Lily saying that she just googled edgy media for her dark media edge lord character to hold and that it doesn’t represent her actual opinion is so brain dead. Like so you’re admitting that you didn’t see ANY dark media for your video about it? AND all the random examples are incest because…. Like I might believe that if she just did Flowers in the Attic and other non incest things because it’s been made into a movie more than once but she also did like three other books no one has ever heard of. Like yeah I totally googled dark media and google AI gave me a list of incest erotica
When I looked up that brother-sister incest book Forbidden she likes to reference and put on charts on Good Reads it also recommended the brother-sister incest book Hale, which she put in the Wholesome vs Dark media video.
She of course conveniently copyright struck the VOD where I pointed that out.
The VOD that will be back up in 2 weeks because no lawyer in their right mind is gonna tell her she has a valid copyright claim to her videos full of media belonging to large corporations. And her strikes are technically claiming my voice, performance, artwork and graphics as her own.
Though it is hilarious knowing the darkest thing she's ever watched is Hazbin Hotel. She really does have the mentality of a 15 year old.

Hans Schmidt
Hello, lovelies! I've been working on a digital painting of Hans Schmidt from "Violins & Violets" and "Vogeltje" on and off over the last week, and today, I finally gave him some hair, and a jacket to go with the trousers I will give him at some point, presumably! I'm having lots of fun, and I'm definitely glad now that I invested in a tablet! I'm trying to stick fairly closely to the palette I set up at the beginning, but I couldn't make his skintone without straying a bit! Hopefully it's looking fairly cohesive for all of you, though.
More soon, as I get to drawing it, around work for university!

Anyone playing the Legendary edition and romancing Liara, I recommend the Mass Effect Genesis comic that plays before starting ME2. The artwork is kinda meh, but Jennifer Hale's narration more than makes up for it. The way Shepard describes joining minds with Liara the first time (when Liara saw the vision) sounds so freaking horny its hilarious.

