I have found some fantastic craft videos on YouTube lately. I'm a firm believer that 90% of all writing advice is exactly the same, but how it's verbalized/categorized/synthesized is way more important to it clicking with you.
I have found a person that clicks. Nothing they are saying is new information to me, but it was broken down in a way that helped me overcome a mental block I had been having for WEEKS! So anyway. . . here is a link to her YouTube channel.
Happy writing.

Movie #42 of 2024: The Core
Cringe defined.
The most ludicrous premise for a blockbuster action film since Face/Off. Post 9/11 disaster fantasy trashcan cinema. Whales save humans. Hilary Swank will make you cry. Scenery is chewed.
IMDB's new keyword descriptors include "Dark Comedy", but that's only during Tcheky Karyo's implosion death scene. It's about as much of a "dark comedy" as The Room.

Voiceplay Visuals - Mission: Jingle Bells
(This post almost definitely won't be super long, but there was no way I was not gonna make a post for this video!)
Mission Jingle Bells was released on the 22nd of December, 2018, and as you all obviously know, it's a fusion between the Mission Impossible theme music and the song Jingle Bells, and it was legit sponsored by Paramount Pictures! Good for you, VoicePlay! The music was arranged by Layne, but we're not here to talk about that, we're here for the video! (Which was done by both Layne and Eli). So let's get into this!
Tumblr media
'Hey you know how we got kidnapped for the Panic Medley videos? What if we got kidnapped again?' 😂
(Seriously, the Panic Medley videos were released just 5 months earlier, in July, and the Queen medley video, where Earl had to take on deities of death to get the chance to live again, was in November! 2018 was A Year)
Also I like that the camera feed says that the date and time is two minutes to midnight on Christmas eve, it's a nice touch.
Tumblr media
Get that sponsorship money! Get that exposure! (Also it's kinda funny how VoicePlay has had ties with Disney, Paramount, and Universal! Getting a whole variety of connections there!)
Tumblr media
Obligatory "man he looks so good here" 💜
Tumblr media
Fun fact: The voice of "Creepy Evil Santa" was actually done by Eli! As for who actually physically portrayed him, I'm not entirely sure. I think I've seen people saying it was Kathy? But I can't remember if they were joking or not
Tumblr media
A small thing, but I like how before Villain Santa tells you that the collar things actually control the guys' voices/vocalisations, the video actually kinda shows you! Villain Santa's presses a button on his device panel thing (see previous image), and then Geoff suddenly "kicks into gear", like starts doing exactly what is requested, no hesitation, as if he really is being controlled! It's neat!
(Follow me for more overexplanation of miniscule details /j)
Tumblr media
And yes of course I am going to mention the bow in Earl's beard. It's hilarious and adorable, 10/10, no notes
Tumblr media
And yes, their hands/wrists are all bound to the chairs with wrapping paper, with bows on top!
(Also I thought Geoff was the only one not wearing a tie but Eli isn't either!)
Tumblr media
I am kinda interested to know what the collars were made from actually (there isn't any BTS stuff for this video sadly - I checked)
Tumblr media
"What fun it is to ride and sing a-"
Tumblr media
"-sleighing song toniiight"
*grabby hands* Gimme the controls, GIVE ME THE CONTROLS! 😂
(Seriously Evil Santa dude, you could've done so much more!!!)
Tumblr media
J killed it with the rap part of course! (Who wrote that bit? Was it the same dude who wrote bits for VoicePlay's covers of Superstition and Valhalla Calling?)
Tumblr media
Kinda looks like J is giving Layne hope/encouragement/reassurance here and it's kinda sweet!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Geoff! You're not supposed to be enjoying this! 🤣
(But also his head bobbing is kinda fun/amusing - I guess when he can't sing with his hands like he usually does, moving his head will just have to do!)
Tumblr media
Now there's a freeze-frame bonus for sure! 😍
Tumblr media
Also just noticed Geoff is moving his fingers a little bit in this part! He cannot be fully stopped! XD
(Also hey are Eli's shoes the same ones that he wore in Creep and In The Air Tonight and maybe one or two other videos? He seems to like black sneakers with thick white soles on them)
Tumblr media
When the video started, the time on the camera feed was two minutes before midnight, and two minutes later... it's still two minutes before midnight! What kinda Polar Express time nonsense is this? 😂
Tumblr media
"I'm so pleased, you may leave now! Merry Christmas, VoicePlay!"
