SAO feels like a setting that could flick between different protagonists and stories very easily rather than just holding to one.

Like, SAO/Aincrad happens, but Asuna doesn't remain in a coma, happy ending rah rah rah. But then where does the next story come from?

Easy, you follow a different Black Swordsman, this precious bean!

Kuro!

IE, an SAO survivor who took to Alfheim and modelled her avatar on that of Kirito's due to his reputation and a cornucopia of her own issues.

Kuro has so many issues, I love her.

Her motives for getting into the game could be the same as canon or different, but in this case she'd end up stumbling on a conspiracy tied to the missing 100. She might connect with some other former SAO players, either one's we know or don't or existing in-between; or only local Alfheim players.

There's plenty of room, though I'd say a mix of both would be ideal, especially given her history.

Spoilers ahead:

Kuro's trauma initially just seems rooted in a lack of self worth and self sacrificial tendencies born of seeing her much more skilled fried die saving her in SAO.

But there's another layer to it, namely, Kuro was a forced recruit of Laughing Coffin. She & a different friend would be made to take turns scouting out towns for targets & fetching supplies. Her friend went Roman so to speak, while Kuro just wanted to survive, but she still blames herself for the deaths caused. Made worse by the fact that, after the Laughing Coffin was taken down, she was tracked down by an escapee and that's why her friend died.

Suffice to say, lots of drama, especially if said friend & killer stalked her into the game under a new face. Plus a sort of in universe sense of redemption arc born of saving those people. Maybe her friends a ghost in the machine, meeting people who know or figure out her past, while others are told and so on. Lots to do!

Plus she can have a fight with Kirito in the epilogue.

I just think it would be neat, & then for Gun Gale Sinon's the full MC.

Though the city had been full restored back all the way in July, it seemed like there were still a few buildings here and there that were left to rot. Ruined buildings, never to be fixed because it was simply too much work for places that wouldn’t get any visitors or monetary value at all. 

Perhaps it was by chance, perhaps it was because Monika was simply drawn to these kinds of creepy and scary places, but the young girl found herself exploring the ruins with a smile on her face, a spring in her step and a soft hum. There was something always magical and mysterious about these kinds of places, left to stand the test of times, to allow themselves to once again be claimed by the forces of nature. It really was worth the time to explore!

Truthfully, she had expected to be the only one there, but as she round the corner, she had almost bumped into someone. A quick hand to her chest, and Monika let out an embarrassed laugh.

     “-- Oh! Gosh, you gave me quite the spook there! Sorry      about that, I hope I didn’t freak you out as well!”

Finally, somewhere that wasn’t completely awful. 

She’d heard mention of a forest but that was far outside the city and honestly she had no idea how to get there. And even if she could then she was far too afraid to simply go wandering off with zero real destination in mind with no supplies.

Yes, it was far easier to do said wandering in the city and just be miserable. 

Beyond being not completely awful; she actually liked this field of flowers. Filotimo? Savior’s Respite. The flowers reminded her of the forest, her home, and the city seemed so far away here. So far away she could almost forget about it. That was until she saw someone else here. Someone out flower picking.

Oh great. Well, she didn’t want to leave. 

“Be careful how you pick them...”

...What!

Why had she said anything?! Immediately she tucked her knees up to her chest and tried to hide away in her ridiculous amount of hair. Hoping vainly that both it and her hat would render her somehow invisible.
