8/5/2024 - 8/8/2024
Time for the latest installment of my "Don't post about a vacation until after I'm back home" series:
We were killing time in a mall before leaving for the airport on Friday when I noticed the overhead lights swaying in a store. Felt like a massive train was rolling by just outside, but I knew we weren't close enough to the NJ Transit line to actually feel it. Turns out it was a ⋆⭒˚.⋆4.8 earthquake⋆⭒˚.⋆.
Our flight got delayed for three hours while the runway was inspected for damage. While waiting to get dinner in the terminal, the lights started swaying again and we felt a 3.8 aftershock six hours after the first.
@perilous-pursuit-of-perfection and @humdrumhootenanny picked us up from the airport and let us stay with them and we didn't take a single group photo the entire weekend, but just trust me.
Next day we went to the Ohio statehouse in Columbus for a free tour. Learned that Ohio bounced around three previous capitals before the state legislature passed a law to create a permanent capital. Also Abraham Lincoln was in this building giving a speech to the state assembly when he received a telegram informing him he'd won the 1860 Presidential Election.
Next day went to the Columbus Art Museum and I was trying to get that picture of Morning Sun by Edward Hopper but this hipster couple stood in front of it chatting for honestly more than 10 minutes so I left and came back later. Also there was a cool exhibit from 2023 about "Final Girls" in horror slasher movies. Slumber Party Martyrs by Robin F. Williams was my favorite.
We also went to a Field of Corn, except the corn was made out of concrete. Andrew climbed and stood on top of one without killing himself and it was very impressive.
Day of the eclipse we left for the National Museum of the US Air Force super early and hit no traffic, and were directed to park surprisingly close to the exit. Got to see literally dozens of planes from pre-WWI up through current models (was not expecting to see an actual F-22 on display). Also the B2 stealth bomber is enormous in person and really does look otherworldly compared to "normal" planes.
The sunlight started getting noticeably dimmer about a quarter to 3 PM, and the rate of dimming felt exponential. Things started getting dark very quickly in the last minute. The museum was having a huge event for the day so there were maybe a few thousand people there with us. I thought that would take away from the experience and be distracting, but it kinda made the whole thing even more thrilling to hear a massive crowd around us cheer and shout when the sun disappeared. Totality honestly looked fake. It looked like a hole was punched in an old CRT computer monitor. The air got noticeably colder and you could see stars in the sky. The entire horizon looked like a sunset in every direction at the same time. Honestly got emotional and lost my breath in a physiological reaction; it felt like I got punched in the gut without the pain. About 2 1/2 minutes later a very bright pinpoint appeared in the bottom right quadrant and the sun started coming back. A few minutes after that, looking to the northeast where the shadow continued it just looked like a massive thunderstorm without any clouds.
Managed to beat the crowd out of the museum parking grounds and hit zero traffic on the 1-hour drive back to Columbus. The eclipse was even still happening when we got back to the house.
Other than the earthquake (which, who the fuck saw that coming), this trip went exactly as I planned for, which is such a relief considering how much I was stressing myself out over the weather in the week beforehand.

Home Alone (1990, Chris Columbus)
28/12/2023
Home Alone is a 1990 film written and produced by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus.
Home Alone premiered in Chicago on November 10, 1990 and was released in U.S. theaters on November 16. The film grossed $476.7 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing live-action comedy until the release of The Hangover Part II (2011), and made child actor Macaulay Culkin a celebrity. Furthermore, it was the second highest-grossing film of 1990, behind Ghost. It was nominated for two Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture for Culkin. A sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, was released in 1992.
Chicago, Illinois. The McCallister family, made up of the spouses Peter and Kate and their children Buzz, Jeff, Megan, Linnie and Kevin (the youngest, but often resented and ridiculed by everyone), is about to leave for Paris to spend the Christmas holidays from Peter's brother Rob, married to Georgette and father of Steffan and twins. The evening before departure they are joined by Frank, another brother of Peter, who lives in Ohio with his wife Leslie and their children Tracy, Sondra, Brooke and Fuller. Heather and Rob, Rob's children who remained in the United States, who want to reunite with their families for the Christmas holidays, will also leave with them. During the family dinner before departure, Kevin has a brief scuffle with his older brother Buzz, guilty of having eaten all his cheese pizza that he had ordered. That same night, a powerful gust of wind causes a tree branch to break and fall onto electricity wires, deactivating the alarm clocks and causing a blackout.
