Dead languages and maybe Wei Ying is long-lost royalty

Today I had a discussion with @pakhnokh​ regarding why Wei Wuxian didn’t know the deeper layer of meaning behind the Lan forehead band. It was a long discussion on Twitter, so I figured I should just make a post here and leave this information out for anyone who might find it useful. 

To start off: The reason why Wei Ying didn't know the deeper layer of meaning of the Lan forehead band was in the book. But it was written in a very opaque way, in one single throw-away line. In the book, when Wei Ying had to copy the Lan rules, he specifically complained that the rules were written in seal script. 

The Useless Ye Olde’ Script

Seal script is a script that predated traditional Mandarin. It was infamous for being needlessly complex and having dozens, if not hundreds different dialects and writing methods. Some forms of seal script were entirely different languages altogether. When Qin Shi Huang united ancient China, he burned a lot of books and forced people to adopt a standard way to write, thus cementing traditional Mandarin as a singular language that is still used today, 2000 years after. A way to visualize how complex seal script was, is that there were 22 different ways to write the word 'sword'.

That is how mind-bogglingly complex it was. And worse, it was the source of much conflict in ancient times. To explain it simply, it was supposed to be one language. But if people could not even agree on how to write the same word, then how could they agree on more important things and cease warring against each other? 

Language standardization was one of Qin Shi Huang’s greatest achievements, if not the greatest, as it laid the foundation for more peace and eventual unification in later dynasties. 

This topic was made into an Academy Award-nominated movie, Hero by Zhang Yimou in 2002. 

(the word ‘sword’ that Qin Shi Huang decided on, thus wiping out the other 20+ ways to write the same word) 

Dating Mo Dao Zu Shi in real history (or, Wei Ying might actually be long-lost royalty) 

In a very interesting turn of events, MXTX has confirmed in her latest interview in Subaru magazine, that the events of MDZS happened during Wei Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties (commonly referred to as the Six Dynasties era by English-speaking historians, even though these two don’t perfectly line up).

Yes, the same Wei 魏 in Wei Ying 魏婴, Wei Wuxian 魏无羡.

So the events in MDZS took place in the era immediately after the fall of the Qin dynasty (caused by Qin Shi Huang’s death and his sons not being able to measure up). Therefore, Wei Ying’s generation is in a time after the language has standardized into a single form. 

The Lan rules, at least the first set and the meaning of the forehead band, were written about 500 years before Wei Ying’s generation, at the founding of House Lan. So that would put it squarely in the pre-Qin, pre-lingual-standardization era. 

So by Wei Ying’s time, the Lan rules were essentially written in a dead, kinda useless, and very very hard-to-read-because-it-has-some-hundred-different-dialect language. 

That’s on top of the fact that it was probably written in the highest level of 书面语 shumianyu (written language) possible. I.e. extremely condensed and truncated (with zero punctuation). 

So the Lan rules are more or less a very thick law book of a different nation written in the strictest, most condensed dead language that is in no way, shape, or form still in practical use for Wei Ying (and most other people not Lan). Do you feel like reading it? I don’t. 

And that is why Wei Ying never figured out the original meaning of the forehead band despite having copied the rules hundreds of times (first day in class, he was already punished and sentenced to copying the rules 100 times by Lan Qiren). 

Because he was just copying the words without really reading them. This was mentioned when Wei Ying asked Lan Wangji the meaning of the Lan forehead band, and Lan Wangji replied with, you have copied the rules so many times and you still don’t know?  

But isn’t Wei Ying really well-read and smart, and what about the Wen book?

1/ Wei Ying is smart and well-read. There was one throw-away line in the book that mentioned his having read all the books available to him in Lotus Pier, and that he had read all kinds of trivia (including the Thousand Sores and Hundred Holes curse that got put on Jin Zixun). But it was also stated that he favored practical things or things that interested him. Lan rules in dead, extremely hard to read language are… well… yeah…

There was never any mention in canon where he remembered specific Lan rules unless it was literally beaten into him by teenage Lan Wangji.

2/ In the novel, the Lan rules are singled out as the only materials written in seal script. The Wen books were standard issued to everyone who took part in the Wen education camp. So the chance that it was written in seal script is low to none.  

Wei Ying is not the only person who doesn’t know the meaning of the Lan forehead band

Jiang Cheng didn't know either. Jin Ling didn't know either. During the Wen archery competition, when Wei Ying pulled off Lan Wangji's forehead band, he did ask Jiang Cheng what the hell was that, when Lan Wangji and other Lan members reacted like he did something shameful. Jiang Cheng replied with, how the hell would I know? Their house has so many rules. Just stop poking them. 

Jin Ling didn't know until the other Lan teenagers told him. The only characters who know this in canon are all members of Lan house. The impression that Wei Ying is the only one who doesn't know is 100 percent fanon. Keep in mind both Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling are clan heirs, so their education and knowledge of other houses absolutely are not low. 

