I stated before, the central character is someone we only get to know through the use of a few lines, and through a handful of scenes. So the only clues that you get are the ones we use from the main character.
It's a well-written mystery, but it's not a well-written mystery where the reader can feel a sense of mystery because he or she is doing the mystery. The movie version is closer to that, but it's not quite as effective.
The movie London Confidential is the sort of mystery that works for a short time before giving way to more action and drama. In a way, the movie version is like a short movie version of a book. In fact, some people compare the novel to the Twilight books, which have similar characters and a similar sort of story.
The main problem with movies like these is that the writers don't write the story in the way that mystery is supposed to be written. The story is supposed to be suspenseful and build up the characters and the mystery, then it eventually reveals the answer by the end of the movie.
Instead of a mystery that builds, the movie version of London Confidential gives us a big reveal and then a big cliffhanger. That is what makes the movie version so disappointing.
The movie version of the book is worth seeing if you are interested in reading about the characters and the story, and if you are interested in how the story was told in the film, but it just isn't one that will hold your interest. If you only have a few minutes to spare, I'd recommend you look for something else, but if you have a chance, I would recommend that you go out and read the book and see if you can figure out what the book is all about.

Most people do not like to read reviews. However, if you do not want to read reviews then you can easily look it up online. The reviews are available for free of cost and this means that you do not have to pay for them at any time.
There are a number of things that you need to keep in mind while looking up the review. One of the things that you need to keep in mind is that there are more than one website that will give you a review. Some websites are better than the others and this is because they use different techniques in their review to make it appear more credible.
For example, you can read the review of the movie in the morning and in the evening you will see another website which will review the same movie. This is because the first website uses techniques like search engine optimization while the other does not have any such methods in their reviews.
Also, look out for a movie review that contains the complete information about the movie. This means that you need to check out all the information that they provide. This is because you do not want to miss out anything important in a review.
If you are not interested in watching movies, but simply want to read about some of the movies that have been made recently then this is the website that you should be checking out. The reviews contain a lot of information and this includes the film description, plot lines, cast, director and star power of the movie as well as much as the trailer that has been released along with its rating.

London confidential zee5 is a unique marketing campaign designed and run by Bumble Bee Marketing. It is aimed at getting the top search engine rankings by using the right keywords in your site content.
There are many people online who are looking for an answer to questions such as: "Why is it so difficult to find a company that will do all the work for me, especially if I don't have any experience?". And then there is the growing problem of dealing with too many different online businesses which will require you to search for solutions yourself, which can be time consuming.
What makes London confidential zeew5 different from other similar campaigns is its highly targeted keyword lists. Its target markets are those who use Google, Yahoo, Bing and MSN to search for goods and services.
So what type of content will you see on your London confidential zeew5 website? Well, this will be very much similar to your standard article marketing campaign. You will write a high quality article about your product or service and submit it to article directories such as EzineArticles.
Once you have submitted your content, you can expect your content to appear on the top search results pages for a particular product within a matter of weeks, not days. If the content of your article is highly ranked, you will receive lots of targeted visitors from the search engines, some of whom will make purchases.
Although having good content is always a good thing, there is no such thing as being the "perfect" article marketer. You have to have a strong knowledge of how to create and structure good articles to get them ranked high in the search engines.
The one thing that has really impressed me about London is that they provide their clients with the right tools to get the best results possible. Their software allows you to generate content that will show high search engine rankings by using the right keywords in your content.
So whether you want to start off with this campaign on a limited budget or just do it on a permanent basis, London confidential zeew5 should be an option for you. If you want to be the next successful entrepreneur to join the growing number of marketers in London, this may be the perfect opportunity for you.
Internet marketers should take note, however, that it does take work to succeed on this platform. With a large number of products to choose from, finding a product to sell is an endless process. You may even find yourself overwhelmed by all the available products and services available. That is why you will need to learn to use different techniques to build a solid website that can attract customers and convince them to make a purchase.
One way to do this is by offering valuable information in your articles. You should always provide useful information that will help readers understand the product that you are trying to sell, but also offer tips and tricks that will allow them to maximize their use of the product and save time and money. You should also offer helpful information that shows them the best ways to utilize the products.
