Y'all ever wandered exactly what music would Alastor listen to?

Well do I have a treat for you!

tl;dr I've made a biblically historically accurate playlist with jazz from 1920 - 1933. Enjoy!

As an old jazz enjoyer, baby swing dancer, hazbin hotel fandom inhabitant and an adhd owner, recently I developed a raging hiperfixation with history of jazz.

So of course I was into the idea of finding a playlist which have recordings from the ✨period✨

You know, stuff that Alastor could actually air in his radio show. Albeit most playlists I found, between music from 1920, have also electro swing and more contemporary music, as well as songs from the show.

So I've made one myself.

Without further ado, here is how madness looks like:

I highly recommend to listen to the playlist on shuffle, since I added the tracks by artist. So it's more fun to have it a bit mixed 🙃🔀

Based on what I could find, Alastor died in his thirties. Most resources state that it was his early thirties. His year of death is 1933 (after fandom wiki). For this project I made an assumption that he lived between 1900 - 1933 and worked in the radio his whole adult life. So on the playlist you'll find the music recorded in years 1920 - 1933.

Vivzie pointed out that Alastor liked Cab Calloway, Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" and his favorite song would be "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" from the "Annie" musical. Especially that the latter was an inspiration for his character. BUT.

"Annie" musical premiered in 1977, so songs from that work are too modern for the playlist. Although Alastor could enjoy the "Little Orphan Annie", a 1930/31 radio drama show. As far as I'm concerned, it only had a theme song, which unfortunately I can't find on Spotify.

Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" premiered in 1936, but I decided to include it. Let's pretend that the year of death is contractual in this case 😏

Unfortunately most of the jazz standards from 1920 was first recorded after 1940, so I guess they couldn't got into 20s/30s radio. But maybe I should chill a bit on the radio part and include stuff that Alastor could enjoy live, hanging out with Mimzy at some local speakeasies? Whaddya say?

I hope you'll appreciate my exquisite sense of humor, since I was able to choose some tracks basing on the sheer hilarity of how their titles suits our Bambi 🤡 Can you spot them?

I'm not an expert, just a crazy person with too much time on her hands. So if you spot some inaccuracies gimme a shout 👀

Pony - grunge-ish, like moody ahh 2000s emo music (think Green Day, mcr, panic at the disco, mb some mitski, etc.) kinda Billie Eilish coded. jeans, dark colored hoodies, earbuds/headphones in ALL. THE. TIME. Blasting music so loud he’s gonna damage his ears. 100% has a tumblr. Wrote the first half of the NGCS poem on his converse and wrote the other half on Johnny’s.n

Soda - Sweatpants, hoodies, shirts, all from Nike, he’s either wearing Nike sneakers or slides bro does not gaf 😭🙏 has a horrible TikTok addiction, sends the gang SO MANY random ahh clips from tt or yt, Dally is ready to commit murder. Eats hot Cheetos/takis more than any other food. Uses gen alpha slang at a horrific level, Darry can’t understand what he’s saying but like, no one older than five really can. Played/plays basketball, used to play with Steve.

Darry - basically the same as in the og timeline, jeans, dark colored t-shirts. Was also a Nike guy in high school, mainly uses Facebook but does have Snapchat so he can text the gang, doesn’t use it aside from communicating, “if Life360 has no users I am DEAD” idk I don’t have much for him 😭

Johnny - Grunge/emo aesthetic, baggy jeans, cargo pants, oversized shirts and hoodies, depresso espresso. 100% would listen to mitski and the crane wives, draws on his converse (pony’s written the second half of the NGCS poem on his) him and Pony share Spotify playlists.

