The Holy Innocents
Feast Day: December 28
Patronage: Babies
The feast of the Holy Innocents commemorates the massacre of the male children, two years old and under, in Bethlehem, by King Herod who obtained information from the wise men who searched for the Christ Child. (Matthew 2:16-18) This massacre fulfills the prophecy by Jeremiah, that a voice in Rama was heard, of lamentation and great mourning, Rachel bewailed her children and would not be comforted, because they are not. They are considered the first Christian martyrs.

#holyinnocents Feast Day of the Holy Innocents who died in the Infant Jesus' stead: Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, 18 "In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not."(Matthew 2:18) Children are precious in the eyes of the Lord and how true their lives and innocence need to be protected moreso in our days: The Lord said: "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea."(Matthew 18:6) God bless all parents who care for their children, their total growth and upbringing and may touch the hearts of all who must recognize the precious gift of children to our humanity! "The birth of every newborn child reminds us of the fact that God is not yet tired of humanity" Rabindranath Tagore - Poet and Nobel Laureate of India. Painting by Valerio Castello, Massacre of the Innocents 1650 circa O ALMIGHTY God, who out of the mouths of babes and sucklings hast ordained strength, and madest infants to glorify thee by their deaths; Mortify and kill all vices in us, and so strengthen us by thy grace, that by the innocency of our lives, and constancy of our faith even unto death, we may glorify thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. “The Massacre of the Innocents” by Bruegel (16th c).
Today is the Feast of the Holy Innocents, the day on which the church remembers the children slaughtered by Herod in his search for Jesus. Pray for all innocent children who suffer and parents who mourn the loss of their children.

I went to the funeral this morning of a little girl who died before she was born. All of the suffering in the chapel was so tangible I could have tasted it even without the salt of my own tears and runny nose. If you don't think the world is full of suffering, you haven't actually looked at the world. We all suffer in big and in little ways, and the largest joy in being Catholic is knowing that God suffers with us in all of the ways we do because He loves us so very much.
the reason i am so drawn to catholicism and the biting bleeding suffering side of talking about divine love is because i grew up in mainstream protestantism (specifically evangelical, although i spent time in pentecostal churches as well) that had a huge focus on fellowship, dressing up for church, pageantry, and doing nice things for the congregation. like this type of protestantism, the soft soul side of tumblr- the peeling an orange, not to me not if its you, richard siken side- comes ultimately from a place of privilege. peeling an orange and giving it to you is a nice gesture, but ultimately hollow. love is not about small gestures, it is ultimately about meeting someone at their suffering. the people that i love the most in my own love, and the ones who i know love me, are the people who understand my suffering, and whose suffering i understand. they have taught me so much about love. it is ugly and it is not about small, beautiful gestures. it is about recognizing how ugly it is to be human and loving that ugliness anyway- not because we gain anything from loving another person, but simply because they need to be loved. as sweet as the sentiment of doting affection and pinterest-aesthetic board love is, as important as it is to feed people and give them a golden kitchen to be fed in, we have so thoroughly aestheticized love that it no longer has substance, and it is the same thing that has happened in mainstream christianity. by stripping the nuance of understanding suffering, by ignoring the constant woundedness of humanity in favour of creating something that appears smooth and beautiful from a distance, we have developed whole societies and hierarchies where the most vulnerable people are consistently left behind because they simply do not fit because they are not beautiful enough. it is easy to peel an orange and feed it to your lover. it is harder to look at a stranger in all of their inevitable ugliness and eat with them anyway.

DECEMBER 28 - The Universal church commemorates the Martyrdom of the HOLY INNOCENTS, also known by many as the "HOLY INNOCENTS DAY" on which King Herod ordered his men to execute all male children in the vicinity of Bethlehem in order to avoid the loss of his throne to a newborn King of the Jews whose birth has been announced to him by the Magi. Let us remember & pray for our dearly beloved brothers and sisters whose their children are also victims of violent abuses & for our those children who are victims of abortion. Holy Innocents, martyrs, Pray For Us!

Reflection: Feast of the Holy Innocents, Martyr
Bless the Innocents and the Children
It’s Holy Innocents Day, so allow me to give some biblical jokes:
Q: Who took the first plane ride in the Bible?
A: The Holy Family. Because they took the flight to Egypt.
Q: Who was the pilot of the plane?
A: Pontius the Pilot
Today’s Gospel recalls how King Herod, jealous and insecure at the news of the newborn Messiah, ordered the massacre of all young boys below the age of two, to make sure no one challenges his grip on the throne. This decree forced the Holy Family to flee to Egypt to escape the massacre of the innocents, thus the name of today’s feast—the Holy Innocents.
It is interesting how the the massacre of the Holy Innocents, a day of tragedy and collective shame for humanity, has evolved into a day of humor, pranks, and practical jokes. Could this be the culture’s unconscious way of exculpating herself for the continuous and prevailing corruption of the innocent pervading in our culture until today?
Honesty and integrity are no longer held in high esteem today. Every day, we hear our leaders say one thing and dismiss it the next day, claiming it’s just a joke. Rape jokes abound and people applaud those who deliver them. Fake news is manufactured everywhere, especially in social media, and it’s almost impossible to distinguish the real from the counterfeit. We have accepted the culture of cursing, even in public for a and from the highest officials of the land, that teachers complain they are ridiculed when they teach GMRC (good manners and right conduct) in school.
The massacre of the innocents is no joking matter. It should not be turned into a day of pranks. Holy Innocents Day should remind us of our noble task to protect the innocence of the young and provide for them a culture of love, decency, respect, and integrity. Today, on Holy Innocents day, let us stop ennobling the trivial and trivializing the noble.
~Fr. Joel Jason
Do you approve or are you indifferent to the culture of killing and cursing that is prevalent nowadays?
Incline my heart to the love of  Your law, O Lord. Amen.
Prayer
… for a deep and profound respect for life, especially for the unborn.
… for the strength and healing of the sick.
... for the healing and peace of all families.
Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.
GOD BLESS!

Feast day - holy innocents
Feast day – holy innocents
Herod “the Great,” king of Judea, was unpopular with his people because of his connections with the Romans and his religious indifference. Hence he was insecure and fearful of any threat to his throne. He was a master politician and a tyrant capable of extreme brutality. He killed his wife, his brother, and his sister’s two husbands, to name only a few. Matthew 2:1-18 tells this story: Herod was…
