“I need to head down to the gym for a bit, are you going to be alright here?” Lando asked as he gently lifted your head off his legs.

You dropped the hotel guide you were flipping through after unpacking your bags and sat up so he could get up off the couch. “I’ll come with you.”

“You’ll come to the gym?” he asked as his eyebrow cocked up in surprise.

“Don’t be silly,” you scoffed as you waved the hotel guide his way. “I’ll be in the spa. They have a full salon service.”

He pulled you to your feet and into his arms as he brushed his lips softly over yours, teasing you until you rose on your tiptoes to deepen the kiss. A small groan escaped his throat as he pulled away and combed his fingers through his hair. “I already don’t want to go.”

“Sorry.” The smile on your face contradicted the apology and Lando chuckled at the sight, knowing you were not feeling sorry at all. 

“Come on then, before you distract me again.” He slipped a room key into your pocket and laced his fingers with yours before heading to the elevator. As soon as the elevator doors closed he looked at your reflection in the mirrors and remembered the intense ride up. “This was a bad idea. This is very distracting and it’s your fault.”

You turned to face him, head tilting as you looked up through your lashes with an innocent smile. “It’s not my fault you are so easily distracted.”

“But you are the distraction.”

You caught your bottom lip between your teeth at the heat in his eyes. “Is a workout really that important?”

His hand reached past you to the panel, his finger aiming for the floor button you had just left, but then the doors opened at the leisure centre and you skipped out before he could hit it. 

“Mr Malvern would be very disappointed if you missed a cardio session because you got distracted,” you teased as you pressed your key card to the gym entrance and opened the door for him. 

He tried to stifle his smile as he looked down at his shoes and stepped off the elevator, his body brushing yours as he passed the doorway to the gym. Unable to resist his own teasing, he dipped his head to yours as he walked by. “There’s more than one way to get a cardio workout, love.” His lips brushed your cheek as light as a feather before he was gone, throwing a wink over his shoulder as he left you struggling to remember how to breathe.

You were still half in a daze as you headed to the other end of the hall where a pair of opaque glass doors awaited, his words playing on repeat in your head the entire way.

“Is this something special for tonight?” the beautician asked as you placed one hand under the UV light and she painted the other nails. 

“Hopefully,” you admitted with a smile mostly to yourself as you looked over the menu of services. “What’s the go with waxing?”

“How do you mean?” 

“It’s, um, been a while since I’ve been with anyone, if you know what I mean…do guys expect a Hollywood or Landing Strip or anything?”

She screwed the lid on the nail polish and placed it down on the table. “In my experience, if he's worth a grain of salt, he won’t care. But, it’s a Hollywood that we get most requested.”

You felt like a new woman as you stepped out of the salon with your nails done, a fresh blowout in your hair, and not a single strand of hair on your body from your newly tinted and shaped eyebrows to your toes. The beautician had been one to remind you with each strip of wax, ‘beauty is pain’ and she was right, but the result did wonders for your confidence.

Though you couldn’t see the sun outside, the time on your watch said it was only 6pm as you stepped into the suite. Lando said his surprise wasn’t going to start until 9pm so there were still a few hours that your imagination had many ideas on how to fill. Just the thought of what you were planning was enough to leave you giddy, with an edge of nervousness.

You had been with René since you were both teenagers, learning how to love with all the finesse of two bumbling toddlers learning to walk. It hadn’t been pretty at times, and the both of you had stumbled as you found your footing, but before you knew it you were running together hand in hand. You had thought it would be that way forever.

You didn’t have the naivety that came with the rose tinted glasses of young love. You were older now, not just physically but in your soul. While other women your age faced breakdowns in relationships or lost their partners to infidelity, yours lost his life. 

Before René died you had thought widows were grey haired grandma’s, they weren’t in their 20’s, they weren’t you. Until it was.

Now you had to learn how to love once again, learn what the other enjoyed and disliked, make mistakes and learn from them. It was exciting and saddening at the same time. It was more confusing the longer you thought about it.

A sweet scent hit you as you stepped inside and closed the door. “Lando?”

“Just a sec,” he called from the bedroom and you followed his voice to find him in the bathroom, bubbles overflowing the tub and rose petals sprinkled all around the room. 

