And to answer your question:

1.) the fandom is pretty active on twitter. Not so much in the past 1-2 months but while the show was airing, fanworks were rampant if you knew where to look. Also, we hosted a Thornute week for the first time since 2019 and the event was so popular that even Yukimura retweeted several artworks!

We also had an NSFW thornute weeked, I participated in that one to. It’s under the hashtag #NuteFinnWeekend on twitter. Aaaand, last but not least, we had #girlthornuteparty in october as well, with genderbent thornute artworks!

2.) I’m very picky about the fanfics I read, so I don’t have many recs. You’ve probably already read it, but I highly recommend “Neither Sword, nor Crown” by @arahir and “All the King’s Men: The Englishman” by @ dishrag and @nidsk, although the latter is unfortunately unfinished.

3.) I have a lot of fanart I like, I retweet a lot of thornute stuff on twitter, and I usually retweet my favourites again and again from time to time. Here’s a thread of some amazing thornute artworks, but there’s so much more than this. HMU if you want me to show you some more stuff ❤️

4.) As for the topic of the doujin, I’ve been meaning to draw one for the longest time, but I don’t trust my skills enough to do it, haha. But I’m writing a very much nsfw modern au fanfic!

5.) And I’ve been meaning to set up an inprnt for a while now, but my application always gets refused, so there’s that. When I finally set up a shop, I will surely post it on social media!

I like to ask myself some questions about what I've written in the past year. Here's my thoughts.

Stories published: 13

Fandoms published: 3 (technically if you look at my AO3 tagged fandoms for the year it’s 8, but I’m just going to group all the DCU together).

It’s ended up being my biggest year in terms of story output; being back in a fandom which is causing me brainrot as far as prompts go and where I have a bunch of mutuals has definitely been helpful for the writing. My longest finished fic ever is now 24,306 words, and I’ve cleared 40k this year. 

In terms of my all time stats: I’ve got three new stories in my top ten as far as kudos go (at 5,7 and 9 as I write this): all the Vorkosigan has dropped below 10th now.

Most popular story: there’s an endless road to rediscover. Given how I wrote this then fussed worrying for several months over what its reception would be, I’m glad it went well, especially as it was my first time tackling Damian characterisation and I wasn’t confident with him yet. It’s doing better than I expected, ranked next to everything else. 

Favourite story written: Um. Hmmm. Part of me wants to say Orange Juice, because I just really enjoyed how fast that one came together, but really it’s the picture frames have changed and so has your name, no question. My most ambitious project, the source of so much brainrot and theorising. The day I figured out how the solution to ‘what happened to Dick’ (because that was the last big moving piece that came together to make the story work - the solution) was a wonderful one, because I kicked my feet with delight and then had to work really really hard not to reveal the secret to everyone I immediately wanted to tell how clever I was. I was SO SMUG.

Best reception: the picture frames have changed and so has your name definitely gets the award here. Everyone was super nice about it, I got to see so much theorising, it’s currently sitting on 116 comment threads, and honestly all the support to push through and get it written was worth it. Came out so good! You were all really generous!

Favourite underrated story: Tea for Two. I just like the balance of how much stuff I layered into it and that it was detailed enough I sent someone who I KNOW is hugely into No Man’s Land scurrying off to the comics to check I had got certain details correct. It was a fun write with very specific goals to hit, and stylistically exactly what I like doing. I also love the concept of the Mother’s Day series and am thinking through what additions I want to make to it in 2024. 

Favourite title: I actually really enjoyed some of my title choices this year, but I absolutely cannot go past I’ll hold your memory in my hands tonight in terms of title. I came up with it, then I giggled, then I thought about how dark the joke was, then I giggled again. Helena held the thank you letter from Tim! Barbara held the plushie of Tim! Dick held Tim’s brain! I’m so awful.

Hardest story to name: bones of a dinosaur, bones of a city I honestly did not know what to call this story, so I ended up essentially opting out of naming it. I think it works, and has joined the storied realms of ‘story titles I’ve invented quotes for’.

Themes I noted in my stories this year: ‘Let’s write about mothers and sisters’ popped out a lot. There’s a lot of death (and discussions of deaths), which unfortunately ties back into the mothers and sisters thing. And a lot of Tim and his relationships with his older siblings: Dick, Barbara, Helena and Cass.

Commentary: well look who fell back into DC fandom and wrote fic. The bunnies attacked and the fandom itself enjoys short stories. On top of that I had, hmm, two ‘sort out the draft I have sitting here and publish it’ stories that went out this year. Becoming Miss Burgeson had been hanging around as an idea more than a story since I finished Invisible Sun in 2021, because not only is Rita Douglas a fascinating character, but also there are SO MANY identity shenanigans over the years in the Burgeson family. Erasmus’ comments on being a Burgeson in particular were the heart of the fic (because everyone forgets Erasmus ALSO is an assumed name). Nobody using the name was born into it and everyone chose to adopt it as a cover. Now Rita’s not nearly the most complex figure here (Miriam’s name situation is even wilder), but due to the complexities of Miriam/Helge’s names, Rita acquired three extra surnames by the transitive nature of being Miriam’s natural daughter. Actually I SHOULD sit down and work out what Rita’s braid name should actually be. I also dusted off Just Skate Figures enough to post the main bits of it, because I was tired of not having the Axel and Minami scene, at least, posted where other people could enjoy it.

What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

Honestly, any of my stories to do with Heather this year. I wrote about her quite a lot and really got to explore her trauma and characterization. I love her so much, and those fics really stand out to me.

What work of yours has the most hits?

An Heir and a Throne with 8,976 hits. I don’t know if I’d count it though, because I didn’t start it this year. 

If we’re going with stories I wrote this year, that would be Reliant with 2,224 hits.

What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?

“I Don’t Know What You Mean”. It was a one-shot at first that I started last year for a whump event. Then I added more chapters, and I was stunned by how many people liked it.

I have so many to comb through that it would be hard to say. I wrote Lovers’ Eve in a one hour sitting, but there are shorter fics that definitely took less time.

As far as one-shots go, I remember Power Sick taking me a while. It’s 6,547 words.

Aziraphale. Writing from his perspective is kind of difficult. I find Crowley much easier to write. His dialogue flows better for me.

