I can't scream out loud so I'll just scream here instead. I hate everything and want to do things I'm not allowed I want to scream and wail and punch and kick and bite till my body gives out. But that would be dtoo loud and to inconvenient for everyone else I want to really let go and sink and shrivel but you're not allowed to be emotional loudly. You have to sit and deal and journal and meditate and push it all away but I've pushed to much to one side and now I'm just back here. I don't have enough problems to be helped I'm not normal enough to function I'm not loud enough to get a reaction I'm not quiet enough to go unnoticed I just want someone I give just 2 shits about me but if that ever happened I'd be locked up. I know they'd put me away and drug me and tame me like a cat but I just want to be angry and loud and cry and bite and kick and punch but you can't do that when other people are around. I can't even cry in my own home because the walls are so thin the neighbours will hear me and bang on the walls but if I go outside there's even more people and even more faces to please. I don't want to push it all away anymore I want to do what everyone else does and be angry and kick and scream but that makes hem crazy and get pit away and I just want to be held and loved but I don't want to be touched. Everything is wrong and bad and evil bit I can't fix it I'm one mother fucker from a place people down the road forget exists that has no money no time no power no stake in the pie but I want change and I want good and I want to see it all go away but it never will. I'm sick of the world and the people because no matter how they act I know they all want the same as me and were just all pretending we don't. We're all miserable sad little animals pacing our cage but we have the keys to the door were all just to scared to open it cause the field is so big and so nice were scared we'll get lost in it but being lost would be a damn sight better than being me. I want to claw my skin off and pluck out my eyes I want to break my fingers and watch them rot but time doesn't stop when you want it too and people won't just do what they want even hough we all know we want it. I want to scream into the forest but I know the wolves are watching I want to bash a head in and watch the eyes twitch I want to bite a nose and watch the eyes shiver and plead but you're not allowed to want to watch the world burn. I could have been such a worse kid and gotten away wih it but the best needed to be picked and I couldnt say no after it started I just want to be the kid that gets gold for not beating the shit out of the teacher for a day but instead I got shit all for doing my best everyday.
If only I was allowed to be angry when angry was OK and not an ugly writhing mess you could comment on. I JUST WANT TO SCREAM
Is that so much to ask for?

Euclid Heights Historic District
2729-2611 Edgehill Rd.
Cleveland Heights, OH 44106
Unlike other National Register Districts in Cleveland Heights, which are exclusively residential and exclusively single-family, the Euclid Heights Historic District's building types and architectural styles create a rich portrait of American upper and middle-class lifestyles during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  This 365-acre suburb bounded by Mayfield Rd., Coventry Rd., Cedar Rd., and Overlook Lane, was one of the first platted in the desirable higher ground located along an escarpment above Cleveland's University Circle and Euclid Avenue. Early on, Euclid Heights’ developers sought to attract wealthy Millionaires’ Row residents who, in the late 19th century, had begun migrating eastward away from the city's pollution and commercial bustle. The development benefited from the advent of electrified streetcars, which could conquer the steep grades leading up to the Heights. Tucked in the corner of a green space framed by Doan Brook and Lake View Cemetery, Euclid Heights offered a stylish retreat where those able to handle longer commutes could enjoy spacious lots, curving streets, handsome architecture, spectacular views, fresh air, privacy and a chance to put distance between themselves and the increasingly dirty, problem-plagued city below.
     The story goes that Atlanta and New York railroad lawyer Patrick Calhoun, grandson of U.S. Vice President and Senator John C. Calhoun, traveled to Cleveland on business in 1890. Having time to spare, Calhoun rode out to Lake View Cemetery to see the recently dedicated memorial to the slain President James A. Garfield, a structure Calhoun’s family had supported. On the way he noticed the building boom going on in the East End (Hough area), and wondered where that was heading. Calhoun had been involved earlier in the Richmond Terminal railroad project in Virginia and was familiar with the groundbreaking work that Frank Sprague, the "Father of Electric Traction," had done there in using electric railroads to promote urban development. Knowing that the East Cleveland Railway Company had recently done some innovative work electrifying streetcars locally, Calhoun saw an opportunity to develop an important streetcar suburb at the top of Cedar Glen.
     Working with local partners, including John D. Rockefeller's real estate man, J.G.W. Cowles, attorney William Lowe Rice and merchant John Hartness Brown, Calhoun had development plans drawn up by 1892. The Panic of 1893 put their plans on hold but by 1896 an amended site plan was recorded—more or less identical to today's layout of the area with Euclid Heights Boulevard bisecting the site from the southwest corner at the crest of Cedar Hill. In the northeast corner of the development would be the commercial district, what we now know as Coventry Village. Other prominent features included The Overlook—Overlook Road southwest of Edgehill Road and featuring large mansions featuring splendid north- and west-facing views—and the Euclid Club, a country club that sported a golf course spanning both sides of Cedar Road and a grand quarter-mile entry path beginning at what is now the corner of Derbyshire and Surrey Roads.
     The development gradually attracted fine homes and also spurred other beautiful subdivisions, such as Barton Deming’s Euclid Golf Allotment on the south portion of the former golf course (which closed in 1912). Moreover, the Van Sweringen brothers, are believed to have been paperboys in the Euclid Heights area and later went on to adopt themes from the Euclid Heights Allotment in their famous Shaker Heights and Shaker Farm communities (the latter comprises streets such as Stratford, Marlboro, Fairfax and Guilford, west of Lee Road and immediately north of Fairmount Boulevard) . Calhoun, however, was distracted by legal problems running the San Francisco streetcar franchise after the Great Earthquake and saw his Euclid Heights development company forced into bankruptcy in 1914. By then William Rice had been murdered while walking home to the Overlook from the Euclid Club, a sensational case that featured John Hartness Brown as a suspect. Although it still maintains its picturesque “Garden City” look, Euclid Heights soon evolved from a private hilltop retreat to a busy gateway to the rapidly developing Heights. A large portion of Calhoun-owned land in the area’s eastern sector was sold off and subdivided, thus explaining why Cleveland Heights homes east of Coventry Road tend to be somewhat more modest than those near the top of the hill.  Euclid Heights was listed with the National Register of Historic Places on October 31, 2012. It remains full of architecturally significant homes (including Calhoun's at 2460 Edgehill), but its main significance is the role it played in opening the Heights as a streetcar suburb for wealthy Clevelanders.

BEHIND THE WHEEL!
Lucy & Cars ~ Part Three
Tumblr media
In the late 1960s and early 1970s America’s automobile obsession had become part of daily life, including on “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Great Airport Chase” (1969) ~ Filmed entirely on location at Los Angeles Airport, there were a variety of vehicles featured. During the chase, Lucy (or her double) drives a Hough Paymover towing a jet!
Tumblr media
The episode features (top left to bottom right):
1968 Chrysler Newport
1968 Dodge Cornet 500 wagon
Clark Clarktor, luggage transport vehicle
Corchran Cargo King, for unloading baggage
1963 Ford C-Series Truck
Clark 15su-653
Tumblr media
The episode included stock footage of various airport vehicles.
Tumblr media
There is also footage of cars on the roads and parking lots outside the airport, including the iconic LAX Theme Building.
Tumblr media
Footage of Lucy and Harry driving the Clark 15su on the tarmac was done with a stunt double in the location footage, and using rear-projection with Ball and Gordon in the studio. The wires in the upper left corner of the screen actually made their way into the finished film!