His back was to you as he bent over the counter and you could see the definition of each muscle as he moved, lighting a scented candle like the dozen already flickering in the darkened room. The sweatpants he had changed into after his workout hung low enough on his hips to reveal the two dimples at the base of his spine and the warmth of his skin called you closer until you could wrap your arms around his waist and rest your cheek on his shoulder blade. 

“Hey,” he greeted softly as he blew out the match and turned in your arms. 

“Am I interrupting a little me time?” you asked with a smirk. “You should have put a sock on the door if you wanted privacy.”

Lando’s laugh echoed off the tiled walls before he swept you up into his arms. “You’re gonna pay for that, smartass,” he promised as he stepped into the bath and sank down into the hot water with you still fully clothed. Water overflowed the lip of the deep bath and flooded the floor but you didn’t care as your head fell back with a laugh.

“I just had my hair done,” you managed to say through the giggles as you flicked bubbles out of it and tried to save it before seeing the mess on the floor. “Housekeeping is going to hate you.”

“I can take the trouble,” he said with a smile. “You’re worth it.”

Shifting onto his lap, you placed a hand over his heart and felt it beating beneath your palm. “I had plans, you know.”

Settling back into the curve of the bath, he relaxed beneath you with his hands on your hips. “Yeah?”

“Mhmm,” you hummed as you took his hands, gripping the hem of your shirt as you drew them up your body. “I think you might have had the same one.”

His smirk grew as he pulled the shirt over your head and tossed it aside. “You were going to bathe me and massage my feet by candlelight too?”

“I might be skipping a few steps.”

“So impatient,” he tutted as his thumbs drew circles over your ribs, each circle inching him closer to the lace of your bra.

Your patience had been infinite all your life. You had been a patient girlfriend, putting your career on pause so you could travel with René and support him early in his career. You had been a patient fiancée, delaying the wedding when René needed to focus on racing and planning was a distraction. You had been a patient wife, waiting until René retired before trying to start a family so he didn’t miss out on the things that matter.

Your patience had finally run out. 

“It’s selfish,” you corrected as you leaned forward, your lips hovering over his as you looked into his blue eyes that reflected the dozens of flames flickering around the bath. “I want you, Lando, and I don’t want to wait any longer.”

You could feel beneath the sweatpants how much he wanted you too but there was hesitancy in his eyes. Or maybe it was more akin to regret.

“What are you thinking about?” you asked quietly as he sighed.

“Fucking Max.”

Your jaw fell slack before you recovered. “Not what I expected,” you muttered as you started to climb out of the bath.

“No, that’s not what I meant. Fuck,” Lando groaned as he pulled you back down onto his lap. “I want you too, so so so badly, but I ordered us dinner and it’ll be here any minute. That was Max’s suggestion, I knew I shouldn’t have listened to him.”

A knock sounded at the door and a muffled ‘room service’ reached you a moment later. 

“Come in,” you called back and the front door clicked open before the rattle of a trolley clinked as it was rolled into the room. “Leave it there thanks!”

“Certainly, ma’am, just call reception when you’re ready for the dishes to be cleared.”

Your eyes hadn’t left his as you waited to hear the door click shut.

“Food is going to get cold,” he warned at the telltale sound that you were alone once again.

Your lips had gone dry from the deep breaths you had been taking to steady your racing heart and he watched your tongue roll across them, your stomach somersaulting at the hunger in that stare. “I don’t care.”

Fresh water sloshed over the lip of the bath as he sat up closed the distance between his lips and your skin, his teeth grazing over the supple skin of your breasts. “Off,” he ordered as he pulled the cup of your bra down and sealed his mouth over your nipple.

You obeyed in an instant, reaching back and unclasping it before dropping it to the floor with your shirt while his tongue drew his name from your lips. Your hips rocked over his but your shorts and his sweatpants kept you from what you needed most and a frustrated whine escaped. “Lando, get me out of these damn shorts.”

A small pool was forming outside the bath as you climbed out with Lando following quickly. There was a furious need to keep close and your fingers tugged at his hair to bring his lips back to yours while he fumbled with the button on your denim shorts before pushing them past your hips. You relinquished the hold on his curls to pull the string of his sweatpant loose and your core clenched as the white material of his boxers had turned clear with the water, leaving nothing to the imagination.

