Each year, without fail, the boys of Monsta X would engage in a playful tradition. As the holiday season approached, they’d don their festive hats and drape holiday lights around the dorms, laughter and merriment filling the air. The main event, however, was the hanging of the mistletoe. As per tradition, they took turns tossing it up, the small plant eventually finding a home amidst the maze of lights and decorations. As it dangled there, seemingly innocent, the boys would vigilantly watch, waiting for one of their own to succumb to its charm.

This year was no different. The dorm was filled with the aroma of freshly baked cookies, and the hearty laughter of the boys filled the air. Minhyuk, the one with a legendary aim, was entrusted with hanging the mistletoe. He launched it into the air with a hoot, the boys erupting into cheers as the mistletoe found its place on the ceiling. The holiday ritual was now set into motion.

This year carried a decidedly different undercurrent, however. The boys had an ulterior motive in their holiday games. They had noticed the closeness between Y/N and Hyunwoo over the years. They decided it was time for a little nudge in the right direction. The mistletoe, a symbol of love and friendship, became the perfect tool for their grand plan.

Every time Y/N arrived, they’d somehow arrange for her to be close to Hyunwoo. When they played cards, Hyunwoo sat next to her, their hands brushing slightly as they reached for their cards. The boys’ eyes would sparkle whenever a soft blush crept on their faces. Yet, every time they seemed to move even closer - a promise of a moment under the mistletoe - something would inevitably interrupt. Once, there was a loud crash from the kitchen as Hoseok tried to make hot cocoa. Another time, it was the surprising early arrival of their manager for a sudden meeting.

Hyunwoo, oblivious to the boys’ plans but painfully aware of his own feelings for Y/N, would just look on ruefully at each missed opportunity. Y/N, for her part, seemed equally flustered by these interruptions. Her eyes would glimpse towards Hyunwoo, a question in her eyes that he wished he could answer.

As the days passed and Christmas drew closer, the boys grew impatient. Their plan had yet to come to fruition, and the mistletoe’s charm had yet to work on Y/N and Hyunwoo. But they were not discouraged. Hoping and plotting, they were sure that the holiday magic, the timeless charm of the mistletoe, would finally bring Y/N and Hyunwoo together. After all, it was the season of miracles.

Low whispers echoed through the dorm as the boys planned their following scheme. Y/N was coming over again, and they knew they were presented with another opportunity. Determination painted their faces, the yen of playfulness reflected in their eyes more than ever. This time, they stacked the deck more in favor of Hyunwoo and Y/N, finding themselves under the mistletoe.

Shuffling through various strategies, they finally laid out their plan. They set up a cozy corner near the Christmas tree, carefully arranging the snacks and games. Amidst the twinkling fairy lights and festive decorations, the infamous mistletoe was craftily nestled, hidden in plain sight. Everything was laid out to lead Hyunwoo and Y/N to that corner - the warmest blankets, their favorite drinks, even leaving two spots vacant for them to sit next to each other.

As the doorbell rang, their heartbeats quickened in anticipation. Y/N’s arrival was met with loud greetings, her cozy winter sweater and contagious smile lending more warmth to the festive environment. As the night progressed, Hyunwoo and Y/N found themselves drawn towards the planned corner, laughing and talking, clueless of the intricate plot.

“Let’s hope no one spills hot cocoa this time,” Minhyuk whispered, watching the scene unfold from the corner of his eye. The boys nodded in agreement, their gazes fixed on the innocent pair under the mistletoe. Confidence radiated off them, a sense of shared certainty that this time, no unexpected interruption would stand in the way of their long-awaited moment.

As Y/N and Hyunwoo obliviously enjoyed their conversation, the rest of the boys watched with anticipation. The festive cheer, mixed with the underlying excitement of their scheme, filled the room. Minhyuk, usually the loudest and the most vivacious among them, was unusually quiet. His eyes focused on the pair as though trying to bring them closer to the mistletoe.

