Virginia Beach III
Up early for sunrise over the Atlantic then off to Hillier Ignite Fitness Park to hit the rings. I like these workout centers on the beach. It reminds me of the one in Santa Monica. Then Dunkin Donuts for coffee and donuts for the kids.
Soon it’s time to pay the piper. The oceanfront room, listed on the door for $1000 a night, is free for four nights under an arrangement to meet with corporate folks to explain their timeshare program. We’ve had comparable meetings before under similar circumstances. One of these experiences, I just remembered, is documented in the story “The Perfect Martini” in my collection of stories, Keeper of the Rise. Shameless self-promotion (I’m afraid it’s all downhill from here). In other words, we know the drill and there’s no way around our meeting at 945 a. m.
The presentation is good and the offer is, in fact, excellent but the Idealist can’t drop $3,500 on a timeshare program he doesn’t really understand. Heck, we haven’t even seen this year’s tax return yet. What was scheduled to be 90 to 120 minutes turns into three hours. The main reason we didn’t invest, though, was because the program wouldn’t cover our trip to Hawaii at the end of the year and our rep couldn’t offer up a good place to eat, which struck me strange. Anyway, I’m a huge fan of service and the processes involved in providing an experience and this study was worth the time. Soon we’re in the sun on the beach with the kids and everything is perfect again. Today will be the nicest day of the week.
We head to Murphy’s Irish Pub for a Happy Hour extravaganza of oysters, wings, shrimp, and superloaded nachos. It’s nice enough to eat outside and the servier is friendly and accommodating and we’re grateful.
Afterwards, we walk around taking pictures then stop at Catch 31 at the hotel for a drink. It’s the liveliest place on the Boardwalk. We wind up at a sidewalk bar on Atlantic and order a pizza for the room. By nightfall we’re watching a movie on HBO, Barbarian.
The wife had never seen it. On the tablet I’m reading Edward Bunker’s No Beast So Fierce and soon I’m fast asleep dreaming of jewelry heists dreaming of jewelry heists.

Hello love! May I humble request number 20 from the friends to lovers with out soft Bear Clyde?
Hello there! I hope you like this! Clyde Logan x Reader Content: Kinda angsty? Like, mild angst? Fluff/Romance; friends-to-lovers (more like "old friends" to possible lovers)
It had been two months since Jimmy had gotten your number from Mellie who got it from Kelly at the beauty parlor who got it from her mother who got it from your mother. Apparently, Jimmy Logan had finally gotten a smartphone and learned about "Groupon". He'd been driving everybody crazy with that app--making decisions on where to eat and what to do based on what was available on it. He called you one evening asking if you knew of any good hotels near Virginia Beach. You knew that he really wanted you to offer your home, and you had no issue with that. Especially when you found out Clyde was coming with him.
You'd been living in Virginia Beach for well over a decade now, but you still kept in contact with your close friends and family in Boone. Clyde wasn't particularly a "best friend" of yours, but you always had a sweet spot for him. From middle school to high school, in exchange for math homework help, you always gave Clyde something off of your lunch tray--be it your pizza, your chocolate milk, or your French toast sticks. It was an appreciated but not particularly grand collaboration--nothing that prompted you to become an item or even best friends.
You'd heard about his accident in Iraq and had always wanted to reach out to him, but you always brushed the thought away--scared that you would say something offensive, or come off as if you were pitying him. So, now was your chance to see him once again, and continue your adolescent partnership. This time, your home in exchange for memories.
Jimmy, his girlfriend Sylvia, his daughter Sadie, and Clyde were riding out to the beach to see the oceanfront light show they put on every Christmas down at the beach. You personally had never been, and contrary to what the folks back home believed, living in Virginia Beach didn't mean that you had a glass house overlooking the Atlantic. But Jimmy had enough Groupon deals saved for a weekend of fun near the water and far away.
You were peering into your crockpot--gazing at the bubbling chili you'd started--when you heard the creak of your hardwood floors. Jimmy, Sylvia, and Sadie had gone to the grocery store to pick up hot dogs, hamburgers, and steaks. Jimmy had insisted that you make use of the indoor grill you'd allowed to collect dust for three years, despite it being smack in the middle of fall.
Clyde stepped into the kitchen. You smiled over your shoulder as you stirred the chili.
"Good mornin'," you said.
