Had the craziest dream ever (not really)
So imagine you're on a field trip, right? It's like some police school training or whatever. You have to go into this outside harness wearing tower. A little elevator that gets you to the garage. But the garage is built like one of them stacked car garages you see in downtown. And it's my 9th grade civics class sitting in there, with a few other students from my school, and were having like, I don't know, ELA class. We're doing story time of reading a book (Romeo and Juliet or some Shakespeare), and then a random tournament is out the window. So our class paused to watch it, and it's the kids from my grade.
I'm sitting there, craning my neck back to look out the window, and the kids have made a circle, all wearing blue soccer shirts and kicking the ball around. In that circle. But then things get messy.
They all have some sort of grudge on each other, right? So they kick the ball so hard that their opponent's head just...blows right off. And it goes on, until they all die. And then class just proceeds, like nothing happened. Then the teacher gets all demonic or some shit, and the class has to fight her, then she disappeared. And I'm left alone again, assuming the class escaped or something.
I go up the little elevator, find myself in the same police training tower, and make my way out. It's night time, and I see all my classmates again, and we have to find the bus and bus driver. So we take these electric scooters and ride down a little nature trail until we come to a stop. I noticed a particular guy who looks vaguely familiar to Nikto, but like, teen, and we have some sort of connection I guess???
Anyway. It's in the side of a highway, and apparently we ended up on some rich white guy's private property. The man gets mad, our teacher comes back looking like the old witch from Snow White, we go back the way we came on the trail, and the bus is there.
The Nikto looking guy gets on, I get on, his friend gets on. At first I sit near the front, but the Nikto guy asks me to sit right next to him in the back.
So I do, and our knees are touching, you know, our arms touching. We sort of just go right into it and somewhat hold hands. Then I stupidly or smartly ask some questions.
"so...how old are you?"
"Was born in 2***," he gruffly replied, and I do the math.
"So you're 17? Would it still work if you turn 18 though? Like, if we had a relationship?" And then he gets all mad, maybe a bit possessive, but he just huffs and shakes his head. Then of course this friend of his goes like-
"Ooh, they're holding hands! They must be dating!" And I turn and frown at him, saying we're not, we're just friends. And then the Nikto guy gets mad and says we're more than friends, we could be something greater.
And then I woke up.
Hope you liked my weird silly dream 💀

Under My Wheels
As motorists, we must be ever vigilant in our efforts to make sure the path is clear for our continued movement. This obviously involves being on the lookout for cars, trucks, and motorcycles—you know, all the things running at highway speeds. But we must also be watching for cyclists, pedestrians, and young people on scooters.
A new form of vehicular traffic is emerging, though: the delivery robot. And there are thousands of them out there already, in urban areas and a growing number of university campuses. They are specifically designed as “last mile” alternatives, and are well-suited for the task because they’re rechargeable, reduce traffic, and don’t need a big parking space.
Tumblr media
I remember the first time I saw one. We were driving through the University of Northern Arizona campus in Flagstaff, and and I spied a tiny six-wheeled knee-high robot scooting down the sidewalk. I practically locked up the brakes…not so much to avoid hitting it, but simply to admire. But passersby on the sidewalk were completely nonplussed, and just gave it sufficient berth. They were already used to seeing them.
Naturally, there are critics. Why? Because there are always critics, arm chair “experts” who feel it is their civic duty to complain about all this change going on. Suffice it to say, this train already left the station, and while we may never see them in Amarillo or Canyon because of population size, I fully expect to see them in Texas’ largest cities any day now.
Miami-Dade County has emerged as a favored proving ground for these friendly bots, thanks to year-round warm weather, high population density, and a tech-friendly environment. Numerous companies have deployed their bots, including Tiny Mile from Toronto, whose pink heart-eyed delivery vehicles are used not for food, but for people to send small items to others nearby. For free.
While I am not sure of the longevity of this business model, Tiny Mile is optimistic, hoping to sell ad space on them. We saw one this last January in Miami, and once again, I hit the brakes. I shot a short clip of one going down the sidewalk, competent enough to dodge a metal sign pole that was inconveniently mounted in the middle of the concrete path (you go, Streets Department!).
Tumblr media
It is clear that delivery robots are designed for areas with high population density. They are only capable of short trips. But there is sheer genius involved with deploying them on major university campuses. No, it’s not just that they too are population dense. The ivory towers of academe are typically populated by folks with open minds, the perfect audience for something as revolutionary as this. And, perhaps stealing a page from Apple’s playbook for the last five decades, putting the product in the hands of young people will likely pay dividends later.

Just as with drone delivery and even DoorDash, the robots are not without problems. People may kick or otherwise damage them. They may get stuck in a rut, hole, or crack. Heck, they may get run over. You can only hope the food is still hot when it reaches its destination. I’m sure these problems will be addressed in time. And all those gig workers complaining about their side hustles disappearing will just have to find another gig.
As you might expect, delivery robots are all about efficiencies, from the actual delivery to costs involved. The upfront costs of the devices are offset in the long run by reducing the human element of delivery, even with the limitations noted for the devices. And since job displacement has been a common theme through this term, the robots bring with them other jobs, from maintenance to development. Here’s a pro tip: Don’t be left behind hammering on horse shoes when everyone else is driving cars.
If I lived in an urban area, or if the WT campus were just a bit bigger, I’d be all over this. Like we have used digital marketing to improve our lives, I am in favor of using technology to do so wherever possible.
And as I mentioned earlier, we must be ever mindful of these handy little devices rolling along sidewalks and through crosswalks. I sure wouldn’t want to trample the future before it could even deliver someone’s meal.

Just off the acacia-lined highway to the Qatari capital of Doha is a three-story, whitewashed apartment complex built to host visitors at the 2022 fifa World Cup. Until recently, the gated compound was unoccupied. Yet in the past several months, as part of a deal Qatar struck with Israel, Hamas, and Egypt to evacuate as many as fifteen hundred wounded Gazans in urgent need of medical care, it has begun to fill. The new residents are eight hundred and fifteen medical evacuees from the ongoing war, along with five hundred and forty-two of their relatives. Most are women and children.
One afternoon in February, a rambunctious swarm of thirty or so children raced around a large plot of AstroTurf. Some rode bikes and scooters. One toted a set of “PAW Patrol” golf clubs. Small children pushed larger ones in wheelchairs at worrying speeds, caroming off the green and brown beanbag chairs that dotted the plot of artificial earth. Many were missing limbs. As the boys began to squabble with the girls over who had more space to play, workers dragged what looked like a deflated rainbow into the square. A whoop went up. The afternoon’s entertainment had arrived: a bouncy slide, along with food carts offering ice cream, hot chocolate, popcorn, cotton candy, and falafel.
Among the children was Gazal Bakr, a four-year-old wearing a miniature maroon Adidas tracksuit, its left pant leg tucked up into the elastic waistband. She hopped along furiously on her right leg. Although Gazal’s name means “sweet talk” or “flirt” in Arabic, she was unflinchingly direct. “I don’t like you!” she shouted as she passed the wheelchair belonging to her eighteen-year-old neighbor, Dina Shahaiber, who’d lost her left leg below the knee. Gazal, who’d just awoken from a nap, had little interest in ice cream. Instead, she wanted to do what she did most afternoons: play soccer by kicking the ball with her right foot and hopping after it. “Stop talking!” she declared to the well-meaning volunteers clucking around her. “You’re making my head hurt!”
Gazal was wounded on November 10th, when, as her family fled Gaza City’s Al-Shifa hospital, shrapnel pierced her left calf. To stop the bleeding, a doctor, who had no access to antiseptic or anesthesia, heated the blade of a kitchen knife and cauterized the wound. Within days, the gash ran with pus and began to smell. By mid-December, when Gazal’s family arrived at Nasser Medical Center—then Gaza’s largest functioning health-care facility—gangrene had set in, necessitating amputation at the hip. On December 17th, a projectile hit the children’s ward of Nasser. Gazal and her mother watched it enter their room, decapitating Gazal’s twelve-year-old roommate and causing the ceiling to collapse. (Multiple news reports have described the event as an Israeli attack. The I.D.F. claimed the incident could have been caused by a Hamas mortar or the remnant of an Israeli flare.) Gazal and her mother managed to crawl out of the rubble. The next day, their names were added to the list of evacuees who could cross the border into Egypt and then fly to Qatar for medical treatment. Gazal’s mother was nine months pregnant; she gave birth to a baby girl while awaiting the airlift to Doha.
UNICEF estimates that a thousand children in Gaza have become amputees since the conflict began in October. “This is the biggest cohort of pediatric amputees in history,” Ghassan Abu-Sittah, a London-based plastic-and-reconstructive surgeon who specializes in pediatric trauma, told me recently. I met him in the waiting room of his plastic-surgery clinic on London’s Harley Street, and we walked to a nearby pub for a glass of water. Abu-Sittah, a fifty-four-year-old British Palestinian with an angular face and tender, deep-set eyes, has treated child survivors of war for the past thirty years in Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and elsewhere.
Abu-Sittah is the author of “The War Injured Child,” the first medical textbook on the subject, which was published last May. In October and November, he spent forty-three days in Gaza, conducting emergency surgeries with Doctors Without Borders. He shuttled between two hospitals: Al-Shifa and Al-Ahli, which is also known as the Baptist hospital. The casualty rate was so high that, during some intense periods, he didn’t leave the operating room for three days. “It felt like a scene from an American Civil War movie,” he said.
In Gaza, Abu-Sittah was performing as many as six amputations a day. “Sometimes you have no other medical option,” he explained. “The Israelis had surrounded the blood bank, so we couldn’t do transfusions. If a limb was bleeding profusely, we had to amputate.” The dearth of basic medical supplies, owing to blockades, also contributed to the number of amputations. Without the ability to irrigate a wound immediately in an operating room, infection and gangrene often set in. “Every war wound is considered dirty,” Karin Huster, a nurse who leads medical teams in Gaza for Doctors Without Borders, told me. “It means that many get a ticket to the operating room.”
To mark the gravity of these procedures, and to mourn, Abu-Sittah and other medical staff placed the severed limbs of children in small cardboard boxes. They labelled the boxes with masking tape, on which they wrote a name and body part, and buried them. At the pub, he showed me a photograph he’d taken of one such box, which read, “Salahadin, Foot.” Some wounded children were too young to know their own names, he added, telling the story of an amputee who’d been pulled from rubble as the sole survivor of an attack.
