now that I've read a fair bit of dmbj (in a weird order), I think some of the creepiest bits from what i've read so far are actually in the two heihua stories (flowery night and a thousand faces)?

maybe because they're short stories and whatever creepy things and horror elements are in the main story/sequel books get spaced between other things that lower their impact

anyway shortlist of top creepy things in dmbj from memory (I have not read books 1-5 yet):
