The House Next Door (GRUHAM) movie review...

It's a 2017 tollywood movie.

I saw this horror movie in theaters. It's one of the best horror movies I have ever seen in local languages.

The story as the name suggests is a story about the main lead's neighbourhood's family. Two ghosts a mom and her young daughter haunt that family which moved as the neighbours of the main leads Krishnakanth and Lakshmi, a married couple.

The horror incidents don't look over the top and it looks so real as the flashback is about black magic done by a man in the same house a few years ago by killing any girl child he found including his own to get a boy child from his currently pregnant wife. The wife who couldn't see her daughter dead kills herself to take revenge on him by not delivering a baby boy because of which his ghost tries to accomplish this.

The ghost becomes successful at the end even after the family stops him from killing the little girl Sarah as his wife who was a pregnant woman delivers a boy called Rishi at the end of the movie, who is a ghost as he has two souls within him shown in his eyes and he happened due to the sacrifice that Chinese man made of his own daughter in the past before he died.

It's average in tamil and a disaster movie in hindi that's why it's an #a very underrated horror movie

#must watch as it's running for free of cost on jio cinema.

🍿 I finally found a good free copy of Bertolucci’s Novecento (”1900"), the full 5+ hours version, which I haven’t seen since it premiered. What an old-fashioned film-watching joy!

Retelling the history of Italy’s juggling the two opposing forces of fascism and communism as told through the lives of two men, one a land owner’s son and the other, still handsome peasant Gérard Depardieu. With lots of homoerotic subtext, De Nero frontal nudity, and other complex class-struggle subtexts. And with Ennio Morricone’s sweeping score and Vittorio Storaro’s spectacular canvases. 9/10.

🍿 The mission, one of the Vatican “15 recommended films about religion”. About a Spanish slave trader who turned Jesuit missionary in 1750′s Paraguay, full of search for redemption, Penance and struggles with faith. Exotic-Porn, shot beautifully out in the jungle. Produced during David Puttnam’s successful reign of the time. Featuring Liam Neeson and Goodfellas "Morrie" as the heavy. But like most films from the 1980′s, it lost all its luster for me. 4/10.

🍿 Greetings, Brian De Palma’s 2nd film, the first American film to receive an X rating and De Nero’s first major role. This ‘how to dodge the Vietnam war draft’ satire was so amateurish, I couldn’t stand more than 15 minutes of it.

All That Breathes, a new award-winning and Oscar-nominated Hindi language documentary. It poetically tells of 2 unassuming Indian brothers who rescue and treat injured black kite birds. 100% Rotten Tomato rating. The trailer.

🍿 Guadagnino’s second feature, Melissa P. A semi-pornographic ‘erotic drama’ about a 15-year-old girl’s journey of sexual discoveries. It opens with her masturbating in her room, and soon it moves on to her giving a blow-job to some jerk, being forced to participate in a threesome, gangbangs and in a bit of S&M. All in the name of her right to explore her desires, and told mostly from an off-putting (gay?) male gaze point of view. 4/10.

The creatures, my 9th by Agnès Varda, an experimental fantasy pairing Catherine Deneuve with Michel Piccoli, a year before ‘Belle de Jour’. He’s a science-fiction writer, and she’s his wife who went mute after a car accident. The line between reality and the writer’s vision for his book are blurred, but the effort feels dated and forced. Too artsy. 3/10

Life after death, a slight drama-comedy from Finland about an emotionally-stunted widower who wants to move on as soon as his wife dies, against his son’s need to mourn for her longer. 3/10

Vesper, my first film from Lithuania (In English, unfortunately). A somehow different post-apocalyptic Sci-fi story about a 13-year-old bio-hacker girl who lives in the forest with her paralyzed father. Organic tech and biological magic. 4/10.

First watch: Ernst Lubitsch’s 1942 Nazi farce To be or not to be. Making fun of Hitler the Hollywood way, by showing Gestapo officers as lecherous buffoons, Ha ha ha. Carole Lombard’s last film, and with young, good-looking Robert Stack. To paraphrase another quote from the comedy: What Lubitsch did to Shakespeare here, the Nazis were doing to Poland. 2/10

🍿 I was planning to follow-up with the Mel Brooks’ 1983 remake, but the original left such a bad taste in my mouth, that instead I randomly started a documentary in which Brooks stars - the irresistible The Automat. What a joyful surprise! A super-nostalgic love letter to the Horn & Hardart restaurant chain which thrived in NYC and Philadelphia in the first half of the last century. Absolutely enchanting from start to finish. With a delightful cover song, written and performed by Mel Brooks. (Photo Above). 8/10.