The number of child amputees carries long-term implications, Abu-Sittah told me, listing his concerns. Israeli forces destroyed Gaza’s only facility for manufacturing prosthetics and rehabilitation, the Hamad hospital, which was inaugurated in 2019 and funded by Qatar. The leading manufacturer of child prosthetics, the German company Ottobock, is working to supply the necessary components to children up to the age of sixteen, with donors in place to fund the project through its foundation. Procuring prosthetics, however, is only the first step. “Child amputees need medical care every six months as they grow,” Abu-Sittah said. Because bone grows faster than soft tissue and severed nerves often reattach painfully to skin, child amputees require ongoing surgical interventions. In his experience, each limb requires eight to twelve more surgeries. To track this cohort, Abu-Sittah is consulting with the Centre for Blast Injury Studies at Imperial College London and the Global Health Institute at the American University of Beirut; their goal is to create a cloud-based database of medical records that can follow these kids wherever they go. For the rest of their lives, these amputees will need answers regarding their medical history. Abu-Sittah knows how this works: for years, as a pediatric trauma surgeon, he’s fielded calls from his former patients.
Abu-Sittah, who’d recently travelled to Qatar to consult, recalled meeting a fourteen-year-old boy who’d lost his leg after being trapped under rubble. He’d spent a day beneath the debris holding the hand of his dead mother. “These are vulnerable people in the midst of the storm,” he said.
To fill the empty hours at the compound, volunteers and government employees from Qatar’s Ministry of Social Development and Family were creating art, music, and sports-therapy classes for children. Still, many residents spent late afternoons milling about the AstroTurf. Women shepherded children to a folding table where a face painter sketched Spider-Man masks and Palestinian flags on their cheeks. Then the women wandered over to the beanbags and pulled them into circles, where most sat staring into the distance, until a crying child arrived, demanding attention.
On a sunny afternoon, I reclined on the beanbags with Iman Soufan, a thirty-three-year-old Palestinian volunteer who was leading art therapy. To encourage the kids to connect to something positive, Soufan told me, she had asked them to draw their favorite place in Gaza. One eight-year-old girl drew her large, happy house, then, next to it, added a puddle of blood. Soufan showed me a photograph of the picture and the caption, which read, “The war is destroying Gaza. My father is martyred. My grandfather is martyred. My grandmother is martyred. My uncle is martyred. My cousin is martyred.”
As we spoke, curious children gathered around us. When a plane passed overhead, they held still, watching as it traced an arc across the sky. The response was common among children who’d experienced air strikes, a psychologist at the compound told me later. A pack of tween boys, who knew little English, poked into the conversation to pose political questions. They listed the names of world leaders and raised their eyebrows, asking me to offer a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. “Biden?” they asked. “Blinken?” I thought how unlikely it was that American boys their age would know the name of the U.S. Secretary of State, but, for these kids, such figures seemed all-powerful. Some didn’t feel like talking to an American reporter. “Masalama!” a boy named Ahmed, his face covered in shrapnel scars, yelled at me as he whizzed past on a scooter. “Goodbye!”
Smaller ones clambered into our laps, demanding in Arabic that Soufan translate their stories. They’d heard me asking other wounded children questions, and now they wanted their chance. Muhanad, who was eight, with two buckteeth poking out of his mouth, had rolled himself over in his wheelchair. He’d lost his right leg when a ceiling collapsed on him during an Israeli strike, he said, after following his dad on a trip to buy sugar. He mused aloud that he’d made a mistake by leaving the house. (His father, Muhanad said, had also been severely injured. He was stuck in Gaza, without permission to evacuate.) I asked him what his favorite thing was in Qatar. “I’m glad to be able to meet the people who helped me in person,” Muhanad said, smiling. He cupped his hands and brought them together in front of his chest, making a heart.
Dina Shahaiber, who was four-year-old Gazal’s long-suffering neighbor, sat listening nearby in her wheelchair. Clad in a matching velour tracksuit, which read “Perfect” down its sleeve, she swung her left stump over her wheelchair’s arm distractedly. “If you think that story’s sad, you have to hear mine,” she offered. Dina didn’t remember how she got injured, only that she, like Muhanad, believed that it had been her fault. “If I’d only stayed inside that day,” she told me. Before losing her leg, she’d been largely responsible for getting fresh water for her family, running up and down the stairs to refill a large tank on the roof. “I was my mom’s right hand,” she said proudly. “My uncle asked if he could trade me for his son. But now my cousin is dead, and I’ve lost my leg. I feel so useless.”
Later that afternoon, I met with Gazal’s mother, Ridana Zukhara, who is twenty-four with a childlike face, in the white-tiled living room of their pristine two-bedroom apartment. Ridana’s husband, Bilal, and her three-year-old son, Yusef, are trapped in a refugee camp in Rafah. To keep herself from constant worry, Ridana, who rarely leaves the apartment, scrubs the brand-new appliances in the modern kitchen. She is still devastated by the choice she made to evacuate with Gazal and her newborn daughter, Aileen, while her son remained in danger. “Yusef can’t understand why I took Gazal and left him behind,” she said. She tipped the dining-room chairs on top of the farm table to sweep underneath and made up the platform beds topped with fluffy white duvets.
Gazal played on the apartment’s immaculate floor with Aileen, now three months old, looking on from a car seat. Chubby and about the size of a loaf of bread, Aileen squawked good-naturedly from under a pink Hello Kitty blanket while Gazal jabbered to a wild-haired imitation Barbie doll dressed as a bride. She folded the doll’s plastic left leg behind her and marched her around the floor on her right. “This is Gazal when she gets married,” she announced. Ridana tut-tutted. She didn’t want Gazal fashioning the doll as an amputee. She reminded Gazal that soon she would have a new leg, although that seemed nearly impossible for the four-year-old to comprehend.
Sometimes, when Gazal got out of bed, she tried to use her missing left leg and fell. Such moments were hard, Ridana said, but Gazal cried less about her leg than about her father and brother. She asked her mother incessantly when they were coming to Doha. “They told us they could come when there’s a ceasefire,” Ridana said, of Qatari officials. “But when will that be?”
In Rafah, Bilal and Yusef are living in a tent near the Egyptian border. “They are freezing,” Ridana said. They have no phone signal in the camp, so, most days, Bilal walks for hours to send his wife a video of Yusef. In one that Ridana showed me, Yusef is filling his pockets with rocks, pretending they are money. In another, he lies on a muddy sleeping mat, unresponsive. “He has lost so much weight, and his face is yellow,” Ridana murmured. While we were watching, a message arrived on WhatsApp from her sister, who’d just given birth in the Rafah refugee camp. “Habibi, my sister I hope to God you guys are good. Please send me pictures of the girls. I miss them so much. Are you in touch with your husband?” Rafah is dangerous, but the family is most worried about the toll that separation from Yusef is taking on Ridana. When she brings black plastic trays of hummus and pita back from the food stalls, she leaves hers untouched. “How can I eat when my son doesn’t have food?” she asked me.
For separated families, as well as for those trapped in Gaza, the mental-health toll of the crisis continues to mount. During the first several months of the conflict, the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (G.C.M.H.P.), the leading mental-health organization in the Strip, ceased operations. Two weeks ago, in Rafah, they re-started some of their programs. “We can’t wait any longer for a ceasefire to take place to deal with mental health,” Yasser Abu-Jamei, a psychiatrist and the head of the G.C.M.H.P., told me by phone from Rafah recently. Abu-Jamei is also displaced and living in a tent in Rafah. He and a team of mental-health providers go into camps to speak to families and perform psychological first aid. They work with traumatized children, trying to help them identify somewhere nearby that’s safe. “If we can’t find an actual place, we help children imagine somewhere safe,” he said. They also work with parents who are baffled by their children’s misbehavior, and, with the help of the World Health Organization, they provide psychotropic medications to adults—though such drugs, like most others, are scarce.
In addition to offering treatment, the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme has conducted clinical studies of trauma among children. Samir Qouta, a psychologist who founded the research department of the G.C.M.H.P., in 1990, and now teaches at the Doha Institute, has researched subjects such as children’s dreams and the relationship between trauma and maternal attachment, as well as the core aspects of building resilience. “Traumatic experiences don’t necessarily wound children,” Qouta told me one afternoon at his office in Doha. “There are so many factors that mitigate trauma—creativity, storytelling, and, most of all, a child’s strong bond with her mother.”
Although many of the compound’s residents remain glued to their smartphones and to the large flat-screen TVs that Qatar has furnished in their apartments, following news reports from Gaza to ascertain the fate of their families, Ridana keeps their television set turned off for Gazal’s sake. “She has already seen so many traumatic things,” Ridana told me. “I try to limit how much she hears and sees.”
Gazal rarely speaks of her experiences in Gaza. Ridana doesn’t encourage it. Yet her daughter does show signs of specific anxieties and aversions. She stays away from anyone dressed in white because they remind her of hospital staff. She demands that Ridana sleep in her bed, and, even in sleep, she won’t let go of her mother. “I can’t even go to the bathroom,” Ridana said.
For children who’ve experienced extreme loss, such hypervigilance is common, Salsabeel Zaeid, a psychologist working with children and families at the compound, told me. Many of the child amputees in Doha suffer from “depression, anxiety, trouble concentrating, restlessness, nausea, trouble sleeping, anxiety attacks, hopelessness,” she said. “They’re really tearful and guilt-ridden,” she added. The children suffer from a form of survivor’s guilt, because, unlike friends and family members, “they’ve walked into another country and their basic needs are being met.”
Ridana had taken Gazal to the compound’s mental-health clinic to see whether Gazal might benefit from speaking with a therapist. But, at the appointment, Gazal broke down, crying the whole time and telling her mom to answer the questions. “It caused her more pain,” Ridana said. She recalled what the therapist told her about attachment: that maternal bonding was integral to Gazal’s ability to heal. Ridana said, “For now, what she needs is her mom by her side.”

On a sunny Monday morning in May, veteran arborist Eric Ong makes his rounds across the island of Singapore. Lean and tanned from years under the sun, Ong drives toward the city center. Along the way, before he’s even out of the car, Ong studies the canopies of green between the towers crowding out the sky in the city’s central business district, dominated by cool blue and gleaming grey.
Ong is a custodian of the island’s trees, and his job is to check up on them. His first destination of the day is Connaught Drive, a wide avenue flanked by dignified rain trees (Samanea saman), some topping 150 years old. “The big rain trees you see today were the pioneers of their time,” says Ong, his figure tiny next to a regal-looking rain tree. One of the most common streetside trees in Singapore, it’s easily identifiable by its large, umbrella-shaped crown, which offers a reprieve from Singapore’s unforgiving sun. Ferns, orchids, and other plants thrive on the sprawling branches and fissured trunk.
Arborists like Ong are also entrusted with the responsibility of looking after Singapore's heritage trees, ones conserved for their social, historical, cultural, or aesthetic value. These range from the Burmese banyan (Ficus kurzii) to the towering tembusu (Fagraea fragrans) and the saga tree (Adenanthera pavonina), with its bright red seeds. The mature rain trees—Ong’s favorites—are aged sentinels that witnessed Singapore’s historic milestones, including independence from Malaysia in 1965 and the first National Day Parade the following year.
