"Charles are you sure, they'll like me? I just-"

"Mon amour, they will love you," he kisses your forehead, "I promise". Walking hand in hand with him towards where everyone is, he feels you squeezing his hand.

Charles and you have been dating for a while already, but you'd kept it a secret from almost everyone else due to how harsh people can be. He wanted to protect you from all the nasty comments people may make, but now you are making your first public appearance.

You weren't a well-known figure or model like the other wags, although Charles has told you many times you can most definitely be one if you wanted to. He met you when he went to buy flowers for his mother, Pascale, and claims that it was love at first sight.

Finally, you get to where hundreds of fans crowded behind a gate, they start yelling when they see you two.

Charles wraps his arm around your waist as you two get closer so he can sign some stuff as he's passing by.

"Charles! Charles, who's this?"

"Is this your girlfriend?"

"She's beautiful, Charles!"

People shout many things along those lines making you blush and Charles smile. He kisses your head again as you give them a shy wave, cheeks pink.

Charles finishes a hat he's signing as introduces you to the crowd, "This is my lovely girlfriend," he speaks and is shocked at how loud the crowd was. Clapping, wolf-whistling, and awing. He hadn't heard one nasty comment, not that there was anything to hate on you for, but it's shocking to see the overwhelming amount of positivity.

"Hi, everyone," you speak, smiling at the people.

"Here! Take this!" a little girl yells holding out a bracelet.

Charles steps forward, "Thank y-"

"No no!" the girl takes her hand back, making him furrow his eyebrows, "for you, miss! You are very pretty."

Your eyes widen, "Me?" She nods and you crouch down to her, "Wow! It's gorgeous," you beam. It was a red beaded bracelet with Charles' initials and number on it. "I love it, thank you so much, sweetie!"

Charles' heart races and his stomach flutters watching you with the young girl, and then when you interact with the others, who seem to be giving you heart eyes at this point.

His eyes narrow at some men looking a little too intensely, so he catches up to you and puts his arm around your shoulder. You lean into him as he waves bye to the fans. You blow a kiss, making them get loud once again, and then walk with Charles to where the drivers were hanging around.

"You see, mon cœur, they adored you," he brings your hand to his lips, kissing your palm.

You let out a happy sigh, "They were a bit louder than I thought, but it was such a relief."

Arriving where the others were, Lando was the first one to spot you two. "Ah! Look who we have here! Charles and the girlfriend who he told but not showed," he grins.

You smile and lean a bit more towards Charles, "Hello," your voice quiet. These were your boyfriends friends, if they didn't like you-

You feel Charles give your waist a light squeeze, taking you out of your thoughts.

"Wow, no wonder Charles didn't bring you here yet," Lando grins and puts his hand on Charles' shoulder, "you've got yourself a stunner. Scared someone's gonna whisk her away, are you?"

You laugh and feel yourself relax, "Oh hush!"

You look behind Lando and see Daniel, Oscar, Max, Carlos, and Lewis coming over.

They all greet you and for the next few minutes all of you are having a great time together, laughing, making jokes, and it's as if you've all been friends forever.

Charles frowns as he watches, none of them even glances at him, too engrossed with you telling some stories from your floral shop. After a few more minutes he decided he had enough and walks over to you.

"Mon amour, why don't we head to my drivers room, I'll show you around," he smiles, though it didn't quite reach his eyes.

"Alright, love. It was nice meeting you all! I'll see you guys soon!" You smile and they reciprocate it as you walk off.

Lewis and Max whistle in sync, "What a woman."

Charles huffs and hits his shoulder, "My woman, you mean."

Carlos chuckles, "Awh, is little Charles jealous?" Lando and Oscar laugh, glancing at each other.

"I'm not jealous," he frowns, crossing his arms. "It's just everyone we've seen today is fawning over her and it's like I'm not even here! Some of these people are ogling her like I, her boyfriend, am not right next to her!"

Danny shakes his head smiling, "Well, mate, she's a real sweetheart, what did you expect?"

