Alright, so. I finally rewatched Megamind after meaning to for like two weeks or so, basically ever since the sequel movie came out. And for several reasons, nooot a fan of how the sequel was handled honestly. So, I thought with the original movie fresh in my mind, I could try to brainstorm a couple things I might have done with a sequel.

To start with, the Doom Syndicate. The original movie makes no reference to Megamind knowing any other villains, let alone ever working with them in the past. So, if they were to be included I feel it should be more in a "Oh I've heard of them, they're from that one town a couple states over" way. Acquaintances at best.

But then again, the original movie also seems to imply that if there are any other superheroes or villains, they're pretty dang rare. This isn't The Incredibles where some people are just born with super powers. I mean, no one from out of town came to try and stop Megamind after he "killed" Metro Man. With Titan/Tighten it all happened within a day so less time for outsiders to react, but Megamind had control of the city for a good while there.

So, if we want to keep the Doom Syndicate... it would need to be handled differently. Also get rid of that brain "Mentor" character. I don't really have any ideas for how, except...

Perhaps they're originally fictional in-universe, from a Saturday morning cartoon or a video game or something. One way or another, they're made real and now Megamind has to stop them and probably make them fictional again. Could also be achieved with a different set of villains.

Another way to do a new villain could be Dimensional travel. Say there's some sort of a Bizarro universe, where Metro Man was evil and Megamind was good to start with. Or both were evil and teamed up to do evil. In any case, Alternate Universe Evil Metro Man gets transported to the main universe, causes mayhem. Might even force the Metro Man we know out of retirement temporarily, or not. If he does show up in public, would probably make an excuse of how he's also from some other universe specifically summoned to help out, thus explaining why he's gone again afterwards. Dude just wants to make music.

To add, the dimensional traveling villain doesn't even need to be a version of Metro Man, they could also be anyone else. Some other alien, a dude who fell into acid and got powers from it, idk man.

Hear me out, an Evil Spider-Man of sorts. That is, someone who starts out as a normal human being, perhaps an outcast, and by some twist of fate receives powers, which they proceed to use for evil. Might be re-treading Hal's deal a little but idk what I'm doing anymore.

Evil Bruce Wayne? A rich guy with weird gadgets and the skill to use them, for evil. Would probably be harder to pull off since Megamind's whole deal is how smart he is.

A Mad Scientist type. Megamind is an Evil Scientist, but not a "mad" one, he just builds a death ray powered by the sun because he's that smart. Put him against someone whose ideas make no sense to him but somehow still work.

Misguided hero? Not really a villain but would be an antagonist for the story, someone who's convinced that Megamind's redemption is all an act maybe? Would probably need powers of some sort to be an actual threat.

Alright then, let's move onto something else for a change: MegaRox. My shipper heart needs them either clearly together or clearly working on that. But the original movie does seem to imply they're already together by the time the new museum has opened. I mean, the way she jumped into his arms and then kissed him? Sure it was on the cheek but that wasn't a platonic thing. It's about the context!

No further notes on that, so I present to you... Prequel!

Takes place before Metro Man fakes his death so he can retire, and therefore Megamind is still Evil.

MegaRox wouldn't be an established relationship but did y'all see them at the start of the original? That was practically flirting anyway and that dynamic should be present.

Maybe it could even be early into his villain career? Show how he really got started as a Super Villain, the first kidnappings of Rocanne Ritchi, gaining notoriety, and how Roxanne learned that she's honestly in more danger of getting hit by stray debris from Metro Man's dramatic entrances than from anything Megamind aims at her.

I doubt I'll ever develop any of these ideas into a coherent story but if anyone wants to yoink a thought, go wild. I'm also down for discussing any of these.