With joggers running along the nearby Singapore River and the glitzy Marina Bay Sands resort looming in the distance, Ong begins with a 360-degree visual inspection. He scrutinizes the tree's crown and branches to see whether weak or overgrown limbs ought to come down before they’re hit by monsoons or splintered by heavy winds. He examines the tree for signs of die-back, fungal infection, and cavities, an indention or hole found in the dead tissue that follows an injury. (A cavity isn’t necessarily bad—trees can “compartmentalize the decay by blocking it off inside,” Ong says—but deep ones can compromise the structural integrity and make a tree unsafe for passersby.)
Much as a doctor performs a physical on a human patient, Ong records the tree’s vital signs, such as its girth and height, on an electronic tablet, where he can also access a database of the tree’s history and past inspections. To look more closely for signs of decay, he sometimes drills into the trunk or uses a type of ultrasound for trees. By striking the trunk with a mallet, arborists can track how sound waves travel through the trunk. If they meander slowly, it could mean there are cavities inside.
The examination takes about 15 minutes—but that’s just one tree. In a month, Ong needs to inspect between 500 and 1,000, and crews are especially busy just before monsoon seasons. The Northeast monsoon season lasts from December to March, and the Southwest monsoon season spans June to September. Both are marked by severe thunderstorms, gusty winds, and flash floods—and can easily topple trees.
“Monsoon seasons are nothing to worry about… provided that we do our homework well,” said Ong, 39, who has spent 13 years at the National Parks Board (NParks). To brace for impending storms, Ong is on high alert in especially “sensitive areas,” including places with heavy traffic or throngs of pedestrians. One example is the busy Orchard Road shopping district or the East Coast Parkway highway, which links the international airport to the city center and is lined with majestic trees and colorful tropical shrubs. There, a precarious tree would be a big liability.
In recent years, NParks has also been using new technologies to manage urban trees more efficiently and at a larger scale. Small drones come in handy for quick aerial inspections to examine hard-to-reach nooks and crannies, and NParks incorporated lidar technology, which uses lasers to generate 3D models of trees. Using a software called Remote Tree Measurement System (RTMS), the organization simulates stress tests to understand how trees hold up in wind speeds of up to 50 miles an hour. By knowing the trees’ likely weak points, NParks is able to target pruning efforts.
Some trees are known to be especially vulnerable in storms. The African mahogany tree (Khaya nyasica), an introduced species and one of the largest roadside trees in Singapore, has shallow roots and is heavy and dense, which makes it prone to falling down when a wind pushes. The African tulip tree (Spathodea campanulata) is similarly likely to uproot, while matchstick trees (Paraserianthes falcataria) can struggle because of their soft, brittle wood. Arborists sometimes swap these species for shorter, hardier alternatives such as the native pink mempat (Cratoxylum formosum) and trumpet tree (Tabebuia rosea), which are better equipped to withstand the tropical climate.
Risk-management interventions have decreased tree falling incidents by 85 percent, from some 3,000 cases in 2001 to about 340 cases in 2020. “Some will say we are tree huggers, but we are not,” Ong says. “We are tree doctors … We look after trees in an urban environment. If you hug every tree, there’s no way you can move forward.”
Ong wears the informal title of “tree guardian” with pride. It’s a role that is slowly gaining more recognition, and may be more important than ever.
Singapore is home to some seven million trees. NParks manages six million of them, in roads, streets, fields, and parks. The city-state has become a lot greener since the 1960s, when the founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew introduced the “Garden City” vision. By 2030, the country will be home to at least one million more leafy residents.
The work of tending to all of these trees currently falls to over 630 arborists accredited with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), a third of whom are employed by NParks.
As Singapore is home to more and more trees, it’s also seeing increased development. In the land-scarce city-state, arborists respond to the uneasy compromise between the rapid pace of urbanization and the need to preserve green spaces.
Arborists are sometimes peace brokers between people and plants, says Ong, who sometimes fields complaints about trees that shed leaves or are home to pooping birds. And a lot of the crew’s work involves protecting trees amid construction. Advance planning is key, Ong says as he strides briskly around the historic Civic District. During large road construction projects, they’ve had to make sure that eight mature rain trees could be conserved. This has involved wrangling trees with root balls measuring nearly 20 feet in diameter and weighing over 70 tons. To salvage the trees, a team of arborists dug them up, applied growth stimulants to encourage root development, and pruned them to help minimize transplant shock.
There’s a growing awareness of the curious complexities of an arborist's job. To inject new blood into the sector, fellow NParks arborist Tan Chin Peng has been training students at the Institute of Technical Education and sharing about the industry job prospects. Some students on apprenticeships even manage certain stretches of Bedok Town Park in eastern Singapore and conduct their own tree inspections. “Nowadays, the young people are very enthusiastic and interested in this industry. It’s inspiring to see that,” Tan says.
Ong believes that a good arborist must be conscientious, observant, and scientifically savvy, with a background in urban forestry and ability to wrestle with jargon-filled journal articles. It also helps to be physically fit: Most arborists get around by public transport or on foot, jokingly known as "Bus 11,” though younger ones sometimes ride kick scooters. Ong says arborists should also be flexible and open-minded, and possess “the ability to feel calm and composed in nature.”
There’s a wistful glint in his eye as he recalls gathering with several other arborists—all certified tree climbers—at the verdant grounds of the Singapore Botanic Gardens to practice their skills. These weekly meetups, which are paused for the pandemic, involved contending with fire ants, wasps, and heights. The ritual offered a sanctuary for the public servants to reflect on their work, and how people relate to landscapes. “We need trees,” Ong says, mulling quietly to himself. And the dream is that Singapore will soon have more trees—and arborists—than ever.

A Whole Castle
In Little Ways Part II (Part I Here)  (The First Short for New Readers) (The Playlist)
Words: 1,140 Warnings: Food Mention, Abandonment Issues Characters: Logan, Roman, Patton, Virgil Universe: Whole Castle Genre: Hurt/Comfort, Fluff Additional Tags: Patient Parenting, Roman Sanders is Extra
Logan exhaled hard as he got home from work. It was a long afternoon of meetings with teachers who pretended Logan’s plight was not their own. Why scholars couldn’t agree that each department had its struggles was baffling. He rubbed his face and set down his briefcase and kicked off his shoes at the rack.
“Dad, dad, dad, dad!” Virgil came rushing up to him as soon as she shut the door. “Janus just got a new game, can I go? Please? Can you watch Pat?” He pleaded hurriedly, jogging on the spot.
“Virgil, you know I don’t like you running across the highway,” Logan huffed, shaking his head.
“I’ll take my scooter! It’s just two lanes. Janus does it all the time. The sun’s up, drivers will see me! Please!” Virgil shot back, gripping Logan’s arm and shaking it lightly.
“The game doesn’t have sexual content or gratuitous violence?” Logan raised an eyebrow at him. He always had trouble saying no to Virgil whenever he was this excited.
“No, it’s a multi-player JRPG, you get to ride dragons, please!” Virgil sounded desperate. Logan would never understand Virgil’s fascination with these things.
“Fine, go ahead. Please be careful. One of us will pick you up, just call when you’re done or we’ll get you before dinner. Only one soda,” Logan held up a finger and conceded emphatically.
“Deal! Thanks, dad! Love you!” Virgil pushed past Logan excitedly and headed out the front door. Logan blinked as it slammed shut. Janus usually spent him here rather than Virgil visiting him. But they didn’t have the newest game systems and Janus’s family did, so it made sense even if Logan was slightly suspicious. He hoped traffic was forgiving. The highway between the neighborhoods had light traffic, but Logan worried about either of them crossing.
Logan stepped in and headed into the kitchen to grab a drink before checking on Patton in his room. Patton looked concerned, scribbling hard on the paper in front of him with one hand and his rabbit doll in the other.
“Is everything alright, Patton?” Logan inquired gently. Patton looked up to him and sighed, not responding in any manner. He glanced sadly at Logan before looking down and gripping at his shorts. “Can I come in?” Patton shook his head. “Then would you like to come out?” Logan suggested and stepped out of the doorway to give Patton room. Patton sat motionless for a moment before he nodded and got up. Logan went out into the living room and Patton climbed up near him. “Do you think Mrs. Bunnyface would want to watch Wall-E?” Logan hummed and picked up the remote and Patton cheered up a little, making his doll nod a few times.
Logan loaded up the movie and sat back. He wasn’t sure what was wrong with Patton, but he was uncomfortable and upset about something. He hoped Wall-E would cheer him up. Patton liked the little robots. Sometimes when he was cleaning up his building blocks, he’d pretend he was Wall-E. Patton leaned on the couch and pulled his feet up to watch just like Virgil does, snuggling his doll close. Logan breathed a small chuckle out through his nose. He realized what might be wrong.
“Does Mrs. Bunnyface miss Virgil?” Logan inquired quietly, trying not to look pointedly at Patton. Patton sighed and squeezed Mrs. Bunnyface.
“Yeah,” Patton breathed. “He’s comin’ back, righ’?” Patton looked up sadly at Logan.
“Yes, he’s just playing a game with his friend. He’ll be back,” Logan nodded and smiled to Patton.
“He don’t… hate… um, Mrs. Bunnyface?” Patton furrowed his eyebrows and stiffened.
“No, Patton. He loves both of you. Did it make Mrs. Bunnyface worry that he was so excited to leave today?” Logan looked down at Patton, who nodded sadly. “Just so she knows, Virgil being excited about spending time with someone else doesn’t mean he loves either of you less. He just got excited about a video game and he wasn’t abandoning you… or Mrs. Bunnyface,” Logan cleared his throat. Patton nodded in acknowledgment and loosened up slightly.
“You promise?” Patton looked up glassy-eyed to Logan.
“I promise,” Logan smiled reassuringly. “Virgil is a little obsessed with animé and dragons, the game had both it seems. He also just wants to spend time with his friend. He still loves you, even if he has other interests,” He added genially.
“It’s lonely,” Patton whispered, looking dourly to the floor.
“I’m here for you, Patton. Anything I that can give you is yours,” Logan offered. Patton sniffled and turned back to watch the TV.
Patton didn’t move at first. He just shot Logan glances every few minutes. Logan observed Patton just as much as he watched the movie to make sure he was okay. After a bit of time passed, Patton took a deep breath and shifted closer on the couch. If Logan hadn’t watched him do it, he might not have been aware it was such a slight move. Logan put his arm up on the back of the couch to make it obvious he was okay with Patton moving closer. Patton looked between the floor and Logan a few times before shifting more towards Logan and laying down on his lap. Logan waited a few more moments for experimentally lowered his arm. He floated it over Patton before he rested it on him, and Patton grabbed his arm to hold along with his plush.
