sincerest apologies if you've been asked and said something about this before, but i'm curious what your process for coming up with your characters is! the way the isat cast are written is so good and well rounded, they each really feel like a person. how do you develop them to that point! for that matter, was there any interesting Character behind the scenes development between comic!siffrin and game siffrin as their story changed and became more fleshed out? thank you so much if you decide to answer, and if you don't that's ok too and i hope you have a good day!
ok i feel like i have answered this before, but it's not in my #reference tag so you get a whole new answer!!!!!!
-figure out a Trope. a Fella full of Tropes. like omg thats a Fella who Likes Puns. take your Trope Fella thats your basis.
-give them a secret. or more. the secrets will drive their actions. this Fella has amnesia and also has abandonment issues. do not reveal the secrets until the Right Moment, but you should often allude to it
-with those two things you will get Rules. this is a Fella who likes Puns. they use puns to deflect. so if someone asks a question that is a little too close to home, they will ALWAYS DEFLECT.
-write them in so many situations. how would they react to this? what would they say here? how would they answer when someone asks about their favorite hobby? would they be honest about it? or are they lying about it? why?
-every situation theyre into should go back to the rules. even if you're the only one who knows it. just a sprinkle to make people go "huh that was a weird reaction...."
-that way, people experiencing the story again will be able to go "OH MY GOD... THAT WASNT A PUN OUT OF NOWHERE... THAT WAS A /DEFLECTION/" and they will love it.
-rules are here to be broken. but only for the best moments ever
-lastly, give them a hobby or two to make them seem like real people. be REAL specific about it. this girl doesnt just like romance books she likes MONSTER ROMANCE

the jjk men reaction to their wife without their wedding ring ?
Gojo satoru — Gojo Satoru strolled into the living room, humming a cheerful tune as he casually twirled his sunglasses between his fingers. It was a rare moment of downtime for both of you, and he had been looking forward to lounging around with his beloved wife. His sharp eyes, however, immediately zeroed in on you, sprawled out on the couch with your phone in one hand and your other hand resting lazily on the armrest.
At first, he didn’t notice it. But as his gaze lingered—because, honestly, you looked stunning even in sweatpants—it hit him. Something was… missing.
His blue eyes narrowed slightly, and the grin on his face turned into a playful smirk. He crossed the room and plopped down dramatically next to you, making the couch shift slightly.
“Darling,” he began in a tone dripping with mock severity, leaning closer to you as if he had discovered the secret to the universe.
You glanced up briefly, raising an eyebrow. “Hmm?”
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he reached for your left hand, gently lifting it as if it were a delicate artifact. He examined it closely, turning it this way and that. That’s when he saw it. Or rather, didn’t see it.
“Oh. My. God.” he gasped, clutching your hand with both of his. “Where is it? Where’s the ring? Our ring?” His voice escalated into a melodramatic pitch, and he looked at you as though you’d just committed the ultimate betrayal.
You blinked at him, utterly unbothered. “I took it off while I was washing the dishes earlier. I forgot to put it back on. Relax, Gojo.”
But Gojo wasn’t about to let it go. He sprang to his feet, one hand pressed to his chest as if your words had physically wounded him. “Forgot? You forgot the symbol of our eternal, unbreakable love?” He pointed dramatically at your bare ring finger. “Do you know what this says to the world? That I, Gojo Satoru, am unclaimed! Unwanted! A free agent!”
You rolled your eyes, fighting back a smile. “Satoru, nobody in the world thinks you’re unclaimed. You’re too loud for that.”
But he wasn’t listening. He began pacing back and forth in front of you, gesturing wildly. “Do you realize how many people out there are just waiting for a moment like this? They’ll think I’m single! Do you want people throwing themselves at me?” He spun around, his eyes wide with mock horror. “What if Nanami hears about this? Or worse, Gojo’s fan club?!”
That finally got a laugh out of you. “You have a fan club?”
“Of course I do,” he said, puffing his chest out. “I’m Gojo Satoru. But that’s not the point!” He dropped back onto the couch beside you, leaning in close so that his face was mere inches from yours. His eyes, bright and intense as always, locked onto yours. “The point is, you, my dearest, most beautiful wife, have forgotten our sacred bond. And I, as your loving husband, must now remind you why you married me.”
Before you could protest, he scooped you up in his arms as if you weighed nothing. You let out a startled yelp, laughing despite yourself. “Satoru, what are you doing?”
“I’m making sure you never forget again,” he said with a grin that could melt anyone’s heart.
He spun you around once, his laughter mingling with yours. You tried to wriggle out of his grasp, but he held you firm, his warm hands steady and strong.
“Put me down, you lunatic!”
“Not until you swear to never, ever leave your wedding ring behind again,” he said, his voice playful but with a hint of mock sternness.
“Okay, fine!” you managed between laughs. “I swear! I won’t forget again!”
Satisfied, he set you back down on the couch, but not before brushing a stray strand of hair out of your face and planting a soft kiss on your forehead.
“Good,” he said, his tone shifting to that softer, more genuine one he reserved just for you. He sat back, crossing his arms as if he’d just won an important battle. “By the way,” he added, smirking, “your wedding ring is on the counter by the sink. You’re welcome.”
You groaned, throwing a pillow at him. “You knew this whole time and still made a scene?”
“Of course I did,” he said, catching the pillow effortlessly and flashing you a smug grin. “What kind of husband would I be if I didn’t take every opportunity to shower my wife with attention?”
You rolled your eyes again, but the warmth spreading in your chest betrayed how much you adored him—dramatics and all.
Geto Suguru — It was late in the afternoon, the golden light from the setting sun spilling through the windows of your quiet home. You were seated at the kitchen table, sipping tea while flipping through a book. The peaceful silence was interrupted by the soft sound of Suguru’s footsteps as he entered the room, his long, dark hair tied loosely behind him, and his expression calm as always.
“Hmm,” he hummed as his sharp eyes immediately noticed you. His lips curved into a faint smile. “There you are.”
“Here I am,” you replied with a playful grin, not looking up from your book
He walked over to you and placed a gentle hand on your shoulder, leaning down to press a soft kiss to the top of your head. Everything about Suguru exuded calm, but there was something sharp about his gaze as he straightened, his attention drawn to your left hand resting on the table.
“Where’s your ring?” he asked, his tone casual but with a slight edge of curiosity.
You blinked, glancing at your hand. “Oh,” you said, realizing the absence of the small band. “I took it off earlier while I was washing the dishes. I must’ve forgotten to put it back on.”
Suguru’s expression didn’t change much, but there was a faint flicker of something in his dark eyes—amusement, perhaps. He moved to the chair across from you and sat down, resting his chin on his hand as he regarded you.
“Forgotten, hm?” he murmured, his voice low and smooth.
You tilted your head, sensing the subtle shift in his mood. “It’s not a big deal, Suguru,” you said, brushing it off.
His smile widened ever so slightly, though there was a teasing glint in his eyes. “Not a big deal? My wife walking around without a ring, making it look like she’s unmarried? How scandalous.”
You snorted, closing your book and setting it aside. “Oh, please. Nobody is going to think I’m unmarried, Suguru.”
“Hmm,” he hummed again, his gaze locking with yours. “Perhaps not. But it’s the principle, isn’t it?” He reached across the table, taking your hand in his. His thumb brushed over your bare ring finger in slow, deliberate strokes. “This little band means something, doesn’t it? A reminder of the vows we made.”
You rolled your eyes, though his touch was warm and soothing. “You’re being dramatic.”
“Maybe,” he said, his tone still even, though the faint smile on his lips betrayed his amusement. “But I quite like seeing you wear it. It suits you.”
“Well, it’s sitting on the counter,” you admitted. “I just forgot to put it back on.”
Suguru sighed softly, standing up from his chair and walking to the kitchen counter. He picked up your ring, holding it delicately between his fingers before turning back to you. His movements were always deliberate, almost graceful, as he returned to your side and crouched down next to you.
“Hold out your hand,” he said, his voice gentle but firm.
You quirked an eyebrow at him but complied, holding out your hand. Suguru took it carefully, his fingers warm against yours.
“You know,” he began as he slipped the ring back onto your finger, “this little thing is more than just a piece of metal. It’s a claim, a promise, and a reminder of the fact that you belong to me, just as I belong to you.”
His words were soft but carried a weight that sent a shiver down your spine. When the ring was back in its rightful place, Suguru raised your hand to his lips, pressing a lingering kiss to your knuckles
“There,” he murmured. “That’s better.”
You shook your head, your cheeks warm. “You’re ridiculous, you know that?”
“Maybe,” he said with a smirk, standing back up to his full height. “But I’m your ridiculous.”
You rolled your eyes, but the warmth in your chest betrayed how much his little gestures meant to you. Suguru wasn’t always loud in his affections, but moments like this reminded you of just how deeply he cared for you—and how much he loved to remind you of it.
Nanami kento — The quiet hum of the apartment greeted Nanami as he stepped inside, his shoulders relaxing ever so slightly now that he was home. He loosened his tie as he glanced around, his sharp eyes immediately landing on you sitting at the dining table, your laptop open and a mug of tea beside you.
“Welcome home,” you said, looking up with a smile.
“Good evening,” he replied, his voice calm and steady as always. He moved toward you, setting his briefcase down with practiced precision before leaning in to kiss your temple. “Busy day?”
“Not really,” you said, leaning back in your chair. “I spent most of it cleaning and catching up on emails.”
Nanami nodded, his gaze briefly scanning the room before settling on you. As you reached for your mug, his brow furrowed slightly.
“Where’s your ring?” he asked suddenly, his tone even but with a hint of curiosity.
You froze for a moment, glancing at your hand. Your wedding ring was missing from its usual place, and you let out a small laugh as you realized. “Oh, I took it off earlier when I was cleaning. I guess I forgot to put it back on.”
Nanami’s expression remained calm, but you noticed the slight tightening of his jaw. He pulled out the chair across from you and sat down, resting his hands on the table.
“I see,” he said quietly, his gaze dropping to your hand again.
You tilted your head, sensing his hesitation. “It’s not a big deal, Kento,” you said lightly. “I’ll go grab it in a second.”
He sighed softly, his eyes meeting yours. “It’s not that I doubt you,” he said, his voice calm but carrying a subtle weight. “It’s just… that ring isn’t just an accessory to me.”
You raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Oh?”
Nanami reached across the table, gently taking your hand in his. His thumb brushed over the bare spot where your ring should have been. “It’s a symbol,” he said after a moment. “Of us. Of everything we’ve chosen to share. When I see it on your finger, it’s a quiet reassurance that, no matter how chaotic things get, we have something solid.”
His words hung in the air, and you felt a pang of guilt mixed with affection. Nanami wasn’t one to dramatize things, but his quiet honesty carried more weight than anything else ever could
“I didn’t mean to worry you,” you said softly, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.
“I’m not worried,” he replied, shaking his head slightly. “I know where we stand. But… seeing it missing felt strange. Like something wasn’t quite right.”
Your lips curved into a warm smile. “You’re such a sentimentalist, you know that?”
He exhaled through his nose, his expression softening as he gave you a faint smile. “I’d argue I’m just practical. But if it makes me a sentimentalist to care about something that reminds me of you, then so be it.”
You chuckled, standing up and leaning down to kiss his cheek. “I’ll go grab it now. I don’t want you to feel off balance.”
As you walked to the kitchen to retrieve your ring from the small dish by the sink, you couldn’t help but feel touched by how deeply he cared about even the smallest details.
When you returned, the ring back on your finger, Nanami’s eyes immediately dropped to your hand. He gave a small, approving nod and reached for your hand again.
“Much better,” he murmured, his thumb brushing over the ring.
You sat down beside him this time, leaning into his solid presence. “You know, Kento, you’re a lot more romantic than you like to admit.”
He huffed softly, his lips curving into the faintest smirk. “I’ll take that as a compliment,” he said, resting his hand over yours.
Toji fushiguro— The heavy thud of boots echoed through the entryway as Toji walked into the house, his presence impossible to miss. You looked up from the couch where you were scrolling on your phone, catching the sharp glint of his green eyes as he shrugged off his jacket and tossed it over a nearby chair.
“Hey, you’re back early,” you said with a smile, sitting up as he crossed the room toward you.
He gave a small grunt of acknowledgment, his version of a greeting, before plopping down beside you. “Work wrapped up faster than I thought,” he said, leaning back and stretching an arm over the back of the couch.
As he settled in, his eyes flicked toward you, and they instinctively scanned over you with the same sharpness he applied to everything. They lingered on your hand for a beat longer than usual.
“Where’s your ring?” he asked, his tone casual but with an edge of curiosity.
You blinked, looking down at your bare finger. “Oh,” you said lightly, “I took it off earlier while I was washing dishes. I guess I forgot to put it back on.”
Toji raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into a sly smirk. “Forgot, huh?”
You rolled your eyes, already sensing where this was going. “Don’t start,” you said, crossing your arms. “It’s not like I lost it or anything. It’s on the counter by the sink.”
“Mm,” he hummed, leaning forward slightly, his elbows resting on his knees as he looked at you with that unreadable expression of his. “Funny. I didn’t think you’d be the type to forget something like that.”
You huffed, narrowing your eyes at him. “It’s just a ring, Toji. Don’t make it a big deal.”
“Just a ring?” he repeated, his tone laced with amusement. He leaned back again, draping an arm across your shoulders. “That’s not what you said when I gave it to you.”
You felt your cheeks heat up at the memory. Toji wasn’t exactly the sentimental type, so when he had proposed—ring and all—it had been one of the rare moments where he let his guard down. The ring symbolized more than just a commitment; it was his way of showing you that you were the one person he trusted enough to hold onto.
“Okay, fine,” you muttered, avoiding his gaze. “It’s not ‘just a ring.’ Happy now?”
Toji chuckled, his deep voice rumbling through the room. “Damn right I’m happy. You’re lucky I’m not one of those guys who gets all pissy about this stuff.”
“You literally just called me out for it,” you shot back, giving him a playful glare.
“Yeah, but I didn’t yell about it,” he said, smirking as he reached for your hand. He turned it over, his calloused fingers brushing against your bare finger. “Guess I just like seeing it on you, that’s all.”
The sincerity in his voice caught you off guard. Toji wasn’t one for flowery words or grand romantic gestures, but when he said things like this, it was impossible not to feel the depth of his emotions.
You softened, resting your other hand over his. “I didn’t mean to make you feel weird about it,” you said. “I’ll go grab it right now.”
As you stood up to retrieve your ring, Toji leaned back and watched you with a lazy grin. “Don’t keep me waiting, princess. Gotta make sure everyone knows you’re mine.”
You shot him a look over your shoulder, but there was no real annoyance behind it. When you returned with the ring on your finger, Toji reached for your hand again, his thumb brushing over the metal as his grin widened.
“Now that’s more like it,” he said, tugging you back onto the couch beside him.
“You’re ridiculous,” you muttered, though you couldn’t help but smile.
“And you love it,” he replied easily, pulling you closer until you were leaning against his chest.
Sukuna ryomen — The air was heavy with the scent of incense and sakura blossoms, the grand halls of Sukuna’s domain illuminated by the flickering light of oil lamps. You sat on a low, ornate platform, your fingers absently tracing patterns on a delicate porcelain cup as you waited for Sukuna to return.
The sound of his footsteps was unmistakable, his commanding presence preceding him. When he stepped into the room, his twin sets of eyes found you immediately, piercing and intense. Dressed in his ceremonial robes, Sukuna looked every bit the fearsome king he was rumored to be, his aura suffocating yet magnetic.
“Wife,” he greeted in a low, resonant voice that sent a shiver down your spine. “What mischief have you been up to today?”
You smiled, setting down your cup as he approached. “Nothing that would trouble the great Ryomen Sukuna,” you teased, tilting your head to look up at him.
He chuckled darkly, the sound laced with amusement and menace. “Good. I’ve had enough annoyances for one day.”
As he lowered himself to sit beside you, his gaze swept over you, sharp and all-seeing. His attention lingered on your left hand, resting idly in your lap. His expression darkened instantly, a storm brewing in his crimson eyes.
“Where is it?” he demanded, his tone suddenly sharp.
You blinked, confused. “Where is what?”
“Your ring,” he said coldly, his jaw tightening as his eyes bore into yours. “The one I placed on your finger. The one that marks you as mine.”
Realization dawned, and you glanced down at your bare hand. “Oh,” you said lightly. “I removed it while preparing the tea earlier. I didn’t want it to get dirty.”
Sukuna’s expression didn’t soften. If anything, it grew more severe. “And you thought it wise to leave yourself unmarked?”
You frowned, sitting up straighter. “It’s just a ring, Sukuna. It’s not as though I’ve forgotten what it means.”
“Just a ring?” he repeated, his voice a low, dangerous growl. He leaned closer, his four eyes narrowing as his hand shot out to grab your chin, tilting your face up to meet his gaze. “You insult me with such carelessness.”
You held his gaze, refusing to flinch under the weight of his presence. “It was not meant as an insult,” you said firmly. “I was thinking practically. Surely you don’t think a piece of metal is the only proof of my loyalty to you.”
Sukuna’s lips curled into a wicked grin, though his eyes still burned with displeasure. “No, but it is a visible declaration. One that tells the world you belong to me. You will not cast it aside so lightly again.”
You sighed, reaching up to rest your hand over his. “It was not my intention to ‘cast it aside,’ as you put it. But if it matters so much to you, I will retrieve it immediately.”
“Do that,” he said, releasing your chin with a flick of his wrist. “And do not make me repeat myself on this matter.”
You rose gracefully, moving toward the chamber where you had set the ring aside. Sukuna’s gaze followed you, his eyes dark and watchful, though you could sense the simmering satisfaction beneath his displeasure.
When you returned, the ring once again adorning your finger, Sukuna reached out and caught your wrist, pulling you closer. He inspected the ring as though ensuring it hadn’t been damaged in your absence.
“Better,” he murmured, his thumb brushing over the metal. He glanced up at you, his expression softening slightly—though his grin retained its edge. “Do not forget, wife. You are mine. Always.”
You smirked, leaning down so your face was close to his. “And you are mine, Ryomen Sukuna. Do not forget that either.”
He laughed, a deep, reverberating sound that filled the room. “Bold as ever,” he said, his voice dripping with approval. “Perhaps that’s why I tolerate you.”

