hey,,,tell me about ur puppet master oc bcuz i lov her,,,
Sure :D
Her name is Poppy, just like all my other OCs she was named after the plant. Poppy flowers are a symbol of sleep, peace, and death, a lot of this symbolism comes from the fact opium is extracted from them. However despite these connotations it’s considered a pretty flower, with a cutsie name too, which I think fit her really well. The use of red and black colors in her design is also reminiscent of the flower, just look at it!
Poppy (the character) is the “daughter” (Not biologically, but rather a creation) of this words’ equivalent to the devil. She was created to help bring him back, but also created… Kind of out of spite, kind of just to see what would happen. See, he would always make twisted monsters, he thought it was fun, and putting a monstrous spin on his sister’s “humans” was kind of like a last “fuck you”.
Poppy herself is not human because humans have souls. She’s doesn’t have a soul. But she looks like a human, acts like a human, has emotions and thoughts like a human, she even grows like a human, so it really brings up the question of what constitutes as a human, and that ties in to a more… PhilosophicaI guess, overarching theme. People may see her as a monster, because monsters don’t have souls. But other than that she’s basically just like any other human. So, in a way, that makes her… A doll.
Pretty much the main theme or biggest motif of the story is heirship, becoming what your parental figures or those you look up to are, by choice or otherwise. This theme is present in EVERY character in some way, and Poppy is FAR from the only character to be treated like a doll, in fact that same theme is used for Holly, who has some slight parallels with Poppy for this reason (Not to mention they’re both red, but Holly has soul magic, SOUL magic, the thing Poppy lacks)
Poppy is like her “father’s” doll, created to help bring him back and that’s it. She’s a cocky little overpowered brat, but she’s also a very young child that’s been manipulated into this role. Even her powers are doll-based, specifically puppets, she can control and manipulate people like THEY’RE puppets. It’s kind of ironic, she’s the one really being manipulated but she doesn’t even know it, and her powers are entirely based on manipulation of others. She’s a puppet that has her own puppets.
Her personality is kind of like that of a normal kid, she’s impatient, impulsive, short-tempered, playful, and mischievous. However she’s also been encouraged to act malevolently, cruel behavior is rewarded, and treating people as if they’re her “toys” is just seen as normal. She’s a child with immense power, that alone is enough to make a kid coy, but rewarding them when they use this power cruely is going to result in.. Well, a monster.
She was raised by an order that wants to bring Crocus back, she was like their little gem, and her mother figure was Lobelia (lobelia flowers symbolize malevolence so that should give you an idea of the kind of person she is), and she’s pretty much been molded into the perfect little demon for their plans, she was always being used. Lobelia is the only person Poppy would never hurt, because she both fears her and is incredibly attached to her, she really is like an abusive mother. In all honesty, she’s the real monster.
Poppy is… Still a little girl though, she’s been lead to believe that once they finally bring Crocus back she’ll be like a “real” daughter to him, she has this fantasy in her head where her father is a good person that’s been wronged, that once he comes back it’ll all she’ll finally be allowed to do whatever she wants. She thinks she’ll be like a princess (Hence her outfit), and that Crocus will defeat his “evil” sister and everything will be right with the world again.
But that doesn’t happen, he doesn’t care about her. This fantasy where a father figure comes back to her and shows her the genuine love she craves just isn’t a reality, he rejects her. And that… Just kind of breaks her heart. And it DOES lead into a redemption arc, and her EVENTUALLY getting a proper father figure who was also missing a daughter. But the MAIN take-away from her story is that she has just as much humanity as anyone else. Humanity isn’t about whether you have a soul, it’s the ability to feel, to love, to grow, to show care and compassion, to be your own unique being. Sometimes the worst monsters are those who actively renounced that.
Iris, the God of this world, made humans. She made humans because she dreams of a life like that, a life where you can grow up, a finite life. She’s may be benevolent, but she doesn’t consider herself human, because she lacks the most human trait (in her eyes at least). She’s always going to be one thing, but by the end she sees that maybe… She can “grow” too. This is the person that Poppy has focused all her hate on for years, redirecting all the trauma she has faced at Iris, believing that it’s Iris’ fault for sealing her father away. And yet, Iris is the first person to tell poppy, outright, she’s not a doll, or a monster, or a demon, or a god. She’s just a human, a little girl that still needs to grow up.
