A Helping Hand for Charity.
With a £1.05 million ($1.28 million) buy-in, the event also offered the biggest first prize in the history of tournament poker – £19 million ($23.1 million) but it was the second-place finisher, American Bryn Kenney, not Zang, who came out with the biggest pile of cash.
As the two players prepared to face one another heads up at the London Hilton in Mayfair’s Park Lane, they agreed to a chop. Since at this stage Kenney outnumbered Zang 4 to 1 in chips, he took the lion’s share, £16.9 million ($20.5 million), to Zang’s £13.7 million ($16.6 million).
But Zang clawed his way back against his more experienced opponent. The payday may have been smaller, but it was still the third biggest ever prize in poker tournament history – and it was always about the trophy, right guys?
“Miracles happen,” mused an emotional Zang afterwards.
Kenney Tops All-Time Money List Kenney’s $20.5 million tops the previous record of $18.3 million won by Antonio Esfandiari at the first ever Big One for One Drop, which was held at the 2012 World Series of Poker.
The score catapults Kenney to the top of poker’s all-time money list, with an extraordinary $55 million in gross earnings, over $30 million of which has been accumulated in 2019 alone.
As well as his record score in London on Saturday, the 32-year-old Long Islander has picked up seven-figure wins at other Triton events in South Korea and Montenegro, as well as a score just short of $1 million at the Aussie Millions.
Like the aforementioned Big One for One Drop, the Triton event in London will donate a portion of the prize money to charities — in this case £50,000 ($60,750) of each buy-in.
That means the tournament raised $2.7 million for largely Hong Kong-based charities, dedicated to advancing medicine and improving the lives of disadvantaged children in Southeast Asia.
Who Owns Triton Poker? Triton was founded by two Malaysian billionaire high-stakes poker players, Paul Phua, a former junket operator and bookie, and Richard Yong, a data mining and IT magnate.
The pair were at the center of the biggest cash games in the world when poker erupted in Macau, circa 2010.
Just as wealthy Macau-based businessmen, like Phua and Yong, discovered of Texas hold’em, online poker was effectively shut down in the US by the Department of Justice.
That saw the best American pros, like Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan, skedaddle to Macau, many with copies of Cantonese for Dummies stuffed into their carry-on baggage.홀짝게임
Macau’s big game, which later moved to the Philippines, was notoriously secretive and poker fans would hang on for whispers of pots that had escalated into tens of millions of dollars.
Triton is essentially the public face of the big game – high-stakes poker transplanted into an open area, attracting the biggest players on the high-roller circuit, usually to Asian destinations, like Macau, Manila, and Jeju, South Korea. This is the first time the tour has stopped in London, and only the second time in Europe.
The record numbers at the WSOP this year showed that, despite reports to the contrary, poker is very much alive and well in the West. But it’s also booming in the East. And they like to play big.