Dally - I have no clue 😭 also a Nike guy, only wears sweatpants, lazy af. Basic white/black t-shirts with sweatpants, has pj pants on 99% of the time. Listens to rap/the dirtiest music known to mankind, srsly everyone else is disgusted by his music taste, aux cord privileges permanently revoked. (and mb he also listens to Taylor swift, who knows) only wears slides and crocs, teachers hate him. Highest grade is a C-. (He’s very proud of it)

Two-bit - Disney merch, Disney merch, Disney merch. ANYTHING with Mickey on it, mainly Disney hoodies/shirts and jeans or sweatpants. Wears Yeezy slides, never at school but still somehow passing most classes. (Passing as in Cs and Ds) also listens to mostly rap music, before he turned 18, any time an older than 18 Darry would go near him he would scream “IM A MINOR” and run away. Now that he isn’t a minor anymore he just screams “HES TOUCHING ME 😱” and Darry’s standing there like “Kieth pls I’m on the other side of the room”

Steve - Same as Soda, js wears converse more than Nike. Will NEVER wear a sweatshirt/long sleeves, he’s either in a tank top or t-shirt. The kinda guy to wear shorts in the middle of December (soda is too tbh) played basketball with Soda at one point but quit bc he felt like he was too short. Follows celebrity gossip like a madman and gossips with Soda all the time. Watches those kiddie yt family channels in his free time, treats them like reality tv. Watches keeping up with the Kardashians (also with Soda)

BONUS:

Cherry: Lululemon girlie, tennis skirts, t-shirts, athleta leggings, uggs. Gets Starbucks all. The. Time, owns like 5 of those Kendra Scott necklaces, listens to Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and Lana del ray, was a huge swiftie when she was younger, wears sodas hoodies all the time too. Socs have a running investigation on whose hoodies she’s wearing, they never get it right lol.

Absolutely no worries! I like getting stuff to respond to, it's the opposite of a bother <3

So Redacted Audio, formerly Redacted ASMR, is a channel on youtube with a, quite frankly, massive amount of audio, and since it's been running for over 4 years now it can be a LOT to sort through. Fortunately, he's done a really good job curating and organizing playlists for the different speaker-characters.

Everything is within the same universe, and many of the characters have interacted with each other. The context is that the location is a fictional city named Dahlia set somewhere in California, which is a "cornerstone" city for magical society. The best way to get a solid rundown on magic and the setting is to listen through the Freelancer Season 1 playlist.

This one is already arranged in chronological order* and also has the benefit of giving a sampler of sorts for a wider variety of speakers. One thing to be aware of ahead of time: While this was actively being published, Erik hadn't decided who the listener-character (nicknamed Freelancer) would be romancing, so it starts off with a lot of potential toward all of them except Caelum. As it went, there were polls in the discord server that he used to run, and popular consensus eventually narrowed it down to Gavin. The first time I listened was after all of that, and I was more fond of Damien, but I'm personally pleased with Gavin now, and this playlist has been one of my favorites to just revisit if I'm bored.

*Well, mostly. There was a point where the channel got a strike for some of the audios being too spicy and he removed and/or edited some of them to try to avoid being demonetized. The first Gavin audio is one of the ones that got edited, and #3 on the playlist accidentally got relocated. It's been a long time, but I think it was originally after what's now #6, the second Caelum audio.

Aside from that one as a good introduction to the channel as a whole, there are some "main" characters that have had the most attention.

One is a group of wolf shifters: David, the current head of the pack (Chronological for his listener. A lot of people aren't super fond of the earliest ones for him, #3-5, because the character evolved a bit and they aren't really representative any longer) Asher, his second Milo, another pack member, which is absolutely underselling him, he's one of my favorites

There are a couple of vampires: Vincent, the OG for the channel Sam, a common favorite who's listener is a member of David's pack

While most of the playlists are specific to character, there are a few thematic ones as well, all of which are chronological within themselves. Now, chronology with respect to each other can start to get a bit confusing, because of how long it's taken for some of them to play out.

If you want to get a feel for the characters before worrying too much about timeline, I'd listen through most playlists as they're arranged with one main caveat:

When you hit the audios titled Inversion, give those a pause until you've listened to more speakers. Inversion was a huge crossover he did that has 10+ speakers involved.