What’s one pairing you want to explore next year?

Get the pitchforks, but probably more Dagur/Heather. They’re a fucked up pair and I want more of it.

Biggest surprise while writing this year?

I’m starting to get the hang of m/f and f/f couples!!! This is huge for me, because as an AFAB nonbinary trans guy with debilitating endometriosis, I can have a lot of trouble writing those types of pairings. I associate those body parts with pain, not pleasure, but I’m learning. I’m figuring out how to take my association out and just write the characters, or write the characters in new ways where I can still work around my pain. It's been so cool and incredible to me, as well as therapeutic. Writing is great, you guys.

182 Days of TPN - Day 75

Chapter 75: “Unyielding Reed”

EVERYONE SHUT UP, the best Emma is here! AAHH, words can’t describe how much I love her in this outfit. Hell, I have a separate tag dedicated to it. And all the lovely artists who create such beautiful fanart of GP Emma have my enteral gratitude, especially since the second season denied us of ALL THIS.

I love how impressed Sandy & Zack are of her shooting skills. It’s honestly kinda scary how good she already is despite only becoming familiar with guns a few days prior when she first left the shelter. (I know the target only shows one hit, but since there’s three “bangs” in the previous panel, can I assume she fired three shots and just hit the bullseye on each one? because that would be amazing.)

I actually really like Sonya in that darker jacket she has in the flashback. And I’m only realizing now that it’s Paula & Pepe who are the ones dodging Nous & Nouma’s attacks.. aahh what brave souls, getting that close to the enemy just to gather information. Another reason to love them.

Mmmm okay okay, for the longest time I was kinda salty (like the tiniest bit you can imagine) that Yuugo ends up firing that final shot against Leuvis because I thought it would’ve been so badass if that was Emma’s kill instead, but I’m reminded now that it was solely Leuvis (and not any of the other poachers like I mistakenly thought of) who was responsible for killing off Yuugo’s entire family, so yeah.. perfect case of revenge for our bunker dad. I’m more okay with it now.

Pfftt, I’m glad everyone can agree this demon is insane.

Killing off a whole family just so he could feel that hatred of the lone survivor.. this psycho resembles Itachi. No wonder I like him so much. (see! having Crispin voicing him would’ve been PERFECT). But yes honey, Leuvis is definitely trying to pull the same trick on you. At least he’s nice enough to give Palvus head scratches.

The whole “staying strangers” bit of this reminds me very much of Isabella & Yuugo and how they handled dealing with the children. With death being a common occurrence in this world, it’s ideal to stay detached from everyone, saving yourself from becoming emotionally invested so if/when the time comes where someone does die, their death wouldn’t break you emotionally as well.

“Tomorrow” huh? That’s wishful thinking.

The poachers must’ve heard Emma being so ambitious about a possible hunt tomorrow and said nah, how about today! RIGHT NOW!

Self-imposed rule aside about not rambling on about extra pages because I MUST chat about this one! It is just so damn PRECIOUS how the girls take care of her and set her up with THE OUTFIT. And OF COURSE we got Sandy being a total sweetheart and gifting her the hair clips to help hide her missing ear. I really wish they all had more scenes with Emma throughout the story.. they’re just so adorable and it gives me many warm and fuzzy feelings about how quick they accepted her into their little GP family.

But it’s actually a great thing, because I remember that when I was younger (in my teens), I often felt discouraged when people didn’t read my fanfics. So I focused on fanfics and fandoms that were more popular, but often didn’t finish the fics because it’s obviously not as much fun as writing about the things you really want to.

Now, I wrote almost 80k words for a series about Anthony/Siena that only a few people read, but it’s been my number one favorite work this year, and the one that I felt was the most successful personally. It just started out as a oneshot idea and turned into a 3 part series which I had an absolute blast writing.

So, at the end of this, special shoutout to my series Illicit Affairs – writing this meant a lot to me and this story will forever be dear to my heart <3

Fic Stats Game

First most hits: The Last Time

After settling into his new anonymous life, Peter picks up a new coffee habit. But is it really just for the sake of routine, or is it an excuse to see his old friends? Peter resolves that today is the last time, and then he will truly cut ties with his past. After all, that's what he wanted, wasn't it?

You may not know this about me, but Spider-Man is my oldest and deepest obsession. I didn't like how No Way Home ended. I didn’t want to rewrite canon or anything, but I did want to explore how Peter (especially MCU Peter) would do a terrible job at staying away from his friends. Most likely this fic only has such a high hit count because the fandom is massive.

I wrote the first chapter of this fic as a oneshot, but it’s become a multi-chapter slow burn identity reveal fic now and I am atrocious at updating with any semblance of a reliable schedule. I’m trying to get a lot of it outlined and several chapters written before I start posting again.

Second most kudos: Glockwork

Sometimes, the answer is violence. In which Clockwork rescues Danny from the Guys in White in a more conventional manner.

Joining fandom events (especially for Danny Phantom) has resulted in several one-off crack fic ideas. This is one of them. My second-longest obsession after the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films has got to be Danny Phantom. I somehow managed to avoid phandom participation for nearly 20 years. And honestly, y’all are insane, but in a good way I think.

Glockwork isn’t even my joke. I just couldn’t think of a better pun than the meme this was based on. I am glad to have contributed any small part to fandom lore. Also, Clockwork with a gun is hilarious. The original art that inspired this fic was drawn by @ravenatural-art

Third most bookmarks: Waypoints

When an unnatural cold settles over Casper High, the trio know that something more than they can see must be going on. But their search for answers yields more than they bargained for. Ghosts are haunting Amity Park with their shattered memories. Only by reliving those memories can they free the mortal realm from ghostly influence, restore the broken cores, and ultimately, help the ghosts pass on. Yet there is a sinister force at work behind the scenes. Someone…or something…caused this. Who is pulling the strings? Why? And how do they make sure none of this happens again?

Another Danny Phantom fic! This is the piece I’m writing for Invisovang (yes, writing, as in present tense—I didn’t finish by the deadline it’s fine). My longest fic by far, it’s amazing what actually planning out your story will do for you.

