Apparently it’s national Sewing Machine Day! 🪡 I’m not normally one for silly holidays but I legitimately could not do my job without a sewing machine! It’s like a cell phone or a car - I take for granted that it’s always there and then realize how much I rely on it when it’s not! . This @berninausa machine was given to me by my mom as a college graduation present and I use it multiple times per week. Its currently in the shop for a tune up and though I have a trusty backup (thank you to everyone who helped me find one so fast!), I’m looking forward to having it back. It’s reliable and a workhorse and I really should give it a name! . Drop name suggestions here! 👇 . . . . . #nationalsewingmachineday #sewing #risingtidesociety #soloverly #amyjowenphoto #beyourownboss #wearethecreativeeconomy #sewingmachine #pursuepretty #favehandmade #memade #makersgonnamake #sewersgonnasew #augustaga #homemadehome #pursueprettythings #sewingmachines #🪡 #🧵 (at Evans, Georgia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cew5z4-uaxt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Week 1 Independent Studies
Task 2:
Notes from resources:
Future of the cities:
How will we sustain future living?
Will urbanization be good or bad for the population, economy, and environment?
Water costs San Francisco nearly 20% of their budget.
How will large volumes of water be transported to growing cities? How efficient and economical will this be?
How will people be transported?
New cities are building highways, but it is more efficient to take them out and use public transport.
How can public transport further enhance our lives, both in efficiency and sustainability?
Car pride?
Could we hide cars under the city to eliminate risk and consumption?
Do more for less
Innovation, Hustling, Reuse resources
People power vs government power
Homemadehomes / ski slope / power house
Mural Arts:
How does art and artists help a city?
What can street art say about itself and surroundings?
Child interaction
Unity
Complimentary colours
Why Urban design needs a better understanding of Maori Culture:
Reclaiming urban areas and expressing cultural heritage.
Unites the people rather than repressing some parts and brings together the wider community.
Positively influences Wellington and further decisions to be made in the city.
Respectful towards the ancestors of the land.
After WW2 Maoris had the fastest rate of urbanization.
There is not enough Maori cultured display around the cities and city centres.
New Zealand is naturally a beautiful country and use of Maori arts could enhance this.
How can we incorporate Maori the land’s Maori history into design today?
Le Corbusier’s Design Reflection:
From looking at Le Corbusier’s design plans for the Ville Radieuse, I would have to say that I would not like to live in it. However that doesn’t mean that I don’t like the idea at all as some of the aspects are definitely noteworthy. Personally I like the idea of the high rise housing, however from looking at the design drawing, there is simply too much of it and too close together. The concept of a large scale community living together is nice in theory, though I believe that it would not suit everybody’s personal needs and could cause issues in day to day life. Most people would have to live in a very small space to accommodate for all of the people and it would be interesting to see some of the room sizes compared to their renting costs.
Le Corbusier says that he would like the separate sections of the city into production and leisure zones, however I’m sure that this would not work very well. The natural and leisure aspects should be woven into the productive side of town to create a positive environment.
Task 3:
Divergent visions of future:
Dystopian Los Angeles
Dislikes:
Murky
Raining but doesn’t look cold
Gloomy, looks polluted
Cramped, people look very compacted together.
Too industrial, though may have just been an industrial area as I have not seen Blade Runner.
Probably smells bad
Likes:
Contrasting and complimentary colours used in the buildings and signs.
Looks interactive between people
Diverse range of people.
Human energy buzzing around the city
Utopian Star Trek Place:
Likes:
Looks very clean
Looks more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
Very intricate
Is much more aesthetically pleasing, reminds me of cocoon from Final Fantasy Xiii
Dislikes:
Everything seems spread out
Not much human interaction, possibly dominated by technology
Would be easy to get lost
Should the beams break it would cause immense damage.

From childhood to Pretty Simple Things...
I've always loved to be creative! Crafty as a child, I've carried this through my 25 years so far and last year I set out to pursue this in a more committed way by setting up Pretty Simple Things.
Born out of a love for creativity and a passion for a homemade home, buying a home with my gorgeous husband Jonny [coupled with the amazing gift of a sewing machine for Christmas], inspired me to set out and make it ours by sewing our own homemade things.
This wasn't as easy as I thought.
A fairly new beginner to the sewing market I didn't know the best place to go for material, what was a good price, what was ethical. And I figured it wasn't just me who would have these questions ... so Pretty Simple Things was born.
With the help of an amazingly talented bunch of friends, slowly but surely the idea for make you own craft kits was formed and here I am today, preparing for Sharrow Vale market on Sunday 20th July. With 420 triangles left to cut out for my bunting, an incredible amount of things on my to do list and all this to do with my one day a week working on Pretty Simple Things, it isn't easy but it is a whole lot of fun.
Pretty Simple Things brings me a whole lot of joy and I hope the people who buy the kits have a whole lot of fun making them!