"Good mornin'...sorry I slept so late," Clyde said. You shook your head and re-covered the crockpot.
"That's alright." You turned to face your old friend. He'd changed so much since you'd last seen him. His hair was at his shoulders, covering the ears he often got teased about. He was still just as tall as he was when you'd graduated, though. Only bulkier. Thicker, one might say.
"Too many Moscow mules last night," he joked.
You giggled as you walked to your Keurig, grabbed a pod, and prepared some coffee. "I didn't expect you to be such a lightweight, Clyde Logan."
Clyde brushed his hair out of his face and chuckled. "I usually don't drink much. Just beer."
When you'd popped the pod in, you leaned against your counter to face Clyde, and folded your arms.
"Funny how that works. Writers never write much. Chefs don't like cooking when they get home. Bartenders don't drink that much."
"That's always how it goes, huh?"
"Mmm-hmm..." you said with a nod. Suddenly, silence befell the room. All you could hear was random music coming from your neighbor's apartment, and the whirring and sizzling of the Keurig machine.
"I'm sorry if I offend you," Clyde started. You raised an eyebrow, but he continued. "...but, I really was expectin' you to be married."
You raised both eyebrows in shock, and tilted your head to make sure you'd heard right.
"I always wanted to find your number, but was scared some man was gonna answer the phone," he said, adding a half-hearted laugh at the end. "Thought about you all the time in Iraq. After Iraq. Still do think about you..."
You stared at Clyde in awe. "You serious?"
"My biggest regret was never askin' you out," Clyde said--so calmly, but his words still hit you like a sudden lightning bolt.
Clyde started chewing his lip and shifting his weight from foot to foot, but he soldiered on.
"I hope I don't sound creepy or nothin' like that, but since we were kids, I planned to marry you someday..."
You turned around and opened your cupboard door to avoid Clyde's gaze. But you'd forgotten why you wanted to go in the cupboard, anyway.
"I never knew you felt that way," you said. Finally, you grabbed two red mugs and placed them on the counter. Then, you turned to face him. "If I'm being honest, I probably wouldn't have been interested back then..."
"I know," Clyde said. He leaned against the wall and put his hands in his pockets. "That's why I never asked..."
You pressed your lips together and turned to face your Keurig--to avoid Clyde's sweet, longing gaze again.
"Would you ask me out now?" you inquired.
Footsteps ascended on you, and suddenly, a warmth came over your backside. The light over your kitchen was suddenly blocked--a large shadow casted onto your counter and cupboard. But the shadow shifted, and Clyde stood beside you. He rested his hip against your counter, and leaned his right elbow against it--making himself level with you.
"Would you want me to?"

Navin Week Day 1: Thanksgiving
Pairing: Gavin Reed x Nic Blake
Summary: Nic goes on a trip down memory lane and brings Gavin with her
Word count: 2.2k+
From the moment they met, Gavin knew Nic didn’t get along with her family. He never met her parents, and didn’t push to unless she wanted him to. And from the start she made it clear that she was not in any way ashamed of him, but of her parents. When Nic moved to Detroit she only brought with her the memories she wanted, leaving behind practically her whole life. Sometimes Gavin felt guilty about this, and Nic would remind him she did it of her own free will. She hasn’t looked back since, so when she came to Gavin one afternoon and told him she wanted to visit her hometown for Thanksgiving, Gavin was taken by surprise. He loved his wife, he really did, but sometimes her ideas were questionable at best. But upon seeing the pleading look in her eyes, he agreed without question.
He took a week off from work since they’d be in Virginia Beach for a week. Nic seemed excited, she talked nearly nonstop on the flight about all of her old stomping grounds that she was going to take him to. The hotel they were staying at was right by the beach which Nic did purposely. By the time they landed she was practically vibrating in her seat. A taxi ride to the car rental office and they headed to unpack. It was much warmer than Gavin expected—he was only used to weather in Detroit. While it was still chilly, there was no snow which only slightly surprised him. By early November Detroit was normally covered in a thin layer of white but there was just a bitter cold that wrapped the city of Virginia.