Tumblr media
"Lucy Helps Craig Get His Driver's License" (1969) ~ The driving test scenes were filmed on location and reproduced in the studio using rear projection.
Tumblr media
Craig takes his road test in Lucy's car, a pale yellow 1965 convertible Dodge Dart. In the parking log there are also a red 1969 Plymouth GTX and a blue station wagon waiting to take the road test. The location footage was done on the streets of Hollywood surrounding the Paramount lot. The Dodge Dart was previously driven by Sergeant Carter on Desilu’s “Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C” in 1965.
Tumblr media
As the Dart traveled the streets of Los Angeles, it passed many other vehicles parked or traveling the roads.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Visits the Air Force Academy Parts 1 & 2″ (1969) ~ Season two opens with a road trip as the series goes on location for the first four episodes.  All four episodes feature a Travco motor home. The company's RV's were originally built on a Dodge chassis. Travco was in business from 1964 until the late 1980s.
Tumblr media
Like previous location shoots, the episodes were supplemented with studio shots using rear projection for driving scenes.
Tumblr media
The mobile home passes a 1955 Chevrolet Two-Ten parked on the side of the road. At the time, this car was nearly 15 years old!  It resembles the 1953 blue Pontiac featured on the Hollywood episodes of “I Love Lucy.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy Runs the Rapids” (1969) ~ This episode opens the same way as the first two episodes of season two, with the camper driving through western landscape to the strains of “Breezin’ Along with the Breeze,” a song used as the theme music for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s 1953 film The Long, Long Trailer.
Tumblr media
This episode features the interior of the mobile home, where some physical comedy takes place, much like in The Long, Long Trailer.
Tumblr media
The mobile home isn’t the only vehicle parked on the banks of Lee’s Ferry, Arizona.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Indian Chief” (1969) ~ The fourth and final episode on the road trip finds the mobile home pulled over to help the driver of a 1967 GMC C-2500.
Tumblr media
Studio shot footage is combined with location footage of Lucy riding on the roof of the Travco!
Tumblr media
After this road trip, the series returns to its interior home and office setting.
Tumblr media
"Lucy at the Drive-In Movie" (1969) ~ Lucy and Harry track down Chris and her new boyfriend Alan to the local ‘passion pit’ aka ‘drive-in theatre’.  Any episode taking place at a drive-in necessarily involved an array of vehicles.
Tumblr media
1969 Red Plymouth Barracuda convertible (Alan’s car)
1969 Blue Simca 1204 [928] (Man with dog’s car)
1969 Blue Plymouth Valiant (Younger necking couple’s car)
1969 Blue Plymouth Barracuda (Older necking couple’s car), 1964 Red Plymouth Valiant Signet & 1969 Beige Simca 1118 [950]
Tumblr media
1969 Yellow Triumph TR6
1965 Dodge Dart (Lucy and Harry’s car, the same vehicle used in “Lucy Helps Craig Get a Driver’s License”)
1964 Red Plymouth Valiant Signet
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Used Car Dealer” (1969) ~ Milton Berle plays Cheeful Charlie, a used car salesman with an eclectic array of vehicles on his lot. Charlie cons Kim and Craig into buying a psychodelic (Harry calls it ‘sick-o-delic’) 1940 Packard One-Twenty.
Tumblr media
Other vehicles on Charlie’s lot:
1961 Ford Falcon
1966 tan Volkswagen Beetle
1961 light blue Ford Falcon
1964 blue Chevrolet Biscayne
1955 Cadillac Coupe
Tumblr media
The episode also mentions:
Kaiser-Frazer ~ a car company that briefly thrived after World War II.
Pierce-Ruxton ~ a fictional combination of the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company (1901-1938) and the Ruxton, a front-wheel drive automobile produced by New Era Motors Company from 1929 to 1930.
Lucy calls a car a combination Hudson Edsel Tucker Reo and Packard - all defunct automobile companies.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ~ the name of a fantastical flying car in the 1964 book by Ian Fleming and a 1968 musical film.
Tumblr media
“Lucy the Laundress” (1970) ~ After bragging to Craig about her perfect driving record, Lucy smashes into a laundry truck. In order to pay for the repairs, she has to go to work at the laundry.  Although no actual vehicles are used in the episode, Lucy reanacts the accident at the insurance agent’s office using model cars. Lucy insists on a green car because the red one clashes with her hair!
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Viv Visit Tijuana” (1970) ~ To get there, they first have to convince Harry to loan them his car.
Tumblr media
Harry agrees to drive them using his 1970 yellow Plymouth Satellite convertible. They get stopped at the border after agreeing to transport a stuffed animal they don’t realize is smuggling stolen gems.
Tumblr media
The line of cars at the border station also features a red 1970 Dodge Challenger and a 1968 Sunbeam Alpine GT [Arrow].
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Wayne Newton” (1970) ~ The Carters drive to Las Vegas and end up at Wayne Newton’s ranch. The episode features location footage of the Las Vegas strip and Casa de Shenandoah. Harry's 1970 yellow Plymouth Satellite convertible was previously seen in “Lucy and Viv Visit Tijuana”.
Tumblr media
Rear projection of the strip was used to replicate the location footage.
Tumblr media
Tiny Tim (T.T.), Newton’s miniature horse, waits in the car!
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Raffle” (1970) ~ Kim wins a new sports car in a church raffle, but then can’t pay the taxes. The car is never seen on screen.
Tumblr media
“The Not-So-Popular Mechanics” (1973) ~ Harry trusts Lucy and Mary Jane to watch after his prized antique automobile and take it in for an oil change. Since they have been taking night school courses in auto mechanics, they decide to do the oil change themselves!
Tumblr media
There’s no room in the garage, which already holds Lucy’s new car.
Tumblr media
Harry’s vintage vehicle is a Rolls Royce.
Tumblr media
Chevrolet provided all the training materials as well as the motor parts for the car. Series Executive Producer (and husband to Lucille Ball) Gary Morton was an auto enthusiast so he acted as consultant for this episode. He was, however, billed under his birth name, Morton Goldaper.
Tumblr media
"Lucy Carter Meets Lucille Ball" (1974) ~ The prize for winning the Mais Oui Lucille Ball Look-Alike Contest is a new sports car!

