So, you get to hire the latest camera for a reasonable rate. It’s the sensible way to access quality equipment without paying a fortune for it.
Renting equipment first however can be the sensible way to test a variety of cameras without investing too much.

BorrowFox Referral Program: Get £50 Free Credit
At BorrowFox it is our goal to make creativity an accessible commodity for the film and photography community of London. One of the biggest obstacles people in the creative space come up against is the sometimes overwhelming expense of high end equipment. The film and photography industry requires passion, imagination, and creativity. However, if you can’t afford the right tools, these qualities are rendered useless. Unfortunately, good ideas and talent can only get you so far. Luckily, with the BorrowFox platform, it is possible to rent kit from other members of the industry who have rental rates that won’t break the bank.
While all of the offerings on BorrowFox are competitively priced, we wanted to make it even easier to hire your dream equipment. With our referral program, you can receive up to £50.00 to spend on your next transaction. In order to earn £25.00, all you have to do is send a referral link to one of your friends. They will be given £25.00 and so will you. You will make an extra £25.00 once they rent their first piece of equipment. It’s as simple as that.
While £50.00 would be a drop in the bucket if you were planning to buy new equipment, the credit can go a long way on BorrowFox. For example, you could try out a drone for your next shoot, or simply fly it around for fun, for as low as £10 a day. In the mood for some photographic nostalgia? Use your credit to rent out the classic Canon AE-1 for £50 a week. Need a fantastic cinema camera for your next shoot? Shave £50 off the rental fee for an ARRI Alexa Mini.
If any of these, or the countless pieces of kit available on BorrowFox appeal to you, just remember to take a look at our referral program. You won’t regret it.

Requirements of Finance
On my previous blog, I talked about how we gain money to produce a television show, such as major studios or crowdfunding. Now, to meet my final goal of understanding the pre- production process and the effect it has on the production stage, I will explain what will need to be done with the money I am now equipped with.
Equipment
The first thing we need to consider when spending the money is equipment. This includes the three basic pieces of kit: the camera, lighting rig and sound (usually a boom pole).
In terms of camera, the prices vary depending on what camera you decide to hire. Camera’s such as the Panasonic Varicam LT 4K can cost about £330 per day (or £990 a week) when hiring from VMI equipment (http://vmi.tv/equipment/151/4k-cameras/1421/panasonic-varicam-hire-london-lt-4k-camera ). On the other hand, you could hire from decodeuk (http://decodeuk.com/home/kit-hire/cameras/digital-film-cameras/Sony%20cameras/ ) and get the Sony FS7 camera for £165 per day. Alternatively, you could hire the ARRI Alexa Classic camera from mediadoghire (http://www.mediadoghire.com/camera-hire ) for £250 per day. In fact, it is the ARRI Alexa that is one of the most used cameras of the Sundance Film Festival in 2014, with movies such as Cesar’s Last Fast, Dig, Song One and Life after Beth using the model. Movies like The Guest and The Sleepwalker premiered at the film festival having ONLY used the ARRI Alexa (Source of film festival information: http://www.indiewire.com/2014/01/howd-they-shoot-that-heres-the-cameras-used-by-the-2014-sundance-filmmakers-30732/ ). Moreover, the camera was used by nearly every single Cinematography, Directing and Best Picture nominees of the 2014 Oscars, including American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, 12 Years a Slave and Gravity (Source of Oscars information: http://nofilmschool.com/2014/01/which-cameras-were-used-on-the-oscar-nominated-films-of-2014 ). If we were to choose a camera for our show, for example The Media Suite, it would be much cheaper as we wouldn’t need to make a television show of such as high standard. Furthermore, the cost wouldn’t be as steep as we would only need one camera, seeing as The Media Suite would be a single- camera show.