A personal favorite has been Vega. I'm actually super not fond of the first audio he's in, which is also in the Freelance list, so I skip that one when I relisten. The first one in this list is that one with the Freelancer, but the second and onward has a demon listener nicknamed Warden. We just got an update on his story today/last night and I've been a little unwell about it 🙃

I am realizing I could go on and on and on and I kind of have, so I'm going to stop there. Hopefully that's enough to dip your toes in. I'll gladly help out with any follow-up questions, too :3

Weirdly Specific Artist Ask Game

4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw

Since it's you sending this ask, the fave I got to answer this with has to be the one and only, Hib/ari Ky/oya 🤣🤣🤣 The first look at his design, it looks so simple. Nothing really too complicated with his hairstyle. He would fit into that one meme where this user is trying to compile "basic black hair guy" from various media (basic black hair guy??? but he's so ikemen and popular??? that's how you know he has 10000 aura & charisma *biased*). But then when you actually try to draw him, there's just something about him that I find hard to capture. Or maybe it's because he's my fave, that my brain just hyperfocuses on the tiny details that makes him *HIM* that sets him apart from other characters with similar designs. Then, I just end up overthinking how I draw him. And that makes him such a bitch to draw.

6. Anything that might inspire you subconsciously (i.e. this horse wasn't supposed to look like the Last Unicorn but I see it)

Game OSTs and maps/areas! I listened to the whole playlist of Enka//nomiya (from Gen/shin) so much, it lowkey ended up as an inspiration for Kana's character and general vibes, especially for a certain part of her lore. I originally listened to it for just studying because it helps me focus, then somehow the whole playlist AND the map/area itself is Kana-core now.

If I just have to rec a few from this playlist though, these are the ones: Soft Moans of the Remains, Sink Into Oblivion, Tearless Souls of Byakuya, Hope or Nostalgia, Vanished Beyond Recall, Combat Beneath the Waves (most of the titles ahahaha...🙃)

21. Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways

The first one that came to mind for this is Hiro/hiko Ar/aki-sensei! He's the mangaka who made Jo/jo's Biz/arre Adv/enture. His style is so legendary and iconic, I'm very sure you've seen it at least once. It's so different from mine that leans more towards the conventional pretty anime character style, but I LOVE Ara/ki-sensei's art so much, especially the fashion, poses and his grasp with drawing the forms/shape of his characters with such a god-level of consistency.

I remember someone making a gif of his character in different panels, arranging them so that they're facing in different angles. The result is so smooth, it's like you're rotating a 3d model with how consistent he drew the face structure, even if each one is from a different manga panel! 🤯🤯🤯✨✨✨

27. Do you warm up before getting to the good stuff? If so, what is it you draw to warm up with

It's a 50-50! Sometimes I do when I remember, then sometimes I don't because I either forgot to or it's just that good of a day for me to draw. And when I do forget, I would only remember because it kind of feels off for no reason, especially when I'm just at the sketching stage. When I realize that, I would open another canvas asap and start drawing random stuff. If it's coloring then, I usually don't need to warm up.

For my warm up subjects, I usually go for Kana or Kurumi, depending on my mood. I drew them so much, so they're the easiest and quickest to draw for me, they're great for warm-up sketches for that very reason. They're also a test to see rq if a certain day is a good drawing day. Because if I can't even draw KanaRumi properly, then I know my brain is not in the right setting to draw at that particular time just yet. I can stop the clownery very early and just switch to doing something else.

Ok everyone saw this coming but this ask ran away from me and I ramble about some song lyrics I associate with Chil & different facets of his life below the cut. Some people find my, ehem, heated rambles about Chil entertaining, this is your cue to get out the popcorn.

When thinking about songs for Chil I have 3 angles I take: About Chilchuck, about him and his wife, or about him & Marcille. Marchil is so engraved into me with their arcs together, that they’re like the concept of closure and letting go and letting yourself live again to me, sorry for all the non-enjoyers… But his dynamic with Marcille is a large part of his character arc so still fits, rock on.