With every chuckle shared and every game played, Hyunwoo and Y/N gravitated closer to the carefully chosen corner. Even though Hyunwoo was unaware of the boys’ mischief, he found himself naturally drawn towards Y/N’s warmth. The soft glow from the fairy lights cast a beautiful sheen on her face, making her seem even more enchanting.

“Okay,” Kihyun whispered, pointing towards the pair, “they are almost there. Be prepared to not make any sudden moves.” The others nodded, understanding the implicit message. They didn’t want to repeat the hot cocoa incident or any other interruption.

The mood in the room grew more intense as the pair laughed heartily at something on Y/N’s phone. They stood together and found their way to the vacant seats under the mistletoe, seemingly led by destiny and the boys’ careful orchestration.

“Finally,” breathed Minhyuk to the others, never taking his eyes off the pair. The boys shared an excited glance. Their well-laid plan had, this time, seamlessly led Hyunwoo and Y/N under the hanging mistletoe. Now, it was all up to the magic of the season.

“Hey guys,” Jooheon was the first to speak up. His grin was cheeky, dimples on full display. Jooheon had a mischievous sparkle in his eyes as he raised a finger, pointing upwards. Hyunwoo and Y/N followed the directions to find the sneaky mistletoe hanging above them. Drawn away from their world as their gaze fell onto the plant, their laughter dwindled into a soft silence. The room seemed to hold its breath as they turned to face each other, their cheeks flushed under the striking realization.

Hyunwoo was the first to break the silence, an easy laugh escaping his lips to lighten up the severity of the moment. The boys’ soft, teasing shouts encouraged him to follow the tradition, but their voices seemed distant. His focus was on Y/N, her eyes shining with surprise, and something more, something softer that made his heart skip a beat. With a shy smile, Hyunwoo leaned into her, planting a gentle kiss on her cheek. The room echoed with the collective groan of the boys.

“Hyung, that’s not how it works!” Changkyun yelled out, others chiming in with similar complaints. They wouldn’t let their leader get away that easily; their shouts were full of lighthearted taunting and genuine excitement. The festive cheer in their eyes was overwhelming, pushing Hyunwoo out of his comfort zone a little more. Y/N was surprised, but then she smiled too, a slight, fond, expectant glance towards Hyunwoo.

“You have to actually kiss her,” Jooheon challenged teasingly, his words sinking into the air with a daring promise.

Caught in the unexpected tension, Hyunwoo and Y/N stared at each other, their faces colored a charming shade of red, mirrored expressions of surprise and shyness. The outside world seemed to fade away, with nothing but their glances mattering at that moment. The boys’ playful cheering felt like a distant hum, barely reaching them in their sole focus on each other. Despite his initial hesitations, Hyunwoo couldn’t help the rising warmth in his heart, a soft smile curving his lips.

When the anticipation was unbearable, and the boys were ready to groan in disappointment, Y/N made a move that left everyone in the room speechless. Mustering her courage, she moved closer to Hyunwoo, eyes sparkling with mischief and affection. Stunned silence took over the room as Y/N reached up, gently cupping his face and pulling him closer. Hyunwoo’s breath hitched as she leaned in, her lips landing softly against his. It was a sweet, lingering moment shared between the two, symbolizing their hidden sentiments finally coming to light.

Their friends broke into hoots and cheers, joy rippling as they finally witnessed the much-awaited kiss. Their triumph amplified The festive joy and the magical atmosphere, making it a night they would all remember with fond smiles. In the midst of it all, Hyunwoo and Y/N merely laughed, their cheeks burning again, yet their hearts filled with a warmth that made the night unforgettable.

Ch. 3: Stunt

It wouldn’t be fair to say Yoongi eventually got over the love of his life publicly denying their relationship, but he’s at least not so mad and spiteful about it anymore. Despite not being ok with the decision, he took time to think it through and respect Hyeri’s decision. They made up and although he still carries a tiny bit of disappointment in the back of his mind, for the most part he’s fine with it now.