The sodden sweatpants caught around his ankles as he took a step closer and you gave a small squeal as he stumbled into you, the soapy bubbles covering the tiles giving no purchase as the ground rushed up to meet you. Lando tried to help catch you but with his pants tangled all he did was end up splashing onto the floor beside you, shock and horror plastered on his face.

You wiggled your fingers and toes, satisfied you weren’t hurt, before a giggle escaped and you lay down on the warm tiles as more laughter filled the air. It took a moment, a heartbeat even, for Lando to join you and sprawl across the floor with his deep laugh echoing yours. 

“This is not what I had planned,” you said between the giggles you couldn’t stop. “Are you alright?”

“Ego’s a little bruised and my confidence could do with a bandaid,” he said with a chuckle, pulling you into his arms so your head could rest on his shoulder and not the hard floor. 

You shifted in his arms, cupping his face as you smiled at him and washed away the worry that lingered in his eyes with a kiss. 

This kiss was a far cry from the desperate need earlier, it was soft and slow, reassuring. It was a promise that you hadn’t changed your mind because you had ended up in a mess on the floor. It had actually endeared you to him even more, if that were possible. Up until now everything he had been planned worked out perfectly that you were worried you would fuck it all up. But he was human. A handsome, kind, perfectly normal human who was trying his best and it made your heart swell with emotion.

 Retreating from his embrace, you grabbed the sweatpants from where they were still tangled around his legs and pulled them free.

“What are you doing?” he asked as he pushed up onto his elbows, his abs tensing as you crawled up his body, your fingers slipping into the waistband of his boxers. 

His breath shuddered as you pulled the material away and bit your lip at the long hard length that sprung free. “Giving you a bandaid.”

🌸 i find this to be like my little lucky charm and i think it actually works, but, bring around a tiny picture of your fave forest animal and its like all animals love you and i seem to always get the compliment that i would be a woodland flower princess that talks to animals! lol and animal lover always radiates the most angelic glow ugh!!! 💞🐇

Human Alastor slowly slithering into madness after his wife/muse has been killed, hunting down Vox's killers, chasing them with the fury of a unleashed god.

Would he keep Vox's corpse? I feel like he would. Like, he'd have it taxidermied, or put in a glass case and it vacuumed sealed and all that, have Vox well preserved.

Also, i think he'd definitely talk about his wife a HELL of a lot more on his radio show, even if they were never married. Like, Vox being the turning point to him falling and becoming the serial killer we all know he is--delicious.

I think even in hell, when/if they're reunited (cause if Vox was a starlet/or famous in a different way she/he could be a winner and in Heaven. Although I'm sure Vox would fall for Alastor.) I think Alastor would talk about his wife. Like constantly. Idk.

oh yeah al would DEF keep a reminder of vox. i think in the scenario i thought up, vox had her head crushed by a tv sooo embalming(im assuming thats what u meant by taxidermy lmao)/preserving the body would be difficult, so al would probably keep her ashes or maybe a piece of her favourite outfit in a locket. like those hair lockets they used to do in the victorian era!

certainly LOL. i think in general al isnt much of a romantic but i think in the case where her wife is murdered and shes still searching for the killers, a lot of her subsequent broadcasts would be centred around keeping her wifes memory alive bc by killing vox, her murderers meant to try to take away her fame in the tinseltown stardom scene

(also i cant imagine a world where vox doesnt go to hell. tbh. i feel like here, she'd indulge in a lot of vices and fuck over other people without even giving a second thought to it, and even though she'd inevitably have a pretty horrible past courtesy of being a female hollywood star, it wouldnt be enough to excuse her of the actions that got her to the top. but the idea of vox falling from heaven just to reunite with al..... hm. uve intrigued me nonny)

(loud correct buzzer noises) YEAAA al talks about her wife all the time once they're reunited in hell. sections of the radio broadcast is dedicated solely to vox and she plays a new song for her every time

Stray Thoughts: A Thumbprint on the Sky

If you work days, one tidbit that makes life easier is to live east of where you work, if you can. That way you’re driving west in the morning, and east in the evening, and both ways you get to avoid most of the sun-glare. This is not just more comfortable, but a small yet real decrease in the general threat level of driving, because you’re not trying to pick out oncoming traffic and sudden lane shifts while also staring into the sun.