🍿 American History X, a very disappointing first watch. What may have been a courageous and nuanced analysis of contemporary racial hatred, rehabilitation and tolerance, seems didactic and quaint 25 years later - just like the shocking Nazi swastika tattoos. 1998 extremism is 2023 slice of life. 3/10.

A hard day, a Korean thriller about a young, corrupt policeman who runs over a guy while drunk driving, and then, trying to cover the killing, buries the body in the coffin of his mother who had died the same day. Standard, unbelievable execution about the always-corrupt Korean Police force. 3/10

First watch: Cult classic Myra Breckinridge, “one of the worst films ever made” and the mess that brought Mae West out of her 27-year retirement. A confused early ‘70′s look at sexual roles, sex change operations, female-on-male anal rape, femdom and Hollywood. A complete waste of talent. 2/10.

The concept sounds intriguing: A lowly Irish ‘Extra’ playing an English soldier on the set of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Barry Lyndon’ falls in love with an assistant director. The trailer looked dope. But the short Kubrick by candlelight was undeveloped and underwhelming. 2/10.

Marc Maron X 2:

🍿 Not being very familiar with comedian Marc Maron, but he opened his latest stand up From Bleak to Dark with this line: I don’t want to be negative, but I don’t think anything’s ever gonna gets better again, which captured my sentiment so perfectly, I was immediately hooked. Genial observations, well-delivered!

🍿 Since he‘s also an accomplished actor, I looked for something he played in. Unfortunately, I picked Get a Job (2016), because it also starred my crush Anna Kendrick (and dozens of other names, Bryan Cranston, John Cho, Nicholas Braun). But this cringy sit-com style dud was so listless, I could only last 25 minutes, before adding it to my “Too-Horrible-Couldn’t Finish-List”. 1/10.

I felt compelled to watch Game Night again, for the 3rd (!) time, and I’m not sure why. The relationship between Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams is so cute, and the story develops organically and perfectly. It’s such a fun and infectious action-comedy!

Some YouTuber Watched Every Oscar Best Picture Winner, so we don’t have to.

Lavatory Lovestory, a cute Oscar-nominated Russian Short about a lonely, romantic lady who works at a public toilet, a subject that is told not too often on film.

So this week I saw 2 great movies: Bertolucci’s '1900', the documentary ‘The Automat’, one repeat offender ‘Game night’ for the 4th time, plus Marc Maron’s stand-up ‘From Bleak to dark’. That’s a fairly typical number of good ones per week.

But I came to realize that most of the many other movies I watch every week are simply terrible. Under normal circumstances, and if I wasn’t on a mission (which I’m not sure yet what it is), I would never spend time on them.

Maybe I’ll try one week to only watch ‘Great’ movies, see how it feels to go through only the 'Best of the best'.

You thought movies were the only place to get your daily dose of horror? Oh you fool! You absolute FOOL! There are plenty of bingeworthy and scary horror TV shows out there and Hulu just happens to be a great place to find them.

Hulu is home to recent hits like The Terror and Castle Rock but there are still more scares to be found for the horror enthusiast willing to dig deep. Gathered here are some of the best and scariest horror TV shows that Hulu has to offer.

The Terror

Based on a 2007 book of the same name by Dan Simmons, The Terror season 1 tells a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin’s expedition to the arctic in 1845. In real life, the doomed men likely got lost and succumbed to the cold but the show asks “what if there was something more sinister than low temperatures lurking about?”

The Terror features a cast impressively full of “hey it’s that guy” guys like Jared Harris, Ciarán Hindis, and Tobias Menzes. It deftly turned itself into an anthology with the second season The Terror: Infamy that tells a ghost story within the setting of a Japanese interment camp in World War II.

American Horror Story

Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story is revolutionary in quite a few ways. Not only did it help usher in a renewed era of anthology storytelling on television, it also was arguably the first successful network television horror show since The X-Files.