This Day In Music: 15 Jan 2018
Irish singer Dolores O'Riordan died.
Tumblr media
Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries, an Irish musician and singer-songwriter, died unexpectedly while in London, England, for a recording session. The Cranberries had three hit singles in 1994: 'Linger,' 'Dreams,' and 'Zombie,' and their 1993 album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? was on the UK chart for a total of 86 weeks.
In the 1990s, O'Riordan had one of the most recognisable voices in rock. Her lilting mezzo-soprano voice, signature yodel, emphasised use of keening, and strong Limerick accent made her famous.
In mid-1990, on a Sunday afternoon, O'Riordan went to the bands rehearsal room, she sang a couple of songs she had written and also sang a Sinead O'Conner song. The band was impressed and gave her a cassette with instrumentals, asking her if she could work on it. When she returned with a rough version of "Linger", she was hired. Noel Hogan told Rolling Stone that, "the minute she sang, you know, it was like your jaw drops at her voice. Dolores was musically far superior to me, because she had been doing it all her life".
O'Riordan endured difficult touring conditions due to low income, sleeping on people's floors and in cramped vans across Ireland and the United Kingdom. Furthermore, she had to overcome her shyness at the time during the Cranberries' early live performances, singing "with her back to the audience."
Debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? written entirely by O'Riordan and guitarist Noel Hogan, reached number one on both the UK and Irish albums charts. It reached number 18 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart and stayed on this chart for 130 weeks; the album sold six million copies there.
O'Riordan told journalist and close friend Barry Egan in the Sunday Independent's Life magazine in October 2013 that she attempted suicide by overdosing on medication in 2012, but "wanted to live for her kids." O'Riordan also opened up about her traumatic personal history. Between the ages of eight and twelve, O'Riordan was sexually abused by a family friend for four years. Over time, she developed depression, deep self-loathing, and suicidal thoughts, which were exacerbated by her accelerating career and led to anorexia. She later stated that she would continue to move forward for the sake of her children and husband. O'Riordan's abuser approached her at her father's funeral in 2011 and apologised for his actions. In 2013, O'Riordan stated "For a year before my father died, I had nightmares about meeting him. I hadn't seen him in years until I ran into him at my father's funeral. I had excluded him from my life ".
In May 2017, O'Riordan publicly discussed her bipolar disorder, stating that she had been diagnosed in 2015. In September 2017, O'Riordan began composing a suicide note while drinking heavily and taking Lorazepam.
On January 14, O'Riordan arrived at the London Hilton on Park Lane hotel in Mayfair. O'Riordan called her mother at 2:00 a.m. on January 15, 2018. She was discovered unresponsive in the bathroom later that morning and was pronounced dead at 9:16 a.m.
The cause of death was not revealed until an inquest at Westminster Coroner's Court on September 6, which concluded that she died as a result of accidental drowning in a bath after being sedated by alcohol intoxication.

Pure Art Deco-dence in London

Pure Art Deco-dence in London

Michelin-starred restaurant Galvin at Windows is making waves from the top of the Park Lane Hilton
It comes as no surprise that Mayfair – London‘s capital for all things opulent and beautiful – is where you’ll find a healthy amount of Michelin-starred restaurants. They either flaunt it with stickers in the windows, or take it in well-practiced stride, the kind that surely must be taught to French children from grade school.
Galvin at Windows, without the option of decorating their eponymous windows, and whose staff seems utterly focused on quality and ambience, is anything but predictable.
This London restaurant is extraordinary.

But then we’re far from the first to take notice of the Hilton’s crowning jewel. Its Art-Deco-extravagance-meets-classic-French-form approach to luxury dining has seen it take home the Hotel Restaurant Team of the Year award from the Hotel Cateys Awards (2007); the Best Front of House award from Tatler (2007); and the Best Hotel Bar award from Imbibe Awards (2009).
In 2010, General Manager Fred Sirieix was nominated Manager of the Year at the Cateys – an awards program for hotels, hoteliers and front-of-house staff – and in October 2011, he received the illustrious Personality of the Year award at the National Restaurant Awards.

These would be little more than a series of fun facts were the restaurant’s menu not to live up to the hype. Phoning it in is not unheard of amongst the centuries-old Mayfair institutions when it comes to actual chow time.
So let us say this: The white garlic velouté (accompanied by native lobster, confit egg yolk and black garlic cream) truly seems to warp time. This is convenient, as it’s the first thing a visitor might consume after their delectable amuse-bouche, as it provides the rest of the meal with a dreamy quality.
Combine this with the vertigo, and the experience borders on psychedelic.
The “Prestige Menu” will get you three courses for £70 – a steal for the neighborhood. The sea bass with potato crust, chicken oysters, fennel purée and jus gras has the comforts of the Sunday roast put through the culinary transmutation of Chef Joo Won, who cut his teeth at Le Cordon Bleu in Marylebone. He was even part of Galvin at Windows’ 2006 launch team.

There’s a distinct absence of the kind of gastro-trickery you might find with young chefs new to Zone 1, whose punk guilt might land a martini glass full of pig-head-dust on your table, or some such experimental showboating.
No, sir. The pig’s head at Galvin at Windows comes crispy amid a roasted cutlet of Iberico pork, carrot and cumin purée and the dazzlingly named jus diablo.
Side dishes (at £6 each) of pomme purée and tenderstem broccoli stand up against the rest of the menu’s near-overwhelming savoriness.
Galvin at Windows is old-school glamour done right, with the views acting as a natural digestif to your almost paralyzing sumptuous meal.
Don’t worry: when the time comes, you can saunter back to speedy lifts, which will take you back down to earth.