Hyeri finished her movie shoot and soon after the news was announced about her being cast in the lead role of an upcoming drama. The show was already set to be highly anticipated thanks to the All Star production team, but when it was announced that Kihyun from Monsta X was cast in the male lead role, the drama caught much more attention from Monbebes and beyond.

Yoongi is happy for her. Amidst his own upcoming comeback with BTS, he’s also found joy and excitement in her upcoming drama, even though he still has to hide when seeing her and limit their dates to late night private rendezvous in some back alley ramen shop. Aside from all of that, he’s happy for her and Kihyun, who is a friend of his going back to their high school days.

Yoongi and Hyeri still don’t see much of each other. She started shooting her drama and he’s about to embark on comeback season in

“Wooooo!!!”

All the guys cheer as their live broadcast begins after the premiere of their new music video. They’re on a set adorned with balloons and colorful banners to celebrate their comeback and the first full studio album since they all returned from military service. There’s pizza, chicken, cake, and plenty of drinks provided to them from the staff.

Hyeri watches on her phone from her dressing room during a lunch break. She promised Yoongi she’d tune in, even if for just a few seconds. He’s wearing the bracelet she gifted him as an early Christmas present. It looks like any other leather bracelet with a gold plate, but up close there’s an engraving on that gold plate.

She knows that while he’s forgiven her, he still struggles with the fact that they have to remain undercover all of the time. She bought him the bracelet to serve as a reminder that she loves him and the decisions of her company will never change that. On the small plate she had engraved “Forever mine. Forever yours.” Something they would always repeat to each other over and over again. She wanted him to wear it so he’d never forget. So he never took it off since the day she gave it to him.

She takes screenshots as much as she can because frankly she’s missed him. Them making up didn’t change their schedules so she hasn’t seen much of him since she began shooting for her new drama.

Yoongi loves the bracelet. All he has to do is glance at his wrist for a brief moment and the 15 million people watching right now will have no idea that he’s smiling about Hyeri.

As much as he loves the constant reminder dangling from his wrist, it doesn’t change the fact that time and scheduling continues to work against them. With it being the holidays, the end of the year, awards season, comeback season, and a tour soon, Yoongi is lucky to get even a few minutes with Hyeri. They have no choice but to rely on texts, short video calls, and sweet voicemails to one another. It’s less than ideal but it doesn’t get easier.

The tour begins with 2 nights at home in Seoul then they fly to the United States and travel their way back while hitting some major cities in America, a quick 2 nights in London, followed by Japan, then the finale back home in Seoul. Hyeri wasn’t able to attend either show at home due to her schedule. She was only able to spend a short two hours with Yoongi a few days before his flight out. It was less than ideal but they made the most of it as best they could.

As much as he hates to leave, he’s excited to finally go on tour again. They start in New York playing 2 sold out shows, appearing on late night talk shows, and collecting invitations from so many people for nearly every event happening while they’re in town. It’s a busy time but they still get a little free time in the middle of it. Yoongi spends that time taking pictures to send to Hyeri and looking for gifts to buy her. He’s only been to one city and he’s already gotten her a necklace with a teardrop shaped diamond pendant, a leather racer jacket that matches the style of one he has at home that she’s always taking for herself, a few plushies, and any American treats he thought she’d like.

After a week in New York, they move on to New Jersey. The routine is much of the same. Two shows, invitations to events, and Yoongi devoting his down time to Hyeri, whether it be through buying her things or getting the chance to talk to her at some ungodly hour because of the time zone difference. He’s happy to be on tour. He’s happy to be with his brothers. He’s happy to see Army. He’s happy he has his Rainbow, Hyeri.

Hyeri had been having a great time on her drama. Shooting has wrapped and they have a potential premiere date set. Now all of her shoots are promotional ones for the show. She’s happy that she’s comfortable with Kihyun so all of these shoots aren’t awkward and painful.