"Well- I don't know! But she's waiting for me so... I'll see you guys later," he rolls his eyes as he hears his friends whistling as he walks towards you.

His eyes light up when he spots you chewing your lip, seemingly lost. "There you are!"

You turn towards him, "Thank goodness you're here! I was scared to ask for directions," you laugh.

"Good thing I'm here to be a guide then," he takes your hand gently and brings you into his room.

The moment the door is closed his lips are on yours, one hand cupping your face and neck and the other around your waist.

It took you a moment but you were kissing him back with the same passion. "I've been waiting to do that," he whispers, lips brushing yours.

You smiles, kissing him against. The rhythm of your lips together expressing your love without words.

He slowly walks back until he hits the bed, then sits down and grins as you straddle his lap.

"You're my girlfriend," he whispers, tracing your face, "my love, my angel."

You study his face as he admires yours, "I love you," you whisper, kissing him gently.

"I love you more, I don't know how I got so lucky."

You smile and hold his face in your hands, kissing his cheeks, nose, forehead, chin, and finally pecking his mouth, which was swollen from before. "I'm the lucky one, you are everything, darling," you smile.

He twirls a piece of your hair, "Alright, now how about I show you around the garage before people start wondering where we are?"

One thing I'm not sure was noticed, and certainly wasn't commented on is:

When Charles has his little breakdown in Qatar, it's silent. He learned it when his dad was sick, because he didn't want to put more stress on his family by letting them see how affected he was by it.

The small things is that in Monza the following year after the podium, his breakdown that time isn't quiet at all. And it's because telling Ferrari is much worse to him than anything that happened in Qatar, so he can't hold it back. And also because he, by that point, trusts Max completely to handle all of him. And Max understands how important it is to Charles to hide it from the world, so he hides him away and covers Charles' mouth to smother the sound for him.

It’s late.

It’s really late.

Elsewhere in the city, the track parties are starting to wind down, revellers finally satisfied with the celebrations.

The tiny back-streets of Monaco are a little darker – a little quieter, free of tourists. Most of the residents are already asleep, preparing for work in a few hours.

Lewis wishes he was among them.

God, he wishes.

And he would’ve been if he’d – as planned – left Jimmyz a few minutes earlier; if he’d gotten into the car he’d called to pick him up; if he hadn’t run into the two dead-weights he’s now trying to drag home.

With a sigh, he bends to sit on the road-edge, tapping hopelessly at his phone.

Kill me.

Unexpectedly, it’s only a few minutes later that the response pops up on his screen.

Good morning Lewis. Do you know it is 4 am?

So it is. Actually it’s almost 4.30 -- 4.26. Lewis left Jimmy’z over an hour ago. He can’t believe he’s still awake. He can’t believe Seb’s awake.

I do.

After a moment, trying to feel bad about sharing his misery, he adds: Sorry did i wake you?

No i was awake

God, why?

Why

It’s a school day. It’s my turn to get the kids ready.

Lewis smiles at the image of him puttering around the kitchen in his slippers, making packed lunches.

That can’t be right. Your kids are here with me.

With it, he sends a snap of the idiots in question.

The two of them stand a few metres back, facing off in the middle of the street.

“Charles”, Max scolds, irritated. “You are completely missing the apex. You need to come like this—here, braking already.”

“What? No.” Charles is getting just as heated, tipping his head too far back to see Max under the brim of his Mercedes cap. With his hands, he gestures to a point on the track. “Like this, it is a better exit. Because the next corner, it is faster there. And already you can get on the throttle here.”

They stare silently at one another for a moment, and Lewis actually thinks for a moment that the argument they’ve been having for the past twenty minutes might be over.

“Well no because the track of course would go that way”, Max defends, indicating a spot where the road forks off in another direction.

And they’re off again.

Lewis groans quietly, slumping to rest his elbows on his knees as his phone lights up with a laughing emoji from Seb.