Autumn (Cregan Stark x Reader)
Summary: As a Princess, you aren’t used to rejection. But Cregan, your husband, has vowed to only ever love one woman, and it isn't you. Right?
Warnings: Unreliable narrator!!!! Mature language. Descriptions of grief.
A/N: I was not expecting the response my silly little idea has gotten. I am very thankful for all of you who decide to read it, and would love to hear what you think of this chapter. Series masterlist here.
YOU CRUMPLE THE letter in your fist, hearing the parchment wrinkle with a satisfying sound. Then, you throw it into the flames, watching as the fire grows slightly bigger, and the ball uncurls, alight for a second, before it is fully consumed.
It doesn’t soothe you as you thought it would. The odious parchment offering you an honor guard from your future husband might be gone, but you still have to journey North before a moon since Luke’s funeral has passed.
At the thought of your brother, a sharp, stabbing pain, manifests in your chest. You choke down a sob. You had not realized you had started to measure time like this. Before and After Luke’s death, as people did with Before and After the Conquest.
Your grief only serves to fuel your rage, though. How could he? How could he demand you be wed when you were still in mourning? When you were still thinking of your sweet brother, not of keeps, and lords, and men?
“You dare!” You screech, barging inside Jacaerys’ rooms. Whatever he is doing, hunched over his desk, is interrupted. “You cannot do this to me! Mother will not allow it.”
Jace sets down his quill. He turns to look at you, his expression calm. You would think him indifferent, were it not for the fact that there is the slightest furrow of his brows.
“We need men.” He states, simply, and when you are about to interrupt him to say there are many more in the realm, he keeps speaking. “We need his men. The North is the largest kingdom, you know this as well as I. And when a Stark calls the banners, they are the only ones who respond in full.”
Your hands ball into fists. You hate that he is acting so composed, so rational. After Luke died, you felt like a chained dragon, roaring your grief and wishing to be freed to set ablaze those that had wronged you. Once, you had been as gracious as him and mother, composed even in the height of emotion. But grief has made you into live lighting, ready to strike at the slightest provocation.
Your emotions are out of control. You know this. You get angered at the barest hint of an insult, you cry as easily as a newborn babe. Knowing it doesn’t stop you from lashing out, though. It only makes you regret it later.
“Our mother promised I was to have my pick of suitors, not that I would be sold like a cow!” You point an accusing finger to his chest. Jace sighs and gets up, surrounding the desk.
“I understand you are upset.” He tries offering you a hug, but you jerk away. His face hardens slightly. “But this is war.”
As if you do not know. As if you haven’t lost a sibling, too. Your face crumbles, and Jace calls your name, but hearing his voice, how similar Luke and him sound, only makes you cry harder.
“Hey, hey, it’s not so bad.” He hugs you, pressing your face against his doublet. The material is soft against your skin, and you feel tempted to let go of your rage against him and sink into his arms. Jace is barely a man, too, just as you are barely a woman. He is doing as best as he can, spread too thin by the weight of responsibility that comes with being heir. “Cregan is a good man. I got to know him during the time…”
Yes, he was doing as best as he could. But it hadn’t been his own hand that he had bartered away, had it? The insidious voice in your head asks. It isn’t him who is making a sacrifice. And such a hollow one. He claims to need men, but he won’t be getting even the full northern army.
“You sold me for a few Greybeards! Not even a proper army! Good Gods, you are a fool.” You cry out.
“Lord Stark assures me…” Jace starts, with the tone of someone who has already had this same argument. Were you thinking clearly, you would pause and realize why. Instead...
“He has put a wife in the grave already.” It is the only thing you know about him. Not much is whispered about Cregan Stark, at least, nothing concerning. You would remember it. The only thing that you know, though, is that he is a Stark and his wife is dead.
“You make it sound as if he killed her himself with his bare hands.” Jace scoffs. “I assure you, he dearly loved Arra Norrey and would have never harmed her. You know the dangers of childbirth. Perhaps even better than I.”
Perfect. He hadn’t killed the damn woman, he was just still in love with her. By the Seven, Jace was a fool. You hated being second in anything. Here, at home, you were already second to Jace, and you resented it. Being a twin meant having to share everything, including the love of those around you.
When you married, you had hoped to be the only woman in your husband’s life, not to be compared to a ghost. You had seen exactly how that went. King Viserys had never forgotten his first wife, calling for her years after her death, even as Alicent was the one to nurse him during his illness.
“He is still a widower.” You repeat, stubbornly.
Jace pinches the bride of his nose, before letting out a deep exhale. His next words are spoken extremely slowly, as if talking to a child. It makes you bristle.
“You said you were afraid of childbirth, and he already has an heir. There is no better solution.”
It would be thoughtful, were it not for the fact that:
“His first wife died in childbirth!”
As Jace prepares a scathing comeback, face scrunched up in mirrored displeasure to your own, the voice of your mother startles you both.
“What is going on here?” She asks, mouth pursed in an expression identical to Jace. The Queen looks as regal as ever, and it only serves to make you feel a tad embarrassed. With wild hair and eyes, face flushed from rage, you are sure that next to her, you must look like a wilding. “Why can the whole castle hear your quarrel?”
“It’s his fault.” You accuse, pointing at Jace.
“My fault?!” He says, placing his hands on his hips. “Apologies, I think they didn’t hear your screeching about Lord Stark in Driftmark!”
“So you informed her?” Your mother asks, calmly. Too calmly for someone who has just found out. Had it been her plan all along?
“Did you knew all along?” You whisper.
Rhaenyra turns to look at you. As always, your mother has a smile ready for you, but as of late, they are laced with sadness. This one is no exception.
“I did. I think it is for the best. You will be safer next to Cregan Stark, in Winterfell, than you could ever be here.”
You examine her expression. Her eyes are swollen and red rimmed, grief clouding her regal face. There is a certain determination in her features, a calm acceptance in her eyes, that tells you that her mind is already made.
Her face is not one of a distraught mother who will soon give her daughter away. You know her too well to mistake it for that.
“You hoped for this.” You keep your voice dangerously low, your anger threatening to bubble up in your throat. “You did because I have no dragon. I bet you are scheming to send Rhaena away too!”
Your mother doesn’t answer.
Her silence is damming. You turn to look at Jace, disbelieving. Of course the two of them had been scheming behind your back. Your brother had always been the closest one to your mother.
“And neither of you could tell me to my face?” You ask, letting out a hysterical laugh. “I had to find out from a letter from fucking Cregan Stark. I am not leaving. You cannot make me. ”
Suddenly, your mother grabs you by the shoulders. Her face is frightening, like an avenging goddess of Old Valyria. Her lips are curled back, teeth bared, and her eyes are as wild as yours.
“Listen to me!” She says, shaking you hard. Tears begin to fall from her eyes, but she doesn’t seem to register them. “Listen to me! Luke is dead. He is dead, and you will obey me because I cannot bear to lose any more of my children. You are going North. Your Queen commands it.”
She turns on her heel and leaves, leaving you standing on still shaking legs.
CREGAN HAD BEEN lingering near the entrance of Winterfell ever since his men had spotted the Queen’s banner on the horizon. Back then, they had expected the party to arrive in half a day. He didn’t care if he appeared too eager, his usual stoicism was failing him in the face of his nerves.
The first time Cregan had married, he had known the bride for a long time. Arra had been his childhood companion, and they had spent many moons together, playing Come-into-my-castle and Bears-and-maids. Cregan had unfortunately been the maid many more times than he preferred.
He had not feared marriage then. Spending forever chained to another person wouldn’t be so bad if that person was Arra.
Now, he did. Cregan had been content on his own, and had no desire to remarry. Even if he had, a southron princess wouldn’t have been his first choice. Though Prince Jacaerys had been honorable and dutiful, he was still naive. They were nearly of an age, but when Cregan had stood next to him, he had felt as old as his Greybeards.
A naive little princess would never survive in the North. His lords would eat her alive. The Lady of Winterfell couldn’t be some frail little thing, she had to be strong. Strong enough to hold Winterfell in his absence if needed, were the threat from beyond the Wall come to pass.
Arra had been the only woman he had thought of marrying because she had been the only woman he had thought fit to the task. She had been of the North, as he was, and it had helped him envision a future together where they ruled over the very same land that had birthed both of them.
It was only adequate that the Lady of Winterfell was a woman of the North. Southron Princesses, especially those who had been groomed to marry inside the family, could be of little help running a keep. If he had to remarry and choose a southron, Cregan would have preferred a stronger one.
Yet if wishes were dragons, beggars would soar through the skies. Prince Jacaerys had seemed a bit insulted at his offer of Greybeards, but with winter coming, it was all Cregan could spare. He was no stranger to political games, though, and knew he had to smooth down the feathers his offer had ruffled.
Hence, the offer. To receive the toothless dragon in his home and keep it safe. A favor, from an older brother to another. The Gods knew if Sara was near war at all, Cregan would do everything in his power to send her somewhere safe. He would be forever indebted to the man who aided him to do so.
And Prince Jacaerys, showing himself to be the dutiful prince and brother he was, had understood the offer for what it was. A true alliance. A Pact of Ice and Fire, to bound their bloodlines and keep the beloved, but defenseless sister safe.
It had impressed Cregan. Jacaerys was a serious man, no matter his dubious parentage. He could picture himself following him. After all, his Targaryen blood and character were the important part. That was what made him a worthy King.
Without a dragon of your own, your journey had been perilous. He knew you had ridden without banners until you had safely arrived into northern territory, a feat that had taken you a whole moon. Cregan had offered to have his men meet you halfway, but his letter doing so had gone unanswered. It had only prompted new anxieties for him.
What if he failed to fulfill his promise because you were abducted or harmed in the journey? What if the people riding with Black banners weren’t truly your honor guard, but an ambush prepared by the enemy?
Cregan doubted he would be at ease until he saw you emerge out of your wheelhouse, whole and unscathed. Hence, his waiting by the door. He would not be nervous a moment longer than he needed to.
The first thing Cregan saw was that your honor guard was smaller than he expected. He had known you would travel with a sparse escort, as to not attract undue attention. It was a miracle you had made it here with only ten guards, though. The wheelhouse and the men carried so many packages that Cregan would have known you were a Princess even without expecting you. Anyone would have known.
In contrast, the woman who stepped out of the wheelhouse wasn’t miraculous nor was she what Cregan envisioned when thinking of a Princess.
You were… Pitiful. Cregan understood now why Prince Jacaerys was so desperate to protect you. You wouldn’t survive a winter in the North, hells, it looked like a strong breeze would blow you away.
Your hair and eyes were as dark as the ones of your brother. You wore a pretty wool dress, in mourning black. The lacings on the back were done too tightly, a lot of the ribbon hanging limply, and the dress was loose around your chest and hips. It was clear you had recently lost weight, probably during the journey because the gown hadn’t been altered to fit you.
There were dark circles under your eyes, which were also red rimmed. Your skin was pale, your dark hair braided back in a severe style. Grief didn’t suit you. You looked small and sad, despite having a pleasing figure.
It didn’t help that the dress you had chosen was one far too thin for a sensible northern woman to wear. The day wasn’t even that cold, but you were already shivering. It was barely snowing, for the Gods’s sake!
Cregan approached you and gave you a bow.
“Princess.” He extended his arm to you. You took it, shivering. “I trust your journey was pleasant?”
“Pleasant enough.” At least your voice isn’t frail. The last thing Cregan needed was a soft-spoken southron lady. You even manage to smile at him, which makes you look considerably more attractive.
Cregan would admit one thing, and one thing only: Queen Rhaenyra made pretty children. Both you and Jacaerys had sinful mouths and bewitching dark eyes, though he found yours far more pleasing.
“I am sorry for your loss.” He says, as he escorts you inside Winterfell. Your trembling intensifies, instead of subsiding in the warmth of his hall. You say nothing.
When he risks a glance at your face, your eyes are suspiciously wet. You avoid meeting his eyes, even as he offers you the customary salt and bread.
“I remember when Arra got here.” Cregan offers, awkwardly. He isn’t quite sure of what to say to a grieving Princess, so he decides to share something about himself in hopes that you will open up too. He desperately needs to change the subject. Or to start a subject. He is not picky, anything that keeps you from crying will do. “She brought less of a procession than you did. And less luggage.”
“She was quite closer to home than I.” You reply, and your tone has regained strength. You no longer shake, body stiffer. Cregan decides to take it as a good sign. You are clearly struggling to get a hold of yourself, which is why you turn so tense, so he decides to keep speaking to give you some more time.
“She was. By far a more practical woman.” He smiles at you, teasingly. “But if the fuss makes you happy…”
You laugh. When he gets to know you better, Cregan will realize that your laughter wasn’t genuine.
He will also realize this had been the moment your heart iced over.
YOU PAGE THROUGH your book, in silence. Winterfell doesn’t have court musicians, and for that, you are thankful. Silence has always been your preferred companion right before bed. That, and a good book.
Your obsession with Valyrian history and traditions had been carefully nurtured by your stepfather, Daemon. Neither your mother nor siblings had much interest in your shared heritage, beyond the ability it gave them to ride dragons.
While Baela and Rhaena spoke fluid High Valyrian, the same could not be said for your brothers. As the only girl in the household, your lessons had been spent with the former and not the latter, forcing you to improve. Once you did, you had found reading the tales of old was a pleasant pastime.
You enjoyed laying in bed and imagining all the stories about magic, dragons, and empresses. When you had turned four and ten, Daemon had gifted you your very own book with Valyrian tales, a beautifully bound and illustrated edition that had followed you in your journey North.
“For you to read to your future children.” He had said, back then. You had barely flowered, so you had laughed. “I mean it, Princess. Out of my three girls, you are the only one I envision doing so.”
The day he had acknowledged you as one of his daughters, even if you didn’t share blood, was the happiest nameday you had had. He was right, too. As much as you loved the twins, you couldn’t picture them being motherly. Baela would have to have a son, to inherit after Jace, but you believed that it would be him who took charge of the more fatherly duties while she dedicated herself to statecraft. Rhaena, instead, had a thirst for adventure, to travel and know the world. Her ambition wasn’t conducive to motherhood either.
You, instead, had always dreamed of marrying a man who loved you and starting a family of your own. You envisioned yourself as the lady of a great keep, where you would rule fairly, and raise your children without wet nurses.
Those dreams had already been shattered. The man you had married didn’t love you. He had only done so to secure an alliance. And the man already had a child of his own, an heir. There was no need for you to be a mother anymore.
You turned another page of your book, watching the beautiful illustrations. You had dreamed of reading this to a little girl who looked like you, or perhaps a boy that would have looked like the man of your dreams. They would have learned High Valyrian, and spoke it as beautifully as your mother and stepfather did.
It would not come to pass. Not any longer.
A soft knock on your door makes you set down your book, closing it with great care. Then, you get up and put on your robe over your sleeping shift.
“You may enter.”
Your husband steps in, dressed for bed already. He is a handsome man, you think, biting your lower lip. Tall, dark and handsome, Cregan is the sort of man your childhood self would have pictured marrying.
He could have been the perfect man to fall in love with, were it not for the fact that he would never love you back. He already loved someone else, someone who you could never aspire to match. His first wife, Lady Arra.
As Alicent had learned, it was impossible to overshadow a ghost. Dead as she was, she could never make mistakes. He would forget all her imperfections.
She gave him a child, she was the wife he chose. The one he married for love, not duty. A practical, northern woman his bannermen had surely liked far more as a match to him than a soft southron princess who didn’t even have a dragon.
“I was wondering if you would welcome my company tonight, Princess.” Your husband says, voice emotionless. He is only here because of duty, it seems. “We could share the bed.”
“You said we could wait to consummate our union.” You keep your voice firm. It is not a task you anticipate eagerly, but you are not afraid of it either. You had seen enough of your mother and Daemon to know bedding someone can be pleasing. It is only the awkwardness of doing so with a stranger that puts you off.
“I was not referring to that.” Your husband says, taking a seat on the edge of the bed. “The nights are cold in Winterfell. Is it wrong for a man to seek closeness to his wife?”
You frown. His behavior is most puzzling. He intends to share your bed… To sleep? Your mother shared her bed with Daemon, but she also bedded him. It makes no sense to you that he wants to sleep next to you without touching you. Most marriages don’t do that. Much less if they are political matches.
“It is not a sin. But why would you..?” You question, but your Lord Husband is getting up already, huffing. He seems angered that you are unable to understand his message, whatever it might be. He storms off, leaving you confused over his behaviour.
That night, Cregan dreams of running. Of having a snout covered in blood, of jumping into the river, trying to trap a seahorse.
He never manages to. Wolves aren’t meant to hunt seahorses.

