Moving Mountains
It is safe to say one of the first things I’ve learned from art is patience. There have been many pieces and projects where I had the opportunity to grow in patience. Sometimes it was because I had an idea then became frustrated when it took to long for it to look right. I was asked to help with the set for VBS at a neighborhood church over this past summer. It was a task that required an abundance of time, effort, and patience. The goal was to create mountains out of foam board (the good stuff from Home Depot), to look like Everest. The project started with a trip to the store for supplies, then an outline, cutting out shapes, decoration, gluing, then painting and it’s finished. Or at least that is what I assumed it would be like. I always percieve how a project will end when I start, it never happes the way I imagine. The pieces I have made had a mind of their own, I think all art does. This was also a time to learn new techniques, which is the reason I love being more of an artistic consultant. It was the first time I worked with a hot knife, I had some learning to do before just jumping in. The decoration on the foam board was created by buring the surface of the board with the knife. Which, if you aren’t careful can burn a hole through the surface. The team and I worked to complete several mountains for the set. My problem solving abilities were also expanded, since, at one time we had to move the largest of the mountains. It didn’t fit through the door, we ended up throwing it through a gap in the wall. The glue was impossible and messy. We’d glue them together and come back THREE days later and the whole piece would fall apart! In the end, the hard work paid off. I’m proud of those mountains.