This can make all the difference in the world when trying to obtain a competitive edge over your competition. Internet marketers should also avoid using too many promotional strategies, since this will only draw unnecessary attention to your website.
For example, if you sell an anti aging skin care treatment, you should avoid using the phrase "Buy Now"Buy Online" so that your website doesn't seem like a sales page. Use language that encourages readers to contact you via email or phone.
Using a personalized message or personal touch on your website will increase your credibility with the people who visit your site. Also, you should never spam the search engines, as this will not only result in your website not being seen, but may cause your site to be banned from the search engines entirely.
The key to having a successful website that attracts people is to have an attractive design that provides users with a personal touch. So in conclusion, if you're looking for an easy way to promote your website, make sure you check out London Confidential's free tools and website building services.

10 Bollywood Slice-Of-Life Movies Worth Watching
There are many movies in Bollywood that introduce us to a new world full of wonder and imagination (such as Mahishmati of Bahubali) and on the other hand, there are movies rooted in the real world with vibrant characters. Often called ‘slice-of-life’ films, these movies humor us but most importantly teach us about what life is and what we can gain from it. So here are 10 slice-of-life films worth watching (and since I couldn’t fit all of my favorites, I MAY do a sequel to this post).
1. ENGLISH VINGLISH (DIR. GAURI SHINDE)
This classic 2012 movie is about an Indian housewife who knows little to no English and her going to New York to attend her niece’s wedding and secretly taking English classes with a class of diverse and vibrant people. This movie is heartwarming and the main reason it was so successful was that it resonated with everyone around the world regardless of which native language they speak. Sridevi’s comeback was a definite success as she shined brightly just like she used to in her older films.
2. VICKY DONOR (DIR. SHOOJIT SIRCAR)
This award-winning film is about Vicky, a man with high-quality sperm, and how he faces turmoils in his life because of the fact that he is a sperm donor. Traditionally a taboo topic, this movie broke the barriers and explained how being a donor makes other families happier and more secure. Having great veterans like Annu Kapoor and Dolly Ahluwalia aiding them, the two main leads were fresh-eyed Yami Gautam and Ayushmann Khurrana and they proved their acting chops marvelously.
3. THE LUNCHBOX (DIR. RITESH BATRA)
This low-budget-hit is about a flourishing relationship between a married woman and an aching widower without meeting eye to eye but through writing each other letters with a lunchbox through the dabbawala system, which in short is a lunch delivery system. This touching movie has won 3 Filmfare awards and deservedly so. The story is unique, the romance and insecurities are real and organic, and the characters are so vivid and relatable that you remember them forever. What’s there to not love about it?
4. DIL CHAHTA HAI (DIR. FARHAN AKHTAR)
Marking the debut of Farhan Akhtar as a capable and talented director, this movie is about three friends, navigating their love lives which collide with their friendship. The first blockbuster of it’s kind, this movie has great performances from the three leads and it’s a great throwback to the early-2000′s. Exploring topics like age-gap relationships, this movie explores human nature and growth (especially through Akash) and gives some of the most memorable moments in movie history.
5. DEAR ZINDAGI (DIR. GAURI SHINDE)
Dear Zindagi is about Kaira, a woman with a problematic relationships back to back, sorting out her life with the help of Dr. Jehangir, an eccentric psychologist. The natural back-and-forth’s between the two leads is interesting and effortlessly carried out and the organic and raw emotions of Kaira in sequences like the get-together party scene or ‘Just Go To Hell Dil’ song is performed nicely by the capable Alia Bhatt. Giving young lost souls an output, this movie is definitely worth your time.
6. YEH JAWANI HAI DEEWANI (DIR. AYAN MUKERJI)
One of my all-time favorite movies, this is about a group of college friends reuniting at one of their weddings and discovering how much their lives have changed after their careless days. This movie just has way too many beautiful moments and dialogues to rave about in a single paragraph. The performances, music, dialogues, themes, cinematography, characters, each and every aspect of the film combined forms an eye-opening cinematic experience I can never forget.
7. ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA (DIR. ZOYA AKHTAR)
Another one of my all-time favorites, this movie is about three friends going on a bachelor trip through Spain having many adrenaline-filled experiences while uncovering some unspoken secrets between them. Like YJHD, ZNMD is beautiful in every shape and form. From the performances to the cinematography, to Imraan’s poems. The movie is all about growth and how we should listen to our hearts more. I have watched this movie 53 times now and every single minute of it was worthwhile.
8. DIL DHADAKNE DO (DIR. ZOYA AKHTAR)
Another Zoya Akhtar venture, this movie is about a successful but bumpy couple going on a cruise to celebrate their wedding anniversary with their savvy daughter and their spirited son. This movie shows human problems rather than rich problems. Children not being able to live their dreams or be with who they want to be with because of their parents, women marrying against their own will, and miscommunication between picture-perfect couples. This accompanied by some lively tunes and stunning cinematography makes for a great film overall.
9. PIKU (DIR. SHOOJIT SIRCAR)
This movie follows a Delhi-based architect, Piku, going on a road trip with her father to Kolkata. Although the plotline is super simple, the entire movie is uplifting and shows the beauty of simplicity and relationships. Dwelling on the characters and story rather than a commercial movie with a big-budget, Piku won 5 Filmfare awards and 2 IIFAs. And if that wasn’t impressive enough already, it won 2 National Film Awards in the ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Screenplay’ categories. Watch this sweet masterpiece to feel the emotions yourself.
10. DUM LAGAA KE HAISHA (DIR. SHARAT KATARIYA)
The first Khuranna-Pednekar movie revolves around a mismatched couple arranged to marry each other trying to win the annual wife-carrying competition. Marking the debut of Bhumi Pednekar as a talented individual, this movie fought the stereotype of the ‘slim leading lady’ with a genuine and heartfelt romance blossoming between the pair. Definitely one of it’s kind, DLKH has a great supporting cast, songs with a nostalgic feel, and Ayushmann delivered his best just like he always does with his movies.

For the @teambaahubali Summertime Challenge:
Fortnight Two: Meta: Bhumi
Scene: Bhallaladeva with the Maahishmati crown.
For some odd reason, (Rana Daggubati at his evil best) this scene, amongst many other scenes in the franchise, stayed with me for a long, long time after I watched the movie for the first time. Now, since we have a chance of splitting hairs of the scenes that stayed with us the most, so, here goes:
One of the most repetitive lines that all of us have put a lot of emphasis on, is the grandeur of both the Baahubali movies, (for me, personally, the second one made a better impact than the first). Every single frame in the film is a spectacle, however subtle, and hence each one of them deserves a meta of its own, when it comes to cinematography. However, I’m derailing, so yeah, this is my version of hair-splitting of this particular scene.
What we see here is an exasperated Bhallaladeva venting himself out in front of the Maahishmati crown, which is an object, he has so dearly coveted all his life. And yet, now that it is within his tangible reach, it still stays far away from him in spirit.
Cinematographer K.K.Senthil Kumar, works his mojo excellently here, as he concentrates his camera on two focal points: The Antagonist, (though he would have done well to not torment us with Rana’s glossy, perfectly-crafted-Adonis-like-chest) and the object of his obsession (because, Bhalla’s desire for the crown is more of an obsession than an actual desire) . Between these as well, we see a magnified focus on the crown, in furtherance to the storyline, because, well... how else, would you show a megalomaniac other than in conjunction with his reason for seeking power.
The camera first focusses on the crown, as it brings Rana’s face into a blurry focus. A noteworthy point here: Throughout the scene, wherever the camera focusses on the actor, it makes a special note of his eyes, while shifting between the crown and Bhallaladeva.
Point 2: The colour scheme of the scene: Colouring is always a crucial point in films and scenes like these. Overdone, it makes it too gaudy for the viewer to watch, underdone, and the whole scene becomes bland. Set designers here, have emphasised on two main colours, red, and gold. While the red focusses on royalty, powerplay, and of course, also stands as an allusion to the bloodshed that is to follow, the gold further accentuates the royalty aspect of the scene.
The lighting isn’t very bright, or gaudy either. Set designer Sabu Cyril, keeps it subtle, yet ferocious, here again, the red plays a pivotal part in subduing the brightness brought about by the golden hues, thus keeping the ambience perfect for a bone-chilling premise.