The Amazing Colossal Irishman -- Get Outta Town (1960) poster
Although I generally choose subjects for these essays which—in addition to providing fodder for my witty commentary—are reasonably competent in both an artistic and marketing sense, today’s poster doesn’t necessarily fit that criteria. This poster isn’t especially inspired and doesn’t seem to have that “hook” that might pique the ticket-buying interest of movie audiences. However, Get Outta Town is a sentimental favourite and the poster is worthy of examination.
As noted above, I have a soft spot for Get Outta Town (the movie, not the poster so much). Clearly a low-budget vanity project for actor Doug Wilson, the film has nice noir-ish feel to it, the location shooting adds verisimilitude, and the vernacularised title* draws attention (apparently the working title was “The Day Kelly Came Home,” which isn’t bad; the picture was re-released in 1964 as Gangster’s Revenge, which sounds like a generic translation of a Japanese yakuza movie title).
*[ Get Outta Town was the first in a planned trilogy, to be followed by Fuhgettaboutit and Whatsamattayou. Alright, that’s totally not true. As far as I know.]
Most of the behind-the-camera personnel behind Get Outta Town don’t have extensive Hollywood credits. Executive producer William B. Hale might be the same “William B. Hale” who made a 1950s documentary on the Watts Towers entitled “The Towers,” but this is unconfirmed. Co-producer/director Charles Davis is only cited by IMDB as the director of one other, later independent film (assuming this is the same Charles Davis); cinematographer Larry Raimond has a handful of credits spanning nearly 3 decades. Scripter Bob Wehling seems to have had the most work experience, directing a couple of features and doing some acting in additional to his writing chores. Co-producer and star Doug Wilson has a handful of TV appearances on his resumé, and IMDB also indicates he was a film editor, although no credits are provided.
[To be fair, technical credits on episodic Fifties television series are not well documented, so at least some of these people could have been hard-working professionals, just not on theatrical features. As an aside, Get Outta Town’s on-screen credits are in the familiar “Sixties TV sitcom” font, which subliminally reinforces the television-industry connections of the cast and crew.]
Get Outta Town carries a 1959 copyright date by “MCP Film Distributing Co.” (the production company is listed variously as “Albex Films” and “Davis-Wilson Productions”) and was released in 1960 by Sterling World Distributors (the 1964 re-release was handled by Beckman Film Corp.). A fair amount of “paper” can be found for Get Outta Town, including the one-sheet poster illustrated here, lobby cards (I think I even own one), and an insert.
The poster for Get Outta Town (which spells the title Get Outta’ Town, although the film itself doesn’t have the apostrophe) isn’t horrible, but is rather bland. The yellow background was, for some reason, a popular motif in some Fifties-Sixties cinema posters: perhaps the designers thought it was eye-catching or made the artwork “pop” more than a white background would. To me, it signifies “cheap indie film,” though, but I suppose that could be a conditioned response based on the number of posters I’ve seen like this, as opposed to a strictly artistic evaluation.
[More yellow-background posters, from a quick scroll thru www.wrongsideoftheart.com: Carnival Rock, Because of Eve, Cage of Evil, Curse of the Faceless Man, Eighteen and Anxious, Fingerprints Don’t Lie, Girl Fever, Girl on the Run, Liane Jungle Goddess, Red Lips, Right Hand of the Devil, Teenage Zombies, The Violent Years, Wild for Kicks, The Naked Road, Teenage Thunder, Operation Conspiracy, New Orleans Uncensored, Five Guns West, The Party Crashers, Chained for Life, The Incredible Petrified World, The Woman Eater, Voodoo Island, and many more. The titles alone give you an idea of the class of movies that used the garish yellow background in this era.]
The main image is, of course, of producer-star Doug Wilson. He’s big, burly, with muscular arms and a hairy chest revealed by his unbuttoned shirt. There’s a sort of John Wayne-ish vibe about this portrait, and it was probably not coincidental. I’m of two minds about this. First, the art does convey the impression of a tough, action-oriented, even working-class protagonist, perhaps a truck driver or an oil rig worker or a longshoreman or a construction boss, etc. (this is somewhat at odds with the tone of the film itself, which is more of an urban crime picture). On the other hand, Doug Wilson stars in the movie but he’s not a movie star, so a gigantic painting of him, mostly devoid of context, might not be the best sales tactic. He’s looming over a cityscape, there’s a dead body and two women, but mostly this is DOUG WILSON, TOUGH GUY. Take it or leave it.
Two women are pictured on the poster. The poster’s text (to be discussed shortly) suggests these are the protagonist’s “two girl friends,” and we can surmise that Lefty is the good girl (modest top and skirt combo, tasteful necklace) and Righty is the bad girl (spaghetti-strapped gown with a fringed hem, bare shoulders), but they are both awkwardly posed and both share the same shocked and apprehensive expression. They’re his “girl friends?” They seem to be regarding him fearfully, not affectionately. Maybe it’s awe of his massive masculinity that makes them look that way.
Thus, while the artwork and design aren’t crude or confusing, the exact nature of the film is hazy. Perhaps the text can clear this up? But if you’re relying on the printed words on a poster to educate your audience about what to expect, you’ve got one strike against you to begin with.
The Get Outta Town poster’s text is relatively on-point. “Kelly turned the town upside down the day they killed his kid brother!” Got it: revenge motive for town-inversion. “He took the law into his own hands!” His own big, meaty, tough-guy hands. How would you describe Kelly? “A two-fisted Irishman with two girl friends!” One girlfriend for each fist, it seems.
[Doug Wilson is credited as “Kelly Oleson”—I don’t remember if his heritage is explained in the film itself, but “Oleson” is a “Danish-Norwegian patronymic surname,” according to the unimpeachable source for everything, Wikipedia. Even if you spell it “Olson,” it’s still Scandinavian, not Irish. But I guess “two-fisted Irishman” sounds better than “two-fisted Scandinavian.” Unless of course you’re Scandinavian.]
The poster indicates the film has an “All-Star Hollywood Cast.” You keep using those words. I do not think they mean what you think they mean. Perhaps you do know, you’re just hoping we don’t call your bluff. “All-Star Hollywood Cast?” Doug Wilson was in an episode of “Rawhide.” And two episodes of “Science Fiction Theater!” Jeanne Baird did a lot of television in the Fifties and Marilyn O’Connor played “Rita—Saloon Gal” in an episode of “Tombstone Territory.” The rest of the cast is a mixture of people who made a few other appearances (mostly on television) and those whose sole IMDB claim to fame is Get Outta Town. So we’ll give them “Hollywood Cast,” but I’m calling shenanigans on “All-Star.”
The text on the Get Outta Town insert poster is significantly different than the one-sheet’s. The top tag-line is hilarious: “ ‘Squirrel’s’ Tongue Slipped!” No, it’s not an erotic movie shot at a furry convention, “Squirrel” is the name of a minor character in Get Outta Tongue. He let something slip, you see, “...and Kelly’s Fists Went Into Action!” [btw, “Kelly’s Fists” would have been a good alternate title for the film.] “This Irishman cleaned up gangland when police didn’t!” Also “His love for two girls solved a nasty crime!” However, it also caused considerable heart-ache.
The poster for Get Outta Town isn’t bad—technically speaking, the art and design are professional—but it’s not unique or compelling, especially given the no-star nature of the production. In a way that’s too bad, because the film itself is rather enjoyable in its way.

