Coffee Break Italian wins British Podcast Award

The British Podcast Awards took place last night in King’s Cross, London, and Coffee Break Italian was named Smartest Podcast 2017. Mark and Francesca were there to collect the award on behalf of the whole Coffee Break team.

The jury was made up of more than 50 independent judges from across the audio and media industry including representatives from The Observer, the Financial Times, New Statesman and The Sunday Times in addition to radio producers, film critics and journalists. Commenting on Coffee Break Italian, the judges said:

The gold goes to a completely new and novel use of the medium of podcasting with an approach that was light, funny and enjoyable which truly makes listeners more smart and informed, beyond their next dinner party.

Other winners included Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo’s Film Review podcast from the BBC, audioBoom’s Hip Hop Saved My Life with Romesh Ranganathan and The Inquiry from BBC Current Affairs for BBC World Service.

This is dull but really anything along the lines of: practise/just do it/have fun.

There are very few if any hard rules, everyone has different strengths so no, like, programme of advice is going to be appropriate for everyone.

You just gotta like... Try it? And then you're... Doing it?

houghton: what’s something you love that people compliment your pieces on?

But it's always super nice when someone points out word choices cos I live for that stuff!!

🔥 An unpopular opinion: the LITERAL funniest thing that romesh ranganathan has ever done is insistently referring to his friend/producer Rupert on the HHSML podcast as rumaj which had the (unintended?) consequence of everyone assuming that he was also Asian. The CONTINUED HYSTERICAL responses to the guests (especially if they were Asian!) going WTF HE'S WHITE???!!!!! never! Got! Old!!!!! FUNNIER BY FAR THAN ANY ACTUAL JOKE!!!!!

Hip hop saved my life (it's hosted by romesh ranganathan who is a British comedian, interviewing a different guest each time about hip hop. That's it. It's great. It's funny. They get really good guests! Probably helps if you like hip hop, but I don't think you have to)

Drink champs (nore and efn interview hip hop legends and sometimes some other ppl for hours, while getting them smashed. It's great! Probably helps if you like hip hop, but even if you don't particularly check out the amber rose, angie martinez, Pras, faith evans eps, I SWEAR)

Sooo many white guys (phoebe Robinson has really come into her own as an interviewer! When the guests are her friends which is like all the time now it really zings!!!!)

Wtf (I mean the original! I love comedy, and I love long form interviews, so. I would say more check out specific eps rather than all of them cos there's a million, and some are just ppl promoting shit. But i think the interviewing style has gotten really good, and there's a lot of amazing eps!!!)

Handsome rambler (hannibal buress' podcast, I haven't super kept up with it since it came back from hiatus but I really enjoyed it and all the theremin when I was recovering from surgery. Also it's hannibal buress and his mates and a theremin thing? What's not to love)
