#hm I have a trope list about condescending caretaker somewhere buried in my drafts...

Thoughts on whumpee with an attitude,,? I feel like theres a lot of whumpees who need to be cared for and are whiny and stuff which is cool when done right but its fun to write/read ab whumpees w an attitude. Whumpees who like are fearful to some extent but aren’t super broken up ALL of the time. One that ends up more self confident in what they do/don’t want after whumper instead of only looking to caretaker for support/guidance to build them back up.
Like a whumpee who’s been drugged denying painkillers bc they actually can take the pain and don’t like the resurfacing memories + a caretaker thats overbearing
“I’m not taking that”
“You need to”
“Or else what? Are u going to shove it down my throat?? like whumper did?”
“I didn’t kn-“
“I don’t care?? Not taking those, I think I know my pain threshold by now thanks”
I kinda like caretakers realizing that they’re super condescending and that whumpee as a person has changed, like maybz they’re physically weak but enduring their torture made them mentally stronger despite everything
“You can’t lift that”
“You need to rest”
“You’re going to burn out, you slow down”
Vs
they literally can and do it to make a point while clearly aggravated
“I’ve stayed awake for far longer and YOU weren’t there, what I “need” is to be left alone.” (Nice angst if they feel guilty ab being a dick but don’t know how else to express caretaker is denying them autonomy/treating them like a child)
“I don’t need you telling me how my body works. But thanks for the bandages. [other younger character] is around if you want to play nurse.”
Idk im not a dialogue girly/good writer but when authors do this right its sm fun and very angsty. Cuz i’d personally be so insulted if i went thru weeks of torture for somebody to act like Idk wtf I got going on/im too stupid to not overexert myself 😭
Srry for the long ask omg you don’t have to answer if its too overwhelming
I do love Whumpees with an attitude, but to be quite honest, not towards Caretaker ^^" Mentally stronger doesn't mean headstrong. There's a fine line between attitude, confidence and being a dick. But, same goes for Caretaker; there's a line between worried and condescending. Me, I like those things in the middle. Whumpees who are self-sufficient but need some help and someone to call them out every now and then. (Or not and they collapse because angst >:3 )
