Should I run after him? I should, right? God... what have I done. Darting out the door, I stood on my tippy toes, trying to survey the area. No tall, sexy dudes within a 20-foot radius. Shit. I fished my piece of shit cell phone out of my tote bag and called my older brother, hoping to get a ride to the police station.

"Hey... Uh, Jason?"

"What do you want?" He responded through a mouth full of crisps.

"Could I get a ride somewhere?"

"For god's sake, Ellie, get a freakin' car. I'm tired of driving you around," He said in his thick cockney accent.

"Do you think I have the money for a car? Please... This is important."

The line went silent.

"Fine." He huffed.

"I'm just outside Camden Market."

"See you in a bit." The line clicked off.

It was ages before I saw him roll up in his rinky-dink car. "What took you so long?" I huffed as I plopped in the passenger seat.

"I had to finish my snack. Snacking is important." I rolled my eyes in protest. "Where to?" he asked.

"Umm... Don't be mad... Please."

"What did you do?" He said, looking at me with one of his eyebrows raised.

"Will you super-secret swear on it that you won't tell Dad?" I reached out my hand for the classic Ravensdale swear. Jason and I used to be really close until Dad kicked him out after he was caught selling pot and drinking in our attic with a bunch of his friends.

Even though Jason can be annoying, I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for him.

I told him everything, and he listened patiently. "Harry... that name sounds familiar. Is he really tall, got a bunch of tats, curly brown hair?" Fuck. He knows who he is; things just got semi-interesting.

"Uhh. Yeah. Let's hurry on now so he doesn't get arrested, shall we?" Jason turned and looked at me intensely, "I wouldn't help that boy if I were you."

"Oh, whatever, just drive. Come on now. Chop chop!" I nudged him playfully.

"I'm serious, El." He always called me that when he got frustrated.

"Jas, I don't really care what history you two have. This guy's done me a real solid, so let's go bail his ass out, shall we?"

Jason suddenly got absolutely livid and slammed his hand on the steering wheel. "El, you don't fucking get it, do you?" He becomes a whole different person when he's mad. "Harry is the one who brought the weed to the party that night. He's my supplier."

I didn't even know what to say. I couldn't imagine the man I met a couple of hours ago being a drug dealer based on how he practically flipped shit over me shoplifting. Weird hill to die on if you ask me.

"I never even smoked any of it." Jason put his face in his hands and rubbed his eyes. "Of course, Dad didn't believe a word I said." He pounded on the steering wheel once more. "Fuck! He never believes anything I say, El." He glanced over at me with tears brimming in his eyes. I've never seen my brother like this, so broken and helpless. In fact, I've never seen him cry.

"Jason, I'm so sorry." I looked up at him with sympathy.

"Just forget it." He scoffed while wiping his tears and putting the car in drive.

We drove for 10 minutes in awkward silence. I felt terrible and could not wrap my head around the fact that the seemingly sweet and normal guy I ran into earlier was why my brother had been couch surfing for over three months.

Harry... a drug dealer? Really? He seems so; I don't know. Not drug-dealery.

He did get aggressive with me when he was dragging me back to the shop, but it didn't feel too threatening. I secretly enjoyed it.

We stopped at a red light, and I looked over at my brother. He had brown eyes just like mine, but strangely enough, he had dirty blonde, curly hair that he cut short for the summer. He caught me looking at him and gave me the middle finger.

I know I'm his little sister, but I have this urge to protect him. Maybe it's because of Mom dying or the way I've seen Dad treat him, but I want to keep him safe.

I don't know if I can believe what he said about Harry. I really want to trust him, but I can't. He's lied to me before; why should I believe him now?

He’s pretty, you think, trying your best not to stare and failing miserably. Sharp cheekbones, pouty lips and mischevious eyes. You sip at your drink, not even tasting the rich chocolate because all your senses are focused on him somehow, with his delightful smile. It’s weird. You’re not usually so focused on other people like this but it’s... there’s something about him that makes you completely unable to draw your eyes away.