"Thank you, mister evil... supervillain guy... but can you untie us now? ...Someone's coming to untie us right?"
(Lol rip)
I remember this was one of the videos I watched not too long after I first discovered VoicePlay in 2019, and I'm pretty sure that I wasn't entirely certain who was speaking at the end, but of course now I know it's Geoff! (Though his typical speaking voice nowadays is an octave or so lower, lol)
Okay so not too short of a post after all (3 more images than my post for Baby Its Cold Outside, actually!), and definitely well worth it! But the next post I have in store? Well, there might be a solid chance of me hitting the image limit on that one, lol. See you again soon!

do you read books? if yes, do you have any recs? hope ur having a good week !
yesss and mostly romance books lmfao so look out:
she gets the girl- rachel lippincott and alyson derrick
wlw young adult romance where one helps the other be less awkward and nervous in talking to their crush but ends up falling for her instead while "helping," gasp v cutesy and scandalous and adorably cliche no?!
the seven husbands of evelyn hugo- taylor jenkins reid
need i explain further??! it's a modern staple in the wlw community and i am still losing my mind over the plot twist at the end of book and how she was so in love with celia hhhhhhh and ive only read it once so far!! i think i consumed it in like the span of three or four days lmfao bc it was THAT good. i was HOOKTH. the scenes are starting to fade away in clarity in my mind tho (im a very visual reader as in, i visualize and picture scenes in my mind when i fully immerse myself in a book or fanfic) in contrast with the way the book is collecting dust in my bookshelf/nightstand rn AHHAHHA i will need to reread it again soon (and lose my psyche over it!! again!!)
scrappy little nobody- anna kendrick
reaffirmed my love for anna kendrick bc it was very entertaining, amusing, and revelatory for me to read a memoir that was entirely in her voice; it felt as if she was speaking directly to me, yknow?? she was hilarious in her choice of wording and stories and i didn't even realize that i had finished the book until it was the last page <33 she is one of those actresses that actually make you feel like you are on the same earth as them bc they are human too (unlike taylor for me sometimes adfshjhk)
heartless- marissa meyer
slowly making my way through this book rn (amidst work, writing, reading fanfic, being addicted to tumblr, playing wild rift, etc etc) and so far so good! a spin on how the queen of hearts of wonderland came to be (and yes i bought the book after watching descendants ror lolololol bc i became SUPER obsessed with the qoh and her daughter in that universe <33); how she was supposed to marry the king but wasnt really interested in him bc she just wanted an ordinary life aspiring to be a baker and how she secretly fell in love with someone else instead gasp!! forbidden affairs who??! gregory maguire, the author of wicked, had good things to say ab it too so im confident in my rec!
percy jackson and the olympians series- rick riordan
no words needed; one of the first fandoms i got into and still obsessed with percabeth to this day!! i aspire to find my own annabeth chase one day <33
the divergent triology- veronica roth
even tho i spoiled myself with the ending of allegiant this young adult book series CHANGED MY BRAIN CHEMISTRY IN MIDDLE SCHOOL I TELL YOU. CHANGED. ALTERED. COMPLETELY DISMANTLED AND RECONFIGURED IT. highly recommend (the movies dont do it justice smh)
after the kiss- lauren layne
ummm so yea im embarrassed to say that i bought the ENTIRE series on kindle as well as the spinoff bc like fuckk i became too engrossed with the characters, the relationships, and their world i fear, a couple years back, and i was lapping up every single morsel of interaction btw them when the author would write them in in other books in the franchise. ever heard of how to lose a guy in 10 days?? wellll this first book in the series is basically exactly like that movie but with the roles reversed, with the guy trying to shake the girl off and the girl desperately clinging onto the relationship bc of/for an article. just with.... smut ADFDJHGHJK (i remember literally trying to search for fanfiction for the franchise bc like how can there not adafhjk. and another thing ab the smut!! it's like... actually really well written?? very emotional and not super duper explicit while still being hot, iirc, at least compared to some of the other stuff that ive read sdfshjk. like there's actually feelings involved separately and bc of the boombayah yknow? i actually wish some of the smut that i come across in fanfic sometimes can incorporate that soft/romantic/angsty aspect too haha)
what else what else hmmm
i never got to finish the fault in our stars but that is a rec too, twilight (if only it's bc it's like a huge cultural phenomenon LOLLLL; from what i have read so far it's... decent?? if a bit cringey), sense and sensibility is decent so far as well; and i just got ahold of my copy of wicked and the wednesday novel soooo yall might (ie definitely will) hear from me regarding those soon tooooo

Since 1990, ZK-CAW has been on display at the local McDonald's and periodically makes the rounds on Facebook.
