Colours Of the prayer flags, the monks' robes and the warm sweaters stand a stark contrast to everything around. This was especially true as we drove towards Sumdo on the way to Kinnaur from Kaza. The few green patches that we were seeing were replaced with bright brown mountains and equally brown waters of the Spiti river. What also stands as a strong contrast are the road conditions. One moment you are stuck in the middle of several landslides and then suddenly, you are on one of the smoothest roads you've ever been. The reason for this drastic change is clear as you reach Sumdo. We aren't sure which village these apple trees belong to. We had walked up to one of Chango's monasteries. Journey from Manali to Kaza A co-passenger requested the driver to halt for a toilet break. Two more followed. And then some more. Realising that everyone would like to relieve themselves, the driver announced a toilet break. Of course, there were no toilets around. Just find a sufficiently big rock to get behind and do your thing. Out of habit, we strolled around to take in the sights. We jumped the small streams and bent down to have a closer look at the flowers. And when the bus conductor whistled we ran towards the bus. The earth shook a little under our feet and it felt like we were swaying. As we took our seats on the bus, our heads spun and it felt like our hearts were going to burst. All of this only meant one thing – the Greater Himalayas were welcoming us! We had entered the high altitude zone of the Himalayas. (To be continued...) Journey from Manali to Spiti The scene changed dramatically from once were reached the Rohtang top. The mountain slopes were suddenly fully visible. There wasn’t a tree in sight, only mountain grass. Wildflowers had painted the mountains yellow and purple. Muddy paths had taken the place of blacktops at the start of the Manali Kaza route. Green was slowly but surely being driven out by brown. What had been a smooth albeit winding drive till now was starting to become bumpy. A co-passenger requested the driver to halt for a toilet break. Two more followed. And then some more. So the Spiti series resumes... After a rainy introduction to the Spiti valley, by the time the weather let us step out, it was bright and sunny. The previous evening we had gone to the bus stand in Kaza to enquire about the bus timings. A very friendly person there called us in, shoved his drunk friend out of the room, switched on the lights and said, "okay, write". Good thing we took notes, because there were quite a few buses that operated out of the Kaza depot! The next morning, we boarded the morning bus for Reckong Peo and decided to get off at just the beginning of Kinnaur district, in Chango. A game of light and shadow Added that just because the caption sounded cool 😀 Life here is certainly not a game, though. First come the green peas. Once they are harvested and the leftover grass spread on the roofs to dry to serve as fodder for the cattle, they'll start prepping for the winter, just before the apple season begins. All of this assuming they have a quiet summer with enough water and sunshine. They'll need to make sure they have enough ammunition to last those harsh months of severe winter when they'll be cut off from the rest of the world. This is not just planning for the future, it is literally planning for survival. Let's remember this when we take our cars, buses and bikes to the Spiti valley, before dangling our plastic bottles out on the riverside. Let's not carry our recklessly wasteful city attitude. Let's not judge life here using the same shallow parameters we use back at home. Let's observe and learn. For it's a lesson in resilience and respect played out right before our eyes.
