EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Americans are used to the narrative that dangerous things – from “bad hombre” migrants to drugs – cross the border from the south.

But the truth is not so simple, says Josiah Heyman, professor of anthropology and director of the Center for Interamerican and Border Studies at the University of Texas at El Paso.

The fact is that hundreds of thousands of firearms are smuggled from the U.S. to Mexico every year and are traced to 70% of all weapons seizures following criminal activity.

"We have a mythology that this is the safe side of the border. We are safe day to day from violent crime, no question […] But there is widespread guns going south and that is something that we need to be aware of as a society and reject,” Heyman said.

American cooperation is something the Mexican government desperately wants as drug-related drug violence has reached record levels in the past two years.

Now, as the Biden administration settles into its first weeks at the White House, Mexican officials are pressing for action.

“The Mexican government is going to propose specific actions to U.S. authorities, including intrusive and non-intrusive inspections of vehicles at the border, as well as the use of technology to stop arms trafficking,” said Fabian Medina Hernandez, chief of the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico.

Southbound checks by U.S. Customs and Border Protection are infrequent, habitual commuters tell Border Report.

Texas, epicenter of gunrunning into Mexico

According to Medina, 41% of all the illicit guns utilized to commit a crime in Mexico came from Texas. California comes in second place with 19% of the volume and Arizona in third with 15%.

The border crossings south of McAllen are the principal entryway for this deadly contraband, followed by Eagle Pass, El Paso and Brownsville.

That estimate comes from the volume of seizures effected during simultaneous surprise inspections on both sides of the border conducted between April 2020 and this month. Thousands of guns and ammo were seized during those checks, according to the Ministry.

“There are 9,000 sales points for guns along the U.S. border. I don’t know that they have as many McDonald’s restaurants as they have gun stores there,” Medina said on Thursday at an online arms trafficking forum.

Medina estimates that between 2.5 million and 3 million guns – from small arms to semiautomatic weapons preferred by the drug cartels – have come into his country from the United States in the past 10 years.

Heyman said guns often come into Mexico a few at a time.

“One notable characteristic is that it’s done in very small amounts, the so-called ‘ant’ smuggling,” he said, citing a Houston Chronicle investigation that tracked 27 guns from Houston to Coahuila, Mexico, from an individual who brought them to a cartel over a six-month period.

Heyman said the same pattern holds for guns purchased in El Paso, smuggled to Juarez and eventually taken to gangs deep in the state of Chihuahua.

Medina added that the Mexican government handed U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Christopher Landau a list of 9,000 weapons of U.S. origin used in crimes in 2019.

Mexico and the United States have signed memorandums of understanding on security and weapons trafficking in the past, but this would be the first time the Biden administration tackles the thorny binational issue.

Gun control a ‘shared responsibility

Heyman said it’s time for the people of both countries to discuss gun violence.

“Not only do we have a shared problem, but also a shared responsibility and a shared opportunity,” he said

The number of women killed by gun violence is also on the rise in Juarez, which sits across the border from El Paso, in the past few years.

“We are probably not going to solve the entire issue of violence and illegal markets, but what we can do is make it less dangerous. This is a goal that should be shared by Mexico and the U.S. government and all people who want to live safe,” he said.

Both governments need to come up with strategies that include going after the cartels’ finances – the money that allows them to obtain U.S. guns, Heyman said.

Heyman called for tougher gun regulations in the United States, including eliminating the private gun sale option and more comprehensive checks and licensing.

 One thing is for certain. Contrary to the righteous indignant blabbing from rabid 2nd Amendment people, everyone needs to be armed gang. Uvalde proved their histrionic rhetoric false.

19 Texas law enforcement officers (one for each dead person), well-armed and trained (that’s questionable), stood by while a vicious killer massacred a classroom of children and their teachers.

The good guys had guns.  A teenaged killer proved that theory wrong 19 times.

Not that the folks at the NRA convention in Houston paid more than token lip service to the carnage.  Instead, they continued to ramp up their guns for all, good guys need to be armed harangue.

And don’t forget Ted Cruz’s one door school policy.

Leaving aside the inability of authorities to get a coherent timeline and story together on what happened, one thing is clear.  These law enforcement people did not do their job.  They did not preserve and protect some of the most vulnerable people in the country, children.

The only thing that surprises me is that the Blue Line hasn’t come out and defended the Uvalde 19. I think the Blue Line realizes how badly this police mission was screwed up.

I applaud the few law enforcement member who got in and rescued school kids.  They are brave men and women who should be cheered for their willingness to go into harms way and rescue school kids.  They know and understand that going into harms way, risking their lives, is what they signed up for when they became cops.

