—Ivan Demidov, future Montreal Canadiens 5th Overall pick, explains in his draft interview that he already knows who Slaf is because they played against each other in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup Final, Slovakia vs. Russia, August 7, 2021, when Slaf was 17 and Demidov was 15 (and the youngest on his team).
Slaf wore #8 for Team Slovakia and obtained 9 points (3G, 6A) in 5 games. Demidov wore #18 for Team Russia and ended the tournament with 5 points (2G, 3A). Slaf's childhood friend and current Montreal prospect Filip Mešár also played for Team Slovakia (#10).
Bonus: Here are a few moments of the future Habs teammates' face-off.

And while, as Ivan said, "He lose" (7-2, yikes!) thanks in large part to Russia's solid goaltending, Juraj and Filip made some great plays and Slovakia made it to the podium for the first time since their bronze medal victory in 1998, walking away with their first silver medal in this tournament. Slaf's buddy, captain Šimon Nemec (#7 in this tournament + future NJD), brings the team their trophy:

9/08/2024 - SWE vs CZE - Hlinka Gretzky Cup Semi-Final #1
Adam Benák dishes through traffic over the goalie's pads -> Vít Záhejský scores a goal for team Czechia.
[ID: a series of gifs. Team Czechia vs Team Sweden in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup 2024. Czechia is on the power play. Adam Benák (CZE #17) stands on the goal line down low and handles the puck several times. Malte Vass (SWE #6) stands guard in front of the crease with his stick ready to intercept a pass. Love Härenstam (SWE #30) seals the post, expecting a shot. Benák passes the puck with force, lifting it over Härenstam's pad and sending it across the crease to Vít Záhejský (CZE #8). Vít Záhejský wastes no time, shooting the puck at the net blocker-side. Team Czechia scores a goal. /. End ID]

every active first overall pick | 2020, alexis lafreniere
Selected first overall in the QMJHL entry draft, Alexis Lafreniere scored the most goals by a rookie since his Rimouski Oceanic predecessor Sidney Crosby. He has represented Canada on the international stage five times, including gold at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where he served as captain, and the 2020 World Juniors, where he won tournament MVP. He is the youngest NHL player to score their first goal in overtime, and one of only two teenagers to do so.

hello hi there howdy HOW are we surviving this offseason and why does it feel like an eternity until hockey returns (the hlinka gretzky cup is literally on right now)
- 🎨
Hello CCA :)
I got your ask about Holtzy, wasn't ignoring you, by the way! just am waiting to answer that for when I post your gift fic, which I'm trying to do before the teams start coming back for training camp.
It will happen. I promise. I'm so excited to write it. The premise is something I think will be fun and I've been thinking about it nonstop.
I have baseball during the offseason, so that's been a rollercoaster, oh the Mets, and now the Olympics.
And some of the off season content has kept me fed as it tends to do.
I just need my boys back tho. I need to know Jack's good to go, Timo's good to go. I need to see gentle giant Dougie back on the ice. I need BFF Curtis razzing the Hugheses. I need Noesy lightly bullying Jesp and Nico. I need to see how quickly the new guys get themselves into the fold.
What will Chief Keefe do with the lines?! The D Pairs?! The PP units?! The PK pairs?!
And. Can Dawson Mercer sign his fucking contract already. Sheesh.
It should be ramping up now that we're well into August methinks. I think the NHL Europe media stuff happens this month. Rookies training camp is less than a month away I believe. And soon the boys will start making their back to Jersey. Maybe Nico will remember his Instagram password one more time and gift us with not only his annual summer recap post, but also another sponsored Swiss Air post.
I miss hockey so much. Just stay healthy boys, please.
How about you, CCA? How are you holding up in this drought?
we are Kevin Rooney days away from New Jersey Devils Regular Season Hockey

