Finally finished editing the photos from Anime Expo! Rambling under the cut:
I’m probably gonna cosplay my warboy for a long-ass time, but keep upgrading it each year! This go-round, I remade the arm scars so they’d pull up less when I moved. I also bought a pen of Telesis 8 adhesive to speed up application (instead of mixing small amounts of silicone for each piece), which worked out well! Much faster, and stays tacky so it held all weekend. The only issue was sweat, which didn’t affect it too much, but I think it did cause some slippage—so, I plan to pick up the Top Guard as well (which should block sweat).
I also got a new convertible jacket/vest, which I really like! (Its collar is hilariously “90s anime hero,” and the bottom half can be zipped off as well—so it can be a hyper-short vest, or a bolero if I leave the sleeves on. I adore it. SO MANY OPTIONS!) The tools on the vest are my beading pliers that I use to tighten the wires in my skeleton hand (with the plastic handles removed), and a screwdriver I found in the house that was missing its handle (and now has the pliers’ handles duct taped on it, after one of my haunt friends whittled down the end past the tiny “guard”). I found a toolbelt on ebay that came perfectly junky and dirty and already sized down for my tiny bird person waist, and all I gotta do is add a few more flaps/closures and I will be able to carry ALL THE THINGS in it. I’ll move the harder boxes I’ve been putting in my cargo pockets there, and softer things can go in my pocket so sitting isn’t so fussy. Also, I managed to find a pair of leather military boots from 1984 that actually fit my tiny-ass feet, which was practically a miracle. (They’re not wide, which would’ve been nice, but they’ve stretched out fairly well.)
I got a new thigh pouch at the Hornsmythe booth (seen in the first two images), so I’ll…probably switch them out, but part of me is tempted to just. Use both. >_> I don’t even know if I have enough shit to put in them both, but Spare is a packrat, and nothing says “packrat” more than “WHY THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE THAT MANY POUCHES.” :D I also got new kneepads! I adore them, too. The haunt friend I had whittle my screwdriver handle had been a slider in our room last season (of his own accord! his first time acting! the first slider ever in our haunt! I don’t think I could be more proud)…but since the room wasn’t set up for sliding (loose rocks instead of wood or concrete or ANYTHING ELSE, REALLY), he went through multiple sets of kneepads. He let me have one of the sets that held up okay, so they are also beautifully junky and dirty and I love them. :D The only issue is they’re prone to sliding down, so upgrade plans for next year include replacing the small pouch on my left knee with one that isn’t so resistant to wear (dang nylon), get another for the right, and sew them both on a bit higher.
INFORMATION I GLEANED FROM STARING AT FURY ROAD SCREENSHOTS: the reason some warboys (including Nux) have straps hanging all over the sides of their pants is that they utilize a strap and D-ring system to allow switching out pouches. They have many pairs of straps sewn down the sides of their pants, and then probably have a huge stash of pouches somewhere with D-rings attached at their four corners. This allows for swapping out pouches as they like, either for a given job or if a pair of pants is given to a new warboy—circumventing the need to sew and re-sew all the time. Super rad worldbuilding right there.
I didn’t run into anyone from Mad Max this year, unfortunately—but I was walking to meet up with my group after buying a fancy new screen tablet, and those two ridiculously-awesome looking steampunk guys stopped ME to say that I looked cool. (Obviously my response was to sputter and say “WHAT NO YOU GUYS LOOK AWESOME” and then we proceeded to talk for like ten minutes because they make all their stuff and had tips like “cut the top off old/cheap boots to use as a base for leather bracers!”)
ALSO! There were booths that were taking 3D turnaround images of folks, that you could then get as 3D-printed-sandstone, hand-painted statuettes, which was incredible! I think everyone could get the digital turnaround gif for free? But as I was wandering and checking it out, a lady at the 3D Snaps booth approached me to ask if I wanted to do it because she thought I looked really good, which was HUGELY FLATTERING? So I got a four-inch 3D print, because HELL YES (I’d budgeted for the more expensive tablet and had spare funds). I’m considering getting a bigger one next year/after more outfit upgrades and I’m fairly well satisfied with how it looks. Different pose, of course. Maybe kneeling or something. (Oooor if aforementioned haunt friend cosplays a Borderlands psycho when I do it, we can probably both fit in the allotted space, so like a small fight scene would be FUCKING RAD.) I took the figure with me to my haunt because we have about the right kind of dirt, and got some shots there. I forgot to have someone come take a shot of, like, my boots behind the figure for size comparison…but with how wonky the focus was being, it probably would’ve taken ages to get a shot with the figure clear instead of, like, the dirt or my boots. So I’m not too put out that I forgot. The shots I did manage to get are super rad, though! And you can see the patch I made for the back of the jacket, which I had forgotten to get a fullsize shot of.
All told, this last AX went pretty damn awesome, and I cannot wait to upgrade my warboy more and do it all over again. :D