Logan pulled the blanket off the back of the couch with a one-handed effort and tossed it over Patton’s lower half. He snuggled up under the lopsided blanket and scooted up closer on Logan’s lap, pulling Logan’s arm with him. Logan sighed happily and watched Patton tiredly watch the movie more than the film itself. It was one Roman loved, so he already knew it by heart. He texted Roman apologizing that he couldn’t start dinner tonight with a picture message of Patton laying on his lap and Roman sent a solid eight messages of key smashes. Then he ranted about how far Patton had come and how incredibly jealous he was.
Patton was completely absorbed into the movie by the time Roman made it home, so Roman did a silent dance just out of Patton’s vision. The moonwalk was particularly impressive, and being able to spin soundlessly was a skill. He then retreated to the kitchen to make a ‘victory meal’, whatever that was. Roman’s cooking was amazing, so he was sure it will be lovely. Logan sometimes heard Roman’s soft singing from the kitchen over the film, but Patton didn’t appear to notice. He looked very comfortable and engrossed in the movie. Logan sighed in relief and smiled at Patton. It was so wonderful to remember that things could get better if you tried.

Factors Why Electric Scooters Are So Popular
Tumblr media
Can you remember your own childhood kick-scooter? Many people might remember both of these or three apparatus with nostalgia -- whether you're more familiar with all the house made models cobbled-together at the garage along with the metal iterations of their noughties. Looking at hover-1 pioneer review can be really just a great means to find out in regards to different testimonials and reviews of proprietors of scooters who is able to offer firsthand reports in their adventures using a motorized scooter. Click here: https://thescooterguide.com/hover-1-pioneer-electric-scooter-review/ for more information.
Back in the past couple of years they've built a big comeback, re invented as electrical scooters for both urban travel. They are presently predominant in many towns throughout the world, especially in people where regulations has been instantaneous to govern their usage and citizens quick to embrace them.
There is presently a wealth of e-scooters on the market available to have -- however a lot of the noise has been created around leasing them. Since the launching of dockless leasing scooters in California from Bird at 2017, the globe has seemingly gone insane for them and it's really simple to observe why they have gotten so popular.
Great for Quick journeys
60% of all city travels are less than 5 kilometers, using 70% of those quick space excursions being created by car. E-scooters are best for quick journeys and also complement other types of transport, so making them the right'1st and very final mile' vehicle for getting from door .
If you aren't fortunate enough to call home right out of your bus stop, subway, or train channel, then you will usually have only a small means to traveling. When it is really a lengthy distance off, then a trip on foot can seem far out of interesting. And how about whenever you have an important assembly or you are running ? You might decide to hail a ride instead, but that will quickly find costly and demand a bothersome wait.
Being readily available and with a reasonable choice has made the e-scooter a favorite transport option amid commuters. You may now say goodbye to looking for parking areas, awaiting for Ubers to arrive throughout a surge, or even being stranded as you missed the last bus.
Convenient and hassle-free
Even an E Scooter may perhaps not be faster than the usual car in the open highway, but urban roads are hardly ever apparent. Scooters allow it to be possible to conquer visitors by readily weaving about people along with other cars, and peak hour standstills could develop into a thing of the previous.
Portability is just another characteristic that's generating personal e-scooters incredibly popular, specially with commuters. Is your workplace therefore much off you still have to catch the subway or bus? These practical devices can easily be folded and are light enough to take along with you wherever your soul desires -- like E bikes, which texture like weight lifting and therefore are harder to store. A exclusive E Scooter might be saved compactly from the corner of one's own office, underneath your desk or in your home.
Eco-friendly
Because the weather shift crisis gets increasingly more pressing, more and increasing numbers of individuals are looking for methods to cut back their carbon footprint.
Ever felt responsible in a vacant car or bus? Most automobiles can take as many as five people or more, but only regularly transfer one or two. Even worse,140,000 Uber and Lyft vehicles and trucks are circulating on any particular day at Manhattan, also around 40 percent of them are driving about unoccupied whilst trying to pick their next buyer, making detrimental emissions from the approach. Isn't this overserving, one would ask?
Cars are only getting heavier, with the most popular becoming over 1,000 pound -- nearly 100 times that the burden of an E Scooter. This means that much more energy can be utilised to make them and fuel must move . Meanwhile, riding a power scooter just makes up about 12 % of these emissions of the ordinary vehicle.
A Excellent investment
Some e-scooters are extremely inexpensive -- infact now you can purchase them from your local grocery store. However, as the old adage goes,'you get exactly what you cover' -- cheap scooters are both unreliable and so therefore are equipped with inadequate high quality batteries which are not constructed to last. Buying a cheap electric scooter is all but guaranteed to secure you back to your own previous commute within months, with all the scooter collecting dust in a cabinet. It is good for you to hover 1 pioneer electric scooter reviews to know the exact specifics of the device.
Cool and nostalgic
Can rank in an E Scooter ride stage look cool? Whilst maybe perhaps not everybody will concur, e-scooters appear to have become popular because they are a clever, trendy and enjoyable way of proceeding round. We are still at the early days of evolution, therefore the many trendy designs will be likely still to come, but so far you'll find loads of varied and unique layouts and designs available on the market -- so you're sure to come across a mode that fits your individuality. Those will stick around? Only time will tell.
Conclusion
It truly is simple to observe why electric scooters have been carrying across the streets of the whole world's major cities. Maybe not merely are you currently exciting methods of getting about, but however, they're great for small travels. Their light weight, foldable frames create sure they are portable than bikes or EBikes along with the ideal match to people transport.

41 for speeding bullet please!
(warnings for alcohol and just terrible, terrible passenger seat etiquette)
41.) “I’m not drunk enough for this.”
Sniper had long since buried his face in his hands, trying his best to pretend that he wasn’t associated with the other hooligans accosting the bartender despite the fact that his uniform matched theirs and he’d clearly visibly entered the establishment with the rest of them.
“I’m not drunk enough for this,” Sniper murmured to nobody in particular.
Engie, to his credit, being the other designated driver for the night, gave him a consolatory pat on the shoulder before ordering himself some kind of low-proof craft beer that was advertised, and an ice water. “We’ll be here a good few hours I reckon, imagine there’s time for you to get one drink at least,” he shrugged.
“If I get one drink, I’ll just get tempted,” Sniper replied.
“Fair point,” Engie conceded, and moved off to keep an eye on the attack team, who’d all taken to trying to get in on a pool game happening towards the back of the bar.
Overall, the night was a blur of various headaches for Sniper, and he was almost relieved to see it over, except that when they went to make a head count ten minutes before they would be headed out back to base, they realized a few of their number had gone missing and Sniper was sent to track them down. Pyro he found lighting a trash can on fire just around the corner, and Spy was smoking outside of a different, immediately classier-looking bar that seemed to serve mostly wine as opposed to the wild drink specials of the one they’d decided to go to. Both were hauled back to the place they’d parked, where Sniper found the tail end of an argument being broken up between the team.
Engie looked considerably frazzled, and Scout was pouting, and Soldier was holding his jaw, which even then looked like it was bruising. Engie turned to him as he approached. “Well, Stretch, two things,” he said. “First, it turns out it was a good idea to bring the truck and the bread van. Our good Demo’s down for the count, and will probably need to be lyin’ down in the back seat. But I think we’ll need to switch on who’s drivin’ what. You know how to drive stick shift?”
Sniper felt his already thoroughly soured mood beginning to ferment. “Explain.”
Engie rubbed the back of his neck. “Now I know you took the van on the way here, and it’s what you’re more used to in terms of maneuverability an’ all, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to have any of these lot in the bed of the truck like before, and… we’re gonna need both vehicles occupied anyways. Since some of our teammates,” he said pointedly, shooting a look at Scout and Soldier, “have gone and gotten in a fight again and I’m not convinced they won’t start up again if they’re stuck in a space together.”
Sniper dragged a hand over his face. “So I’m drivin’ the truck?” he asked.
Engie rubbed the back of his neck. “Well. Also you’re gonna need someone in the passenger seat,” he added carefully.
“Truckie, why.”
“Like I said, we can’t have a fistfight in the back of the van. You can take your pick on who you want with you, Scooter or Solly, but, I’m gonna need to ask you to take at least one.”
It wasn’t a terribly tough decision. “I suppose I’ll bring Scout, then,” he said begrudgingly. Soldier was banned from taking shotgun (in every sense of the word) for a good reason.
Engie nodded, and tossed him the keys to the truck. “Alright, well, besides that I’m ready when you are,” he said, and started shooing their group along, trying his best to heft Demo to his feet.
“I’m not drunk enough for this,” Sniper called again, but within a few moments he was left standing in the parking lot alone with Scout anyways.
For a moment, neither of them spoke, just watching the team go through the ordeal that was trying to get half a dozen highly intoxicated murderers in the back of a van.
“Sup?” Scout finally asked Sniper, grin lopsided and self-satisfied.
“Let’s just go,” Sniper sighed, leading the way towards the truck. “The sooner we get back to base, the sooner I can be done with this whole mess.”
“What, you got other plans?” Scout asked, bumping shoulders with him amicably. Scout tended to get more physical with other people when drunk, he’d found, either in the way of slinging his arm around a teammate cheerfully or clocking someone in the jaw. For now, it seemed he was drifting towards the former.
“Yeah. Headache medicine and waking up early to get myself breakfast so I don’t have to deal with you lot and your hangovers,” Sniper replied, needing to lightly push Scout towards his side of the truck to get him to stop following him like a duckling.
“Sounds like a real party,” Scout said, clambering gracelessly into the passenger seat, needing to take a few valiant attempts before finally managing to get his seatbelt done. “Can I come?”
“I believe I said something about not dealing with you lot and your hangovers,” Sniper emphasized, turning the key and fighting the engine a bit to try and get the battered old truck started.
It wasn’t until the engine finally turned over and the truck rattled to life that Sniper processed the uncharacteristic silence from his passenger. When he looked over, Scout was moping, slouched, staring out the passenger window, wearing the most kicked-puppy expression Sniper had ever seen.
“You can just keep pouting,” he said nonetheless, shaking off the immediate guilt that such an expression stabbed into him and instead turning his gaze to the rear-view mirror as he sent the truck into motion, starting to exit the parking lot. “Really. This is as pleasant as I’m gonna get for the rest of the evening.”
“What’d I even do?” Scout asked, the hurt shining through his voice and still hitting him despite Sniper’s dogged avoiding of eye contact. “What’s your problem?”
He clenched the steering wheel hard in his left hand as he shifted through gears with the right, released. “I don’t happen to enjoy going out and… “being social”, or whatever it is that you lot seem convinced is so great,” he replied. “It stresses me out. And usually I get to at least get myself smashed to try an’ take the edge off it, but I’m the other driver for the night, so I’m not allowed to have anything. Frankly, I’m tired of talking to, to people. So if you wouldn’t mind, I’d appreciate some peace an’ quiet.”