Like all anthologies, American Horror Story has its better seasons (season 1 a.k.a. Murder House, season 2 a.k.a. Asylum, season 6 a.k.a. Roanoke) and its worse (season 3 a.k.a. Coven and season 8 a.k.a. Apocalypse). Still, for nine years and counting, American Horror Story has been one of the go-to options for TV horror fans.

Castle Rock

Stephen King properties have made their way to television before. There have been miniseries for classic King texts like The Stand and ‘Salem’s Lot and even full series for works like Rose Red and Under the Dome. Still, none of those series has had the audacity to adapt multiple aspects of the Stephen King universe itself…until Castle Rock.

Castle Rock takes multiple characters, storylines, and concepts from the vast works of Stephen King and puts them all in King’s own Castle Rock, Maine. The first season featured inmates from Shawshank prison, extended family of Jack Torrance, and maybe even a touch of the shine. The show opened itself up for more storytelling possibilities in season 2, adopting an anthology format and bringing Annie Wilkes into the fold.

Nickname: I never had one. My name is quite short so maybe that’s why?

Zodiac: Leo

Height: between 155 and 160 cm

Favourite musicians: I’m too old to fangirl over singers or bands. I mostly listen to whatever’s on the radio or on my ipod playlists. I used to love rock, metal or punk but I’ve never been a part of any subculture. However, I do have a soft spot for Linking Park, Korn, Metallica, Slipknot, etc. I also love listening to classical music, good soundtracks from movies, tv shows, games and even Bollywood, and wrestling themes. And I could listen to anyone with a good English accent forever. Oh, and Lana del Ray.

If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or visit the future? Being born in the wrong era is the story of my life. I’d go back in time to see all of my favourite historical figures and then I could die happily.

Do I get asks? I used to. Now, I’m scarcely even here.

Amount of sleep: Never enough.

What I’m wearing: Everything black. Although, I’m not an emo or a goth. I just like black a lot. And I’ve got lots of black clothes left from the two mourning periods that have happened during the last couple of years. Honestly, everything in my wardrobe is either black or all kinds of blue with rare green/purple/grey colour accents.

Dream job: I don’t have one and that’s why I’m never satisfied with what I do.

Dream trip: A tour around European castles, palaces, and royal gardens.

If you were an animal. What would you be? A dog, a horse or a bird. Preferably a bird cause it’s free and independent. A raven, maybe?

What are some of your favourite books/films/shows/games/etc.?

Books: I’m a bookworm. I love to read. Actually, I mostly read biographies of my favourite historical people. Aside from that, I read historical fiction, fantasy, horrors, and thrillers. I adore Agatha Christie and American gothic, so authors like E. A. Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne. But I also love good old Shakespeare and his tragedies as well as modern drama, Chekhov, etc. And fanfiction. Who doesn’t read it? My favourite book is Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Honourable mentions go to: Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky; A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin, A Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind and Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.

“Ssshh koi hai….”remember the chills which used to run down our spines when as kids we used to sit down in front of television screens at 11:00pm to watch these shows which now might seem more funny than scary, but you will have to agree that watching horror shows and movies have been one our guilty pleasures even though it does not let us sleep at night but we still love it, it is like going back to your toxic exes, it is dreadful but you cannot resist.

What we all can agree upon is that most of the information we have today about Ghosts, Spirits, Witches comes from their representation in popular culture which basically is through movies ,theater shows and folklore. The horror genre has been there in the movies for quite some time now, with the world’s first horror movie “THE HAUNTED CASTLE” made in 1896 and first Bollywood horror movie “MAHAL” made in 1946 which surely was long back and from then horror movies have been gaining popularity.

Our mothers have always been warning us to avoid watching horror movies since they were the ones who had to calm us down when we could not sleep at night after watching horror movies and our cries of “ mummy darr lag raha hai” met with “aur dekh bhoot aur chudailon wali picturein”, but did it stop us? Yavarum Nalam titled 13B in Hindi is a 2009 bilingual (Tamil-Hindi) psychological horror film written and directed by Vikram Kumar, starring Madhavan and Neetu Chandra in the lead roles. The film revolves around a mysterious TV show that mirrors and reveals what will happen in the protagonist's family's life that day. Everything is great--lighting, sound, etc. The plot is fascinating and the unraveling of the story behind the TV serial's characters is eye-popping! The violent flashbacks and disturbed characters leaves the viewers horrified! Madhavan, as always, has given a sincere and outstanding performance! You feel terrified with him. 13B is a fine example of intellectual horror. It does not force feed the suspense, but allows the viewer to build their own overtime as the protagonist becomes aware of the unnatural forces manipulating his and his family's mentality to the breaking point