Gavin noticed Nic’s driving was much better than it was in Detroit. He figured it had something to do with that she grew up on these streets and knew how native Virginians drove. The hotel was nice, Nic having booked them a room with a balcony that overlooked the beach (“We call it the Oceanfront, the Beach is the city. You’ll get used to the slang.” She explained as some point). It was only eleven in the morning so Nic eagerly requested that she drive him all the way to her favorite childhood bakery in the next city, Norfolk. It was at least an hour drive to said bakery, and upon arrival Nic was bouncing on her heels as she dragged him to the mud green, rusty exterior bakery with large words on the sign saying “The French Bakery”. His wife quickly explained how she had been going there since she was small and that she knew the owners almost personally. This reigned true as she opened the door, a small bell ringing and an older middle eastern gentleman coming from the back to greet the customers only to break out in a grin and calling Nic by an old name long forgotten. She smiled and once they reached the counter, she leaned over and hugged him as he exclaimed that it had been too long since her last visit. She introduced Gavin who was greeted just as warmly, however he felt out of place. Nic ordered two pastrami sandwiches along with a long list of desserts that Gavin knew would give them both stomach aches that night. In his opinion they spent too much money but the grin on his wife’s face made it worth it. As they drove back to their hotel, both eating their lunch and making a mess of the front seats, Nic went on to tell him how she was surprised to find the bakery still open and how she expected it be out of business. Gavin listened intensely, devouring his meal and coming to the conclusion that the expense was well spent.
They spent the afternoon unpacking and eating the desserts bought, and both went to bed with stomach aches. Nic said it was worth it.
The next morning Gavin woke up early and ordered room service, wanting to get an early start that day. Nic woke up at half past seven, and that was late in Nic’s opinion. She woke up to pancakes with blueberry syrup and a cup of coffee, and Gavin half soaked wearing nothing but a towel as he stepped out of the shower.
That day she took him to the golf course with a long winded story of how that exact golf course is where she had her seventh birthday party and she hadn’t played a game of golf since. Her inexperience showed as she lost the game, a score of 130 to Gavin’s 80. He still questioned how she managed to get such a high score on an 18 hole course. After the game they got lunch at one of the many restaurants that rested on the strip that was the Oceanfront. Many shops were closed, Nic telling him that they normally closed for the winter since there weren’t any tourists. Virginia was a tourist heavy spot during the summer, something Nic loathed in her youth. After lunch, Gavin was dragged to the many stores that stayed open. Some of them had useless souvenirs, others had neat collectibles or stones that seemed to interest Nic. She left Virginia at nineteen and coming back home after nearly a decade gave her a large wave of nostalgia. She wanted to show Gavin everything she enjoyed, although they only had a week which wasn’t enough time in her opinion.
That night, she dragged Gavin to her favorite barbecue restaurant. It was the best barbecue Gavin had in a while and he was disappointed that it’s so far away. He joked a bit that they’d have to fly down to Virginia again if he ever gets in the mood for barbecue. That night was the first time Gavin has also seen Nic so relaxed. She really seemed to be enjoying this trip on memory lane, focusing on all of the positives.
They went to bed that night in a pile of limbs as they cuddled, Gavin suggesting they come back again for her birthday.
The next few days were blurs as Nic dragged him to several different places, all of which held special places in her memory. At one point, Nic brought him to her old high school to visit her favorite World History teacher who happened to still be teaching at that school. They talked to the class, a mix of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, with a lone senior. Some of students seemed to be fascinated with Nic, asking mostly questions about college and studying advice since she had been in their exact spot. She was disappointed when it was time to leave, but she managed to catch her old English teacher as well last minute as they were leaving campus. He told her about the Holiday Thrift Shop the school held every year about Thanksgiving. Nic insisted to Gavin they go before leaving for Detroit. They did go, buying some trinkets such as healing rings that Nic insisted on using for her wrists.
The second to last of their trip was Thanksgiving Day, and Nic has something special planned for them. She drove them out for two hours, not bothering to tell Gavin where they were headed. The moment Gavin notices the sign with the word “cemetery” in it, he had a good feeling what was going on. They parked in the loop, walked through the crunchy, frost covered grass down rows and rows of gravestones. They finally arrived at the gravestone with two familiar names and dates. Those names and dates were tattooed on Nic’s forearm.