To Sniper’s immense surprise, the little lecture and request of his actually worked. Ten, fifteen, twenty minutes into the drive and Scout was still being quiet and relatively still in the passenger seat. They were making fairly good time, and it seemed the remaining half hour’s drive back to base would go without further incident.
“You’re really grumpy, y’know,” Scout said suddenly, and the peace was ruined.
Admittedly, the twenty minutes of quiet had done some good for Sniper’s nerves and temper. “I’m aware,” he said levelly.
“You should lighten up, have some fun once an’ awhile,” Scout insisted.
“I do have fun,” Sniper protested, a bit more quietly now. “Just not when I’m driving.”
Quiet for a second. “Like, when you’re actually driving, or when you’re supposed to be driving like, later?” Scout asked.
“The second one. Don’t know exactly how much fun can be had when I’m behind the wheel without getting in a wreck,” Sniper replied.
Quiet for another second. “Plenty,” Scout said.
Sniper furrowed his eyebrows. “What?”
“You can have plenty of fun,” Scout said.
His eyebrows remained furrowed. “I… don’t think I follow,” he murmured.
Scout was suddenly leaning bodily over the gearshift and slinging an arm around Sniper, startling the hell out of him and making him concentrate very hard to keep from swerving off the highway. “Careful,” Scout chirped unhelpfully, and Sniper could see his grin in his periphery.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Sniper practically growled.
“Havin’ fun,” Scout said, undissuaded. Sniper wasn’t aware when exactly Scout got his seatbelt off, but it was pretty clear that it was gone given how close Scout was to him now. “Cool it, maybe.”
“Hard to cool it when I’m goin’ well over a hundred kilometers per hour in a stick shift and there’s someone leanin’ over the gear change.”
“Dude, this road’s got two lanes and it’s the middle of the night and there’s nobody anywhere the hell near us.” The hand Scout had slung around him moved to start mussing his hair out of order. “Relax. It’s fine!”
The panic simmered down a little bit, but only slightly. “There’s still road signs. And this isn’t even my truck.”
“Hey, hey hey hey,” Scout said in a voice that might’ve been soothing if not for the fact that he leaned even further over the gearshift to use it, chin leaning on Sniper’s shoulder. “It’s cool. It’s fine.”
“Can I ask why you think this is a good idea?” Sniper asked, tightening his grip on the wheel as Scout shifted again.
He shrugged, moving Sniper’s shoulders in the process, car swerving only slightly. “You said tonight sucked, right? And was stupid an’ boring? Might as well make it interesting, yeah?” He leaned in further, having to use his right hand to steady himself, putting it on the seat between the gearshift and Sniper’s leg. He felt the end of Scout’s nose brushing against his pulse point. It made his heart thud more than the swerving did. “This is interesting.”
To be fair, it was.
“Wouldn’t‘ve pegged you as a cuddly drunk,” Sniper said, a weak attempt at humor. “Thought you were more the, the hittin’ type.”
“I am hittin’,” Scout pointed out, right hand starting to idly pick at the outer seam of Sniper’s jeans. “Just, on you.”
Sniper had to clear his throat, swallow hard to buy time to formulate a response to that. Scout’s hand dropped from his hair to brush over the front of his throat, catching on his adam’s apple. “I feel like you’re,” he tried, and had to swallow again to make his voice steady, except Scout did that thing with his hand again and it threw him right back off balance. “I feel like you’re gonna, either not remember this on account’a being so, so hammered, or you’ll remember but be…” Scout’s hand migrated to rest just above his knee and Sniper jumped bodily, making Scout chuckle. “But, but be… embarrassed about this, and… not wanna talk to me ever again.”
“Maybe,” Scout admitted. “Or maybe it’ll be nice.”
Sniper felt a shiver catch in his shoulders. He could practically feel Scout’s grin, bared teeth millimeters from the skin of his neck, from his pulse point. “Nice?” he repeated weakly, accent twisting the word in a way that made him cringe internally.
“Yeah. Nice,” Scout insisted, and finally leaned up far enough to lie a kiss at the hinge of Sniper’s jaw, slowly, giving Sniper every opportunity to push him away, as if he hadn’t had enough already.
His breath was shaking. His hands, too. There was admittedly a spike of adrenaline running through him, only partly due to the danger of their situation, and it gave his limbs a distinct tremble. Hopefully Scout was too drunk to notice.
Hopefully Scout was sober enough to remember this, though, as well. Sniper, for the first time all night, was glad that he himself was.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Just as promised this is the beginning of the three-part post about answering @quilloftheclouds questions for my Wip Renegade. To kick things off I’m going to start with Modes of Transportation, I thought about adding pictures but that’s time-consuming and would make this post longer than it already is. So if you guys want to see some pictures of the Modes of Transportation in Renegade let me know, I post them!
Tumblr media
Modes of Transportation
The world of Renegade is a mix between Tron: Legacy and Blade Runner 2049, a blend of both cyberpunk and post-apocalypse dystopia. For a world set two millennia past ours (2200) transportation isn’t what most people from our generation would think it to be: there aren’t flying cars, skyscrapers don’t serve as spaceports, and people don’t regularly take trips to the moon or live on Mars. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t cool futuristic modes of transportation, most that travel on something known as The Grid (a network of synchronized power that runs below every interstate, highway, street, and connects at the center of each City-State like hubs to give every citizen of the Republic power). Without The Grid life wouldn’t be able to function, the world would find itself in cold darkness or in other locations scalding heat of the sun without means of protection.
The Grid runs like ley-lines, connecting everything in the Republic to make it work like one giant machine, these lines can best be seen at night and truly showcase how vast the network is. It’s like a collection of different colored lights running along every surface in the world, some following vehicles. The Grid distributes power to transportation, homes, factories, and other buildings in the Republic.
HyperExpress
This is the bullet train of the future that can travel up to 2,000 mph, it utilizes a vacuum tube in order to reduce air friction and increase its speed. Not only is HyperExpress an ultra-fast bullet train it also serves as a kind of subway for all Caste citizens, not only the higher/wealthy ones. The HyperExpress system runs much like the railroad did when it first started laying track in 1830′s America, it’s the veins and nervous system of the Republic when it comes to transportation, stretching from one City-State to another across all connecting contents. Both cheap and highly efficient.
Air-X
Flying cars aren’t an option for civilians, scientists in the Republic tried to make it happen but after many try fail cycles it was deemed safer to not put the public in such contraptions. So only Air-X remains, the only commercial flying vehicle in the Republic skies. These are unmanned, piloted by A.I or small Androids, freight containers with a small cab build into the front. Using Air-X frees highways, interstates, and the oceans from unnecessary cargo shipment by vehicle or ship and instead acts much like a miniature plane of sorts. Small shipments use hover technology in their motors while larger shipments passing overseas use twin-jets or quad jets depending on the load.
ePath
Much like HyperExpress there is a network of tube-like structures following smaller highways in City-States civilians in both the middle castes and high castes can use who: ride electronic bicycles, electronic scooters, or even walk. The system is at least 17ft above the road, keeping pedestrians a safe distance from motorized traffic, is climate-controlled all year round, and also offers conjunction points were either 1.) City-State district limits begin and end or 2.) A transportation module such as HyperExpress is available. This allows civilians to hop off ePath and use another mode of transportation or walk directly about the City-State as they please.
ThunderHaven
Human beings have been entranced with the idea of flying for decades and pushing the limits of that idea, ThunderHaven provides that extra push into the unknown. Following in the steps of countless airplanes and military jets that have both teased and pushed past the sound barrier this is the super-fast plane that not only pushes past and surpasses the sound barrier, it full on blows it away entirely. ThunderHaven travels 8 times the speed of sound and is also capable of breaking out of Earth’s orbit and touching the stars if it pleased. Its design is sleek, made of the finest materials to keep the body both lightweight and strong, and also windowless. Fear not, inside passengers have a choice between a real-time visual of outside the plane or movies. ThunderHaven has three travel classes for each caste: low, medium, and high.
Electric Vehicles
Just because cars don’t fly in 2200 that doesn’t mean they don’t hold their usual allure if anything cars in the Republic are far more diverse and better suited for Earth (as well as people). Pulling power straight from The Grid once a vehicle is in motion, tends to stay in motion running on pure liquid energy without producing climate-damaging greenhouse gases and nitrogen oxide. They can travel for miles and never need to stop to charge while within City-State limits (near a central hub) because The Grid is most powerful there, however, once beyond City-State limits and in outer rim districts/Outlands The Grid is less powerful and vehicles need to recharge after 600 miles. Most vehicles are outfitted with solar panel cells built into their framework, so they remain lightweight, efficient, and ready to charge at a moment's notice if you’re in the outer rim districts/Outlands. Any caste of citizen can own an electric vehicle, what varies from caste to caste is the classification of vehicle.
Speedsters: These are unhinged, drag-racing, high-performance “cars” with a design that primarily revolves around speed and elegance, most high caste citizens own Speedsters due to their designs and the materials that go into creating them. It’s costly. Speedsters usually never adventure past inner City-State districts because many are low clearance and wouldn’t survive the rough terrain of outer rim districts/outlands. Much of a Speedsters appeal originates from the sleek design they take on: wheels built tightly into the frame not bulky in any way, smooth aerodynamic design, and many resemble “classic muscle cars” from the past giving drivers a nostalgic feeling. While they are pretty to look at and comfortable to sit in people are also drawn to what lies underneath, a powerful engine that pushes past all known boundaries of horsepower.  Speedsters can be defined in two simple terms: powerful and fast.
Cycles: These are vehicles that are not allowed on ePath and resemble sport motorcycles in design. Cycles are extremely slender, hold up to usually only one person (driver), and have tire technology called tilt-tread to allow the cycle to perform tighter turns without risking the driver. The front wheel is locked forward so steering is done by tilting Cycles, not turning the front wheel (why tilt-tread is so crucial). However, when attempting certain maneuvers a pair of small fins spring out behind the driver to aid both balance and braking.  Speed can be increased by twisting the twist throttle back towards the driver (located on the right-hand side handlebar). Most Cycles also come with small twin jets seated by the back wheel, this allows faster speeds to be reached efficiently. Unlike Speedsters, Cycles can adventure beyond inner City-State districts and endure some of the rough terrains of outer rim districts/outlands pose. All kinds of citizens from Castes ride Cycles due to their affordability and ability to go beyond inner City-State limits.