Today in my lunch break I decided to draw a little picture of Nannerl Mozart in my journal. This is the first time I've drawn her in quite a while - I often draw Katharina Schmidt but rarely the amazing woman who inspired me to write her story! So here she is:
Maria Anna Walpurga Ignatia Mozart
A musical prodigy as promising as her younger brother Wolfgang Amadeus, Nannerl was forbidden to continue composing as an adult, and was strongarmed into settling down and marrying. Who knows what might have happened had she been allowed to keep composing, or had she defied her father's instructions?

Settling down for a day of proofreading on "Vogeltje"! I finished the new draft partway through June, and, yes, I wanted to get the proofreading done by the end of June, but there was a lot of packing up to do that week. I've moved house again, and I'm finally back in my beloved Soton! I've missed my city so much, but I'm back after a whole entire year!
Between getting into a routine for housekeeping, cooking all my own food, and suddenly being a thirty-minute walk from my supermarket, it's been a bit tricky to make myself sit down and proofread. I've also been getting back into painting, and treated myself to a set of acrylics and some new brushes the other day. Here's my Grandma when she was tiny, painted from a photo (taken in 1936 or 1937) of her standing on her older brother's (my Great Uncle Norman's) boat on the creek by their house.
All this to say that progress on "Vogeltje" has been slow, to say the least! And, indeed, to say the most, because I'm well aware of the lack of sense inherent in writing a long blog post about not writing, instead of actually writing.
New project coming soon!

She Has No Name - Celeste
Here’s where I’m going to keep all the descriptions of Celeste Newman, that involve the colour blue, her main colour. She’s the protagonist of She Has No Name, a dark academia romance novel set on Devon’s south coast. I’ll be updating it every now and then as I write more.
Chapter One
The blue-painted walls of my Sixth Form’s hall sway around me, mezzanine railings and balustrades swimming above me, and I look down at my feet. They’re a hundred miles away, imprisoned in tiny cerulean high-tops that I think might be glued to the floor. A swathe of my red-blonde hair falls over my face and gets tangled in my glasses. I brush it away angrily, and read.
The day is a hot one, and I can feel sweat dripping down my sides under my Fair Isle sweater. It’s made from very fine cotton yarn, but that doesn’t mean much for the heat. The forecast was for rain, and we fully expected to have to sit indoors the whole party, but the skies turned blue between Exeter and Padstow, and suddenly my lovely jumper and beautiful dyke boots turned out to be entirely the wrong choice for the day. But I would probably die for the aesthetic if I had to, so… a little hot weather is nothing.
Chapter Three
“It’s OK,” I say, stepping forward and hugging her. “You try. That’s enough. Even if you don’t understand… you do care. And that’s enough.” I sneak my keys out of her hand, and pop them back in the pocket of my denim jacket as I pull away, smiling gently. “But these are mine, at least until tomorrow afternoon.” Then I hug her again.
I tuck my hair behind my ears, showing off my double-pierced lobes. I’m wearing four different earrings: a silver ring and a sapphire stud in the left, and a tiny Delft tile and an enamel cornflower in the right. “Do you decorate the decorative, though?”
I did have my door closed for a little while, after all, while I changed out of my dusty clothes (because sometimes you just have to crawl under a new bed to see if you can) and into fresh ones, cable-knit navy tights and a denim skirt with a cobalt blue sweater.
Chapter Four
I settle down with my diary and start rereading an entry from a while back, from the day I got my results and realised Freymouth Miles was an option. God, my Head of Sixth Form was a dickhead. “You’re not Deaf if you have cochlear implants. Those make you magically able to hear, somehow.” Honestly. But, God, I’m so excited. I’m so excited that my hands shake a little bit as I lift my teacup to my mouth, and I slurp it just a little too enthusiastically, and end up with a mouth too full not to splutter, and spray tea all down my jumper. Luckily I manage not to get any on my diary. I’m not entirely convinced the ink I’ve used is waterproof, but I liked the cool, lapis colour of the cartridges I saw in the stationer.
Ladies and gentlemen, my second change of the evening. My patchy denim jacket over an azure chiffon blouse. Very snazzy.
And now here’s a fun little watercolour sketch of Celeste in a typical outfit for her. This woman has no idea what hot weather looks like, but she’d die for the aesthetic.