I love finding random hockey connections but have no one to yap about them to so tumblr you shall become subjected to my yapping
Zach Benson and Connor Bedard: isn’t it so sweet that kids that used to have sleepovers with each other are now in the NHL together? They were both on the Vancouver Viper AAA team together, got drafted to the WHL (2020) and got drafted to the NHL (2023) in the same year (Andrew Cristall is also apart of this but i don’t know enough about that man to comment)
Olen Zellweger and Connor Bedard: they played on team Canada WJC in 2022/3 and played on team Canada again in 2024. And Zelly has one of the best bodies connor has ever seen
Matt Rempe and Kevin Korchinski: teammates on the Seattle Thunderbirds, Kevin even got his first WHL point on a Rempe goal. Kevin’s comments of Rempe’s post are always entertaining, and Rempe commenting under Korch’s Insta, “little kev” has well and truely changed my brain chemistry. (Also there names are next to each other on the alumni wall this doesn’t mean anything but that doesn’t mean it’s any less entertaining to me)
Jack Quinn and Brandt Clarke: I actually have nothing for this one other than Jack Quinn was at Brandt Clarkes draft party (to anyone who knows more please do tell ☺️🤲)
Jeff Skinner and Elias Lindholm: this one isn’t far reaching as the other as they were both drafted my Carolina but the photos of them together are so fun and *that* one photo, masterful
Clayton Keller and Auston Matthews: they are actually friends. IN FACT!! They have a shared Spotify playlist. Like I know they’re friends, they were in the UNSTPD together, Matthews’ literally said he would pick Keller to compete on team USA together but them having a shared Spotify playlist caught me off guard 💀
Shane Wright, Brandt Clarke and Brennan Othmann: DON MILLS FLYERS BOYS!!! Anyways I am fragile and these boys deserve the world. More info ig they played on Canada U18 team together in 2021 and WJC 2023 together (“there last go around” as Shane said) also Shane and Brendan share the same birthday (Jan 5th)
Elias Petterson and Rasmus Dahlin: teammates in 2018 for WJC team Sweden, and also this article (this one I swear made me half insane because I couldn’t find anything, but say it with me, “I’m not finding friendships, I’m finding connections.”)
Dylan Strome and Clayton Keller: I know this isn’t far stretching but idc whenever is see the yotes tweet from 2017 calling them the present and the future I get emotional
Alex Turcotte, Jordan Spence, Quinton Byfield and Alex Laferriere: again not far fetched as they are on the kings together (listen, when turcotte stops getting injured I can die happy) but tbh I just need people to know about these 4 because they’re iconic
JJ Peterka and Tim Stützle: team Germany teammates in 2020 and played on the same line, and the story in 2020 was that they lead Germany to first ever playoffs
Mark Stone and Peyton Krebs: I would just like to remind you that Krebs lived with mark stone and they got to Vegas the same year (2019) Krebs was his rookie
Dylan Holloway and Peyton Krebs: played together at the 2018 Hlinka-Gretzky cup. They were billeted in 2017-20 (dates a bit iffy). And Krebs said, “he’s [Holloway] pretty much a brother now.” Like 😭
Logan Cooley and Cutter Gauthier: I love crumbs if you can’t tell. Teammates at WJC 2023 (team USA), and this photo and this one (boys… stop being antisocial)

I COULDNT AGREE MORE. The Adam characterizations are ridiculous. They're so off. No one is shitting on him
THANK YOU ANON
like yes realistically he is not used nearly as effectively as he could be by the coaches and is being scapegoated, i don’t think the team is actively shitting on him?
like i *know* how brandt clarke speaks. sometimes he doesn’t have a brain to mouth filter and blurts out random shit. he didn’t mean what he said about playing cute to hurt either connor or adam. same as shane today saying they were playing too cute. i really don’t think anyone on the team hates him, especially not guys like brennan and connor and shane and brandt who have grown up with him. i really don’t buy the “woe is me everyone on the team hates me and i miss luca” narrative. i think that yes, maybe he’s not having a great time and he does miss his brother, but maybe it’s just the expectation of international competition. he was just like this at u18s too, it’s not surprising to anyone who did any research on that.
i also hate how people are blaming it on the whole “canadian vs american development style and media attention” thing. BIG newsflash for everyone, very few people in canada actually care about the chl and most of their franchises are located in smaller cities to try to promote the sport in those places. really, the only widely covered events are the wjc, hlinka gretzky, and mem cup. that’s it. no one even gives a shit about u18s because most of the players are busy in mem cup runs. the billet thing is also a mute point because literally the ntdp is the same. it makes SENSE that a team that is cultivated for 2 years together basically spending 24/7 with one another is going to have more camaraderie and be more loose with each other. people don’t care enough about chl teams to pay deep attention to them like the umich team or the ntdp because simply most franchises do not have the money to promote their players as much as the colleges and national program do. maybe if anyone actually took a look, they’d realize that yeah they’re pretty alright too. only thing that comes close right now is the steelheads socials.
so like fuck off about the idea that adam only suffers in canada cause all the media is on him and he can’t handle the pressure and blah blah blah. adam played in the noted hockey ignoring city of chicago. he’s used to the pressure.
yes tsn wasn’t kind to him, but deservedly so. he just hasn’t played well. i wish they would use him better but they haven’t and there’s nothing i can do about that. tsn has barely mentioned him as the tournament has gone on too.
still, NO ONE IS SHITTING ON HIM
anyways sorry anon this kinda went on like a tangent, but i’m mad about the adam characterization as a whole. tune in next time for when i tell people it’s absolutely idiotic to think that luca is the only reason adam didn’t stay in toronto!