Trail Blazers: Rugged, usually larger than all other forms of electric vehicles, Trail Blazers are designed to do as their name suggests: pave new ways through the wild territory without being stopped. These are the vehicles that can easily adventure into the outer rim districts/outlands without a second thought, large tires paired with reasonable ground clearance to avoid hazards the terrain may pose and not sink into softer ground due to roads becoming less frequent the further they adventure. Trail Blazers adapt to the terrain around them by extending spikes from its tires for better traction and adjusting its suspension for either better ground clearance or shock absorption. Only high caste military personnel drive these vehicles.
Roadsters: The last classification of Electric Vehicles, these are sporty vehicles that sit between the Speedster and Trail Blazer category. Their primary design isn’t based on speed or being able to survive the unforgiving landscapes of outer rim districts/Outlands, instead, it’s comfort mixed with style. Built with enough ground clearance to adventure into outer rim districts/Outlands while maintaining a sporty design these vehicles are made for the middle caste families. Roadsters are often referred to as “the family vehicle”, outfitted with a third-row seat (unlike most Speedsters and Cycles) that is roomy and comfortable it’s the ideal vehicle for traveling in groups.
And there you have it folks, the modes of transportation in the world of Renegade! I had so much fun basically spilling all my thoughts about this fictional world I’ve created and fallen in love with. If you have any questions or want to know more just send an ask or anything! Part two of worldbuilding questions for the world of Renegade is the Social Structure.

I saw this post on reddit and had to seek it out to make a response to it, I hope that’s ok.
One commenter pointed out we know there is gasoline in the cars universe. (Note: oil was produced by geologically concentrated Algae many millions of years before dinosaurs existed--there would be plenty of time for the dinosaurs to invent gas stations. Coal, similarly, was formed by Earth’s first forests.)
But I want to focus not on the biology, but the atmosphere, of the “Cars” planet.
The atmosphere of the "Cars" planet is most likely by this point composed primarily of Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide, Water Vapor, and traces of Carbon Monoxide, Argon, and various pollutants. We must also assume that Oxygen still exists at a partial pressure of perhaps 10% of an atmosphere or more, in order for combustion to still be a viable form of metabolism for the local fauna. However, since plants can not take in CO2 and produce Oxygen fast enough to displace the combustion on the planet, the evolution of internal combustion engines on this planet has sealed its fate. The "Cars" planet will slowly choke itself until combustion is impossible, internal combustion cars die out, and all that will survive will be EVs. It will be the next great mass extinction event on the "Cars" planet.
We also must assume that since the "Cars" planet has an atmosphere which is dominated by greenhouse gasses, that it must orbit considerably farther out from its star than the habitable zone would suggest. If its star is a copy of the Sun, it may need to orbit beyond perhaps 1.5 au. Early in its history, it must have been an ice planet.
Might geological processes have concentrated huge amounts of algae in the thinner parts of the sub-surface ocean, into stores of oil that are even greater than Earth's? Might organisms (technically classified as a "scooter") have found ways of accessing that oil as an energy source, kick-starting the CO2 buildup in the oceans, until some runaway (highway) process thawed out the ice and released that CO2 into the atmosphere?
The age of complex internal-combustion life on the "Cars" planet may be a relatively short epoch, the equivalent of a cambrian explosion (just one happening to a planet that happens to have developed high intelligence (or "self-driving") very soon), but one without hundreds of million years of time remaining.
Will the "Cars" planet will narrowly avoid becoming a Vehicle Venus? Might some ancient clade of more typical life survive in the smoggy, global desert to come? Will the "Cars" planet ever recover? Or will all life go extinct as the oceans inevitably boil and surface conditions are enough to melt lead? Or perhaps, will the Cars from "Cars" learn to engineer their world to avert its natural cataclysm, a sort of intentional reverse climate change, somehow finding ways to use solar power to split Carbon Dioxide and Water back into Oxygen and Oil and maintain a permanent balance over geological timescales?
We know highly derived spacefaring clades exist (at least, they are rumored to), which burn rocket fuels and have wings for gliding... might the Cars from "Cars" escape to another planet, to begin the cycle anew?
So Disney’s Cars has a series now and apparently they go to a “dinosaur” exhibit and…all of the dinosaurs are cars
Tumblr media
Which just…opens up so many thoughts.
1.) the meteor wiped out talking cars
2.) if this universe is exactly like Earth it means every disaster that happened, also happened here, with talking cars.
3.) this means modern cars are linked to the dinocars and not like…Cavemen cars.

Forgotten Gospel (Sam Winchester x OC) Part Two
Sam rolled his eyes, a chuckle rumbling out of his chest. “What names are you using this time?” He asked.
“Bartholomew, and his two kids Jillian and Hector.” Dean grunted with a smile as he got into the drivers seat, pulling the door shut.
“Yeah, nice.” Sam chided with a grin and continued to shuffle through the cassette collection.
“Dude you gotta update your cassette collection.”
“What do you mean?” Dean asked, confused.
A smile flashed across Sams face as he rolled his eyes “Well, first of all their cassette tapes. And I mean look at this Motörhead, AC/DC..”
“So?” Dean replied defensively.
“So, these are the hits of mullet-rock Dean” the youngest Winchester replied.
Dean smiled and shook his head “House rules Sammy, driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole.” He tosses a tape in the box and put in a new one, music began blaring from the speakers.
“Sammy is what you call a chubby twelve year old boy Dean, it’s Sam” Sam said crossing his arms over his chest.
“Shut up Sammy.” Diane said with a grin, Sams eyes flickered up to the mirror and gave her a playful glare, which she returned.
“Watch it.” Sam warned playfully as the impala pulled into the road.
“Watch what? You may have like three feet on me but I’ll still knock you on your ass.” She said with a wink.
Sam let out a heart felt laugh.
Dean’s eyes flickered over to Diane in the rear view mirror, and Diane caught his stare. She gave him a grin, puckering her lips at him. Dean rolled his eyes and sent her a wink.
“Well,” Sam sighed checking his phone “There are no names matching Dad or any of his aliases in the hospital or morgue so that’s good I guess.”
“I guess.” Dean sighed, pulling down the street “Hey, look at this.” he said pointing towards the bridge they almost crossed The impala pulled up to the bridge that was blocked off by police cars, cops where everywhere. Sam gave Dean a nervous glance.
“Nothin’ like being prepared.” Dean said with a smirk, pulling out the ID box from the glove compartment. He pulled out three black wallets.
“One for the Mrs.” He said chucking one behind him. Diane caught it and opened the black leather, revealing a fake FBI badge.
Sam grabbed one of the badges and eyed it, glancing up and giving Dean a doubtful look. “You can’t be serious Dean.” He muttered, furrowing his eyebrows.
“As a heart attack, let’s go.” He replied with a smirk.
The three hunters exited the car and started walking towards the policemen.
The town sherif took a step forward, “Excuse me can I help you?” He said in a stern tone, his hands resting on his hips.
Instinctually the three hunters pulled out their badges, opening them out into view. Before the cop could get a good look at them, specifically Dean’s he flipped it up and set it back in his pocket.
“My names Agent Shurley and this is my partner Agent Thomas, this is our agent in training Miss. Forester.” Dean said with a grin.
Sam glanced behind him with a shit eating grin, and Diane shot death glares to the back of Dean’s head.
Before she could say anything Dean continued. “So what’s the situation here officer?” Dean asked glancing at the empty, bloody car a few hundred feet back along the bridge.
The officer sighed and began walking towards the car, signaling the three to follow him. When they reached the car, Diane saw the thick bloody splatters that covered the interior of the car, she let out a slow whistle.
“Looks like someone was having a rough night.” She said aloud.
The sherif gave her a look but said nothing. “Yeah,” he sighed “We found a wallet in the drivers seat, along with a phone and keys.”
“The driver?” Sam asked, giving him a quizzical look.
“No where to be found, already had my men search the river, zilch.” The cop said with a defeated face.
Dean opened the car door and hunched over, peeking inside.
“Didn’t something similar happen a few months ago?” Sam asked.
The sherif nodded “Yeah two miles down the road from here.”
“Are there any connections between victims besides that their all men?” Diane asked, putting her hands in her pockets.
“None that we can think of.” he replied.
“Any leads so far?” Dean questioned, looking at the sheriff through the blood stained glass.
The sheriff was silent a moment, his hands crossing in front of him “No, not any yet.” He muttered.
“Well,” Dean said with a grunt, closing the car door “Thats the exact kind of crack police work I would expect from this department-“ He was swiftly cut off by Sam, who stomped on his foot.
Diane gave the two brothers a death glare and turned back to the sheriff
“That’ll be all thank you, we’ll be sure to get in touch with you if anythings found during the investigation.” She said with a charming grin. Walking over she grabbed the two boys by the fabric of their coats and pushed them forward.
Sam pushed ahead of the rest and Dean was not far behind him, once they where away from the officers and nearing the impala Dean took a quick step forward, smacking Sam in the back of the head. Sam jolted forward, his large hand reaching up to his scalp.
“Ouch! What was that for?” Sam exclaimed, scowling.
“For stepping on my foot.” Dean said grumpily.
Diane looked behind her and saw that the cops where staring at them. Annoyance flashed across her face as she caught up to the older Winchester and threw a kick to to back of his leg, causing him to stumble forward.
“Well don’t be mean to cops-oh shit.” Sam paused, glancing behind him at the scuffle. A loud laugh erupted from his lips as Dean straightened himself. Dean flung around to face Diane, and whew she knew an angry Winchester when she saw one.
“You guys are acting like idiots.” She said with her arms crossed “If we’re gonna find John you guys gotta have it in order. Solving this is the only way we’re gonna find him. Oh and agent in training??? Screw you for that.” She said crossing her arms.
“What can I say you look the part.” Dean replied, giving her a look.
Diane narrowed her eyes at the Winchester brothers. She raised a finger, pointing to both of them. “I will shoot you.” She jokingly warned, and continued to the car.
“Shotgun.” She muttered and sat in the passengers seat, slamming the door with a huff.
The two Winchester’s stood there a second and exchanged glances.
“She’s a lot meaner than I remember.” Sam noted with a shrug. Dean let out a laugh.
“You just gotta let her warm up to ya Sammy.” He chuckled, slamming his hand onto Sam’s broad back and walking towards the impala.
“Yeah I bet you did.” Sam muttered under his breath, but Dean didn’t hear him.
-
The three hunters found themselves at the local library, searching through records on the computer. Dean was already doing a bang up job.
“The girls said something about a central highway murder.” Diane said rubbing her eyes tiredly.
“Yeah well, nothing’s coming up.” Dead groaned.
Sam, who had been sitting impatiently, was looking at the screen in deep thought. “Wait let me look at that a second .” He said reaching out for the cursor.
“I got it.” Dean muttered slapping his hand away.
Giving Dean an annoyed look he pushed Dean’s swivel chair out of the way and moved to the front of the computer.