Off-duty nurse rushed to save teenagers involved in police chase crash
Tumblr media
An off-duty nurse tried to save the life of two teenage boys after witnessing the aftermath of a crash that they were involved in, an inquest has heard. A jury of seven men and four women at Bolton Town Hall were told that Leo Gradwell, 14, died after 'losing control' of a Fiat 500 in Ashton Road, Golborne, before colliding with a Kia Sportage and then a Renault Clio on October 11, 2019. Two passengers in the car - named in court as Rhys and Bradley - were also injured in the collision. At the time of the crash, Leo was being chased by police, as the car he was driving matched the description of a Fiat stolen in Wigan the previous night. The court heard that a blue Fiat 500 had been taken by two masked males, one of whom had allegedly been carrying an axe. However Leo was not alleged to be one of the assailants. Giving evidence on the second day of the inquest, Susan Lane said that she had been driving home from shopping in Wigan when she spotted a car on its side in the middle of the road. After telling officers that she was an off-duty nurse, she was invited inside the scene. Ms Lane told the jury that when she first saw Leo, he had already been removed from the car and had been placed in the recovery position on the road. “He had a really good pulse,” she said. I opened his eyes and his pupils appeared to be blown, which is a symptom of a severe head injury.” Ms Lane said she asked a police officer if they had any first aid equipment but said they only had a ‘basic’ kit containing plasters. “I told them that was no good. I couldn’t do anything,” she added.Tributes to Leo left at the scene of the crash (Image: Manchester Evening News) It was at that point she turned her attention to Bradley, then aged 15. Ms Lane recalled: “His lips were turning blue… he was struggling to breathe. “I asked if anyone had oxygen as that’s what I thought he needed. I couldn’t do anything for Leo because I didn’t have the equipment, but I could help Bradley. “I talked to him and he was in obvious shock. I didn’t know if he had a head injury, as some of the things he was saying back to me wasn’t appropriate. “I was telling him to sit up straight, breathe in on three, and breathe out on three. He was really struggling.” Ms Lane told the court that she then went back to Leo but his pulse had slowed. Paramedics had arrived on the scene by this point and started CPR, she said. “I got the view that all emergency services at the scene wanted Leo to survive and did all they could to keep him alive,” Ms Lane added. Commending Ms Lane's actions, senior coroner Timothy Brennand said: “Matters unfolded for you that day when off-duty and to give up your time and skills you clearly have, you can see how grateful the family are. I can only commend you.” The drivers of the other two cars involved in the collision also gave evidence. Leo initially crashed into the back of a Kia Sportage as he tried to go around it, before the car flipped and crashed into the front of a Renault Clio on the other side of the road. Gary Dawber, who was driving the Kia Sportage, said: “I heard a big bang and then saw a car flying past my window.” Clio driver Max O’Hare told the court he was ‘in shock’ after seeing a Fiat 500 on its side and coming towards him. “I saw a police car coming towards me and pulled over so I was stationary," he said. "There was also a black car opposite me. “I only realised a moment before that the Fiat was there. I saw it went onto two wheels.” He added: “I think the police that day did all they could.” One of the first paramedics on the scene was Karl Hough, who the jury was told had almost 20 years experience at the time of the incident. After trying to resuscitate Leo at the scene, Mr Hough told the jury that he was responsible for the decision to take him to the trauma unit at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary rather than Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, which is a specialised major trauma centre. Explaining the decision, he said that he thought Royal Albert Edward Infirmary represented Leo’s best chance of survival. Mr Hough added: “I was informed it was 12 to 13 minutes away. Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital was at least 30 minutes away. “My decision on that day was based on the instability of his condition. He was very very unstable.” Leo was assessed by Dr Asim Habib at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. Dr Habib told the court that all staff were on standby for his arrival after being put on ‘red alert’. He said that on arrival, Leo still had a pulse but said he made the decision that being transferred to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital would give Leo the best chance of survival. Upon arrival at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, paramedics were informed that the CT scanner in the children’s section of the hospital was ‘faulty’, so Leo had to be taken to a different part of the site, where a scanner was available. Representing the Gradwell family, barrister Mass Ndow-Njie raised concerns about delays in Leo being scanned and questioned why he was not taken straight to that part of the hospital upon arrival. Mr Hough responded: “When we arrived, he was very unstable. The observations were not someone who could be safely put into the scanner straight away. “He needed intervention from doctors to stabilise him right away. It is unheard of for us, as ambulance staff, to take a patient directly to a scanner. “All the right people were there in the room when we arrived, they would establish priorities. There was a delay in A&E, but rightly so because they worked vigorously to stabilise Leo. “At the scanner, they don’t have the same equipment at hand, so if he became more critically ill while in the scanner, it would have been an even bigger problem." Mr Ndow-Njie also raised concerns on behalf of the family about Leo being transported by land rather than air, as air ambulances responded to the incident and had taken Bradley straight to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Dr Edward Davies, who responded with North West Air Ambulance, said: “We wouldn’t take very unstable patients in a helicopter. Land ambulances are more optimal - they are bigger spaces and there are more people. I would never have taken him by helicopter as he was so unstable.” Dr Davies added that helicopters are usually called to the scene to provide equipment, rather than to take patients to hospital. Mental Health Fic for @doinmybesthere : Bokuto
A/N: Writing this was difficult. I struggled with my weight since my teens and have been recovering from an ED. I’ve never liked how I looked so this was hard.
It started with small things at first. Moving his hands when he spooned you and putting his hands on your legs or hips, wearing layers around the house even when it was warm, getting annoyed when he tickled you instead of laughing like you usually did and most recent was not taking selfies with him when he asked. The last one was very odd, you both had albums dedicated to selfies everytime you went on a date.
Bokuto was officially confused.
He started paying more attention to the way you held yourself, he often caught you staring into space when you were watching a film or picking at the food you had spent hours cooking. You stopped buying the snacks you enjoyed and would sit there while he ate them during movie night. You had refused to go out today, instead opting to stay indoors in your hoodie and some leggings.
Another thing he noticed, you had stopped wearing shorts. He loved seeing your legs and ass in them, they always looked amazing and he would enjoy laying on them during a movie or when you were lounging around. Not that the leggings looked bad, it was just different.
"Hey babe, a new restaurant opened down the road, you wanna get take out tonight instead of cooking?"
Bokuto was scrolling through his phone for the menu, he'd seen the storefront in the way back from the gym and wanted to try it out. Plus he thought you were tired so the rest would do you some good, maybe you'd feel better.
"No, thank you Kou." You yelled from the bathroom. "You go ahead though."
"But.... but... but it's no fun by myself."
Met with silence, he pouted before peering at the bathroom door where you had been for at least 20 minutes. You weren't showering, the water wasn't on and you weren't using the toilet since the door was ajar. Hoping to be able to persuade you to get food he dropped his phone on the sofa before calling out to you while he bounced over to the bathroom.
"Baaaaaaabe, let's get- what are you doing?"
Dropping you t-shirt, you gasped when you saw your boyfriend open the door. Wiping your face, you shook your head as walked to him and kissed him on the cheek. Trying to move past, you avoided his gaze when he pulled you back gently towards him.
"Nothing. It's all good." Forcing your voice to be happy you moved away again, feeling the tears well up when he started lifting up your hoodie. "Don't... please."
"Baby, tell me what's wrong. You've been off recently and I don't know why. Did I do something? Is it work? Or family?" Pulling you into a hug, Bokuto cupped the back of your head as you started crying. "Woah, hey. Baby, please don't cry."
"I hate it."
Placing his ear towards you, he listened as you mumbled again.
"I hate my body. I hate it all."
The last word was a sob, body shaking as you cried while he held you. His arms around your body holding you close, he could feel the tears seep through his t-shirt and his chest actually hurt as he listened to you. Shushing and rocking you gently, he maneuvered you both to the bedroom and stood you both in front of the mirror.
Looking at your reflection, he marveled at how lucky he was to have you in his life. You supported him and looked after him, made sure he ate and rested after a match. His friends adored you and were super jealous, going as far to say that you were too good for him and they would steal you away. His family adored you too, you fit in with his sisters and his mum would often buy cute couple outfits for you both on holidays like Christmas.
Gently forcing you to look up, he wiped your tears and kissed your eyelids then your forehead. Tucking your hair behind your ears and wiping your nose with the bottom of his t-shirt, smiling when you wrinkled your nose at him.
"Tell me what part you don't like, baby."
"All of it."
Sighing, he shook his head fondly before turning your around to face the mirror, a little harder when you tried to move away and hide.
"Show me."
Tears began welling up in your eyes again, you shook your head before covering your face.
"Close your eyes then." Moving your hands down to your sides, he kissed the back of your head. "Tell me."
