The makeup powder left a thin layer over the vanity table, a spray of dust that floated in the light, a brief glimmer before settling again. The yellowy bulbs were dazzlingly bright, all the better to see in the dark dressing rooms, a mostly quiet space where soft music would twinkle as delicately on the air as the spray of powder, the hum and groan of the city's steel an ocassional bass accompaniment beneath the common sounds of life in Rapture. Those noises could spook her sometimes at the right moments, in the quiet all alone, a huge, thrumming structure all around her with the weight of the sea pressing down.

She sat a moment pensively while a practiced hand brushed the color onto her cheeks, absent yet precise due to the sheer number of times she had repeated the process. The face she knew each time she sat before the mirror, drawing lines, adding shades of blue, pink, green, red, filling in and shading and at the end of the day wiping it all away to be looking at herself again. Both her and also not, that is how it had started to feel. The thrill of it long since ebbed, leaving behind a restless, dissatisfied ache. It wasn't just the repetitive cycle of the same dance, the same faces, the emptiness that plagued her every time she stepped out onto that stage. Something else, much more pressing, always was on her mind or just at the fringes, keeping her awake at night, thinking, searching, yearning for answers. It felt like a string that was always being tugged, begging her to move, act, seek and find.

A voice cut through the fog of thoughts she found herself now lost in, something quite common of her lately. It was a voice that immediately brought a small smile, warm and authentic, in greeting to the young man that sat himself beside her at the table. A shred of hope, her slim chance of aspiration, the light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. She couldn't help but smile and feel some touch of hopeful happiness, just knowing she wasn't all alone in this. And the need to return the favor, to ease the burden of what she also felt, drove her to push through.

She glanced at the bag, trying to revive herself from the silent haze of reflection she had been absorbed by. A slow blink, and the makeup brush was returned to its place on the vanity. "No, I hadn't yet. That's so nice of you. What kind did you bring?"

Eve’s garden was empty before noon. That’s what Jack had been told the first time he was brought here; no one wanted to spend their mornings at the strip club, so the business was left in peace until the evening. That's when patrons rolled in from work, looking to let off steam.

Jack liked it here, at least before the shows started up. It was quiet.

The back door clicked shut as Jack entered, a paper bag tucked under his arm, and kept his head down as he trailed behind the stage. None of the staff ever paid him mind, but Jack always avoided making eye contact. He felt like people could see right through him.

In the back, performers were getting ready. Stretching, rehearsing, and putting on makeup to prepare for when the club opened. Jack scanned across the dancers and found who he was looking for, sitting on a stool in the corner, the lightbulbs electrifying her hair.

Jack pulled up his own stool to sit next to Jasmine Jolene. The first person he’d met outside the labs. The only person in his life who had been kind to him, and for that, Jack was grateful. He was set on helping her find the answers she wanted.

She was looking for her baby, and he was looking for his parents. Really, they were a perfect match.

Jack held up the paper bag he’d brought with him. “Brought sandwiches. Don’t know if you ate already.” He didn’t even know if she liked sandwiches, but when Jack was worried he found it felt a bit better if there was food on hand.

And worst case scenario, Jack would have both sandwiches.

In real life, probably the time I was at a laundromat in Italy and this guy wandered in with a beer, sat next to me and my male roommate, assumed we were a couple, and proceeded to give us bizarre life advice. I wish I could remember more of it, but it was so odd.

Given the chance, would you ever go into space? I’ve answered this exact question on a recent survey...but yeah absolutely, as long as it was a free opportunity. Outer space has always interested me so it would be awesome to actually get there. What is your all-time favorite thing to snack on? A local brand of chips called Nova, corndogs, powdered fries, and pizza. I couldn’t choose just one :( Have you ever been jealous of anyone's socks? Not in a toxic way but I have seen socks that made me go “damn, I wish I had that” and it’s usually socks based off of famous paintings like Starry Night, The Scream, etc. Do you match your clothing, or are you careless about fashion? The most I’ll match is colors; I’ll make sure the colors I wear complement each other. But I’m not likely to buy outfits that come in parts, like a matching top and skirt that have their own price tags. It’s an annoying scam that makes you have to pay more money for one outfit lol. Know anyone that has amazing fashion taste? There’s a professor in the communication research department of our college that dresses SOOOO well. She’s never recycled an item of clothing either. She dresses literally exactly like Audrey Hepburn, except with more printed clothes.