As I write this, the people in Buffalo are still coming to grips with the massacre in a grocery store. What they will lean in the coming days is that the attention paid to their tragedy is fleeting.  The American public and her government will race to the next tragedy, and the next, like golden retriever puppies chase shiny objects or cats chasing a laser pointer.

Be prepared Uvalde. The nation morns for you today.  Tomorrow or the next day, that depends on the next massacre.

Despite having over 400 million guns in the possession of Americans, with more being bought every single day, there is no protection available through laws or law enforcement. Blame those who think the Constitution can be interpreted a hundred different ways UNLESS you’re talking guns. Then there is nothing but the 2nd Amendment, written in stone as if God Herself wrote the words. Neither is true but these drugstore cowboys who believe the Wild West myth want everyone, weapons at the ready, to inhabit every public space.

Mass killing? Get more guns.

More guns, more guns, more guns.

At this rate America will soon die of an ammo lugging, weapons overload heart attack.

Pay attention Buffalo, and all who came before her. Tomorrow or the next day, America will turn her attention to the next massacre.  Take today for all it’s worth because the next AR15 massacre is just around the corner.

With millions of guns in the hands of those who are ill equipped mentally or have sufficient training to hold a squirt gun much less an automatic weapon, a new day will dawn when the public. Politicians, law enforcement and government will again shed tears, rend their garments, offer lots of thoughts and prayers while doing nothing to change the American killing fields.

It's our country. Look what’s become of it because a vocal and bullying minority continue to pretend guns are the answer.

I often wonder, if an actual long-term disaster occurred, would it be all that difficult to survive at our little safe haven with family and friends? We have planned for this SHTF thing for a while now so we are totally ready for it. Yes, plenty of ammo to last many years, a couple of years of food supply, and a good setup to clean our water if need be.

During our planning, it was obvious that we will likely run out of the most critical thing first, our food supply. With that in mind, we chose an area that will have a 4-6 month (or longer if you can take the summer heat) growing season. We fully intend to grow our own food and we will start the moment we settle in.

Unfortunately, in most areas, the soil will not support a garden very well. In fact, it will likely fail us or under perform year after year. If you have ever tried growing vegetables in your backyard, you know how hard it really is. The most common failures are due to inadequate nutrients in the soil and lack of water. If we have a water supply in place, our primary concern will be food for our plants. One thing we must get straight in our heads is what plants need to grow. We cannot afford to be wrong about a single thing. Aside from sunlight, air, and water, plants need 13 specific nutrients in the soil to grow and produce fruit and seed. Now we can do the “Organic” thing and bring along 16 tons of manure and compost for every acre of land we set aside or we can get real and bring along a highly concentrated and natural material. You guessed it, fertilizers, those that contain the actual elements that plants must have to grow.

Now don’t get me wrong, we are going to end up with a self-sustaining garden that is fed from organic waste overtime but this takes years to accomplish. We do not have years, and we for sure are not going to bring 16 tons of chicken manure with us. We get a couple of tries at this and that’s it before our stored food supply is gone.

So, let’s discuss what fertilizers really are. Most people instantly think “chemicals” when they hear the word fertilizer. At the same time, the word “chemical” brings to mind danger or poison. Just like a firearm, we must truly understand what we actually have in our hands as we use it.

The fact is, fertilizers are nothing more than elements that are removed from rock and air. No different than what is in our bottles of vitamins and minerals, just plain old elemental calcium, potassium chloride, zinc, and so on. These are the elements that we are going to have with us when we get to our safe haven. A few bottles of vitamins and minerals for us, and a few hundred pounds of plant ready mineral elements for our crops.

With everything that will already be working against us such as the weather, bugs, poor soil, and no real farming experience, we must be on top of everything we can control. The limited amount of seed we have in storage will need an instant supply of nutrients, and that supply of nutrients cannot run short at any moment prior to harvest.

To keep costs down and to lighten our load, we need a fertilizer that is as concentrated as possible while still being in the proper proportions for a variety of crops. Too much magnesium will cause problems with phosphorous metabolism in plants while not enough calcium will cause water uptake problems. Use calcium carbonate or calcium sulfate as the primary calcium source, and you may as well have not added it. It will be months before these materials break down and are available to plants as soluble calcium.

All components in our fertilizers must be as close to 100% water soluble as possible and be immediately available to our plants the moment water touches it. This is no easy task to accomplish and much less, is it available in the market?

Take Miracle-Gro tomato plant food for instance. It claims to be specifically for tomato plants yet it contains absolutely no calcium. How can this stuff possibly work when all tomato plants use more calcium than they do nitrogen? That fact is it does not work. The tomato plant will die long before it produces a ripe tomato, if a soluble form of calcium is not added. We could take the chance and rely on the possibility that there is soluble calcium in our soil but in a true SHTF scenario, this is absolutely not going to happen in my world. I am completely eliminating the possibility that my food crops will fail to produce because all 13 required nutrients were not available.

