Before there was Gensokyo of Humans or Magician Who Loved a Fake, there was Wholly Red, Ashiyama's self-published doujin series. Originally started in 2015 and still ongoing, with 28 chapters at the moment. A running storyline about tengu society, politics, journalism, office drama & comedy, and what it is to be a youkai. Focused near exclusively on the tengu and their own bubble within Gensokyo, with supporting roles for some of their neighbors.

Excited to finally get around to this. The translation's already done, actually, and the plan is to release a chapter twice per month until we catch up, after which point it'll just be "whenever there's an update".

As most of the series was published in book form first and then split into chapters for the Pixiv release used here, chapters vary a lot in length and each book also has its own story arc to an extent.

hatate is my fave meow meowrino ever so i was super happy to get to draw her heehee,, i was trying to make something…. edgier but it ended up being super colourful but!! i hope you like it anyways ToT

i know the three named tengu (well four now that megumu exists) are a popular group, and I like em a decent amonut too. I like aya and hatate’s dyanimc a lot and its the most anime rivals of all touhou pairs. And I think aya and momiji’s rocky back and forth that more than once ends with the physically fighting, is fun in lots of ways. But Momiji/Hatate is something that has sneaked up on my brain somewhat recently due to a very specific idea with them.

....Well, first I have to just admit that there’s just the obvious pleasing aesthetic in fanart of the tough, old-fashioned nine-to-five worker paired up with the trendy, nosy, kinda-awkward younger girl who acts without reserve around the other 😌

But if I were to dig a little deeper... Bits of canon and most fan consensus is that Momiji works dutifully as a patrol wolf on the mountain. She has her gripes about the way tengu hierachy does things, just like anyone else might, but she has accepted that this is just how it is and otherwise doesn’t think much of it.

Then things would be a little different with Hatate, who doesn’t really acknowledge or think about that hierachy and social order stuff at all when she talks to Momiji. And they get along and enjoy each other’s company 😄

But what if it wasn’t so simple??? As Momiji gets along with the bubbly crow tengu, there’s the occasional thought now and then that enters her head about how wolf tengu are inherently ‘lower’ than crow tengu, and how absurd that seems when she hangs out with Hatate. And ironically, the more Momiji gets along with Hatate, the more spite towards crow tengu as a whole starts to bubble into her thoughts

I don’t know if I’m entirely making sense. But i keep thinking of this soap opera/shoujo manga set up where Momiji and Hatate get closer, and Momiji enjoys taking the lead and initiating their dates. Because whether she does it conciously or not, it’d be a way of her feeling equal to or getting one up on crow tengu 🤔

(All of this is unrelated to the occasions where Momiji attacks and bites Aya because that has nothing to do with hierarchy or stuff, that’s just because Aya is Aya)