“Dude,” Dean said giving Sam a pissed off look, he threw a punch to Sam’s shoulder “You’re such a control freak.”
Diane yawned, setting her head against the desk.
“Angry spirits are born out of violent death right?” Sam asked, his eyes glued to the screen.
“Essentially.” Diane mumbled, forcing herself to lift her head off of the table.
“Then how about this.” Sam muttered, and typed up suicides instead of murders. To all three’s surprise, one result came up. “In 1984 Constance Welch throws herself of the Sylvania Bridge and plummets to her death, her body was found a week later floating in the river.” He read aloud.
“Okay.” Diane replied, urging him to continue. Her eyes watched his concentrated face, the way his face moved with each passing though crossing his mind. She found herself pulled out of her tired stupor.
“Oh and get this,” Sam continued, breaking her concentration on him. “A few hours later there was a 911 call telling police that she had found her two kids in the bathtub, both dead.” This peaked Diane’s interest and she scooter closer to Sam to look at the screen, she could feel his warmth radiating off of him.
“Our babies where gone and Constance just couldn’t go on any longer.” Diane read aloud “Said husband John Welch. That bridge looks awfully familiar.” She added pointing to the news picture.
“That’s the same bridge we where just at.” Dean noted.
-
They where back at the bridge, late at night. Diane hugged her denim jacket closer to her body, it was freezing.
“So this is where Constance took the swan dive.” Dean chuckled, leaning over the edge of the bridge.
“Dean.” Diane said giving him a look.
“What?” Dean mouthed back at her with a shrug.
“So now what?” Sam asked walking back towards the impala.
“Now we keep digging until we find him, it might take a while.” Dean replied, stuffing his hands into his pockets, following Sam.
Sam paused, throwing his hands up in the air “I don’t have a while Dean, I’ve told you I gotta get back by-“
“Monday,” Dean interrupted, “Yeah I forgot.” He said with a fake smile.
“So what you’re just gonna become some lawyer, marry your girl, pop out a few kids.” Dean chided, glancing over to Diane. Dean’s words stung in her chest, the thought of Sam living some normal cut life made her feel uneasy.
“Why not?” Sam retorted, his arms hanging loosely at his sides.
Oh no here comes an argument.
Dean’s eyebrows snapped together “Does Jessica know the truth about you? About all the things you’ve done?”
“No.” Sam said, his mouth twisting as he took a step towards his brother “And she’s never going to.”
“Yeah because that’s healthy,” Dean chuckled, walking ahead of his brother “Sooner or later you’re gonna have to accept it.”
Sam glared at Dean angrily and followed behind him “Accept what?”
“That you’re one of us.” Dean said not looking behind him.
“No I’m not like you, this is not the life I’m going to live!” Sam argued, walking in front of Dean and standing in front of him.
“Guys..” Diane called out, walking towards the two “Let’s not do this please.” She groaned, but it was as if she never said anything, the brothers swiftly ignored her.
“Yeah well you have a responsibility.” Dean continued, ignoring her pleas.
“To what??” Sam asked, “To dad and his unholy crusade? Dean if it weren’t for pictures I wouldn’t even know what mom looks like. Even if we do find the thing that killed her, what difference would it make? She’s gone Dean, and she’s not coming back-“ Sam was swiftly cut off by Dean grabbing him by the collar of his jacket and slamming him against the side of the bridge.
“Guys seriously stop!” Diane cut in, having had enough of watching them argue.
The two brothers looked at each other, and the anger flashed from their eyes.
“Don’t talk about her like that.” Dean muttered as released him, taking a few steps forward.
Diane stayed behind with Sam, who was catching his breath and trying to calm down.“You two just need to blow off some steam-“ She began but was cut off.
“You know Diana, I don’t get you.” Sam interrupted “This whole I’m sad and angry at you but I also forgive you thing is really not making any sense.” He snapped.
Diane was slightly taken aback, “Excuse me? When did I ever even ask for an apology.” She retorted, anger bubbling up in her throat.
“Oh you’ve done it now,” Dean chuckled “I gotta see this.”
“You didn’t, but you didn’t wanna hear one either.” Sam said giving her a confused look.
Diane looked at Sam for a minute and scoffed “Listen here college boy, while you where out there ‘studying for midterms’ Dean and I where out here getting the damn job done.” Her fists began to shake and her face went red with anger.
Damn.” Sam sighed, an empty smile lifting on his face “You’re even beginning to sound more and more like him. Looks like he finally got to you.”
“Who did?” Diane asked carefully, narrowing her eyes at him.
“Dad.” Sam uttered. Who knew one syllable could turn something so ugly.
Diane snapped, unable to hold back the anger in her chest. “You asshole!” She yelled as she swung her fist back and connected it to his face with a satisfying sound....and a crack.
Sam was shot back by the force of her hit, blood already seeping out of his nose, his head felt like it was whirling and when he finally came to he knew he went too far saying what he did, he raised a hand to his nose and wiped away some of the steady streaming blood running down his face.
Diane’s lower lip was still trembling from anger, and pain. She heard something in her hand crack and a sharp shooting pain ran up her arm. Her hateful expression didn’t change as she cupped her injured hand to her chest.
“Whew!” Dean called out with a laugh “I’ve been dying to see that since we where kids.”
“Shut up Dean!” Both Diane and Sam said at the same time. For a moment the anger in there eyes flickered and they gave each other a glance.
“Guys.” Dean suddenly said in a serious tone and they both turned to face him. On the edge of the bridge was a woman in a white dress. She gave the three a long woeful glance before flinging herself off the edge.
Diane, Sam and Dean all took off in her direction running to the edge where she had plummeted off of.
“Where did she go?” Diane asked, looking over the edge and into the black abyss of water below them. She was answered by the sound of a car engine. All three hunters slowly looked back to the flashing headlights of the impala.
“Whose driving you’re car?” Sam asked, a loon of bewilderment on his face.
Dean reached into his pocket and pulled out the keys to the impala. The impala’s tires began to squeal, as it began racing down the bridge towards them. The three took off running in the opposite direction.
“Go! Go! Go!l Sam called out, his hand grabbing the back of Diane’s jacket, practically dragging her faster than her feet could follow.
The screeching sound of the engine drew closer and there was no way to outrun it as the vehicle bolted towards them.
“Over the ledge!” Diane called out, struggling to catch up with Sam’s impossibly long strides.
Following her command the brothers jumped over the ledge of the bridge, Sam yanking her with him. Diane went airborne and she squeezed her eyes shut, ready to hit whatever surface she was to land on. She never did. After a moment she slowly opened her eyes and looked down, her feet where dangling at least fifty feet above the ground. She looked up and found Sam, his face red with strain as he held on tightly to the back of her jacket.
“Sam!” Diane called out “Pull me up!” With her good hand she grabbed onto Sam’s arm, pushing herself up onto the ledge Sam was hanging off of. The two panting hunters stopped to catch their breath before saying anything.
“Thank you,” Diane said breathlessly, holding her hand to he racing heart.
“No,” Sam paused to breath “Problem.” After a moment or two Sam looked out into the dark water.
“Dean?!” He called out, gazing through the river banks.
“WHAT?!” They heard Dean howl back.
A smile of relief washed over Sam and Diane’s face. Dean crawled out of the river on his hands and knees, covered in mud and god knows what, once he was on shore he flung to his back.
“You good?” Diane yelled down at him.
“I’m super.” Dean replied sarcastically, giving her a thumbs up.
Diane and Sam caught eyes for a moment, and both let out a relieved laugh.Sam climbed fully over the ledge and held out his arm for Diane. Diane reaches out and secured her hand in his larger one and with ease he pulled her over the ledge, catching her in his arms so she wouldn’t fall. Diane felt her face collide with Sam’s hard chest, and felt his warmth radiate against her cheek, but as quick as the contact was made she pulled away again.
An hour or so later, Dean made his way up back to the bridge, and was looking through his car to see if there was any damage done. Diane sat quietly on the trunk of the car, cradling her bad hand to her chest. Sam stood beside her, his hands in his pockets. His eyes flickered over to her and then to her hand.
“Here let me look at that.” Sam sighed, stepping in front of her.
Diane gave him a quizzical look, torn between staying pissed at him for what he said and forgiving him because he saved her life.
“Come on, please. Just let me see if it’s bad or not.” Sam pushed, holding out one of his large hands.
Diane hesitated a moment, looking from Sam’s face to his open palm, and gingerly she held out her hand. Sam’s eyes left hers and glanced down to her hand, his long, warm fingers gently cradling it in his grip. Her knuckles where deep red and purple. His tough was soft and tender, careful to not induce any more pain than what was already there. Sam softly extended all of her fingers, causing her to wince.
“Okay can you clench your fist for me?” He asked, glancing up at Diane with a look of concern.
Diane looked at her hand, slowly and painfully she brought all her fingers into a fist and then extended them again. “It hurts.” She said, as Sam took her hand back into his.
“Well you sprained your wrist that’s for damn sure, we need to get it on some ice if you’re gonna be a good shot at anything.” Sam chuckled, and released her hand. “I’ll wrap it up myself once we get back.”
Diane let herself smile a little, Sammy always was the one to patch her up after a bad hunt, guess that never changed. “I’m sorry for punching you.” She uttered, glancing at the purple mark forming on the side of his face.
“Nah, don’t be.” Sam shrugged off with a smile, leaning beside her “I’m sorry for what I said, that was outta line.”
“Thank you, Sam.” She replied quietly, looking back down at her hand.
“So the cars alright,” said a very angry, and mud covered Dean. He walked from around the car towards the two of them. “That Constance chick what a bitch!” He exclaimed out to the open air.
“Yeah well, whatever we’re digging up she doesn’t want us to find.” Diane added, her face scrunching up from the pungent smell that was radiating off of Dean.
“Yeah, so what’s you’re plan now genius?” Sam asked.
Dean threw his arms up into the air with a defeated sigh. “I don’t know, I just wanna get out of here.” he scowled.
After a moment of silence Sam’s face pulled into a grimace. “Dean you smell like a toilet.” He said, covering his nose with his sleeve.
“Great.” Dean muttered.
The car ride to the hotel was less than enjoyable, all the windows had to be rolled down, Sam came up with the idea of putting vapor rub under his nose to make the smell bearable.
“Wanna give it a try Di?” Sam asked, holding the jar back over his head.
“Does it work?” Diane asked, taking the jar and dipping her finger in.
“Morticians use it to deal with the smell sometimes.” He replied, “It works.”
Diane paused and looked at Sam “You know some really weird shit dude..” She ran her finger under her nose and the strong smell of vapor rub filled her nostrils, much more bearable than the stench of Dean.
“As soon as we get to a hotel you’re in the shower.” Diane ordered.
“Yeah whatever mom.” Dean replied
“Ew.” Sam and Diane said at the same time.