Audio
I’ve spent the evening rearranging an old mashup (from last summer) of High on Humans by Oh Wonder with One of the Drunks by Panic! at the Disco, two exceedingly snazzy bops that go deliciously together, for the Katharinal.
This is a MIDI approximation of how a stringed reed instrument such as the Katharinal would sound, and demonstrates how it is meant to be played: in counterpoint, signature of the Baroque era.
The Katharinal is a fictional instrument I created for my book Violins and NOT VIOLAS. Hans Schmidt, a musical genius, dedicates his life to composing beautiful music and to inventing instruments, first trying to build a viola he won’t despise, then, when he realises he’ll never succeed, to inventing the most ridiculous instruments possible, because, quite honestly, if the viola can be accepted in the musical world, he might as well see what he can get away with.
Behold, the Katharinal, named after Hans’ sister Katharina (also a great composer, profoundly famous in-world and with her own novel, Violins and Violets), a cross between the clarinet, the melodica, the violin, and the lute. Where else but in the 18th century would you find a musical instrument invented from pure spite, that sounds like this?
(Yes, it has a single reed. Hans would never name a double-reed instrument after anyone he cared about, let alone Katharina, who hates oboes and all who play them.)
See below the cut for my drawing of the Katharinal, and sheet music for this arrangement.
(Yes, this is an alto clef instrument. I’m sorry. On the bright side, if you happen to be a reed instrumentalist and friend to a string instrumentalist, I’m sure it could sound rather snazzy as a duet.)

Today I hit 50,000 words on Curls of Smoke! That’s 47,473 this month, plus the 2,691 I already had in my notebook. I’m going to keep writing, and try and push my “this month” total up to 50,000 words as well. Then it all starts again on 1st November, for official NaNoWriMo. I have no free time right now! University is crushing me! I love it! (I’m not actually being sarcastic. I really do love my course. I just need more hours in the day!)
Celebratory excerpt:
“Could you save up for a binder?” said Rhiann, “Like, sell paintings or something. If you put some of your artwork online, like on a print-on-demand website, I’m sure people would buy it. I know I would.”
Storm wrinkled their nose. “You’re just saying that ‘cause I’m in hospital and you feel bad. You don’t even like me, let alone my paintings.”
“Hey, that’s not true,” Rhiann insisted, “Of course I like you. I just… I don’t really know you that well yet… but I want to. You seem kind.”
“They are,” Florian said, finally managing to look up, and to smile at Storm. “Remember the day we met, in Art class, when you got me through a panic attack? You were so calming, it didn’t even matter that it had happened in front of everyone. I didn’t mind it. You taught me not to be ashamed. Do you have any idea how much that meant? And that first night, too, on the roof. Who else but you shares their spliff with someone they just met?”
This is the first time I’ve actually written all three characters (Florian, Storm, and Rhiann) together in this draft. I’m liking their interactions so far, so here’s a nice little picture I drew of the three of them together, a couple of years ago (while I was still working on the very first draft).
Left-to-Right: Storm Addison Bethfield, Rhiann Enfys West, Florian James Santino Fleet.