However, very few people actually know its history. Now said history is extremely long, so I'm going to gloss over a number of details.
Built at Long Beach, California, for the USAAF as a C-47A-65-DL, it was given the s/n 41-10460 and ferried to Brisbane to join the 5th Air Force by 1943.
It was briefly loaned to 38 SQDRN RAAF from April-October 1944. But was returned to the USAAF.
After the war, it was sold to Australian National Airways (ANA) and converted to DC-3 standard at Melbourne's Essendon Airport. This conversion included replacing the P&W Twin Wasp engines with Wright Cyclone engines.
After bouncing between Papua New Guinea and Australia, it was converted to Viewmaster standard by Butler Air Transport and sold to Ansett-ANA by 1958.
It was then promptly sold and re-re-engined to South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand (SPANZ). As Airlines of New Zealand, it operated as a subsidiary of Ansett-ANA, much to the chagrin of Air New Zealand and New Zealand National Airways Corporation. The aircraft was named RMA George Bolt.
SPANZ became famous for their more permissive attitude and their ability to operate in the heavily state owned airline industry in Aotearoa. To the point where the Auckland Star hilariously referred to SPANZ as capitalist and NZNAC as communist because you could smoke on SPANZ DC-3s. Furthermore, the NZNAC Skyliner DC-3s were done in order to compete with SPANZ.
After being sold to NZNAC for NZ£14,100 it went back to Australia and was briefly operated by Qantas Empire Airways and Fiji Airways* before being sold back to NZNAC in 1969.
It briefly operated for Mt. Cook Airlines and was slated for operations with South Seas Airways, but this fell through.
And so it was instead sold to Fieldair Ltd (t/as Airland) and renamed Whio. It ended its working life as an Ag-Dak in 1985, having flown 56,232 hours. It was towed to Whanganui with the intentions of being made airworthy by Wanganui Airwork. This was deemed impractical, and so she was instead taken up to Taupō for refurbishment to Viewmaster standard in 1989.
Finally, in 1990, she was moved from the Taupo Car Sales / Aeroplane Car Co yard to McDonald's, where she remains.
For a full history, click here. For further reading on SPANZ and the Viewmaster standard DC-3, see SPANZ: South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand and Their DC-3 Viewmasters by Richard Waugh and Peter Layne.
*Likely the first Fiji Airways, not the rebranded Air Pacific.

collaboration spotlight — Slime by Danny Gonzalez
youtube
In the first decade of YouTube's existence, amateur video creators did some wild, experiemental things. Some folks found their niches in odd places. And others went meta by making content about that weird stuff. This video goes above and beyond mere commentary to become a full parody production of its own.
Details:
title: Slime
performer: Danny Gonzalez
written & arranged by: Danny Gonzalez
directed & produced by: Layne Stein & Tony Wakim
release date: 18 January 2019
My favorite bits:
all the cliched markers of sudden wealth perpetuated by both the music industry and early YouTube
not really acknowledging that Drew Gooden is also just there
the growing tension in the lyrics and increasingly fast percussion leading into the first chorus
♫ "Got that family friendly content. I don't get demonitized." ♫
the random giant nutcracker in the back seat of the car
Danny's anxiety in ♫ "She was looking at my YouTube channel. Wait don't do that!" ♫
the woman's growing confusion and amusement as she scrolls through his channel
his hilariously earnest vulnerability in the final section
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
This music video is excerpted from Danny's full length "The Weirdest Children's Channel On YouTube" video.
