Hundreds assemble as music changes chord for the first time in 7 years
Hundreds of people flocked to a German church Saturday to hear an organ change chords for the first time in nearly seven years.
The St. Burchardi church in Halberstadt is performing John Cage’s Organ/ASLSP (As Slow As Possible) on a special organ.
The experimental piece, which consists of eight pages of music meant to be played very slowly, is intended to last for an entirety of 639 years — meaning it will end in 2640 if all goes according to plan.
The organ had been playing the same chord for six years and 11 months before Saturday’s chord change.
The piece officially started playing Sept. 5, 2001 but began without any sound — until Feb. 5, 2003, when the first chord change happened.
Cage was born in 1912 and died in 1992 at 79 after a decades-long career as a composer and music theorist that drew both praise and scorn from critics and the public.
Best known for a composition called 4’33” — which is just four minutes and 33 seconds of silence — Cage wrote Organ/ASLSP in the 1980s.
Typically the piece’s chord changes draw thousands of visitors. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the church limited the size of the audience.

Boy, 11, survives horror as mum kills her 5 other children
A mum suspected of killing five of her children left her eldest son on a train before trying to kill herself, it has been reported. The 27-year-old woman, named Christiane K in German media, is suspected of killing five of her six children in Solingen.
The children are three girls aged one and a half, two and three years old, and two boys – Luca, eight, and Timo, six. Police believe that they were killed with some kind of pills, RTL reported.
Their bodies were found in the family’s flat in Solingen by police.
A sixth child, 11-year-old Marcel, rode on a train with his mother following the killings, RTL reported. She got off at Düsseldorf Central Station and threw herself onto the tracks, police have said. Marcel was left on the train to travel to Mönchengladbach to see his grandmother.”

Wonder Why People Don’t Return Their Shopping Carts?
It’s not unusual to find stray shopping in the middle of the parking lot. They are also found miles away from the store. Many will simply not return the cart to the designated spot even if it’s 6 feet away from them. Reason – not my job. Let those store attendants get it. I have always made effort to return mine for two reasons. It’s the right thing to do and gets me some additional steps… The later sounds funny but hey, I try to get those steps…
But seriously, why do people find it so hard to return their shopping cart? Those pieces of equipment ain’t cheap – they cost money and explains why major stores are adopting measures to make sure non of the carts go beyond a certain distance. Imagine how much it’d cost to replace each cart that got missing.
While some supermarkets are better than others, it’s probably not unusual to find a few stray shopping carts littering the parking lot to the dismay of shoppers who may think that a parking spot is open, only to find that it’s actually being used by a shopping cart.
It seems like a basic courtesy to others: you get a cart at the supermarket, you use it to get your groceries and bring them to your vehicle, and then you return it for others to use.
And yet, it’s not uncommon for many people to ignore the cart receptacle entirely and leave their carts next to their cars or parked haphazardly on medians. During peak hours, it can mean bedlam. Where does this disregard come from?
Some supermarkets have tried to make this relatively easy: they have cart receptacles throughout the parking lot, a cart attendant to bring the carts back to the store, and some may even rely on a cart “rental” system where you pay for the cart and are reimbursed when it’s returned. In the instances where there is no rental system, people may leave their carts stranded for some of the following reasons:
The receptacle is too far from where they’ve parked their car.
They have a child whom they do not want to leave unattended.
The weather is bad.
They have a disability that prohibitive to easy movement.
The perception that it’s someone else’s job to collect the carts.
They’re leaving the carts for someone else to easily pick up and use.

Missing hiker crashes press conference about his disappearance
Sept. 9 (UPI) — An 80-year-old British hiker who went missing during a hailstorm was reunited with his family when he arrived at the press conference to publicize his disappearance.
North Yorkshire Police said Harry Harvey, 80, was reported missing at 1:30 p.m. Sunday after becoming separated from his hiking partner in northeast England’s Yorkshire Dales.
Police, Royal Air Force personnel, and mountain rescue workers conducted a four-day search of the area to locate the elderly hiker.
The search was called off Wednesday when Harvey, having been spotted by a wildlife photographer, showed up at The Tan Hill Inn, a pub located inside the park, during a press conference planned by his family and rescuers to spread the word of his disappearance.
Harvey told the press conference he had become lost during a hailstorm and ended up camping out for three nights using equipment he had brought on the hike. He said he was in good health and free of serious injuries, but in need of a good meal.
Harvey’s son joked at the conference that his father was “grounded.”

Fifty people killed in a gold mine collapse in Congo
At least 50 people have been killed after a gold mine collapsed in east Congo. The Artisanal gold mine collapsed near Kamituga in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday afternoon, a local mining NGO said. The incident reportedly happened following heavy rains.
Mukambilwa Sidibo, the coordinator of the civil society movements of Congo in Kamituga, told Actualite: “Several young people and fathers, Artisanal miners, died today in three wells including those of Nivelle, Kubota and Tendi.
“In these three wells, the diggers were looking for gold, but with the rains which are shot, they were drowned by the waters and all died.”
Searches are continuing to try and find the bodies among the rubble, reports said.
“Unfortunately so far no body has been found,” Sidibo said.
A tweet on the incident said: “The city of Kamituga in great mourning (sic).”
It added: “Huge loss [for]families.”