In fact, the novel specifically shows that.....the rest of the cultivation world is not that clear on the actual specifics of Lan rules either. This is shown when Jin Zixun pressured Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji into drinking wine, a clear violation of Lan rules, and the rest of the cultivators in the banquet cheered him on.

 These cultivators were also heads of Houses or very high-ranking members. Many of them would have studied in Cloud Recess. So again, people who have high education… still know shit all about the actual specifics of Lan rules beyond a vague, general monk-like impression.

About the only other person aside from Wei Ying (and Lan members) who knew the specific rule that Lans do not drink in that banquet was Jin Guangyao, a character whose trademark is high intelligence and extreme social savvy (plus having roomed with Lan Xichen and taken care of him for unknown amount of time right before the Sunshot campaign)

Are there secret parts of the Lan rules?  

No. The Lan rules are public. The book is very clear on this. All Lan rules are carved into a massive stone placed at the foot of the mountain where Cloud Recess is, where anyone passing through or coming into House Lan can see it. 

This rule stone was first mentioned when Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian met for the first time. Wei Ying complained that he didn’t know the rules and why are there so many things forbidden in the Lan rules? Lan Wangji replied with, rules are written on the stone. Go read it yourself. 

The second time it was mentioned in the book, was Lan Qiren’s first class. The first thing he did was complained that even with the stone and rules being in open space, nobody bothered to read. So he will read the rules now. 

The book mentioned at least two different sets of Lan rules that both need to be obeyed: 礼则篇 Lize Pian (Book of Rites) 上义篇 Shang Yi Pian (Book of Justice). Whether the rules are separated further into more sets or not is unknown. 

Why are some Lan rules better known than others? 

Because Lan rules are based on 克己復禮 Keji Fuli, a real-life Confucius asceticism that calls for the restraint/purge of one’s ego and to return to the core rites. This is also newly confirmed in MXTX’s new interview, though it has been more or less heavily suggested in the book itself, with House Lan being known as the House of Gentlemen. 

Gentlemen here is not the Western ideal of Gentlemen, but rather a Confucius ideal and set of values. Confucius is the person who created this ideal in the first place. 

So it’s not that some rules are better known, but rather the entire image of Lan House is a huge pointer as to how they live their life: with great restraint.

—Terracotta—

Ok so I visited xi'an during my trip back to china (3 months ago?), and this idea popped into my head during the 9h train ride back to shangdong. I am of course 100% projecting my own love of the terracotta army onto Qin Shi Huang, in reality he did not care for this pit of mud statues depicting lowly commoners. In fact, no one ever bothered to write about it and they were lost to history until 1974 when some farmers digging a well stumbled upon them. But it's exactly the reason I'm so fascinated by them. QSH's tomb has not been excavated, and although I have a running joke about cracking it open--mercury vapors be damned--none of the riches inside will ever enchant me as much as the chance to see the face of a person who lived during this time.

the title Qin Shi Huangdi means "First Emperor of Qin" and was given to QSH by later historians. He actually called himself the Shi Huangdi, "First Emperor", and that is the title I've gone with here.

in English the other kingdoms are translated as "states" (i guess to avoid confusion?) but in chinese they are very much kingdoms.

The terracotta warriors used thousands of craftsmen, many of whom were slaves from conquered kingdoms. From a storytelling perspective I thought it would be more streamlined if there were two main artisans who reported directly to QSH.

the stripped shirt is based on this Chu woman figurine. Clothes were fairly unisex during this time and I thought it was a nice fit.

Paperwork: writing was done on books made of bamboo slips. Anecdotally, QSH had an impressive work ethic and would read 100 bills every night.

Bronze Goose lamp: ok this is actually a Han dynasty lamp pls forgive me. I saw this bad boy at the xi'an history museum and it's bewitched me body and soul. The goose neck is hollow and connects to a reservoir of water in the belly, which minimizes smoke and cools the lamp.

QSH is remembered as a brutal tyrant and brilliant statesman, but I wanted to present a more human version of him here. Bored, tired and drowning in work he refuses to delegate. His new empire is balanced as precariously as everything else on his desk.

The attendants standing behind him are holding little wood tablets called hu for taking notes. Their brushes are tucked into their hats/hair, inspired by Han dynasty custom. (You'll see me using Han stuff a lot. Their cultures were very similar to Qin, since it was only a few hundred years apart).

So I had a slight breakdown trying to find the correct hats for the eunuchs, and ended up redrawing everything the night I was due to publish. Closest thing I could come up with was a reference to a round-style Han Dynasty hat which evolved into this square Jin hat. Yes, this is a cry for help .

lú: third son, survives the plague due to living in an isolated community. all they want is to search for láng, they remember but its still incomplete, maybe finding láng will help, they feel phantom ears and antlers and are regarded as a bit of an insane person by their family.. eventually they find láng grave. they go to the mountains and become a hermit, sorting through their memories, writing them down is as much detail as they can. they die in their sleep of a combination of grief, sickness and old age

Hello everyone. It has been a long time. I was the semi-amateur historian formerly known as Aggrobot. I don't know what I am now.