With hands stuffed in her pockets, Nic spoke quietly. “Hey grandma, hey grandpa.” She smiled softly, and Gavin saw tears forming in the corners of her eyes. “I know it’s been a long time… too long, honestly. But I didn’t forget about you. I didn’t forget about where I came from. I just needed a chance to find me.” She shrugged, giving a teary smile to the grave. “I found her. I had to lose a lot of family on the journey but… I think it was worth it. Besides, they wouldn’t like who I am now anyways. I know you two would though. Yeah, you were always proud of me no matter what.” Nic looked over at Gavin and held out her hand to him. He took it, tangling their fingers together as he rubbed his thumb over her wedding ring. “I want y’all to meet someone.” Gavin almost laughed. Her accent had gotten stronger since being there. “This is my husband, Gavin. He’s really good to me, and I love him a lot. I know if given the chance, y’all would have loved him too.”
He cleared his throat, not wanting to intrude in the moment but feeling the need to speak. “I promise I’ll take care of her.” He brought her hand up and kissed it. “Always.”
On the way back from the cemetery, Nic stopped by a small family owned diner. She ate there every time she would visit her grandparents’ grave and got to know the family that owned it. It originally owned by a lovely old woman named Ruth, and her husband. They have children, and two of their daughters worked in the diner alongside their parents. After the passing of Ruth and her husband, their oldest daughter took over the diner along with her sister, now both sisters and their children ran it. To say the diner was family friendly was an understatement. Nic insisted that Gavin get the clam chowder, her favorite soup of all time. He enjoyed it a lot more than he expected.
That evening, they went to the gift shop on the boardwalk and got some fudge. Nic got it every time she went to the Oceanfront and stated that it was the last thing she ate before leaving Virginia. She got half a pound of her favorite dark chocolate caramel sea salt fudge. Gavin got a pound which gave him the option to pick four different flavors. He picked peanut butter, red velvet, chocolate pecan, and white chocolate. The fudge ended up being their dinner, once again giving the couple stomach aches to nurse for the night.
Their last day was more intimate. They spent a good portion of it in the hotel room, watching tv on the crappy hotel television and listening to the waves. Come afternoon, Nic went out to the beach to have a walk. She was barefoot and in shorts, walking in the shallow part of the ocean where the water barely reached her ankles. Gavin joined her after a few moments, not wanting her to experience this alone. Hand in hand, they walked the length of the beach and back in comfortable silence. The waves and the cawing of crows and hooting of pigeons filled their silence. They watched the sunset, night blanketing the earth and making the air too chilly for their liking. They went back inside the hotel, opting to take a nice warm shower to combat the cool air.
Gavin sat on the bed, flipping through channels with the remote in an effort to fight off the boredom gnawing at his mind as he waited for her to get out. God, he thought, she always takes the longest showers. When Nic finally did, pajamas on and hair still soaked despite ten minutes of drying it, she sat down in front of Gavin, smiling softly. He shut off the tv.
“Thank you for doing this,” she said, taking one of his hands in hers and playing with his scarred, calloused fingers.
“It’s no problem,” he replied. “I had a lot of fun.” There was a pause. “If you ever want to do this again, just let me know. I’ll take off and we can fly down, whether just for a day or a week, or a month…”
Nic snorted. “I cannot stay for a whole month. I would go insane. Virginia gets pretty boring after a while.”
“With the places you took me, hardly seems like there’s a dull moment.”
She pressed a kiss to his knuckles. “Yeah well, I took you to the fun places.” Her smile dropped as fell into deep thought.
Gavin knew that look. “Uh oh. What’s wrong?”
“Just…” she sighed, going back to playing with his fingers, “thinking.”
“About what?”
“I’m not gonna lie, when I planned this trip… I wanted you to meet my parents.”
“Nico–”
“I decided against it on the flight here. I realized, I should focus on the things that make me happy, like you and fudge and buying stupid souvenirs that we are never going to look at again.” She laughed, and Gavin laughed with her. “The positive memories are what made me come back, the negative ones should stay in the past.”
“I know you tell me how happy I make you, and I don’t doubt you about it, but…” Gavin tried to think of the right words. He never was a words guy. Hell, Abby helped him with his vows. But Nic didn’t marry him for his words. He continued, “But this is the happiest I’ve seen you in a long time. Your smile? I haven’t seen that one since our wedding day. So, once I saw that smile that you only break out for the purest moments, I knew this would be good for you.”
Nic tackles him onto the bed, her chin resting on his chest. “You’re so sappy.”
“Only for you.”
“I know.” She grinned. “I love you.”
“I love you too, nerd.”