Journalist who uncovered multi-million pound Zimbabwe govt scandal out of jail
After six weeks spent in state custody, much of it in an overcrowded maximum-security prison cell, Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has been granted bail on his fourth attempt at the High Court in Harare.
On his release from Chikurubi Prison, Mr Chin’ono sounded defiant as he addressed waiting journalists.
“I remain strong,” he said.
“If these guys knew the mistake they made by taking us in (the prison), because we have seen things that we only used to hear about and we were not sure about and now we know and we can write authoritatively about those things.”

Earlier, High Court Justice Tawanda Chitapi granted bail to a man who is now seen by many as the face of resistance in the beleaguered nation.
A number of stringent conditions were attached, including a ban on posting messages to Twitter.
“They have removed me from Twitter but not from Facebook so I will continue to write on Facebook and now I will also write for local media,” said Mr Chin’ono, as he spoke in the darkness outside the prison gates.
The 49-year-old has worked for a number of Western media outlets but it is his exposé outlining a multi-million pound procurement scandal in Zimbabwe‘s health ministry that is thought to have angered members of the ruling ZANU-PF party.
The health minister, Dr Obadiah Moyo, was charged by police and removed from his post but he is yet to face trial.
When Mr Chin’ono tweeted in support of an anti-corruption protest planned for 31 July, the authorities made their move, accusing the journalist of calling for the removal of a constitutionally elected government.

The organiser of that protest, Jacob Ngarivhume, who leads the small Transform Zimbabwe party, was also arrested and charged with “inciting public violence”.
Mr Ngarivhume was granted bail today on the presentation of a Zimbabwean $50,000 (£104) deposit.
After 43 days in prison, Mr Chin’ono’s supporters have become increasingly concerned about his health.
The journalist looked visibly frail on Tuesday when he attended a routine remand hearing at Harare’s magistrates’ court.
He told reporters that he was suffering from a fever and had done a test for COVID-19 the day before.
Mr Chin’ono’s lawyers say the government is trying to make an example of the 49-year old, keeping him in an overcrowded cell without masks, sanitisers or adequate food.
The lead defense lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa, was barred from representing him after the court accused her of criticising Zimbabwe’s justice system.
Despite the breezy promises of reform made by President Emmerson Mnangagwa when he was elected in a controversial poll in 2018, his administration has shown every indication of returning to the practices of his predecessor, long-time dictator Robert Mugabe.
The High Court today showed a semblance of independence in granting two men the right to bail – which is guaranteed under Zimbabwe’s constitution – but Mr Chin’ono faces a bruising battle in the weeks and months to come.

A Woman’s ‘random’ lottery numbers finally pay off after 20 years
Aug. 31 (UPI) — An Australian woman who has been using the same set of “random numbers” to play the lottery for 20 years had her patience pay off with a jackpot totaling more than $400,000.
The Meadowbrook, Queensland, woman told The Lott officials the Saturday Gold Lotto ticket she bought from the IGA Meadowbrook store bore the same set of numbers she has been using for two decades.
“I’ve been playing those particular numbers for about 20 years,” the woman said. “They’re numbers I chose a long time ago. I think they were just random numbers, I can’t even remember.”
The numbers paid off Saturday in the form of a $409,465.40 jackpot.
The woman said it’s “a little early to decide” what she will do with her winnings, but she is making some plans.
“I’ll put some aside for the future. It will definitely help my little family get ahead,” she said. “Maybe I’ll invest some in property, but I’ll definitely be sharing with the family.”

Watch: Woman swims 24 hours in Lake Michigan for diabetes charity
A long-distance swimmer spent 24 hours swimming non-stop in Lake Michigan to raise money for an Illinois diabetes charity.
Marian Cardwell, who previously swam across the English Channel in 2012, said she had originally planned to swim across Lake Michigan from Chicago to Grand Haven, Mich., but her plans were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cardwell instead spent 24 hours swimming non-stop along the Wilmette, Ill., coastline, and raised more than $10,000 for the Chicago Diabetes Project.
The swimmer said she is now planning to attempt her cross-lake swim in August 2021, with an aim of setting a world record for the longest unassisted open water swim.