Probably has so many bookmarks since I'm still actively updating it, and many people prefer to read completed longfics. Also, there are just so many Danny Phantom fics out there. If you want a fic that doesn't involve dissection, maybe this one's for you.

Fourth most comments: Geduldh’s Fate

In which Heisshitze learns of the consequences of his meddling in Ferdinand's affairs. SPOILERS FOR PART 4 VOLUME 8 It is the first Interduchy Tournament since Ferdinand left for Ahrensbach, and Heisshitze is feeling very pleased with himself for having orchestrated Lord Ferdinand's freedom from Ehrenfest. But as he is about to learn, no good deed goes unpunished.

My current obsession, Ascendance of a Bookworm! It’s a slice of life turned high fantasy political thriller light novel series. I highly recommend it. Let’s just say, I was unhappy with the turn of events in Part 4 Volume 8, so I wrote something to deal with that. Ironically, a lot of what I’d written and wanted to happen actually came to pass, if not in exactly the same way. This was also written at the turning point where I stopped waiting for the paperbacks and ended up reading all the way up through pre-pub. I haven't quite gone so far as to read to web novel.

Fifth most words: The Long and Winding Road

While traveling the West Road, Alistair becomes the unwitting guard of a merchant caravan. When he leaves camp later that evening to gather firewood, he meets a strange, enigmatic elf who is lost in the forest. They spend a brief time together before their paths diverge once again.

This was written for a Dragon Age event! It was a fic exchange in which people requested either romantic or platonic pairings with Solas. I picked the Solas & Alistair platonic pairing. I have them sharing a camp together for the night. It’s a very moody, contemplative piece, I like it.

Least words: Uthenera: Fen’Harel Ver Na

"I lay in dark and dreaming sleep while countless wars and ages past." This song blends the Lost Elf Theme and the Thedas Love Theme, and also introduces a new theme of my own devising which can be heard in the opening bars of the piece. This is a programmatic piece, which means that each part of the song represents an unfolding story. For program notes, see the end of this page.

Feels like cheating though cause it’s not words at all. It’s music. Dragon Age inspired music (though I did lift part of a theme whole cloth for this piece, it was too pretty to deconstruct).

Fic with the fewest words that is actually a fic would be A Terrible Bedside Manner.

By the power of fan fiction, the laws of time and space have been broken to bring us this little nugget: what if Richard Maxwell was working for Regis when he first came to Odyssey? This tiny bit of chaos was incredibly fun to write. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

It’s Adventures in Odyssey crack fic based on the two most compelling characters in the series, who also happen to be the villains (in a series that Did Not Need Any Villains).

Chapter 2: Teenagers Get Confused

The music projected by the subwoofers made the windows of Jasper’s house tremble, announcing the party within a two-hundred-yard radius.

“Jeez,” Lexa said with an amused smirk at the sight of the other teenagers singing and dancing in the front and backyard. “I hope Mr. and Mrs. Jordan are on good terms with their neighbors. It would be a shame if the police came to shut it all down before we get to party.”

Clarke shrugged, her hand already on the front door handle. “Jasp said it’s cool. They are mostly old and a bit hard of hearing. Plus, his parents invite them to barbecues and whatnot regularly, so we should be fine.”

“I can’t believe they let Jasp have a party. Don’t they know him at all?”

Everybody would agree Jasper was a sweetheart with his heart on his sleeve. One of those humans who had to have been a labrador in their past life. Unfortunately, he also retained some of their puppy overexcitement and mischief. A school year wasn’t a school year at Arkadia without him and Monty — his best friend and the other school’s official cinnamon roll — being sent to the principal’s office over a prank.

“I guess they would rather we all party here and stay over than hear about someone getting into an accident on the way back. And don’t forget he roped us all into cleaning tomorrow.”

“Still, I wish my mom were that lax.”

Clarke offered her best friend a sympathetic smile as they zigzagged through the people standing in the living room. Since the divorce seven years before and Drogo’s return to Europe, Dani had raised Lexa alone. And although she trusted Lexa and gave her a fair amount of freedom, as long as her grades didn’t slip, Dani would always be stricter than the Jordans. But then, most parents were, Clarke’s included.

“I know what you mean. I had to bargain with Mom for hours before she let me come. Remind me to buy Dad his favorite cake the next time we go to the mall, by the way. To be honest, I’m surprised Dani allowed you to go to a party knowing there aren’t any adults around.”

Lexa offered Clarke a red cup before grabbing one for herself from the kitchen counter. “Cheers. Honestly, she tried to see if Anya would tag along and keep an eye on us first. But I survived three weeks in Europe with Dad without getting in trouble. And she knows many people drink alcohol below 18 there.”

“Ugh, don’t remind me about those three weeks. It was the longest summer ever without you. Next time, I’ll hide in your suitcase.”

Clarke leaned against Lexa’s side, a pout firmly in place. She was glad her friend had a good relationship with her father. Despite the ocean separating them, Drogo made sure to keep in touch with his only child and often video called and texted. Of course, when he invited her to spend part of the summer with him, Lexa went. But selfishly, Clarke had wished time would move faster — a heresy during the holidays. Nothing was the same without her best friend by her side, and she carried a Lexa-shaped hole in her heart until her return.

“Hey, you know I missed you too.” Lexa wrapped one arm around Clarke’s shoulders and pulled her closer. Between Clarke’s heels and her flats, the size difference wasn’t in her favor, and instead of the kisses she loved to leave on Clarke’s forehead, she placed a peck on her cheek before nuzzling her hair. “I’ll bring you along next time; I promise. Dad won’t mind. He loves you too.”

So, I used to be really involved in the skam fandom, and your fics were my absolute favorite, but I kind of fell out of the fandom, and then shortly after, I just stopped reading skam fic. I will say, I held onto yours for the longest, but I did eventually stop reading. So, I haven’t really checked your blog or anything over the last few years, but I was just in the kiseki: dear to me tag, and I saw that you’d been tagged in a post, and my immediate thought was “JAIME???”. It honestly felt a little bit like a worlds collide moment. I don’t even know why, because obviously it was mlm content then, and it’s still mlm content now, but it like blew my mind for a second. Anyway, all this to say, I’m glad you’re still around, and I’m glad you’re still writing. I’m gonna go read your prapaisky fic now! 😆

I was tagged by @larrysballetslippers , @neondiamond and @hellolovers13 to do a little writing check. I've been writing fics since 2014 at least but only this consistently this year and hoping to do the same in the coming year! Anyways here we go

6. Work I’m most proud of (and why):  I'm most proud of breathe me in. It's my first fic that has been over 10k, which was huge for me. The idea for that came to me as a very random spark and I was driven to write it bc I felt like it'd be special. And it was. It did really well and so many told me it was a comfort read which is the highest compliment in my eyes. I also think it's a pretty good fic.