When it comes to lighting, we would need a lighting rig. We could hire LiteMat 2L LED kit from thegreenkit (http://www.greenkit.london/product/litemat-2l-led-kit-2 ) which runs from £55 per day to £165 per week. However, you could also get a lighting rig for £150 from allthekit (http://www.allthekit.com/lighting-rig.html ). Nonetheless, the option to get the lighting package including various lighting equipment for £99 per day from Camberwell Studios (http://www.camberwellstudios.co.uk/camberwell-studios-rates-pricing.html ). In terms of lighting on a smaller scale such as The Media Suite, we would have to take the same approach with the lighting as the cameras. The television show would be as expensive as others, though with it being a single- camera show, lighting will be much more important. We will need light to cover the whole of the filming area as we will using one camera to capture all the frames.
The last piece of equipment that mustn’t forget about is the boom pole to cover the sound. You can go to thekitroom (http://www.thekitroom.co.uk/content/40426/equipment/sound/microphones/rycote_boom_kit ) and hire a rode boom pole and Sennheiser MKH- 416 microphone for £30 a day. Likewise, you can hire Sennheiser MKH-416 boom microphone and housing for £23 per day from mediadoghire (http://www.mediadoghire.com/node/54 ). Sohobroadcast (http://www.sohobroadcast.com/details.aspx?ref=295&returnurl=/hire.aspx?type=5 ) also allow you to hire a boom pole, rode shot gun mic, basket and fluffy with long XLR for £25 per day. Once again, with The Media Suite being a much smaller show, it will only require a boom mic for the production stage, hence the cost of sound will be much lower.
Crew
Now that you have the three pieces of equipment, you will need to hire someone to operate them: the camera operator, lighting operator and the sound operator.
The day rate of a camera operator was shown to be £293 in 2011 (Source: http://www.televisual.com/blog-detail/Who-earns-what-in-TV_bid-261.html ) with this later changing to £315 in 2012 (http://www.televisual.com/blog-detail/TV-pay-survey-the-results-in-full_bid-351.html ). Now, you can hire a single camera operator for £295 per half day and £395 per full day with videoproductionslondon (http://www.videoproductionslondon.com/rates ). With hireacameraman (http://www.hireacameraman.co.uk ), you can hire a single camera operator for £350 per day. It costs around £1, 000 with bluefintv (http://www.bluefintv.com/broadcast-camera-crew-hire/ ) to hire a 2- man team, including a camera operator.
When hiring a lighting operator, you pay £25 per hour, £200 for an 8 hour day and £300 for a 12 hour day with audiocrew (http://audiocrew.net/wp/index.php/sound-engineer-hire-and-sound-crew-hire-kent/ ) to have one of their own lighting operators work with you. However, you can get a lighting technician for hire for £175 per day from promotivations (http://www.promotivations.co.uk/Hire/Detail/Lighting-Tech.html ).
Audiocrew (http://audiocrew.net/wp/index.php/sound-engineer-hire-and-sound-crew-hire-kent/ ) offer the same prices for their sound operator as their lighting operator, with the cost for hire being £25 per hour, £200 per 8 hour day and £300 per 12 hour day. On the other hand, Grimshawaudio (https://www.lastminutemusicians.com/members/grimshawaudio.html ) offer sound operator hire for £50.
For all the above jobs, we would be able to have our own cast and crew if making The Media Suite, meaning we wouldn’t need to hire as TV shows on a bigger scale do. Furthermore, we will probably only need one crew member for each job due to it being a single- camera show.
Crew Support
Once we’ve consider hiring the crew, we must think about the crew support. This includes catering for food and drinks, the wardrobe and costumes, the transport to location, clearances, the talent, and the location hire.
Every Occasion Catering (http://www.everyoccasioncatering.com/ ) and Nomadic Kitchen (http://www.nomadic-kitchen.com/ ) are possible choices for catering, with Nomadic Kitchen even doing catering for leading brands, such as Mango and Alexander McQueen. Honest Foods (http://honestfoodslondon.com/ ) has catered for shows such as Mr Sloane, White Chapel, and My Mad Fat Diary. However, if we were to cater for The Media Suite, we would most likely be provided with food at school and give a bit of money at most to pay for the extra food provided.