It had been so long since I last visited the largest city in Virginia, that I treated my recent visit to Virginia Beach as a first experience. I’m glad I did too, because I discovered parts of the community that I would have otherwise missed and had an incredible experience along the way. I may be biased since I’m originally from Virginia, but I think there is a wealth of things to do throughout the Commonwealth and especially in the active community of Virginia Beach. If you’re visiting for a long weekend or even a longer escape, here are my favorite experiences that I think anyone will love. [I’m working with Virginia Tourism on this project but, as always, all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.]
The Cavalier Hotel
Historic hotels are unique in that yes, they offer incredible luxury, but they also have a certain quality that’s impossible to replicate. Their age and the many guests they’ve welcomed have created a patina of hospitality that, while not visible, is an important part of the experience. That’s especially true at the newly reimagined Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach. Originally built in 1927, almost immediately The Cavalier became a hotspot for the rich and famous. Thanks to nonstop trains from cities like Chicago, the halls of the hotel were soon filled with those who wanted to see and be seen. The Fitzgerald’s, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and several Presidents all were guests of the hotel and many say that The Cavalier is what put Virginia Beach on the map in the first place. This Golden Era came to an abrupt end though in World War II when the hotel was surrendered to the US Navy and became a site for radar training. Although the hotel was returned to its owner, it had lost its pizzazz and in the intervening decades lost the brilliance for which it had once been known. Several years ago though it was sold to new owners who went through an extensive renovation and restoration process and, somewhat miraculously, brought back the luxury and hospitality that made The Cavalier, now part of the Autograph Collection, famous during the Roaring Twenties. Everything at The Cavalier is done to perfection, from the quirky yet refined design to the food and of course the hospitality. The Cavalier originally put Virginia Beach on the map and it’s redefining it once again in the 21st century.
Paddling Around
There are few things I enjoy more than being out on the water. There’s just a certain peace of mind and solemnity that accompanies it, and getting a little exercise along the way is an added bonus. Sure, I spent time along the city’s famous beach, but for something a little different I joined a morning kayak tour with VB Surf Sessions. The company specializes in paddle boarding excursions, including one that visits local pubs, but it was the kayaking that grabbed my attention immediately. Rudee Inlet is located in the Virginia Beach Oceanfront District and is next to the Virginia Aquarium. Most folks know the inlet for its marinas and restaurants, but it’s also a great place to go for adventure sports. Paddling along the tall grasses of the estuary, we saw all kinds of wildlife, including eagles, osprey and more. But it was also just nice to paddle around, exploring small little waterways and appreciating Mother Nature in what I think is the best possible way.
Great Bites
I could, and I will, devote an entire post to the culinary side of Virginia Beach because it really was that impressive. Like so many other communities around the world, Virginia Beach has enjoyed a culinary renaissance in recent years, with creative chefs, brewers and even vintners opening shop and offering their visions to the local community. Although I don’t eat seafood, I do recognize it’s an important aspect of visiting Virginia Beach for most people which is one reason why I was excited to dine at the new(ish) Porch on Long Creek. Overlooking the beautiful Lynnhaven River, this is a light and airy space that specializes in American Coastal cuisine. Yes, their clear strength is fish and seafood (brought in fresh daily) but they have an expansive menu so that even a non-pescatarian like me can thoroughly enjoy the experience. Another great spot to enjoy a delicious night out is back at The Cavalier Hotel in their equally historic Hunt Room. Originally a quiet space for duck hunters to enjoy a meal in the early days of the hotel, that same rustic feel is what I first noticed walking into the new and impressive Hunt Room. A massive brick fireplace is at the heart of the room, creating a warm and inviting space that I loved right away. The menu is just as impressive with modern twists on Virginia classics, like the charcuterie board made with local meats and cheeses and even a delicious fried quail as a main course. This is also where you’ll find the hotel’s on-site distillery, Tarnished Truth. This, the first hotel distillery in the country, features several craft spirits, including bourbon, rye whiskey and even AVA Vodka. Guests can also take flight tastings, tours and cocktail lessons here.
For me, breakfast is always an important part of staying at the beach, and in Virginia Beach the clear winner is the locally famous May’s Parlor. Recently celebrating their two-year anniversary, this small cottage at the Oceanfront serves up incredible fresh-made pastries, along with cakes and pies and other light bites guaranteed to fuel your day. There’s a lot to love about eating your way around Virginia Beach and I think that, like me, you’ll leave both surprised and impressed.