I think currently my top song for him is Jackrabbit by San Fermin, because it combines all three it makes me go wild. It’s about trepidation… Throwing yourself into it even despite the fear (working with traps, survival in poverty where you have to rush & hustle), or just staying there paralyzed(not reaching out to his wife). Flight or freeze!! Saying goodbyes and saying hellos!! Not dying alone!! The life cycle of a wild rabbit living and dying, the baton pass race of life from generation to generation!! Chil and his daughters even!!! Going through life at a frenzied pace!! It is so Chilchuck and so marchil, and the music does give that hurried and scared energy to me too, and sigh the Marcille side to it with fear of death too…

Extra fun context but the other day on the discord server we were talking about what animal each character’s fursona would be as we do and I thought of a rabbit for Chilchuck: Quick footed, ‘cowardly’, small and frail and seen as weak 🙃, athletic and slender, pulls stunts, stressed out, has very fine hearing and has good instincts, etc. And ofc that fits really well with Marcille since she’s kinda associated with dungeon rabbits hehe~ But I think while Marcille’s 100% the cute round rabbit Chil’s more like a brown hare, more wild and like, more like a jackalope if we’re still doing monsters... I do lowkey find it more fun than his associated monster being mimics because he’s crabby, because they’re clever (with where they place themselves) and because of how he has a soft shell but soft insides, lol.

Depression Quest:

My very First Idea™ for Cult of the Lamb. It follows the canon ending of Lamb conquering The One Who Waits. Essentially, the Lamb turns Narinder into a trophy husband, and Narinder does not have a good time.

This is my darkest au and includes things such as abuse, self harm, depression, etc. My favorite thing is the fact that Ratoo and Narinder eventually become friends. I've written a chapter but the fic won't be updated often. Tag: #cotl depression quest

The Courtship of the God of Death:

This is the fic I've published on AO3. Follows the alternate ending of The One Who Waits regaining the Red Crown and his freedom, but instead of sacrificing the Lamb, he accepts their proposal to become his Consort and rule over the Cult by his side. He enjoys his victory, deals with the Lamb's affection for him, and processes what happened between he and his siblings.

It starts out lighthearted, then becomes a descent into darker themes such as obsession, jealousy, manipulation, emotional/psychological abuse, and the toxic relationship between the Lamb and Narinder. It also includes some violence and gore. It borrows some stuff from Depression Quest, and involves the majority of my headcanons/worldbuilding. Restart:

Follows the alternate ending of The One Who Waits sacrificing the Lamb and regaining the Red Crown. He gets bored and decides to time/worldjump to another version of The Lands of the Old Faith, replacing Ratau/the Lamb as the crusader against the Bishops. Too bad he's a thousand years out of practice.

This is more slice of life and includes Narinder and Lamb arguing like a married couple but there's some drama in there. It does include violence and gore since Narinder does have to go on his Crusades and fight his siblings. This one does not have a fic written, it's more ideas I've doodled. Well, I did have a chapter written, but it may be posted as a separate piece instead.

tl;dr Narinder goes New Game+ and becomes the player character (but he really sucks at it). Tag: #cotl restart

19th Century AU:

Created after watching of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma. It follows Prince Narinder of the Kingdom of the Old Faith Amenthes, investor of Ratau and Ratoo Trading Company, who has just moved into Acheron Estate. He bumps into the Lamb by chance while meeting with Ratau, and hires her as his servant after being intrigued by her fiery personality.

11. The Inspiration for Monsieur Rousseau and actually the entire region of Celarys was this pink-hair-only picrew and it completely spiraled out of my control XD this is his original picrew (left) and the sprite i've been workin on for a visual novel type thing (right)

I like characters that seem pretty secure in themselves but it's a pretty veneer hiding a whole host of problems... and he's a bit of a social butterfly, needs to be in the spotlight, does modeling work since he's the third son and not inheriting the company, runs an information network under the table... everything's surface level because underneath, well. There be dragons, ain't there?

