My neighbor friends across the street had a relative that was a manager for a Dollar General. One day this relative brought the kids some hula hoops. I was 14 or so at the time (1987-ish )and this became the thing for us to try to do. It felt like it took me forever to learn to waist hoop but maybe it was 2 weeks? A month?

I ended up getting my own hula hoop at Toys R Us. I would waist hoop a lot over the next 3 years. I'd put a 12″ record on and try to make it through the entire side. I realized that if turned with the hoop, I could catch it if it started to drop.

In college I did not hula hoop at all. I didn’t pick hooping back up until sometime when I lived in MI. I think 2004 is when that was. I found a hula hoop at a store but it was a kid’s sized hoop. I remember when my guy and I were moving to GA, I left the hoop in the basement.

In my mid 30s around 2007 or 2008, I remembered there was a hoop dance movement going on. I got lost in some YouTube videos, discovered Hoopnotica DVDs and ordered the first one and also ordered an adult sized hoop. The Hoopnotica DVD is what taught me how to hip hoop, hula hoop by pushing front to back instead of side to side, and what taught me lasso / halo. My adult hoop was very heavy though. I’m not sure what kind of tubing it was. I tried a leg hooping tutorial with it and it HURT. I also started learning non dominant waist hooping with this hoop. On and off from that point until September 2016, I’d pick up that hoop to waist hoop. 

Around 2011 or 2012, I decided to re-tape this adult hoop. It was taped pink and I changed out the tape with black, red sparkly, and purple tape. I also decided to get a smaller, lighter hoop. I went down way too much though and got discouraged. 

In late September 2016, I went to the local paper’s event page and saw that there was a hoop flow class being offered at the yoga studio 5 minutes from my house. I took a chance and registered. That’s how I met Michelle, who I call HoopFriend. I learned she taught hoop fitness classes at the local rec centers and I started going to her classes. I mastered waist hooping on my non dominant side and learned chest and holder hooping and a lot of off body tricks.

Now I hoop every week. HoopFriend moved out of the city where I live but we meet up every couple of months to hoop together. I mainly learn stuff through video tutorials but have attended some workshops. I have a separate hooping Instagram so while I may not hoop every day, not a day goes by now where I don’t watch a hooping video. I also own a lot of hoops in all different weights and sizes. The definitely need a new storage solution!

How did you get into hooping?

My best friend growing up was 3 years younger than me. Not much of an age difference for adults, but huge when you’re kids.  Her dad was a manager of a Dollar General for a while and one day he brought home some hula hoops for his 4 girls. I think I was 14 at the time and she was 11. The 2nd oldest, who was 9, picked it up right away. The oldest, my then best friend, and I struggled. One day it clicked for her and finally for me. I ended up getting a silver hula hoop from Toys R Us, I think. It just became my go to thing to do at the time. All through high school I’d waist hoop on and off. I’d pick 12″ singles to play on the record player and would try to hoop for the duration of an extremely long song.

After high school, the hobby died down. I tried to pick up another hoop from a kids store when I was in MI, but it didn’t stick. I know now that it was probably to small for me since most kids hoops are not big enough for adults.  In 2008, I saw that hooping was getting popular and there was a whole new dimension of tricks and hoop dance. I ordered an adult sized hoop online and picked it back up again. I even ordered the first level Hoopnotica DVD which did help me learn how to hoop on my hips, some above the head stuff and how to hoop on my non dominant side.

At the time, there weren’t any hoop classes near me and with grad school and life in general just being busy, I dropped the hobby again. I did pick up my hoop off and on over the years. However, it wasn’t until last October when I saw a hoop dance flow class advertised at a place just minutes from my house, I had to try again. That’s where I met my hoop instructor friend.

I’ve really advanced so much just in the past 4 months with her. She has a large variety of hoops to try and that itself was a big help. I found my hoops were just too heavy for some of what I wanted to do. She’s also got a good class structure and is very encouraging. 

I’ve found that it’s become a meditative practice for me. Whenever I’m hooping, my mind is clear of anything else. It’s wonderful. I also find that I sleep better at night, now since I’ve picked it back up somewhat consistently

Hoop history

I grew up in a suburb of Greater Miami called Opa-Locka. It borders Carol City very closely. That was where I went to first grade and it was walking distance and I think it all might be Miami Gardens now.