Most of us have no idea what to look for on a product label and there are literally thousands of products out there. I have fair grasp as to what I actually need to make a plant grow to its fullest potential and unfortunately, “Houston, we have a problem”.

This is a reality, I have looked at thousands of products over the years on several product databases and have found only a few products that had all the required nutrients in the proper form and is available in a fairly concentrated mix.

The problem I found most often was that the Producer did not offer shipping and it had to be physically picked up at their location. Of the few that would ship the product, the shipping costs were higher than the actual cost of the product.

If you ask me, this pretty much is the SHTF, in that it is so difficult to find a suitable product, unreal. I do ask that every reader do his or her best to find a reasonably priced mix and post and let The Prepper Journal know what you have discovered.

As for me, I said to heck with it and just started making it myself.

Concerned over gun theft, Liberty church and school ask Academy Sports to improve safety

LIBERTY, Mo. — One spot in Thursday’s multi-city crime spree is the focus of some frustration.

The Academy Sports and Outdoors store in Liberty is where 26-year-old Jeffrey Millsap jumped the store counter and, according to police, stole a handgun and ammunition after pulling a knife on a store clerk.

Police say Millsap used the gun to wound a car dealer in Independence. Millsap was later shot and killed by police in Holt.

That store shares a property line with St. James Catholic Church and School on S. Stewart Road.

Leaders of that Roman Catholic Parish said they’ve asked Academy to safeguard against incidents like this one, but their previous conversations didn’t yield satisfying results.

“We want to be proactive about what we are doing for security and safety,” said Father Mike Roach, St. James’ pastor.

Thursday morning’s incident was too close for comfort. The Academy store sits less than 50 yards away from the school and church. No children were on campus when Millsap’s theft and chase began, but Roach said there were church members in the building.

“We had a sigh of relief that we weren’t in school and children weren`t on campus,” said Jennifer Scanlon-Smith, St. James’ school principal.

Roach said 385 students attend St. James Catholic School. They’re not scheduled to return from holiday break until next week.

“We have grown increasingly concerned over the sale of weapons and ammunition next door without adequate security within their store,” Roach said.

The pastor said he’s talked with corporate leaders at Academy about safety during gun sales, and Academy’s team assured him they were doing their best.

“The fact that the person was able to hold the gun, to put in ammunition while he was in the store and flee the store so quickly without them knowing where he went,” Roach said.

“Our understanding is the guns aren’t locked. They’re not behind a locked bar or lock and key at this time,�� Scanlon-Smith said. “We’ve reached out to them to be a good neighbor, and we’d hope they will do the same.”

Roach said he’s suggested to Academy’s team to sell guns and ammo on separate sides of the store, making it harder for gun thefts to take place.

FOX4 News reached out to Academy’s public relations office in Houston, but our request for comment on the church’s plea for cooperation wasn’t returned.

Are You Ready … for Anything?

Situational awareness has long been a fundamental tenet of self-defense, especially for those of us who carry firearms. After all, having a top-shelf gun on your hip, and possessing the skills to use it effectively, will mean little if you allow someone to sneak up behind you and whack you on the head with a tire iron.  All of us who carry should keep that in mind. Being constantly (and actively) aware is absolutely essential. If you keep your attention focused on everything that is happening around you, it is less likely that you will be caught off guard. Note: Being buried in your smart phone, texting or looking at cat videos is not a good tactical plan.  Hurricane Harvey illustrated another reality: that danger can come from a variety of sources. The devastation that the hurricane caused means that, even after the rains finally stop, it will be many months before things return to any semblance of normality, especially for residents of Houston.  We are often impressed with the way that hurricanes, floods, wildfires and tornados result in some of the most heroic and selfless acts of courage by both first responders and everyday folks. Harvey was no different, with numerous videos showing neighbors and even complete strangers helping those in need.  Unfortunately, however, in the wake of natural disasters, we occasionally see an uglier side of human behavior — that which can turn a bad situation into an even worse one. Having your house damaged or destroyed is traumatizing enough, but finding that someone has violated your personal space in order to profit from your misery is simply infuriating.  Depending on the climate where you live, take whatever preemptive steps you deem appropriate to protect yourself and your home from potential threats. Non-perishable food, water and ammo are also a good idea for your home  and  your car (you could get stranded). But don’t stop there.  At one time or another, most of us have heard some variation on the saying, “Always have a Plan B.” Special forces operators and military veterans would add, “…and a Plan C.” They will attest to the fact that no matter how meticulously you put together your Plan A, things on the ground will invariably change the dynamics … and seldom for the better. Give some thought to a backup plan (e.g. “What if we have to evacuate?”).  Chaos and disruption can come from a variety of causes. Knowing what is going on in your state, your city and even your neighborhood is a really good idea. The increasingly violent “protests” that have popped up across the nation should serve as a warning. Staying informed about such events can help you when creating your own “Plan B.”  A perfect example is what happened last Sunday. While most of the nation was watching the coverage of Hurricane Harvey, in Berkley, California (no surprise), “dueling” protestors got into violent confrontations with each other. Half a dozen people were injured, including some police officers, and 13 people were arrested.  It is clear that we live in a completely unpredictable world. From natural disasters to rioting “protestors,” it is virtually impossible to predict what you might encounter, which is why always being armed is simply common sense, even when merely running to the store for a carton of eggs. Texas Bill Against Carrying Firearms While Under the Influence Gains Traction