Taking an audible deep breath even with your eyes closed you felt exposed. You didn't look in the mirror unless you really needed to and even then you avoided full length ones. Never walking around the house half naked like your boyfriend did and definitely did not let him fuck you in front of it.
"My arms. They're... they wobble when I... when I move them."
You felt Bokuto's hands run from your shoulders to your hands and back again, stopping at your elbows. His breath was warm in your ear, chin resting on your shoulders you spoke.
"These arms? The ones that hold me when I'm sick, hug me when I'm down. These arms? The ones that are attached to these hands. The very hands that run through my hair when I'm lying down on your lap or go around my neck when I'm kissing you. Baby, I love these arms."
"Kou... I... I can't."
A kiss to your cheek, your body rocking side to side as he hummed.
"You can. It's just me, baby."
"My stomach... it's got rolls and when I sit they... bulge over my jeans."
Bokuto's hands moved to your stomach, moving past your hoodie and leggings, instead resting on your bare skin. Even when you moved to remove them, he held tight.
"This stomach? The one that keeps you alive? Fills with food when you're hungry? The one that protects all your organs and keeps my girl alive? The very stomach that will carry my baby one day. That stomach? Baby, do you know how thankful I am for your stomach."
You couldn't help but smile a little, his words were sweet and so sincere... even if they sounded odd to anyone else, they were perfect coming from him.
"Next?"
"Kou..."
"You can do this, come on."
"My thighs have stretch marks on them and cellulite. It looks horrible in swimsuits."
His hand moved to your ass, giving it a small tap before they caressed the front of your thighs. Eyes still closed, you could feel him tugging your leggings down before his fingers rubbed the naked skin of your legs.
"These legs? The one that carry you when you run to me after a game? The ones that wrap around my hips when I'm inside you. The legs that help you run when we're having a tickle fight? These legs baby? I love these legs, they fit perfectly around me."
Shaking your head again, tears streaming down your face now as Bokuto kissed your neck. Hands turning your around by your hips before he kissed you sweetly, slowly and with intent. His hands cupping your ass before moving up to your back and neck.
"This body is perfect. There's nothing wrong with how it looks. You're perfect for me, baby. I don't want you feeling like this, I'll tell you how beautiful you are everyday if that helps. If you're worried about things like this, you can come out with me when I go for a run or we can go hiking, I know you love that. Yeah?" You nodded. "Now what about dinner? You need to eat something."
"I don't... I..."
"How about a compromise? We can cook some food at home and then share something small from the restaurant down the road. A starter or something?"
You started to nod, thoughts running hough your mind. The calories, the nutrients all filing through your brain like a movie.
"Baby, look at me." Holding your face in his hands, he rubbed his nose against yours. "It's ok. You choose the starter, yeah? Something we can share."
You nodded again, more confident than before but still worried.
"Nothing will change how much I love you. Understand? You're always going to be my girl."

Prompt: Your older brother, Harrison, tries to give you the sex talk.

Masterlist   Harry Holland Masterlist
*Not my gif*

~~~
“Asshole, stop cheating!” You groaned, kicking your brother’s calf as you sat on the floor and he stood in front of you.
“I’m not cheating. You’re screen peeking!” Harrison argued. He lifted his foot and stretched it backwards towards your face.
“Oh my god.” You gagged as you moved away from the terrorizing foot.
“Ah, sounds like Mario Kart.” Harry laughed, coming into the room.
“Yeah and Y/N won’t stop screen peeking.” Your brother sidestepped to stand in your way again. You groaned, getting up while you kept your eyes intently focused on the screen.
“Hi, Harry.” You acknowledged your boyfriend’s presence. He pressed a quick kiss to your cheek, leaving you to fight out the last lap of Mario Kart with your older brother. “How was the shoot?”
“It was good. I take it you had fun this afternoon?” He laughed, laying down on his side on the couch as he watched you and Harrison elbow each other while trying to play.
Harrison was your older brother and best friend; when you had no one else, you always had him. And then he introduced you to Tom, who then introduced you to Harry. Sparks flew instantly between the two of you, but it wasn’t until six months ago that you started dating Harry and wasn’t until recently that you started staying at his place, which was technically also Harrison’s place and Tom’s and Tuwaine’s- and sometimes Sam’s. Like any protective older brother though, Harrison wasn’t a fan of you staying the night, but like any good younger sister, you still spent most of your nights with Harry. In your defense, their house was a lot closer to campus than your apartment.
“Well, I finished my research project early and then this div challenged me to Rainbow Road.” You explained. Knowing you were too far in the lead, Harrison licked his finger and stuck it in your ear, making you shriek in surprise. He and Harry both burst out in laughter. As you crossed the finish line in first, you hit your brother with the controller. “Fuck you, I won!”
“You get so heated over Mario Kart.” Harry chuckled.
“Loser cleans up!” You declared and Harrison shook his head.
“Ah, no. I set it up. You clean it up.” He argued. Your boyfriend sighed from the couch, clicking the remote to turn off the TV.
“There.” He said, and you smiled, laying down with him on the couch. He draped an arm over your waist while you brought him in for a kiss.
“Ok, ok, I get it. I’m not wanted anymore.” Harrison scoffed playfully, rolling his eyes at the two of you borderline making out in front of him. He quickly left the room, and you pulled back from Harry with a giggle.
“I thought he’d never leave.” You joked, feeling his fingers play with the hem of your shirt.
“I missed you today.” Harry mumbled, his lips gliding over yours as he spoke. He’d only been gone a couple hours, doing a photoshoot for the Brothers Trust, but his words still brought a warm smile to your face.
“I missed you, too.” You replied before capturing his lips with yours for a little lazy makeout session. You both knew only Harrison was home so neither of you were exactly worried about someone walking in, since your brother liked to stay clear of when you and your boyfriend were alone.
A couple days later, somehow you and Harrison were left alone again in the house, and you spent your time working on essays in the home office Harry and Tom had “made”.
“Hey, Y/N, can we, uh, can we talk?” Harrison asked, clearing his throat as he stepped into the room. You knew immediately those were the words of your brother, not your best friend or housemate.
“Yeah, what’s up?” You turned to face him as he sat on the nearby couch. He fiddled with his fingers nervously, before running a hand through his hair.
“Well, I know that you kind of live here at this point, and it’s been a month since you started staying over. And- and I know, that I told you it was okay, but you’re still my baby sister, you know?” He started nervously and you narrowed your eyes at him, trying to decide what he was getting at exactly. “I get that you’re 21, you can make your own choices, and you know I’m completely for you being your own independent woman. I’m concerned that- well, I know, Harry’s a good guy and I trust him, but he’s a guy-“
“Haz, are you trying to give me the sex talk?” You asked with a laugh of disbelief. Your brother’s cheeks turned bright red. Part of you wondered if he knew for sure that you and Harry had had sex before, but there was no way for Harrison to absolutely know since you two only ever did it when the house was empty.
“It’s an important thing to discuss!” He insisted as he attempted to regain some composure. “Look, Y/N, Harry’s your first serious relationship, but you aren’t his. I’m just trying to look out for you, make sure you know that you don’t have to do anything with him if you’re not ready for it- and really you shouldn’t be ready yet. It’s a painful experience for a lot of women.”
“Oh my god.” You hid your face in your hands, wishing he’d just end it there. “I went through sex ed, Haz, please stop.”
“Okay, so then you know to use protection. You can never be too safe. I don’t know about Harry, but never let a guy tell you that condoms are uncomf-“
“Stop!” You whined.