On some lucky mornings, you also get to see the moon hanging in clear blue as it sets in the west, like a thumbprint on the sky.

...You have to wonder how that affects Hollywood werewolves.

Not folklore werewolves. All of those I know about really could care less if the moon is full or not, or it’s daylight or dark. Then again, same thing with vampires; falling to dust in sunlight is definitely a Hollywood thing. Although there are various flying-head monsters (a few of which are vampiric) that flap around hunting people at night but must return to their bodies by dawn, or die.

But it turns out the moon is visible by daylight potentially most days of the month. The exceptions being on or around the full moon (moon’s about opposite to the sun) and the new moon (too close to the sun to see it). First and last quarter are the best times to see it... but because the moon is pretty close in light level to the sky itself, you need a clear spot in any clouds.

It would be really interesting to see that worked into monster-hunting lore. If you’re working with a magical system in which liminal things are powerful, then a point in the day in which the moon is visible in daylight might be key to working interesting spells. Or finding the grave of a hidden vampire. Or, possibly, identifying a shapeshifter even in human form. Or even breaking a curse of lycanthropy!

After all, sunlight is often associated with purification; with good reason, given UV exposure is hard on many infectious bugs. Having the sun and the moon in the sky at once might be the perfect event to nail that unwillingly cursed were-creature with a purifying cure. “A night without a day, and a day without a night!” worked the cure in Ladyhawke. If the sun is day and the moon is night, that doesn’t just have to be for eclipses!

Anyway. Just a few thoughts. Whether they work for your writing or not, you should keep an eye out for the moon by day. It’s pretty!

...come in all shapes, sizes, colors, creeds, etc etc. there is a clearly drawn line between them and other nightfolk genetically, but there are many vastly different ways one can be made - and who they can turn out to be, what abilities or talents they could have. it's a mixed bag between the undead and those who live but are of colder blood, and bloodlines / sires heavily influence genetics, inherited abilities, tolerable diet, general health issues, and plenty more ( for example: the morteatum family has a unique affinity toward the water element. moving water is a danger to most vampires (the psychic and energy varieties excluded) except the morteatums, as their affinity occasionally births a child capable of traveling over bodies of water safely, without bursting into flames & the power to manipulate it; a trademark of their genetic line is pale pink irises and silvery hair )

there are two types of vampires, however; blooded vampires, who are natural-born, and turned vampires, which needs no explanation. blooded vampires have a distinct advantage over the others in that they're able to call upon multiple elements in the same manner as sorcerers and wizards. turned vampires, unless already possessive such control, do not, only capable of the typical vampiric shapeshifting (wolf, bat, cat), mist step, short-distance teleportation, vampire telepathy, and so on - they inherit all the same weaknesses too ( uv light, silver, iron, sanctified objects, garlic allergies, bloodthirst, compulsive counting, etc )

they can naturally charm, bewitch, and enthrall, glamour themselves and hypnotize others into doing their bidding. they can transform into bats, cats, and wolves from birth / turning, mist through select physical barriers, fly, levitate, teleport, call upon insects, bats, wraiths, use various necrotic spells, disappear in mirrors, are immortal but not invulnerable, telepathically communicate with those they've bitten, have high resistances to necrotic and ice magic.

unfortunately for everyone, the non-monstrous sorts are incredibly beautiful. ethereal, elf-like, even fairy-like in some respects. beautiful creatures who ensnare their victims in charming webs of sex, intrigue, mystery, and indulgence before entreating them to a vicious end.

in the modern day, vampires are barred from feeding on the living, forced to find sustenance from blood donation centers exclusively. there is a schism among them in part for this reason, headed by the vampire separatist group the red hand (comprised of the morteatum, mausolea, montgomery, and morningstar families as well as other, non-familial members). anyway, blood is vitally important for them to survive and with limited or heavily restricted access to it, they are effectively starving under the u.s. department of regulatory sorceries. there is a lot of political fuckery going on among the vampire nobles; some are in positions of governmental power, beyond the drs. plenty more occupy other positions of power in sanguinarian churches, hollywood, meatpacking, medicine, and other industries. they're quite the enterprising bunch and love politics - manipulating people into doing their bidding never gets old.

