So the leak that was causing my bathroom troubles was actually coming from my upstairs neighbor’s neighbor which I guess makes sense since we share a corner below them and all of the bathrooms are in the same column. The bad news is that while neighbor’s owner is easy to get in contact with and has, like us, replaced the unit’s pipes, neither of us can get ahold of neighbor-neighbor’s owner to be able to slap them with the bill or to gently persuade them to also get their pipes replaced. The HOA can’t legally order any owner to get the pipes replaced, unfortunately. If nothing happens, I guess my only solution is to persuade them, what the government calls, “Godfather Style.”

HOAs sound so good on paper but are such a shit show in practice. Like, they're supposed to stop people from, I don't know, parking broken down cars in the front yard (which I still think is a fine thing to do. If Billy says he's gonna fix up his T-bird let 'em. May take 3 years but that's Billy's problem). Instead of 'protecting home values' you get the most entitled, self important chuckle fucks stomping their feet and making up bullshit rules.
Before we moved, a neighbor was voted onto the board. I knew this man from my brother's cub scout days. He was that flavor of loser that if his kid didn't earn a patch or come in first or second in something. He'd throw a royal hissy until the troop decided to just give EVERYONE a patch/merit for participating. He was also that parent the for things like the wooden car derby or DIY boat race would VERY OBVIOUSLY make his son's for him.
HOAs, if they ever had a redeeming purpose, have been run into the ground by spoiled brats. Brats who think they have any authority to tell you what to do on your land. Never mind you pay your mortgage, you pay your taxes, you pay for the upkeep, etc. Karen and Ken down the road decided they don't like your clothes line. So now you get a fun new threatening letter from the management company the HOA hired. Ya know, the one that NEVER ANSWERS THE PHONE!
HOAs sound awful, how do people deal with strangers telling them what color to paint their house and shit I would start throwing rocks

HOAs are the kind of thing that has like, a handful of benefits and so many issues. From my experience with them, they’re supposed to do stuff like take care of lawn maintenance/landscaping stuff and other general appearance things and give people in the development space and power to get things done for the community.
What that could be, ideally, is that the HOA handles keeping the pool and playground clean and helps cover stuff like, say, replacing your fence and front yard tree that got demolished by a hurricane. If lots of residents start reporting problems with something, they can coordinate a solution.
What it ends up being 9 times out of 10 is a bunch of nosy busybodies regulating what color curtains you can have so the neighborhood looks dull conformist cookiecutter “unified” and pitching a fit when someone puts an unapproved flag up.
honestly it’s like having aesthetic police - they’re not actually helpful or good most of the time, but people think they do good things enough to ignore the stupid crap they pull. and they probably hate anyone who doesn’t fit in iykwim
Every post I make about lawns leads me back to the reality that the problem is Homeowners' Associations, so I am trying to research Homeowner's Associations (I don't know what they are exactly), and as far as I can tell they are some type of lawn mafia (?)
This website which has "HOA: Everything you need to know" provides this information:
you pay money to them every month
the money sometimes (?) is used to maintain a pool or something that you can swim in
they make up rules for things you can't do in your own house or yard
if you break the rules, they make you pay more money, sue you, or kick you out of your house
People sign a contract that lets the Homeowner's Association control their lives for the reason that they might get to swim in the pool and because of a persistent rumor that HOAs increase "Property Values" (?) although the website says "The data is mixed on whether that's true or not"
This is one of those things where it seems like we would have remembered to make it illegal by now. I live in my house and some stinky punk tries to tell me that I can't paint it a color- the very boards of the side of my house. If I continue, said putrescent busybody then removes me bodily from my home for painting the wall that I bought and legally own, rendering me homeless. This seems to run contrary to many rights and freedoms a citizen is assumed to possess