-
“Two one bed rooms please.” Dean said, slamming his credit card on the table, a trail of dust following him.
Sam furrowed his eyebrows at the back of Dean’s head, they always shared rooms, why the sudden- oh never mind. Sam glanced down at the woman in front of him. Diane and Dean. The thought made his nose scrunch up and he felt a pang in his chest. They didn’t show any intentions of letting him know either. Well he would cross that bridge when he got to it.
The man at the desk looked at the card and then back up to Dean. “You guys having a family reunion or something? He asked quizzically.
“What do you mean?” Dean asked, his face picking up with interest.
“An older fellow with the same last name checked into here a few weeks ago, haven’t seen him in a bit.” He answered.
The three exchanged knowing glances.
-
Dean hovered over the lock to the motel room, using tools to pick at the lock, when it finally gave in and opened a scene was laid before them. The three hunters shuffled in one by one and looked around the room. Maps, photos, research where tacked all along the walls, sigils done in black paint where painted above the doorways.
“He hasn’t been here for a couple weeks at least.” Dean said, walking around the room.
Diane knelt beside the bed, examining the thick salt line surrounding it. She ran her finger through it.
“Looks like he was scared of something getting in, cat eye shells, sigils, he left in a hurry.” Sam noted, turning to look at the walls.
Diane looked to the table side desk, her eyes widening “Isn’t that Johns journal?” She said, pointing to the brown leather book.
Both the Winchester brothers turned to look around, their eyes falling on the book.
“Yeah,” Sam said, walking over and picking it up “Dad never leaves without this thing.” His face twisted with concern as he glanced over to his older brother.
“Maybe he left it for you to find?” Diane suggested, equally as confused.
“Well either way, I’m gonna go take a shower.” Dean sighed, exhausted as he shrugged off his jacket and making his way over to the bathroom, leaving the Winchester and Diane alone.
Diane fell back onto the bed, her back giving a satisfying crack. “God I’ve been sleeping in that impala for far too damn long.” She groaned
“Clearly.” Sam retorted with a playful laugh. His expression grew somewhat serious as he began to shuffle through some drawers.
“What are you looking for?” Diane asked, propping her self up on one elbow.
“Something to wrap your hand in,” He sighed grabbing some ice from the mini fridge and wrapping it in a towel. “Here, before they get super swollen.” He took a few strides towards her and handed her the towel.
Diane eyed the towel a second before reaching out and taking it from him “Thanks Sammy. You’re being awfully nice to someone who just gave you a mean right hook.” She chuckled. She carefully set the cold towel over her red, swollen knuckles, letting out a small hiss of discomfort.
“Yeah well, it wasn’t entirely undeserved.” Sam sighed.
The weight of the bed shifted next to her as Sam settled down beside her, a large sigh escaping his lips.
“Yeah, you’re right.” Diane said with a smile. Sam turned his head to watch her features, taking in the view of her smile. He forgot how long he had missed seeing that.
“It’s nice to see you smile Diane,” He said out loud, a smile crept onto his face, exposing the sweet little indentations on either side of his cheeks.
Diane’s smile softened and she let out a soft hum, turning her face towards Sam’s. The two sat in silence for a moment.
“It’s been so long since I’ve seen you’re face Sam, I thought I forgot it.” Diane finally said, breaking the silence.
The smile never left Sam’s face “Yeah,” he sighed “Me too.”
The sound of the shower cut out abruptly, and both their eyed flickered to the doorway. “Diane I’m gonna go do a food run, you want to come with?” Dean’s voice called from the bathroom.
“Sure!” Diane called back and turned to face Sam. Looking down at the towel draped over her hand she lifted it and plopped it over the growing bruise on Sam’s face.
“Ow! Diana-“ Sam flinched, catching the towel in his hands before ice flew everywhere “What the hell?”
“You need it more than I do.” She replied, springing off of the bed with ease, she gave Sam a playful look before strolling towards the bathroom.
“You almost ready?” She called, cracking the ajar door a bit.
-
Dean and Diane stepped out of the door, closing it behind him.
“Thank’s for comin’ with,” Dean said, adjusting his now clean leather jacket. “And thanks for cleaning’ this off.”
“Yeah, well if growing up with you boys taught me anything, it would be how to clean some leather.” Diane chuckled, pulling her dark hair behind her ears.
Dean smiled, “Lets go.” Pressing his hand to the small of her back they began walking towards the impala.
After walking down the stairs Dean paused,“How long are we gonna keep this a secret?” said Dean suddenly, he checked behind him to make sure they where out of eyeshot from the hotel.
Diane followed his gaze and stopped walking. “Dean.” She huffed, her eyes flickering with mild irritation.
“What?” Dean replied with a shrug. When he received no response he let out a sigh. “Listen,” he began, taking a step towards her “I know why you wanna delay the us parade,” his arm snaked its way around her waist “I know you don’t want to make this harder on Sam or me,” he pulled her closer to him, raising his free hand to cup her cheek “But this isn’t fair to him, and I don’t feel right hiding from him like this.”
Diane watched his expression, her eyes softening softly “What would I even say Dean? ‘Oh you left so now I’m dating you’re brother’ what is he even gonna think?” She muttered softly, her hardened exterior melting in his warmth.
A small smile cracked on Dean’s lips “Hopefully nothing that gets him another crack to the jaw.” He replied with a laugh.
Diane sighed, rolling her eyes “Just until we find John okay? Then we’re out and open. I promise.” Her eyes narrowed, she raised one of her hands and planted it against his chest, feeling his heartbeat through the warm skin.
Dean went quiet for a moment, his eyes watching hers carefully, “Okay,” he replied finally “Until we find Dad.”
Diane gave Dean a warm smile, lifting herself up on her tippy toes to connect her lips to his. Dean leaned into the kiss, catching the back of her head with his hand.
“Do you know how hard it is not doing this all the time?” Dean growled in a low voice, his lips crashing back into hers again before she could reply.
Diane chuckled into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. Dean’s hands wandered down to her hips, gripping them securely and pulling her closer to him. A warm yearning grew in her stomach, and she knew Dean was feeling the same way too.
“Excuse me.” Said a voice from behind them.
Dean and Diane paused, their bodies going rigid. Fuck Fuck Fuck. Slowly, the two hunters pulled away from each others grasp, turning to face the sheriff and two other cops behind him.
The sherif took a good look at the both of them, a smug smile on his face holding a pair of cuffs in his hand.
“Looks like I was interrupting something?” He asked through browning teeth.
“Yeah,” Dean said with a smirk, his eyes flickering from the direction of the hotel room to Diane and then back to the sherif “You did.” Before the sheriff could retort Dean swung back, slamming his fist into the sheriff’s face.
“Now Diane go!” Dean yelled as the two other guys shuffled towards him.
Diane took off to the back of the motel, shoveling through her pocket for her phone. She pulled it out and put Sam on speed dial.
“What?” Sam asked tiredly.
“504 Sammy get out quick.” She said quickly, hanging up the phone and dropping it too the ground. She brought the heel of her boot the phone, smashing it to pieces.
“Well lookie here,” Said a voice from behind her. Diane swung around, fists drawn and ready to fight. Behind her stood two police men, one of them in pretty bad shape, blood running down his nose.
“We got some questions for you.” The less beaten up one said “You should come with us.”
Diane had a knife in the back of her boot, it would only take three movements, three single movements and the two would be dead. Her eyes narrowed at the two men, a dangerous gleam glowing in her eyes. After a moment of silence a sigh escaped her lips, and her hands rose. The policemen grabbed her roughly and pressed her against the wall, hard enough to crush her rib cage.  While pressing her against the wall, the beat up cop started to pat her down.
“What’s this we have here?” Said one of the men, pulling out the knife from her boot.
“Insurance dickhead.” Diane replied with a smug smile.
The police officer continued at an agonizing pace, his hands lingering near her ass, squeezing the jean covered flesh.
“Easy boys.” Diane said through gritted teeth “Don’t touch the merchandise.”
One of the men snickered, grabbing her by the back of the hair and yanking her head back. He brought his face close to hers, his lips inches from her ear
“Do you have any idea how badly you’re screwed kid?” He said in a low dark tone. The stench of coffee on his breath made her nostrils flair.
“Yeah, we’ll see about that piggy.” She snarled, spitting in his face.
The cop drew back, wiping the veil of spit that covered his face. Before she could back up the other slammed her against the wall again.
The cop chuckled “That might of been the dumbest thing you could ever do.” He stood behind her shuffling with his belt. It was a moment’s thought, but fear ran across her face.
A sense of relief washed over her as she felt the cold steel of handcuffs wrap around her wrist.
The police man swung her around to face them and swiftly connected his fist to her gut.
Diane gasped out, as another one landed in her rib cage with a crack, her body hurling over in pain.
“Come on.” He grunted, yanking her off the ground by her wrists and dragging her towards the police car.
Dean was slumped over the police car, blood seeping out the bridge of his nose. His eyes flickered over to Diane, being practically dragged towards the police cruiser.
The policeman flung Diane against the car with a loud thud, and she fell to the ground.
“Deadman.” Dean muttered under his lips, looking at the two men.
“Fake badges, fake suits, fake names,” Said the sheriff, lifting Diane up by the back of her hair. “You got anything that’s real?”
Diane gave him a sick smile, blood speckling her teeth and staining her lips “Yeah, my boobs.”
The sheriff’s eyes lit with rage, his lower lip quivering “Get in there!” He yelled, pushing her into the police car.
T
he two men grabbed Dean by his shoulders, throwing him in after her and slamming the door shut.
“You okay?” Dean muttered, his face contorted with pain.
“As I’ll ever be.” Diane grunted in response. Her lips where stained with blood. “I think I got a cracked rib,” she paused to cough, speckles if blood lining the car window “or two.”
The sheriff got in the car, slamming the door shut and starting the engine.
“Did you give them hell?” Dean whispered under his breath.
Diane gave Dean a smug smile, of course she did.
-
“I told you already my name is Amanda Nugent, Ah-man-duh Nu-gen-t.” Diane pronounced, lifting and crossing her legs over the table.
The sheriff came in, his eyes cold with anger and irritation, two veins bulging out of his forehead. In his arms he held a large storage box. Walking over to the interrogation desk he let the box fall in front of Diane with a thud.
“I suppose you and you’re boyfriend here have the same bullshit story?” He snapped, leaning over the desk.
Diane drew her face back, her face scrunching up “Dude, brush you’re fucking teeth, smells like something died in there.”
The sheriff balled up his fists at his side, the corners of his lips twitching in anger. “I’ve about had it up to here,” The sheriff said slowly, he reached his hands into the box and pulled out a leather bound journal. John’s Journal. Diane’s eyes widened a bit, breaking her composure.
(stay tuned for part three)