Point 3: The camera angles: K.K. Senthil Kumar scores yet another brownie point for the perfect assemblage, and timing of the camera angles in this scene. He literally takes the cake, when he focuses the camera solely on Bhallaladeva’s hand on the spikes of the crown (which in itself, supposedly finds its inspiration from the Iron Throne in Game of Thrones, considering the semblance), and the blood running down.
It is here that he makes a point, that more blood shall follow in the pursuit of the Maahishmati crown, Which does, of course, in time.

Namaste! How else should I begin this post!
The greeting is the first thing that you learn about a place. It is the first thing that you get to hear in your flight, at the airport, in the taxi and of course at the travel destinations. Greeting from your homeland is also something you carry with you.
Namaste is the most commonly used greeting in India. Very often, when people realize you are an Indian, they fold hands and greet you with a Namaste.
However, when nothing in India is universal, how can our greetings be. Here is a list of some of the commonly used greetings across India.
Thanks to my Twitter and FB timeline for adding to this list. I knew most of them, but some of them like Dhaal Karu from Himachal was a revelation for me.
Researching for this post was absolute fun.
1. Namaste & its Variants
Namaste means ‘I bow to the divine in you’. Ask any Hippie and they would even say ‘The divine in me bows to the divine in you’.
The term has many variants – Namaskar, which is ideally used when you address more than one person.
In Kerala it becomes Namaskaram, in Karnataka it goes as Namaskara and in Andhra states Namaskaramu.
Nepal also uses the same term or Namaskar to greet.
They all mean the same – acknowledging the divine or good in you before any conversation or transaction begins.
2. Ram Ram & its variants
After the more popular Namaste greeting, Ram Ram and its various variants are used in most of the Hindi speaking belt to greet each other. In Awadh and Mithila you hear Sita Ram, Sita Ram. At areas of Bihar and Jharkhand, it becomes Jai Siya Ram. In Haryana, it is usually Ram Ram.
The idea behind this greeting to remember Sri Ram who is the 7th Avatar of Vishnu. Considered Maryada Purushottam, it is probably a way to remind each other and oneself to follow his conduct.
3. Jai Sri Krishna in Gujarat
If you have traveled in Gujarat, interacted with Gujarati families or even watched Gujarati content on TV, you know they all greet each other with ‘Jai Sri Krishna‘.
Krishna chose to make Dwarka his golden city, he ruled the world from here and continues to rule the hearts of the people of Gujarat.
In Dwarka, the greeting becomes more specific to – Jai Dwarkadhish.
4. Radhe Radhe in Braj Bhumi
In Braj, Radha rules. She is the queen and she is the Gopika. To reach Krishna too, you have to go through her. You don’t need to read or know anything about her. Just land anywhere in Braj and ‘Radhe Radhe‘ is not just a greeting but it means excuse me, leave my way, an exclamation and anything that does not need other words.
Jai Sri Radhe is a variant that you hear in temples of Braj sometimes.
5. Sat Sri Akaal in Punjab
A common greeting among Sikhs and Punjabis is Sat Sri Akaal. Sat means Truth, Sri is a respectful honorific and Akaal means timeless. So, you are essentially remembering the Timeless Truth or that Truth is Timeless and resides within all of us.
Sat Sri Akaal is a part of the clarion call given by Guru Gobind Singh – Jo Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akaal.
Another longer greeting is ‘Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji ki Fateh‘ – it is a reminder that all of us come from that one supreme being which is pure and at the end that is what remains.
6. Vanakkam – Tamil Nadu
Vanakkam is used by Tamil people living anywhere in the world. Essentially it means the same as Namaste. It is bowing down to or respecting the divine inside you. It comes from the root word – Vanagu meaning to bow down. Some literature mentions that Vanakkam specifically refers to the divine at the third eye located between your brows.
