Posted @withregram • @shabbosreads Historian and author David Nirenberg looks at another time in history when calls of antisemitism were refuted by saying that it wasn’t the fact that they were Jews at all, but their actions that were generating these hateful sentiments.
That time? Eastern Europe in the 1930’s and 40’s.
If we do not learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it.

It's Holocaust Rememberance day. Like any number of my friends, I have extended family who didn't make it out of Eastern Europe during those dark times. I remember reading #AnneFrank when I was a young girl, crying. The phrase often echoed in my community when I was growing up was, "never again!" But the moment I remember most vividly is from when I was in college. I was living in London, studying classical drama and went on a trip with other students over the spring holidays. We met up with some other students in Germany and went to the Auschwitz museum... As I walked through, I started to cry. Afterwards, I sat on a step outside and sobbed... Another student walked up to me and sat down, I can't remember his name now, but he was a Poly-Sci major. I looked at him and said, "never again." There was a pause and then he said simply, "what are you talking about, it's happening right now in South America and parts of Africa. It's happening every day." That stuck with me... and so here we are...

For International Holocaust Remembrance Day I say #WeRemember. Having family members become victims to the holocaust, some survived while others didn't. So today WE REMEMBER! #EBennett #jewish #internationalholocaustremembranceday #ProudJew #holocaustrememberance

“Within 20 years, there will be only these objects speaking for this place,”- Anna Lopuska, conservator at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum (Dobadio, “Preserving the Ghastly Inventory of Auschwitz,” 2015) This quote only emphasizes the importance of “preserving authenticity” of objects that prove that horrors like the Holocaust occurred. They force us to remember what happened at such places as Auschwitz. How can preserving these objects and sites affect how we remember the Holocaust? What effects does the “authenticity” of a site like Auschwitz have on its visitors? What about on the people that work to conserve it every day? #artconservation #holocaustconservation #Holocaust #HolocaustRememberance #WeRemember — view on Instagram http://bit.ly/2PjLPVJ

#FreeSargon: Twitter Suspends Sargon Of Akkad After He Tweets EU Official About Europe’s Immigration Policies
We Are Change
Twitter suspended the account of YouTuber Carl Benjamin, who goes by the name “Sargon of Akkad” on Friday, after he Tweeted an EU official with questions about Europe’s current immigration policies.
Sargon suggested he was suspended for sharing his criticism of Islam in a Tweet to the high representative to EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Fedrica Mogherini.
Mogherini tweeted, “#holocaustrememberance: A peaceful and diverse Europe it is everyone’s interest and responsibility.”
Sargon responded,“Hasn’t mass Islamic immigration to Europe drastically raised the odds of terror attacks, though?”
However, Sargon noted that Twitter has yet to give him a reason for the suspension.
“I have no idea why and no reason has been given so far,” Sargon said.
youtube
Sargon was conversing with We Are Change’s founder, Luke Rudkowski, when he was suspended.
(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));
No, WTF twitter police? I was just talking to @sargon_of_akkad on DM about something important, anyone know how else I can reach him?

Twitter has been a proponent, as of late, of banning some accounts it deems to have used “hate speech,” while ignoring others.
Suspending a user for proposing a question now, though, even if it is a question that no one wants to face, raised the question: Are we living in the paradigm of 1984? It was a fictional book, not an instruction manual for big social to follow to ban anyone they disagree with.

While social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have suppressed and censored users, there are other alternatives. Check out We Are Change On Steemit and Gab:
Steemit: https://steemit.com/@lukewearechange
Steemit presents itself as “a social media platform where everyone gets paid for creating and curating content” through digital media points calls “Steem” that can be transferred into Bitcoin.
Gab: gab.ai/wearechange
Gab presents itself as an alternative to Twitter that allows “Free Speech for everyone.”

Today is a very sad day for me and I'll never forget the generations of children that could have been ...but on this day I also remember that day I stood on a roof top in the holy city last summer. While no one else seemed to be paying attention I noticed the beauty of little children playing soccer and screaming in Hebrew. Their laughter echoed through the streets of Jerusalem and also through every fiber in my being . Even after all the antisemitism and the death of 6 million of my people, we are still alive, we still smile, we still exist and we have Israel. That day my heart was so warmed with hope for my people. I pray that it will always be that way. #neverforget #sixmillion #theholocaust #jews #yomhashoah #holocaustrememberance #israel (at Israel )