“If you need to go on the pill or get an implant, I’ll be fully supportive of that too.” Harrison continued on.
“Thanks. Are you done now?” You asked, still refusing to look at him.
“Not quite.” He replied, making you let out a groan. The humor of his awkward bluntness was gone and the torture was endless, “Now, if something happens-“
“You mean if I get pregnant?”
“Yes. If that happens, I’ll do everything to help you because you’re still my sister, no matter what. And if Harry leaves you, I’ll beat him up for you.”
“How nice.” You replied sarcastically as you rolled your eyes.
“I just say all this because Tom told me Harry bought condoms the other day.” Harrison admitted, and you bit back a groan. Of course your boyfriend wouldn’t think twice about the implications of buying condoms in front of his brother, a.k.a. your brother’s best friend. By your reaction, your brother immediately knew what that meant. With wide eyes, he asked, “You’ve done it before?”
“Uh,” You trailed off, not really knowing what to say. You two were close, but that didn’t mean you wanted to go into detail about your sex life with your brother.
“You have! Oh my god, Y/N, you’re too young. What the hell?” He raised his voice, standing up from the couch.
“Too young? You were younger than me when you lost yours!” You shot back, “Look, I love Harry and he loves me. And at least you know we’re being safe about it!”
He paused, shaking his head like he was trying to get rid of the thought. He let out a sigh, turning to leave the room, “It’s fine, just forget about it.”
“Hey Haz?” You called back to him, making him turn to face you one last time in the doorway. “Thanks for looking out for me. I appreciate it.”
Harrison offered you a weak smile before he left the room. You let out a small sigh, you definitely needed to talk to Harry when he got home. It wasn’t until a couple hours later that Harry returned home from an event with Tom, and by that point, you were lounging on Harry’s bed, waiting for him.
“Hi, lovebug. How was your day?” Harry asked, laying down beside you on the bed almost immediately after he had taken off his shoes.
“I had a very, um, interesting conversation with Haz.” You joked, and he furrowed his eyebrows skeptically at you. Laughing, you explained, “Babe, maybe you shouldn’t have bought condoms in front of the biggest loudmouth we know.”
“Fuck, Tom said he wasn’t going to tell anyone.” He sighed.
“Well, he told Harrison, so I had to sit through the ever lovely sex talk.” You said sarcastically, and Harry pulled you in for an apologetic kiss.
“If it makes you feel any better, Tom tried giving me the talk, too, but I tuned him out.” He laughed, making you roll your eyes at him.
“Lucky you.”
“So, is Harrison going to beat me up now?” Harry asked with a chuckle as you pushed his curls out of his face, cuddling in closer to him.
“I hope not. I love this pretty face too much.” You pressed a kiss to his nose, softly cupping his cheeks in your hands. You gave him a proper kiss, lightly swiping your tongue over his lips and he smiled into it.
“Wait, I have an idea.” You said, pulling away from him momentarily to get your phone out. You connected your phone to the living room speaker, pulling up Youtube.
“What are you doing?” Harry asked, trying to look over your phone.
“Sometimes, something beautiful happens in this world,” The song started, and Harry laughed, immediately recognizing Andy Samberg’s voice.
“Wait for it.” You teased.
“You don’t know how to express yourself so, you just gotta sing,” The song continued. “I just had sex, and it felt so good,”
You and Harry laughed as you heard a loud crash from downstairs, followed up by Harrison screaming, “What the fuck?”
My Bonny Black Bess
Let the lover his mistress's beauty rehearse,
And laud her attractions in languishing verse;
Be it mine in rude strains, but with truth, to express,
The love that I bear to my bonny Black Bess.
--
From the West was her dam, from the East was her sire;
From the one came her swiftness, the other her fire;
No peer of the realm better blood can possess
Than flows in the veins of my bonny Black Bess.
--
Look! Look! How that eyeball glows bright as a brand,
That neck proudly arches, those nostrils expand;
Mark that wide flowing mane, of which each silky tress
Might adorn prouder beauties - though none like Black Bess.
--
Mark the skin, sleek as velvet and dusky as night,
With its jet undisfigured by one lock of white.
That throat branched with veins, prompt to charge or caress, -
Now is she not beautiful, - Bonny Black Bess?
--
Over highway and byway, in rough and smooth weather,
Some thousands of miles have we journeyed together,
Our couch the same straw and our meal the same mess,
No couple more constant than I and Black Bess.
--
By moonlight, in darkness, by night or by day,
Her headlong career there is nothing can stay;
She cares not for distance, she knows not distress:
Can you show me a courser to match with Black Bess?
--
Once it happened in Cheshire, near Dunham, I popped
On a horseman alone, whom I suddenly stopped.
That I lightened his pockets you'll readily guess,
Quick work makes Dick Turpin when mounted on Bess.
--
Now it seems the man knew me: "Dick Turpin," said he
"You shall swing for this job, as you live, d'ye see"
I laughed at his threats and his vows of redress,
I was sure of an alibi then with Black Bess.
--
The road was a hollow, a sunken ravine, -
Overshadowed completely by wood, like a screen;
I clambered the bank, and I needs must confess
That one touch of the spur grazed the side of Black Bess.
--
Brake, brook, meadow and plowed field Bess fleetly bestrode,
As the crow wings her flight we selected our road.
We arrived at Hough Green in five minutes or less, -
My neck it was saved by the speed of Black Bess.
--
Stepping carelessly forward, I lounge on the green,
Taking excellent care that by all I am seen.
Some remarks on time's flight to the squires I address,
But I say not a word of the flight of Black Bess.
--
I mention the hour - it's just about four -
Play a rubber of bowls - think the danger is o'er,
When athwart my next game, like a checkmate at chess,
Comes the horseman, in search of the rider of Bess.
--
What matter details? Off with triumph I came.
He swears to the hour, and the squires swear the same.
I had robbed him at four! While at four they profess
I was quietly bowling -- all thanks to Black Bess.
--
Then one halloo, boys, one loud cheering halloo,
To the swiftest of coursers, the gallant, the true.
For the sportsman unborn shall the memory bless
Of the horse of the highwayman - bonny Black Bess.
The Road-Trip Part 7- The Epilogue
Tumblr media
Part Six | Masterlist | Bonus Scene - Pre Road-Trip
Rating: T+
Pairing: Frankie Catfish Morales x Reader
Word Count: 2,386
Notes:  I know I’ve said this every time, but really, truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank YOU! I didn’t have much confidence in myself to be able to start and finish a story but here we are. I think we’re finally at the end. (Though I could be persuaded to write a little more if y’all have any ideas for these two.) You all have been amazing and just what I needed to get through the end of this year. I wish you all a Happy New Year and Happy Holidays! ❤
Warnings: Cursing and fluff...
Summary:  Set about four and half years into the future, give or take, and things seem to have come full circle.
“Shit!” You heard Frankie exclaim, quickly followed by a much younger and higher pitched, “thit!” And then a giggle that you couldn’t help but smile at. When you rounded the corner you saw Frankie kneeling in front of your daughter, a serious look on his face.
“Nena, you know you’re not supposed to repeat things that daddy says,” he reminded her quietly, only to realize belatedly that he’d been caught when he looked up from your daughter and saw your raised eyebrow.
“I know, daddy,” Ava said with a snicker.
Frankie growled at her playfully and scooped her up, then tossed her over his shoulder as she continued her giggling. He mouthed ‘sorry’ to you as he brought over your laughing wiggle worm and pressed a quick kiss to your forehead.