hmmm I wouldn't call it either regression or "getting worse", because both of those terms feel misleading as to the actual cognitive science of what's happening. Basically, the way learning anything works is that your SKILL and your PERCEPTION are both leveling up, but they're doing so at different rates--and they usually alternate. Skill means... well, skill, your actual ability to execute a task. Perception means your assessment of quality (both yours and your own)--that is, your ability to see what mistakes you're making, your conscious intellectual knowledge of the tools available, etc.
There was a wonderful post going around tumblr many years ago about this which included a graph of this phenomenon, but I have no hope of finding it bc tumblr, so I will describe it: Picture the two intertwining lines that make up a DNA strand. Put it at a 45 degree angle. Label one line Skill, and one Perception.
First, Skill levels up, but Perception is at a plateau. When the Skill line rises higher than the Perception line, you hit the phase of going, "Omg i'm the best writer who has ever lived?????? I'm a genius? Holy shit ME!!!!"
Then Skill plateaus for a bit, and Perception starts catching up. When the two lines intersect, you're at a phase of, "Hey, I'm not the best or worst but I'm learning a lot and I'm having a pretty good time, even when it's kind of hard or tricky! :)"
Then Perception rises past Skill, and you get, "Actually??? This is garbage??? This is true garbage? No one has ever been kind enough to TELL me that it is garbage? How did I suddenly get WORSE? I used to know how to do this!"
Deep breath. You do still know how to do this. You have not LOST anything, you have not gotten worse. It's just that your eyes are sharper and your knowledge and experience are broader, so now you're noticing things that you didn't notice before. It is uncomfortable and it feels disheartening (god, I know it feels disheartening), but this moment is what kickstarts that next big jump in your Skill level so that line starts rising again instead of continuing on a plateau.
"I'm the worst ever" is just as much of an illusion as "I'm the best ever." It just feels more real because the human brain is primed to believe negative things more often than it believes positive things. But in actuality, it is only in that brief split-second when Skill and Perception are intersecting at exactly the same point that we see the truth and achieve a sense of Zen tranquility.
In short: It's gonna be okay. Promise. This is just growing pains. Deep breath, forgive yourself, and keep going.
please please please please reblog if you’re a writer and have at some point felt like your writing is getting worse. I need to know if I’m the only one who’s struggling with these thoughts

look after you
an: this my first x reader fic LMAOO, i needed to write smth and this spencer was on my brain :// i am in the middle of a rly long donna fic but i cba this was much easier. also i absolutley have not proof read this sorry
synopsis: you get hurt while hunting down an unsub, after some reluctance (and kind words from papa rossi) you let spencer take care of you, 1.7k words
cw: descriptions of violence, panic attack, spencer swears and can drive (the most un-canon thing abt him) umm italians..., the rest is just fluffy, hurt/comfort, x reader but no y/n
masterlist
The unsub had his gun pointed at you, the cold press of the barrel against flesh. He was ranting and raving about needing to be seen and understood, having spent his childhood in emotional neglect. Teachers and parents failed him at every turn, it’s not his fault that this happened but he can fix it if he just drops the gun. Rossi tried to tell him this over and over, but he only got more angry, pushing the gun in harder and harder.
If you were to open your eyes, you would’ve seen JJ and Luke there too, guns trained on the unsub. Their eyes glancing between you, the unsub, and the gun. But you didn’t. Not until the bang went off and you could breathe again.
The flashing lights of the ambulance do nothing to dissuade the pressing headache you feel coming on, the movement of people helps even less. You watch as the EMT’s cart the unsub away on a gurney, sheet covering him.
“You okay, kid?” Rossi asks from beside you, he had been hovering ever since the ambulance arrived.
“I’m fine, just need a good night's rest. I’ll be good as new.” You hummed half-heartedly.
David Rossi always knew when someone was lying to him, part of that talent comes from his job as a profiler, but it’s mostly because of some ancient Italian magic. “I’m gonna pretend you didn’t say that to me. Look, Hotch is on his way with Reid and Emily. They’re gonna be taking some witness statements, but I imagine Boy Wonder will be a little distracted. I want you to let him take care of you, ok? You’ve been through hell tonight kid, let him worry.”
Italians never lie, although you wish they did. Spencer had very obviously caught feelings for you, everyone on the team could see it. Unfortunately, so could you. Spencer Reid was one of the kindest, most genuine people you had ever met, always putting other people's needs before his own. A voice in your head kept telling you that there is nothing you have done to deserve someone like him doting all over you? You had only brought trouble to the people who loved you. Eventually you learned that it was better to just keep everyone at a distance; if you don’t let them in, they can’t get hurt. Which worked well, up until Spencer.
He had such a wormy way of getting into your brain at the worst times; whether it was when you were alone in your kitchen, or at slightly dangerous, very inappropriate times on a case. You couldn’t stop thinking about him and his stupidly cute (and sometimes ill-timed) facts. Some part of you wanted to let him in, in the end the stubborn side always took over.
Before long, you heard the worried cries of Spencer trying to find you in the chaos. Rossi called his name and gave you a pat on the shoulder, “Remember, you deserve to be looked after too.” and left to find Hotch.
“Oh my god, are you okay? We tried to get here as soon as we could, but they managed to take down the unsub right? What happened, did he hurt you? How did you get so close? Talk to me are-” Oh, how he rambles.
“Spencer, I’m fine. I just need to… rest, you know. He didn’t hurt me that bad, just a sprained wrist, couple bruises. Could’ve been worse.”
He spluttered, “Could’ve- you know, that doesn’t make this any better, I was so worried about you. He had a fucking gun to your head, I was going insane thinking about what could’ve happened. What did the EMT say about your wrist?”
“Just to rest it, and use an ice pack if it starts to swell or hurt.” You couldn’t look him in the eye, he was so worried about you. It made butterflies dance in your belly, but there was a twinge of guilt there too. He was so busy, he worked so hard and then went home to look after his mom. He had too much on his plate, how could you add more to it? “Spence, I’m really sorry about worrying you. I should be fine to leave now, so I’ll just head home and sleep it off. Have a good night.” You pushed yourself off the ambulance, eyes focused downwards, restless fingers fidgeting with the already frayed bandage.
“No- wait what are you talking about? You’re gonna drive yourself home in this condition? I can’t let you do that, even thinking about it makes me feel sick.” He lowered his head to yours and spoke softer this time, “Please let me take you home. I don’t have to stay, I just want to make sure you’re ok, ok?”
Fuck that voice did things to you. Leaning from side to side, you thought about what Rossi had said earlier. Maybe, it was ok to let someone in? It would be cruel to let him suffer more, not knowing if you were ok or somehow got in a car crash with 5 other vehicles on your way home. Just this once, you think.
Looking up into his soft eyes, you give a small nod. His lips immediately turned up into a smile, his hand comes up to cup your head, fingers stroking your cheek. It felt… nice. His thumb was calloused but he still moisturised enough for it to feel smooth, and he smelled like lemongrass and ginger. His hand fell to the small of your back as he guided you to his car. Ever the gentlemen, he opened your door and softly placed his hand over your head as you got in. Manoeuvring himself into the driver's side, he pulled out his phone and typed something, then quickly stuffed it away into a pocket and turned on the engine.
The sky was dark when you woke up. The unsub had a gun to your head at dusk, and Spencer was walking into your apartment when the moon was out. He took off his shoes and the door, and walked into your living room.
“I’ve never been here before,” he mused. “I like it.”
He looked at ease wandering around your apartment, his shoulders had relaxed and he let out soft musings as he perused your photo collections.
“Oh Spencer, not that one, it’s embarrassing!” You tried (with not a lot of effort) to pull him away from the frame.
“No this is cute, was this when you were at University?” He asked, wrapping an arm around you.
Oh my god. “Yeah, um- those were some of my friends at the time. I try and keep in touch but, you know.”
He hummed, pulling you closer into him. Finally content, he looked down at you. “How’s your wrist?”
“It’s ok,” you shrugged, “just a little tender now.”
“Where’s your kitchen, I can get some ice.”
“Spence-” you wanted to tell him no, to go home and look after himself. But his body was so warm, having him so close to you melted your brain, leaving you unable to think of any good reason as to why he should leave. “It’s the first door on the right.”
His grip tightened for a moment before he swiftly navigated you to the sofa, and turned to leave for the kitchen. The cold of the apartment rushed to get you as soon as he unraveled his arms. You hadn’t been alone all day since the unsubs attack, it somehow felt more claustrophobic. His hand on your throat, squeezing the air from your lungs. The way he grabbed your arm, contorting it so he could throw you to the ground. The gun, pressed into your forehead. The knowledge that the only thing between you being alive, and you being in a ditch, was a madman's finger on the trigger. Reality faded as each memory pressed further and further into your mind. You weren’t in your apartment anymore, you could feel the cold concrete beneath your hands. The thick air in your lungs, Rossi and the unsub shouting.
A hand on your knee, a soft voice bringing you back. There was no unsub, no gun to your head. You were alive. You were alive and Spencer was in your apartment, wiping the tears that had fallen down your face.
“You with me?” His voice was so soft, you couldn’t recall ever hearing Spencer raise his voice in anger. He was so gentle when he touched you.
The floodgates burst, choked sobs made their way past your lips. Your shoulder shook as you cried, pressing yourself into Spencer’s arms. “Oh honey,” He murmured, pressing his lips into your head, softly rocking you back and forth as you sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. It was too much. You could have died today. Very nearly did. You weren’t ready to die, not yet at least.
As your cries softened into hiccups, you pushed yourself back from Spencer. “I’m sorry, that was so disgusting. It just all- I don’t know.”
“Hey, you don’t ever have to apologise to me ok? What you went through was really scary, I’d honestly be more shocked if you didn’t cry.” His hand moved to draw soothing shapes along your back as you leaned back into him. “You want to watch something to calm down? I brought you some water and an ice pack for your wrist.”
He would be the death of you. You nod and push yourself back into the sofa, moving your wrist to rest in your lap. Spencer gently places the ice pack across your wrist and grips the tips of your fingers. He leans forward to push your cup of water towards you and grabs the TV remote, then turns and leans back so your side is pressed into his front. Truthfully, Spencer didn’t seem like the type to watch cable TV but he navigated the menu with somewhat ease.
“Look at what’s on! It’s your favourite isn’t it, you want me to put it on.” He said as he nudged your shoulder.
He remembered your favourite film, of course he would remember it he has an eidetic memory. You hummed a yes as you relaxed your body further into his, finally content. Maybe Rossi was right, having Spencer close really wasn’t so bad after all.

Making Me Crazy
Main Masterlist
Read on A03!
Tags: Soldier Boy/Supe!Female Reader, the tiniest amount of fluff, just pure, raw smut (fingering, oral f!receiving, p in v sex, overstimulation, thigh riding)
Title from Cola by Lana Del Ray.
Summary/Warnings: Request from @little-wicked10! Ben overhears you doubting his generosity in bed, and immediately sets out to prove you wrong.
Author's Note: Top ten horniest things I've ever written. Enjoy!
Word Count: 2.5k
Supes should be required to announce their presence whenever they walk within earshot of other people. If they were, you wouldn’t have snapped at Butcher that, for the last time, you were not sleeping with Ben. You wouldn’t have scowled and hissed that maybe you made come fuck me raw eyes at him, and maybe you liked him as more than a semi-reformed—you’ll call it about 70%, which was a passing grade—supe teammate, but you weren’t going to fuck him, because he was probably selfish in bed, and your lack of self-worth did not extend to falling to your knees only to get nothing in return.
But Ben hadn’t shouted a warning that he could hear you, and now you were gaping at him—standing at the foot of your bed with a cocky smirk—and trying to find a way out of this. Figure out whatever lie you could tell him that would make him just shrug off what he’d heard and walk away.
You weren’t really confident you’d find one.
“We’ve, ah, we’ve been over this, Ben. I’m not having sex with you-“
“Not now.” He waves you off with firm words that shouldn’t be settling that deep in your core. “But you will.”
You narrow your eyes. “You’re awfully confident given I just said no-“
“But you’re going to say yes,” Ben drawls your name, lowering himself down to hold your gaze. “Because I am not a fucking pussy who can’t get a woman off. And I’m going to get you off, over and over until you’re fucking screaming for more, until you’re so fucking cockdrunk you only know my name.”
“Ben-“
He smirks. “Good, you’re already starting-“
“Shut up.” You snap, feeling the heat rise to your cheeks. “I’m not fucking you just because you say you’ll get me off, or so you can proved some sort of point-“
“I don’t have fucking shit to prove.” He shrugs. “And I would get you off, baby. Christ, I’m doing you a damn favor-“
That makes you laugh. “It is not a favor to have sex with me. I could go downstairs, flash my tits at Butcher, and even his ass would jump on me-“
“Butcher couldn’t handle you.” Ben snaps, and you’re suddenly very away of how he’s towering over you, how he’s broad and muscular, how big his hands are, how soft his hair looks, how there’s a bulge in his pants that has to be padded to look bigger-
You swallow, forcing your eyes to his focused, darkened, almost dizzyingly lustful ones. “Ben-“
“I could handle you.” He smirks at you, leaning down until his nose bumps yours, and you can smell his cologne and the whiskey on his breath and something heavier that’s musky and heady and might just be him. “I could fucking ruin you, doll. Make you never want another cock again.”
“Oh.” He must have slipped you something earlier, or there must be a gas leak, because there’s no other explanation for why you nod, lean forward a little further, a little cautiously, and whisper an agreement against his lips. “Okay.”
Then Ben crashes into you, tangling broad fingers in your hair and kissing you with a bruising force that makes your head spin, and you know exactly why you agreed. For this. For Ben, and a chance to taste if he was really that good.
And goddamn him, he was. He was better than good. He was a demanding tongue down your throat and firm hands pulling and rubbing at this skin of your hips and waist. He was a massive, warm body lowering over yours and forcing you to crawl backwards on the mattress.
He was a fucking sex god, and you feel like you’d just committed the worst sin of all. You’d doubted him. And—as his knee shoves between your thighs and you start to see spots when his kiss only deepens—you know you’re about to repent.
And when Ben rips off your shirt and bra in one brutal movement, kisses a sloppy line over your jaw, down your neck, and right to your breasts—kneading with one hand as he pulls your nipple into his mouth—you decide that whatever he demands, you’ll offer. This is already mind-numbing pleasure, and if the only relief he’s offered you is grinding against him and his mouth swallowing every whining moan, you’ll take it.
Then he moves his leg away, chuckles at your needy sound from the loss, and you know he’s onto you. That he’s got you bent to his will.
“Don’t lose your mind yet,” he mutters against your skin, nipping at your breast. “We’ve got a damn long way to go before you can afford that.”
“I’m not, fuck-“
You cut yourself off with a gasp as Ben tears off your pants, teases two fingers over the wet spot on your panties, and shoves them aside to expose your bare pussy to the air.
“You’re fucking wet, doll.” He rises back to your face, kissing and sucking all over your face but your lips, where you’re gaping and gasping his name. “All of this for me?”
“It’s- Ben-“
Your voice turns to a squeak as he spanks your cunt once, running three fingers over your folds as the sting fades to pleasure.
“And don’t fucking think about lying.” He hisses in your ear. “I’ll know.”
You swallow, your voice soft and hoarse. “It’s for you.”
“You think I’m fucking hot?” Ben shoves one finger into your pussy, grunting as you squeeze around him. “Fuck, baby, you want me to make you feel good? Want me to prove to you how fucking wrong you were?”
“God, yes.” You squeeze your eyes shut, arching your back as Ben adds a second finger and begins to pump. “Ben, fuck me, please-“
“Tell me what you want, doll.” He picks up his pace, scissoring and crooking his fingers deep inside you until you’re writhing below him. “Say it, say you want my cock-“
Ben rubs right against that spongey place inside you, dangling over the edge of what you need—what you might die without—and you moan. “Fuck, I want your cock, Ben, I want it so bad-“
“Good girl.” He mutters against your skin, his teeth grazing right at a sensitive spot behind your ear. “But you’re still going to need to fucking earn it.”
You have a brief moment of lucidity where you realize what he’s said, and your eyes fly open. “What the fuck do you mean, I have to- Ben!”
He starts to fingerfuck you at a rapid, almost frantic speed that’s made of lewd sounds, desperate, breathy pleas escaping your lips, and a quickly growing bomb of fire in your gut that’s set to burst so soon-
“Cum of my fingers, doll, fucking soak my hand-“
You scream as the bomb goes off, and you’re overwhelmed with your orgasm. It floods your body and launches you into space, higher, higher, and when you fall easily back down to earth you realize Ben hasn’t stopped. His pace has increased to furious, and you’re already on the edge again. You’d be embarrassed by how quickly you came apart for him—how wrong you were—if Ben was slowing down.
But he’s not. He’s dragging you closer and closer to vaulting back into blinding release, and it’s right on the edge of pain and pleasure. It’s too much, and it’s not enough, and God, you just want him to fuck you-
“Ben,” you gasp, grabbing pointlessly at his wrist. “Fuck, I need you, need you so bad-“
He pulls your lower lip between his teeth, his fingers bending and pressing right against that spongy spot inside of you, and this orgasm is only more powerful. You can barely hear his low, growled promise right in your ear.
“Fucking earn it.”
When you regain your head, your pussy is clenching and fluttering against nothing and strong hands are gripping your waist, maneuvering you with no effort at all. And when your vision returns from a hazy blur, Ben’s below you. Holding you on his lap, your legs tight around his thigh.
You stare at him with wide eyes, and he chuckles, rolling your hips with a firm grip as he starts to bite and suck along your collarbone.
“Fuck yourself on my thigh, baby.” He growls, licking right up your throat like a fucking animal, drawing a high whimper from your lips. “Make yourself cum like the dirty little cockslut you are-“
You start to grind on him like he’s flipped a switch in your body. You’re overwhelmed with orgasms, and your cunt is sensitive and raw, but fuck that’s nothing compared to the sheer want for Ben in your body.
So you throw your all into it. Soaking his jeans with your needy cunt, grabbing at his shirt until he tears it off for you to scratch uselessly at his chest. Fuck, you even put on a show for him. Wiggling and rolling your body in his hold, watching him through lidded eyes, diving to kiss at his neck and drifting a hand down to touch that huge cock, straining in his pants-
“Fuck-“ Ben yanks your hand away, his voice stern and low, and you whine. “I’m not fucking done with you, doll, you need to fucking control yourself-“
You just moan, tugging at his hair in a silent please, and his face falls into one that might be—if you didn’t know better—awe.
“Christ,” he mutters your name, running a rough hand up your back to grip at your throat. “You need to my permission to cum, babydoll?”
Babydoll. That does things to you that you’re past trying to hide.
You’re past trying to hide most everything.
You nod, making a choked plea that’s meant to be Ben, but comes out high and feral, and Ben smirks, gripping your hips until you’re sure he’ll leave a mark.
But his words are low on your skin, and his dick is pressed right on your clit, and God, you hope he marks you. Maybe then you’ll feel like this forever.
“Cum,” Ben growls your name in your ear, and there it is. You scream as you reach another, higher state of euphoria, and you’re so close to just exploding when Ben hauls you up his chest and tosses you down onto your back, rising onto his knees and lowering his face between your thighs.
You don’t get warning when he shoves his face right into your cunt and starts to eat you out like he’s never eaten anything before. Like you’re the sweetest fruit or candy, or saltiest and most carefully crafted meal, or just straight fucking heroin into his bloodstream. He goes down on your with his whole fucking face, pulling your raw, swollen clit between his lips before flicking it with his tongue until you’re a whining frenzy, keeping your thighs split open with his hands and barely flinching as you start to buck and fly off the bed, the orgasms falling through you like rain. One hand even sneaks between your legs, and Ben focuses his sinful mouth on your over-attended clit as his fingers plunge back into your cunt, and you destroy yourself on his everything.
You must have squirted somewhere in there, because when Ben finally rises up his beard is shining with your arousal.
But it might also just be that. This might just be so fucking good, Ben might be so good, that you could flood a desert with how much you need him inside you right now. Really, properly inside you-
Ben must read your mind, because he smirks at you, prowls over your loose and fucked-out body, and drags you into a long, slow, shockingly soft kiss that makes you sigh into his throat, his hand rubbing a comfortingly patten on your waist.
“You’re being such a good girl,” He says your name against your lips, and you think that alone sends another small, shuddering orgasm through your body. “Good girls deserve some cock.”
You make the most needy, lustful noise you’ve ever made in your life, gasp slightly as Ben rises over your body, and scream when his cock slams into your dripping, aching cunt without warning.
“God-“
“I’m not God, babydoll.” Ben’s words are spoken against your lips with a smug satisfaction, and you almost blackout as he rolls his hips. “I’m fucking better. Hold on.”
You obey blindly—spun out and faded on how he’s splitting you open, filling you up more than you’ve ever been filled—and wrap your arms around his neck as he starts to fuck you.
This is heaven. God, you hate how right he was, but you might be ascending. You were already ruined from his hands and mouth, and this is being razed. Fucking decimated. This is Ben’s cock hitting spots inside of you that you didn’t know existed, and his hands grabbing and pulling at your tits, his balls slapping against your skin and his mouth leaving little marks wherever he can reach skin, his fucking fingers rolling your nipples and his thumb rubbing on your raw clit until your mouth falls open, and you cum without sound.
He doesn’t stop. You’re drooling, making high, gasping moans of his name, and completely wrecked under him, but Ben doesn’t slow down. He’s grunting and groaning in your ear, chasing his own release deep into your pussy, and you want him to have it.
He’s really fucking earned it. Especially as his thrusts start to stutter and the bed starts to shake in a way that makes you think it might break, and the low, primal noises that leave him as he comes inside you drag one last, smaller orgasm from deep in your core.
He’s going to brag. When Ben pulls out, you’re sure he’s about to mock and taunt you about being right, but he just sets you down carefully between the sheets, walks into the bathroom, and returns with a damp, warm cloth to clean up the mess he left between your thighs.
Then he looks up at you, and now he’s going to grow cruel. To keep dirty talking or fucking you until you’re in a daze you don’t know how to return from, when you just want to rest. Or maybe he’ll just leave you to deal with the soreness of your pussy and throbbing on your skin from all his biting and sucking, and you’ll never speak of this again.
But he doesn’t do either of those things. Ben’s eyes meet yours, still guarded but not hardened, where you can see deeper into him, and he’s a little more human in there. Like you’d worshipped and repented, and now you get your true reward.
And this is it. Green eyes meet yours, he blinks at you with a frown—like he doesn’t understand what he’s looking at—and then crawls back over you. Ben settles at your side, and your body against his own warm, solid, one. He doesn’t speak, but he touches you carefully, like you might break, and it’s louder.
And you might have had a few other things about him wrong as well.
Because Ben doesn’t move through the night, and you wake up still in his arms.
End Note: Found a way to make it emotional too. Am I even me if I don't?