When she’s not working she’s sitting by her phone to wait for Yoongi’s call. She’ll send him a message telling him everything about her day. She tells him how much she loves and misses him and can’t wait to see what other goodies he bought her.

To keep his luggage light, he had been getting all of the gifts he bought her shipped. The first batch from New York arrived and she’s been excited for the next package. The only thing he didn’t have shipped was the diamond necklace he got her. That one is special and he wants to give that one to her in person when he returns home.

After New Jersey comes Boston, then Philly, followed by Toronto. Once they reach Washington DC, Yoongi is starting to feel the tour fatigue. It’s nothing he can’t handle and he’s certainly had it worse, but now he finds himself spending more time inside resting.

Thankfully they have a little extra free time in DC which is how they planned it to avoid burnout. Yoongi loves it because it gives him more time to try catching Hyeri when she’s not busy. He texts her the times he’s free and lets her know she can call at any of those times. He’s done it in every city once they have their schedules finalized. She also tells him what her schedule is, and right now he knows she’s doing a variety show shoot with her cast mates.

Unfortunately he doesn’t hear from her this morning. He assumes the shooting went long and she went home and passed out like she usually does when she’s completely exhausted. He sends her a message telling her he loves her and to have a good night. He stays in his room most of the day until he goes out to eat with Hobi for dinner.

“How are you holding up?” Hobi asks while they’re waiting for their food.

Today’s indulgence is steak and plenty of drinks. Hobi opts for a simple house cocktail while Yoongi tries a local whiskey.

“I’ve been worse,” Yoongi says taking a sip. “How about you?”

“I’m ok,” Hobi replies. “After rest I should be better.”

“How’s your hip?”

“It’ll be better.” Hobi rolls his eyes and takes a sip of his drink.

“Why are you rolling your eyes at me?” Yoongi laughs. “It’s your fault for trying to keep up with Taehyung and Jungkook.”

“The one time I run around the stage with them and I bust my ass!” Hobi pouts. “How do they do it every show?”

“Accept it, you’re getting old.”

“It’s not about how old I am, it’s about the slippery stage being a safety hazard.”

“Just leave the running to the kids,” Yoongi laughs.

Their night continues with more drinks, great food, and occasional teasing. They talk about the joy of being back on the road as well as the challenges. They vent to one another about their current annoyances, then circle back to how happy they are. They head back to their hotel rooms full, tipsy, and happy. Yoongi tried to stay awake in hopes that he would hear from Hyeri, but he didn’t last very long before he passed out with his phone on his chest.

When he wakes up the next morning he checks his phone to see a message, not from Hyeri, but from Kihyun.

[Kihyun]: Hey, I’m really sorry about everything. I don’t know if they talked to Hyeri, but they never talked to me. If I had known I would have stopped them. I just wanted to tell you before it got out of hand that I didn’t get a say in this at all.

Yoongi is confused, he has no idea what Kihyun is talking about until he clicks the link he included with his message. The link goes to a notice posted by JJS Entertainment. Yoongi begins reading fearing that something had happened to Hyeri.

Something did in fact happen, but Yoongi still isn’t sure what. All he knows is that for some reason, Hyeri’s company is confirming her relationship with his friend, her co-star, Kihyun.

“What the fuck?” Yoongi says to himself.

He goes straight to social media to look for context. It seems to be a very hot topic so it takes no time at all for him to be bombarded with a photo of Hyeri out with Kihyun. It’s nowhere near as damning as the photo of Yoongi and Hyeri that her company denied were indicative of a romantic relationship. There’s no hand holding or gazing into each others eyes. It just appears to be them out for lunch or something.

He can’t help but wonder why the hell JJS is confirming this relationship even though they wanted to deny the relationship that was actually real. On top of that, he wants to know why he’s hearing this from Kihyun but not his girlfriend who he hasn’t heard from in over a day.