In the confusion created to arrive at the airport in time, no one notices the absence of Kevin, still asleep in the attic, who is later mistaken by his cousin Heather for a neighbor child who has come to say goodbye to the family. Taking advantage of the absence of his family, the child decides to let off steam, doing everything he had always been forbidden to do: jumping on his parents' bed, eating junk food, rummaging through Buzz's things and watching gangster films.
Meanwhile, Kevin discovers that the neighborhood where he lives has been targeted by Harry Lime and Marv Merchants, a couple of thieves who are taking advantage of the holiday period to raid homes, after the former, disguised as a policeman, pretends to an inspection and getting as much information as possible from the owners. The two criminals usually plug the drains and leave the taps open, causing flooding in the houses they rob as a sort of "signature", for which they are nicknamed "Wet Bandits". Meanwhile, after landing in Paris, Kate chooses to stay at the airport in the hope that a seat will open up on a flight so she can return to the United States immediately, while Peter goes to his brother Rob with the rest of his relatives to let their children rest. The days pass and Kevin begins to become familiar with the domestic environment: he goes shopping, does the laundry and also prepares the Christmas tree.
Meanwhile, om Christmas Eve, Harry and Marv finally realize that the boy is alone and want to break into the house that same evening, at 9:00 pm. In the meantime, Kate, having managed to leave, stops first in Dallas and then in Scranton, where, however, she is unable to find a seat on any flight to Chicago.

FHA 203k Reno Jobs - What to do when we run into issues halfway through ...
It is almost a guarantee that at some point during you renovation process, there WILL BE a time when you run into something that needs to be done that was not on the original bid.  Do not be scared.  A simple change order can fix this issue(s) when it does arise. On all Reno Loan projects the lenders will force the borrower to borrow an additional 10,15, 20, or 25 percent of the total project cost in order to tackle these issues.  For example: $50,000 project with 10% Reserve Fee would require a $5,000 borrow amount for "JUST IN CASE." The percentage is determined by a handful of items. - were utilities on during the inspection visit? - was the consultant able to tour and "see" the entire home? - do we expect additional issues but can not confirm without damaging the home? These funds can also be used for upgrades!  Maybe you needed a little bit more in order to afford your upgrades appliances?  Maybe you wanted glass door on your shower?  There are endless upgrade options! Just know, ALL projects WILL have change orders but the Reserve Fund is sitting there to help! Warning Signs Your Septic Tank Needs Attention
A well-maintained septic system is crucial for a healthy and comfortable home. Ignoring the signs of a failing septic tank can lead to serious septic tank problems and costly repairs. In this article, we will discuss common warning signs that indicate your septic tank needs attention.
Understanding Your Septic System
Before diving into the warning signs, it's essential to have a basic understanding of how a septic system works. A septic tank is an underground tank that separates solid waste from liquid waste. The solids, or sludge, accumulate at the bottom of the tank, while the liquid effluent flows into the drain field for further treatment.
Common Warning Signs
Several indicators can signal that your septic tank is experiencing issues:
Gurgling Sounds: If you hear gurgling noises coming from your drains, it could be a sign of a blockage or a full septic tank.
Slow Draining Drains: Water that drains slowly from sinks, tubs, or showers can indicate a problem with your septic system.
Foul Odors: Strong sewage smells coming from the septic tank or drain field are clear signs of a problem.
Greener Grass: Lusher grass over the septic tank or drain field can indicate that wastewater is surfacing.
Sewage Backups: This is a critical sign of a failing septic system and requires immediate attention.
What Causes Septic Tank Problems?
Several factors can contribute to septic tank problems in Columbus, GA:
Overloading the System: Flushing inappropriate items like wipes, grease, or excessive amounts of toilet paper can cause issues.
Tank Age: Older septic tanks are more prone to problems due to wear and tear.
Soil Conditions: The type of soil around the drain field can affect the system's performance.
Lack of Maintenance: Regular pumping and inspections are essential for preventing problems.
The Importance of Professional Help
If you notice any of the warning signs mentioned above, it's crucial to contact a professional septic tank service provider in Columbus, GA. Ignoring septic tank problems can lead to costly repairs and environmental contamination.