A Houston family is blaming a combination of alcohol and irresponsibility for a shooting that left their family forever changed.  After the incident, they are now publically announcing their support for a proposed bill that would make it illegal to carry or operate a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.  This story is gaining traction and it’s likely going to stir up some discussion in the gun rights debate.  LAX Ammunition, a convenient place to buy ammo online, shares the details.

The Texas bill, which Democratic State Representative, Gina Hinojosa, plans to file, would make it illegal to carry all types of firearms while intoxicated.  As things stand right now, the state law only prevents intoxicated persons from carrying handguns.  

"My question is how come alcohol and guns aren't the same as drinking and driving?" said Donna Howard, mother to Shelby, who was shot last September by her boyfriend who was under the influence of alcohol at the time.  He is now facing charges for his crime.

Laws regarding guns and alcohol differ from state to state.  For example, in Oklahoma and New Mexico, it is illegal to carry any type of gun with alcohol or drugs in your system.  Alternatively, in Louisiana and Texas, the law only applies to handguns, while in Arkansas there is no law at all.

In the proposed Texas bill, the perpetrator wouldn’t have to actually harm anyone to be in violation of the law, carrying the firearm alone would be an offense.  It is expected that the bill will be filed sometime within the next two weeks.

The best part of Super Bowl LI’s halftime show? There will be absolutely zero Coldplay involved.

Sunday’s extravaganza will eschew the typical tradition of rolling out a trio acts, instead focusing on a singular performer and her sidekick. LI’s headliner? Lady Gaga.

The Fame Monster artist was originally rumored to be flying solo, one year after Beyonce, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars choked the field at Levi’s Stadium and two since Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz, and Missy Elliott teamed up for an eclectic performance that catapulted Left Shark into the public consciousness. Instead, she’ll team up with San Francisco’s favorite nonagenarian — the legendary Tony Bennett — who will contribute a brief video introduction to help kick off the event.

Lady Gaga, never one to avoid spectacle, will have to step up her game Sunday. She’ll be the focus of more than 72,000 live fans and hundreds of millions more across the globe on television. The Grammy-winning chanteuse has some grand plans in store for her performance; reports swirled midway through January she wanted to find a way to sing from the retractable roof of NRG Stadium.

Earlier this week on Mix 104.1’s Karson & Kennedy, the 30-year-old singer revealed that the idea came from her sister, who said “I know, let’s suspend you in the air!” However, Lady Gaga stopped short of confirming whether she would open the show on the roof.

While taking a zipline down to the field like an even more glorious Shawn Michaels might not be in play, the superstar should be able to put together one hell of a playlist for her 15-20 minute set. In October, she released Joanne, her sixth studio album, which spawned the top-50 hit “Perfect Illusion.”

But fans won’t be especially interested in her newer stuff, most of which represents a dropoff from her critical and commercial peak. Gaga hasn’t had a No. 1 hit on the Billboard U.S. charts since 2011, when her anthem Born This Way rocketed to the top of the weekly listing. While the intervening five years since have left her peaking at merely “very good,” her foundation of hits from 2008-10 will give her plenty of ammo to work with.

Her first two major singles as a solo artist, “Just Dance” and “Poker Face,” were both mega-hits that entered the zeitgeist and continue to get radio airplay eight years later. “LoveGame,” “Paparazzi,” and Beyonce team-up “Telephone” followed. For Bennett, his performance Sunday will be his first at the Super Bowl, but will come alongside a familiar face. The World War II veteran teamed up with Gaga, 60 years younger, for the Cheek to Cheek album and subsequent tour. The two performed at jazz festivals throughout the world in 2015, leading to Sunday’s historic appearance. When Bennett takes the stage at Super Bowl LI, he will be the oldest performer to do the halftime show, even if he’s only appearing via video screen.