18. Pronouns are mostly he but 'they' makes him happy too because it's usually someone describing his ethereal beauty and he eats that shit up XD 'Maraschino' is fine for most purposes, his closest brother and governess/maid call him Cino (with a 'sch' sound, not a hard c). his dad doesn't really address him at all 🙃 Mama called him Cino too, but she's been gone for a while...

26. Flower, flower... I flipped through a few lists of exotic beauties and kept coming back to the bird of paradise. Bright colors, strange construction, a beautiful work of art that screams "look at me!" Looking more into its care though, it can take three to five years for it to properly flower bc it needs to be established... secure... well cared for :) hehe

I loved reading Her Spell That Binds Me, such a beautiful novel! I was curious to know what your writing process is like? Do you create vision boards with literary references or other things that inspire you? Do you have any rituals/routines you like to do before, during or after writing? Are there particular spaces you like to write, in your home or in public?

I’m so glad you enjoyed my book! Here are my answers to your questions:

Writing Process ✍🏽

I love a good outline. I like to have the whole story mapped out in front of me, going beat by beat and filling in the gaps more and more as I get new ideas.

Then when I start the book, I use the outline as a jumping off point so I have room to forge my own path while still having a general sense of direction. I try to write at least once a day, even if it’s only a few sentences.

I also take notes, notes, and more notes. Random words I like, names, phrases, ideas for spells, a character’s thoughts, or a plot point I want to consider later. Literally anything that pops into my head throughout the day that I don’t want to forget.

My Inspirations 🎶

My biggest inspirations are movies, TV, and music, as well as books. I make a playlist of songs for every book I write. Some songs are more the vibe of the book while others are associated with specific scenes. I posted the playlists on Spotify!

I’ll also have a list of movies that I put on in the background while I write. Idk if that’s a writing process thing or an ADHD thing, might be a bit of both 🤣

For Her Spell That Binds Me, it was Pride and Prejudice (2005), Bridgerton, Dickinson, War and Peace (2016), Emma., and The Witch.

I’m currently writing Her Spell #2, and I’ve been rewatching Suspiria (2018) on a loop. I can’t stop watching it, it’s a problem. 🙃

Vision Boards 📸

I use Pinterest a bit but more so for social media stuff, like pictures and ideas for posts. Sometimes I’ll find a painting or picture that really speaks to me for a certain scene or character and I’ll save it in a folder for later. John William Waterhouse was a big inspiration for Her Spell #1.

I also cast the characters in the books with actors and made a grid with pictures and referred to it when I wrote character descriptions. Not every character has an actor associated with them but many of them do. Maybe at some point I’ll post about that but not for a while. People should imagine the characters for themselves first, I think.

Rituals/Routines 🕯️

I like to light candles and feel cosy when I write, with my cat sleeping next to me. I prefer writing at home so I have a controlled environment without as many distractions. I wrote Her Spell #1 during an unexpected period of unemployment so I knocked it out fairly quickly. Now I work full time again so I’ll write during my lunch breaks, after work, on weekends, whenever I can.

My favorite books are:

- The Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead - Incredibly underrated, I reread the series at least once a year.

- The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky - I would die for Charlie! I highly recommend watching Perks with the director/actor commentary. Stephen directed the movie as well.

- Tryst Six Venom by Penelope Douglas - This book changed my brain chemistry 😳

- The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid - Loooove, the main character is so complex and the love story is bittersweet. The twist was great as well.

- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott - It’s a perfect book and so comforting. I love the 90s movie adaptation the best.

please do talk about your zane & jesse feelings!!! whenever I see those two in your art I'm always curious as the thought process behind it, bc there's clearly something there! Smth I'm not seeing but want to see 👀👀

Hehe, thank you for asking! This got a little long, but please, come on this journey with me!!