“What the fuck?” He repeats.

[Yoongi]: It’s ok, I know it’s nothing. Thanks for reaching out.

After replying to Kihyun, Yoongi goes back and forth in his mind on what he should say to Hyeri. He could text her as if nothing happened and see what she says, but she’s already gone a day without answering his messages. Now he thinks he knows why.

If there’s truly nothing going on, then why hasn’t she said anything to him? She didn’t even try to respond by pretending nothing was wrong. She just remained silent as if he had done something to upset her. He took a moment to think and he can’t come up with any reason why she would suddenly be mad at him.

So what is this? Is this her way of breaking up? She had every reason to justify JJS denying their relationship, but she didn’t seem to have a problem with them confirming a fake relationship. If she did have a problem he would have heard from her. She may have a hard time standing up for herself, but she’d always go to Yoongi and vent her frustrations. At the very least she would have sent him a text. Instead he’s gotten nothing.

He can’t help but think she’s trying to distance herself. None of this makes sense to him. He starts to question everything about their relationship. The sight of the gifts he was getting ready to package and send to her infuriates him.

The next concert is the following night. When Yoongi arrives for rehearsal in the morning everyone isn’t sure what to say to him.

Jungkook caught wind of the notice JJS put out about Hyeri and Kihyun while he was scrolling TikTok. He brushed it off as a fake, thinking the poster just photoshopped something to look like they were confirming the relationship. But then he saw it again, and once again. Wanting to disprove it for his own sake, he did a quick online search and found out the truth.

Jungkook told Jin, who then told Namjoon. After some thought, Namjoon called a secret meeting to let everyone know and to try their best to not mention it or do anything that would upset Yoongi. Not just because he’d be unfocused during their show, but because they all know how much Yoongi loves Hyeri. They know he’s already crushed, they can’t stand to see him hurt more.

Jin is able to break through the initial awkwardness and tension to keep the mood light. Yoongi struggles at first, but with Jin’s amazing ability to get a laugh out of him no matter what and the rest of the guys doing everything to keep spirits high, he started to feel a little better as the day went on. Actually he doesn’t feel better, but he’s at least ok enough to fake it well.

Before the concert he has his usual drink before going on stage. Tonight he decided to have two drinks. Just a little extra to get him through the night. Enough to make him feel good enough to forget that he still hasn’t heard a thing from Hyeri.

When he steps on stage the sound of the crowd instantly breaks through his fog. The sea of Army bombs fuels him. After the first few songs he starts feeling lighter. Maybe a little too light. So light that he doesn’t care about anything anymore.

During the first intermission he has a quick shot of whiskey. The smoky taste feels so satisfying in this moment. If she doesn’t care enough to speak to him then why should he spend the entire concert stuck in his head thinking about her? That’s not fair to the fans and not fair to his members. So when the second intermission comes he slams another drink. He feels amazing.

Yoongi wasn’t trying to be sneaky, but he still managed to go unnoticed every time he had a drink. Almost. Everyone knows he likes to have a drink before a show and the occasional intermission drink so it’s nothing to them. However, Jimin happened to be the only one to notice just how much Yoongi has had.

Jimin noticed Yoongi having two drinks before the show instead of one. He didn’t think much of it considering the current situation with Hyeri. The shot of whiskey during the intermission was a little unusual to Jimin since he knows Yoongi typically likes to sip his whiskey if he’s going to drink it straight, but again Jimin let it slide. By the time they made it to their encore stage, Jimin counted a total of 6 drinks and he can’t be sure that there’s not more. He doesn’t want to cause alarm so he doesn’t bring it up, but he still wants to keep an eye on Yoongi.

When they get back to the hotel Yoongi has another drink and throws himself on his bed. He feels great after the show. He feels terrible. He can’t feel much at all. Until his phone goes off and he sees a call coming in from Hyeri.

