Some Shane/Adelaide tattoo headcanons because I wholeheartedly believe Shane is a closet goth/highschool joth who thinks he's past his prime and too old to express himself that way anymore (not true, dude).
Before meeting Adelaide, Shane has 2 tattoos.
On his right bicep he has his highschool gridball number (he was drunk with teammates at the time) that he is SO embarrassed of as an adult. Hence he's almost always in a hoodie/long sleeves unless he's literally about to die of heat stroke.
He has the date Jas' parents died tattooed along his left collarbone, in Roman numerals. He doesn't reveal the significance of it until they've been dating for a REAL long time. Addie doesn't press early on since she knows how annoying it is to be asked "what does this tat mean?" all the time and doesn't think it's her business if he doesn't want to share.
(That quality of hers is one of the reasons he falls for her as quick as he does. He knows he's done for by their first date)
Their first Zuzu city date was NOT the Tunnelers game, but a trip for Adelaide to add to her flower power sleeve (all her tats were flowers/plants at the time). Shane gets a banger while waiting - a willow branch on his forearm.
After they get pizza and beer next door and share stories of bad highschool decisions :)
She finds out about his gridball tattoo that day. He shows her the roman numerals (without specifying what it actually is) and mentions he thinks it's not creative enough or a cliche.
"Don't worry about it too much. Who gives a shit if someone else has something similar? It's yours. If it makes you feel better... My first was a poorly done nautical star I got in some guy's basement my junior year. Soo glad that's covered up. For a first tattoo, yours is far from regrettable! "
"... It's not my first..."
"Huh?"
"I have a dumb highschool tattoo, too"
"SHOW MEEEE!!"
She can tell he's not too excited about that, but he does anyway and realizes he can actually laugh about it with her.
"Well, fair's fair. You can still see the star a bit if you look closely. Here," she turns around in the barstool and brushes her hair away from her shoulder. Shane (blushing like CRAZY) swipes a strand out of the way and rests a hand on her arm while trying to look for the outline somewhere hidden in the roses on her shoulder. She can feel his breath on her neck and she has to vice-grip the bar to control herself. First real date! Public place! CALM DOWN!
(When they're back in Pelican town later, at her cabin, she does not have the same composure)
He finally pulls his hand away and mumbles, "It's... Uh... Yeah... Shaky... Shaky lines, huh...?"
A few years later, after getting engaged, they decide to get matching tattoos of a sunflower and wheat. Shane's finally covers up the gridball tat, and Adelaide gets hers in the same spot to fill out some more of her sleeve.
Shane is too embarrassed to explain to their artist why they chose that to be their permanent engagement ring. He dances around it - "we're farmers, fall is death but the sign of new beginnings to come, big black center seemed like a good cover-up choice, etc etc"
When Shane stops talking and concentrates on the gun buzzing on his arm, a smug Adelaide explains: "What tough guy here fails to mention is that I first told him I loved him back when we were harvesting my sunflower and wheat crops, our first autumn together."
He never puts that damn hoodie on again - he always wants to be able to see it.
