Say what you will, but I think this demonstrates an excellent distinction between Itachi and Nagato in particular, despite them both ultimately having similar aspirations: Itachi is consistently aware that he’s lying to himself. He knows he’s slightly delusional. He chooses not to care, because he’s going to die, and always was, so it doesn’t matter as much. But in a world where, for whatever reason, Itachi was going to live…I think that’d be a pretty useful thing to take into consideration.