The bickering continues. They orbit one another, arguing. Their brows twitch with bemusement and irritation. They glare and laugh, grabbing at one another’s hands, interrupting gestures and explanations.

They sway together and apart, as Max jabs at Charles’ ribs for a particularly cheeky remark.

Lewis catches himself watching but can’t look away, warm with affection. He only stands to interrupt when they get dangerously close, unable to keep their hands to themselves.

As he approaches to drag them apart, they’re still whispering under their breaths about overtaking rules, lips almost brushing, final shreds of plausible deniability truly in danger.

They seem to have forgotten about him completely, surprised -- and delighted, on Charles’ part -- to see him. Fortunately, it helps to get them moving again, Charles easily shepherded along. Max, for what Lewis thinks might be the first time in his life, seems content to follow a step behind.

What are your writing strengths? i'd say characterisation for sure. i really enjoy getting to know a character and deciding what their voice will be in my head. i also think i'm not too bad at worldbuilding although i don't tend to spend a lot of time on it within fics

Endeavour Series 8 Finale Review: Terminus

Warning: contains Endeavour spoilers.

Back in 2019, I interviewed Endeavour’s writer Russell Lewis for Den of Geek. We talked about the young Morse’s love life (or lack thereof), the show’s many nods to 1960s cinema, and even Endeavour’s interesting choices in facial hair. After what had, at that point, been six series of the Inspector Morse prequel, one question was inevitable. Where would it all end?

Lewis (appropriate name, that) wouldn’t be drawn on exactly what the long game was at that point. Quite right, too: it was always going to be ITV’s call, and he could have been inadvertently setting us up for disappointment. “There is an ultimate super-terminus we’ve all got in mind for it, and we’ll see if we get there.” One word in that sentence stands out from this distance: terminus. The end point of a bus or train route, the final stop on a journey.

‘Terminus’, the episode, begins with a few endings, none of them happy. We watch as a disturbing tableau plays out on a wintry Oxford night, intercut with unpleasant news cuttings from 1963 that tell of a gruesome murder spree dubbed the “Bloodbath at Tafferton Park.”  In the present day, it turns out that a young woman who seems to be the object of a bus conductor’s overbearing attentions isn’t, in fact, the murder victim we’re expecting. Instead, the unfortunate Professor Stanton is found, brutally stabbed and with his eyes scratched out with crosses, in the grimly fitting surroundings of a churchyard.

Director Kate Saxon does a superb job of keeping tension high in what, for me, is the stand-out episode of this eighth series. There are some great jump scares and effective use of light and shadow in a mystery that blends period-appropriate Hammer stylings with a touch of Agatha Christie. For all Max DeBryn’s arch talk of “exsanguination”, there’s nothing supernatural here in the end. Not unless you count the portents of the future that haunt its final moments, that is. This case seems like it should be “right up Morse’s apse”, as Max puts it while taking a moment to consider the unusual crime scene. Yet, for once, our man is nowhere to be seen.

Morse is in a bad way, drinking so heavily that he’s calling in sick to spend more time knocking back pints in the pub. Thursday and Bright have noticed, and Bright – never slow these days to spot problems with his men’s morale – is considering transferring him to Kidlington. A change is as good as a rest, in his view. Thursday doesn’t want to lose him, but he knows all’s not well with his protégé. The stage is set for a major falling out between the two men, as Morse doesn’t respond well to being confronted with the evidence that he has a problem. The news that Thursday’s son Sam has disappeared while serving in Northern Ireland has already put him on edge; the thought of losing his surrogate son is more than he can handle.

As a very convincing snow storm batters Oxford, bringing down phone and power lines and stranding its citizens in their houses, Morse tries to make his way home on the bus. It’s not long before the vehicle falls foul of the weather, and its mismatched band of passengers decide to seek shelter in, of all places, Tafferton Park. Abandoned after the slaughter at a school reunion carried out by “the Loomis boy”, the old place isn’t the most desirable shelter in a storm. Soon, though, the passengers will have bigger things to worry about than the cold. A killer is on the loose again, and this evening will prove to be a turning point for Morse, one way or another.