2.Woh Kaun Thi(1964)

Woh Kaun Thi? is a 1964 black-and-white psychological mystery film directed by Raj Khosla, starring Sadhana Shivdasani, Manoj Kumar and Prem Chopra. The film was a hit at the box office. Woh Kaun Thi was one of the most scariest Hindi film of that time. The script is tense, interesting and twisted, at times so much that there isn't a possible solution one would offer. The writers try to lead the audience to one particular prediction, but the movie is still highly unpredictable. The movie is aided by some melodious songs composed by Madan Mohan and sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The song shayad ‘lag jaa gale phir ye haseen raat ho na ho’ is about 50 years now and has been and would always be an all time favorite forever, for all years to come. Splendid performances by Manoj & Sadhana and certainly haunting tale from Raj Khosla.

3.Mahal(1949)

Mahal is a film directed by Kamal Amrohi and starring Ashok Kumar and Madhubala. It was India's first reincarnation thriller film. The film was included in the British Film Institute's list, "10 great romantic horror films". The movie was a groundbreaking supernatural suspense thriller and one of the earliest known films dealing with reincarnation. Mahal became one of the biggest box office hits of 1949 in India and paved way for Indian gothic fiction.

Pizza is a 2012 Indian Tamil thriller film written and directed by debutant Karthik Subbaraj. Pizza tells you a story of a pizza-delivery guy who gets entangled in a story of horror, love and deception. The first part is a juxtaposition of initiation, life and horror. While the second half is where it gets horrid, severe and mind-blowing. The performances of the main leads was great and well maintained too. Special effects were at peaks along with the background score. The climax was great revealing all the twists and turns in the story.

This movie has raised the standard among all the horror movies which have been produced and released in India till now. It is something our film industry never produced before. The beauty and horror of this film will stalk you and will capture your mind. The story revolves around God Hastar and his greed for wealth. This is a period film which is based on pre and post-independence period. As the movie progresses the story becomes more gripping and fascinating. There are no big faces in this movie. The actors have done their job brilliantly. There are no big actors in this movie still it made stand out among other horror movies. The score of the music is composed by none other than Ajay-Atul. They have done their job brilliantly. The background music helps the story to move in right direction and make the plot for gripping. Visuals are astonishing, stunning and marvelous which helps the movie to go with the flow.

6.MAKDEE

This is an excellent movie not only for kids but also for elders. This movie runs around two about 10 years old identical twin girls and a myth in the village. One sister in simple and the other one is naughty. The myth is about a Churhel (Evil Soul) in the village. The naughty sister teases & make fun of the other one but when the other one falls in a serious trap, the naughty one plays with her own life to save the other. This is a fun filled movie. A pure and healthy fun and also gives a good message to kids in the end. The songs are lovable. Particularly kids will enjoy the movie. The acting of the girl artist is excellent. Shabana Ajmi is there in a different role. The direction of the movie is great. A must watch for sensible cinema viewers.

MIAMI — The N/uu language (also known as Nluu, Nǁng, Nǁŋǃke, or Nǀuu), once spoken in South Africa, is endangered — it was even declared extinct in 1973, after becoming mainly displaced by Afrikaans and Nama. N/uu is comprised of five vowel-like qualities, and its consonants are primarily clicks (the “|” or “/” indicates a click); the tongue hits the roof of the mouth with a thick, vibratory sound. Two native speakers recall N/uu’s former ubiquity in Susan Hiller’s latest work, “Lost and Found,” a 30-minute video featuring 23 endangered or extinct languages spoken by the people who know them best, now on view at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. The screen is mostly black, save for subtitles and a reverberating green oscilloscope that rises and falls with the voices’ tones and textures. “Everyone used to get together and speak the language,” says one speaker. “We laughed in N/uu.” Says another, “The language lives within me and I’m thankful for it.”