7. Khamma Ghani – Rajasthan
I first heard Khamma Ghani in some Hindi films based in Rajasthan. Next, I heard it during my visit to Udaipur. In my mind, it got associated with Rajasthan, but no one could explain what it meant. Now, I have two theories for this:
First is simple – Khamma comes from Sanskrit Kshama meaning forgiveness. Ghani means ‘a lot’. So, the greeting Khamma Ghani simply means – seeking forgiveness for any inadvertent hurt that may have been done or any lapses in hospitality.
The second source one is more historical – in 8th CE AD, 3 successive Mewari Kings, sharing the common name Khumaan, averted many attacks by Arabs. Due to this, the people in their kingdom lived happily for the next 1000 years or so. So, people started greeting each other ‘Khamma Ghani’ meaning ‘May we be blessed with many Khumaans’.
Take your pick for the meaning but when people say it with folded hands – it is a sweet greeting to exchange.
When used with elders Sa is added at the end – Khamma Ghani Sa.
8. Jule – Ladakh
When you travel through the Lahaul Spiti Valley in Himachal or do road trips in Ladakh, you are bound to be greeted with ‘Jule’, pronounced as Joo-Lay. It is a greeting mostly used by Buddhist dominated areas of the Himalayan valleys. It probably means ‘Respect’. I am not sure what it means and what is the root word. If you know, please share.
Just like Radhe Radhe, Jule too can mean thank you, please, excuse me or just Hello.
Tashi Delek is also used in some places.
9. Jai Jinendra – Jains across India
Jai Jinendra is used by all Jains to greet each other. We do not hear it very much as the Jains are a very small minority even within India and they usually use it among themselves only.
Jai Jinendra means victory to Jinendra or the Tirthankar, the souls who have won over their all their senses and have realized the ultimate knowledge.
This greeting directly bows downs to those who have real knowledge.
10. Swami Sharanam by followers of Ayyappa
Swami Sharanam or Swami Sharnam Ayyappa is actually a chant that is also used as a greeting by followers of Ayyappa when they meet each other. They start and end the conversation with this chant. Ayyappa followers are found in Kerala and all other south Indian states.
11. Aadab – Muslims primarily
Aadab is used to greet by followers of Islam and in places where Urdu is spoken. Could not find the meaning or intent of the word. If you know, please share.
12. Dhaal Karu in Himachal
This is another greeting from Himachal, though I will be honest, I am yet to hear it. However, my Himachali friends confirm this is used in Kullu Manali region of the state. The meaning is most probably similar to Namaste.
13. Narmade Har – On banks of Narmada
When you walk with the Narmada, the most common greeting you would hear is ‘Narmade Har’ – may the Narmada take away all your sorrows and sufferings.
Har Har Gange is also heard at places like Rishikesh, Prayagraj, and Varanasi, but not so consistently.
14. Jai Jai – Bikaner
During a trip to Bikaner, I heard the hotel greet us with ‘Jai Jai’. When I inquired, they said, this is how Bikaner greets people. I have not heard it outside the hotel, but it sounds very sweet, royal and full of Veer Rasa or emotion of bravery.
15. Pranam – for the elders
This is an India wide greeting used by the younger people to greet the elders. More often than not, it is complemented by touching the feet.
16. Region-based Greetings
Jai Bhole Nath – Varanasi. The city of Shiva has to have a greeting with his name
Jai Jagannath in Puri and around Odisha
and more
Jai Shri Mahakal in Ujjain
Jai Sri Radhe Govind in Jaipur
17. Hello
Hello is not really an Indian greeting but probably the most used, especially on phone and in urban areas. Before writing this post I had no idea about the origins of the word ‘Hello’, although we used it so many times every day. Apparently, it is not a greeting per se but a way of drawing attention. Another contender for this is Ahoy.
Read this shockingly Short History of Hello.
Hi, it seems is the shortened version of Hello.
18. Good Morning
Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening or Good Night is the neutral or should I say secular ways to greet anyone. I think I picked it up in school and continued using it till my corporate life. The Good Morning though got reduced to just Morning 🙂
19. Jai Jhulelal
Jai Jhulelal is used by the Sindhi community. Jhulelal is supposed to be the incarnation of Varun, the lord of the seas.
20. Jai Mata Di
It is used by the followers of the Devi or the divine feminine. Mata here refers to Jagadamba or the mother who is the creator, sustainer, and destroyer of everything that exists in this universe.
