Then & now. : : : I’m counting down the days (18 to be exact) before Nasyah’s first bEARTHday. We are on the cusp of leaving behind infancy, early postpartum, being a “new” parent, and saying “I just had a baby.” I wait eagerly but patiently for the 22nd as I know it will be an odd mix of emotions. The postpartum period in a women’s life really never ends. Once you birth a child you are postpartum for the entirety of your life as a wombman. Contrary to popular belief, postpartum is not a shortened term for Postpartum Depression, it is literally a state of being. :: :: :: So as a postpartum woman, who experienced trauma and grief during my labor and immediate postpartum journey, my mental health and my physical health is very important to me. Wellness is my goal alongside being an intentional and intuitive mother. :: Right now, wellness looks like being present, being transparent, and being grateful. I had a c-section. I’ve wrestled with myself for months on whether or not I wanted to share my birth story on social media. Part of my thinks it is empowering to share and the other part thinks it’s sacred to hold it close and seek healing. So I’ve decided on a happy medium, the gist of what happened minus my sacred details. I would like to share that I had planned a calm home water-birth with an amazing CNM. I had great prenatal care and had so much confidence in giving birth to my daughter I medicated and at home. Due to a series of unfortunate events, a hospital transfer was necessary. I was still planning a vaginal birth but then we had another downfall of unfortunate events. I am grateful that we did not have an emergency cesarean birth but I struggle with the fact that I elected to have a c-section. I think about the 3 days I was in labor every single day. I think about how relieved we were to come home and have my midwife back in our home to provide postpartum support. I think about the dreams I had for a homebirth and how each passing hour, they all slipped away. I am taking many intentional steps towards healing and I have found so much support through my village. I am so excited to become a doula and support other birthing people the way that I have been supported.