You duck your head when he stands, your ears burning bright red. Did he catch you staring? Wait, wait, calm down there’s no way he did. He wasn’t even looking at you! Right?

You stifle a shriek when you hear the other chair dragging across the floor with a metallic scrape. You slowly look up, color draining from your face. Holy shit it’s him. Wow. Wow okay uh. He’s. Sitting in front of you, lips wrapped around a straw and wow wow wow okay. Okay uh.

“Hi.” Even his voice sounds perfect! Cheerful, playful, a tad confused. Wait, confused?

“H-hi,” you stammer back, hands shaking as you reach for your own drink. Take a sip to calm yourself down and end up almost choking on it. Goddammit what is wrong with you! “Can I uh, can I help you?”

“Yeah, actually.” He grins, setting his drink down. You shrink in your seat. Is he going to say something about the staring? Should you apologize right now in advance? “I’m new and I was wondering if you could show me around? I’m looking for a shrine.”

You blink. A shrine? Why? Well, actually. That’s not a terribly uncommon question. Shrines are a big hit for tourists usually, especially the bigger ones so it’s not that surprising. Why he chose you out of all people beats you but you’re quick to nod, slamming your book shut. “Yes of course! Now?”

“If you could that’s be great!” He smiles at you, and you just melt.

“Yeah, I totally can. I’ve got time right now!” You shove your book into your little backpack and stand, nearly knocking over both the drinks in your haste, you scramble to catch yours while he gets his with ease, standing himself. “S-sorry!”

“It’s okay, no harm done.” He laughs and it takes all your will power not to go slackjawed. How can someone be so pretty?! You shake your head, willing those thoughts away. “Shall we?” He offers his hand to you.

“I feel like I should be saying that to you!” You giggle, taking his hand. He laughs again, along with you. You’re quick to take the lead once you’re outside of the cafe, starting down the trail to the most famous shrine in this little rinky dink town. But he seems to be curious about everything, stopping you often to ask what things were. Honestly it was a little weird, especially when he got confused over what a souvenir was. Was he just some really sheltered kid?

Whatever the case, you make it to the base of the shrine without too much hassling. There, you point up the stairs. “It’ll be at the top here. I uh, I guess I should let you go...?”

He looks up at the stairs for a moment before looking down at you and you shrink. His eyes suddenly look a lot... hungrier. Not in the way you might like either. “U-um?”

In a flash, he has you caged between his arms. Your back is against one of the bright orange poles of the gates leading up to the shrine and you squeak as he leans in close. “You could go... or you could stay. Be mine.” Your head is spinning. His? But you barely even...

“Yes.” You breathe out the word before you can even process what’s happening. He smirks at you.

“That’s what I like to hear.” He dips his head down and you shudder, tilting your neck up...

“Ow!” You flinch at the sudden feeling of sharp teeth biting into your shoulder. It jerks you out of your haze and you shove him back, enough to make him stumble a few steps. Your eyes widen. He’s got fluffy triangular ears on top of his head and weird markings on his face, framing golden eyes with slit pupils. Behind him flicks not one, not two, but nine fox tails, all with their distinctive markings. “Wh-what are you?” You know but you still ask. You have to ask.

He licks his lips, savoring the taste of your blood. “I have many names, but you, lovely, don’t need to know them.” He steps forward and you raise your arms to defend yourself. “Awww,” he coos, sickeningly sweet. “You think you have a choice in this!”

Isn’t anyone watching this? It’s a shrine for gods’ sake! But no one around you seems to notice. He tsks softly. “No one is going to hear you. Not until I’m through with you.”

You’d heard about a string of killings recently. All of the victims had either their heart or liver missing, sometimes both. Sometimes with extra organs too like eyes and lungs. Except one woman had made it out alive. People had called her crazy, absolutely insane since she claimed a kumiho had tried to kill her. Kumiho... nine tails... this must be him.