7. Work I’m least proud of (and why): hmm. I truly don't have a least proud of, but if I were to rank them, it'd be dip you in honey. I still think it's good, sweet and a little funny. I do wonder though if it got a little repetitive at times, or if I overdid the concept. Still, I do love her dearly.

8. Share or describe a favourite review you received:

This is a comment I got on Breathe me in, breathe me out:

I was having a truly shitty time, slipping into a shit bout of anxiety when I started reading this as a distraction and I'm soo glad I did. Having finished it, I'm feeling soo much better and like I'm starting to come out of it. Thank you soo much for this wonderful comforting fic. Sending you loads of love. xx

Just knowing that something I wrote could be of comfort to someone when they needed it?? The bestest thing I've ever been told. It means so much to me. But also literally every comment on my works make me cry a little.

9. A time when writing was really, really hard:

Honestly? Though I've difficult moments with all my fics, the one I struggled with is my Christmas fic, here where you should be. Only bc I was drowning in work, and unexpectedly found myself with no time to write. Or the energy when I did have time. With an extension though I did manage and it's my longest fic and I'm very proud of her, and proud of me for pulling through.

10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:

I can't say any has surprised me yet. But I think the entirety of my pwp, all work and some play, was a little surprising. Bc before that I'd only posted one pwp and it wasn't very good. And suddenly it's a 6k smut. Filthy filthy smut. It kept getting out of hand and I was just shocked that I wrote all of that 😭

11. A favourite excerpt of your writing:

It’s hard to pick, but I like this passage from ‘Curves of your lips’

The prince obliged like a puppet whose strings had been cut, dropping to his knees in one fluid motion. His head was bowed in a reverence that came easy to him- familiar -, a bejewelled crown perched delicately amongst immaculate curls. His hands found their place on his thighs, content, if not for the merest of twitches. With his bowed back, compliant silence, and eyes that lowered respectfully; he was a perfect picture of submission and trust. He deserved to be captured by Michelangelo, right at this moment, but alas, Louis found himself to be possessive of pretty things. And Harry was, by far, his most ethereal and dear possession. Made sweeter only because he allowed himself to be.

12. How did you grow as a writer this year:

Me consistently writing has been the biggest change this year. Before this year, I just occasionally wrote the odd fic here and there. But I’ve posted one fic a month since May this year. I also think I started being able to write longer fics (for me!!), more descriptive, and leaning into my ideas instead of worrying they won’t work. I’ve just said fuck it and written whatever I wanted. I’ve also gotten comfortable with writing smut; 3 very explicit pwps and one currently being written when I’ve never even properly written one before; turns out its really fun. So really, growth all around I think!

13. How do you hope to grow next year:

I’m hoping I write longer fics! Without being afraid it’ll suck. Hoping I’ll grow in my skills, style etc. I’m also hoping I’ll get comfortable with my writing enough to have a beta or two per work; rn I’m not nearly confident enough but I’ll get there! I’m just excited to write more!

14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): 

My motivation and positive influence comes first of all from all the other amazing writers in our fandom; y’all are incredible. To all my moots here, on tumblr and anyone who has ever said a single nice thing about any work anywhere: you have done so much for me and me confidence in my work like I can’t explain. A lot of thanks goes out to my best friend for often listening to me whine, my ideas, my snippets. And my friends who read my work: you’re gems! And lastly but not the least, everyone in the @1d-library discord; I’ve loved being a part of the channel and every single person in there is endlessly inspiring to me.

15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:

Oh all the time. Not sure if its a rule that you shouldn’t put yourself into your writing but I will be breaking it if it is. Sometimes it’s accidental; like Harry in Here where you should be feels a little like me. Or my love of candles solely driving Breathe me in, including my favourite scents ending up being used as the scents for my alpha and omega characters. Its everywhere; my favorite songs, movies etc etc as little flowers I press into the pages of my fics.

16. Any wisdom you can share with other writers

Lord idk if I’m qualified enough lmaooo. But really, and its been said tons, but, write what you want. The reason I’ve written so much this year is bc I stopped overthinking it a little and just started writing the ideas I got. Also external validation is totally okay and if you need a little motivation, get a cheerleading beta!! And your work is almost always, like actually most likely always way way way better than whatever you may think of it in moments of spiralling, trust me.

17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:

Yes! Fics for the omega harry fest and top harry fest. Other fests I wanna sign up for. Incredibly excited by my wips, especially the feral alpha au I’ve been debating doing for the 1d a/b/o fest. The service kink fic I plan on doing next! This is the most ideas/wips I’ve had ever so its a LOT but also very very exciting.

Cross Pollination | An Alice in Borderland FanFic

AHHHHHHHHHHHH THIS FIC TOOK SO LONG!!!! I'm so happy that I finished it, and I get to finally post it. Thank you SO MUCH to the wonderful, amazing, perfect WildelyDawn for encouraging me to write this hot garbage and then helping me edit this fucking MONSTER of a fic. Dawn is also the one who came up with the title of the fic / game so thank you very much for helping me with that!! 😭😭 I hate naming shit lmfao.

This one-shot is by far the longest that I've ever written, and I'm honestly kinda glad that I am done with it.

Anyway, please enjoy the degeneracy that is my brain. 😊😊😊

Summary:

When Aguni and Niragi need a fourth for their game, you  go along like a good, little militant—not that you wanted to join them. Things have been a little weird between you and Aguni since that incident with Niragi. Once you’re actually at the arena, it seems like the game (8 of Spades) is oddly easy for its apparent difficulty. What’s the catch? The dealer decided to use sex pollen to spice things up. 😉

Phew, every time I think I’ve discovered the depth of my depravity, I prove myself wrong. And this shit is pretty fuckin’ depraved. Mind the tags. Since this fic involves sex pollen, there are dub-con elements but, tbh, I went into this knowing that I wanted these characters to all want each other lol.