Forgiveness- Hwang Jun-Ho
Wearning: smut,+18
Request: yes!
The cabin of the ship was steeped in heavy silence, broken only by the sound of waves crashing against the hull. Jun Ho was hunched over his desk, studying a worn and annotated map, his jaw clenched, and his fingers tracing invisible paths toward the island he was so desperately trying to find.
You had entered the room quietly, but he hadn’t even turned around. For weeks, he had been distant, cold, a prisoner of his obsession with that island, and you had had enough.
“Jun Ho,” you called, your voice steady despite the lump tightening your throat. “We need to talk.”
“Not now,” he replied, without even looking up.“No, now,” you insisted, stepping closer. “You’ve been ignoring me for weeks. I see you destroying yourself over this mission, but what are you destroying in the process? Us?”
This time, he lifted his eyes to meet yours, the looks clashing like two waves colliding. “Don’t make this harder, Y/N. I don’t have the time or the energy for these pointless things.”
“Pointless?” you repeated, incredulous. “Really? Is that how you see me? As something pointless?”
Your voice cracked, but you didn’t stop. “You know what? I’m tired, Jun Ho. Tired of feeling invisible. If this is your priority, then maybe there’s no place for me in your life.”
Something shifted in his expression. His eyes darkened, his face contorted into an expression you had never seen before. He stood up abruptly, and before you could process what was happening, his hand rose and struck your cheek.
The slap left you stunned. The sting spread quickly across your skin, but it was nothing compared to the pain that pierced your heart.
Jun Ho froze, his hands trembling as he stared at you with an expression of pure horror. “Y/N…” he stammered, his voice breaking. “I… I didn’t mean to… God, I didn’t mean to…”
You stepped back, pressing a hand to your stinging cheek. You stared at him, heartbroken, unable to find the words.
“Y/N, please,” he begged, stepping closer. “I don’t know what came over me… I was blinded… I’m… I’m a monster.”
“Let me say that,” you hissed, tears filling your eyes. “Do you know what hurts the most, Jun Ho? It’s not this…” you gestured to your reddened cheek. “It’s knowing you lost control to the point of hurting me. That you’ve become someone I don’t even recognize anymore.”
He fell to his knees in front of you, his fists clenched, his eyes brimming with tears. “You’re right. I’m not myself anymore… but I can’t lose you, Y/N. Please, don’t leave me. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
You shook your head, your breath shaky. “This isn’t something you need to say to me, Jun Ho. It’s something you need to say to yourself. You have to figure out who you are and who you want to be. I can’t help you fight your demons if you don’t even want to.”
The silence between you was deafening, broken only by his soft sobs. Finally, you turned and left him there, kneeling on the floor of the cabin, crushed under the weight of his guilt.
Jun-ho came to your cabin with a lost puppy face. "Hey baby" he murmurs softly. You were sitting on your bed, reading a book. At the sound of his voice, you lifted your gaze, and a mix of irritation and relief washed over you. Seeing him now, looking so defeated, the anger that had been burning inside you gradually faded, replaced by a sense of worry.
You set your book aside and turned to face him, folding your arms across your chest. "What do you want?" you asked, your voice flat.He gently walks over to you and sits on your bed. "I'm sorry baby" he whispers repentantly.
Your heart softened a little at his apology, but you didn't show it. "Sorry for what, exactly, Jun Ho?" you asked, continuing to maintain your guarded tone. Jun-ho fidgeted with a loose thread on the bedcovers, avoiding your gaze. "You know what for," he muttered quietly. "For... losing my temper. For... for hitting you."
You look at him carefully, sighing and not saying a word.He dared to lift his eyes to meet yours, and in that moment, you could see a mix of shame, regret, and fear in his gaze. He knew he had messed up, but he was also terrified of losing you.
He shifted awkwardly on the bed, his hands clenching and unclenching nervously. "I don't know what came over me," he continued, his voice barely above a whisper. "I was just so frustrated... and angry... and... I lost control."
You gently take his hand. "You need to unplug a bit, soon you won't even sleep anymore to find this damned island" you say softly tracing small relaxing circles on the palm of his hand.
A wave of relief washed over him as you took his hand, gently tracing calming circles on his palm. The touch of your fingertips was like a soothing balm, helping to unravel the knots of tension he'd been carrying within him.
Jun-Ho looked down at your hand on his, his expression riddled with guilt and vulnerability. "I know," he murmured, his voice slightly shaky. "But I can't just... stop. This island... it's all I think about. It's like an obsession."
You look at him softly and make him lie down by placing you on top of him and massaging his shoulders. "Love, I didn't say you had to stop, just a fear to relax" you say softly.
He let out a soft sigh as you pushed him gently to lie down, his body relaxing into the mattress. The massage that followed felt like a release, easing some of the tension that had built up in his shoulders. His eyes closed, and he allowed himself to relish in the touch of your hands on his body. "I... I don't know if I know how to relax anymore," he confessed, his voice so low it was barely audible.
You gently lower your face and kiss his neck softly. “I know how to make you relax love” he says softly and with a bit of seduction in his voice as you lick his neck.
He shivered under your touch, a mixture of pleasure and tension coursing through his body. The sensation of your tongue against his skin sent a jolt of electricity through him, igniting a familiar heat. Jun-Ho opened his eyes, his gaze darkened with a mix of yearning and vulnerability. "Y/N," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "If you keep this up, I won't be able to hold back..."
You smile at his words and nibble on his neck. “Good to know, love,” you say and grab his face to kiss him passionately. As your lips met in a fierce, passionate kiss, all the pent-up frustration and tension within him broke free. With a low growl, he wrapped his arms around you, pulling you closer. He deepened the kiss, his tongue tangling with yours in a desperate, hungry dance. His hands roamed over your body, gripping you tightly, as if trying to assure himself that you were really there, that you hadn't left him yet.
The room seemed to disappear as your bodies moved together in a heated frenzy. His hands moved with a sense of urgency, tugging at your clothes, needing to feel your skin against his.He broke the kiss, his breathing ragged, and trailed his lips down your neck. "Y/N," he gasped, his voice husky with desire. "I... I need you. I need you so much, it's driving me insane."
You smile at his words and nip at his jaw playfully. “It's okay love, remember that you have to make it up to me and this is your time” you tease, nipping at his neck.
He groaned at the mixture of pleasure and frustration. Your words and the feel of your teeth against his skin sent a thrill through him, but he also knew you were right.Jun-Ho placed his hands on your hips, gripping them firmly as he rolled over, switching positions. With a low rumble, he trapped you underneath his body, his eyes dark and burning.
"You're right," he grumbled, his voice filled with a combination of excitement and determination. "And I intend to make it up to you, in every single way."You smile at his words.
His lips found your neck again, and he started a trail of kisses down your throat, each one lingering a bit longer than the previous. His hands roamed over your body, exploring, caressing every curve, every inch of skin he could reach. He pushed the hem of your shirt up, his fingers tracing patterns across your stomach, leaving goosebumps in their wake. He gently bit the sensitive skin of your hip, his tongue soothing the pain away immediately after.
His lips returned to yours in a searing kiss, possessive and tender at the same time. He moved against you, grinding his hips into yours, creating a delicious friction that only fueled the flames of desire between you. With each movement, he communicated his need for you, his desperation to make things right. He tugged at your shirt again, his voice hoarse as he pleaded, "Take it off. Let me see you."
As your shirt slipped off, he took a moment to just look at you, his eyes roaming over your bare skin with an expression of reverence. "You're so beautiful," he whispered, his words a low, husky confession. His fingers traced over the curves of your body, mapping out every contour, his touch gentle yet tinged with a hint of possessiveness. He leaned down to place small, soft kisses along the path his hands had just taken.
He lingered over your stomach, his teeth lightly grazing your skin, his tongue tracing lazy circles. He could feel the shiver that rippled through your body at his touch, and it only fueled his own need. His hands moved to your hips, his grip firm but not painful. He leaned down and whispered against your ear, his voice rough and filled with desire. "I need you. Now."
His thumbs hooked into the waistband of your pants, and he gently started to pull them down, his eyes never leaving yours. He watched the excitement mixed with anticipation on your face, and he felt his own body react to it, his heart pounding, every muscle in his body taut with need.He continued to remove your pants, his movements slow and deliberate. Each new inch of skin revealed was like a revelation, and his hands seemed to trace a path of fire as they explored your now-exposed legs.Jun-ho knelt between your thighs, his hands resting on your hips, holding you in place. His gaze traveled up your body, his eyes filled with a possessive intensity that matched the primal need coursing through him.
He looked ready to devour you, the heat in his eyes matched by the rough edge to his voice."You're mine," he growled, his thumbs digging into your hips. "Every single part of you." Jun-ho leaned down, his lips barely touching your skin, sending another shiver through you. "And I'm going to show you exactly how much I need you, Y/N."
“Yes please” you murmur softly looking at him.He started a slow, torturous journey with his lips, trailing kisses along the inside of your thighs, moving closer to the place where you ached for him the most.
As he continued, he could feel your body responding to his touch, your breath becoming increasingly ragged, your hands clenching into the sheets. It was a dance of desire and power, and he was the master, knowing exactly how to make you tremble, how to bring you to the edge.
He chuckled softly at your gasps and moans, his breath hot against your skin. "You taste so good," he murmured, his voice filled with a mixture of pleasure and dominance. As he continued his slow, torturous assault, he knew he was driving you to the brink of madness. He wanted you to feel how much he needed you, how much he craved every inch of your body.
"Baby plaese" you murmured.Your words were like a plea, a desperate plea, and he couldn't resist it any longer. The sound of your voice, pleading and needy, was like a drug to him.
He lifted his head slightly, his gaze locking with yours. "Please what, love?" he asked, his voice thick with desire.
“I want more” you whisper longingly. He smiled slightly at your words, his eyes darkening with even more desire. He liked it when you pleaded, when you admitted how much you wanted him.
Jun-Ho shifted his position, moving up and pressing his body against yours, trapping you beneath him. "More, you say? What exactly do you want, love? I need to hear you say it."
“I want you to fuck me,” you whispered longingly as you gripped his shirt. His chest rumbled as a low, guttural moan escaped his lips at your words. His grip on you tightened, his fingers digging into your skin, leaving marks that would be evidence of his desire.
"As you wish, love," he growled in your ear. "But first, I have a request."You look at him carefully waiting for him to speak.
He paused, his gaze locked on yours, his breathing ragged. You could see the heat in his eyes, the desire burning within him.Jun-Ho lifted a hand to gently caress your cheek, his touch reverent as his voice dropped to a whisper. "I need to hear you say my name, love. When you're calling out, I need you to know who you belong to."
“I belong to you and only you Jun-Ho” you whisper softly caressing his chest. His breath hitched at your words, and a rush of possessiveness washed over him. The sound of his name on your lips, coupled with your declaration of belonging to him, sent a primal thrill through his body.
He leaned down and captured your lips in a fierce, passionate kiss, his tongue delving into your mouth, tasting and claiming you. He wanted to imprint himself on you, to make sure you knew that you were his and no one else’s.
You moaned into the kiss as you eagerly unbuttoned his jeans. His breath came in sharp, uneven gasps as your fingers worked on the buttons of his jeans. The feel of your hands against his skin, the way your body responded to his touch, it was enough to drive him wild.
He broke the kiss, his forehead resting against yours, his eyes darkened with a mix of desire and admiration. "You're impatient tonight, aren't you, love?" he teased between heavy breaths.
You nibble on his neck. "please baby, I want you inside me. It's been too long" you murmur longingly into his neck. His breath hitched as your lips found his neck, and he let out a guttural moan. He couldn't deny the truth in your words; it had been a long time since he'd been able to be close to you like this.
Jun-Ho tangled one hand in your hair, pulling you closer, his voice a low, hoarse rumble in your ear. "You're right, love," he murmured, his mouth against your skin. "It has been too long. I need you just as badly."
He kissed your neck, then gently pushed you down onto the bed, hovering above you. His hands ran over your body, his touch both tender and possessive, his restraint hanging by a thread."I've missed touching you so much," he breathed against your skin. "Feeling you underneath me. Hearing the sounds you make."
You moan and arch into him. “please baby, come inside me, I need it” you murmur, taking off his boxers. The sound of your pleading words and the feel of your body arching into him was almost too much to bear. His control was slipping, his desire taking over.
With a low, hoarse murmur he complied with your request, discarding his boxers completely. He positioned himself between your legs, his breaths coming in harsh, ragged gasps."You drive me completely wild, love," he growled, his voice rough with need. "I can't resist when you make those sounds, when you're begging me like that. It's what I need too.
You moan and move with him as you place your lips on him kissing him. “Always soo deep” you murmur moaning between kisses. He groaned as you wrapped around him, pulling him deeper into your heat. His mind was drowning in a sea of pleasure, every nerve in his body on fire as he moved with you.
With every kiss, every touch, he lost more control, the desire pulsating between you two becoming more intense. He couldn’t get enough of you, of how you made him feel, of how you made him want you even more.“You feel so good, love,” he growled against your lips, his voice ragged and filled with need.
You moan feeling him increase his thrusts. He pressed deeper into you, each thrust a little rougher, his need for you increasing with every passing moment. He moved against you, a primal rhythm taking over, his breath coming in labored gasps against your skin.He could feel every part of you, every contour and curve, and it was driving him crazy. His hands roamed over your body, his touch becoming more urgent, trying to get as close to you as possible.
"You're incredible," he breathed, his voice thick with desire. "You make me feel things I've never felt before, and I can't get enough of you."
His head dropped down to your shoulder, his breath hot against your skin as he continued to move with you. He was close, so close to losing himself completely. He lifted his head up slightly, his eyes finding yours, his gaze burning into you. "I don't ever want this to end," he whispered, his voice rough and filled with a raw honesty. "Just me and you, like this, forever."
You nod and kiss him again. Jun-Ho's thrusts became more and more animalistic, bringing both of them to the limit. The kiss between you was intense and frenzied, a testament to the need you both felt for one another. Every breath, every touch, was filled with a raw, primal desire.
His thrusts became more urgent, his control completely shattered now. He was lost in the feel of you, in the sound of your breathless moans and the way you gripped him, pulling him deeper into you."I can't hold on much longer, love," he managed to gasp out between harsh breaths. "You feel too good".
You moan at his words and nip at his neck. “Baby, I'm about to come,” you murmur. His breaths against your skin grew more ragged, his movements more erratic. He was on the edge, his whole body coiled tight like a spring, ready to snap.
The sound of your voice, the words you spoke, pushed him even closer to the brink. “That's it, love,” he grunted against your neck, his voice rough and needy. “Come for me. I need to feel you."
You moan feeling his thrusts getting harder and harder, drilling inside you and you came screaming his name. You bit his shoulder to keep from screaming too much.
Your scream of ecstasy and the feel of your teeth on his skin sent him over the edge. He was completely undone, his control shattered. He shuddered against you, his body tensing as his own release overtook him. He groaned loudly, his fingers digging into your hips, holding you tightly against him.
For a few moments, the only sound in the room was the ragged breaths you both tried to regain control of. He collapsed next to you, pulling you tightly into his arms, his head resting on your chest."You drive me absolutely wild," he murmured against your skin, still trying to catch his breath.
You smiled as you tried to catch your breath and hugged him softly while he was still buried inside you. "Are you feeling better?" You whisper softly.
He leaned into your touch, his body still humming with the aftermath of pleasure. He couldn’t help but smile at your question, the simple words having so much meaning behind them. Jun-ho pulled you closer, his arms wrapping tighter around you as he rested his head against your chest. "I think feeling better is an understatement," he replied, his voice still slightly breathless.
He paused, then added, "But being here, like this, with you...it's exactly what I needed."You smile softly at his words and kiss his jaw. "I love you".
He closed his eyes, his smile growing wider as you kissed his jaw. The feel of your lips on his skin, the sound of your voice, it filled him with a profound sense of contentment and peace."I love you too," he replied, the words leaving his lips easily and wholeheartedly. "More than anything in this world."
I smiled and hugged him even tighter. You stayed snuggled up all night ignoring for once the problems around you.