You’d have thought by now that he’d have realized that your little girl was his absolute mini-me and she wanted to do anything and everything he did. She was three and had had him completely wrapped around her tiny pinky since the day she was born. Not only did she act like him, but she looked just like him. It was not an easy job telling the two of them no when they both were pouting at you.
With a shrug you dodged little feet to get your kiss. “Is your daddy teaching you bad words?” you asked, smirk firmly in place as you watched Frankie roll his eyes.
“Is ‘thit’ a bad word?” Ava asked, her dark brown eyes meeting yours when Frankie playfully spun her and hitched her up on his hip, she had the most innocent expression on her face.
It took everything you had not to laugh, especially when Frankie looked away so he wouldn’t either. You cleared your throat and nodded, attempting to be serious. “Yes, baby. That’s a bad word.”
“And daddy’s sorry for saying it in front of you,” he said, meeting Ava’s eyes, his lips twitched in his attempt to be serious.
She cupped his scruffy cheeks in her little hands and nodded. “It okay, daddy. I fo’give you.”
“Okay, baby. Go get your bag of toys together so we can get it in the car.” You rubbed her back and pressed a kiss to her temple before stepping around Frankie to head to the door.
You heard Frankie say “thank you, nena,” then loud little feet slapping against the hardwood as Ava ran up the stairs to her room, followed by the sound of clacking nails moving a little slower in the same direction. You went to lift up the dog bags that Frankie had left by the door, only to have them taken out of your hand, this time it was his eyebrow raised at you.
“What?” you asked, frowning up at him, until it dawned on you. “Oh, come on, Frankie. I can carry a few bags, you know.”
“I know you can, but that doesn’t mean you should, hermosa.” He grabbed up the other few bags that he’d put there and then looked at you expectantly.
You stood still, the two of you having a silent stand off until you huffed and opened the door for him. “Don’t complain to me when your back hurts later,” you called after him. You went to shut the door only to have to open it again for Flex, who hurried out to follow Frankie. Stubborn man.
You knew Marvin was with Ava. That dog had become your little girl’s shadow. You swore to this day he’d known you were pregnant before you did. He’d liked you and stuck by you when Frankie wasn’t around but he’d become absolutely clingy before you even noticed something was up. It had weirded you out at first when he’d started following you around and laying his head in your lap but it all made sense after you’d gone to the doctor and found out you were pregnant.
Frankie had told you that when he’d got Marvin that the shelter had warned him that there was a good possibility that he wouldn’t be good with kids. That he wasn’t fond of fast movements and how loud children could be. But that shelter couldn’t have been more wrong. Marvin loved Ava possibly more than he loved Frankie. He was the first one there when she cried, followed her around when she started to crawl, and even let her dress him up when she wanted to have a tea party. Not only that, but he’d given up sleeping with you and Frankie and stayed with Ava instead.
Flex was still your baby, but he’d taken to Frankie a little more because he was the one who was taking him out. It was easier now that you guys had a yard and were farther from the road. It was one of the things that had sold you and Frankie on this house. You had moved here about a year and a half after you’d moved into his apartment when you’d found out you were pregnant. Frankie wanted a place that would be big enough for the five of you and to give the dogs a place to run.
You had agreed immediately. You wanted the peace that living outside of the city would give you. Living here reminded you of the cabin you’d stayed at when you’d gone on the first long road-trip with Frankie to meet his friends. It had lived up to the expectations too. There were many nights you and Frankie had fallen asleep on the porch to the sounds of the summer and you wouldn’t trade any of that for the city life.
True to Will‘s word, he and Benny had all helped you and Frankie move again and Pope had actually managed to get some time off so he could come too. It was good to see them all, even if this time you had to dodge four people instead of just one when you tried to help. Every single one of them was overprotective and would barely let you lift a finger. It was just as sweet as it was infuriating.
You were pulled out of your thoughts when a little hand tugged at your shirt. You smiled down at your daughter and picked her up when she held up her arms. “Hi, baby,” you said with a grin.
“I can’t find my flip flop, mama,” she said instead of a greeting, holding her leg up to show you she only had one shoe on.
You chuckled and placed her on the counter. “I think I saw it in the living room so don’t move, okay, Ava?”
“Yes, mama,” she said as you started to walk away only to stop short when Frankie rounded the corner with the matching flip flop in his hand.
“Not the living room, I found this…” he waved the tiny flip flop in his hand, “in the back of the Tahoe.” He placed a hand on your side and kissed your forehead as he passed. “How‘d you get up on the counter, nena?” he asked, slipping her other shoe on before setting her back on the floor.
“Mama put me,” she said simply, the little tattletale.
You rolled your eyes at Frankie‘s look. “It’s not like I was carrying her,” you pointed out. When he didn’t answer you decided to distract your daughter so you could actually talk to him. “Go grab your bag, Ava. Daddy needs to put it in the car.”
“Okay, mama!” And with that she ran back upstairs to get the bag she’d left behind.
Once she was out of earshot you took the three steps to get into his space and placed a hand on his chest. “Frankie, I’m fine. And I don’t mean the fine that women say when they’re actually not, I mean I’m okay. Good even.”
He dropped his eyes before he nodded. After a deep breath he cupped the back of your neck and pulled you to him, his lips pressing against your forehead. “I know, I just…”
“I know.”
~*~
An hour later you were strapping Ava into her car seat as Frankie got the dogs in the back and checked the luggage again, making sure you all hadn’t forgotten a thing. You gave Ava a ziplock bag of Cheetos and helped her with her headphones before you started the movie for her.
While you checked her straps again, she smiled up at you, mouth already orange from the Cheeto dust. She hadn’t waited to dig into the bag, like always, she’d cracked it open the moment you’d handed it to her.
You ran a hand over her curls, double checked the child locks, and then met Frankie behind the SUV.
He gripped your hand and pulled you to him, one hand cupping the back of your neck with the other landed on your lower back. When he started to massage both places your knees almost gave out it felt so good.
“Fuck, Frankie…”
A deep chuckle rumbled out of his chest as he pressed his nose in your hair. “Feel good, hermosa?” He rasped, tilting his head to nip at your ear.
You gasped, fingers digging into his sides as you tried to hold back your moan. With Ava, alone time with Frankie was few and farther between than either of you would like, so moments like this weren’t taken for granted.
He spun you away from the trunk and shut the door. Before you could react, he had you pressed up against the back of the Tahoe, his lips brushing yours. You surged forward, pressing your lips fully against his. His thigh slid between your legs causing you to gasp into his mouth, which he took full advantage of. Your hips started to move on their own, it felt so good. His leg and his mouth and...Shit. And you were so close…
A sharp kick to your rib caught you off guard, causing you to pull your mouth away from his with a hiss.  Instantly Frankie was looking at you with concern.
“What happened? Did I hurt yo…”
“No,” you panted, trying to catch your breath from not only the kiss but the pain as well. “Kick to the rib,” you explained.
Frankie’s face relaxed and then slipped his leg out from between yours the moment over as quickly as it started. His hands dropped to rub your sides gently. You felt his silent chuckle when you dropped your head down onto his chest.
“I was so close,” you whined.
Frankie pressed his lips to the top of your head and tilted your head back to meet his dark hooded eyes. “I’ll make it up to you tonight when we get to the cabin,” he promised. “Even if we have to distract Ava with her uncles for an hour.”