Everybody gets their turn in the spotlight here, as we reach the end of our route. Bright reveals the private grief behind his professional veneer to Thursday, with his usual quiet dignity. Endeavour and Joan Thursday share one last moment, reminding us of what might have been; Strange’s arrival to comfort Joan as she worries for both her missing brother and her parents’ struggling marriage is a nudge towards what likely will be. One of his fellow stranded passengers asks Endeavour his name. “Morse? Just Morse?” “That’s right,” he replies with the kind of smile that prohibits further questioning.

When the murderer is named and the case is closed, Morse and Thursday find themselves together in companionable silence. Fred’s still in limbo, with no news of his son; Morse, thanks to his old mentor’s help, is on the verge of breaking through the wall of pain he’s built around himself. The weather is changing. “Beginning to thaw,” Morse says, almost in wonderment. The sun will always come up, Fred tells him: that last, remorseless day is still in the future.

And so we leave Endeavour Morse, ready to take the first step on a journey we already know, from a last bus to Woodstock to murders Down Under. How fitting to part with a nod to John Thaw, just before Barrington Pheloung’s unforgettable theme kicks in. Late and much lamented, both of them: the last word, and the first, is rightly theirs.

It breaks my heart that some drivers didn’t took the knee. Especially Charles and his stupid statement why he didn’t do it. I agree with him that actions speak louder than just empty gestures but that’s literally what he does. He posts #BLM and points his finger to the "end racism" slogan and calls it a day. And now reading some comments under his statement.. he opened the door for racists to insult Lewis more, to mock him and paint him in a bad light. He is the definition of White Privilege 1/2

It’s ridiculous tbh... I talked to it to a friend of mine who doens’t watch F1 at all. And he was so confused: “So the slogan is ‘We race as One’ and you can’t even kneel as one?” And then I showed him the statements of Charles and he was also confused by the: “In some countries it’s seen as controversial”. He was confused as fuck?? “In what countries it’s controversial??? Drinking alcohol is also seen as controversial in some countries is he gonna stop doing that as well?”

I also showed him the one of Max and he was shocked by the sentence “I came to Austria to race”. Saying: Those few seconds you kneel don’t have any influence on the race. 

But it’s 100% like you said: them not kneeling gives haters/racists an opportunity to spread their hate. Blame it all on Lewis and all say HAHAHAH TAKE THAT LEWIS THEYRE NOT BOWING TO YOU!!!! When - like he said himself after - he didn’t even came up with the idea but Vettel and Grosjean did. Only when people said they wouldn’t he gave his pov and that was that. 

What more can he do? If he tells his story, his pov and people still don’t see it... I don’t know what a person can do... If that doesn’t hit you I don’t know what will. Maybe if he would be called some name if Charles or Max stood right beside him they would understand it... I don’t know... 

I also don’t know if it’s because they’re racist - because personally I don’t think they are - or that they don’t do it for sponsors/pressure for money etc... Whatever it is, it’s sad to see the clear divide and how drivers this big and young are so afraid to take a stand and be on the right side of change.

Lauren stared at the photo on her phone, barely comprehending what she saw. It was a picture of her son, William, lying in a hospital bed, his head wrapped in a bloody bandage. He had been assaulted in what he said was a random robbery, and Lauren wanted to believe him. Given what they knew about their son’s current lifestyle, she didn’t know what to think. Lauren and her husband, Mike, had been lukewarm about William’s plan to move to Chicago when he graduated from college. They understood why a guy from a small town in Alabama would want to spread his wings, but his idea — to launch a neighborhood-based classified-ad service to sell things like used furniture, cars, and household goods — sounded iffy. William had majored in business, but he knew very little about technology and even less about Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods. But after a six-month job search closer to home turned up nothing, she and Mike had gotten William a plane ticket and wished him well. The Aalto – Life of an Architect Holiday Cocktail

It would seem that I am getting a reputation where cocktails are involved … ironic since I don’t really drink all that much. While I enjoy drinking adult beverages, it would appear that I enjoy making them just as much as drinking them. What started as a way to entertain myself a few years ago, I have since put upon myself the yearly challenge of coming up with an appropriate holiday cocktail which I will share as a reward to the people who have put up reading my site over the preceding 11 months. I like to think of it as a virtual cocktail between you and me, shared in friendship and a mutual love of architecture … and liquor.