Also notable: I rarely see anyone say this about, like, romance movies (at least in earnest; there are soooo many other discourses about romance as a genre, but this isn't one I've seen).
Nobody says "noooo, don't go into the quaint little small-town café, Miss New York Businesswoman Protagonist! No, you're so goddamned dumb for talking to the guy who literally collided with you walking in the door!! You're so effing stupid for allowing him to pick up the papers you dropped!
Nobody says "Character is ridiculous for not trying to avoid freezing to death by huddling for warmth in the cabin!"
Nobody says "but they should know better!" about romance plots, unless it's some "love thine enemy" thing where logically the character should know better than to fall in love with the tragic, handsome villain who just tried to have them killed/kidnapped/dethroned/etc., but even then. The characters in a romance plot don't somehow miraculously know they're in a romance, they just know that they've encountered a [charming stranger] [mysterious rival] [new understanding of their childhood bestie] [any and all trope pairings that apply] and that, as they go about their day, Shit Happens. Compared to other genres it might be comparably low-stakes because nobody's in danger of getting stabbed (maybe, who knows, it could happen), but they don't posses foreknowledge of the events because they're not aware that this sequence of events is something like "A Duke for the Holidays" instead of "just another goddamned Tuesday".
We know.
We're supposed to know.
While part of me rails against an easy reliance on trope marketing, primarily when it supersedes any and all notions of telling me what the gods-damned book is about, as an audience we are, consciously or otherwise, aware of tropes and trends and patterns. We know, as the audience, that in a small-town romance film Miss New York Businesswoman Protagonist is going to break up with her boyfriend who never has time for her and shack up with the hunky father of two who works as a conservationist for a near-extinct, totally-not-made-up species of butterfly that only reproduces every six years under the light of a falling star, or something*. That's how the plot works.
Half the fun is figuring out how it happens.
Half the scare is figuring out how it happens, because horror, like romance, has a pretty defined end (though it isn't always death, but that's pretty clear from the beginning when that's the case).
I'm a spec-fic author. I'm working on a gothic sci-horror novel that, in its alpha stages, has scared the bejesus out of my reader to the point where she thinks the monster is going to appear in her house. She keeps feeling like she's being watched. We're 2/3 of the way through and she's paranoid to the point where she can't actually read the thing for long stretches of time even if she desperately wants to. I also write fantasy, and there are tropes and expectations that I rely on there, as well. But gods, I'm so tired of people (beyond the half-terror under a blanket "no, don't go in there!!!" response, without acknowledging that it must happen) not applying the same logic to horror protagonists as they do to those of other genres. They're not dumb.
Horror isn't dumb.
It's profoundly, utterly human in its terror.
And to the main point of the post: nothing Jonathan Sims (Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, London) could have done would have averted the ending to his story. He's a brilliant mind cracking under strain, attempting to wrangle forces well beyond human comprehension that prey on his being a brilliant mind attempting to wrangle them. The Entities, on occasion, give him what he wants. He learns. He grows.
Until he becomes a monster himself.
There are so many versions of the story, littered with alternate choices and voltas and changes in patterns. "No" instead of "yes" that eventually becomes "yes", anyway, because it has to.
A big-city businesswoman, visiting her aging father for Christmas, walks into a coffee shop and runs headlong into her widowed highschool sweetheart after years away.
A gallant knight, stripped of his armour, raises a sword to protect the princess and slay the dragon.
A PI cracks a cold-case that's been haunting the local police for years after they stumble on new evidence, almost by accident.
Almost by a miracle.
A brave starship captain lays down their life to save an entire planet, millions of lives, because it is right, and at the last second is retrieved by advanced technology created by a society that cares.
Jonathan Sims does the best he can with the information he has, and he almost makes it out in the end.
Until he doesn't.
There is no other version of the story.
----
*I was being mostly facetious in this claim but a part of me actually really wants a low-stakes cozy romantasy in this setting. I can't write that type of stake to save my life (even my fanfiction has to have something life-threatening, so no butterflies for me) so if that prompt strikes your fancy, feel free to steal it and modify however needed. Just... let me know if you ever finish it.

"Your girl" - Part 1 | The Salesman x Reader
Summary: After getting attacked at the train station, you get rescued by a mysterious stranger. But is that really better?
Warnings: dead dove do not eat, kidnapping, attempted rape, violence, murder, hints of blood and gore, trauma talk
He was a twisted motherfucker. And you knew it was your own fault you ended up in his claws. But how could you have possibly known? After all, at first he seemed like the good guy.
Looking back, it was entirely lost on you, how he managed to pull that off.
You remembered vividly how it felt when you sat on the cold bench in the waiting area of the underground train station, just like you did every evening of your life. Except for Sundays. Sundays were reserved for books and tv shows, to numb out your mind. Sundays were for you.
Your thoughts had been occupied with work and the feeling of your lower body slowly freezing off.
UTI, honey. You'll get UTI, if you sit on cold surfaces for too long. Your mothers voice took up a lot of space in your head, despite the fact that the last time you saw her was years ago. It still made you feel uneasy, but there was not much you could do. She was your mother, your inner voice, your compass. The part of your mind that still relied on her advice didn't know that she was long gone from your life and for a reason.
The first thing you noticed was a pair of cold hands reaching for you. Everything seemed to be cold that day. And God, you hated the cold.
His cold hands reached for you and before you even realized it, he had you pinned against the bench, trapped in-between him and the cold surface. You didn't have time to react at all. His one cold hand went up to cover your mouth, while his other cold hand cupped your breast through the fabric of your clothes.
Of course you struggled. It was a reflex. You tried to fight him off as soon as you realized what was going on. You struggled and squirmed, at some point you even tried to knee him in the crotch. But he straddled your waist, keeping you down with his weight and you knew where this was leading.
You hadn't even seen his face. His ugly ass blue hat with the dove on top was pulled down deep in his face and you couldn't make out his eyes. Not that it would have changed anything, but it made everything even worse for you.
But what was by far the worst thing, wasn't the cold. It wasn't even the fact that the station was empty except for the two of you. The worst thing was that no sound came out when you opened your mouth to scream. No sound at all.
Oh, how you had feared that. The dream came often, frequently even and it was a shitty feeling every time, wanting to scream but no sound came out. Your throat was tight, your tongue useless, your lips parted in a silent plea.
No.
This was the end, you were sure.
He'd violate you and if you were lucky, he'd leave you like that, on the cold bench, to fend for yourself. But that wasn't your biggest fear. Your biggest fear was what would happen if he didn't decide to leave you like that.
Maybe it'd be quick. A blade to your throat and within a few minutes everything would finally be over.
But what if not?
A knot built in your stomach as you saw your future right infront of you. Sold off to some twisted people, spending the rest of your life as a tool for someone else's pleasure, someones amusement, someones-
No, being violated wasn't your worst fear.
Being sold off was.
At some point people would believe you were dead and then they'd stop searching.
Tears streamed down your face and your body shook with suppressed sobs as he ripped at your shirt impatiently. Your lips parted in another desperate plea, but still, no sound.
You were done for. This was your end. You couldn't breathe.
Until, suddenly, you could again.
You let out a shuddery gasp when you felt his weight lift off of you. You were frozen solid after you backed away against the wall.
The man appeared out of nowhere, looking like someone from a novel or a movie.
His hair, which looked like it was normally slicked back neatly, hung into his face as he dragged the man off you, his expression twisted into something you couldn't read.
You took a deep breath. In. And out. In. And out.
You were safe. The police would come, the man would get arrested and he wouldn't ever touch you again. You would finally see his eyes and-
Oh God.
You winced outwardly when you heard the cracking sound and the man with the blue hat went limp in his arms. His unreadable expression turned into something resembling smugness.
You watched in horror as he tossed the lifeless body onto the train line. The train came on time. Of course it did. Punctuality was a good deed, especially here in South Korea.
What you witnessed then was probably the most gruesome scene of your life and you immediately knew you would never get that picture out of your head.
The sound of a gunshot forced you back to reality and you winced painfully. When you looked up, you saw him still pointing his gun at the security camera in the left corner of the area. On his face a subtle smile. The twisted smile of an avenging angel...or an obvious demon.
He pushed the gun back beneath his waistline and held out his hand to you.
The man who had almost destroyed your life was dead, scattered across the train station in blood and gore and the man who would undoubtedly destroy your life held out his hand to you.
You heard your mothers voice again, small and subtle.
Don't take his hand, honey. Something's most definitely wrong with him. I bet he's dangerous.
That was what made you take his hand in the end. However bad he was, he couldn't possibly be worse than her, could he?
A few minutes later, he made a point of passing about every car on the highway.
"Where do you live?" His voice was like silk. It was terrifying.
After what had happened, you felt like you had stopped breathing for a while and just now were you slowly getting back to it again.
No ins and outs. Straight up hyperventilating.
"I- I don't know." You gasped out truthfully.
He cocked a brow and briefly glanced at you from the drivers seat.
"You don't know?"
You frantically shook your head.
"I always take the same path. From the train station, take a turn left and- and-"
"Where are you from, sweet girl?" His voice sounded so calm, as sweet as honey. It was almost offensive, it was infuriating.
"Yorkshire." You whispered without missing a beat.
He hummed softly and briefly eyed you up and down. "England, hm? I should have recognized from your grace and beauty."
Was he fucking flirting with you? After he just...just murdered someone?
"What takes you to South Korea then? School? Uni?"
"Work." You murmured, not even recognizing your own voice. But at least by now it was back. Fucking betrayed by your own body, wonderful.
He raised his brows as he passed another car in a nerve-wrecking speed.
"Work? You look a little young to be that far from home, working here. Do you even speak the language?"
You subtly shook your head and he nodded.
"I work with...with computers." You mumbled absentmindedly. In your head, the scene from earlier kept repeating like a broken record. All that blood...
He hummed again. An odd sound. He radiated such a calm energy, it was truly confusing.
"You were awfully quiet earlier." He remarked.
You swallowed back the lump in your throat and looked out of the window.
"Ah. Sore spot. I get it."
At first you had thought he might be taking you to the police station. But then you realized; after he just butchered someone down without flinching? Probably not.
Still, you had hope. That was until you saw the city sign disappear in the rear view mirror. This wasn't good. Maybe for once you should have listened to your mothers voice.
"Where are you taking me?" You asked quietly.
He didn't respond, just kept his gaze firmly on the highway before you. You kept glancing at him for a while, before eventually you looked down at your hands. You hadn't even realized how much they were shaking. You wanted to ask many, many questions.
Who the hell are you?
Where are we going?
Why did you kill that man?
...Am I next?
But all you managed was a quiet, desperate exhale.
"Are you hungry?" He asked matter-of-factly.
You thought back to the massacre and immediately felt nauseous again, so you shook your head.
"Yes, you are. You need to keep your strength. Don't worry, sweet girl. We'll be home soon. I'll take good care of you."
The cold sweat that broke out on your body was nearly painful. You knew he wasn't normal, but you couldn't yet tell to which extent he was crazy.
Was he just a little twisted?
He was a killer after all. And now you were with him. In his car. Maybe, just maybe you could...
You glanced down at the doorhandle, when his calm voice made you jump.
"Don't even think about it, sweet girl. That won't work. I'm driving so fast, the second your body hits the pavement, your head will explode like a balloon."
The was that tightness in your throat again. But this time something was different. He had his hands on the steering wheel, not on you. You could still breathe.
Suddenly you saw yourself again, sold off. And damn it, suddenly exploding didn't sound so bad anymore.
You furiously tugged on the door handle, but it didn't work. It was locked. You kept trying it desperately, a soft passing your lips. After a few moments you realized it was pointless.
Slowly you tilted your face back towards him, only to realize he was already watching you. He was still smiling that subtle, not at all genuine, smile, but this time something was different. It was like a cold fury had taken possession of his eyes.
Maybe he wasn't a demon. Maybe he was the devil.
"That one was free. Because we don't know each other all too well yet." He said slowly. "But next time, I won't be so forgiving."
You looked back at the street ahead of you. And suddenly you realized something. Maybe he was worse than your mother.
God, what a terrifying thought.
About half an hour later, there you were. Home.
A great apartment complex, somewhere God knows where.
Suddenly it hit you. He hadn't covered your eyes. Not in the car, not infront of the house, not in the elevator.
You weren't leaving this place, at least not alive.
He led you inside one of the apartments. To your surprise, everything looked pretty normal, except for the part that it looked fairly expensive.
The walls were painted in a warm apricot color and the floor was made of dark wood.
He led you deeper inside and you realized, it was indeed a normal flat. The couch was made of black leather and there was a giant bookshelf, next to a big tv. For some reason the sight of the bookshelf brought you an odd sense of comfort.
How bad could a person be, if he was well-read?
Your mind soon wandered off to Hannibal Lecter and you dismissed the thought.
"Sit."
You sat down on the couch as instructed. All the while you were careful to keep your shoes off the cream colored carpet so you wouldn't get it dirty. It was odd how your mind worked.
He followed your gaze, his expression unreadable again.
Then he crouched down before you, so you were eye level with him. His eyes were of a pretty brown and soulless to the core. You shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. He sized you up for a while, until eventually he sighed. An exaggerated, mocking sound.
"How do you like it here?"
Your insides twisted.
"It's pretty." You said in a choked whisper.
He laughed, a hearty, yet sarcastic sound.
"Look at you. Just look at you. Being my good girl already." He said slowly.
He leaned in so close that his breath tickled your ear. You forced yourself to stay still.
"The door can be opened only by me. The same goes for all windows. All the walls are soundproof. There's no way you can get out, until I want you to. Do you understand?" For the first time, his voice was low and you could grasp the subtle threat. He didn't pretend to be cheerful for once.
Or was it truly pretense?
You forced yourself to nod.
And just like that, his twisted smirk was back.
"Very well." He swiftly stood up. "What would you like for dinner?"
You slowly tilted up your head to read his expression. Read his intention. Read his character or the lack of it. But there was nothing. Nothing for you understandable, nothing that made any kind of sense.
"I'm not hungry." You whispered.
He pretended to pout, but eventually held out his hand to you again. A bittersweet deja-vu. As much as you wanted to refrain from taking it this time, you were far more afraid of what would happen if you refused him.
You hesitantly took his hand and he pulled you up to your feet.
"Maybe a nice, hot shower then?" He purred.
Of course. This time, it wouldn't be a faceless man with a blue hat to violate you, it would be him. The devil himself. You could already feel it, smell it and taste it. In the shower, on the bed, the kitchen counter, the floor and against the wall, until he grew tired of you.
That was why you were there. That had to be.
Before you could react, he had led you back to a spacious bathroom. Everything looked ridiculously clean and expensive. The freestanding tub was sparkling and the fluffy towels begging to dry you off.
He'd bend you over the tub. Maybe push your head under water. You knew he would. Just a minute more.
Instead, he gently ushered you inside.
"I'll get you something clean to sleep in." He said matter-of-factly. "I'll leave it infront of the door. Take as much time as you need."
With that, he disappeared and closed the door behind him. Your eyes widened almost comically. You then rushed forward to lock the door, which worked with ease. Next, the window. You tugged on the handle, desperate to open it. Not that it would have made any sense, you were too high above the street. But the thought of opening the window still filled you with hope. Like maybe, at least there would be one way out.
When nothing worked, you tried to break the glass. But you quickly noticed it was no normal glass. He hadn't lied. The windows provided no way out.
You slumped down below the sink and cried for a while. To no great surprise of yours, your tears ran dry quickly and you just sat in silence for a while.
You were trapped.
And you had no idea what you were here for.
After what felt like half an hour, you got up with shaky legs and decided to check if the door was truly locked. It was. You unlocked it and perked your head out, only to realize he had left you a bathrobe outside, as well as slippers and a nightdress. It was pretty basic, made of cotton. But it wasn't revealing or anything. The thought was oddly comforting. You picked up the clothes and disappeared back into the room, where you locked the door and sighed.
Your eyes settled on the tub and you thought, why the hell not?
You made quick process of it. You got rid of your sweat-soaked clothes and stepped into the tub. The water filled up the tub rather quickly. At least the warmth of it provided some kind of comfort. You poured some scented lavender oil in and sunk deeper down.
You didn't dare close your eyes though. You were still sure he would come and take what he wanted. Mayhe he just wanted you to be clean first? He would come. He surely would.
But he didn't. Minutes passed, another half an hour. And he didn't come. You rinsed off and stepped out of the tub. The giant, fluffy towels felt heavenly against your skin. It was almost like you were in a hotel. Except for the murder and abduction part.
You slipped into the nightdress and the slippers and towel dried your long hair. Then you folded the towel neatly and placed it on the radiator. After a few long, deep breaths you carefully stepped outside. The cold air brought you back to reality as you followed back the same path he had led you earlier. You were surprised to find the living room empty, but you heard rustling sounds from the kitchen.
And then your gaze settled on the door.
It were less than five steps. You could make it. You could. If you were quick and took off the slippers, you could stealthily...
"Sweet girl?" That fake sweetness again, with the hint of underlying warning to it. You swallowed thickly and looked up. He stood in the doorway and looked at you with something resembling a warm smile.
"How was your bath?"
You stood frozen. Five small steps. If you thudded against the door loud enough, maybe someone might hear. Alert the police. Rescue-
"I asked you a question."
"Good." You whispered. And involuntarily added: "Thank you."
Good girl, purred your mothers voice.
But all he did was smile.
"Come, I made dinner. Just a few bites."
Your mind drifted back to Hannibal Lecter and you nearly spat. A careful glance into the kitchen and...
Pancakes. You gasped in relief.
He tilted his head to the side, smiling softly.
"You don't like pancakes?"
"I do." You whispered involuntarily.
They might be poisoned, but the fact that you hadn't eaten anything since lunch at work got the better of you. He slowly guided you into the kitchen and sat you down on one of the chairs, before he sat down opposite you.
He caught you staring down at the food suspiciously, which made him chuckle.
"They're not poisoned."
When you still didn't move, he rolled his eyes and took a bite off your fork. He chewed and swallowed with a smug expression.
"See?"
You reluctantly moved. They weren't bad. Pretty good even. You chewed carefully and never took your eyes off him. He did the same. And he still looked so unbelievably calm.
After you finished eating and downed a glass of water, you stared at him...expectantly.
His smirk widened.
"A curious little bird, aren't you?"
He narrowed his eyes somewhat and reached out to touch your cheek. "You cried."
To your surprise, when you flinched, he pulled his hand back and hummed softly.
"No need to cry, sweet girl. I'll take care of you. All you have to do is agree."
You already regretted asking. "Agree to what?"
He leaned back and bared his teeth in a predatory smile.
"Being mine."
Your brows furrowed in confusion and straight up stress. The calming effects of the bath were slowly fading away.
"What?"
"Mine, sweet girl. My girl."
"Your girl?" You asked somewhat incredulously, which was something he didn't seem to appreciate.
He reached out and cupped your face in his hand, his grip firm, but not painful. Yet. Your heart immediately skipped several beats.
"Oh, you will agree, sweet girl. The question is, will you agree willingly? Or do I have to make you?" He narrowed his eyes even further.
"Who are you, sweet girl?"
You stared up at him with wide, fearful eyes. Something told you that there was no right answer to that question.
And then, in a rare fit of courage, you said your name.
He took a long, deep breath and slowly dropped his hand from your chin.
"That's very tragic, sweet girl."
With a disapproving tsk he shook his head.
"Unfortunately, that was the wrong answer."