Tesla Gigafactory employee targeted by Russian in ransomware attack, forgoes $1M payment
Sometimes, the events that transpire inside a company could be just as exciting and nail-biting as the most popular thrillers in fiction. In Tesla’s case, such a scenario recently played out, as a worker in Gigafactory Nevada ended up turning down a $1 million incentive, working closely with the FBI, and thwarting a planned cybersecurity attack against the electric car maker. — Tesla blog post
THE PLAN BEGINS
The remarkable story began when a Russian-speaking, non-US citizen working at Tesla’s Gigafactory Nevada was contacted by Kriuchkov. The employee, whose identity has not been revealed, has access to the electric car maker’s computer networks.
On July 16, the Russian citizen contacted the Giga Nevada employee through WhatsApp asking to meet with him in Sparks, Nevada. As noted in a report from Clearance Jobs, the fact that Kriuchkov approached a Russian-speaking, non-US citizen working at Gigafactory Nevada suggests that the team behind the cyberattack attempt has done their research well.
The Tesla employee, some colleagues, and Kriuchkov met socially from August 1-3, which included a trip to Lake Tahoe. Interestingly enough, Kriuchkov reportedly declined to be present in any photos that were taken during the trip. At one point when the group was taking a photo during a picturesque sunset, Kriuchkov reportedly remarked that he would “just remember the beauty of the sunset and did not need a photograph.” After the relatively harmless Lake Tahoe trip, the Russian citizen asked the Tesla employee to meet with him for some “business.”

In a tweet, Tesla CEO Elon Musk solved a mystery involving a 27-year-old Russian, an insider at an unnamed corporation and an alleged million-dollar payment offered to help trigger a ransomware extortion attack on the firm.
Prosecutors declined to name the target, but Musk was happy to oblige. According to the billionaire, the scheme took aim at the electric car company’s 1.9 million-square-foot factory in Sparks, Nevada, which makes batteries for Tesla vehicles and energy storage units.
“This was a serious attack,” Musk tweeted Thursday night, responding to a Tesla blog post that detailed the brazen scheme.

I was born with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, a genetic bone and muscular disorder, and I’m also a freelance writer and disability activist, which means that part of my job is being very active and visible on social media. And because I look different, people have called me everything from “disgusting” to “a blobfish” to saying that I should be banned from posting photos of myself because I’m too ugly.

Brit ex-public schoolboy, 31, flogged naked in Singapore jail for drug dealing says beating ‘so brutal I can’t sit’
A BRITISH ex-public schoolboy flogged naked in a Singapore jail for dealing drugs has revealed the beating was so severe it left him unable to sit.
Ye Ming Yuen, 31, was strapped to a large wooden A-frame bench before being brutally whipped 24 times in the ‘caning room’ at Changi Prison.

Now the shocking extent of his injuries have been revealed after he was beaten with a four ft bamboo cane soaked in water to increase its strength.
And the welts on his buttocks are so severe they are still bleeding, reports the Daily Mail.
“The first thing Ming said when he came into the prison visiting room was ‘see this’ and pulled his shorts down at the back and it just looked horrendous,” said Ravi Madasamy, who is Yuen’s human rights lawyer.
“All over his buttocks were multiple marks and deep lacerations. It was so shocking my female paralegal who was with me almost fainted.
“The wounds were so deep with blood, flesh and layers of the skin exposed. He couldn’t sit for too long so he was standing up.”
Yuen’s beating came after he was declared medically fit enough by prison medics to withstand the punishment.
After being stripped he had to listen to the screams of other prisoners being punished knowing he was up next.
Every six strokes they gave Yuen a break and then a new caner took over, the lawyer revealed.

“He told me, ‘I’m so relieved it’s over. Afterwards we were all lying down on a bench with blood oozing. They sprayed us with iodine and then a doctor came round giving us painkillers and antibiotics.'”
Mr Madasamy added: “I have clients who are very stocky and strong and they dread just six canes. This guy has quite a small frame, and – oh my God – they gave him 24 strokes? It’s horrible, cruel and barbaric.”
The former Westminster School pupil’s caning came after he had his second appeal rejected by the Singaporean courts.
The Foreign Office has condemned the brutal beating – which came despite calls for leniency from Home Secretary Priti Patel
London-born Yuen was working as a DJ when he was arrested in 2016 for possessing and selling drugs in Singapore.
He is currently serving 20 years for his crimes but in Britain his offences may have resulted in 12 months in prison at most.
According to local reports, investigations found he had begun to sell drugs to fund his lavish lifestyle and pay off gambling debts.
He pleaded guilty to trafficking 15 grams of methamphetamine, possession and consumption charges and was granted bail.

It was at this time that he was once again arrested for the offences of trafficking and possession of cannabis
Yuen pleaded guilty to four of the 12 charges on 18th July 2018 and was sentenced to a total of 20 years jail time and 24 strokes of the cane – the maximum amount allowed in Singapore.
His plight hit the headlines when then Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt brought up the case with Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Minister during an official visit in January 2019.
The prisoner’s sister Elysia Yuen, 32, previously told the Daily Mail: “Ming knows what he did was wrong and deserved to be punished.
“We know it’s a different country with different laws and you should respect those laws, but isn’t a 20-year prison sentence punishment enough?”
The British High Commission in Singapore said: “The UK strongly opposes corporal punishment in all circumstances and condemns its use in this case.”
At £41,000 a year Westminster School he gained a string of top exam results before apparently falling in with the wrong crowd.