21. Ayubowan in Sri Lanka
Ayubowan in Sri Lanka comes from Sanskrit – Ayushman Bhava which means ‘May you have a long life’.
22. Sawasdee in Thailand
Sawasdee, the ubiquitous greeting of Thailand, also said with folded hands from Swasti which means wishing well.
All the greetings that have an origin in India or Sanskrit are said with folded hands formally, although informally sometimes you just say them.
Have I missed any Indian greeting? Tell us in the comments below.

An Introductory Teaching on Taking Refuge (2 of 2)
by His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin
The very first step in practising the Dharma is to take refuge. There are five aspects to taking refuge: the cause of taking refuge, the object of refuge, the way to take refuge, the benefits of taking refuge and, lastly, the rules of taking refuge.
The first aspect, the cause of taking refuge, we have already discussed in the previous issue.
So now, we will look at the second aspect, the object of refuge. The object of refuge is the same for all Buddhists, whether they belong to Hinayana, Mahayana or Vajrayana. All Buddhists take refuge in the Triple Gem. But on closer examination, there is a difference. According to Mahayana, and also to Vajrayana, when we say Buddha, we refer to someone who is totally awakened, someone who has become free from all forms of obscurations - the obscuration of defilements and the obscuration of knowledge, including their propensities. Someone who has attained the highest qualities, and who possesses the three kayas.
Of the three kayas, or bodies, the most important one is the Dharmakaya. Dharmakaya means the ultimate truth, or the true nature of all phenomena – it is similar to the Dharmadatu, or ultimate reality, which is totally free of all obscurations. It is also called double purity. Double purity means not only the basic purity that everyone possesses, but also purity in the sense that all temporal obscurations are also totally eliminated. And such a state is realised through awareness, or through primordial wisdom. Such a state, the primordial wisdom that realises ultimate truth, which possesses double purity, is the Dharmakaya. So that is the most important body. And because They have attained this, the Buddhas have gained all the qualities and have eliminated all forms of obscurations. And so, in order to help sentient beings, and while ceaselessly remaining in this state of Dharmakaya, They appear in a form - but the Dharmakaya is actually formless, it has no form, it is beyond description, it cannot be comprehended by our relative minds.
In order to help sentient beings, the Buddhas, while remaining in such a state, take on a form that is helpful to the pure disciples, the higher followers. For the benefit of the higher followers, the Buddhas appear in the Sambhogakaya form. Sambhogakaya means the body of enjoyment. The Sambhogakaya is said to have the five certainties: the certainty of place, the certainty of time, the certainty of form, the certainty of teachings, and the certainty of surroundings. Here, the surroundings refer to the followers. The place is not anywhere, but always in the highest Buddha Akanishta, the Buddha Field that is known as Akanishta. Here, there is no time, there is no such thing as birth or death, but it is there all the time, constantly remaining in the form of the Buddha. It does not appear in different forms, but always in the Buddha’s form, the fully enlightened Buddha’s form, adorned with the thirty-two signs and eighty qualities. And it does not impart different teachings, but always the highest Mahayana teachings. And the disciples are not ordinary persons but Bodhisattvas, the highest Bodhisattvas, Bodhisattvas who are already on the stage of the ten bhumis. In other words, the Bodhisattvas who have already gone beyond the worldly path. So it is that the Sambhogakaya has the five certainties.
And then, in order to help ordinary sentient beings, the Buddhas appear in Nirmanakaya form. This is different from the Sambhogakaya, in the sense that when there are worthy followers, the Nirmanakaya appear. When there are no worthy followers, they do not appear, but enter into Paranirvana. The form is not necessarily in the Buddha's form, in that whenever, wherever, and whatever form is required, the form will appear that is most beneficial to that particular situation, to that particular circumstance. The Buddhas will appear in that particular form to help sentient beings. So the historical Sakyamuni Buddha is also actually a Nirmanakaya. But He's known as an excellent Nirmanakaya because even ordinary persons saw Him as a Buddha with the thirty-two signs and the eighty qualities and so forth.