Thinking about Pre-Death Best Friend!Reader x Red Hood!Jason Todd who craves the intimate personal connection and affection he once had with you but is so terrified of letting people in that he watches from the sidelines to make sure you’re okay. All he wants is you to be happy.
Jason Todd who hasn’t tried to see you since he came back. He’s seen his family, albeit mostly reluctantly, but he can’t bring himself to insert himself back into your life. Not the way he is now. You won’t want him the way he is now.
Jason Todd who made your apartment a key feature of his patrolling route, your workplace too. You still sometimes walk home alone at night despite how often he told you not to back in his Robin days. You’re just as stubborn as ever and though he worries for your safety, the sense of familiarity it gives him provides a semblance of comfort when everything about him feels so unbelievably wrong now.
Jason Todd who had to try and hide in the small bookstore you both frequent recently. It’s quaint, cozy and feels like taking a step outside of Gotham every time he visits. Something so homey doesn’t belong in this city. Though he supposes it makes sense that you would be here, you feel just as much like home to him. He’s too big to hide behind the shelves standing, so he finds himself crouching, pretending to be looking intently for a novel on the bottom shelf of the classics section. He hasn’t moved an inch since he heard the bell chime, and your voice carry through the space as you shook your damp umbrella off on the doormat. He listens to you chat with the young kid working the counter, picking up a special cloth-bound edition of Pride and Prejudice you’d ordered earlier in the week. It makes him smile, you’d always said you hated classics, that they were boring, until you’d both laid down under the big oak tree that sat on the edge of Wayne Manor’s grounds and let him read it to you. He remembers the sunshine, dappled, and filtering through the leaves. He remembers the way the light kissed your face. How he wished he could do the same. Even then. But he was afraid. Too afraid to risk losing your friendship, the only real one he’d ever had. He’s still too afraid. He supposes not everything about him has changed.
Jason Todd who has accidentally (he thinks, maybe, mostly) started to run into you as Red Hood. Softly knocking on the window from your fire escape. Behaviour uncharacteristic of ‘Red Hood the vigilante’ as you knew him, supposedly gruff and imposing. Asking quietly to monitor an ongoing situation from your fire escape. It really was the best vantage point. Some goon posted himself in the shady alley between buildings, selling drugs to local kids and he needed to make sure he wouldn’t come back again after Hood had put the fear of god in him the night previous. He tries to tell himself that the roof would have obstructed his view too much. If you don’t know about Jason he can’t hurt you so this is okay. You of course say yes. You’ve heard what people have to say about Red Hood, adults and the elite who spit his name with vitriol, but you’ve also seen the kids on the street who excitedly wait for their daily high five from the masked man. You know who you believe. You bring him a bottle of water halfway through the stakeout, you shrug lightly in response to his thank you and return to reading on the couch. Window open, sheer curtains blowing softly in the light breeze. He can’t remember a time he felt so calm.

espresso | j.p
james potter x sunshine!reader
summary: james sees you at a cafe, and is enamoured by your brightness. you pay for his drink, and he can't help falling in love.
cw: fluff
James Potter could count the number of times he’d been told he was bright with both hands – what a ray of sunshine he was, how he lit up the room with his smile – and he still wouldn’t have enough fingers.
But one look at you made him question every such compliment he’d been given. If he was sunshine, you were the whole goddamn sun.
So close, yet so far; you stood just a few feet in front of him in the queue to the café counter. And he was lying if he said he wasn’t already enamoured.
James thought the word pretty must’ve been made to describe you, all soft curves, sweet smiles, daisies in your braid and little white dress. You were laughing brightly, phone clutched to your ear. He felt a small pang of envy for not being the one to elicit it.
But he felt lucky to even be able to see you like this — in all your beauty and light and gentleness. It wasn’t even winter, and he’d gotten so close to warmth. What a great day.
You step forward for your turn, and James shamelessly gazes at you. He sees you beam at the barista and order your drink, before jerking your thumb backwards. He steps forward curiously.
“... yeah, I’d like to pay for the person behind me, if that’s okay,” you smile and nod.
His heart does a little somersault in his chest, and he feels the affection pool like honey in his throat. So you didn’t just look the part, you really were sweetness personified.
James steps up to order next, clearing his throat. You’re stood beside him, patiently waiting for your drink as you type away on your phone. Maybe this is his chance.
He clears his throat and looks at the barista. “Hi.” Loud. Too loud. “Um… I’d like to get an espresso, please.”
“Okay, anything else? Your drink’s been paid for by the person in front of you.”
“Oh, wow,” he tries to look surprised, nervous fingers going to rub the nape of his neck. “Wow, that’s… that’s really nice. Um, I’d like to pay for the person behind me too,” he says slightly louder than he would’ve.
You hear, just like James wanted you to, and turn to give him a small smile. He feels like doing a victory lap around the block.
That’s until a confused Sirius pokes his head out from behind James, giving him a strange look. “Prongs, weren’t you gonna pay for me anyway?”
James internally smacks his palm to his forehead. Instead, he turns to glare at Sirius, hoping it conveys everything he wants it to. Sirius just blinks.
He sighs and turns back to the barista embarrassedly, hoping you hadn’t noticed.
He’s about to open his mouth to wave it off when he hears you giggle, and swivels to look at you. It’s like everything in him instantly softens, seeing the sparkle in your eyes and the bashful way you press your hand to your mouth. You’re looking at him like he just said something really funny. He thinks maybe he’d be the butt of every joke if it meant getting to see that smile.
James mindlessly pays for his drink before eagerly stepping towards you. His heart feels like it’s going to start doing jumping jacks, or maybe he might, to get rid of this insane amount of anxiety. “Hi.” He hopes he doesn’t sound as nervous as he feels.
“Hi,” you smile sweetly, slurping on your drink.
“You owe me one,” he blurts out.
“Huh?”
God, now he’s really messed up. “No, no, I meant –” he runs his hand through his hair, “– I owe you one. For, you know, the coffee?”
“Oh,” you laugh softly, easing up a little. He releases the breath he didn’t even know he was holding. “No, you don’t. That was the whole point of it.”
“Let me take you out.”
He almost lets out a squeak after having said that, immediately pressing his palm to his mouth like he’d just revealed a national secret. What was wrong with him? He watches your reaction carefully.
You smile, and turn the loveliest shade of pink he’s ever seen. “You don’t even know me.”
“I want to know you.”
His tongue seemed to be speaking of its own accord. Maybe he’d give it a tongue-lashing later, but for now, he’d let it get him a date.
You consider him for a while, smile widening slightly. “Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay,” he exhales with a grin, running his fingers through his curls again. “Okay, sunshine. I’m James.”
You blush at the term of endearment. “Hi, James. I’m Y/n.”
“Hi,” he mumbles. “Hi, Y/n.”
You both stare shyly at each other for a moment, like you’re taking the other in. Getting to know them, even though you weren’t, really. Maybe that’s how it had always been; the sun knew of its sunshine even though it couldn’t see the rays itself.
You clear your throat bashfully. “I have to go.”
“Oh, um – okay, wait –” James scrambles in his pocket for his phone before holding it out to you. “Your number?”
Your face lights up as you take it and type your number in. You hand it back to him. “Does tomorrow work?”
He nods enthusiastically. “Yup, tomorrow works. Same place?”
“Same place.”
“Okay, then,” he exhales, unable to stop the smile on his lips. “Bye, sunshine.”
“Bye,” you grin shyly and wave, pressing your straw to your lips as you turn around to leave.
A daisy falls out of your hair, landing softly on the wooden tiles. James picks it up and tucks it into the shirt pocket next to his heart.

everyone saying "thank god i didnt see this specific post that inspired this" as if this is about one specific issue and not the ways that even self proclaimed allies who clutch their pearls and "would NEVER!!!" do this are also. some of the ones doing this by never speaking about transfem butches or uplifting transfem butch experiences to the point nearly every single trans woman who is/was butch who has interacted with this post has lamented the fact that they dont feel welcome or comfortable calling themselves butch bc of the way OTHERS expect butches - even if they know on some level it is a role they Want to fill or be able to explore. its being married to a transfem butch and loving her for 4 years and knowing the loneliness and frustration she experiences as a trans woman who is Butch. its the fact that talking about transmisogyny esp within butch/femme realms is frequently defanged to be about general misogyny (and yes, assuming butch = transmasc is also misogynistic towards cis butches and i did not do a good enough job in my original post in emphasizing i was focusing on Transness within butch/femme spaces so ik im to blame for those comments on here but also. my post isnt the only one this happens to. why cant one conversation about transmisogyny stay about transmisogyny w/o also reorienting to include cis ppl). its RARELY seeing anything about femme4butch or butch4butch dynamics that highlight the beautiful experiences that is being with and loving butch trans women unless its specifically a post about t4t dynamics (and even then if its written by anyone but trans women or the people who actually love them, chances are the "transness" evoked in the post is largely transmasculinity, even with a haphazard "on E" tossed in when talking about hrt). its seeing people more willing to clown on the "butch = transmasc" crowd than they are willing to uplift and love trans women who are butch (unless its to oggle)(and this definitely isnt the first post ive made about transness and butchness, but it Is the first one thats gotten this many notes in a single day bc "i love you butch trans women" as a solo statement or even the focus isnt enough i guess). its, even in the VERY limited appreciation of butch bottoms, the way they are all assumed to be he/him pussy havers by default and that trans women, especially butch trans women, are cornered into being tops and doms even when they dont want to be and have to BEG for people to desire them. it's in the way y'all clutch your pearls and pat yourselves on the back for being allies but wont even talk to butch trans women unless its to get her to top you.
to the transfem butches who may end up reading this: i love that you are you. i love the way you love femmes, especially femmes like me who also are pushed to the side in favor of stereotypes on how butches/femmes "Are/Should Be". i love the way you embrace your masculinity and wear it as a badge of pride and honor. i love you even when you are feeling the worst about yourself and your relationship to your butchness. i love you when you stand firm that you are a butch woman when others dont acknowledge your presence or misgender you for being You. i love you when you Insist people respect you. i love having the honor of having held space and love for so many of you already. i love knowing you exist. your butchness is so special and you are so special. i am so sorry for the ways people sometimes overlook your existence. i am so sorry that so many posts, including mine, focus more on the frustrations towards how people treat you than expressing this love. i am so sorry for the ways people have dismissed your perspectives on butchness in favor of appealing to the masses. i wish i could make everyone see how wonderful and special it is to love and be loved by a butch trans woman not for what she does To/For me but because your sheer existence enriches everything in my life. you make my world technicolor and i am forever grateful to every single butch trans woman i have met, will meet, or will never meet. i love you.
you guys know butch =/= taking T right? you guys know dyke masculinity is not correlated to being transmasc right? you guys know that even your silly jokes where you flatten butchness to taking T/being transmasc is extremely transmisogynistic right?
#this is really long snd rambly but im in my feelings rn so#im not responding to everything and i still have this post muted cause my heart started hurting yesterday#seeing people clutch their pearls and gasp in shock while every trans woman who is/was butch Immediately knew what i was talking about#and why i was centering transmisogyny on this post.#im keeping this post muted so if u dont like it argue with your mother idfc

Could you please write a story where lando x reader have basically 'adopted' keegan (even tho he's like 3 yrs younger than them) and she hates whenever they make him do dangerous stuff
AN: SPECIAL EXTRA FLUFF POST!!!! (I know I said I wasn't gonna post a fluff this week but this came in and I got too excited so I quickly wrote it before work! NOT proof read!
OMG stop I absolutely love this idea!! I stopped writing a fic to get this one started! I did switch timelines just a big to make the story work so pretend the video on Quadrant where Keegan tried Karting for the first time happened after summer break!
TW: NONE
WC: 1.1K
Y/N POV
"Keegs, have you eaten anything today?" I ask walking up to him with the sandwich I had made for him before we had left for the yacht day.
"I had breakfast," he says softly knowing we had eaten over 6 hours ago and he had been outside all day in the sun.
"Keegan, you're an athlete stop being stupid," I laugh while tossing him the sandwich which he great fully took and started eating it.
"He's a grown man, love. Let him live," Lando tells me softly while approaching me from behind and taking me into his hold.
"You too Norris, sit down and eat," I say while passing him the second sandwich which has him groaning but instantly sitting next to Keegan and starts eating his sandwich.
"Whipped," I hear Max Fewtrell say from somewhere else on the yacht making me shake my head and threaten him with the last sandwich in hand.
"You and P are such moms," Max rolls his eyes while taking the food from me and sitting next to his best friend.
Over the last year or so the friendship between Lando and Keegan had grown from more than just a sponsored athlete to a truth friendship. When the younger boy started coming around it was almost instant that my motherly instincts kicked in with him.
I mean hell when he called us after winning gold at the Paris Olympics I hadn't stopped crying from podium. He still laughs about it and even pokes fun but he has also on multiple occasions expressed how thankful he to have Lando and I in his life.
Once the yacht day has come to an end we make our way back to the house we had rented for the week.
"We're going cliff jumping tomorrow, do you guys want to come?" Martin's friends asked the rest of us when we had made it back to the house.
"No," I instantly say a long with P while all the boys instantly say "yes" making me look directly at them.
"Have you all lost your damn mind? 1 of you is in contract for racing which mind you comes back in just a few weeks and the other just came off of Olympic gold, you need to be fucking careful," I start ranting while Martin starts laughing at the group dynamic not expecting anything less from us.
"It's fine, we'll be fine," Lando reassures me making me me shake my head.
"Get Zak's approval and then it's fine," I say with a smirk and a little shoulder shrug knowing his boss would lose his ever living mind if he found out his young driver is trying to do something so dangerous.
"Please! I promise we wont get hurt," Lando begs giving me his puppy dog eyes I have never been able to say no to, a long with Keegan behind him giving me the same look.
"Okay fine, but I swear to God if you get hurt," I say while pointing a finger before the two boys.
With that the broke out in bright smiles and Lando instantly took me into his arms and places a few kisses on my lips.
We're now coming to the end of our trip when Lando and I are relaxing in bed having some much needed downtime when a knock rings out through our room.
"Come in," I call out grabbing my bookmark and putting the book I was reading to the side.
When Keegan walks in he has a nervous expression written all over his face.
"What's wrong?" I ask sitting up a bit taller making Lando sit up a bit more noticing the serious expression written across the younger man's face.
"Can I ask for some advice?" Keegan says while walking into the room and closing the door behind him.
"Of course, you can sit on the bed," I say laughing a little when I noticed him awkwardly standing near the end of the bed.
"So I've been talking to this girl," Keegan starts while sitting on the bed.
"Aye! My man," Lando says excitedly while dapping Keegan up making his cheeks grow even redder.
"Well anyways, her name is Ella and we've been talking for awhile and I want to make it official but I'm nervous she might say no and I also need ideas on how to plan the perfect date to ask," Keegan admits making me smile. While it might have been Lando's first time hearing about about Ella, Keegan had already come to me about her and from what I had gathered he really liked her and she seemed really sweet.
After about an hour of planning the most perfect date for Keegan to take Ella on he thanked up both before leaving the room with a bright smile on his face.
"That's my son for real," Lando says laughing making me shake my head with a laugh falling from my lips.
"He's such an awesome kid," I reply back before cuddling closer into Lando's side.
"Did you pull the same move on Carlos when you where asking me out," I tease with a smirk on my face.
"Maybe," Lando admits with his cheeks reddening.
It's been a few weeks since summer break and we already have a week off from racing which means it's time to film for Quadrant and as we pull up to the track both Lando and Max have been suspiciously quiet about what we will be filming.
When we pull up to the track I see Keegan almost instantly making everything click for me.
"No! He is not about to hope in a kart without any training!" I say sternly making Max laugh and Lando turn and give me a reassuring smile.
"He's fine, he can drive a car, he can drive in a few circles on a kart," Lando says but it just makes me groan and throw my head back.
Lando did end up giving Keegan a small run down before filming and once he was in the first Kart I could already feel my stomach drop. He was going as fast as his car will allow him to go but you can see the difference between Lando's control of the Kart and his control but after the first lap he was able to adjust and already looked more comfortable.
As the karts got faster the more I go stressed. Keegan was clearly having an amazing time in the karts but my anxiety is going through the roof.
By the end of the video it is clear to all of us that Keegan loved every moment of it and even asked the next time he could drive one.
When the video was posted fan instantly clung to the fact that I was like a mom to Keegan. I mean an entire compilation was made where it was every moment I made a comment, face, or gasp throughout the short video making fans across F1 laugh at the endearing moments between friends.

