The abilities of Proto Man and Bass in Mega Man 10 serve as interesting counterpoints to the titular character, and provide significant changes to gameplay through very simple alterations. Proto Man’s ability to block some enemy fire with his shield, as well as charge his blaster, is nicely counterbalanced by the additional damage and knockback he receives when hit. Even Bass, who can fire in multiple directions, is highly different from Mega Man due to the fact that his shots don’t go through walls, a massive disadvantage against certain enemies and Robot Masters. By including these counterpoints to the original character, the game is able to provide the player with alternatives that may even address desired mechanics, but with a gameplay cost that makes it all feel worthwhile.

Among the various strategies available to the player in Monster Hunter: World, one that sticks out significantly among them is the act of baiting and leading aggressive monsters into the environment or den where a different species of monster lies in wait. With the right timing, these two monsters begin fighting, and will pick away at each other’s health until one runs away or falls. However, this method isn’t without risk, and is often employed only after the player has gained a strong understanding of the behaviors of many of the monsters in a given area.

A major consideration made about the Robot Masters in Mega Man 9 was the importance of differentiating them from previous bosses while still maintaining the core formula. One major change was the inclusion of more vertically focused boss fights, which required quick thinking and timing to line up shots during brief windows where a Robot Master was finally in range.

Verticality is heavily emphasized in Monster Hunter 4, as well as the ability to mount monsters in an attempt to defeat them. While a minor change on the surface, this greatly expands the strategies that players can undertake when going after monsters, giving them more opportunities to use the environment as more than just an arena. On the other hand, the titular monsters are able to take advantage of this as well, and thus change up even familiar adversaries in interesting ways.