Okay, so I feel I should preface this with saying, as you may have guessed, my favourite Remedy character by far is Jesse, (shocking, I know), and I think a lot of the feelings I have about this are partly filtered through my own understanding and interactions with her as a character (that other people might not feel the same way about), and also my need to put her in all the situations because I just want to :)

So, on the surface level, you've the general importance in AW2 placed on Zane specifically being a Director, which already hits those good parallels, along with the fact we have no idea why Zane was so freaked out by seeing Jesse and Darling on the tv, (which was also the only time in the main game she was either seen or mentioned, which makes this moment stand out to me- and its connection to the AWE DLC). Then there’s Zane meeting Darling, which bring us into head-cannon territory, being that Zane helped Darling make the Dynamite video, which- if he wasn’t already from the AWE DLC stuff- would make him aware of Jesse.

All of which lead to me just having... feelingssssss about them (which are explicitly none-shipping feelings!)

Like, my own sort of head cannon is that this current Zane is sort of a construct, an idea of what a sleezy 60s/70s filmmaker is, which in itself may unfortunately come with a certain level of not being particularly respectful towards women, his role as the filmmaker warping his perception of her. But also, at the end of the day, Jesse is both a very attractive and very powerful person, a combination I could absolutely imagine this Zane trying to purse and exploit for his own end.

However, unlike Darling who would trust him after a compliment and a flirty smile, Jesse- an infinitely more powerful person - would definitely not, and the clash of those personalities is fascinating to me! I need Zane’s sleezy attitude, the thinly veiled threat of danger he gives off to come up against the stubborn ‘fuck you’ energy of Jesse. Threat, tension, two dangerous people at an impasse all wrapped up in Hollywood glamour, sharp suits, pretty dresses, cocktail in hand! Do you see the vision???  

And aesthetically, I just want to draw more of them being glamourous in suits together (or, at least draw Jesse wearing a full suit…), just two powerful beings being powerful, you know? But I need their power displayed as excess, extravagance, an aesthetic all caught up in the filmmakers lens, does that make sense????

(I also just really like drawing Jesse in suits, imagining her fully embracing the ‘look’ of her role as Director, giving in to the glamour of it all on some level, which is partly how I see post cannon Jesse, (Director’s suit my beloved), and partly just me projecting my love of clothes onto her honestly…)

(On a sillier note, they’re the kind of people who are enemies -because Zane is an absolute bastard, and Jesse is having none of it -, but I could also imagine it being fun to see them team-up because they had to, imagine the banter!)

I hope this explains the vision, sorry it got so long and all over the place!! I’m still trying to cement all my feelings, so there's probably stuff I'm missing, but this was super fun to put together and has solidified a lot of things!! It’s definitely half cannon, half my own interests, born from this wonderful speculation period where anything could happen, so I thoroughly expect all my feelings to be made meaningless by cannon 🙃.

Also, not to like shamelessly plug my work here, but I do have a fanfic of them meeting that kind of goes into some of these feeling… {x}

In terms of what music They™ enjoy (ie. stuff they actually listened to at that time, so mostly older stuff than the aughts):

Gabriel's mostly an alt rock/metal/punk & similar type, which I'm sure will surprise approximately no one who's read Gabriel. His frequently played artists include Nine Inch Nails (his favorite band), Joy Division, Tool, Radiohead, RATM and the like. He's also been known to dabble in more electronic genres (eg. we share an appreciation for Daft Punk and Depeche Mode), enjoy classical music (eg. Beethoven), and have a certain nostalgic fondness for some classic rock, such as GNR and Pink Floyd, and Elton John, who was his late mother's favorite singer.

Jeff's a big classic rock snob* - think GNR, Zeppelin, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, CCR, Van Halen, Springsteen. His favorite band is Pink Floyd (favorite album Animals). Caveat: if you get him drunk enough there's a chance he'll jokingly (read: fully seriously) put on either Aquamarine by Aqua or Voulez-Vous by Abba and get very into it.