Think! What is it that kumihos like again? You almost can’t think with how he’s baring down on you again, fangs sharp in his mouth. But your memory hits you just before his teeth do. “Wait!” You gasp, putting your hands out to press against his chest. He sighs, leaning back. Impatiently staring at you as you fumble your words. “I-I can take you to a place with, with the best fried tofu!”

The way his ears perk up would be cute if it wasn’t so terrifying to begin with. You swallow, did you remember correctly? You must have, considering his growl is melting into a less menacing yet no less terrifying feral grin. “Okay,” he says, taking a few steps back. “But if you’re lying, you’ll be my next meal.”

You let out a breath. Okay you can do this. You know just the place. “O-okay um. Kumiho-ssi?”

“Jeongin.” He smiles, ears and tail and markings fading away. “Just call me Jeongin.”

Le Jayenge Dilwale Dulhaniya Song plays in the background as Vishakha applies mehendi on Sameer’s hand. She shares that he loved getting henna on his hands in childhood. You used to say that you will get henna on your hands in every single wedding that you will go to. Your Nanu used to tell you to marry early so he can see it too. They get emotional. Sameer apologizes to her. You came to the wedding even after whatever happened. The wedding would have been incomplete without you. He requests her to write N in Hindi. She does as told. Times may change and the society will also change but some chapters of life will always be incomplete without your parents. Mami ji and Mama ji look on unhappily. Sameer replies that Naina’s chapter is also incomplete. Rakesh Sir isn’t coming to the wedding. Naina’s Chacha ji has broken his ties with Tau ji and Tai ji. Naina’s Chacha ji loves me just like Nanu. He will be sad not seeing his brother in the wedding. I will feel equally bad seeing him sad in the wedding as much as Naina will. It was my mistake to get “Late” printed in front of Rakesh Sir’s name. Vishakha laughs a little. Shall I give you an idea to call him in the sangeet? He nods happily. She tells him the idea (in mute). A mother has to also know about the house where her son is getting married. Sameer smiles. Kamya and Rinki dance on Didi tera dewar deewana song. All the guests are having a ball seeing their performance. Other girls join them too. Voiceover – Naina:Mehendi happened nicely. We were waiting for the sangeet ceremony which was due in the evening. I was still hopeful about Papa coming to the function. Vishakha asks Sameer how the mehendi is. He calls it perfect. Sameer calls his School’s Principal. Principal Sir says a shayari. Sameer asks for a gift from him. Principal Sir jokes that he hasn’t changed at all. Sameer corrects himself. I need a favour. Principal Sir gets confused. Guests ask Beena why Anand hasn’t come to pick them till now. We are ready since half an hour. A few ladies watch them from downstairs and tell Beena ji to give in. Let’s go to the wedding together. Beena ji stays put. They see a car coming downstairs. Beena ji gets hopeful thinking that Anand will be inside but it turns out to be false. The neighbours leave in the car. Other guests are curious to go too. We have kept the shagun ready. Beena taunts them on saving some cash. She makes an angry face and heads inside. Sameer requests Principal Sir to try once. Principal Sir heads towards the stairs but then backs off out of fear. Sameer tells him to atleast try once. You are Principal Sir after all. Principal Sir turns back in fear yet again but Sameer requests him to try once for his best student (Naina). He even touches his feet and folds his hands before him. Principal Sir heads upstairs. Preeti is getting ready. Pooja asks about her sandals. Preeti tells her. Phula Bua reprimands the relatives to hurry up. Rinki asks her and Preeti how she is looking. They compliment her. Rinki goes to check on Naina. Bela helps everyone. Rinki announces that Naina is here. Naina steps forward wearing a lehenga (same dress that Madhuri had worn in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun). They