12. favorite character to write about this year

I could very easily select any of my five favorite blorbos from the show: Della, Dewey, Fenton, Gandra, and Webby. Those five are always a blast to write for.

But I think I’m going to go and say Lena, mainly because she’s a character I always struggle with when writing for her but when I’m done I’m usually really happy with how she turns out

Look I’ll be honest, I’m not a teenage girl. I never was. I’m a He/They adult and whenever I write for a teenage girl I’m always afraid someone will comment “Yeah you could tell a dude wrote this.” And so far that hasn’t happened yet

Also, Lena was a big part of Rainbow Connections, a fic that is a bit angstier and a little less comedic than what I normally do for my fics; and I’m still really satisfied with how everything turned out in that one

Kinda wanna pick two which coincidentally were posted on the same story which is Christmas Rapping! from Home for the Holidays!

First one comes from @thechaseofspades

Mainly for the first paragraph but I do love his karaoke song choices.

Whenever I write DuckTales fanfics my number one concern is always how I write the characters. I want them to be like how they are on the show and I want to represent them. If I’m putting a character tag in my fic I always tell myself “Someone might click on this fic because that character is here. Get them right!”

Because everyone has a favorite character from the show and that favorite character could be anyone. And I’m sure we’ve all been there where we went to check out a fic only to find out our favorite blorbo is NOTHING like how the blorbo really is. It sucks. And I never want to do that

So usually whenever I write for a character I always rewatch episodes or random clips with certain characters to make sure I got them right. Most of the time I ask for second opinions from my beta readers (one of which is a big Louie fan. Whenever I write anything for Louie and need him to beta read I always say “Make sure I got Louie right!”)

And top of that, one of my favorite things about DuckTales is the characters and how they interact with one another. I remember going through every episode and enjoying every time the show threw a new dynamic between characters as it went on. They’re all so good! But we didn’t get all the characters interacting with one another cause Disney is a jerk that doesn’t understand how good this series is! (I didn’t watch the show till after it was cancelled but that’s beside the point) So in my fics I love to imagine what some dynamics would be between characters that should’ve interacted with one another on the show

So yeah, this comment really meant a lot to me! And it was posted on Christmas Day! (At least it was Christmas Day where I was. I was visiting my sister in Hawaii at the time and it was Christmas evening when I got the comment. So that is the cherry on top of this beautiful sundae.

As for the second comment I wanna talk about, it actually came from YOU, @tokuvivor

First off, I’m really glad you thought it was fun! I wanted it to be fun! And yeah, I definitely think Della and Fenton would get along beautifully. They’re great. But what I want point out is the banter part

Honestly, no one has ever really commented specifically on the comedic banter in any of my stories and for the longest time I wasn’t sure if people enjoyed those moments as much as I do

So I love writing banter between characters but at the same time, it’s a big struggle for me and yet all of my stories are filled with just that. It’s strange when writing comedic banter it always feels like it’s either dragging on way too long or just filling up space which of course I don’t want to happen

Usually it’s not so bad when I take a step back from the writing process and read what I’ve written so far and that usually helps me decide if the conversation is dragging or going at the right speed and direction. But comedy is a very subjective thing, what I find funny might not be funny to someone else. So I’m glad you found it funny

On another note, this is also the first time I knew for sure someone liked how I wrote Gandra

So I already mentioned my favorite characters from DuckTales and I already feel pretty confident writing them cause I usually get comments about them, but I never really got any about Gandra

So yeah, I’m pretty insane when it comes to wondering if I got the characters right. I remember when I first got Kudos for Indi-Quack! from someone with a Louie profile pic who wrote a lot of Louie centric fics my immediate reaction was “Yes! I got Louie right!”

Shoot that reminds me that @christianfoxymc wrote this on the first entry in my series The Iron Duck of Steel: The Gizmoduck Movie, Part I! and it still makes me smile

That story took me months to write and just knowing someone out there enjoyed it and thought this highly of it still makes me happy and not want to give up on this story

Then Came The Dawn Pt 1

For a brief moment the chill of the water felt pleasant, salve against the heat of your wounds. It took not even a full second for the pain to come as your body registered the saltiness of the water that was against your injuries. It burned, burned at your very soul.

The surface began to slip further and further away, as your body instinctively struggled against the ropes binding you, desperate to survive. Yet despite the panic of your movements, your thoughts were drastically different.

It was… quiet.

You no longer had the strength to fight anymore. You were ready for your death at this point. You welcomed it. After so long running and struggling to make it just one more day, you were at the end of it all.

It was peaceful.

It was liberating.

‘Perhaps when I close my eyes, I’ll be home again.’

Your lungs screamed for air, your limbs felt like they weighed as heavy as stone. The edges of your vision began to darken as you sank deeper and deeper, the sunlight of the surface looking so close, yet being so out of reach. The black overtook your view, but not before a faint blue glow lit your fading view.

You awoke with a gasp, eyes snapping open and trying to gulp down precious oxygen as if it were going to disappear. Coughs wracked your body as seawater was forced from your lungs, the salt burning and searing as you sputtered. Finally you manage to breathe, the sweet sweet oxygen you’d been so desperate for cooling the salt induced burning of your throat.

‘That’s it, I’m never taking air for granted again. Thank you plants for your dutiful provisions of oxygen.’

Finally you managed to slow your racing heart, opting to take in your surroundings. You were in a bedroom, having been placed on the room’s well, bed. You internally cringe as you realize that you’ve gotten the furniture wet with all of you whole ‘trying to not drown’ stuff. Honestly after months on the run, being in a building was already strange, but being on a bed? That was a luxury you’d long since gotten used to not having. There tends to be a lack of furniture out in the wilderness. You continue to observe your surroundings. The room was a deep navy blue in color, sapphires adorning a silver chandelier that lent the room a soft light. All in all, it was exsquisite, and far too refined to line up with anything remotely akin to your recent standards. You noticed a window and stumbled your way towards it, glad to no longer be bound, even if you’d developed a bad case of rope burn. Your eyes widened in shock at the sight of the outside.