You cupped the back of his neck and pulled him to you to press your lips to his. “I’m holding you to that, Morales.”
He winked at you as he pressed his lips to the back of your hand. Once he led you to the door he helped you up into your seat you watched him in the rearview mirror pluck Ava’s headphones off her head and give her kisses all over her face to the sounds of her laughter.
He put the headphones back on her and then walked around to the drivers seat before he got you all on the road. Instead of laying his hand on your thigh, he rubbed at your belly, pressing it flat against it when he felt the baby kick. You watched his smile grow as you covered his hand with yours.
When Pope had called, it had taken a lot of convincing on your part to get Frankie to even agree to go. You hadn’t had the easiest pregnancy with Ava and had even had a few scares in the later months, but everything with this one was going well. You’d had to send in the mini reinforcements to finally seal the deal. Frankie had a hard time telling her no. And when she begged to see her cousins, he’d finally given in. Will had a son with his wife that was a little older than Ava and Benny’s girlfriend had just given birth to his daughter about five months ago. Pope was still the same ol’ bachelor he’d been when you'd met him, but he loved all those kids like he was blood and they loved him right back.
In the weeks leading up to the trip, you could tell Frankie was tense. So one night after Ava had gone to bed, you’d made him talk about it. It only took a few hours before you two had come to a compromise. You both had even looked into the hospital in the area, and decided to book the cabin that was the closest to it, just in case. Anything to ease Frankie’s mind because when he was stressed, you were stressed.
As much as you wanted to lean against his arm and sleep like you had all those years ago, with your six month baby bump, moving around was already hard enough. So instead you just ran your fingers up and down the bare skin of his arm. “You know if she likes this, she’s going to want to do it all the time,” you said, leaning your head against the headrest and turning to Frankie.
“I know,” he said with a huffed laugh. “But I think the next time we’ll have another little one to worry about.” His thumb rubbed your belly again before he dropped it to your thigh.
“You’re not going to hear me complain,” you said with a wince as you tried to get comfortable, only to get another kick for it in return.
“I’m sorry, mi sol,” he said softly, his brow furrowed as he took his eyes off the road just long enough to make sure you were okay. “If I could take the pain…”
“I know, baby.”
He gave your leg a squeeze, nodding to himself. “Try and get some sleep, mi alma.” He took your hand and pressed a kiss to it before he tangled your fingers together. “We should be there in a few hours. But if you need me to stop, just tell me.”
Ansel Road Apartment Buildings Historic District
1588 Ansel Rd.
Cleveland, OH
The Ansel Road Apartment Buildings Historic District is a historic residential district, from 1588 Ansel Rd. to 9501 Wade Park Ave., in the Hough neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. The district consists of eight contributing and one non-contributing multi-family residential buildings built between 1900 and 1949. In 1897, Cleveland resident John D. Rockefeller donated about 130 acres of his personal property to the city of Cleveland. This land, which ran on either side of Doan Brook, was named Rockefeller Park, and became one of the city's premier parks. Ansel Road was one of the major thoroughfares in the area. It ran along the western heights overlooking the broad Doan Brook valley, and was one of the areas earliest roads. It was paved in 1907, and became a heavily traveled boulevard along Rockefeller Park.
     With the establishment of Rockefeller Park and its gradual development over the next 30 years, Ansel Road became one of Cleveland's choicest neighborhoods. Relatively large middle-class and upper-middle-class homes were built on the west side of the street, facing the park. In 1899, the Wade Park Avenue Bridge (designed by prominent Cleveland architect Charles F. Schweinfurth) opened. This bridge carried East Boulevard (later Liberty Boulevard, and still later Wade Park Avenue) over the park, and helped to provide greater accessibility to the neighborhood.  Beginning in 1910 and ending in 1928, several apartment buildings of varying size were built between Talbot Avenue and Wade Avenue. The first of these was the 1910 Overlook, a luxury three-story apartment building with units ranging from three to seven rooms in size.
    Rockefeller Park Towers, at 1588 Ansel Road, is a six-story apartment building that was designed by architect Herbert Bishop Beidler for the Park Hall Improvement Company, and completed in 1926. It was originally known as Devon Hall, a residential hotel for young women. It was later the Evangeline Home, an apartment house for homeless, unwed pregnant, and orphan girls run by the Salvation Army. The building was sold in 1961 to the Alpha Kappa Alpha African American sorority, which used it as a training center.  The area was designated a National Historic District and listed with the National Register of Historic Places on July 2, 2008.
...
4 - Back to December
...
Jay jumped out of the truck and ran towards the house, Hailey racing after him. He spotted his mom standing on the porch and pushed through the crowd of neighbors to get to her. Hailey stayed on his tail, not wanting to get lost in the commotion.
He immediately wrapped his mom in a hug, checking her for any signs of injury. “Are you okay? What happened?” He asked frantically.
Jane looked past her son at the girl standing behind him. “I’m fine. Your father…” She trailed off, she knew how secretive Jay was about his problems, especially when it came to Pat Halstead.
Hailey sensed the awkwardness and smiled softly. “I’ll just wait at the truck, or I can call my aunt?”
Jay sighed, he had completely forgotten that Hailey was there. “No, I’ll drive you home, just, uh, give me a few minutes.” Hailey nodded, wanting to remove herself from the situation as fast as possible. Jay turned back to his mother. “What happened?”
“I got home a little while ago and I found your father passed out on the floor, I couldn’t get him to wake up so, so I panicked and called 911.” Jay hugged his mother once more, letting out a breath of relief. Thankful that this particular incident wasn’t connected to Erin. “Go, take your friend home. I’m fine really, I think your dad is convincing them to let him stay here.”
“Are you sure? I don’t want to leave you alone.” Jay searched her face for any inconsistency, but she was solid.
Jane smiled, “I promise. I’ll see you later.”
Hailey watched Jay walk toward her, he was obviously upset. His jaw was clenched and there was an unnatural intensity to his walk. “Everything okay?” She asked as he neared her.
“Yeah,” He snapped. “Let’s go.” Hailey tried not to be hurt by his harsh words, everything wasn’t okay and she wasn’t about to push him on the subject.
The drive back to her house was quiet and tense. Neither of them spoke ,Jay kept his eyes trained on the road and Hailey scrolled through instagram. She wasted no time jumping out when he pulled in her driveway. “Thanks.” She squeaked before shutting the door behind her.
Jay rolled down the passenger side window. “Hailey.” He called after her.”Are you going to be okay?” She nodded and disappeared through the front door.
Jay felt like shit as he drove away, he didn’t want to leave her there alone, but he wasn’t close to good company right now and the last thing he needed was Hailey asking a bunch of questions. He chose to ignore his issues with his father the same way that his father chose to ignore him. However, his mom was a different story. He wasn’t sure what was affected more by Pat’s drinking problem, his dad’s liver or Jane. Will used to share the burden with him, but he was off at college now. Jay had to face the music alone.
A few hours later, Hailey stood in the middle of the school supplies section in Target with Adam and Kim. Unfortunately the world doesn’t stop turning when you’re dealing with a stalker/psycho/murderer situation, which meant school was still starting next week.
Adam groaned, glancing down at the list in his hand. “Why did I decide to take AP Chem?”
“To impress me.” Kim throws back, Hailey smirks while Adam throws her a bored look.
“Haha, very funny.” He grumbles and pulls a composition notebook off the shelf. “Do you think Griffin will like me better if I get the one covered with scientific formulas?” He asked, holding up a notebook with slope intercept form and the quadratic formula written all over.