Why San Antonio HOAs Choose to Outsource Management
At HOA Management Services, we've helped many San Antonio communities make the switch to outsourced management. If you're wondering why HOAs decide to outsource, we'd like to share some of the main reasons we've seen.
Tumblr media
One big reason HOAs choose to outsource is to save time. Running an HOA involves a lot of work, from collecting dues to organizing meetings and handling maintenance issues. These tasks can be overwhelming for volunteer board members who have their own jobs and families. By outsourcing, board members can focus on making important decisions for the community instead of getting bogged down in day-to-day tasks.
Another key benefit of outsourcing is access to expert knowledge. HOA management companies have teams with specialized skills in areas like accounting, property maintenance, and HOA laws. This expertise can help your community avoid costly mistakes and run more efficiently. We stay up-to-date on changes in regulations and best practices so your HOA doesn't have to.
Many HOAs find that outsourcing can lead to cost savings over time. While there is a fee for management services, a good company can often find ways to reduce expenses through better vendor management and more efficient operations. We have relationships with trusted service providers in San Antonio, which can result in better rates for your community.
Many San Antonio HOAs find that outsourcing helps with rule enforcement. It can be uncomfortable for board members to confront their neighbors about violations. A management company can handle these situations professionally and consistently, which helps maintain community standards without straining personal relationships.
Finally, outsourcing can provide peace of mind. Knowing that experienced professionals are overseeing the daily operations of your community can reduce stress for board members and homeowners alike. We handle the details so you can enjoy living in your community.
If you're considering outsourcing HOA management in San Antonio, we're here at: https://hoamanagementsanantonio.com to discuss how it could benefit your specific community. Every HOA is unique, and we can work with you to find the right level of service to meet your needs. Let's talk about how outsourcing could help make your community an even better place to live.

Updating HOA Rules: Making Changes to Bylaws, Covenants, and Regulations
In any homeowners association (HOA), periodically updating rules and regulations is crucial to reflect the evolving needs and preferences of the community. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to make changes to HOA community management bylaws, covenants, and regulations:
Assessing Current Regulations:
Review existing bylaws, covenants, and rules to identify areas that require updates.
Consider feedback from residents regarding issues or concerns with current regulations.
Evaluate the effectiveness and relevance of existing rules in maintaining the community's standards.
Establishing a Task Force or Committee:
Form a dedicated task force or committee comprised of HOA board members and community residents.
Ensure diversity within the group to represent various perspectives and interests within the community.
Assign specific roles and responsibilities to members, such as research, drafting proposals, and gathering feedback.
Research and Proposal Development:
Conduct thorough research on relevant laws, regulations, and best practices applicable to HOAs.
Identify areas for improvement or modification based on the community's needs and legal requirements.
Develop clear and concise proposals for amendments to the bylaws, covenants, or regulations.
Communicating with Homeowners:
Inform residents about the proposed changes through multiple channels, such as newsletters, emails, or community meetings.
Provide detailed explanations of the reasons behind each proposed amendment and how it may impact residents.
Encourage homeowners to offer feedback, suggestions, and concerns regarding the proposed changes.
Tumblr media
Gathering Input and Feedback:
Host town hall meetings or forums to facilitate discussions and gather input from homeowners.
Create online surveys or feedback forms to allow residents to express their opinions anonymously.
Consider organizing focus groups or workshops to delve deeper into specific topics or concerns raised by residents.
Revision and Refinement:
Review all feedback and suggestions received from homeowners and incorporate relevant input into the proposed amendments.
Revise draft proposals as necessary to address concerns raised by residents while ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
Seek input from legal counsel or experts to ensure the proposed changes adhere to state laws and regulations.
Voting and Approval Process:
Present the finalized amendments to the HOA board for review and approval.
Schedule a formal vote among homeowners to ratify the proposed changes, adhering to the procedures outlined in the HOA's governing documents.
Ensure transparency throughout the voting process and provide opportunities for residents to ask questions or seek clarification.
Implementing Changes:
Communicate the outcome of the vote to residents, including the results and any next steps.
Update official HOA documents, including bylaws, covenants, and regulations, to reflect the approved changes.
Educate homeowners about the revised rules and regulations through informational materials, community meetings, or workshops.
Enforcement and Compliance:
Ensure consistent enforcement of the updated rules and regulations to maintain the integrity of the community standards.
Provide clear guidelines and consequences for violations of the amended bylaws, covenants, or rules.
Offer support and resources to help homeowners understand and comply with the revised regulations.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
Regularly review and assess the effectiveness of the updated rules and regulations in achieving their intended goals.
Solicit feedback from residents on the impact of the changes and identify any areas that may require further adjustment.
Remain open to future revisions and amendments as the needs and dynamics of the community evolve over time.
By following these steps and fostering open communication and collaboration with homeowners, HOAs can successfully navigate the process of updating bylaws, covenants, and regulations to better serve the interests of the community.