When it comes to costumes and wardrobe, Stageworld Costumes (http://www.stageworld-costumes.co.uk/prices.html ) could be a possible choice, with them working on productions like A Christmas Carol and Jekyll and Hyde. The Costume Studio (http://www.theknowledgeonline.com/profile/costume-studio-ltd ) could also be a possible choice. Costume Boutique (http://www.costumeboutique.co.uk/fancy-dress-hire-bespoke-costumes-london-about-us ) offers its services of costume making with a charge of £65 to £105 for a full costume. It’s worked on productions such as Jamie’s Family Christmas and Sunday Brunch. When working on The Media Suite, we wouldn’t really need a costume and wardrobe for hire as we have all the suitable clothing provided.
When deciding transport to the location, 1st Direct Vehicle Rentals (http://www.1stdirectvehiclerentals.co.uk/prestige.php ) offer a Mini Cooper S for hire at a price of £55 for 28+ days, which would be useful for transporting the talent. We could transport all equipment to the location by using the 4x4 transport including driver and vehicle, which is for hire at a price of £190 per day from makinlocations (http://makinlocations.co.uk/services/vehicles/ ). About The Media Suite, we wouldn’t really need transportation to the location as it would be filmed in school, and the only transportation we would need would be to get to school and back from school. And even then we could pay all that ourselves as we make that journey on a regular basis.
When considering clearances, Channel Four (http://www.channel4.com/info/commissioning/production-information/rights-and-clearances ) charge £124 per every 30 second unit of the track used in a C4 commission. They charge £91 per every 30 second for E4/More4 commission. ITV (http://www.itv.com/commissioning/guidelines/producers-guidelines ) allow the blanket agreement for clearances to apply should your project be funded by ITV (a minimum 20% of total budget) and the programme complies with OFCOM rules. The BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/tv/production/articles/archive-rights-clearances#non-bbc-archive ) states that BBC uses need to be pre- paid and BBC uses are subject to further payment. However, with The Media Suite, we will not really need to consider these clearances are the television show will most likely be upload online or on the school website.
In regards to the talent (or as many people know them as: the actors), it will be much cheaper when making The Media Suite as the stars including would hardly be as big. However, stars like Benedict Cumberbatch earn $525, 134 per season of Sherlock (http://coed.com/2016/08/01/benedict-cumberbatch-money-net-worth-how-much-is-benedict-cumberbatch-worth-right-now-benedict-timothy-carlton-cumberbatch/ ) whilst his co- star Martin Freeman (who featured in the Hobbit films, Fargo and the Office as well) has a net worth of $15 million (http://www.therichest.com/celebnetworth/celeb/actors/martin-freeman-net-worth/ ), whilst stars like Graham Norton earn £2.5 million from the BBC (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/20/bbc-presenters-angry-as-top-actors-avoid-salary-disclosure/ ). In fact, Kevin Spacey was paid $500, 000 per episode of House of Cards whilst Game of Thrones stars Emilia Clarke and Kit Harrington were paid $550, 000 per episode (http://screenrant.com/highest-paid-earning-actors-on-tv-television/?view=all ).
Finding a location is another thing to consider, with CentreStageStudios (http://www.centrestagestudios.co.uk/ ) charging weekday use for the studio at £950, and an extra £375 per day for weekends. However, you can also use the studios for hire like 3 Mills Studios (http://www.3mills.com/ ), featuring 9 filming stages and 10 rehearsal rooms, or Bentwater Parks (http://www.bentwatersparks.com/ ), which features 18 different areas to film. Alternatively, Hill Farm Studios (http://www.hillfarmavenue.com/ ) has 5 units as well as offices. For The Media Suite, we won’t need to hire a studio or location as we will be filming in school.
In conclusion... By understanding the requirements for finance, we won’t spend a lot of money on equipment that does not even ‘fit’ for our production. We can save money by considering what piece of equipment cost what, leading to us not having to stop filming all together because we don’t have enough money.
