Just wanted to say, having not even seen Dear Evan Hansen, I know you are right about it and feel validated in my aggressive avoidance of it.
I have no idea what post this is in reference to, but yeah, I hate Dear Evan Hansen.
My biggest complaint about it, which everybody seems to just kind of gloss over, isn't about the characters (none of whom I feel I can root for), the songs (which are just... not memorable), or the writing (which feels stilted to me). It's about the story.
It's a rip off of the Robin Williams movie, World's Greatest Dad. The only real differences are that instead of a boy his age, the guy who claims that the boy who died was a good person/friend was the father, and instead of just a suicide note, he also fabricates a whole ass diary. The plot beats might fall a bit differently, but the story as a whole and the message are the same, and you walk away from both frowning.
It pisses me off that it seems like no one has talked about the blatant plagiarism of this musical. I'd understand it if they at least mentioned that yeah, they were a little influenced by preexisting stories that focused on suicide, since it's very clear that this movie (which premiered in 2009, 5 years before the musical came out, and around the same time that the creators started work on the show...) had at least some impact on the musical's creation. There are far too many similarities for it to be mere coincidence.
I know DEH is a lot of people's favorite show, but I actually hate it. Especially and particularly because Robin Williams died in 2014, the same time that the musical began workshops. ESPECIALLY because Robin Williams' death was a suicide.
Plagiarism is not ok. Especially not when the history involving the entity being copied is so depressing.