In the early 1960s, Hiller was working as an anthropologist, conducting field work in Central America, but ultimately decided that she did not want, as she once wrote, “‘her research to become part of anthropology’s ‘objectification of the contrariness of lived events.” She ultimately turned to art to conduct the same sort of research but, perhaps, with more nuance. As such, Hiller’s multimedia installations frequently examine human psychology, the effect of cultural phenomena on the collective unconscious, and the collective unconscious itself. She’s studied dreams, automatic writing, horror movies, and accounts of alien abductions.

There is a kind of paranormal magic in “Lost and Found,” too, given that many of the spoken languages are now totally extinct, rendering their very sounds ghostly — in fact, Doris McLemore, the last speaker of Wichita, died less than two months before the exhibition’s opening. In the Wichita chapter of the video, she states, rather prophetically: “I am the only person left who speaks Wichita. I’ll be gone and they can still hear my voice.” As Hiller explained over e-mail:

Sound waves actually touch our ears, so when we listen to a person talking we are literally touched by them…I wanted to facilitate direct contact, empathy, person-to-person feeling. In any case, there is always an unacknowledged uncanny aspect to sound recordings, which don’t distinguish between dead and living voices. Perhaps this reminds us that we will also become ghosts someday.

Hiller gathered these voices after, she explained, “looking extensively in archives, watching old ethnographic films, and searching online.” Speakers engage in conversations (in Berber/Tamazight), name colors and numbers (in Breton), sing their alphabets (in Salish, alongside a single, beating drum), and focus on the nature of language, lamenting the loss thereof. A speaker of Sauk explains: “God gave us the Sauk language…He didn’t give us English. The United States government tried to take our language. They took our children. They sent them to government schools.” Always, the green line wavers, creating a visual continuity that crosses continents and time — moving through the body, sound vibrations are consistent throughout the globe, our voices creating invisible oscilloscopes across oceans.

It is impossible to discuss language extinction without pointing to its causes, and it’s Hiller’s intention to foster enough empathy to make us curious about the impetus for language destruction. “I had become quite disturbed by the way the media pays attention when the last speaker of a language dies, without ever explaining how it came about that there would be so few speakers of a language left,” said Hiller. “Of course there is always either a history of deliberate suppression of the language by a dominant one, or a history of trauma to the speakers of a language through war or some other form of violence that explains the death of the language — but this is usually not mentioned.”

According to a study conducted at Mount Holyoke College for a World Politics course, minority languages are often “repressed as a first step towards repressing the actual minority.” Indeed, the more economically powerful a country is, the more rapidly its languages are lost, according to a 2014 study profiled in the BBC. The study’s lead author, Dr. Tatsuya Amano, found that “as economies develop, one language often comes to dominate a nation’s political and educational spheres.” As such, of the 6,000 or so languages spoken throughout the world, more than half the planet’s population speaks English, Russian, Mandarin, Hindi, and Spanish, explains MIT Technology Review, which calls this a “perilous state of affairs.” Along with the next hundred most popular languages, this accounts for nearly 95% of speakers — meaning just 5% of the globe speak the rest. In Hiller’s video, a speaker of Livonian, a dormant Finnish language — the last speaker died in 2013 — bemoans that with the loss of language comes the erasure of ancestral history. The old speakers of Livonian, she says, “have been great seamen, great captains, navigators, and helmsmen … The youth are not interested in old times; some do not even know that their grandparents spoke Livonian.”

And yet, all is not lost. Several of the showcased languages, such as Hawaiian and Cornish, are revived; Palawa Kani is constructed to resemble the extinct languages of Aboriginal Tasmanians. Alex Kwabena Colon, a speaker of Garifuna, says, “I work with children, trying to teach the significance of Garifuna so that they don’t forget our roots, so they can be proud of our ethnicity.” In light of the loss of the Sauk language, for example, actions like these feel healing. Most significant — and touching — is that the simplicity of each language, with or without an accompanying story, is pleasurable to hear: a weather report in Navajo, a song about language in both English and Kaurna. Says Hiller, “In an earlier language work of mine, The Last Silent Movie, there was a sense of tragic inevitability that these smaller languages would all disappear…However, in recent years, the internet has created a situation where the speakers of many small languages can easily communicate with one another.” Toward the end of “Lost and Found”’s Gifuna chapter, Colon states: “Everyone who comes here comes with a language of their parents and ancestors.” And there are ways, it seems, to protect them.