A Coronatine Meme! Thanks for the tag, @batmansymbol--you have successfully rekindled my burning desire to get my hands on a copy of MEGAMIND, because I’m still bummed I haven’t seen it XD

Are you staying home from work/school? Yep! Someone at the fire station where my roommate works tested positive earlier this month, so she and I were on self-quarantine for a couple weeks, and then the Stay At Home order hit Ohio, so At Home I Stay. It’s not that much different from the work-at-home-writing thing I’ve been doing since November, honestly.

If you’re staying home, who is with you? My roommate! But she’s a firefighter/paramedic, so she’s essential. That means 24 hours alone, 48 hours of Possible Roommate Sighting, rinse and repeat.

Who would be your ideal quarantine mate? Oh, gosh. Hm. I’ve got a handful of friends who I’m like Dang It I Wished I Was Trapped With You. Alternatively: I would like to befriend the family of crows who’ve been making their presence known in my neighborhood.

Are you a homebody? Haha yep. Again: This hasn’t been super different for me, but now I get worried about taking my socially distant strolls to the park because there are still too many children around, and they’re not as conscientious about keeping their distance as Adults. All that’s changed, really, is I don’t write at Panera once a week.

An event you were looking forward to that got canceled? I had a bubble tea date and a lunch date with ex-coworkers planned, which I’m kind of sad we had to postpone, and I feel bad that I had to cancel my second birds weekend in March, but that was when we were still self-isolating and I didn’t want to get the rest of the RAPTOR squad sick. Nothing major, and all easily re-schedulable.

What movies have you watched recently? Wow, I’m really bad at watching things. I did rewatch Suicide Squad not too long ago, because my roommate and I were going to see Birds of Prey and she hadn’t seen it. But then . . . this happened. I’d still like to see BoP, and also the desire to rewatch Ice Age, of all things, hit me like a glacier: gradual but inevitable.

What shows are you watching? Seriously: I’m so bad at watching things. Just finished The Witcher, though, because it came highly recommended and I could watch it with a buddy! That was lots of fun--especially the Buddy Watch part. I haven’t committed to the next one, and I’m likely to waffle around the idea of “maybe I should watch a show!” for the entirety of the month, until the month is up and it’s Writing Time again, and then that’ll be my excuse for not XD

What music are you listening to? I’ve been on a Pandora kick, for my Panic! At the Disco station, which means I Don’t Know What I Want And Need Something New lol. Hozier or Bastille when I have my iPod instead of my phone. Doom Days feels like a great album right now.

What are you reading? THIS IS MY JAM. I’ve been working through Joan He’s Descendant of the Crane, and I’m enjoying it! It was slow going while I was proofreading my book, but now that I’m sending that to agents and technically Between Big Writing Projects ‘til May, I’m hoping for much reading time. Next on deck is How Long ‘Til Black Future Month? by NK Jemisin, and I bought myself Many Reward Books for writing milestones. The Gutter Prayer is eyeballing me, and I’m expecting two (TWO!!) deliveries within the next week or so!! Super pumped.

What are you doing for self-care? I’ve still been walking at least a mile a day (which was my goal at the beginning of the year), Consciously Socially Distant, and it’s been so nice out. Sticking to my writing battle plan helped me, too, because it’s absorbing, so I’m hoping to write some Fluff and some Suffering as catharsis--I’ve got a handful of ideas for both, and it’s fun to write just for me. I’ve also been journaling for the first time in years, to have a record. Longer phone calls and Skype calls with friends and family, too. I’m hoping to sink into Many Books, and make some knitting progress! It’s weird because April was supposed to be my writing break month anyway, and I always use those as recovery times. I’ll just have to remind myself to be gentler than usual, and make sure I get enough sunlight, and limit how many times I check the news. And also sleep, I suppose.

so fucking many, my dude. the amount of movies i wrote essays about when i had watched maybe three scenes and read the synopsis is insane. after getting a degree in it, and with how burned out i got, i found it very hard to give a shit about classics that lecturers told me were important. the big one is the godfather; it’ll be a cold day in hell when i finally watch that one.

hey, i couldn't find it in your search (delete this if you've already done it) but what do you think about Rey's isolation in The Force Awakens? would you say her characterisation in the film(s) follow symptoms of being alone well?

