Originally a reply to this post with @crazyexdirkfriend and @tipsygnostalgy warning I get offtopic very fast.
You guys are spectacular and I found myself coming back after engaging in a full on discussion with myself over how and why it rings true with many people who share an interest in specifically Dirk and Jake. I thought long and hard for a good few hours, and even now i'm thinking long hard, so I decided to write it down.
Alright first off, lets start with the obvious you are not going to be the same person you were when you were 16. And the alpha kids aren't. They're going to change and modify and adapt in their own ways, and we have to look at how Jake treats his life, his problems and his roadblocks and how they could develop in the future. Because sure as you grow older you become more adept at handling shit but you also are prone to making a few of the same mistakes over and over.
Jakes problem is his own dishonesty and reluctance to be direct, to take the lead. He is to some point aware of it but takes more time fretting about his actions than considering what he can do to alleviate it, and when worse comes to worse, he is prone to straight up fucking off and being a right twat if I do say so myself. He is reluctant to give up comfort and leave first, so he will do what is easiest within his comfort zone.
He faces them by playing up his act and persona (which in of itself is a problem). Hes watched enough movies (arguably some shittier than others) to know what a hero does, to know where responsibilities lie, and what people expect from his act, perhaps even recognise tropes in real life. It's incredibly helpful for making others like him. He's a man of talent in the middle of everything, with good interpersonal skills that afford him the ability to recognise others feelings and understand things well. He's good at pretending too.
The thing with being a middle man- wait. I'm getting offtopic. But whatever. I like talking about Jake. The thing with Jake is that he's so remarkably in the middle, that trying to push him one way or another will make him hold steadfastedly to his comfort zone. You cannot force this guy to change, he will revolt. Progress is slow for a page, and he must rely on others to reach and help his goal and learn how to best use his connections to hope to further his goals.
I guess here is where I bring up an unlikely comparison between the medic from TF2 and how I believe, to some extent, Jakes connection to others work. The medic is a helping class. He is tasked to help power others but also he is an unhinged bastard at his core. if he does not help heal and power others, he is doing his team a dishonour. He cannot afford to be selfish, because he will be called out on it. New medics will usually start out with the idealogy that they should heal everyone they can. Why else would they have chose this class? Teammates are demanding. And eventually under that demand, you can go from "Lets heal everyone!" to "I control who lives and dies". In this case, it's "I control who gets hope and who doesn't." Jake possesses an ability to nudge things in his general favour if he harnesses it right. Is it manipulative? A bit, yes. Necessary? I suppose so.
I guess I could point to the fact that Beta Bro and Grandpa are.. unhinged. I mean seriously, what's up with these suckers and their weird little dolls scaring their fucking kids?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
GG: when i was REALLY young, i was sure the doll sitting across from him did it GG: and for a long time i was terrified of the evil blue girl!!! GG: she sort of haunted my childhood and i had trouble sleeping for a long time
TG: oh man i wish lil cal wouldnt look at me like that TG: with those dead eyes jesus TG: sometimes i dream that hes real and hes talking to me and i wake up in a cold sweat and basically flip the fuck out
I guess it's boiling down to the interest sharing of the Alphas and their Beta versions. Their interests remain the same, regardless of timeline. Roxy still enjoys shitty wizards, wizards in any regard, copes with alchoholism and has an interest in coding (Beta Roxy using it to set up the terminals to create herself and the others for John beforehand as well as making him a neat little suit <3) Jane still enjoys japery and cooking, and Dirk and Jake well... they still enjoy extreme weaponry and strifing. Uncanny, inhuman-like objects whether it be puppets or mummies or mannequins. Extreme isolation, solitary in their own masculinity by choice.
Beta Dirk and Jake are unnerving to say the least in their skill and capability when fully harnessed, whether it be Bro's extreme skills with combat and kickassery or Jakes quite literally orchestration of the beta session that put everything in motion. We see tDirks potential, but in a far more negative prominent light. We see it in Hal. We see it in Bro. Their controlling, if efficient micro-management to get to what they believe is the ultimate goal. We see Jakes potential in the masterpiece, we see Jakes potential in the betas session. He was the one to find the ruins and decode the game, he was the head of the multi-millionaire company heading research on it, employing Roxy Lalonde, he is the one that helped round up and observe the beta kids when they landed on their meteors, the work he orchestrats is admirable if not fucking ASTONISHING. Jake most of all is a strange fucking anomaly we don't talk ENOUGH about. Grandpa is aware of the wider spectrum of the story and what needs to be done and does what he thinks needs to be done. A potential he harnesses after having grown up in an uncomfortable environment. Meanwhile, Jake is aware of the wider spectrum of the story without realising how exactly he knows it, and while burdened by the fact he is quite literally SIXTEEN Jake does show the POTENTIAL, nay, he DOES use it to serve his own desires.

Alright, i figured it out. I think. Alphas carry traits of their beta selves and Dirk and Jakes beta selves were incredibly unhinged and not normal about who they "loved" (seriously whats up with them and those dolls bro) nor their interests, and thus it carries over and is something the fandom is more than ever innately aware of.
Tony put it right. Jake abides by the rules because it's comfortable for him. But shown in situations, he will bend and abandon ship for another pursuit. He can snap. He's incredibly giving but also incredibly reclusive and prone to being pretty fucking shit at keeping up with each other and they're both just prone to indulging hardcore in weird and unnerving hobbies.
Dirk Jake and Roxy all have very real risks of falling into the pits their previous versions did. Dirk, Jake and Roxy, have the potential of their beta versions for better and for worse.
Augh. I don't know where I was going with this. I sort of jumped around and then landed.. nowhere much. But I guess it's fitting. Like i was saying to my buddy John the other day: Because while the beta kids change and grow as people, for at least the better in the story, the alpha kids don't. We only ever see Roxy change as a person for the better, the rest just get worse, and even then, she relapses. Their challenges are left with them finally realising it but they don’t truly change. They just realize it. Anything could go from there, and admittedly it looks *good* for the first few years we see them together. But it can go anywhere. TLDR AKA THE ONLY POINT THAT REALLY MATTERED: The Alpha kids are closely tied to their Beta versions for better and for worse and Bro and Grandpa are the strangest of the bunch which carries implications for the future and tastes that they might have in future.
ITS TG CAN I HAVE YOUR JAKE FANDOM ANALYSIS. IF YOU AREN'T GONNA POST IT. blinks
TG.. :[ *sighs big and loud* dude i got so offtopic in the ramble i swear to fucking god and it was just after looking at your reply to tony.