So the Buddha is the first object of refuge. The second object is the Dharma. ‘Dharma’ is a Sanskrit word and it has many different meanings but here, we are referring to the Holy Dharma. The Dharma has two aspects. One relates to the teachings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who have attained a high realisation, wherein They describe and explain to disciples the meaning of this realisation. This is the Dharma of teachings.
The teachings are one Dharma, but they are divided into different categories, for example according to subject or time, but normally they are presented as the Tripitaka. Tripitaka means 'Three Containers'. The purpose of teaching the Dharma is to subdue, to tame the defilements. And so, in order to subdue desire, the Buddha taught the Vinaya, the first Container, which explains all aspects of moral conduct, for instance, the lay and monastic vows.
Then, the second Container is called the Sutra. The Buddha taught the Sutra, which explains all the meditations and the different levels of meditations, in order to subdue hatred.
Then, to subdue ignorance, the Buddha taught the third Container, the Abhidharma, which explains wisdom, or ultimate truth.
So this is one aspect of the Dharma, the aspect of the teachings of the Buddha. In fact, the real Dharma is contained in the realisations that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have attained, and in the fact that They have permanently eliminated all obscurations. This is the Truth of Cessation.
The real Dharma is also the Path that leads to the Truth of Cessation. The path that leads to uncontaminated primordial wisdom, that becomes a direct antidote to the obscurations, is the Truth of Path. The Truth of Cessation and the Truth of Path, the last two of the Four Noble Truths, are another aspect of the Dharma. They are the true Dharma.
The Tripitaka is just a teaching that is given, while the real Dharma is the genuine Truth that is realised by the Buddhas and the Bodhisattvas. This is what we take refuge in, so the second object of refuge is Dharma.
And then the third object of refuge is the Sangha. The word 'Sangha' actually means 'Community'. So the Sangha means anybody, from the highest Bodhisattva down to the ordinary person, anybody who has entered the Buddhist path. But the true Sangha are the Bodhisattvas who have already gone beyond the worldly path, and who have already reached the irreversible state, who are sure to advance on the path to Buddhahood. These are the true Sangha. So these are the three objects of refuge: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.
And now the third aspect is the way we take refuge. The way we take refuge is by taking the Buddha as our guide. Even in ordinary life, if we’re embarking on a new enterprise, we need someone to guide us through. In the same way, we take refuge in the Buddha as guide and teacher on our path. But although the Buddha has great power, it is not by using His power alone that He can save sentient beings. If we constantly commit negative deeds, whatever blessings we receive from the Buddha can just bring us temporary solace. This has nothing to do with the Buddha’s teachings. Rather, in order to help beings, the Buddha shows us what is right and what is wrong, He teaches us how to remain on the right path. The Buddha said: “I have shown you the path to liberation”. Whether or not we follow this path is up to us.
We also take refuge in the Dharma. Refuge in the Dharma is our actual path, the real saviour. For example, when we are ill, it is important to have a good doctor, but we must also make an effort to follow his instructions, to take the medicine that he has given us, and to avoid conditions that will inhibit our recovery. Similarly, the Buddha is like a doctor, and the Dharma is like the medicine. And, as we must take medicine, we must practice the Dharma in order to recover from our samsaric state. We talk about the “Wheel of Dharma”. As the wheel of Dharma turns, the Buddha’s teachings and His wisdom are transferred to the disciple. It is then up to the disciple to put these teachings into practice, and this way progress along the path. Every time the wheel of Dharma turns, we receive new teachings, we put them into practice, and we progress further along the path.
And we take refuge in the Sangha, our companions along the path. For example, if we are undertaking a long and arduous journey, it is important to have worthy companions. Whatever our endeavour, it is always helpful to be accompanied by like-minded persons who share our goals and aspirations. In the same manner, when we embark on the path of Dharma, it is very beneficial to depend on fellow practitioners, so we take refuge in the Sangha. This is the way we take refuge.
As I mentioned earlier, we normally explain the refuge according to five aspects. The first one is the cause of refuge, which is fear, faith and compassion. The second is the object of refuge, which is Buddha, Dharma, Sangha. And the third is the way we take refuge, how we take Buddha as our guide, Dharma as our actual path, and Sangha as our companions.