Water.

No, not just water, the ocean. The ocean floor.

You were under the sea.

There was a wall of water a few yards from the window, as if the building you currently were in was shielded from the ocean encroaching any further by an invisible dome. One thing was abundantly clear, whatever had happened after you had lost consciousness, something had saved you, and brought you to this place. Yet who? You would have seen if someone had dived into the water after you, and there had been no one other than you. As you watched a small crab experimentally touch the wall of water before darting through it into the sea, you pondered what could have occurred.

“I am relived to see you awake Your Grace.”

You whirled around, eyes wide and muscles tensed, having learned from the months you’d been hunted to except to be slain at any moment. The figure was unfamiliar, something that stunned you, but their gentle smile was conforming, and you found the tension in your body lessening.

“You need not fear me. I would never wish to harm you, my Guide.”

The stranger was a male, and a tall one at that, with long blue hair that cascaded behind him like a waterfall. A blue teardrop shaped gem was below his neck, which combined with the sight of several small horns that were atop his head, made it clear that whoever he was, he was not a human. It would have been funny if you weren’t so jaded nowadays, that you feared this man less than you would fear a normal human being. Your eyes dart around awkwardly, as you began to realize you’d no idea how to truly hold a conversation anymore. Sure communication had never been a priority to you, but that skill set had quickly been cast aside in favor of survival skills once people made it clear they wanted you dead. You cough a bit awkwardly, unsure how to answer, but the man seems to understand your unspoken distress. His voice was deep, yet it was filled with a gentleness that made it far from intimidating.

Then Came The Dawn Pt. 3

Ever since the execution of the ‘imposter’ Ajax had not used his Vision. When he fought, he did so using only his Delusion. If asked why, he would have given a rather blunt answer. “If Celestia cannot be bother to intervene on behalf of the Creator; I want nothing to do with them or their gaze. I’ve no desire for a gift from gods who stand by while something so catastrophic occurrs. They can have their Vision back for all I care.”

The Fatui were a rather efficient force. However, there were some things that even they struggled to carry through. Which is why four whole weeks after Tartaglia sent out his subordinates to search Guyun Stone Forest; they finally had returned with news. The harbinger had wasted no time, setting out for the cluster of islets immediately.

Upon drawing near to them, the Sigil of Protection began to respond, a sort of invisible tugging urging him forward. He reached what seemed to be a plain and featureless wall of rock, but suddenly the talisman flew from his hand, floating in front of the wall, glowing brighter and brighter.

Childe’s eyes widened slightly as the wall seemed to melt into thin air, revealing a passageway behind it. Shaking off his surprise, he grabbed the now dull sigil and entered.

If his instincts were correct; Osial would know what happened to the so called “imposter”.

You were a bit surprised at how much of a conversationalist the overlord was, but the surprise was soon to give way to appreciation. He was happy to talk about anything and everything with you, from the mundane affairs of your life before waking up in Teyvat, to your slime companions you’d made on the run. You miss them dearly. In return he told you of times before the archon war, lore you’d never heard before coming straight from something who witnessed it transpire.

While on your journey of trying not to get murdered, you’d grown to not talk very much. In fact, it was your capture that brought the first words out of you in months; resigned words of disappointment aimed at the characters you’d once loved. You hadn’t been merciful with them, each statement had been crafted to cut deeply; each one aimed directly at their most sensitive areas.

“Guizhong would be disappointed.”

“So much for your ‘new age’ Kequing.”

“And here you claim to be a pacifist. Lying doesn’t make you look good Ganyu.”

“Judging someone for their appearance is rather hypocritical of you Xinyan.”

“I see your concept of chivalry is as fake as your pen name Xingqiu.”

“All the mora in the world won’t make you a better person Ningguang.”

“Did the other Yaksha murder people too, or is that just your personal habit Alatus?”

“You should get those red strings looked at Shenhe: they don’t seem to be working.”

“Last time I checked, a person who truly pursued justice wouldn’t go along with a witch hunt Yanfei.”

All of Liyue had been there, and you’d made sure to hit each and every one of the vision holders with your blades of harsh words.

Your words had been cruel, and you knew it. Occasionally you regretted them, but then the memory of what you’d gone through, of what they put you through, would come to the front of your mind and the guilt would wither and die on the spot.

Regardless, it was rare for you to speak after what you went for, and you appreciated Osial filling the silence.

While on the run you had loved silence. Silence meant peace: silence meant a moment of respite.

Now though, now that you no longer had the shadow of death lingering over you at every moment, the silence gave your mind ample time to reflect on your woes.

But Osial seemed to understand, as he gladly kept you company, and his companionship kept the demons in your mind at bay. It was only in his presence that you felt safe enough that you could fall asleep, and he would remain with you while you rested, there for you should the trauma of the hunt torment you with nightmares. Osial was always nearby when you awoke.

Which is why your heart was currently pounding loudly. You’d woken up, but he wasn’t here with you. You begin to frantically search for the overlord, only to freeze when you hear Osial seemingly speaking to someone. You know you should confront the situation head on, but you couldn’t work up the courage to do it. Interacting with someone aside from Osial isn’t something you think your ready for yet, and so you opt to stay hidden in the shadows.

He knew these words well. They had come to define him in her eyes. Her eyes that watched intently as he followed instruction, catching every slip up, every misstep. He longed for her eyes to look at him with anything, anything, other than dissatisfaction, but no matter how hard he strove, they never did.

Discardable. Replaceable. Disposable.

Three words that she had thought of him. He was not valuable to her, he was merely a project. One which she began to see less and less reason to keep around. A project that she grew closer and closer to casting aside with every mistake he made.

Abandoned. Forsaken. Alone.

Her betrayal had branded the words upon his nonexistent heart like a hot iron. What did he do to be deserted like this? He tried his best, he gave his all in everything she had him do. So why did she leave him by himself in this dark place? It wasn’t fair, he didn’t want to be alone!

Dark. Cold. Isolated.