PattyCake fans will recognize the woman from the club as Anna Ricks, who plays Aurora in their Princess Academy series.
The young girl is Layne's youngest step-daughter, Lilly. He posted a clip from the filming of that segment in his Instagram.

Voiceplay Visuals - Christmas Don't Be Late (The Chipmunk Song)
VoicePlay didn't actually release a full-length Christmas song in 2021 (just a couple of Christmas Minis instead), and so we're jumping ahead to the 3rd of December, 2022, when VoicePlay released what may in fact be my favourite Christmas song cover of theirs ever!
As a group, VoicePlay have had quite a lot of experience with performing this song over the years, as it was a regular part of their setlist when they used to perform at Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at Walt Disney World. If you wanna learn more about that, check out these posts by @jules-has-notes linked HERE and HERE (and I hope Jules doesn't mind me tagging them but seriously their blog has *so much* stuff about old VoicePlay stuff, further back than I go that's for sure!)
Anyway, the original arrangement for this song, i.e. the one VP used for live performances, was done by a guy called Chris Diaz, who is (was?) in an acapella group himself, but Geoff made quite a few alterations to the song/arrangement himself, and so both him and Chris are credited with the arrangement! Geoff was also in charge of the video, he co-directed it with Tony, and yes, he added additional music bits and original lyrics of his own, because of course he did 😄
And of course the song features the amazing DeeJay Young, but enough talking, let's get into this!
Tumblr media
First of all, love the way VoicePlay started the song with the kinda "old-timey" effect on the visuals (and the audio too!). They did something similar for the start of Sh-Boom and In The Air Tonight, and did it for a brief moment in We're Good as well.
Second of all, do you recognise the set? You should! It's the same one Geoff used for his Way Down video, just with a bit of added Christmas flair!
Tumblr media
Not the most perfect screenshot but I just had to give a shoutout for how Geoff suddenly runs into the shot. Like seriously neither words nor individual screencaps do it justice but I find it very amusing 😝
(Also, Eli is again weaing black sneakers with thick white soles)
Tumblr media
Cesar as Alvin is literally perfect casting honestly. Like nobody else could do it better.
(Also Cesar was in fact genuinely filming stuff on his phone during this bit, and that footage got included in the BTS video for this cover, and it's just as entertaining and hilarious as you'd expect)
Tumblr media
I want that shirt
Tumblr media
DeeJay is looking pretty stylish there too! (And yes Cesar also looks great in his blazer)
Alright so Layne is Dave (the human guy character), Cesar is Alvin, Deejay is Theodore, Eli is Simon, and Geoff is... Geoff? 😂😅
Tumblr media
"ALVIIINNNN!!!!!"
(*pfft*)
Tumblr media
*ding*
(Yeah this video definitely still makes me laugh 😂)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Alvin! Stop riffing so much and stick to the music!"
Unfair! DeeJay and Eli do heaps of riffing all the time! (And we love them for it, lol)
Also I don't know what the sheet music "says" in terms of the music notes, but I love that it at least appears to be a legit page of sheet music for the song, complete with VoicePlay logo at the top!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"So listen for those nine reindeer!"
Also it's not a visual thing, but given that quite a few reactors didn't seem to notice/realize it, I gotta point out that the sleigh bell/jingle bell sound here is very much done by Layne! Probably with a little bit of post-production effect, but still, very impressive!
Tumblr media
"A brand new bottle of hair gel!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"A bright green dress like ✨Tinkerbell!✨"
*PFFT*
This line is specifically a reference to the fact that they used to perform this song at Disney World, as I mentioned at the start, but this line has also been used in some of their older performances of it too I believe?
Also whenever I sing this song to myself, I literally can NEVER, sing the "bright green dress like Tinkerbell" line, because I always start laughing every time!
Tumblr media
"Dooon't be la-ate!"