I’m honestly not convinced there’s anything in the movie to suggest shemeets the conditions of solitary confinement. The definition is an hour or lessof daily contact with other people. In the context of a sci fi like Star Wars I’mtaking that to be ‘other sentients’ not just ‘other humans’.

 She lives alone. Many of the people around her are threatening and shedoesn’t like her boss. On the other hand she does seem to know everyone aroundher by name and her dialogue suggests she also knows their temperaments.

 She could meet the conditionsof solitary confinement but I honestly don’t think we see enough of her usualroutine to tell for sure.

 The movie is on my list to review and it honestly hadn’t occurred to meto consider Rey as…isolated to the point where she’d have symptoms.

 So far as I can tell there’s nothing in the movies to say whether shehad much social interaction on Jakku or not.

 I read her as not meeting theconditions of solitary confinement. Independent rather than isolated and Ithink that interpretation came primarily from the fact that she doesn’t really seem to have any symptomsof prolonged isolation.

 It’s perfectly possible to read things the other way as you did. Becausethe one day of her routine we see doesn’t involve much interaction with othersand could be extrapolated to mean she’sseverely isolated.

 But the canon doesn’t actually say that. It doesn’t say she’s isolatedand it doesn’t say she isn’t either.

 When I discuss fictional portrayals of torture or abuse I try to stickto things the work indisputably shows or states happened.

 Thinking of the movies, books and shows I’ve reviewed so far- well allof them either state or show torture. A few don’t explicitly describe what they’reshowing as torture but it indisputably is (ie threatening to burn someone todeath, threatening to kill a suspect unless he revealed information etc). Star Wars Episode IV states rather thanshows that Leia was tortured, CaptainAmerica The Winter Soldier doesn’t stated Bucky is tortured but it’s prettyclear from the visual story telling that’s what they’re going for.

 There are a few things on my list that don’t seem to realise what they’reshowing (or implying) is torture. For instance Megamind gives us a glimpse of the cell the main character hasapparently spent most of his life in. It’s a solitary room with a single chairand he apparently spends most of his time in captivity strapped to it. That’ssolitary confinement and either a restraint torture or a stress position (I’dneed to rewatch the movie and get a better look at the chair to be sure).

 But when the canon is a little more nebulous, I try to be wary. Becauseif the text can be read multiple ways then the narrative isn’t necessarily talking about torture, abuse or isolation in thisincidence.

 Essentially I’d rather keep the discussion in a realm where I don’t haveto argue what happened on screen (or on the page) was torture. I want torture,and how we handle it narratively, to be the focus of the discussion. I don’twant to be derailed by discussions of what is or isn’t canon.

 If the movies return to this point and make it explicit that Rey’sisolated then I’ll definitely talk about that in the future. Until then I thinkthis particular example is too open to debate.

Please don’t make me think about embarrassing things. I can’t think of what is the MOST embarrassing thing I’ve ever done over my whole life because I probably blocked those memories out but in more recent times (like a few months ago or something) I went to Dunkin Donuts and I wanted chocolate frosted donuts but they had none and so I panicked and I just stood there saying “Um… um… um” out loud to this poor cashier dude who was offering suggestions that I kept turning down until I decided to just get a plain glazed donut. When telling this story to my friends I told them that I basically broke lol. It was pretty embarrassing though and the Dunkin Donuts I went to was in the mall and sometimes when I walk past I see the cashier guy and I’m like I can never go in there at least not when that dude is working lol

I’ve never really had it so I can’t really say. I can say that based on my pickiness when it comes to eating I probably wouldn’t enjoy it much but idk

Not to be too gay (even though that’s my mood all the time) but I wish I was with my girlfriend which is where I always want to be tbh

I do! It was weird I didn’t need glasses for the first 19 years of my life and then suddenly I did. I like them though, I think they make me look better (also they help me see lol)