I didn’t really come up with this year’s cocktail on my own as I spent the last few weekends reverse engineering a cocktail I had while on my recent trip to Helsinki, Finland. As it turns out, I have a friend who lives in Helsinki, Lewis Martin, who holds the rare distinction of being one of a very small number of people who I have let author a post on this site (read that post here: “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Architecture“). My wife and I met up with Lewis one evening and he brought us to the Ateljee Bar, which resides on the top floor of the Sokos Hotel Torni. We had a lovely evening talking and drinking, and to my great delight, there was a cocktail on the menu called “The Aalto” that I ordered … which is precisely what an architect should have done.

This is the very same Aalto cocktail that I ordered. In order to capture this image, I had to enlist photo support from my wife – she turned the flashlight feature on her phone to help illuminate the drink. Let me tell you that this was a very light and refreshing cocktail, probably more suited for warmer climates, and I told my wife that I was convinced they had served me the alcohol-free version.

After my second drink, there was “evidence” to indicate that they did not.

Sometime during my second drink, I decided that I would make this my 2018 Life of an Architect Holiday cocktail. All I had to go on to reverse engineer this drink was a ridiculously bad photo I took of the menu that listed the main ingredients.

The first item I decided to tackle was the garnish – which was ridiculously simple. All that was needed was to prepare some lime wheels, add what appeared to be “Holiday” spice, and then dry them out.

The next step took a bit more time – preparing the raspberry infused vodka. If you want to skip this step, all you would do is buy pre-prepared raspberry flavored vodka – simple enough and this is exactly what I did the for the first round of experiments. The second round I decided that I wanted a bit more raspberry flavor (it can get lost in the cranberry juice that is added later if you are not careful).

Making your own fruit-infused vodka is ridiculously easy, it just requires a bit of planning and some patience.

I decided to not skip this step for round two and if I’m going to be making any fruit-infused vodka, I might as well make some different flavors.

I had to make the raspberry version since I need it for “The Aalto” but I decided that I would add just a small amount of lemon to the jar since lemon juice is a part of this recipe. It’s hard to see the lemon wheels in the above picture but they are easy enough to spot in the next image.

I am making three different versions altogether. Starting on the left you have blackberry/lemon, raspberry/lemon in the middle, and cherry on the far right. I used seven 1-pint (12 ounces) Ball mason jars (you can find them here but they can be found in your local grocery store quite easily) and not quite two 750ml bottles of vodka.

I used my preferred vodka – “Russian Standard” – which a friend of mine (who is actually Russian) told me that this is the only vodka Russians would drink … which was good enough for me to make the switch (although he might not approve of me adding fruit to his beloved vodka).

Once the fruit and vodka have been mixed together, simply give the jars a shake and put them in the refrigerator for a length of time between 3 and 7 days. Give them a shake every day and let time do the rest of the work. Once you pull them, stain the vodka out from the fruit and get rid of the fruit (or use it in something, maybe your oatmeal … it’ll be highly alcoholic) and keep the vodka in the fridge where it will remain good for up to 6 months although I don’t think mine will last that long.

So after many glorious attempts, I think I nailed it – the final recipe is shown above. For the final taste test, I invited my neighbor Poul Ober over to the house to confirm my attempts. Since Poul is 50% Danish, and I am 50% Norwegian, together we are 100% qualified to evaluate whether or not I have successfully recreated this cocktail named after Finland’s greatest architect.

After Poul and I had a few Aalto’s (we were nothing if not thorough in our testing) I remembered that I needed to take a picture of my final product – drinking a few of these can do that to you.