He hadn’t noticed in the beginning. He wasn’t aware of the corrosive energies that surrounded him, that ate away at his defenses. He paid no mind when the darkness that surrounded him sunk its teeth into him. He took no notice of how the corrupting fangs tainting his essence, causing the same darkness that surrounded him to grow and fester within him. It didn’t occur to him that his own mind had been stained black with hatred and resentment, nor that his very thoughts had shifted from despairing to spiteful.

Ice. Fury. Jealousy.

No words could properly convey his disbelief when he learned the truth. His face, his voice, his eyes, but not him. Not him. Why did this replacement receive such blessings? Was he not the first?! Even if she did not favor him, he was the first: he was the original! It should be him! He should be the one standing there! Not some copy!

Albedo.

Albedo.

Albedo.

His name. That was his name. How dare this substitute use his name! How dare this replacement use his name, his face, his identity as though it was theirs!

Observing. Learning. Plotting.

He won’t stand for this. He won’t stand and watch this copy have what should be his. He will not be forgotten. He was the first! He was the original! He won’t let himself be replaced!

So when you put characters that don't like each other on the same team or start ranting about how amazing some character/nation is while playing a character that hates them/doesn't live there, etc, little do they know that it's not a coincidence and you're just being a little shit-

(Bonus if you do this with everyone. Mondstadters all think Liyue is your favorite, Liyueans hear you talking about how beautiful and exotic Inazuma is, and Inazumans hear you recall fondly how cozy Mondstadt is. You're like a parent that doesn't want their kids to get a big head so you talk up all their siblings in front of them and only talk good about them when they're not around. In reality you love them all because how could you not? But you're also a chaotic gremlin so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

It wasn’t that you were mean or anything, you just couldn’t help it! They made it so easy! You hardly had to try! Though you admit, there were times when you nearly slipped up and showed that you knew, but for the most part, you acted completely oblivious.

Hm? They were self-aware? Well, duh, obviously. They aren’t exactly slick. Seriously, how would you not notice them doing things that were clearly too complex to have been coded behavior? Plus, it was rather fun to tease them all. And seeing them get jealous about you spending your attention on certain characters; now that was hilarious.

One of your favorite things to do to see their reactions was to replay hangout events, most of the time with some of the characters that were closely related to who you were hanging out with.

Hm? Oh sorry Ayaka, sorry Ayato, you were just busy spending some time with Thoma!

Oops, sorry Diluc, sorry Venti, your busy bonding with Diona!

No matter how smooth they thought they were, you saw the little pouts they’d rush to hide. Honestly they were just too adorable.

Out exploring Mondstandt with the Knights? Hey Jean, hey Keaya, Lisa, Amber, have you ever mentioned how gorgeous Liyue is?

Making the Liyue workaholics take a break? Time for Xiao, Kequing, and Ganyu to hear you gush about how exciting it is in Inazuma!

Spending time with some Inazuma natives? Ei have you ever heard how amazing and fun Mondstandt is?

Okay well, not everything you did was just for the jokes. You did legitimately care about these people; they weren’t simply characters anymore after all. They had real feelings and thoughts, they had real trauma and grief. And while you might not be an expert, you certainly did your best to help them overcome their burdens, in your own chaotic way.

You knew that putting Diluc and Keaya in a team together was literally asking for trouble, but that didn’t stop you! You know they still care about one another, after all they kept each other’s big secret. The relationship was certainly strained, but all jokes aside, you really did want to see them learn to overcome the past heartache that tore their brotherhood apart. And well, if they needed a bit of a push, you’d be happy to provide that.

Okok- I have had this Sagau idea for some time now. What if the reader used to be a legendary cosplayer? Like everywhere anime-con they go people thought the character was real- not only that. But the reader is also a good VA? Bonus points if they are a prankster too.

Jean: alright, their grace is resting in the cathedral after the accident.

Kaeya walking out of the room: Jean, I must excuse myself. I have to go out for the expedition

-10 minutes later-

Barbara opening the door, panicking: Sister! Their grace is nowhere to be found!

Kaeya: Sorry for coming late to the meeting-

*Everyone looking at kaeya*

Kaeya: what's wrong?

Lisa: didn't you say you'll go out for the expedition?

Kaeya: no! Didn't Amber tell you about me being late before the meeting?

Eula:Amber? I saw her clearing hilicurls camp before the meeting!

Albedo: oh no....

(meanwhile the reader laughing their ass off as monstatd blew up)

Misunderstandings

When you had been coming up with the idea for this little prank, it had been much funnier. Frankly you still found it hilarious, but judging from the sword that was being pointed towards you, that sentiment was obviously not a shared one.

“I can explain!”

“I have no intentions of listening to your attempts to deceive me.”

Okay so maybe using your cosplay talents for the chaotic purpose of pretending to be Subject 2 was not one of your brightest ideas. But at least the look of shock on Albedo’s face had been arguably the best thing you’d seen since waking up in Teyvat.

‘Wait! Hold on! Priorities [Name]! First thing is first; trying to not get stabbed!’

“Okay then, what do you want me to do to prove to you that I’m not here to ‘replace’ you?”

“You’re past actions have already ruined any chances of diplomacy between us. Now why are you here? Intending to steal my research again?”

You hear footsteps rapidly approaching and a sigh of relief escapes you as the familiar blonde hair of the Traveler graces your vision. Your saviors had arrived! About time too. Paimon registers the sword pointed at your chest and quickly yells out in protest.

“W-Wait! Albedo don’t hurt them! That’s [Name]!”

The alchemist’s eyes narrow slightly as he looks at you a bit more closely. After what feels like an eternity, the sword disappears as he dismisses it. The traveler walks over to you and lightly flicks your forehead, unamused with your little stunt. Albedo meanwhile, is muttering something you don’t quite hear, though you are able to make out a few words, like ‘reckless’ and ‘unbelievable’ and- oh. Oh he’s muttering about you isn’t he.

Been thinking about Dad!Scott lately, I know some people don’t like said headcanon (and that’s perfectly fine! ❤️) but I wanted to write a post of how it makes sense to me; based from my own personal life experiences/why Scott being a parental figure to Alan’s doesn’t seem so out of left field.