He doesn’t want to answer. She waited this long to try talking to him, why should he answer now? He’s drunk so of course he answers. He needs answers regardless of how upset with her his is. He picks up and only sighs into the phone.

“Yoongi?” Hyeri says softly.

“Hyeri,” he replies emotionless.

“Kihyun told me he talked to you.”

“Oh really? What else did Kihyun say?” He asks with sass.

“Please listen before you start getting mad.”

“Before I start getting mad??” He shouts. “You haven’t said shit to me in 2 days, I’m past fucking mad Hyeri!”

“I know, I’m sorry. I didn’t want any of this. I thought they would deny everything like before but they wanted to go with it to gain more publicity for the show.”

“And let me guess, you just went with it without trying to stop them?”

“Baby, you know I don’t have much say here.”

“Don’t you baby me!” He growls. “For two days I waited for you to say something. Do you know how much it fucking hurts to hear this shit from my friend before I hear it from you? And then you still didn’t try to say shit to me until now! What the fuck Hyeri?!”

“I knew you would be busy. I didn’t want to take your attention off the tour. I thought since you didn’t say anything about it yet that maybe you hadn’t seen anything. I just wanted you to focus on what you guys have going on.”

“Fuck off, Hyeri,” he huffs. “You weren’t thinking of me at all! If you were you would have told me from the start! But I guess you’d rather be in a relationship with anyone other than me right? Don’t tell the world we’re together but sure let them believe a lie because you don’t give a shit about me!!”

“Yoongi that’s not it!” She cries. “This wasn’t easy for me at all. You know I love you more than anything.”

“You have a fucked up way of showing it.”

“Baby-“

“I said don’t baby me! I forgave you for letting them deny our relationship. I fucking hated it and you know I did, but I still forgave you. Did you really think you could turn around and do this shit and expect me to forgive you again? Do you think I’m some sort of fool?”

“Yoon-“

“If you don’t want to be with me just fucking say that!” He’s drunk and pissed and steaming from the ears.

“That’s not it!” She crying more and frustrated that he’s not willing to hear her out. “There’s nothing between me and Kihyun.”

“Kihyun isn’t the problem!” He roars. “For some reason you think I’m a fucking pet who will take everything you say at face value and let you keep walking over me. Fuck that, Na Hyeri! I’m not your fucking toy! If you want to leave then fucking leave! You can take all of your shit and go be with whoever the fuck you want to be with since clearly it’s not me.” His anger has started to manifest into tears and he’s struggling to keep from breaking down entirely.

“Yoongi,” she cries almost inconsolably. “I do want to be with you. I’m still going to be here waiting for you when you get home. None of that will change. It’s just for the show.” She’s down on her knees now. He can’t see her, but she’s pleading to him with everything she has. “None of these publicity stunts and shit mean anything. When the show airs that’ll be the end of it. Please believe me, Yoongi. You are my everything.”

Hearing her cry sends a sharp pain through his chest. His instant reaction is always to comfort her when she’s crying, but right now it only pisses him off more. He’s pissed that he loves her so much. He’s pissed that he’s feeling this wave of emotions because of her. He’s pissed at her for putting him through this in the first place. He’s even more pissed at himself because what good is loving someone when it hurts like this? He hates that he has a heart.

“Your package from Philly came today,” she says softly after a moment of no response from him. “Thank you.”

“It’s late here and I’m tired from the show,” He says dryly. “I’m going to bed. Whether you’re still there when I return or not is up to you. I’m just letting you know I won’t be your stupid little pet.”

“Yoongi-“

[Call ended]

Yoongi sighs then gets up for another drink. He knows he’s had more than enough already but that call made him sober up more than he wanted to. He takes a second shot then tosses himself back on the bed.

“Fuck!” He shouts finally letting his tears fall. He grabs on to his pillow and begins sobbing. He’s in so much pain, more than he’s ever felt before. He lays there and cries himself to sleep wishing he’d wake up as someone else. Someone who isn’t so deeply in love.