Finding LOVE
Love is everywhere if you’re willing to look for it, but in Virginia that’s more true than you might realize. Most people know that the state has had the slogan “Virginia is for lovers” for 50 years but unless you’ve been to Virginia in the last couple of years, you may have missed these massive LOVE signs found in every corner of the state. The LOVEworks project encourages local communities to come up with their own unique take on the LOVE sign and so far there are more than 160 around the state. I love this for so many different reasons but especially because in a time of increasing negativity it’s a good reminder that most people everywhere are basically good hearted folks. Virginia Beach has several of these now iconic signs, which you can find via the official LOVEworks site. It’s a fun way to explore new regions and what you discover on the way to the signs is many times even more impactful than the works of art themselves.
Amazing History
As a Virginian, and someone who lived for quite a while in Williamsburg, I thought I had a strong grasp on the Commonwealth’s impressive history. But I was surprised to learn that Virginia Beach has a lot more to contribute to the story of the country than I originally thought, starting at First Landing State Park. The average American doesn’t realize that the first English settlers landed in Virginia and not Massachusetts and that original landing spot is here in Virginia Beach. First Landing State Park honors the 100 English settlers who landed there in 1607, before they headed further up the James River to Jamestown. It’s more than a simple commemoration though, it’s a massive 2,888-acre park that features miles of beachfront and more than 19 miles of trails through protected salt marsh habitat. It’s a beautiful area and appeals to just about any type of traveler no matter their interest. While you’re at the park, also be sure to visit another historic site, the Cape Henry Lighthouse. This was the first lighthouse commissioned in 1792 by the newly formed US Government and although there is now a newer one, albeit built in the 19th century, both are beautiful to behold. You can also climb to the top of the original lighthouse for incredible views of the region.
Fish Frenzy
Visiting a beach community also involves spending time inside as well, and in Virginia Beach I couldn’t wait to visit the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. In recent years I’ve been somewhat wary of zoos and aquariums and I make sure that they conduct research and important work as part of their mission, which is most definitely the case at the Virginia Aquarium. The facility is expansive and offers a terrific look at a variety of global ecosystems as well as native Virginia flora and fauna. In addition to the indoor exhibits, there’s also an outdoor nature trail running alongside Owls Creek Salt Marsh. I love how they intertwine the nature around them with the displays and together it’s a fun and definitely educational experience.
I honestly enjoyed my time in Virginia Beach a lot more than I thought it would. The community has changed a lot in recent years and the influx of creative individuals has left its mark on the city and surrounding region. But they haven’t lost sight of what made them popular in the first place and it’s how the traditional and the innovative are fused that fascinated me so very much. There’s also a lot more to see and do than I had time for, but hopefully this brief list has piqued your interest in visiting Virginia Beach.

While sunning yourself on the Virginia Beach resort sands, it is worth shaking off some grains to put on that little black dress before the sun rests. As you don’t want to miss the early entertainment at the newly renovated Cavalier Hotel. This historical gem holds tight to it’s 1927 roots of southern gentry charm. It's famed for being the inspiration behind F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. Join in for a guided tour of all the unique features and maybe you’ll get to waltz around like a gent or southern belle in the grand ballroom. Although, leave before midnight before being given the $533 bill for a room for the night.😀

~UNSOLVED~
Murders of Virginia Between 1973 & 1986, there were 11 Unsolved murders and 3 Unsolved disappearances in Virginia Beach, Virginia. All of the victims were young, pretty white women aged between late teens to mid twenties. The majority of the deceased victims were found strangled, most were murdered in the month of June and they were of slim-medium build. I will not detail all of the victims - just a few and I will give links to other places to seek the truth. So just what was going on in Virginia? The victims were as follows; 🔹June 30th 1973, Lynne Seethaler & Janice Pietropola. Both were 19 year old white women who were visiting VA Beach from Pennsylvania. They were both staying at Farrar's Motel close to the oceanfront. Their bodies were discovered by an employee of the motel after failing to check out. They had been staying there for approximately one week and had planned to leave on the 30th. Both had been not only strangled but beaten on their upper body. Lynne had her throat sliced as well as suffering two bullets to the head. Janice was sexually assaulted before being shot in the head 3 times. Despite checking in together, their bodies were found in separate rooms. Whilst there were no signs of a robbery, there were signs that a struggle had ensued. It is estimated they were killed early morning of the 30th as they were seen by motel guests and staff at 11:30pm the night of the 29th. Both women had long brown hair, but Lynne had brown eyes whilst Janice had blue. Had they been at the wrong place at the wrong time or was something else afoot? 