Kim pulls it out of his hands, “Um, I don’t think so.” Adam gives her a look. “Adam these are beginner math formulas, Algebra 2 stuff.”
Adam throws his head against the shelving. “I’m so screwed.”
“Oh, one hundred percent.” Hailey says, earning a laugh from Kim. “Kim I don’t know why you’re taking 5 APs.”
“I’m getting my capstone.” She says, sorting through her different color organized 5-Star notebooks.
Hailey laughed, “You are like one class away from it. But, I’m glad you are because now our schedules are almost identical.”
Adam houghed, “I have 3 classes with Jay’s moody ass.”
Hailey was about to say something, the events of that morning playing in her head, but Kim beat him to it. “Imagine if it was me, if I was the one missing and you had to watch him and Erin be happy.”
Adam sighed, realizing he sounded like a complete dick before, “I know. It’s just, Jay and I have played on the same team since little league. We’ve been friends for years, since way before Erin. I know it’s selfish but I thought losing her meant I got Jay back.” Hailey felt for Adam, he wasn’t one to express himself so openly, at least to her.
Kim took his hand in hers, “We’ll get him back, he needs closure.” She looked to Hailey, “We all do.”
Hailey wasn’t sure if it was really closure that they all needed, they needed to figure out who was threatening them. As far as they knew, no texts had come through since breakfast, but Hailey couldn’t shake the constant feeling of being watched. It felt strange, wrong even, to be back to school shopping in the middle of all this. But clinging to any sense of normalcy seemed to be a theme throughout the group.
They wandered through the rest of the isles, Kim convincing Adam that they didn’t need 3 cases of double stuff oreos for movie night. They rounded the corner and Kim gasped, yanking them both back behind the wall. “Ohmigod, Adam. I think that’s Nadia.”
“What? There’s no way.” He said.
Kim nudged him, “See for yourself.”
Adam poked his head out and quickly turned back to face them, eyes wide. “Holy shit, that’s Nadia.”
“I told you!”
Hailey looked between the two of them, who looked like they were about to pee their pants. “Who the hell is Nadia?”
Later that night, continuing the never ending day, the whole scooby gang sat around a firepit on Kim’s porch. Kim insisted that Hailey call Kevin and Adam call Jay as soon as they snuck out of Target and tell them to meet at her house. Hailey still didn’t know what was going on, she didn’t know who this Nadia girl was, but she was sure she had something to do with Erin.
“Okay,” Hailey said, interrupting the nervous chatter. “Is anyone going to tell me who this girl is?”
“Well, not to be weird but, you kinda took her place.” Kim explained.
“Huh?”
Jay spoke up, “She and Erin grew up together, where most of the rest of us met the first week of freshman year.”
“She was the third girl, a little closed off, only really trusted Erin.” Kim said.
“And she had a huge crush on Jay.” Adam butted in.
“Yeah.” Jay spat, “Anyway, Erin was always the jealous type, we started dating around Thanksgiving and by Christmas, Erin had enough dirt on Nadia to get her expelled.”
“Are you serious?” Hailey questioned.
Kim nodded, “Erin blackmailed her out of town, none of us have heard from her since New Years, freshman year. And none of us know what actually happened. Erin told us that she was “a little skank who couldn’t be trusted” and that she had planned to ruin us all. She was protecting us, but now that all seems so stupid.”
“Yeah,” Kevin joined in, “We were horrible to that girl.”
Hailey’s gears were turning over, her mind was running wild. Nadia had to be connected to all of this. Suddenly, Erin’s phone, which was always with Jay, buzzed on the ground.
Blocked ID: I see the whole gang is there. Time to turn up the heat. I know who you all hold dear, the golden boy is also a momma’s boy, the athlete is in the running for fake father of the year, the mystery’s love for her brothers isn’t as much of a secret, the princess isn’t the only one in line for the throne and the heartbreaker, well now there’s someone who could break his. Follow my rules and your loved ones stay safe, don’t, and there will be many funerals in your future. Let the games begin.
Everyone was silent after Jay read the text aloud. It wasn’t just them, everyone they loved were in danger too. Hailey spoke up, airing out her theory. “Think about it. Who in the world hates Erin the most? Who shows back up right after Erin is supposedly gone for good? Who would know all of your secrets? Nadia, guys.” She looks to the rest of her friends, all of them thinking the same thing. “Nadia took Erin.”
...
A/N: For the purposes of this story, Jay’s mother’s name is Jane and Will is older. I know that it differs from the show, but I think for this Will being older works better. Also, I don’t think I had ever mentioned before how long Erin and Jay had been dating, but now it’s a year and a halfish.
Within my group’s project theme; performance, I decided to focus specifically on theatre. In this playlist I focused mostly on the musical theatre genre, which was born out of theatre. Included are songs from Broadway musicals, or movies that were adapted from those musicals. There are a few songs from Disney musicals, and two honorable mentions from Mitski, an artist who I feel captures the beauty within the loneliness people tend to feel at night perfectly. I tried to recreate the ‘ups and downs’ of a night out in the city. Beginning with a need for escape, we are then travelling out to the city and excitement builds. We are dazzled by all the beauty that the city at night has to offer. This beauty is created mostly by the performers, the entertainers, and those who work within the nighttime economy. During our night, we might get into trouble, we might find romance or we might romanticize, and finally towards the end of the night we return home. The duration of the playlist is one hour and thirteen minutes.
Below, are the songs that are included in the playlist. We begin with “Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera, one of the most popular and longest running musicals in the history of Broadway. This song is entirely about discovering how splendid night can be. We can see this in many of the lyrics, for example, “Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation / Darkness wakes and stirs imagination / Silently, the senses abandon their defenses.” (Weber, 1987) , and it is a perfect opener for our playlist.
The next four songs give us the feeling of making the decision to venture out into the night. “Wig in a Box” from Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the story of a drag queen as they get into drag. One of the many performative subcultures that thrives in nighttime, before the popularity of RuPaul’s Drag Race propelled many drag queens to major celebrity status. “Out Tonight” from Rent tells of the danger and excitement, the transgressions one is more likely to commit once darkness falls; “I wanna commit a crime / Wanna be the cause of a fight / I wanna put on a tight skirt / and flirt with a stranger” (Larson, 1996).
Once we figuratively arrive in the city, we enjoy some songs highlighting the work of performers, labourers, and entertainers. Burlesque performers and sex workers from “Welcome to Burlesque” sung by Cher, to “Lady Marmalade” sung by Christina Aguilera. “Our Lady of the Underground” from Hadestown features the goddess Persephone as she deals illegal substances, like sunlight or rainfall, to members of the underworld. Dr. Facilier, played by Keith David, in “I Got Friends on the Other Side” plays a similar role. Both of which profit heavily on the nighttime economy where the trade of illegal substances or occult happenings are more popular.
From “Tonight” in the musical West Side Story to “Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me” in The Rocky Horror Picture Show we focus on songs that tell of a certain romance. These songs don’t necessarily feature performers and labourers of the nighttime economy, but fleeting romances may take place at night nonetheless, and I felt that songs that perform such a feeling were important to include. Socializing and attempting to find love is a large reason why people go out at night.
The remaining four songs in the playlist are slower. The energy winds down as the hours start to dwindle into the early morning. They are songs that reminisce and that try to capture a memory. Night is ephemeral, and once it is over we have our splendid memories to ruminate on until we have the chance to experience it again.