they have their own language, but there are very few who know it well. only the oldest vampires such as dracula, some members of the sanguinarian clergy, and certainly the vampire nobles know it. there are a handful linguists who may happen to know some of it, but it's notoriously difficult to learn in the first place and vampires aren't too keen on having their secrets exposed.

the 600 headcanons thrown into this all deserve their own post, but bloodthirst desperately needs to be mentioned here as it is a very difficult part of being a vampire. it's an intense hunger that, if ignored for too long, results in a steady degradation of the mind and reversion to a primitive, feral, or doll-like docile state. it starts with anxiety, impulsivity, hypersexuality, compulsion, obsession, mood swings, blackouts, and random fits of desperate violence. crimson shadows in the periphery, tainting irises deep scarlet, and the sclera blackens. often, a vampire will suffer dizziness, exhaustion, panic, achy joints, temporary loss of cognitive function... the list goes on. advanced stages of bloodthirst will cause a vampire to regress into a more bestial state, morphing them into a twisted, monstrous exaggerations more commonly found in folklore. ghoulish creatures with translucent, skin and gnarled fangs, too-long fingers and a complete loss of identity, hair, sight, rationality, and more; they become no better than gangly undead rats with no fur. on top of this, they lose their resistences to all magic, physically cannot stop themselves from going into a frenzy and drinking insatiably-- it's a mess, it's a mess, and transformations as well as symptoms can change depending on the individual. in any event, they become something else, something that is vampire no longer. it's an extremely terrifying prospect and potentially a certainty for most of them.

so i just saw ur letterboxd top 4 and notice you like old hollywood!!! i've been trying to get into them bcs my dad just subscribed to criterion channel. i wanna get into b&w movies as well but dont really know where to start 🫤 for the record, i loved its a wonderful life but we watched the colored version 😭

anyways, i'd say its a bit difficult to dip ur toes in the oh pool, bcs there are some details that didnt really age well. but the first one i watched was the philadelphia story (1940) and the humor and story telling was so top tier that i could not help but fall in love with b&w films lol.

ive read some modern shuggy fics and even the the ones uve recommend but i wished there would be that go like shanks being a movie star ((so luffy still has to have an idol in modern au somehow)) and buggy, a drag queen, and they're dating and has uta as their still-idol daughter............ they're pushing 40 and emperors of the sea (celebrities in op world), they always gotta be broke and in college in fics and im tired of it!!! That’s a brilliant idea! They totally would be that Hollywood celebrity family, literally all of them are famous in canon.

Shanks would be an A-list action movie star who notoriously does his own stunts. He then had to semi-retire after an accident cost him his arm. He’s still acting of course, but he goes for less intense, strenuous films nowadays.

Buggy’s rise to fame was more gradual. He started out doing drag shows at low-profile clubs. Then he competed on Rupaul’s Drag Race, ended up winning and got attention there. He gained a cult following and his influence now spreads through multiple platforms. (He’s not quite as famous as Shanks, but Buggy does more social media. Shanks has an Instagram account he posts on once in a blue moon.)

Uta is literally a musical progidy. She’s been writing her own songs since she was seven. She actually first started singing anonymously, releasing her songs online under a pseudonym. Then when she got older, she finally revealed herself.

Shanks and Buggy kind of have a messy history since they were kids. But now they’re settled down and happily married, and they have enough money to live comfortably and pursue whatever creative projects they want. They travel the world and live freely while being disgustingly in love.

It’s so true, I’d love to see more fics where they’re old and have jobs.

Idk if uve seen The Bear bt this is why im so excited to have Ayo Edebiri, a yung dark skinned actress! Her career has really taken off,esp this yr, she was just Emmy nominated for her role in The Bear. Shes also a writer and starting to become more of a fashion gurl too, very talented woman overall

But yea, I've been watching Ayo continue to grow in her career. 😁👍🏾 She's been in Abbott Elementary, and she'll be in the upcoming "Bottoms" movie. I'm def curious to see how her career goes!