🔸June 23rd 1974, Beverly Christensen. Beverly was a beautiful 24 year old white female with blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. She was medium build but petite standing at 5ft 5". Her mutilated body was found on 23rd June in her apartments on Arctic Avenue, just ten blocks from the Motel where two women had previously been murdered the year before. Beverly had more in common with the young ladies than just location. She was almost the same height as Janice, and like Janice and Lynne, she was strangled but instead of being shot, she was stabbed - repeatedly. 🔺January 24th 1977, Judy Ann Sylvester disappears. Judy was a young white female, at just 22 she was small at 5ft tall, she was petite and had long brown hair and beautiful blue eyes. Judy worked at a restaurant in Virginia Beach but lived in an apartment with her boyfriend in the northern part of Virginia. She usually rode her bike to work as she enjoyed keeping fit. Unfortunately on the morning of January 24th she didn't turn up for work and her boss alerted her boyfriend, who assures police she did leave for work with her bike. She is still missing to this day. She answers to the name Jai as it is a nickname given by her boyfriend and friends. At the time of her disappearance Judy was wearing her uniform and a handmade pendant necklace. Will she ever be found? 🔹 July 16th 1977, Lorraine Zimmerman. Lorraine was 24 at the time of her death. She had long hair and was an avid hiker, her own father is quoted as saying "she was a beautiful girl who knew no fear." Originally from Seattle, Lorraine was visiting friends in Norfolk. Lorraine was last seen leaving a nightclub in Virginia Beach, she was with an unidentified male. She disappeared July 16th 1977. Unfortunately Lorraine's body was discovered right before Christmas that year. It was 100 miles away from the last known sighting of her and the unidentified man. Just like the other murdered victims Lorraine was strangled. 🔺August 23rd 1978, Barbara Jean Monaco disappears. Barbara had just turned 18, she was a sweet, beautiful woman with kind brown eyes and long brown hair, from Derby, Connecticut. She and her older sister decided to go to Virginia Beach for a vacation just a few days after her birthday. The two girls were staying at Aloha Hotel for a week in August of '78. The girls decided to go to a bar, The Country Comfort, on the night of the 22nd. Due to being pestered by a man at the bar, who claimed he wanted to take Barbara on his yacht, she decided to leave. Barbara parted from her sister at approximately 1am on the 23rd. She walked 6 blocks to a bar called Peabody's, where known to her sister, she planned to meet a bartender. Unfortunately Barb never made it to Peabody's. She hasn't been seen or heard of since. There were alleged sightings of a young lady matching her description seen getting into a car (on Pacific Ave) with 4/5 men. On the night of her disappearance she was wearing a yellow long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, a brown belt and clog type shoes. Unbeknownst to her possible captors, Barb was blind in one eye and had a healed hairline fracture in her left arm. There have been some leads in Barbara's case and unfortunately they are saddening; ▪️Firstly - 8 months after her disappearance, her family offered a reward for info leading to finding her dead or alive. The reward was $10,000. An informant known as 'Candor' claimed to have witnessed her being sexually assaulted then murdered by four men on the night she vanished. He claimed she was forced into a Sedan on Pacific Avenue and drove to a Naval Air Force Base in Oceana, Virginia. He claims she was killed then dumped into a lake. The Lake near the base was completely combed through and whilst a rope tied to a brick was found, no human remains were. To make matters worse, 'Condor' stopped cooperating with officers when he found out he would not receive immunity for his role in such a crime. Without his testimony there is not enough evidence to convict anyone. ▪️Secondly - in 2001 a man named James L Moore Jr, known as Jimbo, gave officers information that he couldn't possibly have known unless he was with Barbara on the night of her disappearance. He was asked to take a polygraph test, but unfortunately just a few hours after speaking with Detectives, he committed suicide outside of his apartment. _______________________________________________ It is disheartening to know we may never truly know what happened to any of these women, nor the people who did/may have harmed them. Their murders & disappearances remain Unsolved. If you wish to know more about these and the rest of the victims then please check out; http://www.charleyproject.org/ Or the 3 part series http://wtkr.com/2011/04/29/searching-for-a-serial-killer-in-virginia-beach-part-1/