I apologize for the long absence. I have neglected you all somewhat, but life caught up with me. After university I became a working person (社畜) and my love for history got away from me somewhat.

I felt inspired to return for a variety of reasons, chief among them re-reading some of @the-archlich and @arosthorn's old posts. Recalling the good times I had in this little community made me happy. So the calligraphy above is dedicated to you, my old history community.

This is not to say that I completely dropped my history studies. I now have a pretty strong understanding of both the Genpei period and the Nanbokucho period of Japanese History and my ability to read Classical Chinese poetry in kanbun kundoku has gotten better. But as of late, I have been itching to return to China, the land of my ancestors, the Land of Mountains and Rivers.

Perhaps there is one thing that should be updated on: I have become a published poet, although admittedly not in my native tongue. I have published a handful of Japanese poems in the local tanka magazine of a city I briefly lived in. In light of this endeavor, I took a poetic sobriquet: The Traveller of an Overflowing Dream (濫夢旅人). The sobriquet was inspired by the Xunzi (荀子) by the author of the same name, as well as the Chinese poet Li Bai (李白) and Japanese poet/author Natsume Soseki (夏目漱石). Perhaps I may share some of my poetry with you in the future. Perhaps I may even commit it to brush. Time will tell.

While I would like to return to studying Chinese history problem is, I don't know where to start anymore. While I still have some of my de Crespigny readings and a complete collection of Cao Pi's known poetry, in addition to some of my Republican era readings from my thesis. But alas, this is incomplete and not nearly up to standard. Moreover, I suspect that great research has been done since then that I am not aware. The world does not stop simply because I get bored haha.

I started listening historian keeping a panel about Ghost of Tsushima's armours (thank you so much Tracon for video taping these!) and 😭💖 at Jin being the typhoon that drove the mongols away with his sword having storm decorations, I have never noticed/connected that even though I love the game and have played it through multiple times.

Also, tidbit that nodachi aka "Sephiroth-sword" was meant to be used on horseback and suddenly everything makes so much sense

Okay expanding on something I was going to put in the tags but it drives me nuts when people say "ancient tang dynasty China."

There's a few reasons for this:

The Tang dynasty began in 618 CE, which even if we're only looking at western historical periodization is arguably the very tail end of late antiquity. Calling the WHOLE DYNASTY ancient because it begins in the end of what the west calls "ancient" feels silly.

It ends in 907 CE, which again, by western periodization is explicitly medieval.

Using western European historical periodization for Chinese history is dumb.

Chinese academic studies typically group these periods differently from the western periods. In English language journals, the Tang studies society journal actually includes the Sui (581 CE), Tang, and Five Dynasties periods. (Basically ending just before 1000 CE.) The journal of Song-Yuan studies actually includes "Song, Liao, Jin, Xia, and Yuan dynasties," and covers "middle period China."

You might say "oh medieval is a middle period! So obviously what comes before medieval is ancient, and therefore the tang dynasty is ancient."

But the journal "Early China" covers "all aspects of the culture and civilization of China from earliest times through the end of the Han dynasty period (CE 220)." Meaning that anything post-Han dynasty isn't ancient enough to be included in the ancient China journal.

It's probably MORE Accurate to say that Sui-Tang China is their equivalent to the "Early Middle Ages" and Song-Yuan is the "High Middle Ages." And we just call the Song-Yuan period "middle China". Lots of historians call tang dynasty "early medieval" for a reason!

"but it could be late antiquity, which is still ancient!" But late antiquity is defined in relationship to the remains of the ancient Roman empire which is incidentally, not near China.

My classical Chinese translation class focused on reading ancient Chinese didn't include anything from the tang dynasty because you need to be familiar with ancient Chinese before you get to tang literature

Hello there, I thought that it would be a fun little idea to show you the process of how I fit in every single persona for the main cast, this will be part one of how I, well not really me because I tried to do it... And got bored half way through... And very burnt out... So I'll leave it to the actual professionals, the historian YouTubers

And who is better to break down the Persona writing process of? Why none other than the Protagonist and their Persona : Macbeth

The Protagonist (Kaoru, Jin or Nagisa), much like Macbeth is someone who is doing everything they can to prevent something from happening, however, instead of power like Macbeth, the protagonist is trying to prevent what comes at the end of their deadline.

We see the protagonist changing constantly in the game, becoming more of a leader.

The theme of P6 R.E.M. is all about renewal, changing, second chances, doing things for the better, so that is why I want every Persona, including the protagonist, to embody some sort of change.

The protagonist is also aided by three velvet room attendants, like Macbeth was with the three witches, but they are for another time. Macbeth also has blood on his hands from his enemies, and the Protagonist has a similar thing with not just the enemies they've slain, but also a past action that they regret. The action depends on the protag you picked.

Macbeth's element is Psychic, a reference to his madness and eventual death and how the protagonist goes to the realm of the shadows, which is in people's dreams, INSOMNISPACE