5/08/2023 - Berkly Catton captains Team Canada to gold at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, leading the tournament with 8 goals and 2 assists in 10 games || 19/01/2024 Meet the Future - Berkly Catton named Team White's captain for the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game || 5/07/2024 - Berkly Catton signs his ELC with the Seattle Kraken
Introduction, quotes/transcripts/bits and pieces under the cut!
I can't even begin to describe how jazzed I am that Berkly Catton got drafted to a team I already love. I wrote in my Sharks off-season roundup that I was hoping against hope Catton would drop to 14th overall (back before we had moved up to 11th) and the Sharks would snap him up, as unlikely as it was that they'd try to gather more firepower when we sorely needed defensive prospects. I'm so glad I got my wish one way or another <3
Krakenblr you will LOVE this dude. He's such a star. Such a character. Berkly Catton is so, SO fun to watch. You have no idea!!! I followed him in the months leading up to the draft because there was buzz that he might be available lower down because of the Height Issue (he is, tragically, 5'11 <- which makes him undraftable unfortch) + concerns with how his game will translate to the NHL level. He is an electrifying playmaker. He's so creative, throws in so many fakes, WILL break ankles, very good hands... ough <3 everything I personally love to see in a forward all rolled into one neat little package !!!
There's the suggestion that he's been "over-scouted," which really just means they've all been watching him so long they're probably overthinking things and looking for stuff to critique. I'm inclined to believe this take over the other one because I'm an optimist and he was one of my little guys going into the draft! I won't include more of that here, but there's plenty of material out there if you'd like to look for it.
Below are some of my favourite bits and pieces from media he's appeared in <3
“I don’t like to give it away (pause) but I look at guys before games,” Catton revealed. “What’s weird is going from midget to junior hockey is a big jump. Last year I was learning. This year I wanted to add stuff. My pregame stuff and to look at guys doing draws and seeing what works. That’s pre-scouting on my end. If a guy has a certain move, and you can trump it early, it gets in his head a little bit. That helped quite a bit.”
“I think I sometimes have a problem with passing the puck too much. I love seeing my teammates score and setting up for an open net. It’s one of my favourite things in hockey, if not my favourite,” Catton admitted. “That’s something I can work on. When I get a chance put it home kind of thing. I got better this year at it’s still something I’d like to improve. Honestly, I’m a pass first mentality guy I would say.”
- Berkly Catton’s video scouting has improved his overall game
You know, when I first read and saved this article I was like; this prospect who reviews VIDEO is gonna haunt me. That's my weakness btw, I'm freak4freak. If you tell me a hockey player is also deeply infatuated with the game to the point of reviewing tape in their free time that's IT for me. it's JOEVER. i have a type and i know it <3 also wowie a pass-first guy who gets really really happy when his teammates score??? crying. crying. Berkly Catton . tucking uou gently away <3 forever <3
From A Day in the Life: Berkly Catton & Conner Roulette
Fave movie is The Notebook (<- unrelated there's a . really funny comment on this video from a philly fan lamenting that Catton likes the Notebook - I assume because that's some uhhh how do the kids call it,, femme soyboy shit? lmao anyway stay LOSING toxic masculinity !!!)
The boys call him 'Berk' <3
He talks about Jack Hughes being a big influence on him (in other media, he gives Hughes as a player comp!) and going to hang out and work with the Hughes family in Michigan. I sense a thread of admiration here like it's such a sweet little crush LOL <3 I hope he notices you Berkly !!
he gives the player of the match hat to a coach/trainer (one of the two) it's lovely... ouhhh... good little fella so polite and so conscious of staff being the foundation of his success... mwah!!
From Berkly Catton Talks Hockey Sense, His Start In Hockey & More | Game Tape With Tony
His father and grandfather built him a rink in his backyard, very sweet.
1OA in the WHL draft!
Anime main character levels of training-arc... my guy shot thousands of pucks over the summer in his backyard and then came back suddenly able to score goals. <- this is where the DIY goalie made of wood and blocker pads comes in. lol. lmao. are u even real.
sorry. sorry. OLEN ZELLWEGER MENTION. <- one of my personal favourite little guys (undersized puck moving defensemen my BELOVED) "Kind of a funny story [...] I pretty much had a breakaway, when he just turned backwards and played it as a 1-on-1 somehow, and I was like 'wow, this guy's the real deal', so." I really liked how Catton easily recalled a specific person/moment when asked who challenged him the most in the WHL; I think it speaks to a thoughtfulness about the game - it would've been easy to just give a vague Oh Everyone Is Good answer here and I like that he didn't!
There's a section where he talks about how he got so good at stick lifting, such an interesting perspective I never considered - he played in situations and against people where he couldn't just throw his body around to win, so he had to learn to get the puck in other ways. KEVIN KORCHINSKI MENTION <- another one of my little guys <3
mentions his dad being a big influence on his 'patience'. parents are so funny to me. ur watching your sons juniors matches? and Ohhhhh Chris Catton was a hockey player too . it all makes sense. Berkly Catton product of jockdad like so many before him <3
I do love that throughout this interview, Catton defers to his linemates a lot. Always hyping them up and talking about how he owes his success to them. it could be construed as false humility, given Catton was the highest scoring draft-eligible in the league - but he really does go out of his way to emphasise how highly he regards them and how much of their on-ice success is owed to good chemistry built up over the entire season. It strikes me as genuine!! He's a good boy <3
Revealed he can solve a rubix cube at the end... wow... he just liek me fr...
PLEASE watch this on-ice interview where he's chatting after a game and then gets ABSOLUTELY WASTED by 5 water bottles and all the boys. he is clearly so so so beloved in that locker room waaaahhh <3
Anyway this isn't an exhaustive list but it IS a lot of the reasons why I really liked him pre-draft. welcome to the deep Berkly <3