Now the fourth aspect is the benefit of taking refuge. The benefit of taking refuge is said to be enormous. Even by merely hearing the refuge, even by merely hearing the name of the Buddha, we can gain an enormous amount of benefit. So if, with very sincere devotion and faith, we take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, the merit that we earn is immeasurable. If it had a physical form, even the whole of space would be too small to accommodate such a huge amount of merit. And then also, by taking refuge, we change from the ordinary path to the Dharma path, from the wrong path to the right path. And also we change from being a non-Buddhist to a Buddhist. By taking refuge, we become real Buddhists, not just in name but from our very core, and the Dharma protectors look after us.
The fifth aspect is the rules of the refuge. For example, if we take refuge in another country, then we must abide by the rules and regulations of that country. If we do not keep the rules and regulations of the country that is giving us shelter, then of course we get into trouble. So similarly, after taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, we also have to observe the rules of this refuge. There are general rules and specific rules to the refuge.
The general rules are five. The first one is that, no matter what, even at the cost of our life, we should never give up the Triple Gem, the Three Precious Jewels, the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
Second is that, whatever happens, whatever need arises, we should not seek other means, but always seek the guidance and the blessings of the Triple Gem.
And the third one is to make offerings to the Triple Gem on a daily basis, and if this is impossible, then at least on special occasions. If we have a shrine, then it is important to make daily offerings, such as water offering, flowers, incense, fruit, etc. If we do not have a shrine, then we should make offerings in the temple, especially on special days, such as full moon and new moon days and, more importantly, on the Buddha's special days, such as that of His Birth, His Enlightenment, His Descending from the Heavenly Realms, Dharmachakra day, and so forth.
And then, the fourth rule is to practice refuge very diligently. Even though it is important to recite the refuge lines, 'I take refuge in the Buddha, I take refuge in the Dharma, I take refuge in the Sangha', these words alone are not enough to lead us to liberation, unless they come from the depths of our hearts. When we truly take refuge in the Triple Gem, it means that we are totally submitting ourselves to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, that we rely entirely on their guidance. For example, if we need to escape from the rain and we seek a cave to give us shelter, it won’t help us much to recite “cave”. Rather, in order to be safe from the rain, we make the effort to find shelter in a cave, or in a house, so that we’re spared from the rains. So similarly, although recitation is also important, the crucial thing is that, from the depths of one's heart, one takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. And so, it is important to practice diligently, and then, it is also good to encourage other people to take refuge.
The fifth rule is that, whatever we are doing, wherever we are going, we always remember the Buddha. And particularly, wherever we’re facing, to remember the Buddha of that particular direction. For example, when we are going to the east, to remember the Buddha Akshobya, when we’re going to the south, to remember the Buddha Ratnasambhava, and when we’re going west, to remember the Buddha Amitabha, and so on. We must at least remember the Buddha all the time, day and night.
These are the five general rules. Then there are the specific rules. One specific rule is that, after taking refuge in the Buddha, we cannot take refuge in the worldly deities. ‘Worldly deities’ refers to deities who are not free from the defilements, who are still tied to samsara. To these deities we can make offerings, but we can't take refuge in them. There is a vast difference between taking refuge and paying respect, or taking refuge and making offerings.
And then, after taking refuge in the Dharma, we can't harm any sentient being, at least not intentionally.
And by taking refuge in the Sangha, we can't take non-believers as our spiritual companions. There are also other rules - for example, after taking refuge in the Buddha, we cannot show any disrespect to any image of the Buddha, even to the broken pieces of a Buddha statue. It’s not right to leave any representation of the Buddha on the ground, or step on it, or lack respect towards it in any way.
In the same way, we can’t show disrespect to the Dharma, even to pieces of paper that contain Dharma words, by leaving them on the ground, sitting on them or stepping on them, and so forth. We should show the same respect for the monastic Sangha’s robes, and even to any piece of yellow or saffron-coloured cloth.
We must also try to develop genuine devotion and faith in the Buddha, and to practice the Dharma very diligently, as much as we can in relation to our ability and circumstances, by studying, contemplating and meditating. And we must try to develop a very close and genuine relationship with members of the Sangha.
So this, in general terms, is how we explain the refuge.