Septic Tank Service Columbus GA offers comprehensive septic tank inspection, cleaning, and repair services. Our experienced technicians can diagnose the issue and provide effective solutions. Don't wait until it's too late. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

The Top Signs That It's Time for a Roof Replacement
Tumblr media
Your home's roof serves a critical function, keeping you and your family safe and protected from the elements. However, like every other component of a building, a roof has a limited lifespan, and eventually, a roof replacement will become necessary. Knowing when it's time to replace your roof is vital to ensuring the safety, durability, and efficiency of your home.
Expert Roofers Columbus is committed to providing top-quality roof repair, roof installation, roof inspection, and roof replacement services to both commercial and residential customers. Our goal is to educate homeowners about the most common signs indicating it's time for a roof replacement so they can act promptly and safeguard their investment.
In this informative blog, we will detail the top indicators that it is time for a roof replacement, spanning from visible damage to aging materials and interior issues. We will also touch on the importance of consulting with professional roofing contractors, like Expert Roofers Columbus, to conduct a thorough assessment and provide expert guidance on the best course of action.
Visible Damage to Roofing Materials
One of the most apparent signs that it's time for a roof replacement is visible damage to the roofing materials, such as shingles or tiles. Keep an eye out for the following indicators:
1. Curling or Buckling Shingles: Shingles that have started to curl or buckle are more prone to leaks and may indicate underlying issues with the roof's structure, ventilation, or moisture control.
2. Missing Shingles or Tiles: A few missing shingles or tiles might require simple repairs, but if you notice a significant number of missing materials or a consistent pattern of damage, it could be time for a complete roof replacement.
3. Granule Loss on Asphalt Shingles: Over time, the protective granules on asphalt shingles can wear away, exposing the underlying materials to the elements and leading to leaks or deterioration.
Age of the Roof
Roofs have an expected lifespan, which varies depending on the roofing material used. It's essential to know the approximate age of your roof to determine when a replacement may be necessary. Here are some average lifespans for common roofing materials:
1. Asphalt Shingles: 20-30 years
2. Metal Roofs: 40-70 years
3. Wood Shakes and Shingles: 20-40 years
4. Clay or Concrete Tiles: 50-100 years
If your roof is approaching or has exceeded its expected lifespan, it's time to consider a roof replacement to ensure continued protection and efficiency for your home.
Interior Issues and Leaks
Roof damage can also manifest as leaks or moisture issues inside your home. Look out for the following signs:
1. Water Stains: Discolored patches on your ceiling or upper walls may indicate a leak in your roof, allowing water to penetrate and cause damage.
2. Mold or Mildew Growth: Persistent moisture problems in your home, such as mold or mildew growth, may indicate poor ventilation or an issue with your roof's waterproofing.
3. Attic Inspection: Examining your attic for signs of water damage, such as wet insulation or rotting wood, can help determine whether a roof replacement is necessary.
Increased Energy Costs
An increase in your energy bills may be a sign that your roof needs replacement. As roofing materials age and deteriorate, the insulation and ventilation properties of your roof can become compromised, allowing outside air to enter and conditioned air to escape more easily. This can result in higher heating and cooling costs, signaling that your roof's efficiency may have declined significantly.
If you notice a steep or consistent increase in your energy bills, it's worth having your roof inspected by professionals, like Expert Roofers Columbus, to determine whether it's time for a replacement.
Consulting with a Professional Roofing Contractor
Once you've observed any of these warning signs for a roof replacement, it's essential to consult with a professional roofing contractor to assess the situation fully. Here's how a roofing professional can help:
1. Thorough Assessment: Roofing professionals have the expertise and equipment to conduct a thorough assessment of your roof's condition, identifying any issues that may warrant a replacement.
2. Proper Guidance: A professional roofer can provide guidance on various replacement options, considering factors such as your home's architectural style, climate, and budget.
3. Expert Installation: Replacing a roof is a complex and labor-intensive process that requires skilled labor and attention to detail. By working with a reputable roofing contractor, you can ensure the highest standards of quality and workmanship for your new roof.
Final Thoughts
Recognizing the signs that it's time for a roof replacement helps you protect your investment and maintain the safety, durability, and efficiency of your home.
If you've observed any of the warning signs discussed in this blog post, reach out to Expert Roofers Columbus for a thorough roof assessment, expert guidance, and top-quality roof replacement services.