Sorry it feels a bit rushed I just loved the idea and might even circle back around in the future and add to the story

Wrong Chat?
Hyunjin x fem!reader
Warnings: None!
Genre: Best friends to lovers, flufffff, texts
Summary: Hyunjin, your best friend, drops you off for a coffee date with your colleague Mingyu. It's not a date at all, but Hyunjin thinks it is. And he rants in the wrong group chat - completely jealous and unhinged.
a/n: Wanted to make a Clueless series! Thoughts?
Part 1 - Clueless!
Hyunjin sighs dramatically as he flops onto the couch in his apartment. He's been pouting ever since he'd dropped you at the cafe where you're meeting Mingyu, your colleague for coffee.
Hyunjin: I’m actually losing my goddamn mind.
Hyunjin: She’s out with him. With. Him.
Felix: Hyunjin, it's just coffee.
Hyunjin: OF COURSE IT'S NOT JUST COFFEE, FELIX.
Chan: Oh no🙄
Minho: Here we go. Someone hold his leash.
Hyunjin: This is NOT good. Mingyu is - he’s like…
Jeongin: Are you okay bro?
Hyunjin: I AM NOT OKAY.
How is he supposed to be ok when you, the love of his life is out with some guy for "coffee"? Jisung had taken a girl out for coffee a few weeks ago, and now she's his girlfriend.
Hyunjin sighs. He couldn't think of you being anybody else's. You're his girl. And he's gonna win you over.
Meanwhile, you are sitting across from Mingyu, discreetly checking your phone as it buzzes repeatedly with notifications. You freeze when you see the texts.
Oh, so this is why Hyunjin was in a bad mood the whole morning, you think. He barely said a word to you as he drove you to the cafe.
Changbin: Dude, calm down. It’s just coffee.
Hyunjin: COFFEE LEADS TO DINNER, DINNER LEADS TO NETFLIX, AND NETFLIX LEADS TO YOU KNOW WHAT. ASK JISUNG.
Jisung: HYUNJIN.
Felix: 😳
Minho: Jisung you sly dog.
Chan: Hyunjin, touch some grass.
Hyunjin: I CAN’T, CHRISTOPHER. SHE IS MY GRASS.
Minho: Let it all out. Keep going.
Chan: Hyunjin. Deep breaths. IN through your nose, OUT through your mouth.
Hyunjin: I SWEAR TO GOD IF HE LAYS A FINGER ON HER
Changbin: I don't think he's laying anything on her.
Felix: Okay, Hyun, you need a time-out.
Hyunjin: No, what I NEED is for Mingyu to trip over his stupid perfect legs and fall face-first into a compost bin.
Mingyu smiles at you across the table, gesturing towards his laptop as he speaks. You are trying so hard to focus on the ideas he's laying down in front of you - the startup ideas that you two have been talking about forever. You smile back, nodding, while trying not to choke on your laughter.
Jisung: Stupid perfect legs? Hyunjin, why do you even know what Mingyu’s legs look like?
Hyunjin: Because I have eyes, Ji. I pay attention to the threat level.
Hyunjin: He's like 6 feet tall.
Jeongin: Threat level: Sexy.
Hyunjin: THANK YOU, JEONGIN. No one asked you.
Chan: You're tall enough
Hyunjin: Not enough apparently
Felix: Hyunjin, calm down.
Hyunjin: No, because LISTEN. Who does he even think he is. Asking my girl out. How dare he.
Hyunjin: SHE’S OUT THERE WITH HIM WHILE I’M JUST
Changbin: Lonely and deranged?
Hyunjin: EXACTLY.
Seungmin: Someone hose him down
You are trying to concentrate on the graph Mingyu is pointing to now, but seriously, who are you even kidding. Your cheeks are warming up with the second-hand embarrassment from what's brewing on the group chat.
Hyunjin: And do you know what really sucks? She’s probably looking AMAZING right now. Like, how does she do that? How does she leave the house and make everyone fall in love with her?!
Hyunjin: And doesn't even realize that I love her? She obviously doesn't! Like I'm right here.
Jisung: Why don't you just corner her in the supply closet?? Omg I never thought I'd get a chance to give that back to you 🔪
Hyunjin: Bro. She's my best friend. It isn't the same.
Jisung: Excuses excuses
Felix: Oh SHIT.
Felix: 🚨 STOP 🚨
Jeongin: Wait, what chat is this 👀
Hyunjin: What do you mean what chat?
---
Hyunjin goes quiet for a second.
---
Hyunjin: Wait.
Hyunjin: WHAT CHAT IS THIS???
Chan: You absolute clown.
Felix: I tried.
Minho: LMAO
You: Hyunjin.
Hyunjin: Y/N. Baby. Light of my life.
Y/N: Here’s what’s gonna happen. You’re picking me up in 20 minutes. And we're gonna talk.
Hyunjin: Ok. Yes. Ok.
---
Hyunjin was still typing and you were about done with this.
---
Y/N: Baby. Stop typing.
Hyunjin: Shutting up now.
Changbin: She really did put a leash on him.
Felix: This is why I love her 😁
Y/N: And Hyunjin?
Hyunjin: Yes, angel?
Y/N: I love you too.
Hyunjin: 😳😳😳😳
Hyunjin’s heart literally stops when he reads your text. You love him back. You love him back!!! He feels faint, his hands are shaky and he just needs to see you. Right now.
Hyunjin: Picking you up now.
Y/N: Ok baby.
---
And finally, it was all calm again.
---
Chan: Well, at least we get a little peace and quiet now.
---
As you step outside, you spotted Hyunjin’s car pulling up, his face twisted in a mix of nervousness and relief. His gaze immediately locks onto Mingyu, who waves goodbye. Hyunjin behaves just so that he can show you that he can be a good boy when he needs to.
You grin as you get into the car, and pull on the seat belt. When you look up at him, he's watching you eagerly, well he does look a little scared - like a child waiting to be scolded for doing something wrong.
“You ok, Jinnie?” You ask.
“Perfect. I'm perfect.”
You raise an eyebrow, fully aware of the effect you have on him.
“Is that so?” you purr, and Hyunjin gulps, as he nods.
“Yeah,” he mumbles, looking away.
“You know,” you said with a sly smile, “if you had said something sooner, we wouldn’t have had to go through all this.”
Hyunjin’s face turns a sweet pink, and he can't help but smile a little.
“Can you say it again?” He asks.
“Say what?”
“That you love me?”
You feel your own cheeks heating up as you your eyes meet.
“I love you, Hyunjinnie. I have for as long as I can remember.” You whisper, and Hyunjin's head falls onto the steering wheel as he does his best not to scream out in joy.
You giggle at his reaction and he looks at you again.
“Can I kiss you?” he asks shyly.
“Yes please,” You say and that's that.
---
Hyunjin: Guess what, losers?
Hyunjin: WE KISSED.
Chan: Wow. Congratulations?
Minho: Was it a pity kiss? Be honest.
Changbin: I'm sure she did it to shut you up.
Hyunjin: It was magical.
Hyunjin: She looked at me, leaned in, and BAM. Fireworks.
Hyunjin: It’s what poets write about.
Jeongin: Or she just felt bad for you.
Hyunjin: NO.
Felix: Seriously, if you keep this up, she’s gonna see this and run the other way.
Hyunjin: She won't!
Y/N: Hyunjin.
Y/N: GET OFF YOUR PHONE.
Hyunjin: Ok bye.
Chan: Jokes aside, we're happy for you both.
Jisung: Of course we are
Minho: Y/N, sweetheart, get your man a collar
Y/N: Noted.

His. | The Salesman x Wife!Reader
Summary: You were his, a shame some men did not get the memo.
Warnings: Canon violence - Possessive!Salesman - Violent!Salesman - Jealous!Salesman - Simp for his wife - Slut Shaming (not reader) - A man being a creep - The Salesman getting quiet creative with the games - grammar mistakes -
The Salesman loves his wife, he loves her so much that he would burn Seoul down just for her.
He hates when others get her attention, your attention, you are his after all. Why do you need to meet up with your parents ? Dont they trust that He is taking well care of you ? Why does your friends wants a night out without their S/Os ? Does they want to be whores and cheat ? You woulnt ever do that to him!! You are smitten and down bad for him.
He has worked so hard to make you fall for him and his well composed self. You never once saw his dark side, his emotions were always under control when he was with you. He only showed you his good side, the side that was deep down locked only for you.
Would it bee too cheesy to say you had the key for his heart ? Probably, but that was the truth. No one could pull him away from his dark ideas, only you, he just needed to see your name on his phone to light up his mood.
And he knows he has his own failures, being possessive over you its one of them. But he cant help it, you are after all an amazing woman. Everyone should bow down to you when you pass them. The Salesman has to calm down his anger when he sees just the smallest disrespect towards you. He is already making plans on how he would take revenge for you.
But he cant go on killing every person that bothers him. Not because he does not want to do it. No, he would love to. But because it would attract too much attention and last thing he wants its you being under stress or having a police on his tail.
However there are things that just crosses the line, makes him see red and think:
When was the last time I played a game with someone ?
And god knows he does not mean an innocent game.
But what was going on that was pulling on his nerves?
Well, the spring season had just started and you being the lovable creature wanted to go out towards a well known park to see the new flowers.
He agreed, anything for his wife. He even looked up which day would be the best one to go and see all the new flowers. Not that he cared for these, no. He wanted to see your smile and that spark in your eyes. That was what he wanted.
And of course you had dress beautiful for it, part of him was temped to just stay home and show you how much he loved you in more carnal ways. But he decided to let that for the night.
The park was as expected full of peopel of all ages. Three times he had moved to the side to avoid being crashed by a kid, and three times you had give the parents a polite smile and a few words to not worry about it.
Hand in hand you two walked around. Besides the flowers there were sellers, ballooms, sweets, water, even umbrellas.
"Love can you get me a bottle of water? Oh! And ice cream?" You asked pointing at two stalls.
He nodded giving you his signature smile kissing your cheeck and telling you not to move that he would be back soon.
Saddly the ice cream took more time since there was a small line. He kept looking back over his shoulder to make sure you were alright. And for the most part you were, sitting there looking down at your phone (probably telling your friend group about your date, well he will check that later).
"What flavor Sir?"
He told the seller the flavor you wanted, pay for it and waited taking another look at you, a small smile on his face-
Only to be wipped out at the new sight.
A Man, maybe younger than him was sitting right next to you. Talking to you, smiling at you, being too close to you.
Who does that Man think he is ?
He cant help it, he is jealous, knows you wont ever go behind his back. You were his, his wife and only his. Why others seemed to not get the message?
"Sir?.."
Fuck, he must have stared for too long and looking a bit too agressive because now the seller was almost trembling as he was giving him the ice cream.
Just as he was having a death stare it went back to his polite self, taking the ice cream and going towards you.
The closer he got, the angrier he felt. That Man, no, that fucking worm was even closer now. He did not need to know what he was saying to you, his body language gave it away.
And so did yours. You were not liking it. If you being almost on the corner of the bench was not enough then your face was a clear give away.
But some men are pathetic and even when they can see the ring on your finger they wont back off.
Scum of life, this one would not live.
"Im married, and im getting uncomfortable. You should leave"
Oh your voice, like an angel it almost made him feel at ease.
Almost.
"Dont be like that baby, I just asked for your number, and I dont mind sharing"
Well he did mind. In fact he never liked sharing. And even less when it comes to you. You and sharing does not go in the same prhase, hell no.
He catches your eyes and can see the ask for help. And so he is finally there, whatever that excusme ot a human was going to say its cut off by his polite cold tone.
"Sorry my love, there was a line. I got you water and your favorite flavor" He says ignoring the man and giving you the items.
"And who may you be?" He asks his fake polite smile showing. He is towering over him. Making him feel small and smaller.
If he could, he would snap his neck here.
"Uhh, no one important. Sorry I will leave now" The namelss man says standing up and bowing, but before he can go the Salesman takes his arm rather harshly.
"I insist, you kept my wife company while I was gone after all.
And like that, thinking that he is fooling him he gets his name.
The Salesman nods and thanks him before taking your arm to start walking to the opposite side of the park.
"He came- I did not want to make a scene" You start, not scared of him but feeling rather bad because you are covinced he feels bad.
"No. Its my fault. I left you alone for too long, a beautiful woman as yourself should never be alone. Dont worry, you are with me now" He says kissing your head. "Eat your ice cream before it melts or did that exchange leave you with a bad feeling?"
Fucker he would pay for ruining his wife day.
"A bit...but you got it for me, so I will eat it" You said smiling up at him.
His heart flutters, you would do anything for him. He knows it. Maybe not like the same things he would do for you, but he knows you would push whatever thing or person aside if it means making him happy.
His dear wife.
~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~
"Park Beolle" The Salesman said the mans name in a cold tone walking behind him. "Your parents did not like you a lot right? I cant blame them, you stole money from them multiple times" The Salesman said.
"This is not for them, its because you ruined my wife's day. And did not respect her. So I must punish you, I dont expect someone like you to understand"
Park Beolle stood there, hands tied behind his back, heels tied up together as well, a tape over his mouth. In front of him multiple bear traps stood.
The Salesman took out his loved gun "If you manage to cross the room within twenty seconds then you will live but I you fail"
He stood besides him gun on his own head a sick smile on his face.
"I will shoot you, and it goes without saying that you will have to jump. Ready?"
The Salesman saw the poor display of ability seeing him get his feets inside one of the bear traps making him fall, another one closing.
The tape muffled his screams but the Salesman kept watching him and the time.
"And up" His voice was a sing song tone, like he was happy about it.
The sound of the gun fired was everything that was left. Blood soaked the bloor.
"Ah, im going to be late. I need to clean this, well I hope my dear wife waits for me" He said taking a napkin and cleaning his face. "I will call her just in case"
~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○~○
For the first time The Salesman came to his house with you already sleeping. He had kept you on call for one hour with the excuse of him doing some papel work.
"Eh? Metal sound?" He had say carrying the bear traps "I think you are getting sleepy my love, or maybe it was this stapler"
He smiled softly at your sleep form. Not even aware of the monster he was, to you he was a loving dotting husband. Nothing more and nothing else.
"Sleep well my love, I love you"
The now clean blood from his face and hands were a seal of it.