compliment her. Bela puts a black teeka on her to save her from evil eyes. I understand your pain but we have to sometimes smile for no reason. You are looking dull without a smile. Naina smiles for her sake. Phula Bua asks Bela if Anand spoke to Rakesh. Is he coming? Bela looks sadly at Naina. Naina and her family come to Sameer’s house. They look at the decor in awe. Munna and Pundit greet the bride and her family. They also touch Naina’s feet. Pundit gets mesmerised seeing Rinki. Preeti shares that she is her sister. Phula Bua asks about the family of the groom. Munna and Pundit share that they have shouldered every responsibility of the wedding. Sameer’s mother, Bobby, Mama ji and Mami ji join them just then. The atmosphere gets tensed. They greet Naina’s family with folded hands. Naina seeks their blessings. Anand congratulates them individually. Mama ji welcomes them sweetly. Bela introduces Phula Bua to them. Mami ji gets excited hearing that Phula Bua is from Mumbai. Mama ji interrupts her. We can leave something for later. Voiceover – Naina:Naina smiles recalling the lines of the song – Dekho Maine Dekha Hai Ye Ik Sapna, Phoolon Ke Sheher Mein Ho Ghar Apna. That day I could realise that Sameer dint use to just sing those songs. He meant it and made it happen that day! Anand compliments the arrangements. Mama ji says it will be as your SIL has used our Kaku Sa’s money to good use. We used to be taught to earn first and then use money. Things have changed. Naina’s family gets quiet. Bela ask about Sameer. Mami ji taunts them indirectly that Sameer never does anything without asking or telling them. Bobby says he will come but where is Sameer’s FIL. Mama ji asks them about Rakesh as well. They are silent. It means Rakesh Sir wont come. Bobby nods. Seems like he isn’t over the bitterness yet. Mami ji says not everyone is like us. Let it be. Look at us. Do we feel upset? The only concern here is what if someone asks us about the father of the bride. What will we tell them? Bobby suggests deciding upon one reason. We will stay on the same page then. Mami ji laughs. Precap: The Sangeet Ceremony is on in full swing. Principal Sir tells Sameer to thank him when Rakesh Sir will agree. Sameer is positive about it. Vikrant says you have chosen a good place to hide Naagmani. Bela says I wanted to keep it safe and I couldn’t find a better place than this. They come inside and find Mahadev’s idol with many snakes around him. Vish calls Mahir and asks where are you? Alek picks the call and comes there, says he is very far. Sumitra and Ramona also come there, with vultures team. Rinki, Amita and her son come there. Vish asks where is Mahir? Sumitra asks her not to shout else she will be killed. She says you want to stay with my useless son. Vish says it is good that he broke up with you. Ramona says you will be dead. Sumitra asks where is Bela? Vish says do whatever you want, but I will not tell you. Sumitra says question was wrong and asks where your friend Bela went to get Naagmani. She says you do childish games. Sumitra says they have went, but I didn’t as I am planning more big. Vish asks where is Mahir? Sumitra says you are part of my plan and says if they come to save you. She makes her eyes snaky. Mahir is tied and kept inside the box, while Vish is tied and kept in the water small pool. Mahir asks Vish to save him and calls Sumitra. Alek and Ramona come there and laugh seeing water filling up in the box. Vish asks them to leave them. Ramona says Bela come or not, but you will die. Alek says you have no option than to play the game. Mahir shouts and says he will drown in water. Alek asks him to drown. Ramona asks Vish to see how he drowns. Vish cries and calls Mahir. Ramona says they will reach home and will get shocked. Bela and Vikrant get out of the bags. Sumitra scolds the people bringing ration and asks them to clean the fallen ration. Vish asks Mahir to take heavy breaths and says she will do something. She tries to free her hands, but is wearing bel patr garland, so she can’t become snake. She asks bholenath to help them. Bela and Vikrant come inside