American financier John Jacob Astor IV's 14k gold Waltham pocket watch, recovered from his body after the Titanic sank, sold for a record total of nearly $1.5 million Saturday at Henry Aldridge & Son, Ltd., making it the most expensive piece of Titanic memorabilia.

It is said that Mr. Astor, one of many tragic heroes of the incident, helped his pregnant wife into a lifeboat, tossed her his gloves, lit a cigarette and wished her farewell.