Okay let’s start with Sally, yes Grandma definitely would be the main parental figure after Jeff’s disappearance.She’s awesome, no denying that but she’s only one person. And there are things she can’t do, or things she can’t relate to. Alan an growing boy, and such would probably subconsciously seek out a male role model.

And see as Scott the eldest male in the family, it makes sense that Alan would see Scott as a sort of father figure.(and the other older bros to an extent too) For me, the idea of having multiple ‘parental’ figures isn’t such a strange idea, there are multiple people in my life that I can say have been parental figures to me in one way or another. I grew up with an absent father, so it make sense that I seeked the things I needed from else where.

So in a small way, sort of smilier to Alan’s situation (but very different, and honestly Alan got the better end of the deal 😅) so it makes sense to me that Scott would take on a parental role with Alan. The saying it takes a village to raise a child is one I think is very true, and definitely relates to Alan.

And maybe a part of me just really loves Dad!Scott and Alan because I have daddy issues, and the idea of someone who doesn’t have to be a parental figure, but chooses to anyway, is just so nice?? Anyway that’s me essay on Dad!Scott 😅

Random thoughts, but i like the idea that Scott has reddish toned brown hair. I don’t know why, I just like the idea of Scott having somewhat auburn hair 😅

Like if Scott spend a decent amount of time in the Sun, his hair becomes more of an auburn colour. Basically John isn’t the only one in that family with the red hair genes.

(Scott’s are just a bit more subtle lol 😂)

Actually, imagine as a teenager/kid Scott had lighter, more auburn hair! Like not red like John but still a lot lighter than he has as an adult.

Imagine a young teenage Scott feeling somewhat self conscious about his hair, (because school kids are brutal) and wanting his hair to darken like his dad’s.

Because Scott is always trying to be like Jeff, which is probably why he styles it the way he does 🥹

But yeah, Scott with varying degrees of reddish brown hair 😍

I really enjoyed Our Flag Means Death and I'm glad a second season has been confirmed, but as an Old Guard fan it has been hilarious to see the OFMD crowd acting like waiting an entire ten weeks for news of a sequel was torture. Thinking about “We all remember what it was like.” They all remember, even Nicky and Joe who came into immortality together. After almost a thousand years, Nicky still remembers the confusion and fear and alienation, enough that it makes finding this new immortal their most urgent task.

My favorite fic treatments of their first deaths really lean into this. Not just surprise or awe, but horror. Going a little bit out of their minds, begging to die and stay dead, because that’s what humans do, that’s how the world is supposed to work. I feel it viscerally, imagining the terror of finding yourself so profoundly apart from everything you’ve ever known to be true.

And the only other person who’s in it with you is the enemy you were trying to kill. This is the real impediment to replicating their dynamic in an AU. Anyone can run the enemies-to-lovers course. But enemies to “I still hate you and I don’t understand you but you are the only solid ground in this terrifying new reality and I think if we don’t hold onto each other we’ll lose everything” to lovers is pretty hard to capture in any other setting.

You are reading fanfic. The source property is set in the present day. The fic, maybe because it’s an AU or the canon just works that way, is set in a noticeably different historical period. Which of these answers most accurately reflects your feelings? (choose all that apply)

A. I like it when the writing style (both dialogue and narration) is period-appropriate, or at least a general approximation thereof.

B. I like the dialogue to be period-appropriate, but it’s fine (or even preferred) for the narration to feel more modern.

C. I don’t care either way, as long as there aren’t glaring anachronisms.

D. I prefer that both the dialogue and narration are similar to what I’m used to reading and seeing. So not modern slang or anything like that, but I don’t want it to be jarringly different.

E. I like it when the characters speak the way I’m used to them speaking, even if it’s not period-appropriate.

F. I simply don’t read fics set in past eras.

G. The only thing that matters is that it’s well written.

H. English is not my first language, so old-fashioned phrasing and vocabulary is more difficult for me to read.

I. I actively dislike attempts at period language unless the writer has done enough research to do it correctly.

J. I honestly couldn’t tell you in advance what kinds of things are likely to throw me out of the story, I just know that there’s a potential for it to happen.

K. I read fic because I like the characters and tropes. I don’t pay attention to writing style.

The violence at the end of the episode was upsetting, but I tell you, what has stuck with me in the days since I watched it was "Which one of you gonna fuck me?!" It haunts me. Deeply shocking, viscerally repulsive, absolutely heartbreaking... and just the tiniest bit funny. It's like a gut punch every time I think about it.

I think a very young Claudia is much better suited to a written format. A five or six year old actor can't give the kind of performance that's required... and some things just wouldn't be right to do with a child actor of any age. But a 19-year-old playing a character who's physically 14 opens up so many tragic, horrifying possibilities.

And Bailey Bass is so good. I can't get her face out of my head. "And after forty years... still little boys?" God, there's just so much going on. And you feel all of it.

The tough thing about boundaries is that it’s not enough to state them, you have to enforce them.

I think some folks see “setting boundaries” as a kind of magic talisman to influence other people’s behavior. “I’ll tell you what I need or can’t accept, and you will act accordingly.” And sometimes that’s what happens, and that’s great! But if the other person disregards your stated boundaries, it doesn’t mean setting boundaries didn’t work.

Because boundaries aren’t about others’ behavior, they’re about your own. If the other person’s behavior doesn’t change, then yours has to. “Please don’t discuss [x topic] with me” is a request. “If you continue to talk about [x topic] then I will end this conversation/hang up/leave” is a boundary, which you must then enact. The point is less about stopping the other person (although that’s ideal) and more about protecting yourself. And you have to be committed to protecting yourself, because no one else will be.

You have to be so committed that you’re willing to tolerate other people being hurt or angry or uncomfortable. You have to accept that some relationships might change. You have to hold onto the idea that it’s all right for them to change, because the way they were before was hurting you, and you deserve to not be hurt. You gave them a choice: maintain a relationship or keep doing the thing that hurts you, and they chose to keep hurting you, so if the situation is now awkward or unpleasant that was because of their choice. Enforcing boundaries means deciding that if someone is going to feel bad here, it need not be always and only you.

There is no magic formula that will make other people treat you kindly and respectfully. But you can learn to treat yourself with kindness and respect. That’s what enforcing a boundary is.