(I think he really wants that dress you guys 😉😝)
Tumblr media
*sigh* He's so pretty and handsome, I love him (look, about 90% of my Voiceplay Visuals posts involve at least one moment of me pointing out how good Geoff looks! I apologise for nothing!)
(Also it took a decent bit of restraint for me to not include even more Geoff screenshots in this just because)
Tumblr media
"So put your sleigh in- (so put your sleigh in its top gear!)"
I don't think I've actually noticed this bit before but damn Cesar ain't messing around! He wants presents NOW! 😂
Tumblr media
"A tweet from Musk would make me grin!" (heavy grimacing)
I actually checked the lyrics for this song cover on Spotify (back before Spotify made lyrics available only to Premium users, rip), and this line is actually changed for the audio-only version it seems, to "a gift from mom would make me grin", which is fair, because the very faked sincerity of this line wouldn't convey as easily without the visuals.
Tumblr media
"Front row seats to Hamilton!"
VoicePlay are no stranger to including references to modern day media stuff in their Christmas Don't Be Late performances, but this is also a not-super-subtle shoutout to the fact that DeeJay was on tour as a cast member in Hamilton! (And still is performing in Hamilton I believe?) He's been playing the role of Aaron Burr I believe? Which is very very impressive, shoutout to DeeJay!
Tumblr media
"We can hardly wait!"
(Also hey is that a little Eli Eyebrow Raise I see?)
And I have to give a shoutout to the bridge section of this cover - another Geoff Castellucci original, it's so good! Fits in perfectly, as all his lyrics do! (Original song WHEN?)
Tumblr media
"I've been so wonderful!"
I love how the responses of reactors to this moment have been a mix of "aww yes you have Cesar!" and "hmmm I'm not so sure (light-hearted) but I still love you regardless" 😄😁
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Get it Cesar! Love the dancing!
Tumblr media
Only just noticed Eli has the Hamilton booklet thing shoved in the back pocket of his jeans, lol
Tumblr media
Cesar what are you doing? 😆
Tumblr media
"Great job, chipmunks! Even you, Alvin! Now let's try it with some helium!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*pfft*, what a way to end the video honestly
Geoff looks confused, Eli looks uncertain/doubtful (another Eli Eyebrow Raise!), DeeJay looks like he's either down for it or hasn't fully processed it, and Cesar looks HORRIFIED XD
(Also what would Geoff even sound like on helium when singing bass? Normal? /j 😂)
So that's Christmas Don't Be Late! VoicePlay turned a song that's really quite short, slow, and overall fairly forgettable, into an absolute bop and banger, and the video is super fun as well. Like seriously, this is one song that no one else has done or will do in the same way that VoicePlay has, and that's a big part of what I love about it! Until next time!

Grim Grinning Ghosts — VoicePlay music video
youtube
The VoicePlay guys love Halloween and all things spooky. So when they finally had the resources they needed to make the music video they'd envisioned for this song, they went all out. Welcome… to three minutes of fantastic singing, incredible practical and visual effects, and (most importantly) five friends having a whole lot of fun together.
Details:
title: Grim Grinning Ghosts
original performers: theme from The Haunted Mansion ride at Disney theme parks; sung by Thurl Ravenscroft as Uncle Theodore, Jay Meyer as Ned Nub, Chuck Schroeder as Cousin Algernon, Verne Rowe as Rollo Rumkin, and Bob Ebright as Phineas P. Pock
written by: Norman Dale "Buddy" Baker & Francis Xavier "X" Atencio
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci
release date: 11 October 2016
My favorite bits:
the smooth opening harmonies
everyone's exaggerated enunciation and head movements to make them seem more animated
spotlighting each member early on so viewers can discern who's who under all that incredible makeup
Geoff demonstrating the ♫ "eerie eyes" ♫
Layne's high-pitched chittering trill
synchronized head-tilt choreography
sticking Little Leota's sing-song ♫ "Hurry baa-aack" ♫ in the middle of the bridge
the fun shaky audio panning in the last chorus
Earl's hilarious outro, complete with tongue pointing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the guys' prosthetic pieces being created — left to right: Layne, Earl, Eli, Geoff, & Tony
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
VoicePlay originally recorded this song for their Disney tribute album "Once Upon an Ever After" (2012), and filmed a live version backstage after a concert during their 2012 fall tour.