sweet [part five]
paige bueckers x azzi fudd
word count: 3.1k
masterlist | sweet masterlist
It’s fleeting, the hardened look that passes over Azzi eyes. If Paige wasn’t so familiar with even the subtlest shifts in Azzi’s body language, she would’ve missed it. The squint of her eyes, the tenseness of her jaw; Azzi’s not just upset, she’s furious. And Paige has always felt bad for the people Azzi’s felt this way towards, the silent anger radiating off a face that was normally bright with a dimpled smile. She’s always thanked God that it was never her, that between them it’s always been a back and forth of shy smiles and blushes.
But now Azzi is staring at her as if she doesn’t even recognize her, and Paige is at an utter loss of what to do. “It’s always just sex with you, isn’t it?” Azzi says wryly. She pushes harshly away from Paige, wiping her neck, as if trying to erase the marks already bruising her skin. “I’m going to bed.”
“Wait, Azzi.” But Azzi ignores her, flipping to her side and pulling the sheets tight over her rigid body.
Paige knows there’s no use in arguing. It seems like hours that she stares at the ceilings, scared to even move. Tears gather at the corner of her eyes. Furious at herself, she scrubs them away. And she’s almost asleep, the physical and the mental exhaustion from the day creeping up on her, when she hears sniffles coming from the other side of the bed. And then Azzi is crying, and it takes everything in Paige to not turn around and take the other girl in her arms.
Azzi makes it a point to ignore her the entire time during rehab the next day and on the drive home. As soon as they return to Storrs, she locks herself in her room with Micaela, making it clear that she wants nothing to do with Paige.
But after a week of sleepless nights, Paige has had enough. She can’t stand the thought of living in a world where Azzi can’t even bear to look at her. Knowing Azzi won’t respond to any of her texts or calls, she takes it upon herself to check her apartment, but the younger girl’s room is empty, looking a little bare. Confused, she runs to Werth and checks the gym, the media room, and finally the kitchen, only to find Amari and Caroline the only ones there. “Where’s Azzi?”
Amari and Caroline exchange concerned looks. “She left,” Amari says gently. “She didn’t tell you?”
“Left?” Paige’s head spins. “Where’d she go?”
“Back to Virginia. She said she’s gonna finish out her rehab there.”
“What? Did she tell you guys?”
Amari looks at her, worried. “She told all of us last week, the day y’all came back from New York. We thought you knew?”
The day they came back from New York. “Fuck. How long is she gone for?”
“Probably past the end of season, maybe even the end of the semester,” Amari says, her eyes rounding in worry as she observes Paige’s increasingly frantic state.
“Fuck,” Paige repeats, massaging her temples. “She left and she didn’t even tell me?”
“You kinda deserve it,” Caroline says pointedly, always Azzi’s biggest defender.
Paige tries to muster up a glare at the brunette, but she’s exhausted, and she knows she has no one to blame but herself. “Yeah, I know,” she finally mutters dejectedly.
“So what’re you gonna do?” Amari questions.
Paige slumps into a chair beside them, kicking at the leg of the table. “I don’t fucking know. She doesn’t even wanna talk to me anymore.”
“Then make her.”
“What?”
“Go to Virginia. Apologize and make things right,” Caroline says, her voice hard. “I’m sick and tired of hearing you two pine over each other.”
In a daze, Paige walks the entire way back to her apartment. By the time she unlocks the door, she’s already bought a plane ticket for the same night. She startles when hands touch her shoulder and spin her around. “What’s up? You look pale.”
“Azzi went back home,” Paige responds distractedly, tapping at her screen as she texts Tim asking if he can pick up her from the airport.
“Home?” Ella laughs. “Well, she finally listened.”
That gets Paige’s attention. Looking up from her phone, she squints. “What?”
“I asked her to give you space,” Ella cocks her head. “She said she would, but you guys went to fucking rehab together last week. But now she’s gone, so I guess she really did listen.”
A knot of something painful starts to form at the base of Paige’s head. “You- what? Why the fuck would you ask my best friend to give me space?” she demands.
“Dude, you’re always so fucked up worrying about her. Even now, you look like you just fainted.” Ella regards her coldly. “Excuse me for wanting us to go on one date without you thinking of her.”
When Paige stares at her, her mouth agape, Ella steps even closer, wrapping a hand around her bicep. “Come on,” she purrs. “We can have so much fun now that’s she gone.”
“We’re over.” Ella has the audacity to look surprised.
Paige grabs her purse from the coffee table and pushes it roughly into her chest, causing the girl to stumble back. “Now get the fuck out of my apartment.”
Paige is already in her room by the time the door slams shut. She stuffs things haphazardly into her backpack as her mind reels. Azzi had left. Azzi had thought Paige didn’t care about her. The mere thought of Azzi thinking she could ever be a burden makes Paige feel sick with fury. God, she had said all those things to Azzi, just for her best friend to think she was doing her a favor?
••
“Thank you for picking me up on such short notice.” Paige fiddles nervously with the straps of her backpack. “I’m not sure if coming here was a good idea but-”
“Paige,” Tim interrupts her train of thought, placing a warm hand on her shoulder. “You know you’re always welcome. But, just a warning…Azzi might not be the happiest that you’re here. But give her some time, and she’ll cool down. She always does.” Tim’s unwavering confidence should give Paige a boost of the same energy, but it only shakes her up more. Everyone’s expecting them to make up like they always do after every petty fight, but what if they can’t make it through? What if this is it? Paige has never fucked up like this, never hurt Azzi so much that the younger girl felt the need to put multiple states between the two of them.
When Tim pulls into the driveway, Paige asks for a moment. The older man gives her a comforting hug before heading up to the house first, giving her space. Taking a deep breath to try and calm her racing heartbeat, she fluffs up the flowers, attempting to make them look prettier. She adjusts and readjusts the envelope placed in the middle of the petals. She runs her hands through her hair and scrubs at the stain at her sweater but to no avail. Paige is going to apologize to Azzi, and she’s going to make it right. Rolling her shoulders, she steps out of the car and marches to the front door.
Before she can even reach for the handle, the door swings open. Paige blinks.
“You’re here,” Jon sighs in relief, throwing his body at her. Paige balks for a moment before returning the hug.
“Were you watching me?”
Jon smiles sheepishly. “Sorry, but you were taking so long. Why were you looking in the mirror so much? You look fine.”
Paige blushes and pushes him away. “Stop stalking me.”
Jon beams at her again, before his smile drops suddenly. “Uh, just so you know, her girlfriend’s here too.”
And just like that, all the confidence Paige has spent the last fifteen minutes gathering disappears. Paige clears her throat, not sure if she heard him right. “Micaela’s here?”
“They were calling for a long time yesterday night. And she showed up this morning.” Jon pauses, looking at her meaningfully. “With a suitcase.” Then his smile is back, just as bright as it was before. “I talked to her a bit. She’s cool. But you’re Paige.” He pushes her towards the staircase. “Go.”
Azzi’s door is opened a crack, and Paige peeks through. Micaela and Azzi are on her bed, Azzi snuggled in her arms. They’re watching something on the TV. Micaela kisses the top of Azzi’s head, and Azzi looks up at her and laughs.
Fuck. Paige can’t do this. She backs away from the door. Micaela, she treats her so well. She puts Azzi first. And Micaela hasn’t hurt Azzi like Paige has. This is the biggest Paige has seen Azzi smile in months - her best friend is finally happy.
In that moment Paige decides that she needs to let Azzi go. She sets her bouquet of flowers down outside the room as quietly as possible. She takes the envelope, crumples it up and puts it in her pocket. She was stupid for ever thinking that flowers and a letter would make up for all the shit she’s put Azzi through.
“Where are you going?” Paige is halfway out the front door when a firm voice stops her.
“Home.”
“Come in and close the door.” Paige wants to tell Katie that she isn’t her mother and that she has no right to tell her what to do. But Katie has been there for her when her own mother hasn’t, has welcomed her into her home for months at a time and still checks up on her every week over text. So she closes the door and faces the older woman, unable to look at the eyes so similar to the ones she’s fallen in love with.
Katie beckons for her to sit, and she follows suit. “As her mother, I don’t think I’m supposed to say this,” Katie says slowly. “But don’t give up, Paige.”
“She’s literally sitting in there with her girlfriend.” Paige’s bottom lip trembles. “I’m too fucking late, and I can’t even blame anyone but myself.”
“I know it feels like there’s no solution. But-”
“With all respect, you don’t understand, Katie.” Paige cuts her off. “I don’t think we can ever go back to the way we were.”
“And that’s the problem. You’re so focused on trying to return back to normal but is that what you really want? Maybe it’s good you guys can’t ever be the same again. Maybe it’s good you two take the risk to become something more.”
Paige stands up, resolute this time as she reaches for her duffel. “I can’t,” she says. “I can’t ruin this for her.”
“Stay,” Katie urges. “If not for Azzi, at least for yourself. I just checked the weather. There’s going to be a blizzard. It’s not safe for you to travel.”
Paige is about to open her mouth to protest before a familiar voice rings out. “Mom?” Azzi bounds down the stairs, a smile on her face. Micaela is close behind, reaching for her waist and laughing. But then Azzi’s eyes shift to where Katie’s looking, and she sees Paige. Her face drops immediately, and the action is enough to send Paige’s stomach hurdling. “Paige?”
Paige lifts a hand, forcing a weak smile onto her face. “Hey.”
Katie glances between the two of them. “Azzi, sweetie, Paige is here to stay for a few days,” she says lightly.
Azzi scoffs, disbelief etched onto her face. “Like hell she is.” She walks up to Paige, jabbing a finger in her face. “You can’t just show up at my house and expect everything to be fine, you asshole.”
“She can’t go home right now,” Katie says gently. “The snow’s six feet thick outside. It’s not safe.”
“We’ll find a way to make it work,” Micaela says softly, grabbing Azzi’s wrist in an effort to calm her down. “Let’s go, Az.”
Paige burns. No one calls Azzi that but her. Azzi glares at Paige one last time before following her girlfriend back upstairs. Katie’s eyes follow them, worried, until she heaves a sigh and faces Paige again. “Come on, hon,” she says. “You can stay in the guest room.”
Before now, Paige has never stepped foot in the guest room. It’s always gone without saying that whenever she stayed over, Azzi’s room became hers. Their clothes would mix in heaps on the floor until Paige would return home with a suitcase full of items half hers, half Azzi’s. The scent of lavender in the room would, for a few weeks, be overtaken by the more woodsy scent of Paige’s cologne. Now, the guest room is clean and airy, and it smells like lilacs.
Paige doesn’t like it.
But she sets her stuff down and texts the group chat to let them know she won’t be home for a few days.
Dinner is a silent affair, with Tim trying but failing to crack jokes to lighten the mood. Paige occupies herself with Jon and Jose, asking them about their basketball season and school, while Azzi talks in low tones to Micaela from across the table.
Paige is picking at the food on her plate when Micaela’s voice brings her out of her thoughts. “So, Paige, how long are you here for?”
Paige swallows her broccoli a little bit too quickly and coughs. “However long it takes for the storm to die down and my flight to clear.”
“And what were you here for?”
To finally confess to your girlfriend that I’m in love with her. Paige stabs another broccoli with her fork. “Just had some stuff to do in the area.”
“No use paying for a hotel when we have an extra room here,” Katie pitches in, saving her from having to lie even more. And while it’s clear neither Micaela or Azzi believe her, they don’t prod any further, leaving Paige to finish her food in silence.
••
“Can’t sleep?”
Paige turns around, surprised to see Micaela standing there, her expression clear. She leans back against the counter, tipping back her drink. “Something like that.”
“Mind if I join?”
Paige’s first instinct is to say no, but she realizes with a start that this is the girl Azzi loves. And if Azzi loves her, and she loves Azzi, there must be some part of her that can get along with Micaela. So she nods. “There’s grenadine and lemonade in the fridge.”
Micaela rummages through the fridge before returning with a concoction of her own. They stand in silence for a while, each of them sipping their own drinks, until Micaela says, “I’m not stupid. I know something happened between the two of you when you went to New York.”
Paige stares down at her glass, tracing its rim with her thumb. “Look,” she finally responds. “I fucked up with Azzi. I hurt her, a lot. I didn’t wanna come to terms with my feelings because I was a pussy. But don’t make that same mistake. I see you with her,” Paige pauses. “And she looks like how she used to. Before her injury. And if you’re the one who can bring her back to that, then I’m gonna help you.”
Micaela nods, taking everything in. “You still love her.”
“I don’t think I’ve admitted that to myself yet.” Paige finishes off her drink. “She was - is my best friend before anything else. I know that she knows I’ll die for her even if we never end up talking again. And I think I can be okay with that. That as long as she knows that I have her back, that there’s someone who’s always on her side, then I’ll be fine.”
Micaela tilts her head, studying her carefully. “Thank you,” she says softly.
Paige turns away, her eyes burning. “I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing this for Azzi.”
••
Paige stays true to her word. She sends Micaela Azzi’s rehab schedule and at-home therapy treatments. She carefully compiles a list of her comfort movies and shows and texts them to Micaela. When Azzi has a particularly rough day at rehab, Paige spends the entire time she’s gone building a pillow fortress on the couch in the basement. When Azzi’s in a mood, she likes feeling like a child again - it makes her worries a little smaller, a little easier to deal with. So Paige lays out blankets, fluffs up pillows, and buys popcorns and caprisuns from the store.
When Azzi comes home and hugs Micaela, raving about how cute it is and how much she appreciates it, Paige lingers near the stairs of the basement. The sound of Azzi’s giggles, even if not aimed at her, put a smile on her face.
She looks up as Tim passes by. He fixes her with a stern look. “Just so you know, I don’t approve of anything you’re doing.”
“What am I doing?” Paige tries to look innocent.
“You’re only going to hurt yourself doing this, Paige,” he warns.
Paige bites down on her lip, the skin there already tender from all her worrying. “As long as she’s happy,” she says stubbornly.
“Stop hiding,” he says lowly. “Show her you love her.”
But Paige can’t.
So she continues to love Azzi from afar. She makes sure there’s always multiple ice packs in the freezer. She prays every night before bed that God will take Azzi’s pain away and speed up her recovery process. She texts Azzi’s old high school friends, letting them know she’s back in town and to drop by to say hello when they can.
It’s 12 am and she’s cutting up strawberries when she hears steps and heavy breathing from behind her. Turning around, she’s surprised to see Azzi glowering at her.
“I found out.”
“Found out what?” Paige’s mouth is dry. This is the first time Azzi’s addressed her directly since the day she arrived, and to say she’s nervous is an understatement.
“Everything.” Azzi clenches her jaw. “The pillow fortress? The ice packs? The fucking strawberries you’re cutting that will magically end up in my lunch bag with Nutella tomorrow?”
Paige drops the knife on the counter, as if that would make her look any less guilty.
“Why do you have to make things complicated?” Azzi says, her voice hoarse as if she’s been crying. “I think I’m finally over you and then you show up to my house and you start making me feel things for you that I shouldn’t feel.”
Paige takes a cautious step forward. “Why can’t you feel them?”
“I have a girlfriend. And aren’t you scared? Right now we can still go back to being us. We can be friends. But this-” Azzi’s voice cracks. “We’ve caused each other so much pain and we’ve never even been together that way. Imagine if we actually dated and we broke up. God, Paige, that would fucking wreck me. At least when we’re friends I can rest with the fact that you’ll always be there somehow.”
“So you don’t even wanna try?” Paige’s tone is incredulous.
“Do you have any idea how much power you have over me?” Azzi chokes out.
Paige closes her eyes briefly. “I would never hurt you.”
“How can you say that?” Tears leak from Azzi’s eyes. “How can you say that when you already have?”
“Azzi.” She reaches for her hand. “Let us try. You know - you know I love you? I know I’ve been an ass, and I’ve fucked up over and over again. But I can’t-”
“Stop.” Azzi shakes her off, walking backwards as if even being near Paige is physically hurting her. “Please don’t make this hurt more then it has to.” She crosses her arms over her chest, withdrawing into herself as she shivers. “I thought I finally found it. Micaela - she’s perfect. Was perfect. Doing all these things that only one person before has ever done for me. Then we get into an argument and I find out that you’re behind all this shit? That my girlfriend has been lying through her teeth this entire time? God. When am I ever gonna find someone that actually cares about me?”
“Azzi, I just need one chance. Please.” Paige watches Azzi back away, and every fiber in her being is screaming at her best friend to stop running away her. “I care about you. And I found out what Ella said. She couldn’t have been more wrong. Fucking hell, you’ve never been a burden to me, Azzi. How could you ever think that?”
“It’s not gonna work out, Paige. It won’t.”
“So that’s it?” Paige spreads her arms, lets then fall helplessly by her side. “You’re just gonna give up before we even try? Like a fucking coward?”
“You have no right calling me a coward,” Azzi laughs bitterly. “Not when you used me for sex and dipped whenever the conversation got too serious.”
“You’re the one who always left first, not me,” Paige grits out through her teeth. “You’re the one who suggested being friends with benefits. You are just as much guilty as I am.”
“Well, I regret it.” Azzi’s words come tumbling out before she can stop them. “I regret everything.”
“You regret everything?” Paige repeats back, shaking her head in disbelief. “I might be an asshole, but you’re even worse than I am. I can’t even believe you right now.”
“Go home.” Azzi turns her back, and her body shudders, as if she’s sobbing. “I don’t want you here. You should’ve never came.”
“Gladly,” Paige spits out. “I fucking hate you for this.” And as she stands there, chest heaving with the arrows she’s thrown, chest hurting with the hurt of everything said and unsaid, she knows that she’s lying. That she could never hate Azzi, as much as she tried. But everything hurts too fucking bad, and Azzi is looking at her as if she’s the worst thing in the world. And when Paige goes home and looks at herself in the mirror, she thinks that maybe Azzi isn’t too far off.
••
Azzi walks into the guest room. She lies on the bed, inhaling the faint scent of Paige still lingering in the air. She turns on her side, burrowing her face into one of the pillows when she hears something crinkle. Confused, she reaches into the bedsheets and finds a worn, crumpled card. Her heart skips a beat when she flattens it out and sees familiar handwriting scrawled messily across the paper.
Dear Azzi,
I talk a lot. But I think you know me well enough that I show my feelings best through actions, not words. I’ve said hurtful things to you. I don’t know how to verbalize myself in a way that makes sense.
But I care about our relationship, so I’m writing this letter to try and finally put into words correctly the way I feel about you, because it’s the least you deserve - something honest, and something real from me. I know if I try to say this all in person, I’ll fuck it up somehow. So here is my letter, to you, that I’ll probably read and rewrite a million times.
I love you. I’m sorry it took me so long to realize it. But I do. And I know now that no one has ever made me feel what you do.
I know now that you were frustrated with me because you thought I never saw you beyond a friend with benefits. But I swear that everything I’ve done, everything I’ve hurt you with, was because I was trying to protect myself from the pain of realizing that you have always been more than just a friend. It has never been because I saw it as “just sex.” I saw it as more, I wanted it as more, and I was too immature to deal with it in a way that was kind to you. I’ll regret that forever.
I have never not loved you. I don’t think I will ever stop loving every single thing about you. And I keep repeating myself, but I really am sorry. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to give you everything that you deserve, but still, I want to try. Hence why I’m coming here like a sap with all the flowers and shit tryna win you back.
But if somehow everything goes wrong and we never end up speaking again, just know that I’ll think about you every night before I sleep, just like I do now. Just know that I’ll always give us a second chance. I think we are inevitable. (I hope i spelled that right)
And if hopefully everything goes right and you forgive me and I somehow am able to be a part of your life after everything, then I promise I’ll work every day to show that I am serious about us. No other person, no other distractions, nothing else. Just you.
But no matter what happens, whatever decision you choose, as long as you’re happy, I’ll find a way to be happy.
Love,
Paige