and say if we were seen in the CCTV. Vikrant says no. Bela hopes to save them. Mahir asks Vish to save them. Bela and Vikrant come to the room and see Vish and Mahir missing. Bela says sumitra knew that we were not here. Vikrant says their lives are in danger. Vish falls down with chair in the water. They come somewhere and find Sumitra, Ramona, Alek, Yuvi and the vultures. Sumitra asks if they brought Naagmani. They laugh. Bela asks where is Vish and Mahir? Sumitra asks where is Naagmani and what you did with it? She says I know everything as I am mastermind. She says I know that you will fool vultures. Rohini asks then why did you shake hands with them. Bela asks where are they? Sumitra asks them to follow them. Bela and Vikrant follow them and see Mahir and Vish. They see Bel Patr on the way. Sumitra says you can’t go inside. Vish says I won’t let anything happen to Mahir. Vikrant gets angry. Vish manages to free herself and go to the box. Sumitra asks Bela to give Naagmani to her. Vish asks her not to give Naagmani to her. Sumitra tells that Vish wants your husband to die as her husband loves you. Bela looks on and cries. Sumitra says you can’t take any more step. Bela asks her to stop the water flow. Mahir suffocates as he is about to get drown. Vish tries to climb the box. Sumitra asks her to give Naagmani. Yuvi asks Sumitra to ask Kuhu to make pakodas. Sumitra says if she would have been here, then she would have died before Mahir. They laugh. Sumitra gives commentary and says if Vish will use bel patr and risk her life to save Mahir’s life. Yuvi and everyone laughs. Bela asks them to stop the water. Vish asks Mahir to give his hand after climbing up. Alek says you will die first. Ramona says this will go on for 2 mins. Rinki says they will die. Bela asks them to stop water and says you will get Naagmani, but you have to leave them first. Sumitra says you can’t ask us to agree and says no have no option. Bela says I will give Naagmani. Sumitra asks her to hurry up and says you have no time. Bela prays and Naagmani comes in her hand. Sumitra gets happy and asks to give Naagmani. Bela asks them to free Mahir and Vish. Sumitra asks Rinki to stop the water. Rinki stops the water. Sumitra gets the naagmani. Alek congratulates her. Vish manages to take Mahir out, Rinki runs and pushes Vish in the water box. Vikrant and Bela run to save Vish. Bela runs to Mahir. Vikrant tells Vish that he won’t let anything happen to her. Vish closes her eyes. Bela asks Mahir to get up. Bela and Vikrant shouts Vish’s name. Sumitra and Yuvi laugh and tell that wicket is gone. Sumitra and her team walk away from there. Amita asks Sumitra to give their share. Sumitra asks them to bend down and request them so that Naagrani gets some sympathy. She keeps the Naagmani and says t is so beautiful. She calls the snake and asks them to protect Naagmani . She says Naagmani is more precious than your lives. She tells that if anyone tries to touch it then will be burnt, as Bela give it in my hand, it is mine. She says lets go and do the remaining rituals. Andy and Kuhu are in the room. Kuhu says I don’t know where I have kept her rashes powder. She says Boltu knows where are her stuff? Boltu comes there and says it is in cupboard 2 drawer. Kuhu hugs him. Boltu tells that his younger brother Chintu is troubling him. Andy asks Chintu to come and scolds Boltu for pressurizing him to study. Boltu says if you don’t study then will be dead. Andy talks to Chintu and says we study and get education for ourselves. He asks him to keep on learning and tells the meaning of Fail…first attempt in learning. Kuhu says you must have taught us like this. Andy says I missed your childhood and tells that kids have to understand the books. Vikrant and Bela burn Vish’s dead body. Vikrant and Bela cry. Vikrant says I can’t do this. Bela says you have to do this. Vikrant recalls Vish and his moments. Precap:Bela hugs Mahir. She tells Naag guru that the snakes who were taking care of Naagmani told that Vish has stolen it, but how can it be possible as she is dead. Naag guru says her soul is in this world.