The Singing Busts and Ghost Host prosthetics were created and applied by the team at Makeup & Creative Arts.
They also filmed the video at the MCA studio space, presumably so they didn't have to risk the torso pieces being damaged in transit, and for ease of application. Especially considering that Geoff had two different looks that needed to be put on and taken off over the course of the shoot.
The jittery stop-motion style visuals were created by filming at half speed and then speeding up the footage to match the tempo of the music.
Various YouTube commenters likened the guys' altered appearances to: Bill Nye, Colonel Sanders, Winston Churchill, Nicola Tesla, Nicolas Cage, John Cleese, Jason Flemyng, the Green Arrow, and Sheogorath from Elder Scrolls.
VoicePlay later repurposed the opening chords from this arrangement to set the mood in the prologue section of their "This Is Halloween" video in 2018.
Geoff posted a short makeup and visual effect test video on social media a couple days after the music video's premiere.

going back 2 my tags about how I don't care when people point out that James and lars sucked as people in the 90s...dude lmfao the call was always coming from inside the house w them they're hilarious. like particularly the clip of them playing man in the box just for James to make fun of Layne for being unable 2 tour cos of his heroin od but he was literally a raging alcoholic and his band mates were cokeheads during that . why should I be mad..I'm gonna point & laff.. they're brain dead...
conceptually as a person i find lars fascinating. i think he could easily be one of the most multilayered and insane characters of all time ever . unfortunately he is a real girl in a real band and he kind of sucked for most of it. well thats ok

The Core (2003)
Tumblr media
Several sci-fi disaster films feature a crew of professionals who have to blow something up to save the Earth. Among the best, you’ve got Sunshine. At ground level, you’ve got Armageddon. Far at the bottom, you’ve got The Core. This movie’s science is laughable and its plot so predictable it’ll have you looking at Roland Emmerick’s catastrophes fondly.
Everything's nice and dandy for humankind when suddenly, the world is on the brink of collapse. The Earth’s core has stopped rotating. Major Rebecca Childs (Hilary Swank), Dr. Edward Brazzelton (Delroy Lindo), and Commander Robert Iverson (Bruce Greenwood) are among the team sent to the center of the Earth to jump-start it using nuclear weapons.
Scientists and those even remotely interested in science better stay far away from this movie. Even if you’re not, you’ll notice the abundance of shortcuts and contrived tactics used to make the flimsy premise work. From the beginning, we see what kind of disasters await the planet. It’s looking grim. We learn that even if we could band together and try to do something about it, we’ve never drilled lower than about 7 miles down, nowhere near the middle of the planet. What kind of masterful ingenuity and quick-thinking will they use to come up with technology so advanced it can withstand the pressure and the heat of the planet's mantle? Oh, they just find a scientist who’s been sitting on the technology for 20 years. Even better, they’re on a first-name basis with the people overseeing the mission! This is the most blatant example of lazy writing in The Core and it comes early, warning you that you shouldn’t expect much intelligence from this disaster movie.
You're asked to swallow all sorts of improbabilities. Titanic geodes floating around thousands of kilometers beneath our feet, an X-ray machine hundreds of times more powerful than the ones we use in hospitals developed within 3 months... most unlikely of all are the characters not realizing what roles they play in this story. You can predict the fate of every single one of the characters on board of the Virgil (the ship that’s drilling through the planet). Why is there only one female member? So she can find a love interest. Why does she display badass skills when introduced? So she can fail and learn from her failure when it really counts. Which member of the crew is going to heroically sacrifice themselves? I’ll give you a hint, there’s one guy whose complexion doesn’t match everyone else's? Obviously, we'll also learn that even though we have a conflict that’s plenty big to keep our heroes busy, a bureaucrat is going to meddle with the mission. It's so cookie-cutter you'll become bored.
The only real enjoyment to have from The Core is at the expense of its ludicrous scientific explanations and improbable developments. It’s plainly inferior to every other '90s disaster movie, and most of those weren’t that good anyway. (On DVD, January 2, 2015)