My childhood best friend lived across the street from me. Her dad worked as a manager for a Dollar General for a bit. One day, he came home with 3 or 4 hula hoops for his daughters, of which there were 4. Their brother was maybe 2 and the girls were 12, 10, 8 and 5 or thereabouts. I was 14. The three youngest girls picked it up right away. My best friend and I had a more difficult time understanding waist hooping.

She picked it up before I did. What I think was going on now that I have more knowledge is that the hoops were probably too small. I’m maybe an inch taller than I was at 14 now as an adult. It feels like it took a month but maybe it took a couple of weeks? And when it did click, it was the thing to do. 

We’d compete to see who could keep it up the longest. Our arms would get tired because we didn’t know what to do with them. But it was fun. Addicting and fun.

I eventually got my own hoop from Toys R Us. I think it was pink. Much to my mother’s disapproval, I took to waist hooping in the living room. I collected 45s at the time, and the goal at first was to just keep the hoop spinning until the song was over. Then I switched to my 12″ remix singles. Eventually I graduated to album sides. And when we finally got a CD player, I could pick tracks I wanted to hoop to in order.

But I found I couldn’t stay still and waist hoop. I figured out I could move with it and catch it to prevent it from falling. At the time, I felt that was cheating. I didn’t realize that was a skill that would benefit me.

I hooped on and off throughout high school (’89-’92). I didn’t pick it up again until maybe 2008 when I realized there was a hoop dance thing going on. I forget how I stumbled across it. I remember being fascinated with the vortex and buying an adult sized hoop from BodyHoops.com (which has now merged with Canyon Hoops). I didn’t quite pick up on the YouTube tutorials I found. I didn’t realize that the hoop I got was really too heavy for me for off body moves, got frustrated and gave up on learning tricks at that time.

But I hooped on and off again. I brought my hoop to kickboxing once because I couldn’t do the 200 jumping jacks that were part of the warmup due to an injury. I eventually found Hoopnotica and picked up the level 1 DVD that taught me how to lasso, hip hoop, and waist hoop on my non dominant side.

I was still not really consistent with hooping until last year. In late September of 2016, I actually went to the events page of the Forsyth News, which is something I never do. That’s when I found that a flow class was being offered at a yoga studio near my house. That’s how I found Michelle who has been a fantastic hoop mama and an equally fantastic friend. 

And I can finally do a vortex now.

How I Got Into Hoop Dancing

I never knew that one day, randomly scrolling through YouTube searching for Paramore videos during the height of my embarrassing “emo” phase in middle school, that I would stumble upon something that would eventually evolve into my greatest passion.

I was simply looking for music to play idly in the background, but was taken aback when I saw a thumbnail of a woman in her early twenties woman hula hooping in a quite interesting outfit. Attached to her black tube top was a tail-like piece of fabric, and her leg warmers seemed like something out of the ’80s.

When I clicked, I heard the familiar opening guitar riff of Misery Business, one of my favorite teen angst anthems; I’ll admit, I wasn’t expecting much from this woman’s performance because it seemed like such an odd hobby.

However, when I saw her hoop twirling around her body in such a graceful way, I was immediately captivated. I swiped my purple bangs from my face so I could fully see — I was used to being partially blind from my sideswept bangs — and widened my racoon-lined eyes. My “emo” exterior did not correlate with the immense joy I felt from watching this woman’s beautiful performance.

I immediately scoured the internet to find more about this art of hoop dance and came upon a company called Hoopnotica, based in Los Angeles, which was only about 10 miles away! I begged my mom to take me there, and she begrudgingly agreed, confused as to why I wanted her to buy me a $42 hula hoop. She probably thought this was going to be just another phase, as I had gone through so many before.

I became obsessed with hoop dancing, watching hundreds of tutorials on YouTube and eventually teaching myself almost every trick in the book. I dyed my hair back to its natural brown color. I guess the emo look was a phase, but the hoop dancing certainly wasn’t.

I eventually met Jackie Hesley through Hoopnotica, the company that I originally bought my first hoop from, and we decided to start our own company together called Hoop Trainer.

I began teaching hoop dance classes through Hoop Trainer on a weekly basis in 2011. We met up every Saturday at Glen Alla Park in Marina Del Rey, and I had a regular attendance of 20 students.

This all changed, however, when I was accepted to University of California, Berkeley. I didn’t even bring a hoop up here, as I moved all my belongings up in a suitcase. I let my stress-inducing academic schedule get the best of me, and I completely stopped hooping.

I want to get back in to my passion, and my blog will journey my path back into the hoop community. I can’t wait to rediscover my greatest love — the hula hoop.
