Don't answer if it's too intrusive, but I'm curious what they pay you for monitoring ?

No problem! I think it’s actually important for people to talk candidly about the money they make. It encourages people to demand what they are worth. Keeping quiet about money only benefits employers who want to pay us as little as they can get away with.

I currently make a little over $20/hr, which applies to all the work I do, rain or shine, monitoring or digging holes. In many cases (depending on the contract), I will be paid for a full eight-hour day, regardless of how many hours I actually spend in the field. Sometimes that means being on-call, and sometimes it means showing up in the morning and being told I’m not needed. The companies I work for try not to schedule us for any overtime, because it’s not usually in the budget.

I’m also (usually) compensated for travel time, expenses, and mileage (if I am driving my own vehicle), and if I have to be away from home overnight, I get per diem, which can be anything from around $40 to $70 per day (not including hotel, which the company generally arranges and pays for ahead of time), to cover my expenses.

I personally think $20/hour is too little for the work I do, especially considering it is work that requires a specific four year degree and training, and in some cases, a post graduate degree, as well. Besides that, my schedule only ever amounts to part time, meaning that I usually make $25k or less per year. What other job that requires a degree pays that little? I’m lucky to have no student loan debt, but I know lots of people who spent tens of thousands on their education, and are still struggling to pay it off. Even without any debt, I struggle to make ends meet and cover major expenses.

It was worse on the East Coast. CRM companies there were often predatory, hiring young archaeologists straight out of college, who didn’t know their value and were excited just to get their hands dirty. Those companies treated them like they were disposable, because there would always be a new crop next spring. The pay I got back east never topped $14/hr, and I’ve seen job listings offering as little as $10.50/hr. I knew a lot of people who became disillusioned and switched to other fields very quickly, which is sad. The work we do is important, and the people who have the qualifications to do it should be treated like valued professionals.
